The Wisbech and Fenland Museum: A Personal View

by Aldo Ierubino, Art Historian The merits of the Wisbech and Fenland Museum are myriad; its pedigree is unrivalled, its collections are unique, the building itself is an example of Victorian progressive thinking which linked the decorative arts, natural history, and the education of the manufacturing classes, yet it is struggling to survive financially. This is because public money supporting the museum has been progressively reduced, and notwithstanding its successes in attracting Heritage Lottery Funding for essential repairs, the real support which can only come from its own community, is largely missing.

The fundamental role of museums to conserve, display, research and educate has not changed.

That this should be done in ways that reflect our own contemporary technological predilections is not an issue; by all means ensure that the collections are available to be viewed online, that researchers can access archives through digital platforms, but do not believe that once all this is residing in the digital cloud, that museums can be closed and their artefacts put into permanent storage or sold off, never to be seen again.

By all means make the ‘visitor experience’ of museums at the very least, entertaining, engaging, and pleasurable, by whatever means are currently available. Visitors to the Wisbech and Fenland Museum’s recent Dinosaur Exhibition were able to enjoy the conventional experience of coming faceto-face with the head of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and at the same time they were able to explore a virtual

dinosaur world through the use of computer technology. However, it is the case that the visitor’s experience is ultimately dependent on the traditional function of museums: conservation, exhibition, scholarship and education. Without financial support for these functions there is a real risk that the museum experience could degenerate into nothing more than just another computer game.

Museums cannot operate like businesses for, in one sense, they have nothing to sell; consequently they cannot be judged by the balance of their account in terms of earning and expenditure. Of course, they can earn revenue through the services they offer to visitors and through charging entrance fees, as anyone who has visited a major museum in another country knows only too well: this can become an expensive activity. Like many other national and local museums in the UK, the Wisbech and Fenland Museum makes no charge for entry, thus enabling anyone to access its collections as many times as they wish, and in doing so it is remaining true to the liberal notion that culture should be available to all and not just the privileged or wealthy. If museums are to be forced to become self-funding and thus become businesses there is a real risk that they may be forced to sell-off valuable items, charge entrance fees, restrict access for researchers except those that can pay for the privilege, and reduce staffing and services to the public, in order to remain open as nothing more than glorified cultural gift shops.

By all means disagree with the views expressed above, but do not turn your back on an institution which those 19th century benefactors such as the Peckovers and the likes of Chauncy Hare Townshend, went to a great deal of trouble and personal expense to initiate in the belief that they would benefit the people of Wisbech in perpetuity.

Tropical Colours for New-Build Apartment – by Interior Designer & Writer, Yasmin Chopin

Miya, a dental surgeon from Trinidad, had bought a new-build apartment by the river.

She was desperate to introduce colour and called me in to help.

The room was not quite square but trapezoid, with kitchen units along one wall. Though the shape was a little awkward the light was fantastic. Up high with a balcony painted in glaring yellow I knew I could make this space into the perfect home. She told me her likes and dislikes and showed me a few of her favourite pieces; some art glass, an embroidered footstool, a few pictures. From these I was able to take my inspiration and design the room with flexibility in mind. ‘Cottons, linens and silks,’ Miya said. ‘I want it homely and warm, not bland.’

The open plan area of approximately 27 square metres had to serve as both a cooking and entertaining area and be welcoming and relaxing for Miya after a long day at work. An L-shaped sofa

is the key item of furniture and a custom-made round rug fits snugly on the floor beside it. In the dining area a chunky table with four luxury leather chairs add a touch of style, especially charming when the floor-to-ceiling drape is drawn. Evening meals can be light and bright in the summer or romantically cosy in winter.

As this was a brand-new apartment we didn’t need to change the lighting or the floor covering but a softer ambience is achieved with a few additional lamps; an architectural floor lamp and an African print table lamp fitted my concept perfectly.

Oh yes, of course… the mural. The mural is the wow factor! Miya put her trust in me and we are both chuffed to bits with it. When you start an interior design scheme with a wacky yellow balcony you just know it’s going to be fun!

OCTOBER Gardening Tips Remember that the clocks go back at the end of this month, so make as much use as possible of daylight hours before winter sets in. This month sees jobs that are mainly clearing the plot ready for the winter months, plenty of digging and manuring. Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts, and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans and brassicas, so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it.

Once the plot has been dug over, manure or fertilise it, and then cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter, as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. There is no need to dig in the manure as it will get drawn down into the soil over the winter months. An alternative to covering the soil is to plant green manures that will overwinter and can be dug in in the spring.

Understanding coughs, colds and worse

October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb and also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees.

Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

Crops that can be sown this month are:• early broad beans.

• rhubarb crowns.

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so.

• Broad beans –early varieties should overwinter.

Other jobs for this month include:• Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you haven’t already done so, earth up or stake, (or both), Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick all of the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

Function Keys - What’s All That About Then? Part 2 - Advice from Diamond Byte Solutions

Many of my customers ask me, “What is the use of function keys on my keyboard?” or, “What do the F1 through F12 keys do?” It’s true, these keys sit at the top your keyboard, but you may have hardly ever used them. Yet, function keys can help you use shortcuts and special functions and, although they have default primary and secondary features, they are also capable of performing many other functions when used in combination with keys like Ctrl and Alt.

F9 - pressing F9 refreshes a document in Microsoft Word. You can also use it to send and receive e-mail in Microsoft Outlook.

Following on from last month’s F1 - F5, here are F6 – F12.

F11 - opens and closes full-screen mode in File Explorer as well as in all modern internet browsers. In Microsoft Excel, Shift + F11 adds a new sheet and Ctrl + F11 adds a new macro to the workbook.

F6 - can be used like the Tab key on Windows desktop to toggle from the desktop files to the taskbar and the system tray icons. It can also be used to bring the focus to the address bar on most browsers. In Microsoft Office programs, it toggles between the menu items and workspace.

F7 - this key is commonly used to spell check and grammar check a document in Microsoft programs such as Word, Outlook, etc. Shift+F7 runs a Thesaurus check on the highlighted word.

F8 - within Microsoft Word, press F8 to select a word within the text. Keep pressing F8 to extend the selection, also using the arrow keys. SHIFT + F8 shrinks the selection; ALT + F8 opens the Macro dialogue box.

F10 - shows and hides the menu bar in Mozilla Firefox browser or highlights the menu bar within an open application in Microsoft Office programs. Pressing Shift+F10 is the same as right-clicking on a highlighted icon, file, or internet link.

F12 - for all applications within the Microsoft Suite: F12 opens the Save As window on an open application, Ctrl + Shift + F12 is equivalent to Ctrl + P (print function), Ctrl+F12 opens a document, Shift+F12 saves the document (like Ctrl+S) and Ctrl+Shift+F12 prints the document.

Do note that some keyboards’ F1-F12 keys include additional functionality when used in combination with the Fn key. For example, if the F11 key has a blue “Stop” sign under it, pressing Fn + F11 will stop the music you’re listening too. The additional functions available with the use of the Fn key will differ, depending on the brand of keyboard you are using.

Why Should I Form a Company?

A Guide to Incorporation for Small Businesses

Limited companies can create ‘floating charges’ over the assets of the business, this is a special type of security given to the lender which allows them to recover the debt from non-permanent assets such as stock, work in progress or cash. Companies also have other ways to raise finance, including selling shares in the business which allows them to raise capital without borrowing money. There are also a range of other options not open to partnerships and sole traders.

Many small business owners wonder whether it would benefit them to form a limited company or if it is better for their business to remain as a sole trader or partnership.

Often the legal and financial jargon can seem baffling and the consequences don’t always seem clear. The fact that incorporation is governed by the Companies Act 2006, the longest piece of legislation ever produced by Parliament, can make the idea of creating a company seem like more trouble than it’s worth. While incorporation isn’t for everyone it can bring a lot of benefits, some of which I will outline below.

Many people decide to incorporate because it limits their personal liability. Before forming a company, sole traders and partnerships are completely responsible for any debts and liabilities their business incurs.

An incorporated company has its own legal personality and as such, employs its own staff, enters its own agreements and incurs its own debts. Shareholders are only liable for the amount unpaid on any shares they buy but as most shares are paid up in advance, company owners are generally more able to walk away if things go wrong.

Incorporation brings a wider range of options for raising finance than a sole trader or a partnership has. If a sole trader needs a cash injection to kick-start, grow or rescue their business they are limited to borrowing money, either from friends and family or a bank loan.

With partnerships and sole traders, the organisation within the business can become muddled. Often there is no defined structure that separates out the departments, regulates internal and external relations and ensures continuous review and management of affairs. An enterprise where roles are not clearly defined can create tensions which could risk the whole business if uncorrected.

An incorporated business has an inbuilt structure which is flexible enough to adapt to the market yet solid enough not to be ignored. A good example of this is the distinction between the owners (shareholders) and managers (directors) although these can be the same people.

A company can also create subsidiary companies to further limit financial exposure and delegate parts of the business to different sub-companies. This is particularly important for those looking to grow their business into a large company.

Incorporation isn’t right for every business, it is important to consider initial and ongoing costs, management, filing annual accounts and whether incorporation coincides with the size, financial position and objectives of the business. There are other ways to structure a business without forming a company.

Making Sure your Income is Tax-Smart

It is right and proper that we should all pay the tax that is due on our income. Tony Sharpe looks at the benefits of good income tax planning.

Making sure that our clients are tax-efficient in their financial matters is one of the priorities of our financial planning service. With the right planning – always within a framework approved by the taxman – it is possible to limit your tax liabilities.

Income tax is the tax we pay on everything we earn, whether through wages and salaries or through income from property, investments or pensions. Every individual has a Personal Allowance – normally £11,850, although very high earners will have a reduced allowance. All income above this allowance is assessed for income tax and the amount of tax you pay will depend on your total income.

If you are married or in a civil partnership and one partner has an income below the Personal Allowance, the lower earner can transfer a portion of his or her allowance – £ 1,190 – to the higher earner, resulting in a lower tax bill for the higher earner. This allowance is known as the Marriage Allowance (not to be confused

with the Married Couple’s Allowance which can only be claimed by couples where one partner was born before 6 April 1935). This can be particularly useful for retired couples, for example, where one partner has the benefit of a personal pension bringing his or her income above the Personal Allowance and the other relies solely on the state pension.

It’s equally important to ensure that you are managing your income from savings and investments in a taxefficient way. There is a range of reliefs and allowances, such as your Personal Savings Allowance and your ISA Allowance, which can be used.

The Hills are Alive!

Downham Market will be alive with the sounds of harmonious nuns, lonely goatherds and cuckoo clocks this October as Downham Amateur Dramatic Society brings the epic, wellloved musical, “The Sound of Music” to the Town Hall stage.

Accompanied by Downham Market Swing Orchestra, a cast of twenty-six will re-enact the famous story of the Von Trapp family and their escape from Austria during the Second World War.

Bus Passengers in Wisbech to Benefit from More Frequent Service Changes to the Wisbech Tesco Bus Service will come into effect this month to make it even easier to travel around the town. Fenland District Council is trialing a new route and timetable for its Service 68 bus from October 1st, to offer a more frequent service to popular stops such as Tesco on Cromwell Road and the Horsefair Bus Station.

The changes have been made following passenger feedback received during the first twelve months of the pilot service and a route and timetable review which took place in June.

Councillor David Oliver, the Council’s Portfolio Holder for 20

Transport, said, “Passengers have told us which parts of the route they use most often and which they don’t, and we have used that information to create a new route and timetable. We’ve been able to focus on the more popular parts of the route and offer a more frequent service to those areas by removing the stops which haven’t generated much use. We hope the changes will encourage current users to jump on the service more often, and also attract new passengers.”

Laurel and Hardy Appreciation Society Without a doubt, Laurel and Hardy are the greatest comedy team the world has ever known.

Even though their best films were made over eighty years ago, they remain extremely funny today. How much of today’s comedy do you imagine will be able to make a similar claim in eighty years’ time? Did you know there is an official, international Laurel and Hardy Appreciation Society called Sons of the Desert?

Sons of the Desert is devoted to keeping the lives and works of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy before the public, and to have a good time while doing so.

The group takes its name from a lodge that the comedians belong to in the 1933 film, “Sons of the Desert”. In keeping with the tongue-in-cheek ‘desert’ theme, each local branch of

the Society is called a ‘tent’, and is named after a Laurel and Hardy film. Worldwide, there are now well over one hundred active tents, whose members meet regularly to enjoy Laurel and Hardy movies in an informal atmosphere.

The Society was founded in 1964 in New York City and since then, many local tents have been formed. Each tent has a ‘Grand Sheik’ who acts as chairman of the group.

Currently, Del Kempster has the honour of being the Grand Sheik of the London tent.

Unfortunately, there is no tent in the Wisbech area, but if there is enough interest shown, maybe the team can start a new tent here. Of course, you could watch Laurel and Hardy films on DVD or even on YouTube these days, but that is not the

same as watching them on a big screen, together with likeminded enthusiasts. That is the way the films were originally made to be shown.

In the Sons of the Desert, the social side is just as important as the appreciation of the films themselves. Stan Laurel, who gave the Society his blessing and helped to write our constitution in the early 1960s, said, “The only thing that I must insist upon is that everybody should have a hell of a lot of fun”. The group is very confident that his wish will always be warmly and enthusiastically honoured.

Shedders and Fixers Group in Wisbech St Mary Brian Hay is the Treasurer of a local group called Shedders and Fixers that are based in Wisbech St Mary. This is a communitybased project, operating along the lines of the Men’s Sheds Association.

Despite the name, the group is open to men and women with the aim of encouraging skill-

sharing in practical and handson crafts. They also look to encourage lonely and isolated people that would like to share in a social meeting place, even if only for a cup of tea and a chat.

Shedders and Fixers have been awarded a grant by ‘Healthy Fenland’ and are in the throes of building their first shed. The community-based group has been given space at The Secret Garden in Wisbech St Mary, which is a beautiful setting.

They also have a Facebook page called Shedders and Fixers, which posts progress and information to the group.

Brian and the group of Shedders and Fixers would like to see the number of people joining increase. If you are interested in joining this fantastic group of people, please search for their

“50 Backpacks for the Homeless” Sarah Thomas started ‘50 Backpacks for the Homeless’ in December 2016, in the hope that she could raise enough essential items to fill fifty backpacks and take them along to The Ferry Project in Wisbech, where they would distribute them to homeless people that they could not accommodate, due to there being more demand for overnight accommodation than they could supply. That year, with her target of fifty, Sarah managed to raise thirty-eight quite good for the first year!

In 2017, she met Spencer Neilly, who told her that when he left the army, he spent a few months living on a roundabout in a tent. He said that things would have been so much

easier if he had basic provisions and thought that Sarah’s little community project was so important, that he would like to help her with it. So far this year, the two are well on the way to smashing the target, with all kinds of groups and organisations donating to them.

There is such a great need for this in Wisbech and the country as a whole - who knows, one day they may be able to cover a bigger area and supply to other shelters in the area.

Sarah and Spencer rely on the goodwill of the community in order to do this though.

If anyone would like to get in touch or donate, they can type in ‘50 backpacks for the homeless’ into the Facebook search bar and give the page a

‘like’. There they will find a list of all the essential items required, for example toothbrushes, warm hats, and gloves etc. Once your donation is ready, they can drop it off at the ACME Taxi tank in Wisbech, or send them a message through Facebook and we can collect it.

Dinosaurs on Display at Wisbech and Fenland Museum businesses, groups, charities, and individuals willing and able to give £1,000 a year for five years to join its Founders Scheme*, before it closes to new donors at the end of 2018.

Dinosaurs on display have introduced hundreds of new visitors to the wonders of the Wisbech and Fenland Museum this summer, but a big gap between income and running costs could still close its doors for good and see its unique collection broken up and dispersed between museums across the UK. The museum’s trustees are fighting against the odds to plan for its more sustainable future, while keeping it open as a free resource, where people of all ages can explore the history of the town and the Fens around it.

Chairman of the trustees, Richard Barnwell, said, “This summer we’ve seen families attracted by our innovative dinosaur exhibition spellbound by the stories of other exhibits: the chest that Wisbech abolitionist Thomas Clarkson took around the country on his campaign to show the horrors of The Slave Trade; traces of the battle with the Romans for Stonea Camp; the manuscript of Great Expectations in Dickens’ own handwriting, and many more, and it spurs us on.

After Fenland District Council announced it would have to withdraw its lion’s share of the funding next year, Wisbech Town Council increased its annual grant to £20,000.

Marvellous Milestone for Leverington Litter-Pickers Dedicated litter heroes are putting the pride into Leverington – having just chalked up their 1,000th bag of rubbish!

Leverington Street Pride was congratulated on reaching the milestone at its latest litter pick around the village on Saturday August 18th.

Group Secretary, Sally Bruce, made a cake to mark the special occasion, which members enjoyed as a wellearned treat after collecting a further twenty-one bags of rubbish on the day.

The group, which currently has fourteen members, has been helping to clean up the village’s streets and open spaces for six years and also looks after a number of flower barrels around the village.

Members get together for regular litter-picks. Anyone, young or old, is welcome to join

From October, GP practices in Wisbech are to offer extended access to Wisbech patients. Operated by the Wisbech GP Hub, additional appointments will be available on Wednesday evenings, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, and on Saturday mornings between 8am and 12noon.

Councillor Peter Murphy, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Fenland District Council, which co-ordinates Fenland’s sixteen Street Pride groups, said: “On behalf of all the people who hate to see our district ruined by thoughtlessly discarded rubbish, I would like to thank Leverington Street Pride for their fantastic work. Volunteers contribute so valuably to helping keep Fenland clean and tidy, and the work undertaken by Street Pride groups continues to demonstrate a genuine desire to bring people together and improve our environment.”

Raising Money for Magpas Kayleigh Cox was unfortunately involved in a terrible accident back in May 2017. She was riding a horse when her saddle slipped off, resulting in Kayleigh landing on the floor and breaking her back. It was apparent to the paramedics who attended the scene that Kayleigh needed more specialised care, and so the Magpas medical team were called immediately. When the team arrived, they gave her A & E trauma care, before taking her by land ambulance to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, with the Magpas doctors and paramedics on board with her.

Due to the care and attention of the Magpas team, Kayleigh started recovering well. Whilst in oc tob e r 2018

Explaining the new service, Hub Manager, Phillip Wareing, said, “The Wisbech GP Hub will provide an additional sixty-eight appointments each week which are managed by qualified nurses, supervised by a GP. The service is for patients seeking routine appointments for conditions that they would normally see their GP for. We hope the new service provides some further options to those patients who may find it difficult to get to their GP during normal opening hours.”

Patients can pre-book into these appointments, two weeks in advance, simply by asking at their own GP practice.

Can a Long Hot Summer ‘Heat up’ the Autumn Property Market? by Alex Doggett, Agency Owner - Aboda Homes

T

he summer of 2018 has certainly been memorable - and HOT! England has enjoyed its strongest performance at the football World Cup for many years while also enjoying (suffering!) its longest, hottest summer on record.

While Brits have been off enjoying the weather, thoughts of property purchases have taken a back seat for many. However, as we return to work after the long, hot summer, history suggests that agents may see a busy autumn. On average, in the autumn following the last five driest, sunniest and warmest summers, (1995, 1996, 2003, 2006 and 2013), sales rates picked up by an average of 1.8%. However, in all other autumns since 1995, sales have declined by an average of 8.7% compared to the summer months.

Based on the last twenty-seven years’ data, this autumn could be a great time if you wish to sell your home! So, if you have been struggling with your home sale this year, then do get in touch as soon as possible so you can receive essential advice to secure a buyer for your home this year!

“How will the interest rate rise affect the market?” I hear you ask.

At their meeting on August 2nd, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee raised interest rates for just the second time in ten years to 0.75%. The small rate rise will affect those on variable and tracker rate mortgages, (around 3.5 million

households), although increases for most are likely to be fairly minimal.

Any mortgages taken out in recent years, specifically since the introduction of ‘The Mortgage Market Regulations’ in April 2014 that have been subject to strict mortgage lending affordability criteria, should have factored in such an increase.

Furthermore, the vast majority of new loans are on fixed-rate deals. Meanwhile, base rates, while at their highest level for nine years, are still very low by historic standards and mortgage rates remain low.

The question potential borrowers will be asking though is, ‘Is this the start of many increases?’

Another rate rise before the end of the year looks extremely unlikely though. The Bank of England has suggested that any future increases will be gradual, with the next small rise, (0.25%), in mid2019, and a further one before the end of 2020.

So, remember … “Don’t panic, Mr Mainwaring,” and “Don’t tell ‘em your name, Pike.”

Early History Whiting & Partners has been a Chartered Accountancy practice in the heart of East Anglia since 1928.

Ingredients 50g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 700g mixed game meat (partridge, pigeon, pheasant, rabbit and hare all work well), deboned and cut into 3cm pieces 300g pack venison sausages (about 6 sausages), removed from their skins 2 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp tomato purée 150ml red wine 500ml chicken or beef stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 bay leaf 4 tsp thyme leaf, chopped 400g potato, cut into chunks 600g mixed root vegetables (use parsnips, celeriac, swede or turnips), cut into chunks 2 tbsp milk

Method • Heat half the butter and the oil in a large pan, add the onion and carrots, and cook for about 10 mins until soft. Add the game and sausagemeat to the pan. Turn up the heat, squash the meat with the back of your spoon to break it up, and cook for 10 mins until nicely browned.

• Stir the flour and tomato purée into the meat, cook for 1 min, then add the wine, stock, sauce, bay and 3 tsp thyme. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat, cover with a lid and cook for 1 hr. Remove the lid and cook for 15 mins more until the meat is tender and the sauce has thickened.

• Put the potatoes and veg in a large pan, cover with water, bring to the boil and cook for 20 mins until really tender. Drain, leave to steam for 5 mins, then mash with seasoning, milk and the remaining butter.

• Heat oven to 220˚C/200˚C fan/gas 7. Tip the meat into an ovenproof dish and spoon on the mash.

Sprinkle with the remaining thyme and bake for 45 mins until the top is golden and the sauce bubbling.

The best time to visit Cape Town, (if you’re after some sun), is between December and February, giving you temperatures from 25°C to 32°C. Alternatively, if you travel between September and October, you will witness the blankets of blooming springtime flowers that cover the province. Be sure to visit Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, where you’ll find the Tree Canopy Walkway, a scenic bridge that takes visitors from the forest floor up through the trees, giving picturesque panoramic views.

Top places to visit: Table Mountain Table Mountain is a spectacular sight all-year-round; whether it’s a clear blue day or covered with a blanket of cloud,

and you’re guaranteed to see at least one great white shark. If swimming with the sharks is a bit too extreme for your liking, you can take a day trip to Hermanus and experience whale watching from the coast. The best months to see the Humpback whales are between June and December.

Boulders Beach Boulders Beach is one of Cape Town’s most visited beaches, and it isn’t hard to see why. The soft sandy beach is well-kept and can be quiet; however, its colony of African penguins tends to bring in the crowds. You can do a lot more than just watch the penguins, you can even swim with them! The best time to see them is during the breeding season, February to August, (peaking from March to May); however, they are visible all-year-round.

‘Go Sober for October’

- by Holly-Jean ou’ve seen the adverts for it, people are talking about it, will you be doing it? Will you put down the drink, and not have a drop for the whole of October? Well, I will!

I am a 2000’s baby, so I just turned eighteen about four months ago. And, ever since it’s been legal to drink, I have had a lot. I’ve woken up with my head on the side of a bin, a sink, never a toilet (I’m quite classy, see?); I’ve woken up with countless headaches and I am sick of it. We all know it’s not good for us and it doesn’t ever feel great the next day, so why do we do it? Now, I’m not saying I’ll never drink a drop of alcohol again, (I do like my pink gin); I’m just saying that for the whole month of October, I will be waking up feeling fresh and alcohol-free and I will be documenting how I get on!

Now, I’m speaking about this as though it will be ridiculously tough for me. I don’t know how I will find it, because I’ve not yet tried. Everyone is guilty of it, and some people struggle more than others.

For some people, alcohol is an addiction, and it

can ruin lives. For these people, I am not trying to speak about alcohol as though it is light-hearted and easy to just not have a drink for a whole month.

I’m just giving it a go, as an eighteen-year-old who shamefully in August, only had six days alcohol-free!

As I’m writing this, it’s still September, I still have a few drinks to get through before the first of the month. I work a lot around alcohol, having three jobs. One, I’m Editor of ‘Discovering Wisbech’; Two, I’m a musician, spending a lot of time playing in different pubs, and I’m always getting asked, “What do you want to drink?”; and three, I’m a barmaid. So, as you can see, two out of the three jobs do involve alcohol in the sense that I’m around it a lot. And also, as a regular eighteen-year-old-old, I do enjoy the odd drink.

So, who’s with me? I’m not being sponsored or anything like that, I’m just setting myself the challenge as part of a national campaign, ‘Go Sober for October’. Will you be joining me? Let us know, here at Discovering magazines, how you get on.

Would regular stretching benefit you or help improve your sport?

Do you feel that some of your muscles are too tight, or it is difficult to move freely?

Stretching is one of those things that tends to get dropped to the bottom of people’s healthy to-do lists, but adding it to your daily routine can be highly beneficial.

Stretching is essential for improving flexibility, which is related to muscle tension and length, which allows a joint through its full range of motion.

Words from the Mayor Councillor Peter Human

Janet and I were present when the judging and filming of the Wisbech and Britain in Bloom took place. By the time you read this, the result should be known. I cannot praise the team who do this great work enough. The hours they spend, designing displays, planting, watering and of course weeding. I should also mention Meadowgate and Peckover School for their involvement. Good luck and well done to everyone.

We have been busy with our visits to various events, the furthest being to Liverpool to support the Cambridgeshire Army Cadets. We had an enjoyable day with our cadets and they are indeed a credit to our County. There were over 300 hundred cadets at the camp and the day finished with the cadets’ very own band playing a range of music in a very professional manner. We also visited the Norwich Jamboree; over 5000 scouts attended the event including many from Wisbech.

Locally, we attended the Princes Trust end of term presentation, which is such an amazing organization and

I hope it can find funds to continue. We had a wonderful time with the children at Spinney Park with so many fun things for the children to do; we did, however, decline a turn on the zip wire.

The Ladies Circle had a fun day at the Rugby Club with many events and stalls for all to enjoy. The allotment judging was very difficult as we have a very high standard of allotments in Wisbech. Results of the judging will be announced later this month.

We attended a ceremony at Sutton Bridge to commemorate the RAF forces from the local wartime base.

I had the pleasure of opening one new business and one refurbished premises. B&M have a new supermarket and Specsavers have refurbished their market Place premises.

This is great news for our wonderful town of Wisbech.

Elgood’s tea party was a wonderful success and the cakes were amazing.

September started with a visit to Rushden Proms in the Garden, and we had the pleasure of welcoming Revd Adam Stevenson, new Methodist minister to the Fens at Trinity Church.

Huge thanks to Chris Stevens, Jessie Tindale, and volunteers from the Oasis Centre and St Augustine Church for making the visit from the Duke of Gloucester such a success; he thoroughly enjoyed his visit.

Explore Wisbech – Your Buildings, Your Town Centre and Your Heritage

By Taleyna Fletcher, Townscape Heritage Officer, The Wisbech High Street Project Wisbech has a wealth of interesting and important historic buildings, including those in and around the High Street. When putting together the application for the High Street Project to the Heritage Lottery Fund, discussion with the local community and in particular local students, indicated a strong desire to engage with the heritage of Wisbech in new and interesting ways. One way to explore some of the many buildings is through a “Museums at Night” event.

Starting this year with the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, venues will be opening their doors and holding events as part of the national programme.

These events will raise the profile of Wisbech’s heritage and improve learning and understanding of buildings, heritage and the town centre.

FENLAND LEADS THE WAY IN HELPING PEOPLE TO GET ACTIVE – By Steve Barclay MP

N

ow the school holidays are over, it is a good time of year to take up a new sport or become more active. Active Fenland is leading the way in helping people to get active which is both good for their health and provides good fun through taking up new hobbies.

I have seen first-hand the fantastic impact Active Fenland has had on our community since 2015, after I secured £250,000 for the council to fund the three-year project and drive participation in sport. The project has performed well for three years and as a result, received further funding from Public Health, Sport England and the Controlling Migration Fund to further build on its success.

Active Fenland is seeing huge community benefits from some of its current projects which include co-ordination classes for Reception pupils at Peckover Primary School (Wisbech), chair-based exercise classes for elderly residents at Bradshaw Court (March) and buggy fitness classes for mums (currently available in March and soon going to Wisbech).

The Active Fenland team has also supported the development of Parkrun in Whittlesey and

the Junior Parkrun in Wisbech and has some excellent new projects in the pipeline, such as working with local businesses to promote staying active and being healthy in the workplace.

Greencore (Wisbech) has already signed up to this and I look forward to hearing how the programme benefits the employees who work there.

If you are interested in taking up a new sport, meeting new people and being more active, I urge you to get involved in some of the activities which Active Fenland is providing in your local area. No matter what your age, ability or level of mobility there is something on offer, from walking football, chair-based exercises, beginners’ running sessions and activities for children.

Since starting at the end of May, we have built our own parkrun community, with an average weekly attendance of around 40 runners and walkers, plus around 20 volunteers. The 2 km course is fully marshalled to provide a safe, friendly environment for everyone. You can participate however you wish - run, walk or jog. History

WISBECH INSTITUTE CLOCK TOWER

One of the most iconic landmarks of Wisbech is the Clock Tower in Scrimshires Passage. The 66-foot tower was built in 1877/78 through the generosity of the Founder of the Institute, Jonathon Peckover, who inaugurated it on Whit Monday 1878.The tower was increased in height to 99 feet in 1891/92. The present clock was originally sited in the gable end of the Lecture Hall. When it was installed in the new clock tower it was powered by an automatic gas arrangement for regulating its illumination. The clock bell weighs 3cwt and it was cast by Warner & Sons of London.The Carillon was made by James Dann of Wisbech and it consists of thirteen hemispherical bells, constructed to chime the quarters and play a tune, (secular and religious tunes were provided), every two hours, driven by a set of barrels. The bells are fixed instead of semi-permanent and struck on the outside by hammers.

The clock has the same working mechanism as that of Big Ben in London, but on a smaller scale.It is wound once a week by a pulley and weights system.

There are three faces to the clock, all looking outwards, the intention being that the people of Wisbech could hear the chimes to tell them the time and those outside Wisbech would be able to see one of the clock faces from a distance.

In the 1950s Leslie Almond took on the task of repairing the barrels for the carillon.

The barrels are thirty-two inches long and eight inches in diameter, with six tunes on each. The barrel has metal pins which, when the barrel rotates, strike a hammer.

The hammer moves a series of wires which then activate another hammer to strike one of the thirteen bells.After the first tune has played, a small weight mechanism moves the barrel along and on the next occasion it then plays the

second tune and so on until all six tunes have been played, after which it repeats the process.We have four working barrels and these are changed from time to time. This type of working carillon is quite rare, and we have been told by Smith’s of Derby that in the late 1990s only a dozen were working in the country, but fortunately this number has now increased to about fifty.

In 1991, considerable work was carried out to the exterior of the tower which was paid for throughfundraising. At that time the management committee took advantage of the scaffolding to have the exterior of the clock faces renovated by Smith of Derby, for a total cost of £12,000.

Currently, the management committee is considering how to fund the repairs which are now required to secure the structure for the future.

Several louvres need repair, as do the wooden frames of the windows; slates need re-fixing and gutters need attention. The brickwork also needs cleaning and the outside clock faces need some maintenance.

This time the cost is expected to be much more than £12,000.

Unfortunately, this cost is beyond the financial resources of the Institute.

Financial help and sponsorship will be needed to enable us to maintain the clock tower.

Wisbech

Many people have commented on the fact that the clock is not working. It is undergoing some repairs to parts and hopefully will be functioning again shortly. However, it will be a sad day if it has to remain silent permanently because repairs to the mechanism and the tower cannot be carried out. Please help us to raise funds throughthe Friends of the Institute in Wisbech. Annual membership of the Friends costs £5.

Family History

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY RESEARCH SESSIONS - Our experienced researchers hear so many interesting stories from the visitors to our stand, both at our monthly Research Sessions and when we are out and about with our stands at local events. We hear some lovely family legends, which we are often able to prove or dismiss, (these we call myths). We were asked to prove a family legend that the family were related to a Lord Strathcona. Our first search found no connection; they insisted that the legend was true because their grandparents had told them he was their great uncle. So we went away and continued the search with a promise to report back the following month. Guess what we found? I will tell you in my next report.

Our research sessions are in Wisbech Library, Ely Place, on the first Tuesday of each month from 10am – 12noon.

The next session will be on Tuesday October 2nd.

Our experienced researchers offer help and advice with family research.

The sessions are open to anyone interested in family history, no matter where your family originated. We are able to use all the library facilities for free.

On the second Tuesday of each month, (Tuesday October 9th ), we can be found in the restaurant at Wyevale Garden Centre, Crowland, along with our colleagues from Peterborough & District F.H.S. from 11am – 3pm.

Another session is at Crowland Library, every other Wednesday.

Our speakers were also busy with three bookings in September. Our team will be attending the special event in Walsoken church on Saturday November 10th, to commemorate those who suffered in World War 1.

SPEAKERS are quite busy at the moment and taking bookings for next year already. Two of our members give talks on various subjects to local groups, including; ‘The Fun of Family History’, ‘My Naughty Great Aunt Eliza’, ‘The Angels of St Clements Church’,

‘Jane Davyes - a Much-Married Lady’, ‘The Inspector of Nuisances’ and ‘The Ups and Downs of being a JP’.

We enjoyed an exciting start to September with three events in the first two weekends. The most memorable was the visit to our stand

by HRH the Duke of Gloucester at St Augustine’s Church. We were asked to research Australian soldiers born in this area and killed in World War 1. We found two brothers, Samuel and Charles Jude, who had emigrated at different times to Australia. The brothers joined up, and both died within weeks of each other in 1916.

We traced the family of the only brother remaining in Wisbech. We found a great nephew who was able to join us with his wife for the special service. We aim to help him research his own family at our research sessions in the Wisbech Library. Our next event will be in Walsoken Church on Saturday November 10th. Once again, we are busy researching to create an interesting display. Do pop in to see us.
