Art and the First World War: Paul Nash

by Aldo Ierubino, Art Historian The destructive power of mechanised warfare which totally transformed the landscape of the Western Front was recorded in photographs and silent film.

These images chronicle the experience of warfare in a manner which had not really been possible before the advent of photography. However, the traditional arts of drawing, painting and printing, employed by official war artists, created images that mediated that experience through artistic vision, resulting in enduring commentaries on the nature of war.

Along with many other artists, Paul Nash (1889 – 1946) served on the Western Front before he was appointed as a war artist. After officer training, he was sent to St Eloi on the Western Front in February 1917 as a Second Lieutenant in the Hampshire Regiment. He was briefly invalided back to London in June 1917 and when he returned to the Ypres Salient in November 1917 it was as a uniformed observer and war artist. The Third Battle of Ypres was three months old and, unlike his earlier experience of war, Nash found himself regularly under shell fire. The Ypres landscape of the spring had been changed by the war into mile upon mile of deep mud by the destruction of the drainage system, and three months of incessant rain.

It was during this period, as a young artist at the forefront of the development of Modernism in English art, with an established reputation as a landscape painter, that Nash began to experience anger and disillusionment with the war because of its desecration of nature. When he returned to London after six weeks, during which time he produced many sketches, pen and ink drawings and watercolours of the landscape, he set about creating a series of paintings for a one-man show held in May 1918 - Void of War: Paintings and Drawings by Lieut. Paul Nash at Leicester Galleries, London.

His painting ‘We are Making a New World’, 1918 (Imperial War Museum), is possibly the most poignant and powerful expression of the futility of war. Nash, in a letter to his wife, wrote: “I am a messenger who will bring back word from men fighting to those who want the war to last forever…” and this work clearly expresses his desire to see an end to the 4

war. It is based on the drawing ‘Sunrise: Inverness Copse’, made during his stay on the Western Front. Clearly, the very title of the work is a critique of the ambitions of war, but it is the stark contrast of the sunrise over a scene of total devastation, painted as almost abstract form in both line and colour, which places us the viewer at the centre of this irrational landscape which has been churned by shelling into a scene of hell akin to Dante’s Inferno.

It is perhaps no accident that, in contrast to the prewar dalliance with Italian Futurism which had taken hold in the early 20th century among young British artists who had been inspired by the ‘revolutionary’ force of Marinetti’s Futurist Manifesto of 1907, (published in Le Figaro Paris and which glorified technology and war as modernity), the actual experience of war led those same artists to deny it as the ‘world’s only hygiene’.

The reality of war as depicted by Nash in the painting ‘The Menin Road’, 1918-19, (collection of Imperial War Museum) which was originally commissioned by the British War Memorials Committee for the proposed national Hall of Remembrance, clearly demonstrates its carnage and destructive futility. A nightmare scene of destruction akin to mediaeval scenes of the damned at the Last Judgement, in which desolate figures attempt to traverse the landscape of shattered trees, mud and water, lost with no clear purpose, is the antithesis of any possible glorification of war.

After the war, Nash suffered a nervous breakdown and during his recovery, he returned to landscape painting. In the 1930s, Nash, much influenced by continental Surrealism, became the leading British Surrealist painter of the day. He later employed these skills for the representation of the battle in the air for the Air Ministry during the Second World War. For further examples of Paul Nash’s war paintings see: www.iwm.org.uk

Pupils at Wisbech Grammar School celebrate 99% A-level pass rate Wisbech Grammar School Headmaster Chris Staley was delighted with the school pupils’ A-level results this year.

He said: “I am incredibly pleased with the A-level results this year; these are the best results we’ve achieved for a number of years, particularly the top grades 57 percent of which were at A*-B. 31% of which were A* and A (significantly higher than the national average 26.4%). We have also improved our A* to C percentage up by 11%, to 87%, which is fantastic. The overall pass rate remains in excess of 99%.

“These results are a testament to our pupils’ hard work, and the dedication and resilience of our exceptional teaching staff plus the all essential support given by parents. Such grades will provide an excellent foundation for their university careers where more than 75% of our pupils have gained entry to their first-choice university, again another first.

Your Garden

NOVEMBER Gardening Tips November is not the best of months to be spending time outside, as the days are getting shorter and the weather is on the decline. However, time spent in the vegetable plot now will pay off in the spring and make your job easier. Weeds never seem to stop growing but will slow down considerably over the winter months, so it is a good idea to clear them now so that they don’t get a head start in spring.

Make sure that the plot is clear of summer crops; don’t leave them to rot, as this can increase the risk of disease and harbour unwanted pests. November is a good time to give the soil some attention; if you wait any longer the soil could be waterlogged or too cold. Once you have cleared the weeds and any old crops, fork the soil over and add compost or manure to help replace nutrients in the soil. I then cover the area with either weed suppressant or plastic, which will keep the weeds at bay and the soil warmer for planting in the spring.

Another important task for November is pruning, as fruit trees and bushes have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter; also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs. Bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes are also dormant and therefore, now is the time to plant them whilst the ground is not too wet or cold.

Other tasks for this month include:• Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing in to smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position.

•

Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners; one such example is http://gardenplanner. suttons.co.uk

• Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot.

•

Leaf mould makes good mulch and at this time of year there are plenty to be had. You can easily make a cage to contain the leaves using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. Or put them together with a bit of soil into a black plastic bag - make a few small holes.

• Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips; wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness.

• Plant garlic cloves, early “overwintering” broad beans, (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions.

• Prepare a runner bean trench for all of your kitchen waste.

Council Agrees Action to Bring Derelict High Street Buildings Back Into Use Act 1984, at the taxpayers’ expense.

Its dilapidated frontage is a blot on Wisbech High Street. But its rear reveals the true extent of its disrepair, with no roof and crumbling bricks which could fall on anyone if it is allowed to continue to rot. Now Fenland District Council and a local developer have moved to acquire and redevelop the site of 11-12 High Street from its London-based private owner to regenerate the decaying site, once and for all.

Subject to contract, a deal has been agreed for the Council to purchase the buildings from the owner, who bought the site twenty-three years ago.

The buildings would then be transferred to the developer, to redevelop them into new shops and flats, using lottery grant funding, awarded to the Council to revive the heart of the town centre.

Councillor David Oliver, the Council’s cabinet member responsible for heritage, said: “The regeneration of 11-12 High Street is one of the most complex and challenging matters the Council has had to consider in many years. This is a once-in-ageneration opportunity. Bringing these derelict properties back into use will make a significant contribution to the regeneration of the whole of Wisbech High Street, providing fit-for-purpose shops and modern town centre flats, which will encourage

people to use and enjoy the town centre.”

The news comes amid ongoing and exciting developments on the High Street, with the Council progressing its plans for an ambitious community space at No 24 (The Gap) and work on Nos 13-17 being developed in partnership with its private owners.

Councillors have also agreed to use a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) to acquire the Grade II-listed buildings as a back-up, should the acquisition deal fall through. Cabinet meetings held earlier this month warned that action to resolve the matter needed to be taken quickly and completed by January 2021, otherwise the lottery funding of £1.9 million could be in jeopardy.

Members were also warned that if no action was taken and the buildings deteriorated further, it is likely the Council would have to step in to keep the property safe, as required under the Building 14

How to Speed up Your PC. - Advice from Diamond Byte Solutions

If your computer is sluggish, then it’s possible that it’s filling up or that it’s showing other signs of old age, even if it’s only a few years old. But don’t rush out and buy a new PC – it ‘s far cheaper to breathe new life into a PC by upgrading the hard drive and or the RAM memory.

Upgrading your computer’s RAM. RAM (Random Access Memory) is the temporary storage memory used by your computer. The more programs you use (including background processes), the more RAM you need. Adding RAM means that the computer won´t have to rely on the hard drive for memory and will, therefore, be able to operate more programs and software simultaneously.

To identify the type of RAM your PC is using, right-click the Start button, then click System and you will see the Installed Memory (RAM) information. Generally, if you have a 32-bit system, you will need 2GB of RAM. If you have a 64-bit operating system, we recommend a minimum of 6GB of RAM. Upgrading your computer’s hard drive.

Your PC’s hard drive is where all your files and programs are stored. It can fill up very quickly with documents, music, photos and videos etc, and especially when you need to perform a system or software update or run a new operating system.

To check on how much storage space is left on your hard drive, click Start > Settings > System > Storage.

Here you will see the total storage capacity in gigabytes (GB), how much space is currently in use and how much is remaining. If you are running short of space, the coloured bar will turn red.

Traditional hard drives tend to become less effective and reliable over time, therefore, we would recommend installing an SSD (Solid State Drive). They are more expensive than traditional hard drives, (although prices have halved in the last 12 months). However, in our opinion the benefits certainly justify the cost: Reliability.

Since SSDs don’t have small, moving parts that are prone to failure, the chances of hard drive crashes and lost data are considerably lower.

Speed.

SSDs offer instant-load performance, meaning faster boot times, faster application loading times, and better system responsiveness.

Efficiency.

As SSDs have no moving parts, they require less power to operate, which means the battery in a laptop will last longer.

Restrictive Covenants Explained

When dealing with clients’ property transactions I am frequently asked: “It is my property… why can I not erect a shed in my garden without consent of the developer or keep a caravan on my drive without seeking the original developer’s consent?”

I understand it, I had similar thoughts when I bought my first house, however I was aware of the importance of complying with restrictive covenants and the consequences I could face should I decide to “break the rules”.

My property forms part of an estate which consists of more than 100 homes. Each property on the estate was sold subject to certain restrictive covenants which include… not to erect a satellite dish on the front of the property... not to park a caravan or motor home within the boundaries of the property... not to make any structural alteration to the property without the prior written consent of the developer… and so on.

Restrictive covenants are put in place with good intentions to protect the aesthetic appearance of the estate as a whole. The developer has invested time and money to create homes that will be sold and bought multiple times over with the view that attractive homes on attractive estates will attract buyers.

When you buy a property which is registered at HM Land Registry you are given a copy of your title information document which may refer to other documents such as a Transfer of Part or Conveyance. These documents will comprise your deeds and some could contain restrictive covenants. Although these documents are not attached to the title information document, any document referred to should always be kept with and read in conjunction with the title information document.

If you are considering making alterations to your property, it is sensible to check your deeds to make sure you do not require the developer’s consent.

Remember that you may also require planning permission or building regulations consent from the local authority.

Many homeowners have breached their covenants in some way and if you think that you have, you can write to the enforcer of the covenant (in many cases the developer) and ask them for retrospective consent. Alternatively, you can take out restrictive covenant indemnity insurance to cover the costs of legal proceedings if the developer takes you to court for non-compliance.

It is worth noting that the precedent set by Hepworth v Pickles (1900) states that in a situation where a restrictive covenant has been openly and uninterruptedly broken for more than 20 years, it will be presumed that a waiver or release of such covenant has been granted.

If you are concerned that you are in breach of a restrictive covenant or want to alter your property in ways that could possibly breach a restrictive covenant, I strongly recommend seeking legal advice.

Suzanne`s Hedgehog Rescue Here at Discovering Magazines, we spoke to Sarah Arden who volunteers at ‘Suzanne’s Hedgehog Rescue’. And this is her experience of volunteering at the local rescue centre with the little ‘hogs’.

slugs and snails; they are just 5% of their diet and unfortunately, they carry lungworm. 95% of hedgehogs that come into the rescue have internal parasites and, if untreated, will kill them.

“I started volunteering at Suzanne’s hedgehog rescue at the beginning of 2018, and it has been such a rewarding experience. The rescue takes in hedgehogs that are sick, injured, abandoned or underweight”, she explains.

Hedgehog fleas will not live on you or your pets.

A mild winter often results in later litters of baby hogs which will not be big enough to go into hibernation. Winter hibernation weights of around 700g are ideal. Small hedgehogs found under 350g, once prolonged evening temperatures of single figures begin, may need to come into the rescue for overwintering.

Suzanne is such a dedicated person and the rescue is a life commitment to her; it shows just how committed she is by the amount of time, effort and love she puts into each and every hedgehog.

Hedgehogs, unfortunately, get some bad press; they really are remarkably interesting animals.

Due to current climate changes, developing land and lack of general knowledge, these amazing creatures are in trouble and their numbers are currently declining.

So, what can we all do to help?

Leave food and water out regularly. Wet or dry cat food is ideal. Using a feeding station will guarantee you feed just the hedgehogs.

Make a 5” square hole in your fence, making a hedgehog highway. Did you know they can travel up to 1.2 miles in one night searching for food?

It’s a misconception that hedgehogs like to eat

A hedgehog out in the daytime is usually a sign that it’s unwell. Please place the hedgehog in a high-sided box with a towel or similar for it to snuggle up in. Call your local rescue for advice.

Bonfire night is fast approaching; please check for nesting/hibernating hedgehogs and see if you can relocate any hedgehogs before burning.

Suzanne`s hedgehog rescue has a Facebook page where you can see live updates, stories about the hogs in the rescue and ways you can help to ensure that the hedgehogs are nursed back to health for them to be released to the wild.

A New Exhibition Celebrates the Heroic Role of Fenland’s WI Jam Makers Wisbech and Fenland Museum’s latest exhibition brings to light the vital role hundreds of local women played in keeping Britain healthy during and after World War Two. ‘Inspiring Women - The WI in the Isle of Ely’ reveals how fenland WI members were recruited in wartime to produce tons of Vitamin-C rich jam and canned fruit on an industrial scale.

Sugar in bulk was ferried into Wisbech, free of rations, and the produce of fenland kitchens and WI halls was ferried out for national distribution throughout the 1940s.

The exhibition opens on October 20th, and continues through November. Entry is free. Cocurator, Sarah Coleman of Wisbech and Fenland Museum, said, “I had no idea how far-reaching the efforts of these local women were. It is truly phenomenal. Against all odds, these women made a huge difference to their own communities and the country. The WI has never stopped backing progressive causes raised by members and adopted by the Federation as resolutions since 20

1918. That was when members nationwide agreed they would press their local councils to start building houses desperately needed after the First World War. We wanted to celebrate their contribution over the past hundred years.”

Working with Sarah to bring together handwritten ledgers of prodigious wartime jam production, rare photographs and artefacts, including a WI canning machine used locally, is Anne Barnes of Wisbech WI, keeper of the Isle of Ely WI Federation archives.

Anne said, “In the WI we’re proud of our history and we’re still the UK’s largest voluntary women’s organisation working to improve the life of women and whole communities – non-sectarian, non-partypolitical. We have fifty members just in Wisbech Centre WI, and there are many more women’s institutes still going strong in surrounding towns and villages.”

To mark the centenary on October 24th of the firstever WI resolution, Wisbech Centre WI will hold its committee meeting at the Museum, followed by a WI talk at 2.30pm, to which visitors are welcome. n ov e m be r 2 0 1 8

Reeves Runners to Reap Rich Rewards!

Lynette and Steve Reeves, a married couple with three children, from Downham Market are both running the London Marathon 2019 for “Children with Cancer U.K.” They both work at the Upwell Health Centre, where Lynette is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Steve is the Practice and Business Manager.

Lynette has been in the nursing profession for over twenty years and has been in the honourable but sad position of caring for children with cancer, as well as recognising signs of cancer in children, in her role as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. After learning about the great research work “Children with Cancer U.K.” does, Lynette and Steve have decided to be proactive and help reduce the devastating effects cancer causes to these children and their families.

Neither Lynette nor Steve have run long distances, nor even been ‘sport-minded’ until now.

This will be a challenge to move from ‘couch to marathon’ in thirty weeks. They aim to raise £3,500 for this great cause. A number of fundraising events such as quiz nights, race nights and cake stalls will happen over the next six months.

Thinking About Starting Your Own Business or Just Taken the Big Leap?

Starting up a business can often be a step into unfamiliar territory. However, all businesses must register with HM Revenue and Customs within the appropriate timescale. If the business will make ‘taxable supplies’ in the next twelve months that exceed the current VAT registration threshold of £83,000, then VAT registration is obligatory. ❚ Employees. If you are going to employ people, including salaried directors in a limited company, your

business will need to register with HM Revenue and Customs for a PAYE scheme. Regulations surrounding workplace pensions will also need to be adhered to, as non-compliance can result in significant financial penalties. ❚ Record Keeping. The UK’s taxation system is changing, and all businesses must maintain adequate accounting records and, depending on turnover levels, these may need to be held in a digital form from April 2019.

Choosing the right accounting package is vital, and getting right from day one will almost certainly save time.

Peterborough Cathedral to Host Classical Music Feast Peterborough Cathedral Choir and Youth Choir, the Cathedral Festival Chorus, Peterborough Choral Society and East Anglia Chamber Orchestra are joining forces for a special performance of Mozart’s Requiem and Joseph Haydn’s Little Organ Mass on Saturday November 10th.

The choirs and orchestra are combining together for the first time, and they will be under the direction of the Cathedral’s new Director of Music, Tansy Castledine, who took up the post in September 2018.

The performance will be part of the Cathedral’s commemorations to mark the centenary of the Armistice, as well as being part of Peterborough Cathedral’s continuing 900th anniversary programme for 2018.

Wisbech Ladies Circle Wisbech Ladies Circle was founded in 1977 and held their events at The Rose and Crown in Wisbech. It was traditionally for the wives of the Round Table members, but soon evolved as word got around about how much fun it was, and many women from all walks of life became members over the years.

Last year’s Wisbech Chair, Grace Humphrey, and the members of Ladies Circle, raised over £3,000 for her chosen charity, Headway, a charity who support people with brain injuries - something close to her heart. Grace set a challenge, which was for us to get Wisbech recognised and heard at a national level; well, in her year we won area awards and a national media award, so we have certainly got Wisbech recognised and our name is now out there!

This year’s Chair, Michelle Robinson, will choose to support local charities and causes. We welcome anyone to put their charity forward and apply for a donation. We want to help those that are perhaps less heard of, but in need locally.

So what else do we get up to? Well Fun, Friendship and Fundraising is what we are all about. So far this year we have worked alongside The Round Table at The Rose Fair, with our ladies volunteering on the stalls and we had the great honour of taking over The Rose Fair Queen competition which has been going for over fifty years. As it was our first year, we were a little nervous and wanted to make sure we did the tradition proud as it’s been going for so long and such a big event in the Wisbech calendar. Fenland Brews Up a Storm for Macmillan Councillors, staff and residents helped raise cash for charity when Fenland District Council hosted a series of events in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

More than £1,280 was raised for the cause, which is the chosen charity of Council Chairman, Cllr.

Kay Mayor, for her year in office.

The first fundraiser was a Big Quiz Night at the Council’s New Vision Fitness George Campbell Centre in March, on September 19th.

Teams of four went head-to-head in a battle of the brains, with £265 being raised towards the total.

Then on September 27th, Cllr.

Mayor invited everyone to join her at Fenland Hall, March,

for her World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event. Freshly-baked cakes and sausage rolls were on sale, and there was also a raffle with more than eighty prizes and ‘dress-down-day’ for staff. Local residents joined councillors and staff on the morning, along with North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay.

Whittlesey’s New Vision Fitness Manor Centre also held a Coffee Morning in October, contributing a further £287 towards the total.

Cllr. Mayor said: “I have been delighted to see so many people support these events and such a wonderful amount of money raised for the cause. Macmillan

makes a huge difference to the lives of cancer patients and their families in Fenland, and local fundraising efforts go a long way to ensuring its support can continue.”

Another quiz night in aid of Macmillan is being held at the New Vision Fitness Hudson Leisure Centre in Wisbech on Thursday, October 25th, from 7 pm to 9 pm. Teams of four are ideal but not essential as can be made up on the night. Tickets costing £5 per person, including a sausage and chips supper, (bring your own drink), must be purchased in advance from the Hudson reception or by phoning 01354 622399. There will also be a raffle and cakes for sale.

Poppy Cascade “Unveiled” at St Clement’s Church, Outwell.

A spectacular cascade of scarlet, red and crimson poppies, knitted, crocheted, sewn or needle-felted by members of Welle Women’s Institute and St Clement’s Coffee Shoppers, (particularly Elaine Allison, Rebecca Broda, Victoria Brown, Helen Crittle, Sally Harman, Edna Hollands, Margaret Lake, Liz Robson, Ruth Saunders and Linda Shinkin), was “unveiled” on October 5th, at St Clement’s Church, Outwell.

The cascade of poppies, stitched onto white camouflage webbing, falls from the summit of the staircase in the South Aisle of St Clement’s and is part of the parish’s commemoration of the centenary of the end of the First World War. The cascade will remain in place until midNovember. The “unveiling” occurred at a very successful nove mb e r 2018

concert given by the Upwell Gilbert and Sullivan Choral Society, also a tribute to mark the anniversary.

The cascade can be viewed by visitors during the normal Sunday service in St Clement’s, and on Tuesdays when the St Clement’s Coffee Shop is open. [Coffee, tea and cakes are served, as well as delicious soup and light lunches. The proceeds from the Coffee Shop go to help keep St Clement’s open for worship.]

Other projects currently being supported by the Friends of St Clement’s Church include restoration of some of the antique furniture, including two massive wooden trunks and a fine Jacobean communion table, work funded also by a grant from the Leche Trust. The stabilising

and protecting of the splendid mediaeval painted glass, especially that dating from 1420– 1440 in the tracery of the east window of the Beaupré Chapel in St Clement’s, is also a current project, assisted by the Glaziers Trust.

How safe are savings?

There are inevitable risks when putting your money into savings and investments. Tony Sharpe looks at the way the industry does its best to ensure your cash is protected.

When advising clients on their investment strategy, we will normally recommend a mix of savings and investments so that you have a diversified portfolio that matches your attitude to risk. This will usually mean that some of your portfolio will be invested in what we call cash investments. These include bank and building society accounts – including Cash ISAs – and products from NS&I (previously known as National Savings). In essence, a cash investment will normally involve making a deposit and receiving interest. The rate of interest will depend on factors such as the type of account and the length of time that you are prepared to leave your money in situ.

Cash investments have one very specific quality: you will never get back less than your original investment as long as the bank or institution remains in business.

However, it’s worth remembering that failing to keep pace with inflation is the one big risk of investing in cash, particularly over long periods of time. So, if you are looking for medium to long-term growth in excess

of inflation then a mix with other investment solutions is usually appropriate.

The good news for savers is that most banks and financial institutions are covered by the Bank Deposit Protection Scheme which means that your deposits of up to £85,000 per person per bank/institution are protected.

You can check that any money you have on deposit is covered via the Bank of England website at http:// www.bankofengland.co.uk/pra/Pages/authorisations/ banksbuildingsocietieslist.aspx.

Eat the Season

TOFFEE APPLES Toffee Apples make a great Bonfire Night snack and the kids will love helping to decorate them with their favourite sweets!

Method

Ingredients

• Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.

10 wooden skewers (or lolly sticks)

2 tbsp golden syrup

• Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan with 120ml cold water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Boil gently for 12 minutes, until it has reached the soft-crack stage (138°C on a sugar thermometer, or the point at which a little of the mixture, dropped into cold water, forms threads that bend slightly before breaking).

To decorate, why not try sugar stars, crushed ginger snap biscuits, chocolate M&Ms, sprinkles or bits of popcorn? Yummy!

• Dip the bottom two-thirds of the apple in the toffee, turning to coat. Working quickly, get the children to add their decoration of choice to each apple. Leave to set on the baking parchment for 15 minutes.

We Will Remember Them

R

emember, remember the 5th of November... I can remember being in primary school and chanting this with my friends. Remembering Guy Fawkes, just so that we could go and watch fireworks and eat toffee apples!

But, where is the chant for the 11th of November?

An incredibly important day, one that should be remembered and cherished, forever. In my personal opinion, the importance of this date should be drilled into young people, so that they understand just what happened on that date back in 1918, and how it shapes everybody’s lives today.

On November 11th, 1918, fighting in World War I came to an end, following the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany that called for a ceasefire effective at 11 a.m. – it was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The fight for our freedom should never be taken for granted, and certainly not belittled. We should be thankful for the strength and resilience of every service man, woman, and indeed thousands of animals involved too that participated in the fight for our lives, no matter how many years pass.

As a young person, I will make sure to remember every day, and as I grow older, my respect and

gratefulness will not shrink with time; I will make sure that when I have children one day, they will forever remember, no matter how many years it has been.

I wrote a short poem to say thank you. We will remember them.

I take this day, the 11th of November I take this day as one to remember.

While the memories lie and poppies grow, We don’t forget, we make sure we know, That it’s not just today we are thankful for, It’s every day, everything, for evermore.

So thank you, soldier, son, family man and friend, For giving all you were, right until the very end.

Slava brings an unforgettable experience in sound quality. Whilst rhythmic and punchy drums, heavy guitars, melodic horns and pianos pleasure your ears, his deep and heavy vocals tell the painful story of his life. Doesn’t that sound intriguing?

Slava Belevcov has produced music since he was fifteen years old. Fourteen years later, he has just been successful in auditioning for “Britain’s Got Talent”. Back in 2016, Slava started writing music for his new project, “Slava B.”, to stand out from others.

He was learning to play instruments on the go whilst also learning to sing. He achieved high-end sound quality at his home recording studio, which he built himself, where he was influenced by a number of big bands like Rammstein, Gogol Bordello, Metallica and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

This year has seen several successful live performances in Cambridgeshire to showcase his music and attract more fans. As a result, he was able to pull almost two thousand followers across

his social media pages. He has a good stock of songs, including the (locally) well-known “King’s Lynn by Slava B.” and his debut album, “My Heart”, was released on October 12th across all major digital platforms.

Sunday December 9th : 10am – 3pm Roll up, roll up! Wisbech is hosting a magnificent Christmas Fayre on Sunday December 9th.

Shoppers will find everything they need for the big day, including fresh produce, confectionery, handmade arts and crafts, and unique gifts from stallholders and local businesses throughout the town centre and at Wisbech Castle.

You’ll find plenty to get yourself in the festive spirit, including children’s rides; hot festive food; and live music from a wide variety of performers on the Market Place, Horsefair and inside the library. Why not take a free ride on the miniature steam train, from Market Street to the library where there will be children’s activities and refreshments?

Don’t miss your chance to dress to impress at the Bus Station at 12 noon. The Mayor will be awarding prizes, kindly donated by Wisbech Rotary, for the ‘Best Dressed Children’ and ‘Best Dressed Adults’ in a ‘Christmas’ costume.

OVER 60 LOCAL TEACHERS RECEIVE FREE TRAINING THANKS TO OPPORTUNITY AREA FUNDING – By Steve Barclay MP

I

n January of last year, the Department of Education announced that Fenland and East Cambridgeshire was going to be one of just 12 areas in the country to be designated as an ‘Opportunity Area.’ With this, came an additional £6 million funding for our schools and priority access to other Department of Education funding.

Now almost two years into the programme, the Department for Education Opportunity Area has announced promising new figures from the last academic year’s programme of activity in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire including: • More than 60 teachers in our area are now embarking on National Professional Qualifications completely free of charge.

These qualifications would usually cost a school between £450 and £7000 and give teachers the opportunity to increase their skills, confidence and knowledge in a range of areas including leadership, STEM subjects, phonics and managing challenging pupil behaviour. These schemes will help teachers to develop their careers and go on to benefit the children they teach.

• 51 schools in our area (primary, secondary and special) are now involved in evidence-

based action research projects which will help to improve outcomes for their most disadvantaged pupils.

• 13 schools in our area were supported to offer incentives to fill vacancies and 21 Teach First trainees were placed.

An exciting new programme of work is now being carried out for local schools which include: • YMCA mental health training for schools and parents.

• A marketing campaign to attract more teachers to our area and to entice members of the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire community to consider a career in teaching.

• Parental engagement sessions.

• Phonics training.

• Further training for teaching assistants.

This progress helps work towards our goal to ensure that all of our local children have the opportunity to unlock their full potential. I will be meeting with local headteachers again to discuss how we make the most of the Opportunity Area Programme and to hear more about how I can support teachers.

The Importance of Being Active Later in Life - By Lauren Bremner, Active Fenland

As you get older, it’s important to remain active to increase your chances of staying healthy, giving you a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, strokes and dementia. It’s also never too late to start, so if you have never been active, or have been a lot less active for quite some time, you can still gain health benefits from becoming more active now.

You can build up gradually and still improve your health in the process; the jump from inactive to moderately active will make the biggest impact on your health. There are lots of ways to become more active to suit different people’s needs and tastes, and many have fantastic social benefits as well.

Why not give some of the sessions in Wisbech a try?

We offer sessions such as walking football, walking netball, Forever Fit session’s short mat bowls, new-age kurling, table tennis, yoga and walking groups. Christmas Lights Switch On November 25th 2018

The Christmas Lights Switch On event in Wisbech this year will take place in Wisbech Market Place on Sunday November 25th.The event, which usually attracts thousands of members of the public, (even in bad weather), will run between 3.00 pm and 6.00 pm, with the lights being switched on by the Town Mayor at 5.00 pm.

The event will feature a programme of live entertainment, fairground rides, donkey rides, a large inflatable snow globe, Santa Claus, mince pies, (donated by local supermarkets), and the opportunity to purchase food and drink, (including mulled wine).

Fundraising towards the cost of providing the annual Christmas lights display and the switch on event is now underway. Raffle tickets at £1.00 each are available at various locations within Wisbech, or direct from Wisbech Town Council, 1 North Brink, Wisbech; phone 01354 461333; e-mail: info@ wisbechtowncouncil.org.uk.

The first prize is £150 cash, with other prizes which include tickets for the pantomime at the town’s Angles Theatre.

Family History

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY We were asked to prove a family legend that the family were related to Donald Smith, later to become Lord Strathcona. Our first search found no connection; they insisted that the legend was true because their grandparents had told them he was their great uncle. We went away and continued the search with a promise to report back later. We found a connection, but only by the marriage of two female second cousins, way back in the early 1800s, who both married gentlemen with the same surname, Smith - one being Lord Strathcona, the other their greatgrandfather William Smith. It was quite a complicated research process, but we found no blood relationship to Lord Strathcona. He was the husband of their great-grandmother, Helen’s second cousin, Isabella!

Another tale to tell - We were helping a gentleman who was visiting our research session, and were puzzled. As we went back into the family we lost his grandfather, but after much research, we did find him. Guess how? I will tell you in my next report.

NOVEMBER MEETING. Thursday November 22nd, in Wisbech Library from 7pm – 9pm. This will be our endof-year meeting with a little bit of a party mood. There will be a competition, a Family History puzzle-solving exercise and a members’ display, as well as a buffet and drinks. Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings, with a £2 donation.

IN THE HOT SEAT For this month’s ‘In the Hot Seat’ we are featuring Carrie Norman, the Principal of Peckover Primary School. So, if you would like to know a little bit more about Carrie, keep on reading!

Where were you born and what’s your earliest memory of your childhood?

I was born in Outwell. I was really lucky to grow up on a farm, so my earliest memories are all farm-related, such as sitting on the back step with my mum, hand rearing piglets who were runts of the litter. I also remember playing in the grain trailers at harvest and having grain tipped all over us as the trailers were loaded from the combine harvester, and flicking earwigs out of the trailer…… there is absolutely no way this would happen today with health and safety laws!

Who has had the greatest impact on your life and why?

It would have to be my mum. She taught me to love nature; she taught me and my brother to name trees from the leaves we found, to look in books to identify birds, to collect walnuts, beechnuts, cobnuts and conkers.

She is also a little bit wicked and daring, and taught me to take risks and ‘have a go’.

Which two characters (alive or not) would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

Winston Churchill, because he was a great storyteller. I would also like to learn the inside story about some of the decisions made in the Second World War. I admire his tenacity and courage...and apparently, he was good company and very witty.

My second choice would be Melania Trump because I want to ask her what she really thinks of her husband!

How would you describe yourself in five words?

Optimistic, social, creative, warm-hearted and a worrier.

If there was one thing you could change about Wisbech, what would it be and why?

To have some great shops…Karen Millen would be good!

What advice would you give to a 16-year-old you?

Worry less, enjoy yourself more, don’t be afraid of following your dream.
