Discovering Whittlesea issue 242, September 2024

Page 1

Welcome to your September issue...

It’s “back to school time” for many, and “nights pulling-in time” for all.

I hope your summer proved enjoyable, relaxing and, just like this magazine, full of excitement and interest! Time now to take a deep breath, look ahead and wonder why Christmas presents should already be on show in the shops! Before you go any further, however, and start making lists of who will get what eighteen weeks from now, just relax with your favourite magazine...and enjoy the month ahead.

They say age makes one become grumpier, but I don’t think that’s true, in my opinion it is not the advancing years that darken my mood it’s modern-day technology.

Now although I’m ancient enough to have been taught both the Imperial and metric systems, I am not a Luddite. Publishing was one of the first industries to use computers so I’m pretty clued-up on technology, although I admit I am so old I remember when mobile phones were used to actually speak with one another.

For the past few weeks, or even months, I have tried unsuccessfully to activate a supermarket card, yet every time I try to do so, I fail. Following instructions, I enter my email address, type in my password – remembering to use upper and lower-case letters and numbers etc – and then am informed that, after showing me the last three digits of my mobile number, I will be sent a code... however it never arrives.

I have tried to do this on numerous occasions and have even foolishly phoned them leaving me hanging on for what seemed hours and then giving up after deciding it was better to waste my time by doing something else I hate, like watching the latest reality show on TV.

Consequently, I have now decided to accept defeat and continue to pay 10p extra for my favourite can of baked beans and 20p for my preferred chocolate bar...

Watercress Salad SPICY BEEF AND

Ingredients

For the salad (serves 2):

1 bunch watercress, torn into pieces

1 small onion, thinly sliced

1 tomato, deseeded and thinly sliced

300g beef sirloin, trimmed

Pinch of salt

1tsp black peppercorns, crushed

1 red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced

For the dressing:

2tbsp white wine vinegar

1tbsp vegetable oil

1tsp sugar

This tasty salad is quick to prepare and the beef and watercress make a great combination.

Method

1 To make the dressing, place all the dressing ingredients in a bowl and stir well, until the sugar is dissolved.

2 Put the watercress, onion, and tomato in a mixing bowl, add the dressing and toss the salad. Set aside.

3 Coat the steaks with the peppercorns and season with a little salt. Cook under a hot grill for 6-8mins, turning once until medium rare. Set aside for 2 mins to rest and cool slightly.

4 Thinly slice the beef and add to the salad bowl, mix it all together well.

5 Serve immediately and garnish with the sliced chilli.

SPONSORED BY THE SHED SHOP

Now is the time to lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold, damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop. Onions should be kept in the light, and you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed.

On the other hand, potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting. Store in hessian or paper sacks and check from time-to-time in case any are rotten as they will have a swift effect on the good tubers. It is a good idea to fork the ground over within a few days of lifting your potatoes as any tubers left will sprout next year and become a reservoir for disease and potato blight spores.

If you haven’t already made a composter now is a good time as the summer harvest comes to an end there will be plenty of plant debris which can be composted ready to condition the soil next spring. You can leave the roots of runner beans and peas in the ground as the nodules contain nitrogen. Do not forget to add “brown” materials such as autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, eggshells and sweetcorn husks. The proportion of “greens” to “browns” should be 50/50 and no dairy products, meat or fish or non-degradable materials.

September is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand

the winter or are fast growing. Some examples are:

• Lamb’s lettuce, oriental leaves, winter lettuces, spinach and onion sets.

• Planting broad beans in the autumn is an effective way to avoid blackfly as they crop earlier.

• Both radishes and turnips are fast growing.

A few jobs that need doing include:

• Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms(1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Harvest apples and pears.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation – leaving it to rot on the soil may spread diseases.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

• Sow “green manures” such as field beans, annual rye grass, winter mix or phacelia, which overwinter and can be dug in the ground next spring before they flower. The plants reduce nutrient leaching from the soil by winter rains and play a useful part in improving soil fertility.

• Apply nematodes to control slugs and snails while temperatures are still mild. Moist weather gives the best results.

• Feed all late crops with a general fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure.

Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Why Choosing a Whittlesey Estate Agent is Key to Selling Your Home Tania

If you're considering selling your home, making the right choice of estate agent can significantly impact your experience and the final sale price. For homeowners in Whittlesey, opting for a local estate agent is not just a preference – it's a strategic decision that can lead to remarkable results.

At our agency, we've consistently seen success with properties in the Whittlesey area. We have a number of properties that have received offers, with many meeting or exceeding the asking price. This success isn't by chance; it's the result of our deep knowledge of the local market and our ability to address potential buyers' concerns effectively. One common issue we've encountered is properties listed with out-of-town agents struggling to sell. These agents often lack the local knowledge and availability to conduct thorough viewings. For instance, previously we took over the sale of a property that had been with an out-oftown agent for some time without success. When potential buyers travelled an hour to view the house, they initially questioned its value, mistakenly comparing it to properties in Peterborough. I spent an hour and a half with them, explaining Whittlesey's unique qualities and why it stands apart from other areas. Two days later, they made a full-price offer – something the previous agent failed to achieve.

Another experience involved a buyer who almost cancelled a viewing due to concerns about floodplains, which they had read about online.

After a detailed conversation addressing his concerns, they went ahead with the viewing and ended up making an offer.

Local agents have the advantage of personal experience — they can provide insights into local schools, crime rates, and community events because they live in the area themselves. Whether it's the annual Straw Bear Festival or Music on the Square, a Whittlesey agent can paint a vivid picture of life in the town, which resonates with buyers.

If you're ready to discuss how we can help you sell your home in Whittlesey, don't hesitate to reach out at (01733) 641030 or office@cannonandco.uk Your home deserves the best, and that starts with choosing the right agent.

ONLY DAYS TO GO UNTIL THE WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL

With only days to go until the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday, September 8th, organisers say they can guarantee you a brilliant day out. There’s a full programme of music, dance, entertainment, classic vehicles, stalls and attractions with something for all the family from 10am-4pm.

The festival starts with a parade from Broad Street at 10am and will wind its way along Market Street to the Market Square and the organisers would like to encourage as many as possible to line the route to cheer and wave flags before the Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr Alex Miscandlon performs the official opening .

One of the headline acts this year is The Royal British Legion Band & Corps of Drums Romford, one of the longest running independent youth bands in the UK today. It is one of the most successful traditional youth marching bands on the contest field in the UK, boasting eleven world titles from The World Music Championships (the Olympics of bands), which are held in Kerkrade, Netherlands, and numerous other titles. The average age of the band members is seventeen although the youngest is just nine years old. Leading the band is director Ian Yeoman, who was awarded the British Empire Medal by Her Majesty the Queen in 2014 for his services to the organisation.

Although called the ‘Royal British Legion’ Band & Corps of Drums Romford, the band is totally selffunded. It carries the names of the Royal British Legion with pride and promotes it wherever it performs. This includes The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, The Royal Tournament, Wembley Military Pageant, the Queen’s Birthday Parade in London, to name a few. It has played and performed at various European events and even at the Rochester International Marine Tattoo in New York State.

COUNCIL SUPPORTS ARMED FORCES COMMUNITY

Fenland District Council has reconfirmed its commitment to supporting the Armed Forces Community with the signing of its own district covenant.

The authority has long been committed to being supportive of the Armed Forces Community and by signing its own Armed Forces Covenant, superseding the 2011 Armed Forces Community Covenant, has now developed support and actions that align with all service areas across the council.

The covenant states that the council will ensure members of the Armed Forces Community don’t face disadvantages arising from their service in the provision of public and commercial services. And, in some circumstances, special provision may be justified, especially for those who have given the most, such as the injured or bereaved.

HELPING TO STAY SAFE

Whittlesey Library continues to provide information to keep residents safe. It recently hosted a special session with community safety groups including the Bobby Scheme and Neighbourhood Watch and much more as the stall holders gave advice and guidance to those who attended.

GET YOUR BINS OUT ON TIME...

Fenland residents are being reminded to ensure their bins are ready for collection by 7am to avoid being caught out by some collection schedule changes.

From the end of August, some residents, who have been used to their blue bins being collected later in the day, will have seen them being collected earlier. This change is due to a necessary switch to blue bin waste being tipped in a different location in Fenland prior to onward transport for sorting and then recycling.

Refuse teams will continue to work from 6.30am to 3.30pm to get bins collected. On collection days, bins should be presented as early as possible and before 7am.

Find your bin collection day at www.fenland. gov.uk/bins or use the Fenland Bins app.

REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF SIR HARRY SMITH

Whittlesey WI ladies enjoyed a most interesting and informative talk by Maureen Watson on the life of Sir Harry Smith who was born in Whittlesey in 1787. Sir Harry was educated in the schoolroom at St Mary’s Church and borrowed £100 from his father, a surgeon, to buy his commission in the Army as a young man where he served for fifty-four years, fighting in the Napoleonic wars of 1812 and many other battles and wars throughout the world. He met and married his Spanish wife Juanma Maria in 1812 and died in London in 1860. He and his wife are buried in the St Mary’s Church cemetery, Whittlesey.

At September’s meeting the speaker will be Jane Sills who will talk about Ramsey Walled Garden. Ladies are welcome to join for the meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd at 7.30pm in St. Andrew’s Parish Hall, Parkinson Lane, Whittlesey.

PREDICTIONS FOR THE NEXT UK BUDGET

There is a view that when the UK administration changed, matters were worse than predicted during the election process. This is not an unusual situation. In May 2015, Liam Byrne, chief secretary to the treasury under Gordon Brown, left a note for his successor saying that there was no money.

Whatever the situation in 2024, it is unlikely that there will be a giveaway budget to the taxpayer. This is complicated by the new administration's assurances that some taxes (National Insurance, Income Tax, and VAT) would not be increased if they formed the new government.

The chancellor may leave some taxes unchanged, but there are many taxes and several ways to make them bite harder without changing the headline rate. For example, leaving tax-free thresholds level when the rate of inflation (pensions or wages), rises may mean that a more significant proportion of income may be subject to existing tax rates.

Another target might be to concentrate on Capital Gains Tax (CGT). It has been speculated that landlords might be a focus for the chancellor, and no assurances were given regarding this tax. So, if your pension plan was a buy-to-let property, it might be a good idea to consider using a pension arrangement that is subject to what might become the taxes of choice. Even using the existing CGT framework and the intention to align rates with Income Tax

Delivering Simple Financial Advice - that really works

(20%, 40% and 45%), there are options for the chancellor.

There is another dynamic: If the Government aims to provide more affordable housing, creating a glut of property sales could help provide more purchasing opportunities without having to build them — just a thought.

If you are thinking about accumulating funds for retirement, a pension plan might remain a good option. Consider what your employer provides, and if you are self-employed, speak with an independent financial adviser about planning for the future.

Five Convincing Scams You Will Want to Avoid

Have you ever read about victims of scams handing over their life savings and thought ‘that will never happen to me’? Even unskilled fraudsters can now create sophisticated ads, seen and shared by tens of thousands on social media platforms, or mimic the websites, phone numbers and email addresses of genuine businesses.

Along with Which?, Safe Local Trades is aiming to raise awareness of these scams.

1) Hijacked holiday bookings

Weak hotel email and booking systems are being targeted by hackers to send troublingly plausible messages to holidaymakers.

Once they’ve gained access to the systems of hotels and B&Bs, they’re armed with guests’ contact and booking details, and can send fake messages, texts or emails. Typically, messages claim there’s a problem with your payment, before asking you to ‘verify’ or ‘update’ your card details on phishing sites designed to look like Booking.com.

2) Fake phone and broadband providers

Here the scammers may try to convince you that you’re owed a refund, offer new equipment to fix nonexistent connection issues, or entice you with offers to upgrade your package, reduce bills or claim loyalty deals. A nasty trick is to ask you to share your screen, by downloading ‘remote access’ software.

Never disclose financial information over the phone.

3) Fake ads and rip-off subscriptions

You might be bombarded by sneaky subscriptions hidden in misleading ads. Which? reports some victims were paying as much as £50 a month to companies they had never heard of. Many have faced a battle to get a refund from their card provider, because payments appeared to be ‘authorised’.

4) Your bank account drained in minutes

Which? was the first to raise the alarm earlier this year about e-money firm Revolut and account takeover fraud (when criminals hack into financial accounts to make unauthorised transfers).

All the victims were reported to be experienced business owners, including one who lost £165,000 in an hour and another who lost £40,000 in ten minutes. None have been reimbursed.

5) Investment fraud

Investment scammers stole an average of nearly £13 million per week from almost 100,000 victims in 2020-23, according to data from Action Fraud.

Sadly, many households are being drawn into bogus investments and ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes run by criminal gangs.

HELP SOUGHT TO SECURE FUNDS FOR SPORTS PITCHES

Proposals are being prepared for four small multisport pitches in Fenland including one in Whittlesey. Fenland District Council is working with the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation on proposals to improve, or create from scratch, new games areas for multiple sports called Playzones.

The council must submit evidence of how the pitches will be used to secure funds from the Football Foundation PlayZones Programme and ensure the right facilities go in the right places. Depending on the finish chosen, which would be partially decided based on survey results, PlayZones can be used for multiple sports, potentially including recreational football, netball, cricket, basketball, hockey and rugby. PlayZones are fenced and floodlit.

Cllr Alex Miscandlon, the council’s portfolio holder for leisure, said: “We’ve chosen the proposed locations, carefully based on land that can be made available for them, where we think there’ll be valuable to local communities and sites that we believe can meet the funding criteria.

“We now want to hear from our communities to help us show the appetite for these facilities and help us decide the correct surfaces to use if they go ahead to make them as useful as possible for the sports and activities people want to use them for.”

The sites being considered include Whittlesey’s Manor Leisure Centre, Station Road, PE7 1UA, a new 20m x 30m PlayZone in the grounds of the leisure centre, plus one in March and two in Wisbech.

The district council is asking anyone with an interest in the proposed new pitches to complete a survey at: www.fenland.gov.uk/PlayZonesSurvey People have until the end of Sunday, September 8th to complete the survey.

WHITTLESEY HOSTS TALK ON ‘BRITAIN’S POMPEII’

Whittlesey has dug deep into its ancient past at a free history talk.

Residents recently enjoyed a fascinating talk led by Mark Knight from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Archaeology and excavation director of Whittlesey’s late Bronze Age settlement, Must Farm.

Mark shared the story of the prehistoric site at the Manor Leisure Centre event and told how it is helping archaeologists to understand how people were living in the Fens almost three thousand years ago.

Described as ‘Britain’s Pompeii’, the settlement was made up of wooden houses on stilts above the River Nene and was less than a year old when it was destroyed by fire. It collapsed into muddy

time for a young mum during the day so a little retail therapy on the High Street can be a life saver. Also, it’s nice to be able see and feel the quality of what you’re buying which you don’t get when you buy online.

Diane Pulford, of Scruples, said: “I remember taking my son to town to get that special outfit for him – we were going to a wedding – afterwards, we went for an ice cream, to make it fun day for him and me. You don’t realise this until you get older and the grandchildren arrive.

“Shopping today needs to be a fun time, not a chore and you need to feel that you can have a mooch with friends and catch up on the local gossip, which I hope we have accomplished and I hope you all enjoy shopping in Scruples as much as I have enjoyed putting it together.

“We are also open to your suggestions for new things to bring into the shop, after all this is a shop for you and your family.”

river silt, preserving thousands of artefacts and revealing the surprisingly sophisticated lives of the Bronze Age Fen people.

Their eel traps and fish weirs were the same design as those made today, and a necklace with beads from as far away as Iran uncover a far-flung trading network.

The talk was organised by Cllr Elisabeth SennittClough, ward councillor for Whittlesey and chair of Fenland District Council’s Culture, Arts and Heritage (CAH) Committee, and Cllr Alex Miscandlon, a fellow Whittlesey ward councillor and Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for leisure.

Cllr Sennitt-Clough said: “I’m delighted we were able to get Mark to come to Whittlesey and give this fascinating talk. It really put the Fens into historical context, at the centre of trade, construction and architecture.”

offers a complete service

Glyn Jones Auctions has added to the professional services it can now offer its customers with estate agency being introduced alongside house clearances, auctions and removals – making it a complete one-stop property shop for householders and businesses.

Owner Glyn said: “We added estate agency to our business in January this year after I had been approached by people wanting to know if we did it. We previously offered house clearances, auctions and removals and this was like a puzzle, putting all the pieces together to provide a full service.

“Back in the 1980s and 1990s it was all about people offering a specialist service, but I am old school and I wanted to put everything back in one box so that people could get the whole range of services from one source.

“All four things are connected so I have spent the last two years getting the qualifications I need to act as an estate agent.”

Glyn started out in 1976 with buying and selling antiques and collectors’ pieces at auctions and over the subsequent decades has worked in a variety of fields from exporting furniture to overseas markets including America, Australia and New Zealand, to running a factory making pine furniture, and carrying out house clearances and working at an auction house.

This experience led him to start Glyn Jones Auctions which is based on the Springwater Business Park in Station Road, Whittlesey, from where it services the requirements of customers from all over the country.

The company prides itself on the professional services it can offer, giving a full, confidential, discreet and honest service, whether you need to dispose of an estate, however large or small, arrange a clearance, or if you are looking to buy or sell at one of its auctions or sell your property.

Glyn added: “I aim to give an honest, professional service. For example, we do not offer a cheap house clearance service like some people do and then dump the waste illegally, we deal with everything properly and adhere to all the legal requirements for disposal.”

He has also served in the British Army as a TA solider, taking part in a peacekeeping tour of Bosnia and Herzegovina; something that he says gave him the discipline and attention to detail that has stayed with him.

WHITTLESEY RIFLE CLUB PRESIDENT HAS GOLD IN HIS SIGHTS

Whittlesey Rifle Club has called on everyone in the town to support and cheer on its president Matt Skelhon as he aims for Paralympic Gold in Paris this month.

Matt (39) learned to shoot at the club before famously winning a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, followed by silver and bronze at London 2012. After a tough few years with no medals at the subsequent games, he has fought his way back to form and is representing Team GB in Paris.

Matt will compete in the R3 10m air rifle prone contest on September 1st and on September 5th he will be taking part in the outdoor R6 50m rifle prone competition, where he is both European and world champion, which also helped secure his Paralympic team selection.

He said: “I know I haven’t won a medal for a couple of Games but I am not going to put any more pressure on myself this time. I just need to be confident in my preparation and rely on my skills.”

Whittlesey Rifle Club disability officer, the writer and actor David Proud, said: “Everyone at the club is

incredibly proud of Matt’s achievements. He is a fantastic role model for the sport. We will all be rooting for him as he heads for Paris.”

Club chairman Andy Surtees added: “Everyone in the club is willing Matt on and we know he will do his utmost against elite opposition. His competitions will be televised and we hope to hold supporters’ events if there is enough local interest. Our club members will certainly be cheering him on. Please follow our website and Facebook posts for timings and updates. Seeing strong local support will really give him a boost.”

Whittlesey has had a rifle club in the town for around one hundred years and the current club building, which was built by Fenland District Council, has been run by volunteers as a community amateur sports and social club for nearly fifty years. If you would like to follow Matt’s progress and/or are interested in trying target sports, you can find details on Facebook or via the club’s website. All ages and abilities are welcome.

MATILDE IS A TWO-TIME WINNER

The annual David Combes Innovation Award has been presented for the second time to 17-year-old Matilde Sousa, a worthy winner from Sir Harry Smith Community College, Whittlesey.

The Rotary Club of Whittlesey introduced the award last year to honour the late David Combes, who was a devoted member of the club and served as president several times and also founded the innovative local company Lawgistics, which has grown to become the largest automotive legal consultancy in the UK.

The award is given annually to a student from Sir Harry Smith Community College who shows promise as an innovator in their work. There were five finalists this

year and it was a close-run contest, but the judges felt Matilde’s detailed plan for an American diner inspired business, created from adapted reuse of an existing local site, showed community focus, encouraging socialising across all age groups as well as demonstrating innovative marketing. The all-age entertainment strategy also made the business plan idea more resilient.

Whittlesey Rotary Club president Jim Saunders said: ‘’The youth of the town are our future and we want to encourage them to have innovative positive thinking to take us all in the right direction.”

Winner Matilde, who attended the ceremony with her mother and sister, said: “Winning the award is unexpected and I am really proud and pleased to receive it. I hope to set up a business and work for myself in the future.”

Judge Joel Combes, managing director of Lawgistics and son of David Combes, said it was a great pleasure to present the award to Matilde, which embodied the spirit of innovation David championed.

He added: “We hope this recognition encourages you to continue your innovative work and inspires others to follow in your footsteps. The world needs innovators like you to help make it a better place.”

MICROWAVE THERAPY FOR SKIN

Microwave energy is widely used in a number of medical fields to elevate tissue temperatures and create precise, localised cell destruction.

Infected tissue can exist several millimetres below the surface and can often be difficult to treat using traditional methods, resulting in either untreated tissue or significant damage.

Swift delivers a precise, highly controlled energy dose. As microwaves travel into the tissue, water molecules begin colliding and creating localised heat energy – quickly destroying all infected tissue within a predetermined depth.

In just seconds the treatment is complete, leaving the body to absorb and replace the treated tissue.

Understanding anxiety and how to overcome it with EFT

Anxiety is a common emotional response that can manifest as feelings of unease, worry, or fear. It can be triggered by various factors, including stress from work, relationships, or significant life changes. While it's normal to experience anxiety occasionally, chronic anxiety can interfere with daily life, making it essential to find effective coping strategies. One of the most effective tools to overcome anxiety is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as tapping. Before diving into EFT, it’s crucial to understand what anxiety is and the effect it has. Anxiety can present itself in various forms, including generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias. Symptoms may include:

For step-by-step guide to EFT (Tapping) please visit susiemunns.com/tappingat-home

Benefits of EFT for Anxiety

EFT offers several benefits for those struggling with anxiety: Quick relief – many people experience immediate relief from anxiety symptoms after just a few rounds of tapping.

Self-empowerment – EFT is a self-help technique that allows people to take control of their emotional well-being.

Excessive worrying, irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating, or trembling. Anxiety can be overwhelming, but recognising its presence is the first step toward managing it effectively.

What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a holistic healing technique that combines principles of acupuncture, psychology, and talk therapy. EFT involves tapping on specific points on the body, primarily meridian points, while focusing on the negative emotions or thoughts causing distress. The underlying principle is that tapping helps release emotional blockages and restore balance to the body's energy system.

How EFT Works

EFT operates on the premise that negative emotions contribute to physical and emotional distress. By tapping on specific acupressure points while voicing your feelings, you can help clear these blockages.

Non-invasive – Unlike some traditional therapies or medications, EFT is gentle and can be practised anywhere without any special equipment. Holistic approach – EFT addresses both emotional and physical aspects of anxiety, promoting overall wellbeing.

Understanding anxiety is the first step toward managing it effectively.

I lived with anxiety for years in my twenties, I had no idea what was wrong with me and honestly thought I had a heart condition. Until I did my initial EFT training and joined all of the dots together. I was mugged a few months before I started to feel anxious; I thought I was ‘fine’ with the event at the time, even turning away the offer of victim support.

If you're struggling with anxiety, consider incorporating EFT into your self-care routine, and do not hesitate to seek professional help if needed. Remember, you are not alone, and there are tools available to help you navigate your journey toward emotional freedom and peace.

Get in touch for a free consultation, to find out how I can help you overcome anxiety.

ANGLERS REST HAPPY ON THE BOWER

It was a special day on Whittlesey’s Bower just behind the cricket field as the official opening of the brandnew fishing platforms took place.

Funded by the National Lottery, Environment Agency, plus support from the Whittlesey & District Lions Club and Whittlesey Round Table, the platforms are for community use with priority given to youngsters and those less able. Deputy Lieutenant Rizwan Rahemtulla, representing King Charles III, officially declared the platforms open with the Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr Alex Miscandlon assisting. Platform project lead Robert Windle was delighted with the event. He said: "This was the culmination of ten months of work by Friends of the Manor and Whittlesey Sports Association and with the newly formed Whittlesey Small Fry Youth Fishing Club taking the lead for youth fishing, we see them as the primary users. We thank Mr Rahemtulla for attending and also having a go, he even caught a fish."

Sponsors and supporters include: Whittlesey & District Lions Club; Whittlesey Round Table; Charlie Kitchin; JCH (Groundworks) Aggregates; A.R.C Welding; Allied Ecology Ltd; Friends of the Manor Community Group; Whittlesey Sports Association; Tony Rayner; Fenland District Council and Middle Level Commissioners.

COMMUNITY HUB BECOMES A REALITY

Three Whittlesey groups have come together as part of the Whittlesey Community Hub plans. They held an open meeting in July to share progress and plans and encourage others in the community to get involved through volunteering opportunities.

Whittlesey Athletic Football Club, Helping Whittlesey and Phoenix Youth Provision are all active programmes in the town which have the community and volunteers at their heart; they all have plans moving forward and recognised the benefits of working together to grow.

Gary Munns, director of the Whittlesey Community Hub, said: “WAFC have plans and ambitions for their site both for adult and children’s sports activities and also community benefit. This is a great step forwards in providing an effective community hub to create a stronger, more connected community and benefit of as many local people as possible.”

Anna Foster, Helping Whittlesey chair, said anyone interested in volunteering, especially for the re-use and repair hub, are asked to please get in touch. She also added that the original community pantry on the site of the Falcon will remain with improved storage, and this will provide a second site to allow it to reach more people and more space to develop new projects and initiatives. Last month, the Coates Community Cabin was also launched on the site of Coates Primary School.

JLet not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me

esus spoke to His disciples about the last days before His return, just before His ministry on earth came to an end at the cross. He warned them and warns us not to be deceived by false messengers, leading us astray. He spoke of wars and commotions between nations and states, of famines, earthquakes and pandemics, and of rising distress and perplexity, and fear of the terrors coming on the earth. He spoke of violence inflicted upon the Jews and their neighbours. We are seeing these things beginning to unfold in our time. Jesus speaks to us of the need to be at peace, and not to be overcome by fear. He is saying to us that we should put our trust in God.

Trusting in God

Jesus said:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. ”

John 14:1 (NKJV)

In the original Greek bible text, the word PISTEUŌ translated as “believe” also carries the meaning to be persuaded of, to place confidence in, and to trust.

Jesus asks us to rely absolutely upon Him through all of life’s trials.

He loves us perfectly, and no turn of events takes Him by surprise. We see natural evidence of things that happen to us and around us; but we have to learn to pray and trust, to see evidence in the spiritual realm.

Jesus Knows Us Perfectly

Jesus saw the anxious looks on the faces of His followers as He spoke of His imminent departure from the earth. He knows about our secret sorrows and our invisible wounds. He’s aware of not only our afflictions, but also how they affect us, and how near they are to our hearts. Let’s consider the three words:

Let not your heart be troubled: We shouldn’t allow ourselves to become so troubled so as to be thrown into a state of confusion, like a troubled sea. He didn’t say to pretend the storm isn’t happening, or not to feel sad about it, but that we shouldn’t lose our composure, nor be unsettled–“by your patience, possess your souls”

Luke 21:19 (NKJV)

Let not your heart be troubled: In the bible, the heart is the seat of our life and strength; so whatever we do, we have keep disturbance from our hearts, to protect our heart with all diligence and care. So, even if all the country or the whole world is in turmoil, our hearts must not be disturbed.

Let not your heart be troubled: Jesus is speaking to us, who have given our lives to following Him, hearing and keeping His word. We were chosen by Him, purchased, and made perfect in the sight of God, for all of eternity. On earth we are His representatives, and need to be functional, and have peace of mind, when everyone else is losing theirs!

You are very welcome to visit us on Sunday mornings at 10:45am in Broad Street. We would be delighted to welcome you to be part of our church!
