Do you have kids that kick the back of your seats or dogs that love to leave their muddy paw prints on the seats? Then a mini valet is what you need. We use high quality products to wipe and dust down the seats, back of seats and door plastics to remove those annoying scuff marks left by shoes. Mini valets are particularly popular with lighter colour leather interiors, due to discolouration caused by dye from clothing. By using a soft brush we can spruce up the interior making the car look like new again. 2

Welcome to your August issue...
I
t’s August, which means only one thing for many of our readers – another school year is over, and the children (along with their teachers and ancillary staff) are enjoying their well-earned, six-week break.
To all the parents reading, I’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a good thing! One small way to help fill those long days this month will be to join the ever-popular “Treasure Hunt” in some of this month’s issues. Our “Events and Gigs Guide” is always full of great ideas too. As the primary school leavers prepare for their next big step up to their secondary schools and the older students move on to higher education, training, or employment, we wish them every success and happy days to come. Well done parents and carers for having done brilliantly so far – now for the tricky bits! Enjoy every moment!
Claire x
On what was officially the UK‘s hottest ever day, I drove to north Norfolk in the evening for a family gathering. As I approached the coast, I thought back to those long-lost summer days when as teenagers my friends and I used to head to ‘Sunny Hunny’ for the day to celebrate our newly found freedom after we had all just passed our driving tests. We would pile into a clapped-out old banger – invariably Britishmade – and set off with high hopes but low expectations as sure as night followed day there would be a problem with our chosen form of transport. The car would either invariably over-heat, inexplicably lose power, jettison its exhaust, or shed a tyre or fan belt, meaning that most of the day would be spent by the side of the road and not on the beach or at the fun fair, with the likelihood of having to be towed home by a kind fellow motorist ...ah happy days!

SPONSORED BY THE SHED SHOP ugust is a very busy month, as there are lots of crops to harvest such as runner beans, second early potatoes and raspberries.
moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation, preferably immediately after it has rained. Jobs for August: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes.
Besides freezing vegetables and fruit, they can be used in jams, chutneys, pickles, flavoured oils, and vinegars. Several root vegetables store well in a cool, ventilated spot such as a shed or garage; remove their leaves and then put into layers of damp sand.
• Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter.
Now is the time for some forward planning, which is the key to a successful plot. As space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modulesremember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. Also, for harvesting in the autumn and beyond, you could sow lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads, including mibuna, mizuna, mustard leaf and lamb’s lettuce.
• Harvest courgettes regularly, before they grow too large.
Watch out for potato blight, (unsightly brown patches which appear rapidly on the foliage), common at the end of August when the weather is humid and damp. The leaves can soon be covered, and the plant will collapse. All is not lost if you cut off the stems at ground level before the blight reaches the tubers. If the weather carries on as it is now, (hot and dry), then watering is essential. To retain precious
• Cut to the ground all summer fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit. • Tomatoes, pumpkins, and squash need feeding with a tomato fertiliser. • Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. • Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down. Happy harvesting!

Repair or Replace?
M
The Choice is Yours!
artyn and Nicky Oglesby, joint-owners, and trading as M Oglesby Installations, have recently taken on a skilled window fitter with over thirty years’ experience. This is part of the gradual increase in sales and the need for Martyn to pass over the larger installations and concentrate more on the general day-to-day running of the business and the increase in the repair side of the business, thus enabling their many customers to make serious savings if they wish to do so.
Obviously, the installation of new and replacement uPVC and aluminium windows, conservatories and doors will hopefully continue to represent a large share of business for this Spalding-based
company which has been trading since 2013. With a solid reputation and over twenty-five years in the building trade, the company can provide the “full package” with a conservatory installation, for example. This means that any brick or blockwork, any tiling, or any serious structural modifications, such as lintel installations are entirely within his capability. M Oglesby Installations provide a full range of installation services and repairs on windows, conservatories, and doors, including locks, hinges, handles and misted glass unit replacement. So, however large or small the job, M Oglesby Installations will have the solution, serving an area across much of South Lincolnshire and parts of North Cambridgeshire.

CONSULTATION UNDERWAY ON FINAL VERSION OF WHITTLESEY NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The next stage of preparations for a new Whittlesey Neighbourhood Plan has got underway, with residents being invited to share their views on the submitted version of the plan. Whittlesey Town Council submitted the final version to Fenland District Council in June 2022, following a consultation on the draft version during summer 2021. As the local planning authority, Fenland District Council is now required to undertake a consultation to provide the opportunity for people to comment on the final submitted plan before it goes to independent examination. The consultation on the submitted plan will run until Thursday, September 1st. To view the plan and supporting documents, and take part, visit: www.fenland.gov.uk/consultations Hard copies of the consultation documents are also available at Whittlesey Library.

JUBILEE CELEBRATION A HUGE SUCCESS A Jubilee luncheon held at the Falcon Hotel, Whittlesey was a massive success with great service provided by the hotel’s staff. Guests enjoyed a sing song and waved flags in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee before toasting Her Majesty. AUGUST 2022
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR I trust that the majority of you are enjoying the summer sunshine although I know many suffer when the temperatures soar at the height of the season. The recent weather has certainly been kind to outdoor events everywhere and I would like to pay tribute to Robert and Julie Windle for their magnificent staging of Big Bash – The Sequel on the Manor Fields last month. The event lived up to the expectations of the public after the initial event last year. I was most impressed with the variety of stalls and activities and a superb display of classic vehicles combined with an ever-popular Golden Age Fair presented by Fenland District Council. A great day out that was the result of a year of tireless planning, so congratulations to all. The annual music festivals staged by Whittlesey Town Council on the Buttercross continue to go from strength to strength, again after months of planning, so congratulations to Cllr Ray Whitwell and his team for producing yet another season of free entertainment for the community. As mentioned in previous editions, my role on Whittlesey Town Council is that of both leader and civic head. The former role is responsible for the general administration and smooth running of the council, a mini chief executive position. The latter involves my attending, in company with my wife, Mayoress Ann Mason, a variety of civic functions throughout the Fenland district and beyond supporting my opposite numbers in adjoining counties and authorities as well as the more formal Remembrance Days etc.

amount of good that is exercised almost anonymously by so many generous folk. Charity is a feature that lies very much at the heart of any successful community and is not seen solely in large amounts of money raised for worthy causes. In my experience charity is practised by many members of the community who have little in financial terms themselves. This takes the form of looking after a sick neighbour, taking the time to talk to someone living alone, by offering to run an errand or by tending someone else’s garden when it becomes too much for the owner and so many other small kindnesses. My personal thanks go to Sue and Joe Jennings who give up so much of their weekly time in maintaining Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid, an organisation that is becoming increasingly necessary in these times of economic stress. Any donations, whether food or cash can be passed to Sue or Joe at the foodbank which is still situated in the car park of Whittlesey Christian Church whilst a move to Whittlesey Library is finalised.
To some people these functions are known as ‘jollies’ but in reality, we attend to assist our fellow mayors and chairmen in raising much needed funds for their local charities and in return they support us in Whittlesey.
For twenty-seven years I have been proud to be a freemason and have been fortunate to have risen to senior positions in various orders of freemasonry. There are many sound reasons to be a freemason and these are not so different to other organisations that carry out excellent service to the community such as Lions, Rotary etc but one of the orders that I belong to in freemasonry extolls three general virtues, faith, hope and charity and the greatest of these is charity.
The role of Mayor gives me rare privileges also in attending a variety of community events where I am continually made aware of the enormous

his Holbeach-based firm are establishing a very impressive reputation for the quality of their work and the service they provide, across a wide area of South Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. This can be clearly confirmed by the huge number of very favourable recommendations from satisfied customers on their website, www.lincolnshireresindrivesltd.co.uk, but especially on their Facebook pages.
Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The business owner explains how important it is to have a sound foundation, upon which the resin is to be applied. He recommends

Cannon & Co
Can Help Your Home Move
H
i everyone, Tania here from Cannon & Co Sales & Lettings. I would like to start off by thanking everyone who got in contact with us after reading last month’s editorial; the support we continually receive is phenomenal and it is nice to see our approach making a difference.
Property Market Updates Some of the people we have been speaking to over the last month have also recognised us from our weekly property news updates. We publish short videos over social media and more recently YouTube on a Sunday evening, which often reach thousands of people. There are many benefits that come with knowing what is going on in the property market, for example, understanding the value of your home when it comes to re-mortgaging can get you an even better deal. Most people who watch aren’t looking to sell. One person who called in this week said: ‘I’m not even interested in the market but I watched it all the way through and I found it interesting.’ We also find that these videos help you to get to know us, after all we really are just like you.
• How long does it take to sell a property? • What is happening with mortgage rates? • Is it a good time to buy for first-time buyers? While there are no definitive answers, by analysing and looking at key data points we can give an evidence-based answer that is backed up with reasons. The other thing I do feel is key, no matter what the market is like, there will always be people needing to move, whether that is to relocate, up/downsize, move due to divorce and first-time buyers looking to come to the market.
Some questions we are often asked:
If you would like to be kept up-to-date with property market alerts contact us via email: office@cannonandco.uk or call us on (01733) 641030.
• How have prices changed? • Is the property market slowing down?

The Electrical Installation Condition Report
What’s That All About Then? BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
This month, we’ve been getting lots of enquiries for Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) on houses that people are in the process of purchasing. This is something we certainly recommend for both buyers and sellers.
If you are a seller, getting a report on
your property shows any potential buyers that there is nothing wrong electrically with your home. Even if this uncovers a concern within your electrical system, and you may not wish to undertake the work, it still puts you in a better position because now you can put a figure against any repairs that need to be done. This makes negotiating much easier, as any work that needs to be done is now quantifiable.
If you are a buyer, getting a report on
a property that you are buying puts your mind at rest as it makes the level of work required transparent so you can go in with your eyes open. It may also help with mortgages or insurance if valuers or surveyors raise any concerns.
Domestic
In both instances, I believe this is highly beneficial, as having a report carried out well before the purchase is completed will help to stop delays later in the process. Many people believe that their electrics will have been checked by their surveyor in the buying process and are often surprised when we advise them that an electrical report is not generally included and must be requested separately by their electrician. If you are buying a property and the owner has an electrical report already, we recommend that you request this and have it reviewed to see what concerns it may have raised. For a complimentary review, e-mail the report to reports@altoelectrical.co.uk, or visit our website www.altoelectrical.co.uk for more information.

Stay Safe this Barbecue Season
By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Summer’s here – and whatever the weather, we Brits love our barbecues – a great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, offering a chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch, and the kids to have endless fun. Unfortunately, many barbecuerelated accidents occur in the garden each year, with burns accounting for the most injuries. However, careful planning and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is funfilled and not a flaming failure! 1) Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture, such as wooden or plastic chairs. 2) Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches, and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space. 3) Never leave a barbecue unattended. 15:38 4) Never let children too close to the barbecue. 5) Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. 6) If it’s a gas barbecue, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. 7) When choosing a barbecue, ensure it is strong and sturdy, and keep it well-maintained. 8) Disposable barbecues should be left to cool for several hours before being disposed of. And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in or near inflatable pools or garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens – children can drown in less than 3cm of water. • Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – a dangerous trip hazard. • Protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking gates, sheds, garages, and windows when you are relaxing on those balmy summer evenings. PASSIVE AND ACTIVE INVESTMENT STYLES By Eamonn Dorling Investing for a variety of reasons can spread outcomes over differing timescales. For example, further education, the holiday of a lifetime, and major modifications to a home might need to be planned over what many regard as short to medium-term timescales, typically up to about eight years. As the plan unfolds, the remaining time shortens so investment volatility becomes a greater risk (or opportunity). Longer-term plans, such as retirement, might be planned over longer timescales if one has started early enough. Often, I am asked whether this has an impact on the underlying investments and how they are managed. The answer is that it has a significant impact. Taking short-term positions to avoid poor performance or take advantage of opportunities requires active management – this means using the expertise of fund managers’ knowledge, skill and attitude. They do not always get it right (but more often than not they do) and they will certainly remind the world when they do! You might think that this is how fund managers work all the time, but it can be expensive, and there are examples of managers getting it so wrong that they should have not acted at all! The alternative is to track one or several indices that reflect the fund objectives. For example, a computer can replicate what makes up a market index such as the FTSE 100® without actually investing in all the constituent parts. As computers can be set to work every day of the week across all time zones, you can see how this might be cheaper than paying high salaries to investment managers across the globe. Having drawn a distinction between these two strategies, the former is known as active management and the latter is passive
management. The difference in annual management charges can be as low as 0.22 percent for passive and over 1.0% for active. On a fund of £100,000, the charges could be £250 to £1000. Higher charges are not a problem when the net return (what you get after the costs have been deducted) is substantial enough, but even in a weak market, charges still apply. It is generally agreed that long-term planning suits passive management because the lower charges plus probable long-term graph shape make this acceptable. For short-term growth potential, the additional cost of ‘ducking and diving’ and awareness of probable mediumterm outcomes can make the higher charges of active management worthwhile. Remember that following an index up is fine but following it down can be harder to accept. Investments are likely to go up and down, and there are few guarantees. An independent financial adviser that understands your objectives, however, will blend various strategies and tactics to get the required funds available when required. This also involves having some funds easily available to cover very short-term emergencies so that the medium to long-term plans are not interfered with, and changes in circumstances to not distract from the end game. Advisers research fund managers constantly and use sophisticated software to spot trends. Ask what the plan would be if a market downturn coincided with a planned event. If you need an independent view, contact an independent financial adviser. Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. WILDFLOWERS BLOOM IN WHITTLESEY A colourful display of bee and insect-friendly wildflowers has bloomed in Fenland following a successful planting pilot by Fenland District Council. The 6000 square metre wildflower meadow was sown at The Manor Leisure Centre field in Whittlesey last November, ready to bloom in the summer. It is anticipated that further wildflower areas will be created by the council in community open spaces next year in a bid to improve biodiversity and encourage wildlife. Other options also being considered include leaving specific areas within large open spaces to grow wild, with no mowing, to allow for a muchricher habitat that supports pollinators like bees and butterflies and other insects. Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Not only are impressive displays of wildflower colour beautiful to look at, but they also provide a perfect environment for flora and fauna to flourish. “We’re really keen to increase the biodiversity and boost wildlife on our public land so will be looking at where we can create more wildflower spaces next year and reviewing our grounds maintenance to see if there are areas where we can let the grass grow.” AUGUST 2022

LOCAL FILMMAKER TO SHOWCASE THE FENS
A
ustin Staton is a local filmmaker and actor bringing his experience of working and performing for companies such as the BBC, ITV, SBTV as well as commercials for Soap & Glory and Cadbury’s to fulfil a long-held ambition to show off his native locale in a new film. Outlining the plot of his dance-based drama, PERENNIAL, Whittlesey resident Staton suggests the film is a mixture of ‘Billy Elliot meets Leon meets Harold and Maude.’ “It’s set entirely in The Fens,” he said, “predominantly within a small market town and centres on a homeless man and former professional dancer (played by Austin) who reluctantly befriends a young girl to teach her how to dance for her school talent show. She, meanwhile, attempts to help him rekindle his broken relationship with his children.” Raised in Huntingdon, The Fens is an area Staton knows well, and is passionate about. He said: “My home is a small market town in The Fens with a terrific sense of community and this has partly been my inspiration to make this film, alongside interviews and conversations with the homeless community.” The film is the realisation of a dream he has had his whole adult life to leave a legacy of film behind. Staton passionately believes his film can transcend borders, and despite being filmed locally is much more than ‘just a Fens thing.’ Its subject matter is sure to strike a chord with anyone who has ever been estranged from their loved ones and an underlying message of searching for the universal good in people.
Perennial and is currently raising additional funds for the project via the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe. He said: “The one thing I’ve learned is that our community is very strong. It takes an army to make a film and I’m hoping we can make this film together.” Anyone wishing to help fund this exciting project or come onboard to help should visit gofundme.com/perennial where they can also find out more about the film and watch some advance clips, which were created in collaboration with talented Cambridge based filmmaker Nicolas Umberto Hepburn.
Working with a local cast including Peterborough schoolgirl Amelia Brown, who is set to make her on-screen debut, and in partnership with Whittlesey-based filmmaking company Bridge In The Sky (www.bridgeinthesky.com), Staton already has support from local businesses for

e love August. The sun is out (sometimes a little too much, but we can’t complain), the children are having a great time seeing the animals and everyone is enjoying being outside in the sunshine with a cool smoothie or iced latte and a bite to eat, chilling under the shade of our lovely marquee or basking in the great British sunshine. Steve and Ben are in full-on harvest mode during August, although this year looked like being one of the earliest we have ever had.
on the day, park in our huge overflow carpark and enjoy. Picnics are welcome too, so it’s a great day out for everyone. Our head chef Simon is busy creating delicious salads, quiches and deli items to buy in the coffee shop, while we stock up on Natasha, of Bake Me Sweet’s, wonderful brownies and bakes. There are also still some spaces for birthday parties too, although days are very limited so do get in contact to avoid missing out...
All farmers are saying the same – it’s a very early, dry, hot harvest and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their understanding and support of farmers at this time of year. They work incredibly long hours to get the harvest in and then get next year’s crop in the ground too – it’s hot, tiring work and if you find yourself stuck behind a tractor or combine for a little way, please give them a little time and plenty of space, plus a cheery wave would be much appreciated! Over at the farm shop the fun doesn’t stop. We’ll be hosting our annual summer fun day – this year dubbed ‘The Great Big British Summertime Fun Fest!’ We’ll have huge inflatables, fun and games, food trucks, live music, a mobile bar, face painting, balloon modelling and a visit from the one and only, Paddington Bear. Entry to the Fun Fest is completely FREE, with limited number of FREE balloon models too. Simply turn up

Method
1 Purée the mango, banana and coconut milk in a blender until rich and smooth. Pour the mixture into lolly moulds and freeze overnight. 2 The next day, whizz the granola slightly in a food processor to remove any large lumps (or tip into a bowl and bash with the end of a rolling pin), then tip into a bowl. 3 Melt the chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, making sure the base of the bowl isn’t in contact with the water. 4 Remove the lollies from their moulds. Dip the tops one at a time in the chocolate, then into the granola. Place on a tray lined with baking parchment to set – they will set very quickly. Eat immediately or freeze until needed.

Staying Safe in Summer Summer time is here and so are sunny days spent outdoors, splashing in pools and relaxing on the beach. However, summer can cause some extra wear and tear on the body. Most people usually protect themselves by using sunscreen and sunglasses. But many will forget to look after two of the most important and neglected parts of the body – their feet. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself, especially your feet, from salt water, sand, and other summer scares: • Remember to apply sunscreen to feet, especially the tops and fronts of ankles. Don't forget to reapply regularly if you're in and out of the water! • When out of the water, wash and dry feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, and apply an anti-fungal medication on itchy skin. Clean, dry feet resist disease. • Pass up sharing towels to avoid developing athlete's foot and other diseases that can easily be spread. • Take special care of toenails, which are especially vulnerable around damp areas. Injury to the nail bed may make it more susceptible to infection so see your podiatrist at the first sign of discoloration or infection. • To avoid toe and ankle injuries, wear shoes that are specific to the activity or sport you're participating in. Never play Frisbee in sandals and be sure to wear boots when working outside and mowing the lawn. • Give yourself plenty of time to break in new shoes before going on trips where you'll be doing lots of walking. And when trying on new shoes, make sure you have on the same socks you plan on wearing with them. • When on holiday abroad and in the ocean, be cautious of jellyfish that often bite at feet
and ankles and sharp coral that can cut the undersides of feet. Keeping sandals or water shoes on at all times is a good idea to prevent stings, cuts, and other injuries. • Watch out for prickly sea urchin spines when taking walks on the beach. Avoid walking barefoot; wear an old pair of running shoes or flip-flops to protect yourself from jagged rocks, shells, spines, and debris that could float ashore. • And most importantly, swim, walk, and enjoy the summer!! Walking is the best form of exercise for your feet and swimming is a great alternative for those suffering from tendonitis and plantar fasciitis, which can make other types of exercise painful.

But there is something to be said for the benefits of summer. Sunlight provides us with vitamin D, which helps keep our bones strong, and it also boosts serotonin, the hormone responsible for keeping us happy, and helps keep depression at bay. In our modern world, summer can often mean endless obligations – weddings, barbecues, entertaining children during their school holidays – but if we stop to enjoy a mindful moment, appreciating nature’s gift of summer, it can really benefit our mental health. Here are a few simple ideas… Our ancestors would have spent this time ensuring that their crops were growing well, and that young animals born in the spring were cared for. So, why not spend some time watering your plants? If you don’t have a large garden space, there are plenty of varieties of houseplants to suit every space. In my bedroom alone, I have about thirty(!), and find that it really boosts my mood.

Do you remember how you used to play when you were young? Let’s get in touch with that inner child! Fill a paddling pool or washing up bowl with water and have a good old splash! You’re never too old to feel the cool water refresh your hot skin. One of my favourite things about summer is kicking my shoes off. I love the freeing feeling of walking barefoot around my garden and feeling the earth beneath my feet. If you’re feeling brave, try it at the park or at the beach, and feel the warm grains of sand between your toes. But always be careful and watch out for sharp bits! Recently I have been making a lot of sun teas. Pop some chamomile flowers, lavender, and any other herb you fancy into a jug of water (ensuring you’re not using anything toxic). Cover and leave in the sun for the day, then in the evening pour over ice, and drink up that liquid sunshine! Above all else, take care of your health. Always use plenty of sunscreen, seek shade in the middle of the day, and drink so much water that you feel you might burst! Wishing you all a fabulous summer!

ometimes life throws the unexpected our way, without rhyme or reason. But our future doesn’t have to be affected when the worst happens. We can choose not to allow adversity to dictate our future. But are we destined for good things to come, or are we floating along as the wind blows? In the popular movie of twenty-eight years ago, Forrest Gump struggled with learning difficulties, and was bullied at school. In later life, he enlists with the army. His platoon is led by Lieutenant Dan, who believed his destiny was to die with honour on the battlefield. Instead, he is severely injured but carried to safety by Private Gump. Devastated when he loses both legs, he despairs of his future. He remembers a promise he made to serve with his former conscript, if ever he became a shrimp boat captain. He chooses to keep his word and joins in a daily struggle to find shrimp. On one expedition, in the quiet after a storm, he makes his peace with God, and things begin to change for the better. God says that He is for us in times of trouble: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” He is bigger than the storms which come our way and is faithful to provide what we need to find strength and realise our true destiny in His purposes. You are most welcome to visit us on Sunday mornings at 10.45am in Broad Street. We are a friendly and informal church. We hope that you will come and find a new hope for a bright future. Help to Regenerate Your Local Area
Peterborough Community Development Trust Limited (PCD), a Community Benefit Society (CBS), was formed in December 2021. It is governed by The Financial Conduct Authority. Our team of advisors are Resonance Impact Investment Limited, Buckles Solicitors LLP and MacIntyre Hudson LLP.
T
he purpose of PCDT is to secure, develop and hold in perpetuity strategic assets in Peterborough and the surrounding villages. Formed for the benefit of the community, it will act as a responsible investment vehicle for people and organisations to own an actual share of these investments.
Our ambition is to bring about regeneration in the area – enhancing the current local assets and developing new assets when they are needed. The CBS will continually assess the local need and work with local people to bring about the necessary change. We know we can get more done and see more positive benefit if we pool our ambition and efforts in bringing community assets into the ownership of the community itself. We are exploring ways in which we can help add value to a variety of different strategic opportunities. We’re interested in investing in and securing any assets should they become vulnerable or need our help. This could be: • Theatres • Libraries • Community centres • New all-weather pitches and other sports facilities • Renewable energy installations

Our first project is to purchase the iconic New Theatre Peterborough, formerly known as The Broadway Theatre. We are delighted to be working with Landmark Theatres Limited (Selladoor Venues), who are the current operators of the theatre. Our target is to raise £3.5 million to buy the building and meet ancillary costs. We aim to raise the funds by offering withdrawable community shares, apply for Capital Grants and Debt Capital. The Dawe Charitable Trust has already subscribed £50,000 to our Pioneer Share Offer to meet the project’s start-up costs. If you would like to share our ambition, you can become a member of PCDT by applying for our share offer (minimum investment of twenty shares @ £1 per share). Members will have a direct say in how we work and we welcome hands-on involvement from them. If you would like to make a one-off donation, however small, please pay by Bacs transfer to Peterborough Community Development Trust Limited. Sort code: 60-83-01, Account number: 20458564. For further information or to request for a share application form please email us: admin@pcdtrust.org.uk Jane Dawe (Chair), Vijju Churchman (Company Secretary), Jeremy Hargreaves (Director).

The Manor Field on Station Road, Whittlesey hosted Big Big Bash ll, The Sequel, the final day of eight days of activities, entertainment and services around the town.
THE
Wide-ranging activities included mum and toddler groups to music and table tennis on the Buttercross, the licensing of a priest in charge and associate vicar in St Mary's Church to netball, coffee mornings and school activities.
BIG
Organised by Whittlesey Sports Association Chairman, Robert Windle, thirty-six free to attend events took place catering for all ages during the week thanks to existing groups throwing their doors open to all.
BASH isa
Big Bash Day itself saw a Golden Age Fair and Tea Dance Family Disco inside the Manor Centre Conference Hall, whilst outside it was music by young and up-and-coming talent and the Peterborough Highland Pipe Band.
BIG
There were plenty of sporting activities to have a go at with 225 youngsters enjoying fishing, and other sports also being inundated with participants. Cambs Fire Service had plenty of people climbing all over its fire engine, and millions of pounds worth of classic vehicles were lined up on the field and admired by all.
HIT!
It was also a special day for 14-year-old Bethany Mcfarling who won a competition organised by Fenland Youth Radio to be VIP of the day. Bethany and the Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr David Mason opened the event. Robert Windle thanked major sponsors EPD Insulation Group, Allison Homes, Freedom Leisure and Fenland District Council for their support leading up to and on the day.
Whittlesey Street Pride had a stall at the Big Bash and also held a raffle for a chocolate cake, kindly donated by Tesco Serpentine. The group has said a big thank you to all those that attended and litter picked; one member, although showing in the Classic Car division, still found time to litter pick and a total of nearly twenty bags was collected during the day. The winning ticket was drawn by a Baptist Church member and was such a surprise to the winner, Diana Green, that she was still crying even when accepting the prize. She said that she was emotionally overcome with her win, especially as it followed the loss of her husband earlier this year.
