Welcome to your February issue...
F
ebruary of course sees us celebrating Valentine’s Day, where we can shower our loved one with tokens of our affection.
I once read that “Love” means nothing in tennis, but it's everything in life. Songwriters have already been here many times before, and yes, it is indeed a “many splendored thing” and many would agree that “Love is all you need”. Some of you might even remember glam-rockers, Sweet, suggesting “Love is like oxygen” in 1978. This month, I just want to share with you this memorable line from Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” and hope that you all have a fabulous, fun-filled February. “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
Claire x
Three months ago, I said goodbye to what I thought were good friends. We had been together for decades, sharing every work and leisure experience, the good and the bad, but frankly the relationship had become toxic and had come to an end. Yes, I’ve stopped smoking cigarettes. After more years than I care to remember (decades) I seem to have managed to have quit the habit and since stopping I have to say that – aided by an occasional vape – I haven’t really missed anything about it except for fiddling with my old Zippo lighter. My reasons for stopping were varied – health, cost and frankly the monotony of queuing up in shops to purchase them. All my non-smoking friends said that I would be amazed by how much money I would save. But guess what? My bank account looks just as sad as before, I think the cash has gone up in smoke…

Your Garden
SPONSORED BY THE SHED SHOP
F
February Gardening Tips ebruary is not usually one of the best months for weather – snow, frosts, and rain but with the occasional sunny day.
There are several seeds you can sow under cover, in a greenhouse or on a warm windowsill but, before you do, make sure that pots and seed trays are washed out and sterilised to prevent the spread of disease. Also prepare cloches by cleaning the sides with warm soapy water and rinse off. For early crops, prepare and rake level the soil, before putting the cloche in place a few weeks before sowing which will help the soil warm up. Seeds to sow in a heated greenhouse, heated propagator or warm windowsill include tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, aubergines, chillies, globe artichokes and sprouting broccoli. Onions and shallots could be started off in plugs, putting them almost on the surface of the compost. They can then be put in the greenhouse or cold frame. Summer cabbage, broad beans, sprouts, leeks onions and spinach can also be sown under cover for planting out later. Your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting.” Make sure they are in a cool dark room, as if they are in the dark they will produce long, translucent shoots. It is recommended to remove all but three of

the “chits” as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes. If your rhubarb crowns show signs of activity, now is an excellent time to force an early sweet harvest by covering with a big bucket. However, the crowns will not recover for at least two years. Other jobs for February include: • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Remove dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts –if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew. • Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • Winter prune currants, blackberries, hybrid berries, gooseberries. It really is the last call for pruning fruit trees as they will soon be making new growth. • If you know where you are planting your brassicas check the pH and if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. Happy gardening!

When do you maintain your Electrical System?
O
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
ne of the most important things that people overlook when thinking about having an electrical condition report is the routine maintenance it does for the system.
We all know how heat expands and cold contracts metal, but a lot of people don’t think about the effect this has on your electrical system over the years, especially if nothing has been done to it for a good while. Often, when I go to a system that has not been tested for ten years or more, connections can often be turned several times before they have fully tightened again, which to me, is a real concern. With loose connections being the number one cause of electrical house fire, this maintenance is crucial to keep your system maintained and your electrical circuits safe. I am often trying to explain to people that an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is more than just a tick box exercise for the insurance company; it is something that can give you real peace of mind. I guess it’s a bit like when you have been avoiding going to the doctor because you think something may be wrong, and when you get checked out and
Domestic
realise you are ok, the relief you get is similar. After completing an EICR, even in times when we have found problems in a system, the feedback has often been that it is much better than the client had imagined, and it allowed these clients to trust that their home is safe again. So, my message this month is do not live in fear; get your home tested, as it most likely isn’t as bad as you think it will be!

Matters MARCEL WILSON
We would like to point out that last month’s magazine included a reference to Naz Miller, Financial Planner, which should have been included in our Discovering March magazine. Marcel Wilson, from Marcel A. Wilson Wealth Management Ltd, is a long-standing supporter of Discovering Whittlesea for almost eight years having worked and lived in the area for approximately sixteen years. Marcel will celebrate thirty years as a Financial Adviser later this year, twenty-two of these as a Senior Partner with St. James's Place Wealth Management.
SHINING LIGHTS ARE THANKED Whittlesey Town Lights Committee has thanked local people and organisations for their help and support during 2021. A big thank you went to Whittlesey Town Council, Whittlesey Charities, McCains UK for the donation of a Christmas tree, Johnson’s Recycling, Sean Riley from Saxon Works and East Anglian Recycling, Biffa Waste, Storeys Accident Repairs for spraying new frames, Peterborough Sheet Metal for welding work, Whittlesey Engineering for making brackets for new frames, roundels etc and all the other businesses, offices and shops that support the committee in so many different ways. A spokesman added: “We are most grateful to the general public for all the generous donations made throughout the year. A brilliant effort. Many thanks again to Wayne Gale from Fenland Electrical Services and the team of volunteers for the set up and takedown again this year. We are all very proud of our town light display. Thanks to everyone once again and we look forward to your continued support.” 8

WHITTLESEY’S MUD WALLS ARE HIGHLIGHTED Whittlesey’s famous mud walls have been featured on a list drawn up by Historic England. The organisation has pulled together a range of highlights from nearly three hundred sites which have been protected through listing or scheduling in the past year. The list is aimed at celebrating the ‘diversity of the country's shared heritage’ and includes the mud walls of Whittlesey which were constructed of local clay. Despite their location in the East of England, the mud walls of Whittlesey – at 5 Delph Street; 9 to 13 Horsegate; wall between Wades Yard and 14 Horsegate; wall between Whittlesey Conservative Club and 36 Whitmore Street; Old Crown Lane – were built in line with the ‘cob’ tradition of the South West of England, in which earth is bound with straw and mixed with water to create building material. They were shaped in stages over several months. Mud walling in Whittlesey is thought to date to the 18th and 19th centuries when the Government imposed a tax on bricks and tiles. The tax was intended to help pay off debts incurred during the American War of Independence (1775 to 1783) but remained in place for decades. Many properties in Whittlesey at the time had long garden plots, where occupants used to grow goods for the town’s market. Property boundaries were important – increasingly so in the period of land enclosure in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Mud walls were an innovative and inexpensive solution. The walls were formed of high-quality clay available from land reclamation in the Fens and then topped with more durable material. Across the town, walls have some variation: in height, in material used for the plinth at the base (brick or stone) and in the ‘coping’ (thatch, curved clay tiles or wooden boards) on the top. They were still being built during the 19th century, but over the decades many have been lost, as plots were sub-divided, or they were replaced with quick-to-install modern fencing. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Following my article last month, I know many of you have been concerned over the future of Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all those who have given their support over what has been a difficult period. All those who were identified as being in need over Christmas were serviced with festive supplies with the continued permission of Whittlesey Christian Church and my thanks to all who pulled together to make this happen and in particular Sue and Joe Jennings who worked tirelessly. I am delighted to inform you that after a meeting of WEFA officials with Cambridgeshire County Council, Fenland District Council, Whittlesey Library and a NHS representative, an agreement has been reached to allow WEFA to continue permanent operations in the single storey brick building in the rear car park of Whittlesey Library. At the time of writing, I have completed the formal paperwork and await a date to make the necessary transfer of premises. A new constitution will be drawn up and an election of officers of WEFA will take place shortly under my continued chairmanship and formal agreements with local supermarkets in supplying food are being negotiated. Anyone requiring assistance should contact WEFA on their new number of 07375 143146. We now look forward to a new era for WEFA in which we will not only continue to supply food but with the assistance of our new partners will be able to offer extended support to try and tackle any social issues. My thanks go to everyone who has made this possible. A decision has been made to delay the proposed Whittlesey Heritage Centre at Kings Dyke Nature Reserve by six months. This is due to the shortfall at present in funding and the difficulties arising out of the prevailing COVID situation. Whilst the building of the centre will be delayed the seeking of full
planning permission and the terms of the lease will continue with a prospective revised opening of the centre in April 2023. Many residents have expressed their concern at the news that the Saxon Pit area is to be considered for development, principally a new Science Park to be built in conjunction with the new Anglia Ruskin University in Peterborough which is scheduled to open in September of this year. Any plans for development of the Saxon Pit area are at a very primary stage at present and I would like to assure residents that when more detailed proposals are put forward that they will have every opportunity of scrutinising the plans before any formal applications are made. Until next time… Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council
COUNCILLOR SURGERIES

INFINITI GARAGE DOORS
Whittlesey’s Local Garage Door Specialists
H
INFINITI GARAGE DOORS WAS STARTED IN EARLY 2020 BY PARTNERS NATALIE MARCH AND PHIL CLAY
aving decades working within the home improvement industries, including the replacement garage door sector, they decided to start the business with the focus on keeping to a small working radius, fair pricing, quality products and true customer service. Natalie explains: “We felt that we needed to offer something that the national companies have simply forgotten, the old-fashioned principles that should be instilled in every business nowadays. We keep our work local so we can offer our customers our complete attention. We are definitely not a UK wide company masquerading as local! “Phil and I live and work in Whittlesey and often bump into our customers whilst out shopping, many of whom we consider as friends now.”
FE B RUA RY 2022
In the middle of 2021, the partners made the big decision to start manufacturing their own roller garage doors and shutters. Phil elaborates: “We made the decision purely for customer satisfaction. As we only make doors for ourselves, we have increased levels of quality control and have implemented changes within our working environment that you simply cannot get from national large-scale factories. “We use the best aluminium products supplied by Alutech and we automate our doors with components from the UK’s largest and trusted supplier, Ellard. The products and manufacturing, combined with our superior installation and attention to detail, make our doors simply stunning.”

FENLAND BECOMES HOME TO JAPANESE SAKURA CHERRY TREE PROJECT Cherry blossoms are set to bloom in Whittlesey and across Fenland thanks to the gift of twenty-four trees as part of the Sakura Cherry Tree Project.
NEW SIGNAGE INSTALLED AT WHITTLESEA RAILWAY STATION Whittlesea and other Fenland railway stations have welcomed new arrivals to their platforms thanks to community rail funding. New station nameplates have been installed at Whittlesea, March and Manea stations by the Hereward Community Rail Partnership, with support from train operator Greater Anglia, to help improve their appearance and promote the local area. The community notice board headers at Whittlesea and Manea were also replaced as part of the signage project, which was funded by the Community Rail Network and the Department for Transport’s Community Rail Development Fund.
COATES CLUB CELEBRATES 65TH ANNIVERSARY
The trees are among 6500 Japanese cherry trees – or Sakura in Japanese – given to the UK by the Japanese Embassy, to celebrate Japan’s relationship with the UK. They were received locally by North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay, who donated them to each of the towns in his constituency. In Fenland, they are now being planted by the town councils with help from Fenland District Council. Mr Barclay said: “These trees will grow, flourish, and provide enjoyment to many for the next thirty years. I would like to thank the town councillors and Fenland District Council for helping organise, distribute and plant the trees.” Locally they have been planted at St Mary’s Church, Snowley Park, Pondersbridge Village Hall, Grounds Way in Coates, and Thornham Way play area in Eastrea. Another was aptly planted at Cherrytree Grove, thanks to help and support from Maria Walker and Sharee Jackson at Clarion Housing Photo: Cherry trees have been planted in Whittlesey as part of the Japanese Sakura Cherry Tree Project
The sun is always shining at Coates Silver Lining Club which is celebrating its 65th anniversary this month. The club is a relaxed place for over fifties to meet new friends over a game of whist or dominoes, and perhaps even take home the coveted annual trophy. Meeting at Coates Hall every Tuesday at 1.30pm3.30pm, membership is just £8 per year. Popular events include celebrating Pancake Day, sharing strawberry tea, and a Christmas meal. The group also organises excursions, such as coach trips, visits to garden centres, and meals out (COVID permitting). Why not pop down and enter the weekly raffle? No booking necessary, just come along! For more information, please contact Pauline Bedford on (01733) 841103. 20

The charity fundraises for syringe drivers which are small, computerised machines that can be programmed to deliver a steady stream of pain relief and other drugs in palliative care. These machines can help patients remain at home with their families instead of having to go into hospital or a hospice. Many large areas share a small number of these vital little machines which cost over £1100 each. Lee Nicholls, NGNPUK co-founder, said: “We’re really thankful for all the support from the public. These syringe drivers make such a difference to patients, their families, and the district nurse. We believe it is important for people to have the option for one when they need it, without waiting.” The latest twenty-four machines take the total donated into the local communities to 115. As well as donating machines, NGNPUK raise awareness of them and the important job they do in palliative care. The charity would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

Mindfulness
Finding Peace in a Fast-Paced World [ by Lucy Briggs ]
Instead of walking to our destination, we can simply get in a car. Instead of searching through books, we can instantly Google our answer. Instead of writing to a distant friend, we can tap on our phones and see their face on a video call.
D
espite boundless developments in technology, our brains have remained the same. Is our grey matter capable of dealing with how fast our world has become?
First, and foremost, we are animals; we crave safety and security. Constant streams of news can feel like an attack on our bodies. How can we shield ourselves?
Slow It Down! ‘Mindfulness’ is the process of appreciating the little things, noticing our senses, and clearing our mind. Certainly, much easier said than done, and I understand it can sound a little wacky, but here are some simple things you could try this month…
1
Mindful eating - Take a small piece of food, perhaps some chocolate or a grape. Eat it slowly, paying attention to how it feels. What is the texture like? Is it sweet or savoury? Is it hot or cold? Does it have an aroma? Does it make a crunching sound?
2 60 28
Breathe - Breathe in deeply through your nose while counting to three. Hold that breath for three. Then exhale through your
D I S C O V E R I N G
Bourne Whittlesea
mouth for three. Wait for three, then repeat. Try different variations of this – different counts and different speeds. It can help to make a noise on exhaling too. Try a humming sound, or a whooshing of air, no matter how silly it feels!
3
Notice an animal - For those of us blessed to have pets, stroking an animal can be incredibly soothing. We can notice their breathing patterns, the way their tail moves, or patterns in their fur. For those of us without, there are plenty of birds around as spring approaches. Watch the way they hop, peck at the ground, or soar above us.
4
Get outside - I walk in nature every day and relish the opportunity to ignore my phone for a while. Walk without headphones. What can you hear? Touch things! What does the tree’s bark feel like? Stop and literally smell the flowers! I like to walk with ‘a photographer’s eye’, looking for beautiful shots, even if I don’t have my camera on me. Seeing the sun beaming through the trees on a frosty winter’s morning is enough to make anyone forget the cares of this fast world, if even for just a moment. Take care of yourself!

Botox and Fillers g in d n ta s r e Und
O
ver the past few years, injectable aesthetics treatments which reduce the signs of ageing, improve the appearance of the skin and define the contours of the face, have become increasingly popular. Fillers, Botox and skin boosters in particular are highly sought after. But what are they and how do they work?
Anti-Wrinkle Treatment
BEFORE
AFTER
Skin Booster Treatment
Botox The word ‘Botox’ is just a brand name for a purified neurotoxin called Botulinum Toxin. Botulinum toxin is most commonly used to reduce and prevent the appearance of wrinkles of the frown, the forehead, the crow’s feet, and around the mid to lower face. It can also be used to create a ‘neck lift’ and reduce the appearance of a sagging neck and jowls. When injected into a muscle, Botulinum toxin works by blocking the nerve signals to that muscle. This reduces muscle contraction. Therefore, wrinkles that have formed from this muscle contraction will soften and reduce.
Dermal Fillers There is a misconception that dermal fillers are ‘plastic’; however, this is not true. They are made of hyaluronic acid (HA) which is naturally found in our bodies. It keeps our skin plump and hydrated by attracting water. As we age, our skin loses volume and wrinkles form. Dermal fillers can be injected into our bodies to replace this volume loss and to smooth out wrinkles. They can also be used to enhance someone’s features, for example, to add projection to a flat chin, to add definition to a jawline, or to enhance the shape of the lips.

Results cannot be guaranteed and some clients may require several treatments to achieve a more noticeable improvement
Fillers come in different consistencies depending on how the chemical chains of HA are cross-linked (bonded). The thinnest HA products are fluid in consistency as they are non-cross-linked. These are referred to as ‘skin boosters’ rather than ‘fillers’. The more premium skin boosters are packed with essential nutrients, antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids. They are so thin that they do not change the shape of a face, but they are highly effective in improving the appearance and texture of the skin. Thicker fillers are a gel-like consistency and enable us to add volume or re-shape areas which require this. As with every aesthetics treatment there is a small risk of potential side effects, so it is important that your practitioner provides you with an in-depth consultation to fully explain the risks and aftercare. A competent practitioner will be able to provide evidence of training in the management of potential complications to ensure client safety. They will be confident in how to reverse and/or treat any medical complication which may arise.

We Are Sorry For Your Loss
‘Discovering Magazines’ are community magazines, issued monthly and distributed to houses and businesses in the local area. They are read and enjoyed by many people. At a sad time like this, we understand that it is not easy to deal with everything following the loss of a loved one. However, one thing which we feel might help you come to terms with your loss is to share with others some information and some of the many memories you may have. So, if you would like us to include a piece about your loved one, maybe including some photographs, please get in touch with us and we would be delighted to share it with our many readers, (at no cost to yourself!) by publishing it in our next issue.

Good Result For Local School
S
taff at Whittlesey’s New Road Primary & Nursery School are celebrating receiving their first ‘Good’ Ofsted grade ever!
Excelling in all areas, the leadership of Executive Headteacher Rob Litten and Aspire Learning Trust has boosted their grading from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’ in just four years. Rob said: “I am incredibly proud of every member of staff. Each and every one played their part in helping New Road Primary & Nursery School become the amazing school it is today! We are the first team to achieve a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating for the school in its forty-year history. “This is a very special moment for us all to be proud of! It is a privilege to work with such a dedicated team and an even bigger privilege to provide our pupils with the high-quality education they deserve and should also be proud of.” Despite the challenges faced in a global pandemic, the staff were praised by inspectors for being ‘ambitious for every pupil’, and the pupils were described as ‘happy and polite.’ And it seems that they have much to be happy about… The school recently built a £6.2-million extension, housing eight new classrooms and a purposebuilt sixty-place nursery. Since New Road Nursery School joined the Primary School in 2018, it has gone from strength to strength. The recent Ofsted report noted that ‘the youngest children laugh and squeal with excitement when staff read to them.’
As well as new classrooms, the existing ones were completely refurbished, and new exits and entrances were added to the building, along with a purpose-built hall, big enough for 420 children. As for outdoors, there is now a brand-new playground, a multi-use games area for sports such as netball and football, and a newly re-designed playing field. Pupil numbers are currently at an all-time high of 170, with hopes to increase to 210 by the end of the year, and all the way up to 420 in the next five-ten years. Duncan Ramsey, CEO of Aspire Learning Trust, said: “I am so pleased for the community of Whittlesey that New Road Primary & Nursery School has received such a glowing report. Leaders and staff have worked tirelessly to improve the school and they should be very proud with the outcome of this inspection.”

By Natalie Brannigan
Conduct Market Research f you have ever seen an episode of Dragon’s Den, you already know why you should always test your business idea first. Too many budding entrepreneurs spend a small fortune building a product nobody wants to use.
Of course, there’s the good, the bad and the ugly associated with market research and having your family and friends on board with your idea is far from a reliable proof of concept. You should have identified your target audience and analyse their pain points to produce a unique value proposition. Only then will you receive valuable feedback.

Energy Prices Are Rising By Eamonn Dorling
T
here is pressure on the central government to help those likely to suffer most from rising energy prices. However, it is more complex than expecting taxpayers to support energy companies by offering funds. For example, do the suppliers volunteer to keep tariffs low? What if they pocket the funds? Then there is the argument that fossil fuel prices are left to fend for themselves. After all, we all want lower greenhouse emissions if global warming is to be addressed. So, should more effort go into helping to create more sustainable energy such as wind waves and solar generation, which will stabilise energy prices and reduce emissions? If fossil fuels are to be more effectively used, for example, developing high-tech lubricants? Maybe the scarcity will raise prices further, and fuels such as coal that have limited uses other than combustion should be left in the ground? All of this helps individuals little in the short term. A few things to consider: If you anticipate that your energy bills will rise, don’t wait for a handout – increase your direct debit now so that you build up a credit rather than lag behind. Consider how energy use can be reduced by using alternative transport, reducing transport distances by shopping locally and planning trips to achieve multiple purposes. Could energy for space and water heating be reduced by better-designed systems, improved
insulation and less wasteful use? Wash clothes in cooler temperatures and dry clothes outside rather than dryers. The Government will need to be seen to help, but in reality, market forces of supply and demand will dominate. Investment in energyefficient housing stock and using free wind and solar energy will eventually pay dividends, in my opinion. Meanwhile, do what you can to keep your budget working. BROADBAND BOOST WILL BRING BENEFITS By Steve Barclay MP
I
’m delighted that CityFibre has chosen March as its next location to roll out full fibre – following Peterborough and Cambridge.
The £5 million investment in the town to install a state-of-the-art broadband network that will allow residents and businesses to access gigabit speeds from a range of internet service providers is a huge boost. It will make March one of the best digitally connected places in the UK, drive economic benefit and complement existing improvements planned for the town including the Government’s multi-million-pound high street funding. Good broadband is an essential service that we rely on more and more. The pandemic has shown how important digital connectivity is for working from home, home-schooling and simply keeping in touch with friends and family. As the rise in smart devices continues, our requirements for greater speed and improved reliability of connectivity will also increase. I hope March is just the start and that this will be rolled out throughout the constituency, and I will continue to make this case so we quickly cover as many areas as possible. I’m also very pleased to see the new, tougher measures to tackle hare coursing, which I have called for over a number of years. The current legislation dates back to the early 1800s so these proposals to simplify and strengthen the law are very welcome. We know this barbaric activity does take place in our constituency, causing damage to crops and farm property as well as being very cruel to animals. There is also a close association with other criminal activities such as theft, violence and intimidation. The new powers will see unlimited fines, up to six months in prison and a ban on offenders keeping dogs, as well as two new criminal offences. I’m sure farmers, wildlife campaigners, police and
residents will back these measures, which should have a significant impact on a crime that in particular impacts rural communities. The Fenland Stations Regeneration project is close to completion in March and Manea. The £1.66 million March station facilities involving the redesign of the building on Platform 1 with a new open plan ticket office, waiting area, toilets and shop, plus car park extension are on track. Similarly, the Manea improvements to create a new one hundred-space car park are in their final stages. Investment in our transport infrastructure is vital and I will continue to push for more funding on projects like this in the constituency. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is this year and I hope residents across the constituency will get involved in one of the numerous events and initiatives taking place to celebrate. I was delighted to plant a tree in Wimblington as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy. The birch tree, organised by Wimblington Parish Council, is just one of many that will be planted across the constituency as people are invited to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ and learn more about the best ways to plant trees so they survive and flourish. Finally, I couldn’t let an opportunity pass to encourage as many people as possible to get a booster jab if not already the case, and for those who haven’t had the first or second dose to sign up or head along to a walk-in centre. It’s an essential part of our fight against coronavirus and we’re all safer when more people are vaccinated. The incredible efforts of our pharmacists, hospital hubs, GPs, large scale vaccination centres, teams vaccinating our housebound patients, local authorities, CCG and volunteers are appreciated. To book your jab please go to www.nhs.uk/conditions/ coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination or call 119.
