Welcome to your April issue...

I

’m often surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we move on each year from those cold, dark mornings and all that rain and those gale force winds – I’ve already forgotten the names of this year’s dreadful storms! Blossom is now on show and summer is nearly upon us. As ever, I hope you find the wide range of topics included in this month’s magazine both informative and enjoyable. Many thanks to all the contributors and advertisers for their hard work and for your continuing support and words of encouragement. Enjoy the Easter celebrations, and best wishes for a happy break to you all.

Claire x

Events in Europe have shown how powerful the love of one’s home is in people. Whether it be to a home town, region or country, it is an emotion that seems ingrained in most of us. I was born in Fenland and now find myself living just a quarter of a mile from where I grew up, which in some ways is shocking but in other ways quite comforting. A few months ago, as I walked into town, I found myself nonchalantly kicking a conker along the path. I then realised it was from the same horse chestnut tree that I used to gather them from when I was a youngster, a fact that made me both feel old and also surprisingly nostalgic. As I wrote this a strange coincidence occurred… when I googled horse chestnut the fact came up that the tree is the symbol of Kyiv….

April Gardening Tips

ne of the main tasks is planting out potatoes – a rough guide would be: first earlies around late March, second earlies early to mid-April and maincrops mid to late April.

Potatoes need a sunny site away from frost pockets. Dig a trench 12cm (5in) deep and space the tubers 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop, in rows 24in (60cm) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Alternatively, you can grow the potatoes under black polythene, planting the tubers through slits. The big advantage of this method is that there is no need to earth up and the new potatoes form just below soil level which means there is no digging to harvest them, they'll lie just below the sheet. Strawberries can be planted out now. An easy way to propagate strawberries is to plant any runners from the plants (keeping them attached) and put the runner into a plant pot filled with compost - the runner can be held down with a “U” shaped staple or piece of wire. Last chance to sow aubergines, chillies, and tomatoes (under cover) as they require a long growing season to do well. Other crops that can be sown under cover include celeriac, courgettes, squashes, pumpkins, leeks, and marrows. Other jobs for the month include:

THE SHED SHOP

4

• If you have not planted your onion sets then make that one of your first jobs this month. • You might start seeing aphids on your crops now – blast them off with water or spray with a horticultural soft soap. • Beetroot and carrots can be sown directly outside. So can peas, but they are a favourite snack for mice – if these are a problem, sow them indoors and plant the plants outside when they are 15cm tall. • It is very tempting to sow seeds all in one batch; however, they will all need pricking out, thinning, and potting on at the same time. Sow the seeds that have the longest growing season first and stagger the rest. • Plant asparagus crowns by the end of the month. • Do not forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. • Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft. • Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors but wait until the end of the month. • Spring onions, chard, parsnips, spinach and broad beans can be sown into the open ground. Happy gardening!

YOU’LL LOVE THE NEW HERITAGE WALK APP A fun, free app which turns family walks into adventures will come to Fenland later this year with the official launch of Whittlesey’s much anticipated heritage trail. Fenland District Council is adding its new Whittlesey Heritage Walk to the popular mobile phone app, Love Exploring, ready for its launch in spring. Using an interactive map of the town, the app will provide users with a guided tour which reveals historic landmarks and interesting insights into the history and heritage of the town. There will even be dinosaurs popping up in the walk thanks to an augmented reality feature. You just use the app’s map to find them, then view them through your phone’s camera! Cllr Chris Seaton, the council’s portfolio holder responsible for heritage, said: “The Whittlesey Heritage Walk is all about giving people an opportunity to explore and discover more about the town’s heritage, while getting active and enjoying the outdoors. “As well as the guided tour of Whittlesey, there will be a Dinosaur Safari and a treasure hunt game to help youngsters get even more out of their visit.” The route is an updated version of the Whittlesey Town Trail but with highlighted routes to Kings Dyke Nature Reserve, where a new heritage centre is planned for the future, Lattersey Nature Reserve and Whittlesea Railway Station, as well as a scenic riverside walk to the south of the town centre. As well as the app, there will be information boards and wayfinding markers along the trail and a route brochure available online and in print. The Love Exploring app is free to download on your smartphone and tablets and is available on IOS and Android. For more information, visit: www.fenland.gov.uk/WhittleseyHeritageWalk

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR During the past month it has been with pleasure that I have attended two events at Peel House. The first occasion was to honour past chairmen and Mayors of our council with medallions as a small token of gratitude from the community for the service that had been undertaken during their respective terms of office, some as long ago as thirty years or more. Having the opportunity of engaging with councillors of the past from all political parties was indeed an occasion to remember. A fortnight later I attended another ceremony to mark the retirement of Pauline Richards after thirty years of dedicated service to St John Ambulance in Whittlesey. As well as team members and colleagues from throughout the county, senior members of the brigade attended to present Pauline with a series of well-deserved awards in addition to a gift presented on behalf of the town council by myself. As we finally emerge from the threat of COVID and start to resume normal life again after two years of frustration, and for some self-isolation, I would like to inform you this month of some notable dates to enter into your diaries as we look forward to the months ahead. On Easter Monday (April 17th) at 2pm the annual Duck Race resumes from The Bower with all proceeds going to the Mayor's Charities which this year are Whittlesey Sports Association, Community Car Scheme and Sue Ryder Hospice in Peterborough. A thousand ducks have been brought out of hibernation from their Eastrea barn, physically checked and after some necessary substitutions are now in full training. Tickets for the race are available at Peel House now and will be on street sale on the two weekends immediately prior to the race. Busfest takes place in the centre of the town on Sunday, May 15th featuring transport of the past with the opportunity of travelling on various omnibuses between Whittlesey and Ramsey.

To celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Whittlesey Town Council will be staging a family day in the grounds of the Manor Leisure Centre on Bank Holiday Friday, June 3rd with stage entertainment from 2pm. So, bring along your hampers and seating to enjoy the day. After the success of last summer, The Big Bash returns to the Manor Field on Sunday, May 26th with fun and entertainment for the whole family. The highly popular Summer Music Festivals on the Buttercross will feature on Sundays June 19th, July 17th and August 21st, all starting at 2pm. These are just a few of the events planned for the coming summer and in the usual tradition all events are free of entry charges and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at all the events. Until next time… Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council

MAYOR’S BALL RAISES FUNDS FOR CHARITIES The Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr David Mason and his wife the Mayoress Mrs Ann Mason hosted the Mayor's Ball at the Manor Conference Centre. Close to 150 members of the community and visiting mayors from nearby councils enjoyed an evening of food and entertainment. The Mayor thanked all those businesses and individuals who donated prizes and those who purchased raffle tickets or bid at an auction on the night. This year’s good causes are the Whittlesey Sports Association, the Whittlesey Community Car Scheme and Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall and the Mayor announced on the night that his fund will also donate to support Ukrainian families in desperate need.

“Let there be Light!”

Bourne Abbey Church Gets an Electrical Upgrade BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

M

arch has been a very busy month as we, at Alto Electrical, have been working hard on a very special project. If you have been in Bourne Abbey recently, you will be aware that they have been coping with temporary lighting for several years now. This month, we have been replacing the existing system with a new lighting design, which will future-proof the system and allow easy access, should any issue arise. We have liaised with Father Chris and the Parochial Church Council (PCC), finding out exactly what they needed in the church; put some ideas together with the help of a specialist church lighting designer; and presented a 3D video of the design to the PCC, answering any questions they had. This included the life span of the fittings, access to the church, the cable runs … all the expected points of concern.

This exciting project has taken three years to get off the ground. Owing to this eleventh century, Grade 1 listed church being so popular, the diocese was quite rightly concerned that the lighting was going to meet all the objectives it needed to. Alterations were made, in order to gain approval, and now we are thrilled to be working on this prestigious, local project. Regrettably, we have had to keep the church closed, except for thirty minutes per day. This is a safety measure, but by the time this magazine has been delivered we will hopefully have our ‘high access equipment’ out of the church. At this point, the church will then be able to open for an additional two hours (3pm-5pm) until the work has been completed, when normality will resume. The lighting will be finished in good time for the Easter services, so please go along and enjoy them.

SILVER BIRCH FOR PLATINUM JUBILEE Four trees have been planted by Fenland District Council to mark the authority’s support for The Queen’s Green Canopy – a nationwide treeplanting initiative created in tribute to The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

PAULINE CELEBRATES ST JOHN AMBULANCE MILESTONE Long-time servant of St John Ambulance Mrs Pauline Richards was the guest of honour at a special ceremony to celebrate her thirty years with the organisation. Pauline, who has just retired as Unit Manager for Whittlesey, was with family and friends at Peel House where host Cllr David Mason, Mayor of Whittlesey, opened the event followed with Sir John Bridge, Lee Taylor (District Manager of St John Ambulance), and Mark Knight MBE DL making presentations.

THE PATIENT VOICE Following the merger of three GP practices in Eye, Thorney and Whittlesey under the banner of ‘Jenner’, there comes a chance to help shape our medical services. The former Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) for Thorney & Eye and for Whittlesey have been disbanded and a new one covering the three practices is being formed with the support of both doctors and managers, with the first meeting planned for later this spring. Any patients from the three surgeries can join and have as much or little involvement as they like. This could be simply receiving information by email, attending quarterly meetings, signing up to the Facebook page or even joining a committee to help run the PPG. To sign up to get further news of the establishment of the new PPG, go to www.jennerhealthcare.co.uk/ about-us/have-your-say/patient-participationgroup/ or have a word with reception. 16

People across the country – from individuals, groups, schools and communities to civic leaders and larger organisations and businesses – are being encouraged to plant trees as part of the project, just one of a number of national initiatives and events to celebrate Her Majesty’s seventy years on the throne. Fenland District Council Chairman, Cllr Alex Miscandlon planted the four silver birch trees on Friday, March 11th – the seventieth day of the seventieth year since The Queen’s accession in 1952 – at four of the district’s secondary schools, including Whittlesey’s Sir Harry Smith Community College.

COUNCIL PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR UKRAINIAN REFUGEES Fenland District Council has pledged to support Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion. Council leader Cllr Chris Boden wrote to Steve Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgeshire and the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, highlighting the council’s readiness to assist with the Government’s expanded Ukrainian Humanitarian Route. The council is working with voluntary and community organisations in Fenland to identify which agencies are collecting supplies for Ukraine, so it can signpost anyone who wishes to donate items such as clothing, bedding, medical supplies and toiletries. If you’d like to help, the most effective action you can take is to make a financial donation to one of the following charities which are supporting Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. Any amount you can give will go a long way to helping those in need: Save The Children; International Rescue Committee; International Committee of the Red Cross; British Red Cross; Choose Love; British Ukrainian Aid; UNHCR; Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB); and With Ukraine Global Support Fund. BARBARA'S TABLE TENNIS WIN Barbara Hargreaves, who is a keen member of the Whittlesey Table Tennis Club, has won the Under 16 girls’ category of the Cambridgeshire County schools’ championships. She took the title after beating her opponent 3-1 in a five-game match at the event which was organised by Table Tennis England. Barbara, who is coached at WTCC by Peter Hau, David Mucklin, Graham Moores, and Mark Ashworth, said: “I had an amazing time and was incredibly happy when I won the competition, as it showed that my hard work had paid off.”

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE CELEBRATION

St. Andrews Church in Whittlesey is celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee from Thursday, June 2nd to Sunday, June 5th. It is inviting children and organisations to enter a Jubilee garden or display which will be on show in the church over the weekend. Gardens should be in a seed tray with the idea that they will form a carpet when put together. Entry to the church will be free but donations are always welcome and during the weekend craft activities and refreshments will also be available. For further information please contact Sue Taylor. Tel: 07504 668209 or email Suebtaylor@gmail.com

In addition, Tom Cox and Tom Oldaker competed in the under 16s boys’ tournament. Both Toms got to the semi-finals, when they played each other. Tom Oldaker just pipped Tom Cox by two points. Tom Oldaker then went onto the final but lost 3-1 to his opponent but nevertheless, played really well. Fellow members Loschi Jeyanthan and Rebecca Cox also competed for the first time at the championships.

FENLAND PARTNERS JOIN FORCES FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN Frontline agencies across Fenland have been working together to help people spot the signs of abusive relationships. The Fenland Community Safety Partnership (CSP), which brings together organisations including the police, local authorities, and fire service to address community safety concerns, has been working with Refuge, Change Grow Live (CGL) and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Partnership (DASV) to raise awareness of domestic abuse and coercive control. The Domestic Abuse Awareness Campaign has included targeted training for frontline professional and community organisations working for and supporting Fenland residents, and a community awareness campaign to increase confidence in victims and their families to report and seek support. This has included posters and stickers in locations throughout the district, and posts on social media. Get Your Home ‘Springready’ While Avoiding a DIY Drama! By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades The Easter break is traditionally a time when “DIY-ers” and spring-cleaners roll up their sleeves and tackle all manner of jobs around the home. This may include plans to move house or maybe a long-awaited garden makeover. If you are selling your home, then you will want it to look its very best to keep you one step ahead of the competition. Beating the rush means you can start showcasing your property earlier than others, so now is the perfect time to get serious about selling. Alternatively, if a thorough spring clean is on your agenda, then here are our super six tips: 1 Take one room at a time – this way you won’t get overwhelmed by the task and be ruthless with your de-cluttering. Ask yourself, “Does the item make me happy, does it serve a purpose, and when was the last time I used it?” 2 Kitchen: start with the cupboards and then move on to the cutlery drawer (tip: soak teastained teaspoons in a mug of water with a few drops of vinegar), microwave, kettle, and toaster. 3 Bedroom: empty the wardrobe and discard 15:38 anything you haven’t worn in the past year or if it doesn’t fit. Sell good condition clothes and bag up others for charity. 4 Your working area: maintain a clutter-free environment, going through paperwork, refiling, or shredding as you go along. Have a digital de-clutter too. 5 Children’s bedrooms: encourage them to go through their belongings and donate any unwanted items to charity. In return, treat them to some new bed linen or some new funky storage boxes. 6 Keep walls clutter-free! If you have got newly decorated walls, only put back up pictures and photographs that you really want. If you don’t have the time, skill or confidence to give your home the makeover it deserves, then Safe Local Trades can put you in contact with many reputable and reliable professionals to help make your home sparkle this spring. Whether it’s cleaning or de-cluttering, odd jobs around the home, decorating, bringing new life to your upholstery, installing a new kitchen or bathroom, getting the windows professionally cleaned or your garden landscaped – they have tried, tested and reliable tradespeople for the job; however big or small. www.safelocaltrades.com A P R IL 2 0 2 2

new electrician’s business has opened in Whittlesey. KH Electrical can carry out all types of domestic and commercial work.

Owner Kevin Howlett is a fully qualified electrician with nearly thirty years’ experience who has just moved to the area from Northamptonshire. His services include everything from domestic new builds and re-wires to testing and inspection and fault finding. Kevin said that since moving to Whittlesey he has been pleased with how his business has progressed but is looking for more local work. He said: “I am new to the area having moved recently from the Wellingborough area where I have obviously had a lot of customers. Now I’m looking to pick up business around Whittlesey. I am fully qualified and insured and although I do mainly domestic work, I can also carry out commercial work too, any electrical work really.” You can contact KH Electrical on 07447 301432; Email kevhelectrical@gmail.com; www.kevhelectrical.com

Make 2022 A Less Taxing Year This year, make the best use of tax reliefs and allowances to help secure your financial future and the inheritance you leave to your loved ones.

W

ell over a decade since the financial crisis, the world is still a very uncertain place. It is always wrong to believe that market shocks are a thing of the past. From uncertainty over the impact of Brexit to supply chains, and of course COVID-19, there are always many risks that pose a challenge to investors at any given time; and any number of unforeseen factors in the years to come. But these are beyond our control; they cannot be allowed to prevent us from planning our financial futures. Indeed, we will give ourselves the best chance of achieving our financial goals if we focus on what we can control: how and where we invest our money, how much tax we pay, the size of our retirement fund, and how much of our estate passes to our family free of Inheritance Tax (IHT).

ISAs

The ISA allowance to £20,000 is a very welcome method for encouraging individuals to invest for their future. However, as interest rates in the UK are lower than ever, money being held in Cash ISAs is failing to achieve the very basic objective of keeping pace with inflation. Those who are investing their ISA allowance for the long term – in assets offering the scope for

attractive levels of income and capital growth – are giving themselves a better chance of maximising the tax-saving opportunities on offer.

Pensions

Saving into a pension is an even more attractive prospect than it was a few years ago. This is because there is much greater freedom for taking benefits; and pension savings can now be more easily left as part of a tax-free inheritance.

Inheritance Tax

There are a number of exemptions that allow individuals to reduce future bills. Perhaps the best known is the annual gifting allowance, which gives individuals the opportunity to remove £3,000 of assets from their estate immediately (£6,000 if they use the previous year’s allowance as well). Taking steps to reduce your taxable estate by topping up a child’s pension or Junior ISA could go a long way to providing them with an invaluable head start in life. The Junior ISA allowance is £9,000 for the 21/22 tax year. Also, make this year’s £3,000 gifting allowance count – and carry forward last year’s if you haven’t used it already. To receive a complimentary guide covering wealth management, retirement planning or Inheritance Tax planning, contact Marcel A. In Memory Of

REMEMBERING...

Lawrence Smith

L

ocal farmer Lawrence Smith, who was well known in local sporting circles, has passed away at the age of eighty-six.

Lawrence, known to his friends as Lawrie, was a former Fenland Skating Champion and was also a proficient snooker player for Whittlesey Conservatives in the Spalding & District Snooker League. He passed away at Peterborough City Hospital on January 19th following a short illness and a funeral service was held at March Crematorium on February 11th.

Sheena said: “He loved skating and snooker and beat his father to become the local skating champion in the early 1980s. He also won the snooker league’s over fifty-five’s snooker championship in 2000 and played regularly up until about four or five years ago.”

His widow Sheena, of Yarwells Walk, Whittlesey, said: “He was diagnosed with vascular dementia about a year ago but hadn’t really been unwell until just before Christmas last year when he was admitted to hospital.” The couple had been married for fifty-five years and had two children, Caroline and Paul, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Born in Whittlesey, Lawrence left school at fifteen and spent his entire working life on the family farm at Must Farm at Kings Dyke. where he looked after the family’s cattle which he loved. He inherited his love of skating from his father, Fred, who was also a former champion.

Coping with Incontinence BY SARAH CLISS, SENIOR REPORTER, FENLAND CITIZEN

A

s most women of a certain age can testify oops moments are real – that annoying little dribble of wee when you laugh or sneeze gradually creeps up on us all. For some it happens not long after childbirth, for others it’s as the menopause hits and our bodies slowly lose the muscle tone we once had. Adverts on television for products like Tena are now a regular sight, showing women and their bladder weakness is big business. Men also develop issues including needing to pee more often as well as erectile dysfunction. Issues with mesh used in surgery to solve the problem have been well publicised. Posh clinics offer so-called ‘mummy make-overs’, there are pants you can wear that promise to strengthen the pelvic floor, Botox injections into the urethra and more. Suzanne, based here in Fenland, has tried many of the-so-called solutions, now she believes she has found one that works. Suzanne, who has more than thirty years’ experience with aesthetic treatments, said: “I've had bladder weakness since my second child was born over thirty years ago, and it got progressively worse leaving me with both stress and urge incontinence. I was wearing layers of pads because I was so afraid of leaks. You name it I tried it. My GP even referred me for Botox injections in the urethra, which was invasive, painful and didn't work. 36

Incontinence was taking over my life. Then I began worldwide research and I found this chair in America, scientifically backed with Food and Drug Administration approval. Many American urology clinics were using it with 98 percent success rate treating this awful illness. I spoke to many doctors offering the treatments and liked what I was told. The chair works on similar technology to an MRI scanner delivering 11,000 kegels to the pelvic floor using high intensity focused electromagnetic pulses. The treatment triggers the body’s natural process creating new muscle fibre and proteins, which further strengthens the pelvic floor and bladder, giving you back control. The recommendation is for a minimum of six sessions. My problems were dire so I have had twelve and I am a new woman, I have stopped wearing pads, I don’t get up in the night for the loo. I never believed something as simple as sitting on a chair could have such an effect. I have tried it on friends and they have been equally amazed. I wanted to have confidence it would work before offering it out. Think about what it’s like for you now and imagine what it’s going to be like in another ten years. This chair can change all that and re-set your body to what it was like in your twenties." For more information, you can email: freedom.4.you@outlook.com or call 07818 940105. A P R IL 2 0 2 2

SAVING MONEY ON ENERGY By Eamonn Dorling

T

wo ways to reduce the cost of energy are reducing consumption and reducing the tariff.

Reducing consumption Most appliances use electricity; consumption is measured in units (1000 Watts used continuously for an hour). Some appliances use varying amounts of energy depending on what they do. For example, a washing machine uses little to wash clothes once the water is hot enough, during the time it is heating an element will draw much more energy, the spin cycle depends on how fast it spins. For ease of calculation, you can look up the consumption for the machine you use or accept estimated average consumptions. Suppose that a typical washer uses 2.5 units per wash multiply 2.5 times by the price per unit – say 20p for example – the cost for that wash is 50p. Consider how many times per week you use the machine – if you can reduce the number of occasions or reduce the temperature then the cost of laundry will be lower. If you dry the clothes in a tumble dryer or a washer dryer – the same principles apply, except the control is usually how long the dryer is used or how dry you want them to be. Some clothes will dry perfectly well indoors or on a dry day outside for free. A dishwasher CAN wash and dry a full load cheaper than hand washing; it can use more if there are only a few things and the amount of water used for handwashing is kept to a minimum. An electric kettle transfers virtually 100% of heat into the water. A gas kettle might only be 40% efficient (mainly why they take longer to boil). The cost of gas is usually lower than electricity (per kWh), however, the convenience of an

automatic cut off and more comfortable handle temperatures can be worthwhile. Know which appliances use the most energy, a smart meter can help here, and costs nothing to install. Reducing temperatures for space and water heating will save energy, increasing insulation of a property or a hot water tank can also benefit. The tariff Off-peak electricity is still available; the day rate might be more than a single tariff, and the ‘night rate’ a bit less. Some appliances and electric vehicles can be used when the rate is cheapest. Some appliances use energy to maintain temperature (e.g., refrigeration), throughout the night. Most tariffs comprise a charge for each unit PLUS a standing charge for having the energy available, back-up service and administration regardless of the amount you use. Understand your annual and seasonal variations of energy consumption – whatever the fuel. Then use that pattern of consumption with the available options. I am a supporter of off-peak prices because we use appliances with delay timers and our car can accept a charge while we sleep – using no less energy but paying less for it. SUPPORTING THE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE

By Steve Barclay MP

I

t is hard to contemplate the horror people in Ukraine are going through. This is a conflict that is changing by the hour and I’m aware that the fast-moving pace of events means that whatever I write will have changed by the time you read it. However, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the impact it is having around the world, has wide reaching implications – in Europe itself, in other parts of the world where dictators will be watching closely, and domestically where the impacts will be felt strongly in our economy. I know across North East Cambridgeshire there will be feelings of shock and horror at the atrocities being committed by the Putin regime and support for the Ukrainian people as they fight for their country. In Government we have led in providing lethal weapons to help Ukrainians defend themselves, bilateral aid to the Ukrainian Government and neighbouring countries, and medicinal supplies, and will continue to offer support including to those refugees displaced by the war. To return to matters in the constituency, specifically plans for an enormous incinerator in Wisbech, I have now received a letter from the Planning Inspectorate regarding my concerns that developer MVV is not complying with the required consultation process. Following this welcome clarification, I have written to Fenland District Council to urge them to consider their adequacy of consultation response, specifically whether the consultation process was properly informed and meaningful (in accordance with what is known as the Gunning Principles).

a further helpful step and will be part of the Planning Inspectorate’s decision on whether it accepts the application for examination. To avoid a local planning decision and qualify as a nationally significant infrastructure project which is determined by the Planning Inspectorate process, the scheme needs to generate over fifty megawatts of power which will mean bringing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of non-recyclable municipal and commercial and industrial waste to Wisbech. I have other concerns about the impacts on health, traffic, and the environment and will continue to fight against this unsuitable scheme. Congratulations to Littleport’s Field Theatre Group, which has been awarded funding from the National Lottery Community Fund for SisterSafe, a new street safety project to give young female residents tools and information aimed at reducing their risk of harm in public spaces. I applaud any and all efforts to crack down on the harassment of women and girls. Given recent high-profile incidents such as the murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa, it is important that females can feel safe on the streets of our communities. I’ve also been out and about this month on various visits locally, including Wisbech’s Black Cat Residential Property and their new premises in Bridge Street; and to look around the new Silver Green vets in Boleness Road. It’s great to see local businesses created and expanding. Finally, after two years of regular COVID updates in this column, it’s good to see the legal restrictions lifted and our Living with COVID plan published. Of course, the virus has not gone away so I would urge you to continue to take precautions and, above all, stay safe.

Fenland District Council’s view on whether MVV has fulfilled its statutory consultation duties is

WINES FROM THAILAND:

A Good Choice

T

hailand (officially the Kingdom of Thailand, and previously known as Siam) is a country in Southeast Asia, with Bangkok as its capital city.

Today, manufacturing and agriculture are leading parts of Thailand’s economy, alongside countless tourists visiting this fascinating country. From the shopping malls of Bangkok, through the fabulous coastal beaches, with hundreds of tropical islands, plus the nightlife and world heritage attractions, culture, history, sports and more, there is something for all to appreciate and enjoy. Thai cuisine and wines are very popular and can now be found globally. Monsoon Valley is a multiaward-winning fine wine producer. Grapes are carefully selected and transported in air-conditioned vehicles from the Monsoon Valley Vineyard to the Siam Winery. Producing splendid wines, with grapes only grown in Thailand, Monsoon Valley wines are now recognised and enjoyed by numerous connoisseurs, as well as being available in five-star hotels and restaurants in Thailand and around the world. Monsoon Valley White wine has a pleasant bouquet, plus a good mouthfeel and palate, and is excellent with seafood and white meats. The Monsoon Valley Red has good red fruits for 46

the bouquet and for the mouth’s pleasures. This pairs wonderfully with red meats. If it’s a rosé that is preferred, then the Monsoon Valley Rosé will not disappoint, having grapes grown on ‘floating vineyards’ and at the Monsoon Valley Vineyard. This wine has a delicate nose, excellent mouthfeel, and palate. It is a wine that is extremely popular with many people. If a Shiraz is required for satisfaction, then Monsoon Valley Shiraz, from the Premium Range, with its ruby-red, enticing appearance, has it all. Dark fruits are in abundance, with oak-aged barrels contributing to the exceptional pleasures of this wine, and it is fantastic with red meats. For an aromatic, sweet wine, Chenin Blanc Dessert Wine (flagship) ‘ticks all the boxes’ for me. Having Chenin Blanc grapes, left on the vines for several more days, ensures the provision of the added sugars required to produce this impressive delight, which gives a grand finish. These are just some of the wines from the Monsoon Valley ranges. For all details, please visit www.monsoonvalleywine.co.uk and www.siamwinery.com

As always, enjoy!
