Welcome to your December issue...

D

ecember is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s round the corner of the new year.

We can think about what we’ve achieved in 2023; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and my new year resolutions are already in the planning stage! As the big day edges nearer, let’s hope that the Christmas lights in your area will bring much-needed cheer in what have sadly been, for many people elsewhere in the world, such traumatic times of late. Let us all hope that peace and reconciliation aren’t too far away in both Ukraine and the Middle East. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2024 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!

There is one strange sensation about getting older... life seems to speed up. This year has been no exception as it doesn’t seem twelve months since I wrote this column as we approached Christmas 2022. It has been another busy year for everyone at Discovering Magazines and I would like to take this opportunity to thank some people for their efforts throughout the year. Firstly, to my colleagues on the magazine who, believe me, always work tirelessly to bring you the best possible publication each month. Secondly, to the regular contributors who never fail to supply entertaining articles that I hope you all enjoy reading. Next, our advertisers whose support enables us to bring you a free magazine each month. And finally, to you, our readers. If it wasn’t for you there would be no Discovering Whittlesea. So, on behalf of all the team on the magazine I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas. See you in 2024...

Andy

Community

The Whittlesey Christmas lights have been lighting up the dark December nights for over 45 years. A small team of volunteers have continuously run the Christmas decorations for the town. The committee has seen many changes in members but all with the same goal of maintaining and improving the town’s display whenever and wherever it’s possible. All of this work would not be possible without the marvellous support of our town. Donations big and small from the Town Council, Whittlesey Charities, businesses, shops and the public make all the lights and displays you enjoy possible. We thank you all for your support. If anyone has any ideas, suggestions or would wish to get involved in any way, please feel free to contact us via the Lights Facebook page. Alternatively, please come and speak to us when we are working away in town.

There’s a wonderful example in the gospel – literally the momentous news – of the kindness and forgiveness of God. The Lord appeared to to His disciples and invited them to breakfast before He went to prepare a place for them in heaven. The disciples knew in their hearts that it was the Lord but they didn’t dare to ask!

On the cross, Jesus declared “it is finished”, that the way of reconciliation for man with God was now complete. But, before He returned to be with the Father, He appeared several times to His followers. After the shock of the cross, the disciples didn’t know what to do with themselves. They decided to go back to what they knew best – fishing! Seven of them , including Peter, Thomas, James and John took the boat out onto the Sea of Tiberias but they caught nothing all night. In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore and called to them “Guys, have you caught any fish?”. They replied that they had not, so Jesus told them to cast the net on the right sid of the boat, and they’d find some. They did, and then they couldn’t pull the net into the boat because of the weight of the fish! John realised who it was and said “It is the Lord!”. So Peter put his coat on and jumped straight out of the boat! The others brought the boat to shore, dragging the fish alongside. They saw a coal fire and fish cooking, and Jesus told them to bring some of the fish they’d caught. None of the disciples dared to ask who he was – but in their hearts they knew it was the Lord. He took the bread and the fish and served breakfast to them. To save himself from the mob after Jesus was sent to Pilate, Peter denied that he knew Jesus three times, as the Lord had told him that he would. So, on this third appearance, three times Jesus asked Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”. Peter said that he did, and Jesus asked him to “feed My sheep”. He was reaffirming His love and His call on Peter’s life, with each declaration of love cancelling out his denials of Christ.

C

This Christmas, let’s consider three truths of the Lord’s commitment to us, as we accept M and receive Him into our lives. Y The first truth is that the Lord knows us.CM He knows our hearts intimately. He knew that MY Peter would deny Him, but also knew Peter’s heart. He works with us every day of our livesCY in perfecting our faith. He knows what’s good for us and what’s harmful. We become able toCMY hear His voice, and can trust Him to provide K and protect on the path set before us. Second, He has left His peace with us. That includes all our welfare and needs. We do not have to worry about situations around us, or the uncertainties of life. As Jesus said, which of you by worrying can change anything. He is preparing a place for us in heaven and says to us that He would have told us if that was not true and certain. Third, He calls us to the ministry of reconciliation. What an amazing and fulfilling privilege, to bring people to their Saviour. We are called to love others, to feed and care for those who are yet to come into His fold. He reconfirmed that calling to Peter, and He gives to us to the same ministry.

WAYNE IS A LEADING LIGHT AT CHRISTMAS The Christmas lights display in Whittlesey is this year expected to be bigger and better than ever, thanks to the hard work of local man Wayne Gale and his team at Fenland Electrical Services. Whittlesey man Wayne has been responsible for putting up the lights and maintaining them for the past twenty years on behalf of the Whittlesey Lights Committee which has praised him for his sterling service. He said: “It usually takes us between a week and ten days to put them up and a further three days to take them back down. “We were asked to take on the responsibility of looking after the lights twenty years ago and have been doing it ever since. There have been a number of changes over the years, such as with the equipment, the introduction of LED lights, and the network and infrastructure. and we always aim to improve the display, year on year. “We do get a lot of help from volunteers and assistance from local businesses so it really is a team effort to make the display as attractive as possible..”

COUNCILLOR SURGERIES Councillor surgeries are held in Peel House at 8 Queen Street, Whittlesey from 9.30am-10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2023. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Hello again; we’re now preparing for Christmas, but I should first like to step back to November. “For the price that was paid, we must always remember, every day, every month not just in November”, I am writing this just days before the Remembrance weekend and Whittlesey is proud to be observing Remembrance throughout the town and villages. I thank the Poppy Blitz Team for their wonderful displays throughout the town over the Remembrance period. Just three ladies co-ordinated the displays but there were many more who, throughout the year were knitting and crocheting the poppies, and several more volunteers who helped complete and erect all the displays. A HUGE thankyou to you all. What a great achievement to have a life-sized horse, covered in approximately three thousand purple poppies to remember the animals that also contributed to the World Wars. This was designed and made by the Art & Design students at Peterborough College and was paid for by generous financial donations from several local sources. The RBL Poppy Appeal started with the Annual Band Concert which this year was held at Childers on Friday, October 27th. Thanks to Henry Clydesdale and the City of Peterborough Concert Band who so generously give their time every year. The Royal British Legion held its AGM on Sunday, November 5th; The Chairman is Lt Col A J Cattermole Retd (Tony). As with a lot of organisations the Royal British Legion is always looking for new members to support its work. Many of you probably do not know that it is not a requirement to have been in any of the forces to be a member of the RBL, so why not think about giving them some support? Meetings are held at Childers on the first Sunday of each month at 11am. Unfortunately, banking facilities in Whittlesey have been reduced further following the ram raid at Nationwide Building Society on October 28th. This is an ongoing police investigation. Can I highlight that banking facilities are available from

Whittlesey Post Office located in Keshco’s Broad Street store and there is a limited service available from Barclays at Whittlesey library. On Thursday, November 9th I was present at the Whittlesey St John Ambulance Cadets’ and Badgers’ Presentation Evening. Also present were the county district manager, president and vice president and youth lead. It was great to see the enthusiasm of these young people and applaud them on receipt of their certificates. Thanks should go to the youth leaders of the Whittlesey Unit. There are several Civic Carol Services already in the diary for December and of course we have our Christmas Extravaganza to look forward to on Saturday, December 9th, starting at 3.30pm. Please support this event along with St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival which starts on December 8th and concludes on Sunday 10th with a Service of Carols and Lessons in St Mary’s Church starting at 6pm. The next town council meeting is scheduled for Thursday 21 December, commencing at 7.30pm. Finally, it just remains for me on behalf of the town council to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year. See you in 2024! Kay Mayor

As the winter season sets in, it’s crucial to pay extra attention to your furry friend’s joint health. Dogs, like humans, can experience discomfort and stiffness in their joints due to the colder, damper weather. Here are some tips to help care for your dog’s joints during the winter and the benefits of animal physiotherapy in maintaining their health. Firstly, maintain your dog’s exercise routine. Although the weather might be cold, regular, moderate exercise is crucial for joint health. Take shorter but more frequent walks to prevent stiffness. Indoor activities, such as sniffing and searching for kibble or creating obstacle courses, can help keep your dog active. Provide them with a cozy bed to rest on, particularly after outdoor activities. Ensure they are wrapped up warm when out on a walk, to help protect their joints. A warm environment helps in preventing joint stiffness and discomfort. Consider providing joint supplements or adjusting their diet to include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can aid in reducing inflammation and promoting joint health.

18

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea

Regular vet check-ups are essential, especially during winter. A veterinarian can advise on specific joint care for your dog, prescribe supplements, and detect any joint issues early on. Consider animal physiotherapy as an integral part of joint care for your dog. Carried out by professionals, physiotherapy helps in relieving joint pain, improving mobility, and preventing further issues. Massage, hydrotherapy, and exercises designed for your dog's specific needs can significantly enhance joint health and overall well-being. Personalised plans aid in improving joint flexibility, muscle strength, and contributing to your dog’s comfort and happiness, particularly in the colder months. In conclusion, maintaining an active routine, providing proper nutrition, regular vet checkups, and considering the benefits of animal physiotherapy, you can significantly contribute to your furry friend's joint health and overall well-being during the colder months.

WAYS TO LIFT YOUR MOOD

During the Winter Months

A

s the winter months roll in, many people experience a dip in their mood due to factors such as less sunlight, colder temperatures, and limited outdoor activities. However, there are several effective ways to combat the winter blues and uplift your spirits. In this article, we will explore six strategies to help you boost your mood during the winter months. One of the primary reasons for feeling down during winter is the lack of sunlight. Make it a priority to spend time outdoors during daylight hours. Take a walk during your lunch break, sit by a sunny window, or open your curtains to let in natural light. If possible, consider using a light therapy box, which mimics natural sunlight and can help alleviate symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Physical activity is a powerful mood booster. Engage in regular exercise, whether it's indoor workouts, yoga, dancing, or even taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Exercise releases endorphins, which are known as ‘feel-good’ hormones. Find activities that you enjoy and make them a part of your daily routine. Consider joining exercise classes or trying out new winter sports like ice skating. Take time for yourself and prioritize self-care activities that bring you joy. Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as taking warm baths, reading a good book, or practicing meditation. Treat yourself to soothing aromatherapy with essential oils like lavender or citrus. Remember to get enough sleep and maintain a healthy diet, as these play a significant role in overall mood and well-being.

outings or meetups with loved ones when possible. Sharing laughter, support, Susie Munn and meaningful s conversations can provide a much-needed boost during the winter months. Find activities that bring you joy and engage your mind. Whether it's painting, playing an instrument, writing, or cooking, immersing yourself in creative pursuits can help uplift your mood. Engaging in activities that stimulate your creativity and bring a sense of accomplishment can boost your mood and provide a welcome distraction from the winter blues. If you find that your mood is persistently low and interfering with your daily life, it's essential to reach out for professional help. Consult with a therapist or counsellor who can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs. They can help you navigate through the challenges of the winter months and develop coping strategies to improve your mood and overall well-being. While winter can be challenging for many, implementing these strategies can help and promote a positive mindset during the colder months. Embrace natural light, stay active, practice self-care, connect with loved ones, engage in hobbies, and seek professional help when necessary. Remember, small steps towards self-care can make a big difference in brightening your winter days.

LADYSMITH WI SET TO PARTY It’s party time at the next meeting of Whittlesey Ladysmith WI, on Tuesday, December 12th, 7.30pm, at St Andrew’s Parish Hall. GOOD NEWS FOR LEISURE CENTRE FUNDING There’s been double good news for Fenland leisure centres with confirmation of lifeline government funding to offset excess energy costs - and the completion of a changing room refurbishment. Fenland District Council was successful in securing £191,000 from the Government’s Swimming Pool Support Fund, administered by Sport England, to offset the crippling energy costs faced by its Freedom Leisure-managed leisure centres in Fenland including Whittlesey. It is hoped the Sports England funding will offset the need for an agreed loan from Fenland District Council to Freedom Leisure to help it keep all four of its Fenland sites open and operating amid global increased energy costs that have led to some swimming pools elsewhere in the country closing. Cllr Alex Miscandlon, Fenland’s portfolio holder for leisure, said: “We value our leisure centres highly, knowing the importance of them for the health and wellbeing of our communities. “We will continue to strive to ensure good quality facilities are available to our communities in the most cost-effective way we can.” Fenland District Council continues to own Whittlesey's Manor Leisure Centre plus Chatteris Leisure Centre, March's George Campbell Leisure Centre, and Wisbech's Hudson Leisure Centre. Photo: Cllr Miscandlon at Whittlesey swimming pool, which, along with all Fenland District Council-owned pools, has qualified for government excess energy cost funding support 28

NEXT STEP IN DEVELOPING CASE FOR WHITTLESEY RELIEF ROAD

Long-term plans to tackle transport issues and boost economic growth in Whittlesey have taken a step forward as work begins on evidencing the need for a Whittlesey Southern Relief Road. Following the establishment of a Whittlesey Relief Road Project Board earlier this year, consultants Mott MacDonald have been appointed to lead the development of a Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC) for a relief road. The SOBC will examine a range of transport solutions to assess and determine whether the relief road is the best option and demonstrate the need for government funding to make it happen. Cllr Chris Seaton, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for transport and Project Board member, said: “We know problems with traffic flow and congestion are a frustration to many and a hurdle to the future prosperity of the town, but we’re determined to develop a robust case for the most appropriate solution.” The consultants will now work with Fenland District Council, Whittlesey Town Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) to draw up the SOBC. Public consultation and stakeholder engagement will form part of the project. It is intended that the business case will be completed by November 2024.

FOOD PANTRY IS NOW OPEN Helping Whittlesey Food Pantry is now up and running at the Falcon Hotel, London Street, Whittlesey. Thanks to community support, the aim of the pantry is to prevent out-of-date but edible food going to landfill. It is open on Thursdays at 11am-12noon and Sundays 5.30pm-6.30pm . Chair of Helping Whittlesey, Anna Foster has been delighted with the success so far. The Food Pantry is open to all members of the community. Photo: courtesy Robert Windle/RWT Photography

CHRISTMAS FAYRE RAISES VITAL FUNDS No Gain No Pain UK has organised another successful Christmas Fayre at the Eastrea Centre. The organisation has raised valuable funds for syringe drivers which are vital for those desperately in need. Each driver costs £1400, and NGNP UK has raised funds for 125 units to be in the community thanks to generous donations and fund-raising efforts. Photo: courtesy Robert Windle/RWT Photography

ECHOES OF THE 60S & 70S St Thomas' Church Pondersbridge was the venue for a tremendous night of instrumental music from the 1960s & 70s. Local group Echoes of the Past, which features Don Davison, Mark Woodward, John Wiltshire, Richard Batty and Paul Turner, played to a packed audience raising £725 for the church. It was the band’s debut and they went down a storm as they donated their time to the fund. Photo: courtesy Robert Windle/RWT Photography 36

A MONTH OF MILESTONES:

Cannon & Co Sales and Lettings Success Story In the fast-paced world of estate agency, finding the perfect match between property and buyer can be a challenge. Yet, at Cannon & Co, we've proven time and again that there's a buyer for every property, even those with unique circumstances.

T

his past month has seen us secure buyers for properties that had been on the market longer than expected, due to more challenging selling conditions with the property. It's a testament to our belief that there's a perfect fit out there for every home. You may recall from a previous article when we were recognised as one of the top twenty percent of estate agents for sales in the country and will be listed in the Best Estate Agent Guide 2024, we had the privilege of visiting London for the award ceremony. It was an inspiring experience to be surrounded by industry leaders and absorb a day full of invaluable knowledge. This recognition fuels our drive to constantly innovate and enhance our services. What sets us apart isn't just our achievements, but also our unique perspective. After a conversation with a prominent property developer in Peterborough, it became clear that Cannon & Co is a rarity in the area. Being one of the few woman-owned and operated agencies is a distinction we wear with pride. We believe this brings a fresh approach to the market, focusing on creating a comfortable

and personalised experience for our clients. Understanding your needs is at the heart of what we do, and it's a principle we hold dear. As we approach the New Year, now is the perfect time to start planning your property sale. Get in touch with us for a free, no-obligation valuation and let us help you get your property ready for a successful marketing launch in the upcoming year. Whether you're upsizing, downsizing, or simply seeking a change of scenery, Cannon & Co are here to guide you every step of the way. In conclusion, the past month has been a whirlwind of success and learning for Cannon & Co. Our dedication to finding the right buyer for every property, coupled with our unique perspective in the market, sets us apart. We're excited to continue our journey, bringing exceptional service to our clients in Whittlesey and beyond. • Don’t feel pressured into a quick sale. Look for local items so you can check them – and meet the seller – before you pay. • Fraudsters may want to pay by bank transfer. Never pay by bank transfer. Pay by debit or credit card to protect your money. • Even though a seller may be recommended, having good reviews and followers doesn’t make them genuine. Meet them in person and a genuine seller will let you pay in a way that protects your money.

Buying online has never been easier and one of the most popular sites is Facebook Marketplace. But, sadly, the more popular the methods of buying and selling, the more appealing to the scammers. With the Christmas shopping season here, many of us are looking for a bargain – but how do you know if your seller is genuine? Here are some tips:

D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea

• Fraudsters are very careful to take the time and effort to set up a fake sale – even for low value items. They may try and tempt buyers with items that are sold out or rare. It is better to pay a little more to a genuine seller than to lose your money. • If you are thinking about buying from a website or company you are unfamiliar with, visit a review site like Trustpilot and look at the experiences of other consumers. Reporting scams on Facebook Marketplace 1 Report the listing. Find the specific Marketplace listing you want to report and follow the onscreen instructions. 2 Report the user. Go to the Facebook profile of the user you want to report. Click on the “…” or ‘More Options’ link, usually under their cover photo. Select “Find support or report” and follow the instructions. 3 Record all conversations. Before reporting a user or scam, make sure to save or screenshot any suspicious conversations or transactions. 4 Contact the police, especially if you’ve lost money or an item with substantial value. 5 Submit feedback to Facebook. If you experience a scam or see a potential loophole that might be exploited by fraudsters, it’s a good idea to provide feedback. Check out Facebook’s official guidelines for staying safe while using Facebook Marketplace (https://www.facebook.com/help/ 1156544111079919), so you can avoid scams. Wishing you a safe and peaceful Christmas. DE CE M BE R 2 0 2 3

SAVING MONEY ON ENERGY By Eamonn Dorling

H

eating homes significantly contributes to greenhouse gases because generating energy and using fossil fuels emits CO2 in most instances. Transport, food production, and industry also contribute, and reductions will help. Raising awareness and removing/reducing barriers to improving thermal efficiency is an area many families can benefit from because a decrease in energy bills can save money.

to excessive weather events, rising sea levels or pollution. For an independent view on moving to low-carbon living, the following website has valuable information available: https:// cambridgecarbonfootprint.org/who-we-are/

There is funding available to help improve thermal efficiency. Many homeowners are unaware unless they have had a survey recently, maybe in pursuing a mortgage application). You can conduct your own (see link) or have a professional assessment. https://www.energy. gov/energysaver/do-it-yourself-home-energyassessments

Expertise is available if you know someone who wants to reduce their energy consumption. If someone is considering the replacement of their boiler – funding may be available. If access to a thermal imaging camera will help, some are available across the county.

Another way is to borrow a thermal imaging camera. A thermal camera will clearly show whether areas are leaking heat, an issue that could be rectified by simple draft exclusion or additional insulation. There can be knockon effects, such as ensuring that adequate ventilation is maintained to reduce the build-up of moisture – if in doubt, seek advice.

Cambridgeshire Councils has secured more than £11.5m of central government funding. If the funds are not invested locally – they will be deployed elsewhere in the county (Peterborough is not part of this initiative).

If money is saved by improving thermal efficiency, you will also have a smaller carbon footprint. The reduced expenditure could reduce liabilities, protect your income, or be invested for later. Reducing greenhouse gases can aid the reversal of climate change. Low-lying Cambridgeshire must not become a casualty

GET INVOLVED IN FENLAND AIR QUALITY TESTING Fenland residents can get involved in air quality testing in Fenland by suggesting sites that should be monitored. Fenland District Council undertakes ongoing testing to ensure the air in the district continues to remain compliant with national air quality objectives. Residents are invited to suggest sites where they feel regular exposure to traffic pollution to help ensure testing is being carried out at the most at-risk areas and any issues are highlighted and can be tackled. An additional air quality sensor has been installed in Whittlesey to support monitoring there where there have been local concerns due in part to the impact of new major housing developments, haulage yards and industrial processes. Fenland District Council continues to work closely with consultees for permit and planning applications of air quality significance for developments including road improvements and housing developments. To suggest an area for air monitoring, please provide the nearest address, coordinates, ‘what three words’ location or a description with a nearby landmark via email on envhealth@fenland. gov.uk or call (01354) 654321 9am-4pm (Monday to Friday) and 9am-noon (Saturday).
