YOU! We are so thankful for all of our readers - there wouldn’t be a magazine without you and so thank you for picking it up every month and loving it as much as you do. Want to know more about how to stay fit and healthy?

Why not attend one of our Strength and Balance MOTs, coming soon to Fenland, (Wisbech, March, Chatteris, and Whittlesey)! The MOTs will contain a series of easy physical tests that can be done sitting down, to highlight areas in which you could improve your strength and balance. You’ll also be able to chat with a qualified consultant.

Since the launch of the ‘Stronger for Longer’ campaign back in October, over 100 new people have joined strength and balance classes around the county, and are now stronger and steadier. Over 2,300 people have also downloaded our Supersix leaflet, which is helping people to do strength and balance exercises at home at least twice a week. • Active Fenland also runs a Forever Fit session at the Hudson Leisure Centre, Wisbech (PE13 1RL) on Tuesdays, 11.30 am 1pm, which includes short mat bowls, table tennis and new age kurling, with tea and coffee provided. This is a friendly session open to everyone, just £2 per session. Further to this, Active Fenland has a gentle yoga session that runs on Tuesdays, 2.30pm - 3.30pm at The Oasis Centre, Wisbech (PE13 3NR) for free. This yoga works for beginners and those who may need some adaptations, such as using a chair to work with in order to gain flexibility and strength. Do you Suffer from Painful Verrucae or Unsightly Fungal Nails?

Verrucae are a skin infection caused by a virus that invades the skin and causes visible lesions to appear on the skin. They may appear as a plaque of hard skin, with an irregular border and can have black dots, (blood vessels), visible.

They can be on the soles of the feet or on the toes. The virus is contagious and can grow to bigger lesions and spread on your feet, and to other people. Over a period of time, your immune system can fight the virus to get rid of the verruca, but this specialist treatment can help with the more stubborn verrucae.

Podiatrists have been having a lot of success with a treatment technique called ‘needling’. This is proving to be a reliable treatment for the removal of warts, and is very practical for the busy person who cannot come in for regular sessions. Other treatments using acids and cryotherapy involve multiple appointments, which can add up to a lot

of time out of work and expense, and rely on the patient being fit and healthy.

Needling involves usually only one treatment session and a follow-up, six weeks later. The treatment itself involves a local anaesthetic and then, once 'numb', puncturing of the wart with a needle with the aim of innoculating the virus into the host to produce an immune reaction. Whilst the injection is a little unpleasant, the needling is pain-free. The foot is a little sore for a few days, but no worse than most of the other verruca treatments available. The good news is that, if you have multiple warts, we don't have to needle all of them to get a good result. Recent studies have shown verruca dry needling has a success rate of approximately 70 percent.

All the Rembrandts, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam - February 15th – June 10th 2019

by Aldo Ierubino, Art Historian Some art historians and cultural historians would argue that looking at the creative output of ‘dead white male artists’ such as Rembrandt, is probably a waste of time and no longer appropriate, in terms of modern gender politics and aesthetic values.

However, this overlooks the simple fact that art is always a product of its moment, and directly driven by political, social and economic conditions. The critical function of art is to re-present its unique moment, without which it is mere decoration. It is only when we understand something of artistic practices, subject matter and the sensibilities of the potential viewers/collectors in their own time, that an artefact will begin to make sense.

We are all familiar with the stereotypes of Rembrandt, but if we choose to look anew and inform ourselves, at least about his life and career in the context of when he lived, then it may be possible to arrive at our own evaluation of what it means to make coloured marks on a two-dimensional surface and to consider this a significant creative activity. A trip to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will enable you to take a fresh look at this European artist.

Self-Portrait as the Apostle Paul (1661) far from being a biblical subject is an elegiac evocation of the acceptance of old age and its depredations.

The subject is Rembrandt himself, his face carefully observed via a mirror, represents the topography of age, experience, and perhaps disappointment.

It is the perfect antidote to vanity and its moral, as well as spiritual dangers. Rembrandt looks resigned to his mortality, and like the putative subject, St Paul (Saul on the road to Damascus), his eyes have been opened by light to the truth. However, it is through the use of light and colour that Rembrandt achieves this surface imbued with potential meaning for the viewer. The raking light from the top left magnifies the shadowy undulations of his furrowed brow and picks out his sallow skin and bulbous nose.

Similar observations can be applied to Isaac and Rebecca (1665-69) also known as The Jewish Bride, a work in which the surface is articulated by light, colour, and texture through brushwork. In this work, it is the luminescence of Isaac’s right sleeve which dominates the surface, drawing our eye away from the tender moment towards that which is truly an aesthetic surface in its own right divorced from its representational function. www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/all-therembrandts-exhibition

Two pre-conceptions about Rembrandt may shape your view: he was a successful artist working in Amsterdam in the 17th Century, a period that is referred to as the ‘Golden Age of Dutch Art’; and that in the 1640s his career and personal life took a dramatic downturn, which saw him become a poor, lonely, artist with few commissions.

Among the twenty-two paintings on display, there are two late works that stand out.

Words from the Mayor Mayor James Palmer

Reconnecting the town by rail has been a long-standing community priority for Wisbech. Since my election as Mayor, it has been a priority for the Combined Authority too.

A rail link through March to the greater network will open up more job opportunities and places to study and reduce congestion on our roads. Wisbech should have the same access to the wider economy that many other towns of its size have.

The Combined Authority Board has recently allocated £3 million to progress the return of a rail link to Wisbech. This includes up to £1.5 million for a study to satisfy what is known as the ‘GRIP 3b’ stage of Network Rail’s eight-stage process for bringing rail infrastructure projects to completion. The study will suggest the best place for a station, develop the necessary design work, and explore how the rail route will fit around the A47. Stephen Barclay MP and I will be meeting with the consultants carrying out this study this May. I will be pushing for the work to be brought back to the Board by February 2020 at the latest so residents have more clarity on the next steps.

On the A47, Wisbech residents will know that complete dualling from Wisbech to Peterborough is long overdue. I, like many others, have been held up by slow-moving vehicles on the A47 and seen the road safety issues that this causes. Smaller schemes like the forthcoming improvements to the Guyhirn junction are welcome but are not nearly enough on their own. The Combined Authority’s Board recently

approved an approach to dual the road in one single scheme, as opposed to the usual, time consuming, bit-by-bit schemes we have seen over the years.

This plan could accelerate delivery by as much as six years. I will be working closely with the Government to secure funding. The A47 project is all-important for opening up growth in Wisbech and across the whole of North East Anglia.

The Combined Authority Board has also injected £10.5 million into the Wisbech Access Study to build much-needed upgrades to the road system around Wisbech. This swift action follows a £1.5 million Business Case which identified the best value for money schemes. They include a new signalised staggered junction at Cromwell Road and Bridge Lane, improvements at the junction of the A1101 Elm High Road, a roundabout at Weasenham Lane and a new roundabout at the junction of the A47 and Broadend Road. All of the upgrades will be completed

by October 2021. Without these improvements, the ambitious housing growth earmarked for Wisbech will not be sustainable.

Young Musical Talent Goes To Work they had practised just that same afternoon, which left a full audience completely blown away!

In a brave feat of musical ingenuity, the Fenland Music Centre Association recently held its first ever Youth Musical Showcase and Orchestral Concert at St Peter & St Paul’s Church in Chatteris.

Following an afternoon’s Musical Workshop, sixteen talented young local musicians took to the stage to perform individual pieces that ranged from Vivaldi to Charlie Parker, on a full array of orchestral instruments, (including trombones, violins, saxophones, flutes, piano, and harps). There then followed a full orchestral concert in the evening, whereby all the ‘workshop musicians played pieces

The event was generously sponsored by Metalcraft (Chatteris) Ltd, with Martin Lawrence, (Community Fund Chairman), presenting a cheque to Nyree Scott, (FMCA Chairperson), for the hire of the church. The event was also supported by the Tesco store in March and the Rotary Club of Chatteris, who supplied and served refreshments during the interval.

Overall, the event raised an impressive £223.30 for the FMCA charity, all of which will go towards the running of weekly orchestras, bands and ensembles that practise at March Community Centre every Friday from 6pm to 9pm. (www.fenlandmuscicentre. org.uk).

The FMCA would like to thank everybody involved for all their hard work and financial help. Plans are already under way to repeat this magical event next year!

May is Victorian Month at the Museum.

The Wisbech and Fenland Museum is celebrating Queen Victoria’s 200th birthday this month with some great activities for children and adults, linked to its exhibition of African objects collected on an ill-fated 1841 expedition up the River Niger.

Many of the strikingly beautiful textiles and artefacts from the collection have never been seen by the public before; they have been in the museum archive since they were donated by William Peckover in 1854.

Curator, Robert Bell, said: “As the museum itself is an almost perfectly-preserved Victorian treasure house, we decided to bring out this amazing collection in memory of a well-intentioned mission, supported

by Prince Albert and Her Majesty’s government as well as the Peckover family. The Niger expedition set off in three steamships upriver from the Niger delta with the aim of promoting trade in goods, not slaves – but tragically more than half its members were killed by fever within a month, and their mission was abandoned.”

expedition’s naturalist, Dr. William Stanger of Tydd Gote, who was one of a handful of European survivors. They were sold from his estate after his death in 1854.

The exhibition runs from May 11th to June 15th.

From May 28th to June 1st, there’s a free half-term holiday craft workshop at the museum from 11am to 3pm daily, where children can try making masks inspired by African art and other crafts, and add their contribution to a floor-map of West Africa which traces the course of the mighty River Niger.

On Saturday, May 18th, from 11am to 3pm, adults and children alike can drop in for a free “Hey Clay!

Make and Create in Clay” session with local artist Rachel from Big Sky Arts. Come along and have a go.

On May 24th - 25th, all ages are welcome to follow the museum’s Victoria and Albert Trail for Victoria’s bicentennial. You’ll be invited to find objects from the Great Exhibition of 1851, including model dinosaurs bought as souvenirs 170 years ago. may 2019

Wisbech Rose Fair 2019 The best time to visit Wisbech is during the Rose Fair, and this year it is from Wednesday July 3rd to Saturday 6th. Rose Fair was started by St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church over fifty years ago when funds were needed for the restoration of the building. A local rose grower donated hundreds of rose buds which were sold by the church people to raise funds. The tradition of Rose Fair has continued and, at this time, the whole town becomes involved in four days of spectacular flower displays in the churches and tourist venues. It started by selling roses in the church and strawberry teas in the Church Hall, and each year it grew a little more.

The Flower Festival was born and other churches began to join in; today St. Peter and St. Paul’s church is famous for its magnificent flower displays and Rose Fair is recognised as the premier Flower Festival of East Anglia.

Flower arrangers come from surrounding areas to be part of the festival, using both local and exotic blooms, donating their time and talent to produce some of the most amazing and fantastic displays that take your breath away. Trinity Methodist Church, The Baptist Church and The United Reform Church all have flower displays, as do Peckover House and Octavia Hill’s Birthplace. All of these offer refreshments, so you can rest awhile in between visits.

When Rose Fair started, it was to raise funds to repair St. Peter’s church roof, and now, just over fifty years on, the roof and some masonry is in need of repair again. This time the cost is almost half a million pounds, and while a grant has been awarded from The Heritage Lottery Fund, the church has to match fund to comply with the grant, so this year we need your very valued support more than ever.

The stalls in St. Peter’s gardens are under new management and we hope to offer a greater variety of goods and a new area for casual stall holders. If you, or someone you know, would like

more information on hiring a stall, please go to the Rose Fair website (address below). Please come and have a very enjoyable day or even two; you will be warmly welcomed and all of Wisbech will be forever grateful for your presence.

Refreshments are available in many venues around the town; St. Peter’s Church Hall offers snacks in the self-service area as well as set meals with waitress service. Each year, on the Saturday of Rose Fair, Wisbech Round Table organise floats, and local schools, businesses and organisations dress the floats for the parades at 11am and 2pm. The whole of Wisbech and surrounding areas seem to descend into the centre of town to watch.

Tax-Efficient Investments

There are many different factors to consider when building a financial plan for clients. Investment performance is, of course, important but it is also critical to ensure that we take into account the potential tax liability that comes with investment returns.

ISAs are one of the basic building blocks of a taxefficient investment strategy. The ISA limit for the new 2019/20 tax year remains at ÂŁ20,000 which can be held in cash investments, stocks and shares or a mixture of both. Returns on ISA investments are largely free of income tax or capital gains tax while they remain in the ISA framework.

Pensions remain a key element of a tax-efficient investment strategy. Contributions to pension schemes qualify for tax relief at your marginal rate of tax. Basic rate tax relief is automatically added to your contribution but higher and additional rate taxpayers can claim further relief via their selfassessment tax return. Growth in the fund is largely tax-free and, when drawing from your pension savings, the first 25 percent is normally free of tax.

Other tax-efficient investment opportunities do exist but many of these involve significant levels of risk and are therefore only suitable for certain people. Lady Chadwyck-Healey to Become President of Arthur Rank Hospice Charity Lady Chadwyck-Healey has accepted the title of President of Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. As an official representative and figurehead of the Hospice, she will help raise the profile of the Hospice and develop its network and influence within the wider Cambridgeshire community.

As President, Lady Chadwyck-Healey will also take on ceremonial duties supporting the Hospice by attending events, hosting receptions and presenting awards. Her appointment comes at the end of Lynn Morgan’s tenure, as Sharon Allen takes over the role of CEO on Monday April 1st.

Lady Chadwyck-Healey has a long history of involvement in fundraising campaigns and charity events. She has provided valuable support to EACH, Cancer Research UK, Emmaus, Kettles Yard, and Young Carers in Cambridgeshire; District Citizens’ Advice Bureau (where she is a Patron), Wallace Cancer Care (Patron and Trustee), and SOS Children’s Villages UK (Chair of Trustees); as well as volunteering for Home-Start. She has worked for the Inside Out Trust, setting up training programmes in women’s prisons, and was a co-founder of the charity Parents in Prison, which nurtured links between parents in prison and their children. An alumnus of Anglia Ruskin University, she now lives in Cambridge with her husband Sir Charles Edward Chadwyck-Healey and has three children and six grandchildren.

Director of Fundraising and Communications, Donna Talbot, explains how delighted the Charity is with her appointment: “Lady Chadwyck-Healey brings a wealth of experience and understanding to the role of President of Arthur Rank Hospice and has the passion and influence to wonderfully support us in the coming years. Describing how she first came to know of the Cambridge-based Hospice, Lady Chadwyck-Healey says: “More than twenty years ago, a great friend of mine, Anne Mathias, talked to me about the Hospice when it had just opened on Mill Road. I knew many people who went to the Hospice and heard wonderful things about it. It outgrew its original site - which is fondly remembered by so many people - but at its new location in Shelford Bottom, the warmth and compassion endures and are evident the moment one walks in. atmosphere which prevails throughout the Hospice; I think that this is due to the inspirational guidance of Lynn Morgan.”

“Lynn came and showed us the drawings when she was looking for funding for the new Hospice. She explained the plans in detail, and we were very impressed by her professionalism, commitment, and vision. This vision has now been fulfilled. The Hospice at Shelford Bottom is a place of colour and light, and the well-being of patients has been the focus from concept to completion.” Having been a guest at the Hospice on many previous occasions, her first visit as newly appointed President gave Lady Chadwyck-Healey the opportunity to meet and chat to staff, as well as patients attending one of the Hospice’s Day Therapy sessions.

She said: “This new Hospice is a truly outstanding building in a wonderful location, a centre of excellence, recently recognised as outstanding by CQC – and this is complemented by the inspirational way that the Charity is run, with staff from all departments working together.”

Her admiration for the Hospice has increased, having experienced its care for close friends: “A friend died here at the beginning of the year.

Everyone who visited her was impressed by the care she received and the way in which everything that she wanted was done to make her more comfortable, including a glass of whisky. Visitors could park easily, visit at any time of day or night and stay as long as they wished. Every patient is cared for in a totally individual way by experienced staff, and everything is tailored to suit their needs.

The Hospice is a place which takes away the fear of pain and death, a place of safety and reassurance.”

Talking about her feelings on being appointed she adds: “I felt tremendously honoured to be asked to be President. We are very fortunate to have such an exceptional Hospice in this region and I look forward to working with the new CEO, Sharon Allen.”

Grant Funding for Small and Medium Businesses Small and medium businesses in Cambridgeshire can access grant funding and free energy efficiency reviews, thanks to ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) funding.

The ‘Business Energy Efficiency’ programme can potentially provide grant funding up to a maximum of £20,000, or 25% of project costs, to eligible

Bid to Spread the Reading Bug A new bookshop, teeming with titles, is helping to perpetuate Octavia Hill’s determination to spread the word about the joy of reading in the town where she was born.

The Octavia Hill Society, a registered charity dedicated to promoting awareness of the ideas and ideals of the town’s most famous daughter, has established, at 4 Post Office Lane, Wisbech, the Clock Bookshop, which draws its name from the newly refurbished Clock Tea Room at the Birthplace House nearby.

Everything from biography to cookery titles is set to tick the boxes for book lovers and bargain hunters, and the crowded shelves include novels and antiquarian works, books on crafts, nature, health, military matters and travel, as well as titles tailormade for children and adolescents.

Octavia Hill, the Wisbech-born social reformer and co-founder of the National Trust, was the driving force and treasurer of the influential Kyrle Society, which was founded by her sister, Miranda, to bring beauty home to the people and which spawned thirteen daughter branches.

One element of the Kyrle Society’s campaign was a ‘Books for All’ enterprise when public library provision was still in its infancy in the Victorian era, and in 1877 the Society’s literature branches started sending books all over the United Kingdom to communities which had requested them.

In a bid to demonstrate that Octavia Hill’s methodology is not only achievable but also valid today, the Society has taken a lease on the premises for six months and it is hoped that the shop will become a clearing house for may 2019

second-hand books for the whole of Wisbech and the surrounding area.

Readers can donate books to the shop and, at the end of the period, any good quality volumes left unsold will be offered to applicants free of charge.

Money raised by the sales will be considered as donations to the Octavia Hill Society, which is the primary friends’ support group for Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House at 7 South Brink.

The shop was opened by Charlotte Gilsenan, the new Chief Executive Officer of Bankside Open Spaces Trust, which runs Red Cross Garden, a key part of the most important Octavia Hill site in London.

Wisbech mayor, Councillor Peter Human, welcomed the valuable addition to the town.

Volunteer Carol Scott, one of a three-strong team currently running the shop, said, “Our hope is that the people of Wisbech will welcome this additional service to our community, and it will enable them to donate their books to a good cause, as well as giving, as Octavia Hill did, access to books for people of all ages.”

She added that people interested in helping to man the store would be asked to do two-hour slots and that those wishing to be involved should leave their details at the shop, which opens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm.

“I run a newly-established company, and we started trading in January 2019. We are a very small, multi-skilled company that undertakes plumbing, heating, gas, electrical and building services. We are ‘Gas Safe’, ‘OFTEC’ and ‘NICEIC’ accredited for gas, oil and electrical works. I have previously worked as a Director for a plc company and smaller local contractors over the years and am qualified in many disciplines. I came from a struggling background and I feel lucky to be where I am today and, as a result, want to give back to those who most need help.

There will be a webpage set up with essential application criteria, of which we will from there choose the successful recipients. (They will need to satisfy certain criteria to prove they cannot fund the essential works themselves.)

I am organising and will be running a series of ‘Free Assist’ days, the aim of which is to help private individuals and/or charitable organisations who are struggling to finance having essential improvement work or essential maintenance works undertaken, offering my own labour services, totally free of charge.

Works that ‘DIY Assist’ may get involved in would range from plumbing and heating works, electrical works and small building works. We aim to partner with other skills and suppliers moving forward, and would look to update our story on an ongoing basis.”

Wisbech Art Club Wisbech Art Club was established in 1933 in conjunction with the Wisbech Working Men’s Club and Institute and formed with an initial membership of twenty-four. The club was affiliated with the Wisbech Society and, although the Institute was predominately a men’s club, ladies could join the Art Club as it was a subsidiary, and its first exhibition was held in 1933.

The Club was also open to members wishing to do crafts and pottery, and in 1945 the annual subscription was fifteen shillings, (75p), with a sixpenny, (2½ p) fee for attendance at meetings!

The Club holds two exhibitions each year, in the summer and winter, in the Hudson Room of the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, Museum Square, Wisbech. The Graham Gardiner/Hunter Rowe Awards are given to the first, second and third-best pictures in the summer exhibition, as well as the Linda Savill Flower Painting Trophy for the President’s Award.

The Club aims to provide a meeting place for local aspiring and more experienced artists in all media, 22

and meets once per week throughout the year on Friday evenings, usually in the Elm Centre, but with outdoor venues through the summer months.

A weekly programme of subjects is provided for inspiration and challenge, together with at least four demonstrations and three model sessions, together with several day-long workshops. During meetings, more experienced members offer help and advice to fellow members to enable them to improve.

The Club welcomes new members, but because of the size of the room we use, there is a restriction on numbers and there is sometimes a waiting list for full membership. We do, however, currently have a few vacancies for new members and we also have an Associate membership which allows Associates to attend demonstrations and other special events.

SMALL TOWN

For now, my roots will keep me warm. But one day, they may not.

I may want to travel this world and get lost for a little while.

They say you ‘never know until you go’ but maybe we do. These people who travel around might just have the right idea - not tied down to anything, not part of a ‘clique’, they don’t have to adhere to the social expectations of a small town or even be a part of any town. Now doesn’t that sound amazing?

No nosey neighbours that like a little bit of gossip, peeping through their blinds at you and you having to pretend you’ve not seen… nothing like that.

But I guess that also means no community? No family? No stories when you’re old about the places you used to go? See, the thing about March and all of the surrounding villages and towns is that there is a lot of community spirit. Don’t get me wrong, neighbours can be annoying, and parts of the community are a bit questionable. But, it’s a big family, nonetheless. You will find that you have the same aggravations as that old lady down the street that you’ve never spoken to. You will find that you don’t like the way your neighbour plays his music loud, but I bet he’d help you out if you needed.

I was recently speaking to a friend who grew up in this ‘small town’ and moved to a city, Nottingham in fact. And, she was amazed at how much I knew about everyone around here, I’m a bit of a gossip mind you, but also – it’s the small-town mentality!

Although it must be absolutely brilliant to live in a place where nobody knows you or your past, you can walk through the street wearing what you want, doing what you want without a care in the world, and certainly without anyone talking about it at the hairdressers the next day! But the thing is, people will still talk, they just won’t know your name. They’ll still talk about ‘that girl’ who had toilet roll hanging off their shoe, for example, but they just don't know who ‘that girl’ is.

And I personally find that sad. I want to leave a mark on this world in so many ways and being a part of a community certainly comes into that.

Whether that’s helping out by buying locally, supporting local events or charities – whatever it is, it’s important. And, by helping your small town grow, you’re leaving your mark in little ways! So, if you’re out and shopping, maybe have a think about popping to the family-run shop down the road from you, maybe use local traders and work people – do all you can to help your small town, be nice to your neighbours and be the little change that helps your little town!

The Poor Laws and Poor Relief in Wisbech - Part One

The Poor Laws were first enacted in the 14th century and only repealed with the introduction of the Welfare State in the 1940s. They were ostensibly devised to provide a minimum level of well-being and social support, (poor relief ), for those individuals incapable of doing so for themselves. In reality, early ordinances were repressive, designed to control begging and vagrancy, and subsequent legislation was aimed at reducing demand and therefore the cost of poor relief.

Originally, charity had been the basis of relief and a religious obligation. Alms were doled out by the monasteries although it is unclear if, when or from where, Wisbech might have been in receipt of such largesse. By the 14th century, this system was failing as religious orders distributed less of their wealth, and the role of relief provision was assumed by religious guilds. These were groups of the middle-class laity, (yeomen), who became responsible for parish administration. In Wisbech, the Guild of the Holy Trinity was preeminent in this regard and was to support the poor in the town for the next two-hundred years.

Religious guilds were dissolved, along with the monasteries, in the mid-16th century and the burgesses of the newly created Wisbech Corporation became responsible for providing for the poor. Funds to pay for relief came from weekly collections, the interest in town stock and the profits on the

sale of goods made by the poor in the community, using materials bought in by the burgesses for the purpose wool, hemp, and jute.

However, as in other parts of the country, this was soon not enough and the legislation was required in the form of the Elizabethan Poor Law 1601. The crux of this was a levy on properties called the poor-rate which was collected in every parish and supervised by churchwardens.

Indoor relief was provided for the very young, the very old or the infirm in poor houses or alms-houses. For the able-bodied, outdoor relief in the community was delivered, usually in kind or with work for wages.

Over the next two-hundred years, the burgesses received more than thirty substantial benefactions and bequests in aid of the poor. Often donors would state how their money should be spent: some stipulated it should be on shelter in the form of alms-houses.

There is a record of an alms-house in Wisbech as early as the reign of King John and there are subsequent references in 1477 and 1512 to almshouses located “to the north of the churchyard”. These were named after King John and may have been a rebuild of that earlier property. Between the early 17th century and the end of the 19th century, several sets of alms-houses were built in the town, either with bequests or endowed by wealthy residents. Some of these were replacements for earlier dilapidated shelter for the poor.

By the 18th century, the cost of providing for paupers, particularly those in receipt of outdoor relief, was still rising and becoming prohibitive.

The poor were migrating to more generous parishes, and Wisbech was regarded as one of these. New rules for residency, and therefore qualification

for relief, were introduced but something more radical was needed.

This was the workhouse where able-bodied paupers were admitted and set to work, with the profits from their labour funding their keep.

The first dozen workhouses opened in larger towns and cities but soon smaller towns were following suit and Wisbech’s first workhouse opened in 1722, built at a cost of £2,000 by the burgesses. Located in Albion Place off Nene Quay at the entrance to the Horse Fair, it could accommodate three-hundred but usually, there were fewer than one-hundred inmates. The burgesses paid the workhouse master a price per pauper per week based on the expected price of wheat (and therefore bread) in the coming year.

The money came from the poor-rate supplemented by the profit from work done by the inmates – spinning, baking, brewing, and laundry.

Workhouse relief was undoubtedly more cost-effective. However, the numbers receiving the more expensive – and more acceptable – outdoor relief continued to rise inexorably. In this, Wisbech was no exception. By 1832, the cost of relief in England and Wales had increased by 400% in fifty years and so the government set up a Royal Commission with a view to curbing costs.

Method

• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain.

• If using a gas barbecue, preheat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.

“Sorry mate I didn’t see you” is unfortunately something that bikers hear all too often.

Government statistics for 2017 show that while fatality figures for most road users are falling, motorcyclist deaths have increased by nine percent. The roads can be a dangerous place for those on two wheels.

This won't come as a surprise to motorcyclists who are fully aware that many motorists don’t see them coming even when ‘looking’ in their direction.

It has been shown that when a driver is looking out for a car, their brain is less likely to register a motorcycle. This is cold comfort, however, if you are injured or your bike has been damaged.

Can you claim for lost earnings or damaged equipment as the result of a collision?

If the driver didn’t look or didn’t see you, they could be guilty of driving without due care and attention, a criminal offence. A conviction here could be useful in proving a civil claim for damages.

If you weren’t in view when the other motorist started their manoeuvre, they could avoid blame for the accident. Accidents can happen, and when no one is to blame, no one is liable for damages.

Can you claim if your accident was caused by the road surface?

The maintenance of a road will either be the responsibility of Highways England or the local county council.

The Highways Act 1988 states that the authority has a duty to repair defects such as potholes within a reasonable time of their discovery. If the defect that caused your accident was unreported, you may not have grounds for a claim.

Road repairers have a duty not to leave materials on the road. If debris left on the road causes an accident, you could have grounds to make a claim.

The same applies to mud on the road from farm vehicles or an oil or diesel spillage from a commercial vehicle although it can be difficult to prove who left the mud or contaminant on the road surface, limiting your opportunity to claim.

What should I do if I am involved in an accident?

For the best chance of a successful claim, you should gather as much evidence as you can at the scene, in particular: • The names and addresses of any witnesses.

• Photos of damage to your bike and other vehicles involved. Include number plates and any points of collision.

• Photos of the road surface or debris affecting it.

• Photos of the road or junction where the accident occurred. Get pictures from various angles, identifying where the accident happened and the direction of each vehicle's travel.

Advice on Chrome Password Manager - Advice from Diamond Byte Solutions Here at Diamond Byte, we will be explaining to you about the Chrome Password Manager - a fantastic service which uses the Chrome browser to deliver the service; therefore it will work on every device that supports Chrome - Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Linux platforms.

To start using Google’s password manager, sign into Chrome with your Google account. From Chrome’s Settings, click the “Advanced sync settings” button and ensure Chrome is set to sync passwords. (Note that, if you choose to encrypt your passwords with “your own sync passphrase”, you won’t be able to access your passwords on the web. Smart Lock for Passwords on Android won’t function, either.)

You also need to check that Chrome is set to offer to save your passwords. From the Settings screen, search for “passwords” and ensure “Offer to save your web passwords” is enabled under “Autofill and forms.”

Chrome will also offer to automatically generate a random (and very secure) password when you sign up to websites for the first time. Do note that this feature isn’t enabled by default — it’s a hidden flag. Type chrome://flags into Chrome’s address bar and press Enter to access the list of flags. Locate the “Enable password generation” flag and set it to “Enabled.”

To save a password, just go to a website and sign in normally. Chrome will ask if you want to save the username and password you used on that website, and you can agree.

The next time you visit the website’s login page, Chrome will automatically fill in your username and password.

To access, manage and view all your passwords within Chrome’s Password Manager, go to chrome:// settings/passwords, (you will need to enter your Google account password to access it.) Here you will see a list of all the passwords that Chrome has saved for you. You can change or

Welcome to “Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear”

Every month we will be looking at historical facts, some general and some to do with local areas. The life of the historian, whether they be professional or amateur, has changed dramatically since the birth of the internet just over twenty-five years ago.

If you go to Peckover House, the National Trust property on North Brink, Wisbech, one of the things that always amazes visitors is the library. It is massive, and along one side of it is a bookcase covering the whole wall; there are certainly plenty of books! But, what many visitors don’t realise is that there were once bookcases on both sides of this mammoth room.

school, he wrote to his father asking for money to buy books, so many that, as well as the library, he kept even more books in a room on the other side of his house.

But, despite all this, and despite being a multi-millionaire, he didn’t have the knowledge that we have. And, the reason for this is the internet.

In my research into the life of Jane Stuart, Wisbech’s secret princess, I have been able to get very old books by just typing in their names on the internet.

In a matter of no time, the internet comes up with a vast array of old books for sale in a variety of countries, too.

Anyway, enough about the internet.

Stamford Shakespeare Company Throughout the summer, from June 11th to August 31st this year, the Stamford Shakespeare Company presents a season of plays at the stunning Rutland Open Air Theatre. Described by ‘The Sunday Times’ as “One of the finest things to do this summer”, and ‘The Stage’ as “One of England’s premier alfresco theatre venues”, it really is an experience not to be missed. This summer the Company are proud to present three fantastic plays: Set in Albania in the early 19th century, garnished with live music and glorious costumes, Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, “Twelfth Night”, containing some of his finest comic characters, is a merry tale of unrequited love, shipwrecked twins, cross dressing, mistaken identity and drunken revels. Shakespeare’s epic tragedy “Julius Caesar”, where political and military rivalries spiral out of control, is one of his most gripping plays and features some

But when, on the Ides of March, the dictator is assassinated, Mark Antony unleashes the rage of the people against the conspirators.

Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”, a wonderful, supernatural comedy set in the late 1930s, portrays the trials and tribulations of novelist Charles Condomine, who foolishly holds a séance to research his latest book. When the eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife, Elvira, his life descends into chaos. How will Charles cope, caught between two wives, one dead, the other very much alive?

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY At our March meeting, our members joined forces to look at what we call ‘brick walls’ where we struggle to get information for our family research. We were able to share information and hopefully break through the walls. One member had a problem with an aunt who changed her name and her age to hide the fact she had four illegitimate children. Another had several generations of their forefathers having several marriages, so the woman was known by various surnames. It is always a challenge but a great sense of achievement when you get the results.

Computer sessions are free and offer help to anyone interested in family history. Our experienced researchers will help you and show you how to use all the library facilities to do your own research. Or, they will work alongside you doing your research. You will find them in Wisbech Library on the first Tuesday of the month from 10am – 12 noon in the upstairs events room.

Sadly, our second research session in Wyevale will cease in April, as the Garden Centre in Crowland will close at the end of April. We are looking for another Fenland venue for our sessions.* Our monthly meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month in Wisbech Library from 7pm – 9pm.

Including a speaker, a book shop and a reference stand, our researchers will be on hand to help with research at the beginning of the meetings. Our next meeting will be on Thursday May 23rd; our guest speaker will be Robin may 2019

Hine, whose talk will be ‘Patterns of Nonconformity in Wisbech’. For our June meeting on Thursday June 27th, we have been invited to attend a talk by Robert Bell to be held in the Wisbech Museum from 7pm – 9pm.

Our meetings are open to everyone, and we ask visitors for a donation of £2.

Events Our team will be out and about this month, attending various local events with our interesting displays. You will find us on May 11th at St Augustine Church Wisbech for their 150th anniversary; our display will match their theme, ‘Weddings through the Ages’. We’re also at Elgood’s Brewery on May 12th, with an interesting display in the Thatched Barn, followed by The Walpole St Peter Flower Festival from May 31st for four days. We match our imaginative display to the theme of the Festival, ‘Transport through the Ages’. If you would like us to attend your event, please contact us.

Special talks Our two members who give talks will be attending meetings for a Ladies Group in Elm and the Holbeach Ladies, plus a Ladies Group in Walpole Cross Keys.; they give talks on various subjects to local groups. The talks include ‘The Fun of Family History’, ‘My Naughty Great Aunt Eliza’, ‘The Angels of St Clements Church’, ‘Jane Davyes- a much Married Lady’, ‘ The Inspector of Nuisances’ and ‘The Ups and Downs of being a JP’.
