Welcome to your July issue... W
ow, what a fabulous, funpacked month that was!
It was really heart-warming the ways in which whole communities came together to share in celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and I’m sure memories of the four-day weekend and all its various activities will live forever in our minds. Some things which a town or a village decide to organise so that everyone in that community can get together don’t just happen – it’s always down to a small number of individuals who selflessly give their time and commitment to ensuring that everything works according to a plan. For all the towns and villages within our “Discovering region”, take a bow all you fixers and shakers, and let’s all move into summer with smiles on our faces, hoping that the weather will enable us all to make the most of our great outdoors.

As I write this, we are in the midst of a mini heatwave. Long sleeved tops and trousers have been consigned to the wardrobe for a few days and bare arms and legs are the order of the day… well at least for the time being. I’ve never been much of one for sunbathing but I do like to pick up a bit of a tan while I’m out shopping or taking my dog for a walk, however there’s one thing that has always puzzled me and also I’m led to believe other people. How come the sun’s rays manage to get to most of one’s body apart from the bit between the knee and the ankle, namely the shin? I’ve seen loads of people walking about looking a healthy shade of brown, but with very pale shins. As for mine, they are currently a very nice shade of off-white…

• Mix the lamb, grated onion and herbs in a bowl with some seasoning, then divide the mix into four and shape into burgers. • When your barbecue is ready to cook on, or your griddle pan is hot, rub the burgers with oil, and cook for five to six minutes on each side, or until cooked through. • Meanwhile, mix the mayonnaise and beetroot with some seasoning. Fill the bread rolls with some watercress, a burger, a dollop of beetroot mayo and a few onion slices. Serve immediately.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee with us!
T
he days are getting longer and the sun is shining just a little bit more – it must be summer. Summer is our favourite time of year here at Harvest Barn and our calendar is jam packed full of events, new produce and more.
We’re busy starting building work on our new event shed. The large, metal barn will soon be the place to be for our big events, now all year round, as well as farmers’ markets, craft fairs, antiques fairs and for private hire too! We’re working hard on our big summer event, the Great Big British Summer Time Fun Fest! We’ll have food trucks, face painting, huge inflatables, live birds of prey displays, open farm style paddocks, live music, balloon modelling, craft fayre and so much more. Keep an eye on our social media for more information about our big August event as it comes!
Our head chef Simon is busy working hard on designing some delicious new summer specials; from super food salads, to massive dirty burgers, there’ll be something for everyone! Natasha of Bake Me Sweet will continue to provide us with naughty and tempting brownies, cookies and bakes, with new summer lemon, Jammie Dodger and Biscoff flavours! Now the sun is shining, our farm walks can now resume. Take a stroll around our 250-acre farm, learning all about the farm, what we grow and the wildlife that resides at Whitehall Farm. You can find more information in store for upcoming dates and tickets. You can join us every first and last Sunday of the month for our on-field car boot too. Come along and either sell or browse – sellers prices start at £7/ car. Buyers are free. All information is available on our website – www.harvestbarn.co.uk
Summer is the perfect time to shop locally – our farm shop will be crammed with all sorts of seasonal food and goodies from our wonderful local suppliers. English strawberries, fresh peaches, cherries, home grown lettuce and pea pods are just some of the delicious summer fruits and vegetables available. Our butchery partner, Grasmere Farm, will be providing us with the best BBQ meats and packs you can think of – Mini BBQ Packs, British lamb kebabs, handmade burgers, banging bangers among other things.

BREWING TODAY: ROUND CORNER BREWING COMPANY
M
ulti award-winning Round Corner Brewing Company in Melton Mowbray produces beers of unmistakable character.
Indeed, their logo states “Uncommonly Good Beer”. The beers are inspired by, and pay respect to, the hugely popular and very much thriving agricultural town and surrounding area. Certainly, the standards of Round Corner Brewing are very high – the numerous awards they keep gaining are testament to that! Melton Mowbray, plus the surrounding area, is recognised and renowned for locally made Stilton cheese and pork pies. The market in Melton Mowbray has a long history. Food/drink events take place each year and attract vast amounts of visitors. The Round Corner Brewing Company has more than twenty years of knowledge and experience, inputted by head brewer and co-founder, Colin Paige. Combie Cryan is also co-founder and, with their committed, dedicated team, they produce beers to an exceptional standard, which have something for all tastes and palates; numerous lovers of their beers have become devotees to the brand. Frisby (4.2% vol). This very popular lager has its maturation period extended, plus, with Fuggles hops, it then produces a most pleasant aroma and drinking taste. Drovers (4,3% vol) is described as a ‘Session IPA’. This hazy, Vermont beer is dry-hopped and uses Lemondrop, Mandarina Bavaria, Citra, Mosaic and Motueka hops very well. Steeplechase (4.4% vol) is a classic pale ale, utilising English barley malts to great advantage. New Zealand and US hops combine, for this very popular beer. Gunmetal (4.8% vol) I would describe as a ‘Black Lager’. The dark brown appearance entices to the aroma and then on to the mouth’s pleasures. It’s biscuity, malty, and smooth. Reverend Hooker (5.5% vol). This Irish stout is a further, hugely popular production. The mouthfeel and palate’s smooth experience do not disappoint. Hopping Spree (6.6% vol). This West Coast IPA is a golden delight. The ABV is raised, so that the full potential of this beer comes to recognition – splendid! For all details of the full range of beers, plus latest news, tours, and tastings, please make contact or visit the website. The first bench marking seventy years since Her Majesty’s accession to the throne was installed in St Peter and St Paul’s Church gardens in Chatteris and further ones will follow over the next few weeks including one at the Garden of Rest in Whittlesey. Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Adding these beautiful pieces of street furniture in each of our towns is a great way to honour The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. I hope that they will be used and enjoyed for many years to come.” Photo: Fenland District Council chairman Cllr Alex Miscandlon (left) and portfolio holder for the environment Cllr Peter Murphy are pictured with the first of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee benches

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR As some you will know, at the Whittlesey Town Council annual meeting I was re-elected as Mayor and leader for the ensuing year which will be my fifth year in office in total. I am always fully conscious of the responsibilities entrusted to me and continue to regard the appointment as a great honour and privilege to be able to serve the local community in this role. My Deputy Mayor is Cllr Dr Haq Nawaz who has already stood in for me on more than one occasion when I have been engaged elsewhere. At the annual meeting it was my pleasure to present cheques to my chosen charities for the year. Whittlesey Sports Association, Sue Ryder Hospice at Thorpe Hall and the Whittlesey Community Car Scheme each received £1000. This was in addition to £1000 donated to the British Red Cross Ukrainian Relief Fund earlier in the year.
the A605 regularly I am conscious of the anticipated greater flow of traffic on this particular section of road into Whittlesey town centre. This will be compounded with increased activity at Saxon Pit and I would like to reassure residents that Whittlesey Town Council will continue to liaise with Cambridgeshire County Council’s Highways Department to ensure that correct procedures are being followed by users of Saxon Pit in their use of the A605. Similarly, Whittlesey Town Council are continuing to press Fenland District Council over environmental issues surrounding operations at Saxon Pit and I have communicated with the site agent to highlight residents’ concerns and he reassures me that correct procedures will be adhered to. Enjoy the summer everyone… Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council
My grateful thanks go to everyone who contributed to my charities during the past year and I now look forward to supporting during the coming year The Phoenix Youth Group, Age UK Handy Man Service and The Good Company, a new organisation that supports carers and those they care for including those with memory problems and dementia. The coming year promises to be a challenging one for all of us with the present escalating cost of living and I would ask that you spare a thought for Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid who are already under increasing pressure to support families in the town and villages. Regular donations of cash can be set up by a standing order through your bank and I would be happy to give details to anyone who feels they can help in this way. I am very grateful for the continued support of the four Coops in Whittlesey who provide receptacles for food to be donated along with regular supplies of food from Aldi, Morrisons and Marks & Spencer. Later in the year the long-awaited bridge over the railway at Kings Dyke will be open to the public. Whilst this will be a great relief to many who use

GOOD COMPANY RESPITE SESSIONS ARE A HUGE SUCCESS!
I
t’s been more than two months since Alison and Suzy started the well-being respite activity sessions at Peel House.
They have had lots of enquiries and now have a small group meeting each month. Each session is designed for those who attend the group. So far, the group has enjoyed chairbased exercise, designed a gardening project, arts and crafts, quizzes, music therapy and much more. At each session the group has enjoyed food from the local restaurants and takeaways that are based in Whittlesey. Our thanks go out to Vesuvio, The Royal Fish Bar, and The Muffin Oven, and of course we can always rely on Lucy from Lucy’s Flowers who kindly provides us with a wonderful fruit basket every month. Over the past couple of months, we have had visits from our local Mayor David Mason, Jack from How Are You Fenland and Rob Windle from Fenland Youth Radio. Our sessions run on the second Thursday of every month from Peel House, Queen Street, Whittlesey and because of the group’s success, Alison and Suzy are excited to announce that they will be starting more respite sessions in other local areas.
Suzy said: "We cannot tell you how hard we have worked to get as far as we have in this short space of time, we are so proud of ourselves and what we have achieved so far!" Alison and Suzy are overwhelmed with the amount of support they have received since the respite sessions started. A big thank you goes out to Jack from How Are You Fenland, the lovely Karen Mucklin for providing chair-based exercise, Charlie Chittenden from the Jenner Health Centre, Cllr Jason Mockett for his time and patience and special thanks to local Mayor David Mason who has chosen the group as one of his organisations that he will support next year! It will always be the Good Company’s passion to help those who need support. Alison and Suzy believe that it’s so important that everyone caring for another person should have the opportunity for respite. Good Company understand that it is all about gaining confidence and rapport with those they have the pleasure of supporting so if you would like to have a chat and find out about what they do, please contact them: Alison on 07930 477233 or via email at alison. goodcompany@gmail.com; Suzy on 07884 202128 or via email at suzy.goodcompany@gmail.com
Those attending the session and the carers said to Alison and Suzy: ‘I enjoy coming because I like Alison and Suzy’ ‘A happy, caring atmosphere with excellent staff’ ‘Good Company has changed our lives for the better, helping us both to have a little bit more independence’ ‘Good Company has lifted the weight off my shoulders, knowing I can go out for a few hours and not get stressed and worry about my husband’ 12

Health
Do you suffer from discoloured or unsightly toenails?
A
re you going on holiday or to a summer event and can't bear to get your feet out? We can help you!
‘Toenail reconstruction’ is a cosmetic or medical procedure performed by a podiatrist. A specialist gel is layered either directly onto the nail or nail bed if no nail is present due to trauma or surgery. This procedure creates a brand-new nail or covers unsightly or misshapen nails so that the nail is more aesthetically pleasing. This is a brilliant way to cover up damaged or unsightly nails so you can show off your feet without embarrassment, however this is not a permanent solution. The length of time that the nail reconstruction lasts will vary from person to person. The new nail will generally last between four and six weeks but can last longer depending on how much of the nail is damaged; after this time the reconstructed nail is removed and reapplied.
The treatment is provided during a straightforward procedure that involves the podiatrist reducing the nail and removing as much of the diseased nail as possible. The toenail is cleaned to remove oil and disinfected, then a solution containing an anti-fungal is applied to the nail plate or nail bed to enhance the bonding of the gel. The podiatrist will then apply the gel in layers, with each layer being hardened under a UV light. As soon as the desired look and thickness has been achieved the nail is then filed and buffed smooth, with a high gloss layer applied if required. After the procedure, a reconstructed toenail may be treated in exactly the same way as you would treat a normal nail, this means that you can also apply nail varnish and use a nail varnish remover. This is a great way to help your feet look wonderful this summer. Contact us to see if this treatment could be suitable for you.

Walking your way to a healthier lifestyle!
H
ere at Active Fenland, we always love to see members of the community living healthier lifestyles. As we age it becomes more crucial that we remain active every day – helping to reduce the risk of heart disease, falls, stroke, dementia, and osteoarthritis – to name a few examples.
Walking is a fantastic – and seriously underrated – form of physical activity (so long as it is at a pace which increases your heart rate, breathing rate, and body temperature). The benefits are endless; alongside the physical benefits, you also reap the positive mental effects of being outside in nature, as well as the social benefits of walking with friends! We have recently launched the Ramblers Wellbeing Walks scheme here in Fenland, and we are

continuously looking for committed individuals with a passion for walking (or wanting to walk more) and strong people skills, to become walk leader volunteers and lead walks around Whittlesey (and the rest of Fenland). If this sounds like something you could do, please contact us using the details at the bottom – we would love to see more walk leaders leading with pride across Fenland. Walking Netball is also a great way to get walking, particularly if you’re looking to avoid the English weather and stay indoors. A slower, lower impact version of the classic sport – with our fantastic coach leading a warm-up, drills, and games! Taking place at the Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Complex, Wednesdays 9.30am-10.30am (£2 upon arrival). Contact activefenlandbookings@fenland.gov.uk or 07874 893316 to find out more about any of our sessions or to register interest.

The Magic of Music
[ by Lucy Briggs ]
Music is such a huge part of my daily routine, that I often take for granted how much it helps my mental health.
I
listen to it as I get ready. I listen to it as I work (currently playing: Kate Bush – ‘Running Up That Hill’). I never leave the house without my headphones, and I have spent countless weekends in muddy fields, or evenings in sweaty venues, singing along as I watch my favourite acts play live.
But how can enjoying music help our mental health?
1
Lyrics. I find that most of my favourite songs have words that I can identify with that give me strength, and don’t make me feel so alone. If you have trouble hearing them, a simple Google search will bring up the lyrics to any songs. Spotify now even has a ‘Lyrics’ function!
2
Bringing enjoyment to mundane tasks. I absolutely hate housework. But if I pop on an energising playlist, that all changes! Think Freddie Mercury hoovering in the Queen video for ‘I Want To Break Free’. Allow yourself to dance and make your chores more fun. I promise you; it will zoom right by!
60 18
D I S C O V E R I N G

3
Dancing! Move your body to the music, in whatever way you can. It is a well-recognised fact that exercise boosts endorphins, which make us happy. It doesn’t matter if you can’t dance well; feeling the rhythm is all that matters. As those home décor posters say, ‘Dance like no one’s watching’!
4
Singing. You don’t have to be the next Adele to sing along to a song. Get in the shower, go for a drive, and sing your heart out. Did you know that singing reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and helps to lower your heart rate? Last week, I attended a fabulous new group in Bourne called ‘Find A Voice’, which is a choir for mental health sufferers. The group will meet every Tuesday evening at 7pm in the Butterfield Centre, and is run by a wonderfully welcoming woman called Emma. I had the time of my life, and I highly suggest you check out ‘Find A Voice Choir’ on Facebook for more details. Until next time, take care of yourselves.

Cannon & Co
Is Moving With The Times
T
ania Cannon established the ground-breaking Whittlesey estate agency Cannon & Co a mere year ago, and it is already a thriving, and booming, independent business. Tania grew up in Whittlesey, and still lives in the local area. Her passion for the ‘village feel’ of the town, and the people who live here, has driven her to re-think estate agencies as we know them.
The personal and tailored approach of Cannon & Co is what sets them apart from other agencies. Tania truly cares about her customers. Learning from her experiences of purchasing and selling properties of her own, she saw a chance to challenge how things are done, and to fill the gap in the market, bringing in a much more personalised approach to buying, selling, and letting properties. Tania’s knowledge of the Whittlesey area is impeccable. Pairing that with her previous job as a systems trainer for social care workers, she has produced an amazing system, which streamlines the whole process of buying, selling, or letting a property. Tania and her team understand that moving house is a huge decision. They are firmly on your side and want to find the place that is right for you. Tania values honesty and integrity above all else and is proud to have a team that reflects these
values. She says: “I carefully pick the right people to ensure I can continue to drive the business forward, reviewing, and making improvements.” Cannon & Co understands that life isn’t 9-5, so it’s willing to work around your lifestyle, opening from 6am to 10pm daily. Tania believes that people shouldn’t have to ‘muddle through’ such a huge process, and that it really needs nurturing’. She is there to support you, and keep you up-to-date, every step of the way. “My phone barely rings,” Tania says, “because everyone is already up-todate, and knows exactly what’s going on.” Moving with the times, Cannon & Co is the future of estate agents, with tons of positive reviews, and thousands of followers. You can find weekly property updates, and videos from Tania herself, on the Cannon & Co Facebook page.

Your Garden
J
SPONSORED BY THE SHED SHOP uly can be a very dry month and, if it is hot, the soil temperature rises and many crops, such as broccoli, fennel, lettuce, and cabbage can bolt and render them inedible.
To help prevent this happening, keep them well watered (reducing the soil temperature) or use a mulch. Watering is so important, and it is better to water crops frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form and skins splitting. It is time to lift garlic: hang bulbs out in the sun or in an airy shed. Onions also need drying well before they are stored: a few days before harvesting, loosen the soil around the roots, and choose a dry day to lift them and lay them on the ground in the sun. Do not be tempted to store them until they are thoroughly dry. Also, first and second early potatoes can be lifted; they don’t store well, so enjoy them straightaway.
Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted: • Lettuce, rocket, and a variety of salad leaves – succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn. • Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot, and carrots. • Florence fennel. • Plant out your leeks. Just dib a hole about 150mm/6″ deep and drop the leek into the

hole. Water it in and the job’s done! You do not need to fill the holes with soil; enough will wash in with watering and rain. • Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic, and early potatoes. Other jobs to do: • Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition, so try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed. Also check the potato plants and earth-up, if necessary, to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light. • When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip. • Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants. • Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertilizer or an organic liquid feed. • Nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes; they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. Water them with a liquid feed as soon as the first fruits are formed. Likewise for peppers. • Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons. • Plant potatoes ready for Christmas; garden centres usually stock the winter varieties.

We have moved to Saxon Service Station – Peterborough Road
‘Agim’s Hand Car Wash’
Agim and his partner Kate established ‘Agim’s Hand Car Wash’ at the start of this year. Operating at Saxon Garage on Peterborough Road, what they pride above all else is attention to detail.
T
he business is family run, with Agim’s nephew working alongside the couple, and their experience is second to none. Looking for a new adventure in early 2020, Agim and Kate moved from Margate to Whittlesey. With the following lockdowns, it could have been a very lonely time for them, but the friendly, supportive community made Whittlesey feel like home for them, and they absolutely love living here. Agim has lifelong experience of car washing, with other members of his family running car wash businesses. His previous job in Margate was to valet the ambulances of Kent, and Kate has recently left her job as a secondary school teacher to focus on the family business. They both pride themselves on attention to detail, and doing a thorough and professional job. They have found many friends through their car washing experience in Whittlesey, and the whole team love chatting to the customers, offering a friendly experience. Since opening in January, the site has been renovated to create more space. By taking down

one of the barriers, the previous height restriction has been lifted, meaning that Agim’s Hand Car Wash can now accommodate vehicles of any size. Using high quality products, the pricing structure is reasonable and based on size of vehicle. Agim and Kate have exciting ideas for the future, including extending the site, installing a card machine, investing in a foam machine for cleaning, and creating a sheltered area for customers to sit while they wait.
The ‘Agim’s Hand Car Wash’ loyalty card offers £5 off on your sixth stamp, so pop down to Saxon Garage to grab yours and check the full price list. Open 8am to 6:30pm 7 days a week, Agim and Kate both look forward to welcoming you! JULY 2022

WITH ENERGY BILLS ROCKETING, HOW CAN YOU KEEP COSTS DOWN? Making your home warmer has never been more important. With Access4Lofts, it’s never been easier or more affordable either! According to the Energy Saving Trust, as much as twenty-five percent of the heat in your home is lost through your loft or roof space. Not only does that mean you’re getting bigger bills than you should be, you’re also contributing much more than you need to towards greenhouse gases and your carbon footprint. While Access4Lofts specialises in supplying and installing loft ladders, hatches and boarding, we also offer loft insulation that could reduce this heat loss by as much as 20%. That’s going to mean not just a significant saving on your energy bills, but also a big step in the right direction when it comes to your household’s impact on climate change. Access4Lofts is fully committed to providing you with loft insulation that is not only practical
and affordable, but also meets the very highest environmental standards. All insulation installs comply with the National Insulation Association (NIA) recommended standard depths of insulation. So, how much does insulating your loft cost? It could be cheaper than you think! You’ll more than make that money back in what you save on your bills. While exact costs obviously vary from house to house, the typical price for insulating your loft in a detached house is around £395, and you can expect annual savings of around £225 on your heating bills. That’s not just for one year either – that’s year on year for the lifetime of the product. Interested in finding out more about how loft insulation could work in your home? Call now for a FREE quotation on 01733 663207.
Household and utilities bills are rocketing, so now is the time to consider insulation as the answer to inflation! According to the Energy Saving Trust in an uninsulated home up to 25% of heat is lost through the roof space! We can supply and install insulation to save your pocket and the planet – and you’ll be surprised how cost-effective our solutions are.
• No waiting around. We arrive on time, every time • Lifetime guarantee • Reliable, local company working in your home • Extra confidence because we are accredited by Which? Trusted Traders • Absolutely no mess and no fuss.

WHAT TO DO WHEN INVESTMENTS FALL IN VALUE By Eamonn Dorling
The following two quotes* are interesting: Looking at data going back to 1930, the firm found that if an investor missed the S&P 500′s ten best days each decade, the total return would stand at 28 percent. If, on the other hand, the investor held steady through the ups and downs, the return would have been 17,715%.
W
e have been here before; international stock markets have struggled in 2022. Consequently, investment returns have been lower than expected.
The first thing to figure out is why? Among the reasons are the various speeds of recovery from COVID and which areas of the world are still entrenched in the problem and still operating lockdowns. Some of these will create a slowdown in their economy for much longer. The cost of reacting sooner needs to be paid for. Inflation was high, then was added to by higher energy costs attributed to the Ukrainian war and the prospect of greater inflation on food that is usually imported from that region. There is the risk that greater expense will result from the loss of a European peace dividend that had developed after the Second World War. As Winston Churchill said: “The longer you look back, the further you can look forward”. Internationally, specialist analysts have monitored falls and recoveries in stock markets. Most observations offer similar results, basically, a fall will be followed by a recovery. Each recovery can be predicted, the problem is nobody knows exactly when it will happen.
“Remaining invested during turbulent times can help recover losses following bear markets.” My view is that a temporary fall in value is ‘only a paper loss’ until one exits the investment. If all or part of the funds is removed – there is less to benefit from a recovery. Indeed, some would say that a falling market is an opportunity. ‘Timing the Market’ is very different from the similarly sounding ‘Time in the Market.’ Timescales are very important because a short-term investment strategy is different from a medium-term and this differs from the long term. If you are seeking advice on investment or pension fund options, speak with an independent financial adviser. *https://blog.validea.com/why-investors-shouldnever-try-to-time-the-stock-market/#:~:text=Savita%20 Subramanian%2C%20BofA's%20head%20of,losses%20 after%20a%20bear%20market.%E2%80%9D Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Burglary Prevention Advice to Avoid Summer Holiday Heartache By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Whether you’ve booked a week or two in the sun or have planned a short family break, don’t forget to add home security and property protection to your checklist. We can all greatly reduce the risk of burglary by taking a few simple security measures to help make our home less attractive to thieves. Before you go on holiday: • Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark. • Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media. • Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away. • Ensure all windows and doors, gates, garages, and sheds are locked. • Keep items that could be used to break into your property such as ladders, tools and wheelie bins stored safely away. • Store valuable documents or items in a safe or leave them with a family member, friend, or a bank. • Make sure valuable items such as laptops, games consoles etc., are not on view from the outside. 15:38 • Make sure you have up-to-date building and contents insurance. While you're away: • Get a relative, friend or neighbour to park on your drive if you have one, open and close the curtains, collect post from the mat and water the garden. • Be mindful of what you post on social media which could identify you as being away on holiday. Prevention is always better than cure, and now is a great time to install or upgrade any CCTV security/ lighting or alarm systems – or even change the locks. Don’t overlook your garden. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond... and even newly-laid turf! You could: • Secure all gates and sheds and install some sensory outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • Flimsy, broken fence panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • Use a security pen to mark items, like garden furniture, ornaments, or trampolines, with your postcode. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group. Find your nearest group at www.ourwatch.org.uk JULY 2022

“Go LED” - If you have not done this yet, it’s time to start now. I am still surprised when I go to houses to find halogen fittings still in use. Change them straightaway; these get so hot that they are a fire risk, and they are not manufactured any more for this very reason.
If your excuse for not doing this is that you want to wait until the fittings have expired, don’t wait. The sooner you change them, the quicker you’ll notice the difference in your bank balance (plus, you don’t want the additional heat in summer!)
Use timers. You can get these cheaply and, if you are ‘tech savvy’, you can get plug-in devices that you can control by “Alexa”, or other similar product. These can be automated, and even voice and movementcontrolled. You can let your imagination run wild!
4 5 6
Is your boiler programmed properly? Don’t just keep it on all the time; be smart and make it work for you. Make sure it has a thermostat, and that it’s positioned correctly. Are fixed items like towel rails/electric heaters and tanks on timers? Get them installed, and this will save you so much money!
Are you throwing money away? Make sure your appliances are energy efficient. If you have electric heating that’s been in a long time, it’s likely that upgrading the system will save you a small fortune. Modern heaters are so energy efficient now, and much more convenient than storage heaters.
7
Do you have any electrical faults? If you’re not sure, don’t just sit on it. The electrical regulations recommend an ‘Electrical Report’ every five years, or at change of occupancy. If you’ve not had one, get it booked in now. Identifying and fixing faults can stop unnecessary costs. If you are not sure how to go about implementing this advice, you can book in via bookings.altoelectical.co.uk for a visit and we can help. All advice is complimentary, and, for any electrical services, we will provide a quote for your consideration.

SO MUCH TO CELEBRATE By Steve Barclay MP
W
hat an absolutely amazing Jubilee celebration! The atmosphere, both here in the constituency and in London, was so full of warmth and goodwill, it felt as though there was a sense of happiness and contentment everywhere. Marking a Platinum Jubilee is a once in a lifetime event and many took their opportunity to enjoy it to the full. The Queen’s seventy years of service are inspiring and it is hard to find parallels to her dedication and commitment. I hope she enjoyed it as much as we did. Alongside Roads Minister, Baroness Vere, I was delighted to officially open the £17million A47 Guyhirn junction. Work to increase the size of the roundabout by creating two lanes on all approaches and widen the existing carriageway on the River Nene Bridge – now renamed the Tiddy Mun Bridge after the legendary bog spirit who was believed to control the waters and mists of the Fens – is complete. More than twenty thousand vehicles regularly use this junction and the short-term pain of roadworks during the last year will be offset by the reduced congestion and faster journeys that these improvements bring. It’s also brilliant to see yet another milestone passed as the £32 million Kings Dyke crossing scheme in Whittlesey continues. The embankment has been completed between the underpass and the railway bridge, alongside Star Pit, and commuters are now permanently using the new roundabout at the western end, opposite Funthams Lane. The pre-cast concrete parapets that extend out from the railway bridge and act as a safety barrier are in position and works are continuing. I also joined the official opening of the upgraded March railway station which shows the benefits of further government investment in the form of £1.6 million of funding which has enabled March station to have a fantastic upgrade alongside a new car park.
When I was first elected some said to me we were the forgotten Fens. These transport investments in March, Whittlesey and Wisbech, are good practical examples of the Government’s commitment to levelling up. Another fabulous example of what the Government means by levelling up is the £3.2 million new state-of-the-art skills centre nearing completion in Chatteris. Hosted on the Metalcraft site, it will enable a significant expansion in the number of apprenticeships offered by Metalcraft, who have a long-standing high reputation for skills training. It will also enable a wide range of other training courses benefitting people in Chatteris and across North East Cambridgeshire. This is great news for local jobs and will help businesses win new contracts if they have the skilled workforce to deliver them. Finally, thanks to store manager Peter Lonsdale and the team at Tesco in Chatteris for their £500 donation to my annual Read to Succeed campaign. Each year we aim to raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. The theme this year, in association with the Summer Reading Challenge in libraries, is Gadgeteers – encouraging children to discover the amazing science and innovation behind the world around us.
Officially opening the new A47 Guyhirn junction with Roads Minister, Baroness Vere

FESTIVAL NEEDS YOU After a break of three years due to COVID, the Whittlesey Festival will be back in September next year. It takes many months of planning so the Festival Steering Committee, who are Isabel Edgington, Brian Smithyman, Jenny Parker, Marija Lysak and Averil Cosstick, are already preparing in advance.
W
e also have an existing group of great volunteers (Whittlesey Festival Partners) whose support has been absolutely amazing over the years, but we do need extra people to join us. Whether you’re an individual, business, group, or organisation we would love to see you at our Festival Open Evening on Thursday, September 1st, 2022, 6pm8pm at Peel House, 8 Queen Street, Whittlesey PE7 1AY. You will find a leaflet about the event enclosed in this issue of Discovering Whittlesea.
marketsandevents@fenland.gov.uk or by calling Jenny Parker on 07436 269616. We look forward to seeing you. Marija Lysak, on behalf of the Whittlesey Festival Steering Committee
At the Open Evening you’ll be able to view a celebration of the Whittlesey Festival through the years and find out how you can get involved. There is a wide range of volunteer roles available, such as stewarding, bookkeeping, social media, and many more opportunities. The session is ‘drop in style’ in case you aren’t able to stay the whole time. A buffet will be available, and you’d be most welcome to chat with us and ask questions in a relaxed environment. In previous years, the Whittlesey Festival has been a fun filled day for all the family, attracting about five thousand visitors from far and wide and we are really looking forward to making it happen again. To help us with the arrangements for the Open Evening and ordering of refreshments please let us know if you plan to attend by emailing

SPECIAL DAY AT COATES PRIMARY SCHOOL
Gasps of surprise met an Engagement Team from Royal Air Force Wittering as they arrived at Coates Primary School near Whittlesey for a special STEM visit. Beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures greeted the team of STEM Ambassadors led by Warrant Officer Emma Hanson, as they took Years Five and Six pupils through demonstrations of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Structural engineering and aerodynamics were the themes as the pupils constructed bridges and designed wings for air propelled rockets. Coates Primary School is the heart of the village and a school has stood on the site for over a century. Today Coates Primary School educates around 190 pupils aged between four and eleven, and has a pre-school which accepts children from as young as two years old.
exercises, collectively known as the A4 Force Elements. The Station is also home to a contingent of RAF Police from No 7 Force Protection Squadron. Coates Primary School has a strong service ethos, it’s motto; ‘Reach for the stars, be the best that we can be’ echoes the mottos of the RAF and the Army. STEM learning is a priority for the UK, and the dynamic RAF Wittering Engagement Team made the morning educational and fun for students and teachers.
The pupils responded with obvious energy to the STEM sessions, enthusiastically building bridges and designing rocket wings with real imagination. Sgt Daz Rivers said: “Today’s been a pleasure, you can see straightaway that the students are really enjoying the STEM activities, experimenting and learning something new.” No 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron (2MT) and the Royal Air Force Police brought their own special vehicles to the school. The playground echoed to the sounds of a gigantic Oshkosh truck and the sirens of a custody vehicle. Pupils could barely contain their excitement as they were allowed to climb into the cabs and take a moment behind the wheel. In addition to its flying units, RAF Wittering is home to the specialist engineering and logistics squadrons that support RAF air operations and 50

A Year Five pupil said, “This morning really was amazing. In our activities we made bridges and planes which we flew. It was super cool when we got to explore the police van and the Oshkosh!! They even showed us the engine! Thank you for this.” Mrs Lindsey Boucher is the Head Teacher of Coates Primary School. She said: “Thank you so much RAF JULY 2022
Whilst at Park Lane, children performed ‘flash mob’ dances, dressed up in red, white and blue (with a few princesses and princes too) to have an afternoon of Union Jacks, party games and ice creams! Since the pandemic, schools have been doing their very best to help children ‘catch-up’ in English and Mathematics – it’s great to see New Road and Park Lane helping the children to ‘catch-up’ with making the happiest of childhood memories. Wittering, it’s been a fantastic morning! Our older years have had such an education with the STEM Team, who have made learning incredibly fun, and 2MT and the RAF Police have given the whole school an insight into the RAF. Brilliant!” Wing Commander Maggie Boyle is the Acting Station Commander at RAF Wittering. She said: “Our Engagement Team does a great job in developing an interest in STEM and showing students that Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths are accessible and achievable for all. And it was fabulous to see how much the pupils enjoyed meeting personnel from 2MT Squadron and our RAF Police Flight, thanks to them all.” Photos courtesy of SAC Kimberley Waterson
SUMMER FUN AT NEW ROAD AND PARK LANE
Pupils at both New Road and Park Lane schools have been having a great summer so far. The sports days were huge successes with toddler races, parent races and even a mobility scooter race at Park Lane which made many happy memories for the whole community. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee provided the perfect opportunity to dress up and party! New Road school held its very own street party with Molly dancing and even a visit from ‘The Queen’ (thank you Mrs Whitehand). JULY 2022

THE DINOSAURS ARE COMING TO PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL Yes, it’s true, animatronic dinosaurs from the Natural History Museum in London are coming to Peterborough Cathedral during the school summer holidays!
F
rom July 18th until September 3rd, 2022, the Cathedral is hosting the touring exhibition “T. Rex: The Killer Question”. The display includes roaring and moving animatronic dinosaurs – a three-quarter size T. Rex amongst them – as well as dinosaur scenes, a twelve-metre-long static T. Rex, and a life-size T. Rex skeleton. Imagine seeing these models in the huge space of the Cathedral! The exhibition tackles the monster mystery: Was T. Rex a ferocious hunter or a mere scavenger? Visitors are invited to take a closer look at this dinosaur – its size, the power in its legs, the length of its arms, the sharpness of its teeth and its keen sense of smell. Was it best suited to catching and slaughtering live prey or to stealing carcasses? See the exhibition and make up your own mind. Tickets to see “T. Rex: The Killer Question” are on sale now. They are £6 for children (age 3 -16 years), £8 for adults or £25 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children or 1 adult and up to 4 children). They are on sale via www.peterborough-cathedral. org.uk/t.rex. For updates and offers related to the exhibition, you can join ‘Team T. Rex’ free by e-mailing t.rex@peterborough-cathedral.org.uk.

JUBILEE SEAT BRINGS HISTORY BACK TO LIFE Volunteers and residents have brought a piece of village history back to life as part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. A Jubilee tree seat has been installed around the Oak tree on the corner of Benwick’s High Street and Doddington Road, thanks to Benwick In Bloom and local residents Arthur Clapham, Janet Fountain and Adam Keppel-Green.
Photo: Members of Benwick In Bloom celebrate the new Jubilee tree seat, with (from right) Cllr Alex Miscandlon, Fenland District Council chairman and ward member for Benwick, Coates and Eastrea, Cllr Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council portfolio holder for the environment, and Cllr Bob Wicks, ward member for Benwick, Coates and Eastrea
In 1911, an Oak tree was planted to celebrate the coronation of King George V and a seat was installed around the tree some years later. However, it is believed the tree and seat were burned and destroyed during VE celebrations in 1945. Years later in 1983, Benwick resident Charlie Burbridge, who lived on Chapel Farm, left money in his will for three Oak trees to be planted in the village. Now, a replacement tree seat made from 100 percent recycled materials has been installed around the tree once again. The seat has been funded by Benwick In Bloom, along with donations from Arthur Clapham, whose father Harry Clapham was the Benwick butcher for many years, and Janet Fountain and Adam Kepler, who donated the remaining profits from the sale of their book ‘Benwick Bygones’, published in 2008. Chairman of Benwick in Bloom Jill Hindle added: “Benwick in Bloom Street Pride volunteer group was founded in 2012 with the aim of cleaning, tidying, and planting up the village, working with and for the community. This includes promoting local history and things of interest, and the Jubilee tree seat is a wonderful example of this. “We have blossomed out over the years with more volunteers and will continue to do our best to make Benwick a better and more interesting place to live.” JULY 2022
