Welcome to your March issue...

T

his is the month, of course, when we mothers are allotted by our partners and families a full day of doing nothing...

A whole day in which we are spoilt rotten with flowers, chocolates, and perfume (especially if someone had actually ‘underdone’ the Valentine’s Day gift-fest last month!) Tell me if you think I’m dropping too big a hint here! Seriously, we do not expect the earth on Mother’s Day. It’s just lovely to get some recognition, whatever form that may take, for all our multi-tasking abilities and for our levelheadedness and calm when the waters of the family home may sometimes get a little choppy! It was the American novelist, Peter De Vries, who suggested that “a mother's role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car forever after." How true! Enjoy your day, girls, and enjoy this month’s issue.

Claire x

Is it me or are things starting to look a little more positive? Two years after the Government issued the first ‘stay at home’ instructions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as I write this new cases, hospital admissions and deaths are now falling and life is starting to feel more normal. Things locally also seem to be more buoyant as more events are being announced for the coming months. This coupled with the start of British Summer Time on March 27th gives one cause for greater optimism. Let’s hope the Summer of 2022 is one to remember and the weather gods smile on us… we deserve it!

in has long been an extremely popular alcoholic beverage. This flavoured white spirit utilises barley, corn or rye in its distillation, and dates from the Middle Ages.

The base flavour comes from juniper berries. Many different styles of gin are available today. Gin cocktails are a regular choice, for numerous devotees, and the worldrenowned ‘Gin & Tonic’ is always a favourite with many. Highclere Castle in Hampshire is located approximately five miles south of Newbury, Berkshire, and is home to the 8th Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. Highclere Castle and the Estate have been used, both internally and externally, for many films and TV productions, including Downton Abbey. The Carnarvon family have resided at Highclere Castle since 1679. Royal guests, plus statesmen, famous musicians, and celebrities are all amongst numerous visitors who have been welcomed to this exceptional property and location. Highclere Castle Gin (Alc. 43.5% Vol.) is multi awardwinning, having garnered over fifty spirit awards since their launch in 2019.The gin is produced from one of the oldest copper gin stills, dating back to the 19th century, in England’s oldest gin distillery. Very carefully,

botanicals, grown on the Highclere Estate, were selected and then after two years of experimenting, finally the selections were chosen for the recipe. The botanicals include essential oils and give Highclere Castle Gin its outstanding, unique, smooth, and elegant flavour. Citrus forward with juniper, lavender, coriander, lime flower, citrus peels, angelica root, cassia bark, green cardamom, liquorice root and peppercorns, plus Highclere oats are all included to produce the exquisite production.

On its own, with ice, Gin & Tonic, Classic Martini, Negroni, White Lady, or whatever a favourite choice is, I found this gin most certainly did not disappoint – the prestigious awards that keep coming, are testament to that! WHITTLESEY IN BLOOM CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Whittlesey in Bloom, the small band of like-minded volunteers who help brighten the town, is now urging others to join. With COVID to contend with, the volunteers have soldiered on observing the regulations. The group has received many positive comments as it has tried to keep the town vibrant with the planters at the bus stop on Grosvenor Road, and at the Market Street/Queen Street and Eastgate/High Causeway junctions, the Pound on Aliwal Road, the Garden of Rest, the area adjacent to Lakeside, New Queen Street surgery car park and the entrance to the Manor and the cemetery. If you are interested, please get in touch either by telephoning 07887 801117 or by email to kayfmayor48@gmail.com Volunteers can do as much or as little as they want; every bit of help will be gratefully received.

COUNCIL SUPPORTS QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY Whittlesey Town Council is supporting The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), a unique tree-planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the UK to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.’ Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girl Guiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools, and corporates will be encouraged to play their part to enhance the environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March. Whittlesey Town Council will be supporting and co-ordinating an initial seventy indigenous trees for planting later in the year. Sites have been identified and liaisons with Fenland District Council throughout the project will be maintained. WTC co-ordinator Cllr Roy Gerstner is inviting all community groups, individuals, and organisations to sponsor, support, and get involved in this fantastic legacy to our monarch. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR In recent weeks numerous residents on the Snoots Road Estate have expressed their anxiety at the prospect of additional waste materials being brought to the Saxon Pit industrial area in addition to those already being imported under licence. Concerns have also been expressed over the current noise levels emanating from the pit, the associated working hours and on occasions unacceptable odours. I would like to reassure residents that all is being done at Whittlesey Town Council that is in the public interest. We constantly liaise with such bodies as the Environment Agency, Cambridgeshire County Council and Fenland District Council Environmental Health to monitor the situation at the pit and this will continue. At a recent Whittlesey Town Council planning committee meeting an application for the importation of bottom ash by Johnson Aggregates was unanimously recommended for refusal.

you will also find a book stall and raffle for your participation. I would also like to mention the forthcoming Mayor's Civic Ball to be held at the Manor Leisure Centre, Whittlesey on Saturday, March 12th, 2022, which resumes after missing out last year through COVID. Application forms along with menu choices are available through our Town Clerk, Mrs Sue Piergianni at the Whittlesey Town Council Offices in Queen Street. Until next time… Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council

REFLEXOLOGY ON THE AGENDA FOR LADYSMITH WI Whittlesey Ladysmith WI’s meeting this month will feature a demonstration of Reflexology and Neal’s Yard remedies with Stephanie Hyndman. It will be held at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 8th at St Andrew’s Parish Hall. Guests are welcome to come along and make new friends. For more information ring president Liz Phillips on 0798 2854872.

Wearing one of my other hats as a churchwarden I am delighted that St Andrew’s Church is again fully operational after being closed for long periods due to a combination of COVID restrictions and extensive dry rot which has now been treated at final cost of around £40,000.

COATES WI MEMBERS’ MUSICAL MEETING

Work of this nature has naturally drained church finances and I am obliged to Whittlesey Town Council for a grant of £10,000 and donations from individuals without whom there was a real danger of closure of the church permanently. Thanks also go to The Whittlesey Charity for their support over many years that enables the church to effectively function for the community.

Some members showed interest in joining their group, which is held on the last Thursday of every month from 2pm-3.30pm at Whittlesey Baptist Church, Gracious Street.

In recent months a series of coffee mornings held on the second Tuesday of the month at St Andrew’s Parish Hall from 10am-12pm have proved very successful and enjoyable. Please come along to the next event on Tuesday, March 8th for good company and an excellent variety of refreshments. Entry is free with donations being requested and

Coates WI’s February meeting saw Kathryn Gray and her husband from the Music Makers group in Whittlesey give members a chance to sing along with them in what was a very enjoyable evening.

Coates WI’s next meeting is on March 2nd and will feature Ruth Youart, who will speak about district nursing. Guests and new members are always welcome to to join. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month (no meeting January) at Coates Village Hall at 7.30pm. For any information, please contact Fiona on (01733) 208516 or Jen on 0770 3385661.

REMEMBERING

T

Tommy Robson

ommy Robson was dubbed ‘Sir Tommy’ by fans of Peterborough United after becoming probably the greatest Posh ‘Legend’. His illustrious career saw him playing in the old First Division (now the Premier League) before he took a step down to join Fourth Division Posh in 1968. Tommy fell in love with Peterborough and in thirteen seasons at London Road, he won the Fourth Division championship title and made an all-time record 559 appearances, He also scored an incredible 128 goals and was twice voted ‘Player of the Season’.

When Tommy finally left Posh at 37 years of age, he played non-league football at Stamford. Tommy’s Posh connection continued for more than fifty years and he had spells as manager of the youth team, was part of the commentary team on BBC local radio, and set up the ‘Posh Legends’, a team of ex-players who raised money for local charities. He was also a sponsors’ matchday host giving guided-tours of the London Road ground. He did all this in addition to his “daytime” jobs. Tommy became the first inductee into the ‘Posh Hall of Fame’ and was also later awarded the high honour of the ‘Freedom of the City of Peterborough’. 10

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

In 2019, following the devastating news that Tommy had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, Posh fans Dene Butler and Ray Cole, approached Tommy to ask if he would be interested in writing a book, in which he could tell the many stories and anecdotes, for which he was well-known. Whenever Tommy was in front of an audience, he had a neverending supply of hilarious football-related tales. The resulting book, ‘Tommy Robson On The Wing’ tells Tommy’s story from childhood, through his football career and his life after he hung up his boots. It also features some rarely-seen photographs from Tommy’s personal albums. Tommy fought his battle with this horrible disease with the same tenacity that he always showed on the pitch, but he always knew he was fighting a losing battle and in October 2020, he sadly died. It quickly emerged that a such a ‘legend’, deserved a lasting memorial, in the form of a lifesize bronze statue, to stand alongside that of his great friend Chris Turner. So, with the support of the Posh Supporters Trust it was decided to go ahead with publishing the book and donate all profits to the Tommy Robson Statue Fund and the MND Association.

Peterborough United agreed to stock and sell the book for free. It is available from the Posh Club Shop or online at www.theposhonlinestore.com at £9.99 (plus p&p where applicable). It is also available on eBay or you can email inposhwetrust@gmail.com to order a copy. M A R CH 2 0 2 2

Introducing Clearanail®

C

learanail® is a patented product for treating Fungal Nail (Onychomycosis). Traditional antifungal solutions applied to the nail, cannot penetrate the nail plate to easily reach the infection underneath.

• Clearanail® is based upon Controlled Micro Penetration (CMP)® that makes tiny holes in the nail plate. • The holes allow topical treatments to reach the nail bed in much higher concentration levels than otherwise possible. • Effective for treating advanced infections in the nail root. • Results are fast – usually visible in 2-8 weeks. • Does it hurt? No you usually won’t feel anything, because the device is computer controlled to ensure that it retracts as soon as it breaks through the nail bed i.e. it does not damage the nail bed.

JOIN TOGETHER TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOAL

By Steve Barclay MP

has the potential of injecting up to £10 million into football facilities in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire over the next ten years.

C

ommunities can achieve almost anything when they stand together and pursue a single goal. I’m always amazed and delighted by the successes of groups and organisations working together with their communities. One of those, which deserves high praise, is Leverington Sport and Social Club and Leverington Sports Youth FC who have been working hard for years to bring fresh investment into facilities at the club and have been rewarded with a £473,788 grant by the Government’s Football Foundation, the Premier League and the FA. I joined Steve Fisher, Matt Warren, and Wayne Garner from Leverington Sports and Social Club, and Katie Critchley from Cambridgeshire FA, for the announcement which means the long dreamed-for floodlit 9v9 3G pitch will become a reality. They’ve done an incredible fundraising job and have been rewarded with extra funding that will deliver an amazing asset that many can enjoy. The new training facility could be in place by the summer and will not only relieve pressure from the grass pitches, but will allow further football opportunities for disabled people, female players and health and wellbeing sessions. The Football Foundation and Cambridgeshire FA in line with the Local Football Facility Plan

This year is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrating Her Majesty becoming the first British monarch to celebrate seventy years on the throne. Events and activities – both local and national – are already in the planning stage, and I wanted to highlight some grant funding that is available. Sport England will make awards, using National Lottery funding, of between £300 and £10,000 for projects that bring a community together and provide opportunities for people who may be less physically active, prioritising disadvantaged communities. Meanwhile, the Arts Council England has grants of between £750 and £10,000 available to voluntary and community organisations for creative events. I know many constituents will want to get involved in something this year to celebrate the jubilee, and alongside these local events it will be great to help secure grant funding for local sports and community groups. Out and about in the constituency, it was a pleasure to meet Andrew and the team at A.G. Cannon Removals in March and great to see a local family business that has gone from strength to strength, with Andrew and Christine’s children and even grandchildren now part of the story. Also, did you know that key parts of the Brit Oval were made in our constituency? Or if you stand on new London Bridge station platforms it is the work of skilled local staff from Littleport? As a local MP you often see amazingly innovative businesses behind gates which otherwise you simply drive past. A big thank you to Patrick Sexton at the Littleport factory of FP McCann, which is a leading manufacturer of precast concrete that is at the heart of many major building and transport schemes.

TOP TIP

G MARKETIN By Natalie Brannigan

Arrange a Focus Group

T

he idea of a focus group is to gather a small group of people and ask them about their opinions, perceptions, or beliefs about your concept.

It is a good way of gaining some insight on what people think of your product, service, and brand. Focus groups are cheap and easy to set up and the benefits of using them include: • Great product feedback • Involve people in data analysis • You only need a handful of people You should use your findings from the focus group and generate a report containing key information, such as who attended and what the overall outcome was.

PETER AND THOMAS SET FOR KOREAN ADVENTURE Two Whittlesey youngsters have been selected to represent Cambridgeshire at a massive Scout Jamboree to be held in South Korea during 2023. Peter Easterbrook and Thomas Cox, who delivers Discovering Whittlesea magazine each month, will join 50,000 young people from almost every nation on earth in what will be the largest Scout camp held since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. They will be two of 3240 young people that have been selected from the UK to take part in the World Scout Jamboree, a skills, cultural and adventure festival which offers young people the chance to learn new skills that they can use in other aspects of their life as well as campaign for change on key world issues that matter to them. Between now and July 2023, Peter and Thomas will attend training camps and team building events preparing them for living on the hot and humid site in SaeManGeum, Korea. UK Chief Scout, Bear Grylls, said: “Congratulations to all those who have been selected to go on this amazing adventure! World Scout Jamborees only happen every four years and tens of thousands of Scouts from across the world attend each one. “Young people will experience different cultures, languages and cuisine while learning new skills. After two very difficult years, it is so important that these young people have this opportunity. The 2023 Jamboree, hosted by Korea, is set to be one of the biggest and most exciting yet. The theme is ‘Think M A R CH 2 0 2 2

big. Dream wild. Act together’ – focusing especially on how we can be trailblazers in creating a sustainable world together.” If you want to find out more about their trip, or would like to help them on their way, the boys have set up a ‘Gofundme’ page https://gofund.me/ df3ee77d The boys said: “We have been lucky enough to be selected to represent Cambridgeshire at the 25th World Scout Jamboree 2023 in SaeManGeum, South Korea. This is a huge privilege as these events are only held every four years and the selection process is tough. “In order to attend this event, we need to raise £3895 each over the next eighteen months. This fee is set by the Scouting organisation and as well as covering travel, insurance, accommodation, training camps etc, it also puts money into a fund to help underprivileged UK children attend and to help children from poorer countries of the world to attend, in order to guarantee that this is a truly inclusive and world-encompassing jamboree. “We will be busy fundraising in lots of different ways both individually and together. Please keep an eye out for our events – we are planning raffles, tombolas, quiz nights, bingo, car washes, stalls at local events etc.”

Mental Health How Can I Help? [ by Lucy Briggs ]

Did you know that one in four of us will suffer from a mental health issue at one point in our lives? Every single person will know someone who has experienced the struggle.

E 1

veryone’s experience is unique and different, yet there are a few easy things that every one of us can do to try and help those around us.

Listen: If someone is struggling, it can be almost instinctive to say things like, “Things will get better”, or “Cheer up, it could be worse”. Although we may think we’re being helpful, sentiments such as these can cause our friends and family to feel misunderstood. Think about how you might talk to someone who had a physical illness. We would never dream of telling them to ‘snap out of it’. We would most likely offer them support, kindness, and space to explore their feelings. Why should we treat mental health issues any differently?

2

Ask how you can help: A phrase as simple as “Is there anything I can do to help?” can go a long way. Somebody suffering from anxiety may appreciate company while doing the weekly shop. Somebody suffering from depression may appreciate going for a walk and a chat. Everybody is different, and what might work for you won’t necessarily work for others. Simply asking can often be the

60 20

D I S C O V E R I N G

Bourne Whittlesea

gateway to a very helpful conversation.

3

Don’t treat them any differently: If a loved one tells you that they have been diagnosed with a mental health issue, and perhaps they are taking new medication or seeing a therapist, it can be an incredibly scary time for them. Many people suffering from mental health conditions fear being misunderstood. I know that when I have struggled in my past, I have really appreciated the normal things, like laughing along to a favourite TV show with my family or having a chat about something completely unrelated to my illness. They are still the same person; they are just having a tough time.

4

Look after yourself: Be sure to not neglect how you are feeling and be kind to yourself. There are plenty of resources on the Mind website (www.mind.org.uk) that I would highly recommend for those supporting a friend, family member, or co-worker, and of course for those suffering themselves.

You never know what someone else is going through. A little kindness can go a very long way. Take care of yourselves!

‘Friends Theatre’ Opens At Local School

T

he new year started with an exciting new addition to the Park Lane Primary and Nursery School. The highly anticipated ‘Friends Theatre’ was recently opened after an extensive renovation of what was the school’s ICT suite.

After a whole school wireless upgrade, and investment in new iPads and laptops with high processing speeds, the ICT suite became redundant and a fantastic opportunity arose. Where once rows of desktop computers stood, there is now an open dance floor and a bespoke built stage. The striking black interior, with blackout curtains and blinds, creates an inspiring dance and performance space. Park Lane currently runs an after-school musical theatre, drama and dance club three nights a week, and by popular demand is hoping to extend this offer soon. Music lessons are already being held in the Friends Theatre, including lessons for aspiring rock and pop performers. The school’s musical instruments are to be permanently moved to the theatre, making this incredible space the heart of performing arts in the school, and also the community of Whittlesey,

as, in the near future, the school hopes to be able to offer the Friends Theatre for hire to the general public. Boasting seating for sixty people, with a versatile and professional-standard performance area that will suit most small performances, this is a truly wonderful addition to the local community. The school now hopes to develop a primary drama curriculum that will enable pupils to excel at secondary school and build their confidence to participate in local amateur productions. Recently, the school’s curriculum – known as the ‘Whittlesey Primary Curriculum’ – was identified as being ‘exceptionally strong’ at a recent Ofsted inspection. Written by teachers at Park Lane and New Road Schools, the next step is to integrate the performing arts right into the heart of its excellent curriculum offer. Mr Litten, Executive Headteacher, said: “Drama is often overlooked in primary schools, but it is such a powerful and inspirational experience for young people to be involved in. The addition of drama, and further opportunities for pupils to engage in music, dance and musical theatre will help all of the children develop greater confidence in stage craft.” The refurbishment of the ICT suite was made possible by generous donations from Friends of Park Lane Primary School and from the Whittlesey Nisa Store.

Increase in Defibrillators IN WHITTLESEY

A

fter a long break due to the dreaded coronavirus, we feel it is time for Defibrillators For All to restart engaging with our community.

We have increased the number of defibrillators in the town, including placing some in houses. A message has been sent to all our schools to let them know that we are offering free first aid training to all Key Stage 2 pupils again. This is something we would like to offer on an annual basis now it is part of the national curriculum. Several of our childminders have borrowed training defibrillators and the children have practised doing CPR and using the defibrillator. We have already started training in the community (again this is free but donations allow us to continue all the good work). More open sessions will be planned throughout the year.

28

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

We have updated all our defibrillators and have new cabinets to replace those that were decaying. CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) is still the only organisation performing heart screening and they have no appointments available at all for us this year. We will try to book as early in 2023 as we can (school holidays have already been booked for the whole of 2023). Our lottery remains a great source of income for us. If you would like to join please let us know ASAP either by email defibrillatorsforall@gmail.com or on our face book group www.facebook.com/groups/374482136019253

March Gardening Tips

ays are lengthening and clocks “spring” forward an hour on March 27th. The increase in hours of light triggers new growth and not just crops, but weeds! Dig out any perennial weeds and hoe regularly.

The soil should start to warm up this month; to help increase soil warmth, cover the plot in • plastic or use cloches. Keeping your soil at its best involves adding decaying plant matter • such as compost or manure. Try splitting your plot into thirds: one third heavily enriched, (good for potatoes, peas, beans etc and salad crops); one third topped with a mulch of good • compost, (which will suit onions, cabbages, leeks, broccoli etc); one third unenriched, • (for root crops such as parsnips and carrots). If you want to grow asparagus, now is the time to prepare your bed and plant the crowns by digging a trench twelve inches deep and adding some well-rotted manure. Make a four-inch ridge at the base and spread the roots of the crown over the ridge, replace the soil, leaving the tips just visible. Water in and add mulch. Leave the asparagus for two years before actually harvesting – it’s well worth the wait! Other jobs to do: • Lettuces and other salad crops can be sown either indoors or outdoors under cloches or in cold frames. Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors at the end of the month. • Sow Brussels sprouts, cabbage, sprouting broccoli indoors and, to take full advantage

THE SHED SHOP

• • •

of the ripening season, sow aubergines, chillies, and peppers indoors. Herbs such as rosemary and sage will benefit from a good trim and chives and mint can be propagated by dividing them and re-planting. Plant out onion and shallot sets – last chance to plant garlic. Early varieties of carrot, beetroot, spring onions, peas, chard, parsnips, spinach, and broad beans can be sown into the open ground but may need to be under cover. Last chance for planting bare-rooted fruit trees and bushes. Feed and mulch fruit trees –fertilise the base, water in and then cover with well rotted manure or compost to act as a mulch. Check cabbages for caterpillars and pick off. Remove dead leaves from cabbages and Brussels. Don’t forget to feed your over-wintered crops such as onions, kale, spring cabbage – use blood, fish and bone meal, chicken manure or seaweed–based organic fertiliser. Prepare seed beds by raking over to a fine tilth and add fertiliser.

• Early potatoes can be planted out if the ground is not frozen, from mid-March to early April but it is well worth covering them to protect them from the late frosts. Happy gardening!

Simple Steps to Save on Your Energy Bills By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The worst of the winter weather may be over, but with ongoing headlines of utility bill hikes and more of us permanently working from home, how can we save money? Popping on the kettle for that extra cuppa, keeping the chill off during daytime hours and having the TV or radio on while we work all have an impact on our energy usage. According to the Energy Saving Trust, the cost of living is at its highest level in a decade, with household energy bills being the largest expense. The recent gas crisis has pushed energy bills up by well over £200 since last winter and they’re expected to rise again in April. While there are some government grants that can be applied for, here are a few simple but effective energy-saving tips: • Turning down your room thermostat by just one degree can save around £60 a year. • A fully draught-proof home could save around £25 a year. • Boilers account for around 55% of what is spent on energy bills in a year. • Turning off the lights will lead to a £15 a year saving 15:38 but switching to LED bulbs will save £40 a year. • Laptops, TVs, and game consoles account for around 7% of your energy bill. • A single computer and monitor left on 24 hours a day will cost around £45 a year. Switching them off out of hours and enabling standby features could reduce this to less than £10 a year each and prolong the lifespan of equipment. • A dripping tap can waste more than 5,500 litres of water a year, so make sure your taps are properly turned off and change faulty washers promptly. • Fitting your hot water cylinder with an insulating jacket will save you £20 a year in heating costs and 110kg of carbon dioxide emissions. • Your room thermostat should be set between 18°C and 21°C. If you only have a single room thermostat for the whole house, for every degree you increase the temperature, it will increase the heating bill by about 10%. • Getting younger family members to play their part too can promote energy saving awareness that will lead to cheaper utility bills. Safe Local Trades has reliable tradesmen who can carry out property improvements that can save you money, as well as those who specialise in energy saving solutions for your home or business. Alto Electrical send Big Love and thanks to ‘Bourne in Business’

A

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

n important part of being in business is having a network of people that know you. But what happens when times get tough; do these people still offer the same support? The guys at ‘Bourne in Business’ do!

We attend this local business group in Bourne and have done for many years now. It starts in a venue (currently the Shambles in The Old Town Hall) and usually ends in the pub. I can’t tell you how much support we’ve had from this group. Through all the highs and the lows, they have given unfaltering love and support whilst we, as a business, struggled through the past eighteen months. I strongly suggest that if you have a local business, you tap into this local network as they are an amazing bunch who always have your back!

For more information about ‘Bourne in Business’, please contact Claire on 07837 499061 It is down to the support and loyalty of these business friends (and, of course, our loyal clients) that we have managed to ‘pull through to the other side’ and we have just moved into a lovely big new office in Essendine! This year looks really good so far, and we have some exciting plans that you will hear more about later. We welcome ‘drop-ins if anyone would like to come and talk to us about any electrical issues. We also have some wonderful new facilities such as smart screens so we can welcome Scouts/Brownies/ WI/home educating groups etc for talks and activities. If you would like to discuss anything like this, please call Coleen to see what we can offer.

Deciding who makes the tea round is a competitive sport

Domestic

Also, thank you everyone for having faith in us as a business and keeping us going when times were tough. We are indebted to our local community, and we won’t forget it!

ENERGY PRICE FOCUS By Eamonn Dorling

L

ast month, I suggested that central government reduces the impact of soaring energy prices. Adjusting the household budget and reducing consumption is better than waiting for the demand for payment. This month I want to get closer to the options: The energy price cap is the maximum amount a utility company can charge an average customer in the UK per year for the amount of electricity and gas they use, preventing businesses from simply passing on cost increases to the consumer. The cap is not a blanket maximum. It is an indication for the 'average user'. It is currently £1277 and came into effect in October 2021 – it represented an increase of twelve percent. Speculation is that the new cap could be fifty percent higher when confirmed in April this year. It applies to domestic premises but not a business. A business does not currently have protection from market prices, so if wholesale prices continue to rise, a commercial tariff may fully reflect those changes. Further speculation is that the increased cap will still result in energy providers losing money on their domestic customers' energy. It might mean that the actual energy inflation rate will be levied on consumers who are not protected by the cap. The cost of Natural Gas peaked in December 2021. However, wind and solar generation have reduced in recent months, so more expensive fossil fuel is used to generate electricity. At the same time, petrol and diesel fuel prices remain high, influencing transport

costs. This creates inflationary pressures that are passed on to the end-user. Getting a better return on investments and pension is always essential, but currently, the investment environment is changing (expecting the creation of wealth from vanishing resources is a challenge we have not experienced before). New profitable investment opportunities require research and understanding. Remember, there are few guarantees in this world, but if inflation is higher than the returns from your investment – your purchasing power is going down. If this concerns you, speak with an independent financial adviser. Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results and any forecast is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Mother's Day Mother’s Day is celebrated in a variety of ways in different countries and at different times of the year. Although the way it is celebrated may vary from country to country, the importance of a mother and the debt of gratitude to her that we all owe is recognized by us all, wherever we may be. “Mothering Sunday” is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In medieval times, when the children of poor families would often be sent to rich people’s homes to work as domestic help, these youngsters would collect flowers to give to their mother and bake special cakes which they called “Mothering cakes”. Nowadays, it is celebrated by presenting gifts, flowers and organising meals for the family. In Germany, Mother’s Day is called “Muttertag” and is celebrated on the second Sunday of May except during Pentecost when it falls on the first Sunday. During World War II, Mother’s Day took on a political significance. Mothers were praised for supplying children for the ‘Fatherland’ and awarded medals based on how many they produced. After the war, the relevance of Mother’s Day changed, and people now gave cards, gifts, and flowers. On the second Sunday of May, Australians gift various kinds of flowers to their mother, particularly carnations and chrysanthemums. Besides mothers, grandmothers and aunts also receive gifts. Many organisations throughout Australia also arrange events to raise money on this day. Again, in Japan, the second Sunday in May and again, mothers are showered with beautiful carnations throughout the country. Children traditionally show their love for their mothers by drawing pictures of their mother for them, with art competitions organised too. Mother’s Day in France is known as “Fete des Meres” and is celebrated in early June or at the end of May, in accordance with Pentecost. Mothers can relax in the knowledge that their children provide meals and gifts for them, besides reciting poems. Like many other countries, the day of celebration in Brazil is observed on the second Sunday in May and is a commercial holiday. Church gatherings and special performances by children take place, alongside large barbecues, where dads can perform their traditional cooking duties, while mums relax!
