o vember? No way! Are we really only ten weeks away from 2024?

Still, it’s been for many of us a most enjoyable year so far and, with the festive period just around the corner, there are plenty of wonderful things still to come. Remember, though, that it shouldn’t just be “looking after number one”, as there are so many people for whom the coming weeks, (made worse by the cold and cruel winter weather), are going to be “endured” rather than “enjoyed”. Let’s all look out for each other, especially that lonely neighbour who we think might be ok, but why not just make the call to make sure? Kindness and being a good neighbour cost nothing! A big thank you to all our contributors and advertisers in all our five “Discovering” magazines who continue, month after month, to supply such a wide range of informative, entertaining, and very useful features and advice.

For many years I have always tried to attend my local Remembrance Day Parade to show my respect for those who gave their lives while serving the country. In the early days it was to honour those people who died in the two World Wars of the twentieth century, with thoughts later extending to the Falklands Conflict and Gulf wars. Sadly, recent events have shown us that worldwide conflict is not something from the past, it is an abomination that we unfortunately have to continue to tolerate in the 21st century. I’m sure many of you share my horror at the tragic stories that have emanated from Ukraine and now the Middle East and the suffering of many innocent men, women and children. The local services are usually supported by hundreds of people of all ages and on Sunday, November 12th I plan to attend again. Hope you can too...

DRINKS FOR CELEBRATIONS (and for other times too!)

parkling wines are always great for celebrations, events, and occasions. There are many countries, worldwide, that produce sparkling wines. Champagne is very much recognised as a leader in this type of wine.

For this month’s quest, I searched for Champagnes which for me had that ‘something extra’ appeal – ‘without breaking the bank’ – whilst retaining a fine perlage and having excellent presentation, amongst other qualities. A. Carpentier Champagne (12.5% vol) I found to be excellent. Possessing elegance, with floral overtones, this well-balanced, French delight constantly adorns many dining tables, and is also a very popular ‘welcome drink’, at numerous receptions. The perfect perlage of fine bubbles adds to the overall enjoyment of this production. Montaudon Elixiris Champagne (12% vol) has a lot of devotees. Established during 1891, this company continues to produce Champagne to a most exceptional standard, combining the Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes, splendidly. This refreshing and fruity delectation carries on pleasing, gaining more lovers of Champagne, yearly.

Following combinations of complementing wines for dishes, at dining occasions, with some people choosing white or red wines (or pink ones) to accompany various foods, we come to something for afterwards. Certainly, several fortified wines and liqueurs appeal. I do like a good liqueur and the Deluxe Irish Cream Liqueur (17% vol) ‘hits the spot’ for me. This small-batch production delight is made using the best Irish dairy cream. Blended with fine spirits and fine Irish whiskey, this makes a very popular and splendid ending to a meal. It can be enjoyed straight or over ice. Many like it with ice cream or accompanying coffee. Simply wonderful!

Flavoured gin liqueurs are also extremely popular. Hortus Rhubarb & Ginger Gin Liqueur (20% vol) is a blended, handcrafted, botanical production, which I found to be very pleasing. It is, as it states, a gin, traditionally distilled in copper stills in England, with rhubarb and ginger flavours coming through, for the mouthfeel and palate. And, I would add – superbly! I found these productions at a Lidl store, whose wines and drinks offer amazing value and are most worthwhile locating. Advice, in store, is always available. Visit www.lidl.co.uk

FUN-PACKED EVENT RAISES FUNDS FOR LOCAL YOUNGSTER A great evening of singing and comedy hypnosis was held to raise valuable funds for Whittlesey youngster Bethany. Held at the Childers Social Club, thousands of pounds have been pledged and raised at the fund-raising event which was organised by Colin and Michelle Martin. It featured singer Dale Diamond, comedy hypnotist Dave Rawson, The Vinyl Revival and Kirat Inder Toor of Dominoes who supplied twenty pizzas free of charge. POPPY APPEAL NAMES LOCAL CHARITIES

After a very busy year, displays for the forthcoming Remembrance Sunday 2023 are nearing the final touches to the work. The local Poppy Appeal team hope the public will be impressed with the new and old displays, which have been worked on voluntarily by a very small team. To make this work worthwhile, it would like to help local charities with sponsorship money raised from the displays which will be placed around the town. This year the chosen charities will be, The Whittlesey Royal British Legion, The Whittlesey Army Cadets and The Whittlesey Boy Scouts. Loaded Spuds NOVEMBER NOSH

Simple comfort food doesn’t come in a finer form than a baked potato. Perfect after a cold night watching the fireworks! Stuff them with bacon, cheese and soured cream and dig in!

Method

1 Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Rinse the potatoes, then sprinkle all over with sea salt. Put the potatoes directly onto the oven shelf and bake for about 1 hour until crisp on the outside and soft inside when tested with a skewer. Serves 4

Ingredients

4 baking potatoes Sea salt for sprinkling 100g bacon lardons 80g unsalted butter, cubed 80g grated Cheddar, plus an extra 2 tbsp for topping 4 tbsp soured cream, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus extra to serve Sourced from www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk

2 Meanwhile, fry the bacon lardons in a non-stick frying pan until crisp. 3 Once the potatoes are ready, turn the oven to grill, remove the potatoes from the oven and transfer to a baking tray. Slice off the tops (hold the potatoes steady using a clean tea towel), then carefully scoop the soft potato centres into a bowl. Add the butter, 80g cheese and soured cream to the bowl and mix well. Stir in the chives and lardons, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the cheesy filling back into the potato shells, then top with the extra cheese. 4 Grill the potatoes for 10 minutes until golden and bubbling hot. Serve with the extra soured cream and chives.

Complete Relaxation

IS THE KEY TO ACHIEVING TRUE BALANCE In my role as a holistic therapist a huge portion of what I facilitate is to promote full and complete relaxation whether that be within a session or encouraging daily practice at home. Times of stress and tension can wreak havoc within our bodies, causing blood pressure to rise, palpitations, panic attacks, anxiety and anger. Prolonged exposure to this state can set up patterns which allow our bodies to malfunction. These can sometimes be experienced as things like digestive issues, lowered immune systems, headaches/migraines, stomach aches and perhaps feelings of hopelessness or depression or simply feeling low. None of these things are sustainable within the human body; eventually, something must give, and it can sometimes make us quite ill. However, if we learn how to regulate ourselves and not allow these unwanted feelings to develop, we can maintain a homeostasis within our minds and bodies which is wonderfully beneficial for us.

Bobalicious Cares for Local Dogs Dog lover Beverley Jones has set up a new business in the Whittlesey area to cater for the needs of our canine friends.

he has formed Bobalicious to provide a range of services to help people look after their pets.

Beverley provides one-to-one training, a pet taxi service, dog walking, ring craft classes and an agility area from her Doggy Day Care centre located on a three-acre site in Whittlesey Road, Benwick. The company name comes from the kennel title derived from her first St Bernard dog, called Bob. Beverley, who owns two St Bernards and two Cane Corsos herself, is fully qualified and insured. She said: “My first St Bernard was a great dog that I learned so much from and I wanted him to be remembered.

“We can take in around six to eight dogs each day either for full or half-days. Most of the people that use our facilities either do so because they have to through work or holiday commitments and we are also used by a lot of older dog owners. “We do a lot of dog walking and, since I moved here from Skegness and started the business seven months ago, people have been really kind. FENLAND VOLUNTEERS ARE HONOURED Dedicated volunteers who have helped nurture and transform Fenland over the past twelve months have been honoured. Fenland District Council held its annual celebration evening to recognise the positive impact the work of volunteers has on local communities. More than one hundred volunteers attended the event at March Braza Club with the highlight of the night being a special presentation with awards for the best voluntary projects over the past year. Cllr Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, who presented the awards, said: “The efforts of all our volunteer groups have once again been exceptional this year. Many groups go above and beyond litter picking, transforming neglected areas and buildings, enhancing wildlife, and promoting environmental sustainability. I can’t thank them all enough for everything they do.” The evening also included a talk from Tony Cook, of Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT), (who spoke about how the trust can support groups with wildflower establishment), a supper by Glam Grazing by Gem and live music from Bar Six. An award went to Whittlesey Street Pride for the Best Street Scene Project. It won the award for its help with the creation of a new woodland area at Yarwells Headland, a residential area in the town. The ‘Platinum Wood’ initiative was organised by Whittlesey Town Council as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy initiative, with support from Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT). More than one hundred trees were planted, with an area left for a future wildflower establishment. N OV E M BE R 2 0 2 3

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Hello again. To start on a sombre note; here we are in November once again with Remembrance Day on November 1tth which gives us the opportunity to show our respect to those who fought and continue to fight in conflicts throughout the world. This should not be a one-off occasion as we are reminded daily of the continuing conflicts via the media of television. This year there will be a short service at the War Memorial Queen Street commencing at 10.50am on Saturday, November 11th, to which anyone can attend. Please show your support on November 12th and join Whittlesey in its Act of Remembrance. The parade will leave St Andrew’s Parish Hall at 2pm to process to the War Memorial where the wreath laying ceremony will take place. Included within this ceremony there will be a short service at the War Memorial. There will not be a civic remembrance service at St Mary’s Church this year. Since my last article we have had the wonderful Whittlesey Festival where I had the privilege of opening the event and although it was covered very comprehensively in last month’s magazine, it would be remiss of me not to thank everyone involved in putting on such a great day. The town council met in August to discuss the structure and roles and responsibilities of the railway industry specific to Whittlesey. In September, a resolution was agreed to make representations to the Department of Transport, the MP for North East Cambridgeshire, the Mayor of the CPCA, the Leader of Cambs CC and to FDC to add our support to the campaign supporting the Ely North junction improvements and also to call for the capacity improvements at Ely North junction to include protection for the proposed increase in the stopping service between Peterborough and Ely from the existing 0.5 movements per hour each way to 1.0 movements per hour each way. It was also agreed to make representations to the operating companies Cross-Country Trains and East

Midlands Railways to increase the number of trains which stop at Whittlesea station. The town council had supported Peter Easterbrook and Thomas Cox in their fundraising to enable them to attend the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. Councillor Chris Boden and I attended a thank you event where we were told about the two years of fundraising events and training camps leading up to the event. Peter and Thomas returned home safely from the adventure. The first scarecrow festival was held in September and I was involved in judging the fancy dress competition, the best decorated cake and the tasting of the cakes... naughty but very nice! Again, I thank the organisers; all proceeds raised were for Defibrillators for All. I was also privileged to present the certificates and medals to the participants of this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. It is good to see so many children do still enjoy the scheme which is supported by the town council. This year, the numbers of young people that took part had increased by fifty percent to 196. Very well done to everyone that took part. Congratulations to Luke Turner who was elected to represent the Whittlesey North-West Ward at the by-election in September. Bee Green, Be Mobile, is a new business in Broad Street. Not just mobility scooters, but also all types of disability aids. It is great to see new businesses opening in the town – good luck Sean and Heidi. The Civic Service was held on Sunday October 1st at St Andrew’s Church. My thanks go to the Reverend Emily Davis for helping to put the service together. Thanks also go to the clergy of the Pathway Church in Whittlesey, the church wardens of St Andrew’s Church, the Rural Dean of March, the Reverend Andrew Smith, the Reverend Dr Langley Mackrell-Hey, Circuit Superintendent of the Methodist Church, Pastor Richard Bibby of the Whittlesey Christian Church, the choir and organist Paul Turner for taking part in the service. And finally, the next town council meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 16th, commencing at 7.30pm. All council meetings are public, so why not come along. ‘Til the next time, Kay Mayor

You can add well-rotted manure, which can be left on the surface and if you have acidic soil spread some lime over the surface and rake it in but not at the same time as adding manure. Alternatively, if you follow the “Nodig” method, now is the time to add a good layer of mulch: the worms will pull it down into the soil, which will help with aeration.

WORKING TO HELP SPORT AND THE ARTS IN FENLAND By Steve Barclay MP

egular readers will know how much I value and support the many grassroots sports clubs that we have in the constituency. We are fortunate to have such a range, run by some amazing volunteers, providing much valued facilities for our community. Wisbech St Mary Football Club is one such club with a large number of football teams playing each week. So, it was great to meet with Katie Critchley from Cambs FA, who does a huge amount to support our area, together with club officials Martin Holmes and Paul Albutt to discuss the club’s plans to install a new 3G football pitch. These pitches have the advantage that you can train on them for many more hours through the winter and provide a much-improved playing surface. I very much support the club in securing a 3G pitch and have been in touch with Fenland District Council regarding their planning application and will be working with the FA and Katie to ensure funding support. There are some great examples across a range of sports where together we have managed to leverage funding to upgrade community facilities. The new 3G pitch at Leverington Football Club, for example, has been a huge success and I hope we will see one under construction very soon at Wisbech St Mary. Following my arts roundtable meeting earlier this year, it’s great to see the collaboration across the constituency to encourage cultural progress. The

Fenland Cultural Fund is an excellent example that allows arts organisations in Fenland to bid for up to £2000 so support their activities. While we have some great examples of culture and heritage in the constituency, it’s also recognised that Fenland has scope to improve its cultural engagement and there’s more we can do to support opportunities for local communities and residents to access high-quality cultural experiences. This £23,000 fund should make a significant difference, allowing organisations to progress creativity and cultural offerings to new audiences, driving increased engagement and building on the existing talent we have. The fund will close to applications on November 20th so please get your bid in as soon as possible. When complete the site will include 221 new premises from two-bedroom semis up to four-bed detached homes. Finally, a plea to residents to have your say on where you can vote in Fenland District Council’s review of polling districts, places and stations. Voting is such a vital and important part of our democracy and this review seeks to ensure everyone has accessible and convenient facilities to vote from. Meanwhile, there is food waste going on and perfectly good food being emptied into landfills. This certainly applies when it comes to money troubles. What may appear to be a huge obstacle often feels more achievable once you’ve shared your concerns with a trusted friend or family member.

LIBRARY EVENTS Whittlesey Library has recently hosted two family events. Pendragon Circus paid a visit thanks to support from Whittlesey Town Council and spent the morning teaching fun skills while the library also hosted its most successful Summer Reading Challenge ever when the Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr Kay Mayor presented all the children with their certificates. SPORTED ADVISES LOCAL CLUBS Rob Danson, regional manager from Sported, has been giving advice and guidance to Whittlesey clubs who support young people. Sported is a charity which is funded by Sport England and therefore a free organisation for local clubs to access which could help them with marketing, publicity, fundraising and applying for grants. The festival also had its first ‘Shop Window Display’ competition this year. Tina Overton, secretary of the festival committee and organizer, said: “Our worthy winners of the £100 prize were the Market Street Emporium who made a colourful, eyecatching 1960s-1970s Festival Disco Psychology theme as their winning display. We look forward to more shops and businesses taking part next year.” The festival committee has thanked everyone who supported this year’s event, making it one of the best yet. Next year’s festival will be held on Sunday, September 8th.

FESTIVAL SCHOOLS ART COMPETITION WINNERS AND SHOP FRONT DISPLAY One of the most popular aspects of the Whittlesey Festival is the Schools Art Competition and this year was no exception. More than 480 people visited the exhibition on festival day which for the first time was held at the Whittlesey Library. Marija Lysak, committee member and organiser of the exhibition said: “The standard of work was absolutely superb with more than 150 entries from across all of the local schools. The judges including Jenny Parker, local artist James Green and myself had the privileged but difficult task of choosing the winners. “Thanks go to Jakki Racey manager of Whittlesey and Fenland Libraries for agreeing to extend the exhibition for an extra two weeks after the festival which enabled many more visitors to see it and to her staff who were always willing to give a helping hand when necessary. We look forward to working together next year.” The winners of the art competition were: Primary school category 4-7 years, 1 Alex Biba, Park Lane, 2 Lillian, New Road, 3 Alessa Laplace-Pinnell, Alderman Jacobs. Highly commended Willow Lowrie, Alderman Jacobs; 8-11 years, 1 Ava-Lilly, Coates, 2 Eva Jackson-Neal, Alderman Jacobs, 3 Caliyah Siziba, Park Lane. Highly commended Amie, New Road; Senior school category; Sir Harry Smith Community College 11-14 years category, 1 Maya Limas, 2 Tyler Atkin, 3 Eloise Moore. NEW CLUBS OPEN IN TOWN There are two new sports clubs in Whittlesey. Rookie Rollers Bowling Club is hosting free sessions every Thursday at the Indoor Bowls Sports Complex from 4.30pm to 6pm. Meanwhile Small Fry is a new fishing club for children, with sessions held on the Bower behind the Manor Swimming Pool on the last Saturday of the month.
