Visitors to Wisbech on December 9th are in for a fabulous, festive treat!

A whole host of exciting festive fun awaits shoppers.

Children will have the chance to meet Santa and his real, live reindeer on Hill Street. Little ones can enjoy free rides on the teacups by the Rose and Crown and on a miniature steam train at Market Street from 10am – 3pm.

Make sure you are in the Horsefair Shopping Centre, Bus Station at 12 noon, to be in with a chance of winning the ‘Best-Dressed Christmas Costume’ competition.

Everyone is encouraged to wear Christmas fancy dress and the best costume will be judged by the Mayor of Wisbech, who will be awarding prizes kindly donated by Wisbech Rotary. As well as a prize for the best dressed child, there will be a second category for best dressed adult too!

There will also be story-time, face-painting and refreshments to enjoy … not to mention a performance from Wisbech Ukulele at 11am!

There will be plenty for adults too, with live music, festive food and over one hundred stalls in the Market Place and surrounding streets, for that perfect gift. Confirmed musical acts include the acclaimed Rock Choir, Wisbech Drum Corps and Bar Six, to name but a few. They are guaranteed to have you rocking around the Christmas tree!

Food Safety Seminars – Great Success and More to Follow (hopefully!)

Plans are in the pipeline to hold regular, free, food safety seminars for businesses following the success of an event hosted

by Fenland District Council.

Representatives from more than twenty food businesses attended the free seminar, which was organised by the Council’s environmental health team and held at Fenland Hall last month.

Following a welcome from Cllr David Oliver, attendees heard from food safety and public health experts on a variety of subjects, including food allergies and intolerance, food poisoning, effective cleansing and disinfection and safety of vacuum-packed foods. Feedback questionnaires showed 93% of respondents felt the presentations 4

on the day were either good or very good, with many asking for regular similar events.

Trevor Darnes, Senior Environmental Health Officer at Fenland District Council, who organised the event, said: “It was great to welcome lots of different food businesses from across Fenland and give them the opportunity to improve and update their food safety knowledge and understanding.

in future, which we’re definitely going to look at doing.”

The free food safety seminar was held in addition to the Council’s usual food safety course, which is recognised as suitable training for employees in the food/catering sector. The next training course is being held on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2019, from 10am - 1pm, at the Council’s offices in Melbourne Avenue, March. History

‘If It Wasn’t for Those in Between’

Wisbech is an archipelago of urban spaces, a congeries that has resulted from a series of historical accidents. The result poses problems of through access and of use, because the town was not planned as an organic unity but, like Topsy, it just grew.

Probably the original settlement was to the north of the Nene; this is where a Saxon cemetery has been discovered on the Aldi site. However, in A.D.1000, Oswui and Leofric gave the vill of Wisbech to the abbots of Ely. The abbots and later the bishops chose to build their castle to the south of the river. This created a new focus and also brought about one of the first barriers in the form of the Nene, which is one of the features that divide the town.

Nevertheless, a market was developed at the foot of the castle walls, whose line is preserved in the western building line of the Market Place, and together with the church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, these three features formed a viable unit.

Archaeological investigation in Church Terrace has led to the suggestion of a canal linking the castle moat to the Welle Stream, a route of access for the bishop and his officers.

To the north of the Market Place, access was needed to the Nene, and traces of this are to be found in the narrow passageways which link it to the river. As these lost their original function they fell largely into neglect and all, except one, lie derelict rather than providing pleasant and safe pedestrian throughways. They are one of the throughways of Wisbech which have suffered from lack of use.

The next major change in the town scene was the erection of fine domestic buildings on the Brinks. They now became another focus, but as they lay on important through-roads, they could not play the role of leisure spaces.

A fourth urban space was created when Medworth demolished Thurloe’s mansion and built the castle estate. This provided an excellent feature but also a space alongside, and in part rivalling, the Market Place whose original role had been to service the castle and form an organic whole. Now the town had four foci, (the Old Market, the Brinks, the Market Place and the Castle Estate) with little rationale to link them up.

The Victorians created new spaces like the Park and the Kings Walk cemetery, (now Tillery Field), often with only tenuous physical links to the original spaces. They also created a further rupture in the traffic flow by constructing the canal. This brought goods to the Nene but set up a physical boundary between Wisbech and New Walsoken, which has been continued by the Churchill Road’s dual carriageway.

In the Twentieth century, the Horsefair development created a third space alongside the Castle Estate and Market Place. So, there are three spaces with little thought as to how they relate to the thoroughfares of the town. The Horsefair is pedestrianised but the Market Place, which also should be an ambulatory area, remains a car park and a proposed thoroughfare. Many of its commercial functions have been leached by the Horsefair, but on market days it comes alive and prompts the thought of more outside cafes and street furniture like fountains which enliven such spaces in other European towns. Skateboarders make use of Museum Square, and although there may be some criticism of that use, it serves as a reminder that we all ought to actively repossess these urban pedestrian spaces and not abuse them as car parks.

The development of out-of-town retail and entertainment areas, together with the demise of town centre supermarkets, has further weakened the town’s heart.

So the plan of Wisbech consists of illogical paradoxes and anomalies. Its system of thoroughfares must be established in a rational fashion and so too must be its urban spaces and their mutual relationship, functions and interaction.

The First Christmas Card

by Aldo Ierubino, Art Historian The very first printed Christmas greeting card to be sent employing the new ‘Penny Post’ public postal delivery service (which had started in 1840), was sent in December 1843. This was the beginning of the custom of sending a card through the post which has survived to this day.

The custom was started in Britain by Sir Henry Cole, (1808-1882), Assistant Keeper of the new ‘Public Record Office’, (later called the Post Office). It was his idea to expand the use of the postal system through the introduction of an affordable postal charge – one penny – thus extending the use of the postal system to almost anyone. The cost of postage was further reduced to one halfpenny for items such as cards that were sent unsealed, and so began the annual deluge of Christmas cards.

Cole wanted to create in effect a universal postal system, and this he did through the introduction of the cheaper rate postal charge, but it was the ‘invention’ of the printed ‘Christmas card’ which was the masterstroke. To that end he involved a close friend and Royal Academician, John Callcott Horsley (1817-1903), asking him to design a Christmas card that could be commercially printed.

Horsley was a trained academic painter, and an illustrator, who specialised in scenes of everyday life, much in the tradition of Dutch painting. He was distinguished by being chosen as one of six artists to paint frescoes in the House of Lords; however, it is as the designer of the first Christmas card that he is now remembered.

one shilling each. When the cost of the card was added to the one penny postal charge this amounted to a total expenditure of £6.58 at today’s prices, therefore not exactly affordable by anyone, except the wealthy. However, the success of this venture quickly popularised the practice of sending Christmas cards and by 1900 it was widespread throughout Britain and Europe.

The card was of a relatively simple design made up of three panels framed by a wooden trellis around which vines spread, and within which are depicted suitable moralising messages about Christmas. The centre panel shows a convivial scene of family merrymaking, whilst the flanking panels show acts of benevolence and charity.

The Dickensian overtones are probably no more than a coincidence, but it is hard to overlook the fact that Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” was also published in December 1843. The pre-printed ‘To’ and ‘From’ at the top and bottom of the card, enabled the personalisation of the card, which otherwise carried a simple greeting: ‘A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You’. It was published at Summerly’s Home Treasury Office, 12 Old Bond Street, London.

It is interesting to note that the card was not universally approved and that the spirit of Ebenezer Scrooge, as noted by Dickens, was alive and well, for some disapproved because it showed a child being allowed to drink a glass of wine!

The Winds of Change

This is partly because of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) where a power generator sells the energy it produces directly to a buyer. PPAs are long-established in the US and are becoming more common in Europe. By finding installations with sufficient power requirements it is possible to sell all the power generated by a renewable energy project to the private sector at pre-agreed prices, giving more certainty to investors.

For years, the UK Government offered a range of subsidies for clean energy projects, providing grants for those setting up commercial renewable energy plants and offering reductions on energy bills for homeowners who installed solar panels on their houses. This helped to create many small plants supplying energy to the National Grid and also helped the Government to reach its legally binding obligation to cut carbon emissions.

This all changed when the Government scrapped subsidy payments for onshore wind projects. With the withdrawal of subsidies, investment in the wind sector dropped. The private sector won’t commit to projects that don’t produce suitable returns, instead looking to alternatives for higher returns on investment. Similarly, in other renewable sectors, such as solar, as subsidies decreased investment in the sector was pared back. However recent figures suggest that this is changing.

The main reason, however, is the return on investment that the private investor can now yield.

This has partly come about due to the reduction in the cost of generating power from wind and solar sources. The technology is becoming more efficient by recovering more energy when in operation and thus driving the cost down. The cost of the turbines and solar photovoltaics used in renewable projects has also come down, so the sector has gained the benefits of both reduced capital outlay and increased generation.

Battery technology often goes hand in hand with renewables. Wind and solar plants frequently use vast arrays of batteries to store generated energy. Despite huge advances in battery technology in recent years, the cost of these limits the potential for returns. This sector is developing very quickly, so although it remains a ‘watch this space’ opportunity for now it is a very exciting prospect for the near future.

Having worked with a number of developers and landowners on renewable energy projects, it is an exciting prospect that technological development is now providing opportunities for people to set up profitable renewable energy sites without relying on subsidies.

Foodbank’s Supplies Boosted by Generous Donations – but Help is Still Needed The Fenland, King’s Lynn and Peterborough branch of Unite Community Union have raised £100 to buy food for Wisbech Foodbank. The urgently-needed items for families and single people in crisis were handed over to co-ordinator, Margaret Gibbs, on Friday November 2nd by union branch chair, Amy Broad.

Margaret said: “Generous donations from school Harvest Festivals, and from groups like Unite, have helped us build up a stockpile of food. But with the rollout of the Universal Credit benefit in the area, demand has never been so high. And with winter coming and Christmas ahead, families are really going to feel the pressure. We’ll be working flat-out to help them through

hard times. Our warehouse stock will go and we will rely on the continuing support of local people to build it up again.”

Lions Benefit from “Shab to Chic” Generosity Nicky Jarvis at “Shab to Chic” in Emneth recently presented Wisbech Lions’ President, Chris Gay, with £402. This was from her raffle to celebrate the second birthday of “Shab to Chic”.

Nicky kindly gave all the proceeds from the raffle to Wisbech Lions Club and said that she was able to do this due to the generosity of her wonderful customers and friends, and outstanding support from her family.

Vice-President, Marilyn Batrick, stated that it was wonderful when small businesses, such as “Shab to Chic”, help local groups in the community and Wisbech Lions are truly grateful for this support.

World War Two Veteran, Jim, Shares His Memories Mr James Sutton (Jim), now 96, is one of the oldest surviving veterans of World War II, in the area. He was recently cared for at Arthur Rank Hospice in Wisbech, having been referred from Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

His granddaughters describe him as “always having been very dapper”. They took care to make sure he was surrounded by a few of his most treasured possessions whilst he was in the Hospice. His bed is turned towards the patio windows, giving him a view of the Hospice gardens. Facing back into the room, on a cabinet, is Jim’s framed display of five World War II medals. He points a finger to each medal in turn and explains:

At the age of 18, Jim joined his ship, HMS Valiant, at Davenport.

He explains:

“That’s the King George V Imperial War medal: that one’s for being in the War at all. They weren’t so much for what we did, they were more about where we were when we did it. That’s from France and Germany, (when all the troops were going ashore in Normandy, my action station was up on the d e c em b er 2018

“She was just finishing a refit and turned out to be the most heavily armed ship in the fleet.

When I joined my ship, there were four of us: HMS Valiant, HMS Warspite, HMS Rodney and HMS Nelson. They comprised what we called ‘Force H’. Based in Malta, it was our job to go in and sort out any problems in the Mediterranean. We had this call that they were having a bit of bother in Italy, getting the troops ashore at Salerno Bay. So away we went.”

When asked about how he felt about it at the time, Jim responds: “You had a job to do and you just

got on with your job, that’s all. Part and parcel of it. While that was blasting off, I was in our 4.5 gun turret. I was a gun lag, firing the guns. You were given a job to do, so you did it.”

Does he feel proud of having served his country? Jim’s answer is a modest one: “It wasn’t just me there were lots more like me.”

Having had his symptoms stabilised - thanks to the expertise of Arthur Rank Hospice’s doctor and nurse team – Jim was discharged from the Hospice’s care on November 2nd 2018 and was planning to mark this year’s Armistice Day together with his granddaughters, with a small, but special, celebration in his Cottenham Court Nursing Home.

Arthur Rank Hospice cares for more than 3,600 patients each year across the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech, and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team.

Your Garden

DECEMBER Gardening Tips Well, we are already in December and coming up to the shortest day, which means that we are on our way to the next season. However, over the next two to three months we tend to see some of the worst weather; however, there are always jobs that can be done in the garden or allotment.

Some gardeners put their allotment or vegetable patch “to bed” for the winter by covering the ground in plastic sheeting, or weed suppressant to keep weeds at bay: it also keeps the ground a little warmer for early spring planting and prevents heavy rain from washing away the soil’s nutrients. Before putting the covering down, it is worth digging the plot well and adding plenty of well-rotted organic material.

There are one or two crops that you can still plant, such as garlic (if the soil is not frozen or waterlogged); new crowns of rhubarb or existing ones, divided and re-planted; bare-root fruit trees and bushes; and raspberry and blackberry canes. To divide rhubarb, lift the crown and, with a sharp spade, divide it into sections, each with a bud. Re-plant each section, in well-manured ground, with the bud just showing.

Some jobs to do this month include: • Continue topping up compost and leaf mould bins.

• If you intend to grow peas or beans next year, dig in plenty of organic matter as they require nutrient-rich soil.

• Lift the last of your carrots, turnips and beetroot and put a mulch of straw around parsnips to prevent them being frozen into the ground.

• As long as the soil is not frozen you can continue winter digging.

• Earth up Brussels sprouts stems to keep them secure from strong winds and remove any brown or yellow leaves.

• Make sure your winter brassicas are netted to prevent pigeons eating them.

• Keep picking leeks and parsnips but, if the weather is very wet, check that the leeks are not getting water-logged and rotting.

• December is the ideal time to prune apples and pears, gooseberries and currants. Autumn raspberries can be pruned right back to ground level between now and February.

If you feel the need to do some jobs you can always check over your tools in the shed to make sure that they are safe and fit to use next season. Clean the metal and wipe it over with something like 3 in 1 oil.

Clean and wipe down all wooden handles with linseed oil. It not only preserves the wood but makes them more comfortable on the hands.

Check for pests and diseases on any produce in store, especially for rat and mouse damage.

Have a happy Christmas and a well-earned rest after a good year on the vegetable patch. Here’s to a fruitful 2019!

mulled wine This festive favourite is easy to prepare and tastes like Christmas in a glass!

Method • Place all the ingredients into a large saucepan (not aluminium) and gently heat, stirring occasionally so the sugar does not stick.

Ingredients

• You’ll need 10 minutes preparation time, followed by 20 minutes cooking time.

Serves 6-8 people 2 bottles of inexpensive red wine 100g soft, light brown sugar 3 oranges, cut into 6 wedges 3 lemons, cut into 6 wedges 500ml orange juice 2 tsp mixed spice

• You can give extra spice to the drink by adding a little extra sugar and a dash or two of brandy.

Mick said: “It has been something that we had been thinking about doing for a long time but had never got around to it. We have been extremely pleased with how it has gone so far. We have attracted a lot of interest by word of mouth and have had some fantastic online reviews.”

Bridget, who describes herself as a food lover, says the business specialises in good, traditional food, including a range of specialist cakes, and also offers more than forty loose-leaf teas and a range of vintage sweets.

Mick and Bridget Cook have been overwhelmed by the positive response they have received from customers since opening Cook Family Vintage Tea Room in Robingoodfellows Lane, March.

The business – which offers breakfasts, lunches, afternoon teas and Sunday roasts – has already attracted loyal customers of all ages since first opening in June this year with the popularity of their traditional food and decor being highlighted with comments on their Facebook page.

She said: “We offer traditional food in a vintage setting. We are bringing nostalgia back. People have commented that the premises look nothing from the outside but resemble their nan's house inside. I often hear our customers talk about how it brings back many happy memories of visiting their nans' homes when they were younger.

“Everything has been incredibly well received, particularly our traditional specials like bacon and onion roll, and homemade cakes and afternoon teas which are even really popular with youngsters.”

Cook Family Vintage Tea Room, which can be booked for functions, also offers an outside catering service.

Mick says that the premises – situated in the old Red Cross building – can currently seat 27 people but there are plans to increase this as well as developing the outside area to cater for additional customers.

So, you’ve either got yourself or the kids a new PC/ Laptop for Christmas, or are thinking about getting one in the sales. “Hooray,” you/they cheer as they unwrap their surprise – “we want to use it NOW!” (If you haven’t, but are thinking of getting one, check out our guide here https://diamondbyte.co.uk/laptopbuying-guide/) Let’s have a quick reminder of our top tips you need to get it up and running and some of the actions you should undertake when you first turn it on to make it safer, faster and better prepared for the future.

Install Windows Updates Depending on when Windows was installed on your computer, there may be many updates, some of them large, to download. Connect the PC to the Internet, go to Settings, then System and Security > Windows Update > Check for Updates. Your system will search for updates, which you will need to download and install. Reboot your computer and do it again… and again… until the update check fails to return new entries. Be patient, it may take some time.

Customize Do create a user account and password. Only forgo this step if you’re 110% sure no one else will want to gain access to this PC. Ever. If the computer is to have multiple users, it really is a must.

Clean out the cr*p…

Large PC manufacturers install software on their computers at the factory. These “extras” are referred to as bundleware, bloatware, shovelware, and perhaps the most accurate, cr*pware. Download PC Decrapifier, a FREE tool that scans your PC for known bloatware, then allows you to delete it all in one click!…then fill it up again!

You may also need to set your language, time zone, and clock and calendar. We would also advise adjusting the power settings, especially if you’ve got a laptop that is unplugged while in use. The “high performance” pre-sets will run the battery down faster.

Of course, you needed to make room for your own stuff, although we can’t decide for you what editing tool, a media manager, Web browser and e-mail. And there are free alternatives for almost any program you might need – see our previous blog for a list of things we’ve recommended over the years.

Install an Anti-virus program As we’ve mentioned numerous times in previous blogs, keeping your PC safe from malware and viruses is crucial.

Managing Inheritance Tax Liabilities

For those who may be affected by a future Inheritance Tax liability, good estate planning can be important.

Tony Sharpe explains…

If you own your own home and have built up significant wealth through judicious savings and investments, then you may have concerns about the impact that Inheritance Tax (IHT) may have on the estate that you leave for your heirs.

Every individual has an IHT-free allowance of £325,000, known as the Nil Rate Band (NRB). If you are married or in a civil partnership, you can leave as much of your estate as you like to your partner without incurring an IHT charge (but not if you are a cohabitee). If you leave some or all of your estate to someone other than your spouse or civil partner, then that part of your estate will count towards your NRB and anything over the allowance will be subject to a 40% IHT charge.

If you have any unused NRB on your death, you can pass it on to your spouse or civil partner, so the surviving spouse/civil partner can potentially amass a combined NRB of up to £650,000.

There is a further IHT allowance for anyone who is passing their main residence, (or its value), on to their direct descendants - broadly speaking, this means children and grandchildren, whether natural or not. Depending on the value of the property, this could give an additional NRB of up to £125,000 to an individual who dies in the 2018/19 tax year – and is due to go up to £175,000 by 2020/21. If unused, this element can also be passed on to a spouse/civil partner on death, giving a total potential combined

NRB for a qualifying couple of £1 million in 2020/21.

If your estate will exceed the relevant NRB, there are measures that you can employ to mitigate a potential future IHT charge, such as exemptions, gifts, trusts, certain types of investments and bequests to charity.

Of course, there is also the option of life insurance, which won’t reduce the amount of IHT, but will ensure that some or all of the bill will be paid.

Good planning throughout your lifetime can help to ensure that the value of your estate is managed to keep your future IHT liability under control.

Laughter and Precious Family Moments Together

he “C. word”. The one we’ve been thinking about since August. The one that shops have been advertising since October.

The one that makes me feel all warm and excited, but also, the one that makes my bank account shake and shudder. That’s right! You guessed it! CHRISTMAS! Let me tell you ladies and gentlemen, I am more excited than a kid at... well, Christmas I guess?

I think I’m quite a mature person. I deal with things well, hide my excitement for most things behind sarcasm and wit. But Christmas? Stuff me in a turkey and shove a bow on it because I am there.

I’ve been singing all the songs for months, I keep craving Brussels sprouts with every meal, weird I know, I keep accidentally telling people what I’ve bought them. I’m like an oversized six- year-old when it comes to Christmas.

So, while you’re reading this, get the mince pies out and stick some Michael Buble on. It’s about to get Christmassy.

Let me tell you a little bit about my Christmas.

When I was younger, the first thing that would get me excited was the Nativity. Oh yes, two hours of my mum sat in a crowd of parents, waiting to see two minutes of little me, with a tea-towel on my head as one of The Three Wise Men (I wasn’t a pretty child), only to see her slip out of the fire exit, once I’d said my three lines.

Decorating the tree - this will always be one of my favourite traditions. Every year, I go to my grandad’s and decorate his tree for him. Christmas is always at my grandad’s house. It’s so incredible to see his eyes light up, as his tree does too.

Christmas songs in the car - this is a big-un for me.

I just love Christmas songs. If you see a little black car driving through March, blasting out Slade and Mariah Carey whilst singing along, loudly and embarrassingly, that’s me.

My mum complaining about the Christmas chocolates and Advent calendars being in the shops too early - but eating nothing but chocolate snowmen in September. Ah, the festivities!

My auntie showing up late on the 25th of December, a little drunk and sleepy, complaining because we opened our presents without her - if you’re late, that’s your problem, not mine.

In all seriousness, my Christmases have been some of the best memories of my childhood. Not because of presents or the food, although it’s a perk, but because of family. As I get older, I think less about the presents, and more about just being with everyone, laughing and spending precious moments together.

If you have young children, don’t take it for granted that all they care about is their presents.

Don’t think that these moments won’t stay with them forever. I don’t remember what presents I got back in 2004 or, for that matter, 2017! I remember the moments spent by the sides of the ones I love.

would like to wish everyone in Wisbech and across Fenland a merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. With two young children at home, it is a particularly special time of year both personally and for our community, and it is also an opportunity to take stock.

2018 has seen progress in a number of areas locally, in particular for our schools, where the Department for Education’s Opportunity Area programme is well underway. As one of just twelve places nationally in this flagship scheme, all local teachers now have access to free courses to secure extra professional qualifications to develop their careers. Teach First has started placing teachers with Fenland schools, and a majority of our primary schools are now involved in research projects enabling them to benefit from the latest teaching techniques being developed by national experts.

My literacy campaign, ‘Read to Succeed’ entered its third year, with over 2,000 books given to local Year 4 and 5 schoolchildren. Well done to all the children who read six books, and thanks to the parents, grandparents and carers who encouraged them and for the local businesses, councillors and residents who donated books.

As a Health Minister, I am delighted with the £8 million improvements being undertaken at North Cambs Hospital. I visited the hospital in August to see the building work at Rowan Lodge, which is now complete, and is a great facility for physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Ensuring that there are more services closer to home is so important for our community, rather than having to make long journeys to acute hospitals outside the constituency.

Wisbech Castle has been given a new lease of life thanks to the work of a fantastic team of volunteers

On transport this year, progress has been made in areas like the opening of the Ely bypass which helps the whole of Fenland economically. In other areas, progress has moved forward but at a slower pace than I would have liked. We now have funding confirmed for construction of King’s Dyke Crossing in Whittlesey helping journeys to Peterborough, and Wisbech Rail is moving closer towards its destination, following the positive news that £3.25 million has been committed for the next phase of work by the Combined Authority.

My recent constituency-wide parish and town council roundtable brought together parishes with key decision-makers from across the county, and I am hosting similar ‘roundtables’ with headteachers and arts groups in the next couple of months. This helps ensure we make the most effective case possible in securing new investment locally. Sport and healthy activity remain a key focus, so it was great news that Active Fenland secured extra money this year.

Thanks to Steve Tierney, Sam Hoy and a fantastic team of volunteers, Wisbech Castle has been given a new lease of life this year after the team spent much of the summer repairing restoring and rejuvenating this historic building and its gardens.

Above all, Wisbech and Fenland continues to show a fantastic community spirit. This was particularly the case at the moving centenary services last month to mark the end of the First World War. As we celebrate Christmas, we do so remembering those who served in the past, and with thanks to those serving our community over this festive period.

Tickets will be on sale for a raffle to be drawn on the Sunday afternoon.

Proceeds will be added to the on-going fundraising on behalf of Norfolk Hospice Tapping House, and a presentation will be made on the day.

For those who can’t make it for the weekend’s event, the Brewery Shop situated in the North Brink Offices, is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, and there is an on-line shop, offering homedelivery.

monthly live music event that takes place on the first Friday of every month in Wisbech, the heart of the Fens.

It combines first-class entertainment with a twist of faith.

Performers come from far and wide across the UK, as well as some great home-grown local talent. The doors of Octavia’s café open at 7pm and the kettle is put on the boil, brewing up steaming cups of tea and luscious cappuccinos and lattes. Free entry means that you can come and enjoy the comfortable cafe atmosphere and still be able to afford a cup of your favourite beverage and maybe even treat yourself to an indulgent slice of cake! Some performers may also bring CDs they have recorded or books they have written that will also be available on the night. Christmas Extravaganza!

This year's Christmas Extravaganza will take place on the Buttercross and nearby streets on Saturday, December 8th at 3.30pm-7pm with the lights of the town Christmas tree being switched on by our Lady Mayor at 4pm.

There will be tombolas, hot food stalls, games, circus performers and all the usual fairground rides. The hugely popular photo booth has been sponsored by – and will be hosted by – Malcolm James Estate Agents.

After positive feedback from last year's event, visitors will again be able to purchase wristbands for £5 which will allow multiple goes on various games and rides.

We have local businesses to thank for their support and we look forward to seeing lots of you enjoying the music, singing and dancing, carol singing and of course Santa's Grotto.

The Sixth Formers have returned from a very successful week’s residential trip to France. The fifteen students were accompanied by eight staff to the PGL Chateau de Grande Romaine, www.airborneaerials.co.uk located outside Paris. The group explored the market of the small town of Fontainebleau, completing a town trail and shopping challenge, DD DW DB Airbourne Aerials 1/8 Page JULY16.indd which required them to speak a little French!

We ate lunch beneath the Eiffel Tower, took a cruise along the River Seine and climbed up to the Sacre Coeur basilica in Montmartre. Back at the Chateau, students enjoyed making crepes, taking part in a Mini Olympics, swimming and a disco.

The final day was spent at Disneyland, where the students enjoyed the rides and the amazing parade. We are so proud of the students who experienced everything, (including eating snails), with enthusiasm and have made memories which will last them a lifetime! They were a credit to the Academy.

The Sixth Form also organised a Coffee Morning on Friday October 5th, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. It has become a regular fixture in the Academy’s calendar and is well supported by students, parents, carers and our local residents. Students from the Academy’s coffee shop, Bramley’s, were on hand to serve hot drinks, and a vast array of beautiful cakes were donated by school parents, carers and staff. It was a very successful event, raising £338.62 for our local Macmillan group.

Meadowgate Academy turned pink on Friday October 19th, with staff and students enjoying a day of fun, games and a staff “gunging” to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. The final total has yet to be confirmed but it is expected to be around £250. The Academy also wore pink to remember a student, J Hollis, who sadly passed away in the summer, and it was his wish to be remembered by “wearing pink and having fun”.

It would have been his 18th birthday that day, and he would have thoroughly enjoyed the fun and frolics, especially the gunging of teaching assistant, Jesse Bate, who bravely endured the pink gunge!
