Alongside the leaves changing colour and early morning mists appearing, a key indicator for many these days is hearing who this year’s contestants will be, as the annual Strictly Come Dancing sequin-fest once again sashays onto our screens! This month sees families facing up to the new academic year. Whether that involves seeing your little ones in their first primary school, your older ones embarking on a new secondary school regime, or your even older ones stepping out into higher education (presenting you with “empty nest syndrome” along the way!) we wish you all the very best for the months and years ahead. You do come through on the other side … believe me! Claire x I recently had cause to purchase a new suit. An upcoming wedding led me to survey my current ones which unfortunately looked a bit tired and to be honest, old-fashioned. When I worked in a daily newspaper office, I wore suits all the time but in recent years they only really come out for funerals (unfortunately) and the odd customer visit. I thought this would be a relatively straightforward exercise. How wrong I was. For I found in numerous stores that in the unlikely event of there being a jacket I liked in my size there was little chance that there would also be a matching set of trousers. In the old days you would get mobbed by over enthusiastic staff like those that used to feature in TV’s Fast Show’s ‘Suits You’ sketches but now help was not at hand. However, I did eventually get fixed up – in shop number eight or nine – but was then unable to find any suitable size eleven shoes. Perhaps I’m just an old fashion victim... The Great Big British Summer Time Fun Fest in August was a great success, despite the thirty-five-degree heat. Thank you to all our customers, new and old, suppliers and staff for making the day so much fun!

Exciting times Harvest Barn

W ell, it’s September! Personally, our favourite time of the year. Harvest is over, we’ve started cultivating for next year and all the wonderful autumn produce will soon be hitting our shelves. This year’s harvest was a rollercoaster. Despite multiple combine harvester breakdowns and issues, we still managed to finish harvest in record time –before farmer Steve’s birthday... which is unheard of! Now it’s over, time for a rest for Ben and Steve before the process starts again, ready to sow our winter oats. Over in the farm shop and café, there’s plenty of new and exciting things coming this month too! Get ready for spring 2023, with our brand-new range of new season bulbs and plants, all due to be delivered by the beginning of September. Our shelves will be stocked with fresh, new season potatoes, runner beans, corn, Victoria plums and more. Keep an eye on our menu in the coffee shop too. Our talented chefs are busy planning the new autumn menu, full of warm salads, quiches, pastries and other bakes; there is surely enough choice to please even the pickiest of eaters.

Whittlesey’s historic Falcon Hotel has been put under the spotlight by TV show

presenter Alex Polizzi and film crew visited it for ten days in May and June, having been brought in to advise on how to turn around the hotel‘s fortunes.

“We have had a lot of favourable comments from Whittlesey residents with only a couple of negative comments, which you expect, so overall it has been very positive.”

“We started to introduce a two-course lunch offer during the programme’s filming and trade has picked-up and we have now redecorated the second of our bedrooms.

“Alex was fine with us off camera. I’ve taken on-board some of the advice she has given us, particularly focusing on the outside of the hotel to make it look more appealing.

Colin, who has been at the helm of the Falcon for the past eleven years, said: “It was a really useful experience. They were here for ten days, filming for eight or nine hours a day, before editing it down to make the programme.

‘The Hotel Inspector’

Colin, a Geordie with more than forty years’ experience in the hospitality industry, has proven to be a popular host of the 16th century hotel, which boasts eight bedrooms and a 45-seater restaurant, The COVID-19 pandemic saw him provide meals for the local elderly and those in greatest need in an initiative co-ordinated by The Helping Whittlesey group. You can find Colin at The Falcon Hotel, 1 London Street, Whittlesey, Peterborough PE7 1BH. Tel: 01733 351001. Email: falconhotel@hotmail.co.uk

When first arriving, Alex branded the hotel –run by Colin Wilson (62) and his daughter Jean (28) – as ‘so depressing’ and an ’old bird that has seen better days.’ She advised the pair to improve the external appearance of the hotel, give the bedrooms a makeover and concentrate on its food menu. She left praising Colin’s food and saying they were a ‘great family’ and ‘there was light at the end of the tunnel.’

A GREAT NIGHT IN PROSPECT

Summer continues with the exceptional weather that we have all been enjoying, if you can stand the heat, and of course the good weather has enabled most of the outside events to take place with bumper audiences. Among those events have been the usual three music festivals held on the Buttercross in June, July and August and Whittlesey Town Council is at an advanced stage in securing a similar number of festivals at the same location next summer. In addition, a music festival is planned for Coates next year along with the Big Bash once more on the Manor Fields. Please look out for further details as they are published. In 1972 the Manor Leisure Centre was opened and over the years the venue has hosted a variety of sports and activities which have been enjoyed by many of our citizens today and by those of previous Whilstgenerations.theswimming pool and gymnasiums, skatepark, bowls club and children’s play area attract good, regular use and enjoyment there are other facilities that have been in decline for some Whittleseytime.Town Council will now make the relaunch of the Manor Leisure Centre a priority over the coming months to enable it to return as a sporting and community hub for all. We have recently held preliminary talks with officials of Fenland District Council and Freedom Leisure to determine the way forward and whilst final details need to be confirmed I hope to be able to report next month on a new location within the Manor Leisure Centre for Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid following a breakdown of talks with Cambridgeshire County Council in securing a site behind Whittlesey Library. Similarly, negotiations have begun on Whittlesey Town Council locating the Heritage Centre within the Manor grounds. We are also requesting Fenland District Council to consider the siting of a permanent meeting place for Phoenix Youth Club within the Manor complex. Whilst costs are an issue and funding streams need to be sourced and explored, Whittlesey Town Council would dearly love to encourage a wide range of sporting activities at the Manor Leisure Centre once more. We accept that cricket, football and tennis clubs have relocated elsewhere but with public support new sporting avenues could be explored at a time when the country has been enthused by the success of the Ladies England Football team in the recent Euros and the highly acclaimed Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. To enable any new activities to be successful dedicated volunteers are needed to enthuse young and old alike in healthy and rewarding activity. If there is anyone who would be prepared to give up their time in this cause and if they have a skill and passion for a particular activity then we would love to hear from you. There are numerous activities to choose from but we would be especially interested in promoting athletics or rugby if sufficient interest was apparent.

MICROWAVE THERAPY FOR SKIN MRK25, Issue 2

Infected tissue can exist several millimetres below the surface and can often be difficult to treat using traditional methods, resulting in either untreated tissue or significant damage. Microwave energy is widely used in a number of medical fields to elevate tissue temperatures and create precise, localised cell destruction. Swift delivers a precise, highly controlled energy dose. As microwaves travel into the tissue, water molecules begin colliding and creating localised heat energy – quickly destroying all infected tissue within a predetermined depth. In just seconds the treatment is complete, leaving the body to absorb and replace the treated tissue.

Your GP will be able to advise on local agencies that may be able to help you, such as “Steps2Change”, the “Psychological Wellbeing Service”, or local charities such as Don’t Lose Hope. Here’s to breaking down the stigma, making time for ourselves, and a happy and healthy ‘new year’!

September means one thing for most of us – back to school! It may be that you are embarking on a new year of learning at school, college, or university.

For many of us, it is our children, and perhaps a stark reminder to us of how fast they are growing. Teachers may be experiencing a serious jolt back to reality, after a long, hot, few weeks off. Or, for some of us, it may just mean that the rush hour traffic is back to its worst!

NewNewYear?You!

18 DISCOVERING Whittlesea SEPTEMBER 2022Bourne

Whatever your situation, September brings a new beginning, similar to January, or a birthday. Looking to make some changes? Who says you must wait until January? Now is a great time! With our busy modern lives, how many of us actually pay attention to our mental health? It is so easy to get bogged down with our daily chores, notifications on our phones, or those rising bills arriving on our doormat.

Many people think that therapy and self-help books are reserved for those who are struggling. But what if we were to prevent a looming burnout? As someone who has experienced a major burnout myself – one, unfortunately, where I had to leave my job – I believe that the best course of action is prevention! It could be implementing something as simple as switching off your phone and going for a walk every evening. Or perhaps setting aside some time to light some candles and have a bath. Our phones can be such a cause of anxiety. Why not flip that around, and use it to actually help our mental health? Just type “Mental Health” into the Google Play or Apple store, and hundreds of brilliantly rated self-care apps will pop up. “Headspace” and “Calm” are great for relaxation and guided meditations. Or perhaps a mood tracker may suit you better?

T o help reduce water evaporating in these hot conditions, firstly remove all weeds, as they will compete for moisture, then add a mulch of at least three inches depth and do not water during the heat of the day. The best time to water is early in the morning when water will soak into the ground, and if plant foliage gets wet, it will dry off, helping to avoid diseases.

• Winter lettuces – “Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose.

• Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves.

• Onion sets and garlic.

• Spinach.

September is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and they will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring.

• Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

It’s time to lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days. Onions should be kept in the light; you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed. Potatoes, however, should be stored in hessian or paper sacks in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed.

• Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread diseases. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures”, such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia. If you have a light soil, they can be left in over winter but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig.

Now would be a good time to make or buy a composter as there is plenty of dead or dying material available. If you have one, add any material that isn’t diseased, turn it, water if it is dry and cover to keep warm. Don’t forget to add “brown” materials such as: autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, eggshells, and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of “greens” to “browns” should be 50/50, with no dairy products, meat, fish, or non-degradable materials.

We have had an exciting month at Cannon & Co Sales & Lettings. We have been awarded the Gold Winner of the British Property Awards in PE7-8, an excellent accomplishment. However, it was the feedback from the mystery shoppers that I found Weinvaluable.knowwe are an estate agency like no other. As we set up from personal experiences we understand what you need, also with transferable skills from other industries... it makes a difference. The way I see it is, in life we all need help from others as we cannot know everything. I might ask my friend who works in a pharmacy for advice, or my friend who knows more than me about something else, and this help and passing on information is important to us. We make sure we talk about the process with everyone, and what everything means; no-one should be left unsure of anything, after all it is our job to go through and make sure you are comfortable, and it was taking the time with people that got us the award. Some of the things that we came across to win the award; there was a gentleman looking to sell a property in the area, which was being rented out; he had moved away and works shifts so felt it would be difficult. As you all are aware life isn’t 9-5 anymore so despite him working shifts there will be a time he can get hold of us.

There was a first time buyer who didn’t know what was needed to start the process of buying a house or what an agreement in principle meant and also someone looking to relocate to the area wanting to know what amenities and the schools were like. Being a part of the community, I enjoy talking about our town and explaining what it has to offer and this is what stood out. Most of all I want to thank you all for being on this journey with us and making it possible; the continued support means so much. his month as always there is a lot going on with the property market. Our weekly updates on Facebook continue to get a lot of interest, even for people not looking to buy or sell, so if you haven’t already, go and have a watch.

“My interest in building work started when I was a young lad and I used to help out my uncle Geoff and I have been doing it all my working life. So far business has been good although recently things have slowed down a bit because of the general economic climate, however I love what I do and eventually would like to expand into commercial work.”

Sam is based in Whittlesey and after leaving college worked on a number of local building projects including the conversion of The Hero Of Aliwal public house to Whittlesey Veterinary Centre before starting his own business.

Natalie, who holds a postgraduate diploma from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, offers a free thirty-minute consultation, with no obligation, to chat through what will work best for you and your business. A comprehensive website offers multiple services, including online courses, and informative blog posts by Natalie herself.

On September 28th, from 10am-3pm, The Little Marketing Company is holding a free marketing event at Brightfield Business Hub in Peterborough, about how important it is to keep marketing when times get tough. At this event, you can learn how to market your business during a (potentially looming!) recession, why to keep marketing during financially challenging times, and how it can be beneficial to your business. Natalie wants to help other business owners understand that marketing is not to be seen as an ‘expense’, but a valuable tool for growing your business. She will also be sharing lessons that she has learned through her personal experience as a business owner.

She currently has an apprentice, and other young people working for her, wanting to give the youth of Whittlesey the very best start in their careers.

O ne of the pieces of feedback I have had from a customer is that they didn’t realise how involved a rewire would be and how much dust would be created, but rewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided, because it’s something that is only usually suggested when the installation in your home is in need of replacement.

BY LIMITEDELECTRICALALTOEVERITT,COLEEN

34 DISCOVERING Whittlesea SEPTEMBER 2022Bourne 01778 772595 01780 693595 Domestic ● Commercial ● www.altoelectrical.co.ukHeritage Unit 12, Glen Industrial Estate, Essendine, Rutland PE9 4LE Home

To prepare you … you are likely to have holes that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow there is going to be damage! We always minimise it as much as we can, because we don’t like leaving holes in walls either. We can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you, if required. But don’t worry! Everything is able to be fixed, and once it is decorated, everything will look lovely and fresh, your electrical installation is going to last you between twenty-five and fifty years, and everything will be safe for you and your family. So how can we make this as painless as possible?

So, You

WARN THE NEIGHBOURS - Nobody likes conflict between neighbours, but having noisy renovation work can cause problems, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, as long as they know how long it will last. Alto Electrical have a letter template to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details, in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked.

MOVE OUT - I often ask my customers to move out when they are having a rewire; not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages.

PUT THINGS AWAY - Alto Electrical always cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all of the dust sheets without disturbing it and getting it in the air and it will resettle on your surfaces. Need a Rewire?

DON’T GO TOO FAR - When we are working on your home, there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, if we can’t access a certain area we would check about going via another route. Sometimes we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.

Martyn and Nicky Oglesby, joint-owners, and trading as M Oglesby Installations, have recently taken on a skilled window fitter with over thirty years’ experience. How to protect yourself

3) Never share your account’s activation code (that’s the six-digit code you receive via SMS).

As a parent, one of your worst nightmares is receiving a mobile phone message from your child telling you they are in trouble. Hundreds of parents are being caught out by the current WhatsApp scam doing the rounds –the number of these scams has rocketed by more than 2,000% in the last year, according to Lloyds Bank. The “Mum and Dad Scam”: involves con-artists convincing parents their children are in trouble and need a cash transfer. The scammer will typically begin the conversation with “Hello Mum” or “Hello Dad” and say that they are texting from a new mobile number as their phone was lost or damaged and will go on to ask for money to purchase a new phone or claim that they need money urgently to pay a bill. The criminal will supply their bank details for payment, with some coming back on multiple occasions until the victim realises that they’ve been scammed.

1) If a family member or friend makes an unusual request on WhatsApp, always call the person to confirm their identity.

Supermarket Scam: Scammers send out fake Tesco, Asda, and Marks & Spencer vouchers on WhatsApp. The messages look like they have been sent by a thoughtful friend and designed to trick you into clicking on the link to claim the voucher. There are two classic signs that this is a scam: the spelling and grammar mistakes and, if you type in the URL mentioned in the offer, you will see that the page does not exist.

The good news is that for those wishing to benefit from investing in change – the offerings are widening all the time. Some of my clients are happy to invest most or all their holdings in ESG-managed funds, some use ESG for some of their portfolios.

Delivering Simple Financial Advice - that really works

Last month we looked at passive and active management. Although some environmental, social and governancebased investments (ESG) are managed passively, some of the best ones benefit from active intervention. The subject has become interesting to many clients as, according to the Met Office, we experience the driest and hottest July since 1911. The link between extraordinary rainfall in some parts of the world and raging wildfires in the USA and Europe asks the question if we should not be linking these events with global Companieswarming? are being held to account for their actions rather than ‘greenwashing’ their activities. These matters can be influenced by investors large and small. Some industries need to evolve or fail, some practices of the past will no longer be tolerated and some solutions have not even been invented yet.

Fifteen Year 8 and 9 students from Sir Harry Smith Community College have been working on an exciting project to learn more about their school’s ‘Changemakers’namesake.isa

DISCOVERING SIR HARRY SMITH

Jack Harris, a history teacher at the college, said: “Like many figures of his time, Harry Smith has a complex legacy. One of our aims with this project was to address the issue of historical interpretation – how the past is viewed by those who come after it – and the challenges that brings for museums. The students really got on board with these challenging concepts, and we are all looking forward to seeing the finished exhibition.”

Later, Pippa taught the students how to write for a museum audience and they were treated to an inspiring talk from special guest Olivia Townsend, a former student who is currently reading History at Cambridge University. Finally, they used their research to start creating their museum exhibition on Sir Harry Smith.

Darryl Tomlin, curriculum manager for history at the school, added: “Many of our students had no prior knowledge about Sir Harry Smith but finished the project with a newfound appreciation for the history on their doorstep. We are extremely grateful to Pippa and the volunteers at Whittlesey Museum for giving them this opportunity.”

The students echoed these sentiments. “I really enjoyed walking around Whittlesey and researching Harry Smith’s life,” said one. “It has made me learn a lot about this area.” Another commented: “I am definitely going to consider museum work in the future because I have really enjoyed this project.”

Harry Smith was born in Whittlesey in 1787 and is arguably the town’s most famous son. Over the course of a fifty-year military career, he saw action in places such as America, Waterloo, India and South Africa. Today, his name is commemorated in numerous places both locally and abroad.

The students began their research with a walking tour of Whittlesey to visit key places associated with Smith’s life, including his birthplace, the church where he was schooled and his grave. They then enjoyed a visit to Whittlesey Museum where they were given the rare opportunity to handle historic artefacts from the museum’s collection. Working like real historians, they studied letters, photographs, newspapers and other items from Smith’s life.

National Lottery funded project run by Museums in Cambridge which aims to increase engagement between five Fenland museums and local young people. Working with Pippa Smith, one of the Changemakers Project Team, students from Sir Harry Smith Community College took on the challenge of creating a new exhibition for Whittlesey Museum looking at the person their college is named after.

Another successful Whittlesey & Villages Yard Sale was organised by Sandra Donechnie with more than one hundred households opening their gardens and driveways to raise valuable funds for Defibrillators For All. One of the venues hosted a special gathering with drinks and a superb venue to relax. Whilst the 1st Whittlesey Scouts raised more than £350 towards sending two of their members to the World Scouting Jamboree in South Korea next year. Overall, this ensured more than £1000 was raised for this great cause.

Cllr Chris Boden, leader of Fenland District Council and cabinet member for finance, said: “We are living amid the worst cost-of-living squeeze since the 1970s, with soaring bills hitting everyone’s pockets. “So, we are extremely proud not only that the council has maintained excellent public services and pushed forward with ambitious plans for the future, but that we’ve done this while freezing our portion of the Council Tax for four years in a row.”

An insight into the breadth of work Fenland District Council undertakes for local people has been detailed in its annual report for 2021-2022. The report, now available online at www.fenland. gov.uk/AnnualReport, charts the progress the council has made across a wide range of key service areas, outlines what has been achieved in the past year and how it has spent the income it receives.
