We can honestly say that this year’s April winds will certainly have shaken, what Shakespeare called, “the darling buds of May”.

April has seen one warm day of sunshine followed by hail stones and freezing temperatures the next. Roll on summertime!

However, many people this year seem not so bothered about the weather, but rather just how wonderful life will become once this lockdown is over. At the time of writing, it’s touch and go whether the hairdressers will be able to cope with the accumulations of lopped locks of hair, or whether our pub gardens will be anything like big enough for everyone clamouring for that first “out of lockdown drink”.

It’s with great sadness that we have to report on the passing of well-known Fenland historian and author Trevor Bevis.

Trevor was a regular contributor to Discovering March magazine but was also known and respected throughout the wider Fenland area for his articles and books looking back at the history of the area.

I know that his articles were greatly enjoyed and respected by readers and I would like to pass on the condolences of everyone connected with the magazine to his family.

Fenland District Council has paid tribute to His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died last month aged 99.

I was actually fortunate enough to be introduced to the Duke at Sandringham when I edited a national magazine and was also due to sit next to him at a Duke of Edinburgh Awards’ lunch. However, on the day it was announced that his place would be taken by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, which was definitely a less nerve-wracking experience…

MAY GARDENING TIPS

ay has a habit of throwing a variety of adverse weather conditions at the gardener and you may have to protect young seedlings from the possibility of a late frost or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have the rain.

Take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. A cheap way to protect tender young plants is to use “bottle cloches” by cutting down the two-litre plastic drinks bottles; they are useful for protecting young runner beans and peas. Also hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month as sometimes they are planted too early; the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate.

This month sees more pests appearing: aphids, slugs and snails will all be out in force so, in order to repel them...

• Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot.

• Plant flowers that attract the pest predators, such as marigold and nasturtiums.

• Stir together one quart of water, one tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper and spray on the plants.

Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so to maximise your space you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast-growing. Fast-growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow-growers

are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can also sow the fast-growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another.

• Catch Cropping – sowing a fast-growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty.

Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list them all, but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately.

Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors.

Other jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Pot on growing plants.

• Put up bean and pea supports.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots.

• If in any doubt about the weather, cover young plants with fleece.

LOOKING FORWARD TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE

T

he sun is shining, spring flowers are out, and the clocks have changed.

Non-essential shops are opening and the vast majority of over-fifties have had the jab.

I’m always conscious when I write this that my thoughts won’t appear in print for a few weeks and the nature of our battle with coronavirus means it could all change again very quickly.

However, despite a third wave in Europe, I am hopeful that the success of our vaccination programme means we’ll be able to keep on track with plans to ease lockdown. Please continue to follow the guidance and keep yourselves and your families safe.

FUNDING Getting a glimpse into what life was like three thousand years ago is a rare treat – so it’s great news that Historic England has awarded a grant of £73,261 for the conservation and protection of the Bronze Age log boats found at Must Farm, Whittlesey. Now housed at Flag Fen in Peterborough, the discovery of the eight boats on the edge of the quarry is of international historic importance. Meanwhile, it’s good to see plans for the Whittlesey Heritage Centre move forward with architects invited to tender following CPCA funding approval of £500,000 to help develop the centre, alongside £218,169 to create a new Heritage Walk. All fantastic for Whittlesey and a boost to the visitor economy.

Funding has also been approved to start restoration work to St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church in Wisbech.

The National Heritage Lottery Fund is committing £363,200 to the scheme to revitalise the Grade I listed medieval church including the leaking roof as well as the masonry and drainpipes. Inside, plans for a new kitchen and toilets will make the church fit

for the modern era and allow expanded use as a community hub able to host events.

FLY-TIPPING Fenland District Council has had more than six hundred fly-tipping reports over the last six months which is far too many. However, I’m pleased to see officers are proactively investigating in order to bring the culprits to justice with site visits, evidence gathering, interviews under caution and pending prosecutions. There is still much to do and I’d urge members of the public to support this by helping to report incidences and checking who they employ to take their waste away and to question where it is being taken.

FLOODING In January I chaired a summit meeting to discuss the flooding in the constituency over the festive period. One of the key early findings is that much of the flooding appears to have been where ditches have either not been maintained or land grabbed for extra gardens. Now is the best time to resolve outstanding issues, before the situation becomes acute again and I am determined to keep up the pressure on the local agencies involved in water management.

READ TO SUCCEED Finally, a quick plug for our annual Read to Succeed community campaign, which has delivered more than ten thousand new books to pupils across the constituency in recent years. Thanks to those organisations which have already pledged funds to help raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. I

n the last few months, a large number of our customers have been falling prey to one online scam or another. There are currently so many scams out there that we could fill this magazine with details on them all.

We have been receiving call after call from distressed individuals, who between them, have had tens of thousands of pounds taken from their bank accounts by unscrupulous scammers. As if people are not finding it hard enough living through a deadly pandemic and numerous lockdowns, they are also now having to deal with the aftermath of having been conned out of their savings. For some people, this money is all they have due to the closure of small businesses and restaurants as well as redundancy.

Over the last six years, we have written numerous articles highlighting the dangers of online scamming; what to look out for, what not to do, how important it is to remain vigilant, yet people are still falling for these scams every single day.

We would like to point out that this is in no way their fault, it is because the scams are becoming more and more sophisticated and convincing, and in addition, scammers are taking advantage of the current situation by preying on the vulnerable.

Five years ago, the UK Government set up the National Cyber Security Centre, which acts as a bridge between industry and government, and which provides a unified source of advice, guidance and support on cyber security.

It is one part of a larger vision for increased cyber security and aims to make the UK a safe place to live and work online. It is part of GCHQ, one of the UK’s security services.

In a nutshell, the NCSC provides a single point of contact for organisations of all sizes, government agencies and the public in a bid to highlight the importance of being cyber security aware. It also works with law enforcement, the UK’s intelligence and security agencies and international partners.

The NCSC website has a fully comprehensive collection of guidance for businesses of all sizes, the self-employed and sole traders, as well as individuals and families. There are tips on safely setting up video conferencing services (i.e. Zoom, Skype), securing your devices and shopping online securely.

It also offers advice on spotting and dealing with suspicious emails, calls and texts and how to ensure organisations are able to deal with the cyber security challenges they are facing since more and more employees are working from home.

DO YOU NEED TO SEE A PODIATRIST? HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED It’s a Census Year! By law (Census Act 1920), every household should have filled in the 2021 census with details of who was living or staying in the household on March 21st, 2021.

Although family historians love the census (if not the transcribers, sometimes spellings of personal and place names leave a lot to be desired – but we family historians have learned to take that into account); the reason for this decennial (every ten years) survey is to help decide how to find and manage public services.

The object of the census was to gain information about the population as a whole. Luckily, it was decided that listing individuals wherever they happened to be on a single night was the most efficient way to count everybody once, and nobody twice – although, I’m sure if you ask, you will find family historians who have found a few of their kith and kin listed twice, especially those st(r) aying away from home on the night in question!

The first census in the UK was taken in 1801.

However, the first was just numeric data and it wasn’t until 1841 that the information collected began to look similar to that we filled in recently.

If you come along to one of our family history sessions, or open days (as soon as we are able to hold them within COVID restrictions), you are sure to be shown the 1841-1911 censuses to track down individuals and find details of families. We are also aware of the problems with spellings and other errors and can guide you through your searches.

The 1921 is a significant census as the 1931 one was lost during the Blitz and there was no 1941 taken due to the Second World War. A national register was compiled in 1939 that listed the personal details of every civilian (no military personnel) in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It was used to coordinate the home-front war effort in issuing identity cards, organising rationing etc. The censuses and register all form part of the sources used when we help with your family tree research; finding names, relationships, where people are from, where they live, what they did for a living etc. The census is also a wonderful snapshot of days gone by in occupations.

Here are some jobs from the 1921 census: • Hayward of the manor – looks after hedges and fences • Penstock keeper – maintains drainage sluices • Fat lad – greases wagon wheels • Muffin maker (otherwise a jiggerer) – makes small plates (crockery) • Cosaque maker – maker of Christmas crackers • Cattle floater – drove a low horse-drawn wagon used for transporting cattle • Pole shifter – moved the pole on electric trams from one overhead wire to another • Dandy rover – part of the silk thread process I wonder if our App developer, coffee barista, life coach, web designer, biodiversity & climate policy advisor, cyber security defence analyst, and digital fundraising officer titles will seem as odd in one hundred years’ time?

By Taking Regular COVID Tests

R

esidents in Wisbech are being urged to get twice-weekly rapid COVID tests.

The move is an important step forward to meet the aims of the national roadmap, allowing everyone to move safely out of lockdown.

Twice-weekly rapid testing is a vital tool in identifying cases of COVID-19 that would otherwise be missed.

With one in three people with coronavirus showing no symptoms and potentially spreading it without knowing, rapid testing helps to identify positive cases quickly, preventing the spread of infection.

There are several ways you can access rapid testing. You can take a test at one of the rapid testing sites locally. Your employer may be offering testing in the workplace.

You can also collect tests to complete at home or order tests to be delivered to your home.

Secondary school pupils are also being asked to take a twice-weekly test.

Dr Liz Robin, Director of Public Health for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “Getting into the habit of twice-weekly testing as part of our everyday lives will help us all to keep each other safe. Alongside the ongoing vaccine rollout, it will help us to move forward with the roadmap out of lockdown.”

WHAT CHANGES WERE ANNOUNCED ON 'TAX DAY' THAT MIGHT AFFECT YOU?

Dubbed as ‘Tax Day’, HM Treasury released thirty documents and consultations on March 23rd as part of its tax policies and consultations update to inform future tax policies. These would normally be published on Budget day, but this year they were published separately in a what it says is a move to ‘strengthen policy making and modernise the UK tax system.’ Chris Goad, partner at Stephenson Smart’s Wisbech office, analyses the main announcements: Making Tax Digital Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT registered business with a turnover of more than £85,000 has been the first phase of what the Government hopes will become a new, digital way of working that will include all taxpayers reporting their income and expenses via digital software, in a more timely manner. With all VAT registered businesses needing to be MTD compliant from April 1st, 2022 and subsequently, businesses and landlords with trading income over £10,000 from April 1st, 2023, being the next phase of the ’ten -year strategy’.

PAULA PEAKE MEETS With Terry Jordan, clerk to Wisbech Town Council

The whole of Terry’s career has been spent in local government.

Terry worked for the county council for seven years (mostly arranging home to school transport). He then worked for Fenland District Council (FDC) for twenty-three years; initially joining the committees’ team and eventually managing the democratic services, licensing, elections and scrutiny teams and managing other corporate activities.

Following redundancy from FDC in 2008, he took up appointments with Cambridgeshire County Council (managing the neighbourhood panels process across the county) and Manea Parish Council (as parish clerk).

He also took on the role as clerk to Elm Parish Council during that time. Terry became clerk to Wisbech Town Council in 2014 (giving up the roles at the county council in 2014 and at Elm and Manea in 2017 and 2018 respectively).

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

I was born in March, at the maternity home (which is now a retirement complex) on Regent Avenue and have lived in the town ever since. It is difficult to specify a particular favourite memory, but it may have been receiving my first drum kit as a Christmas present.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

Parents are an obvious influence on every child’s life while they are growing-up and my wife is a day-to-day influence on me now. However, from the perspective of my working life, my main influence was the late Ernie Thompson; he was the chief executive of Fenland District Council at the time of me taking up employment with that council in 1985. He was a true local government professional, had an unbelievable amount of knowledge and an incredible memory of decisions made by the council. He was my inspiration for me to make local government my career.

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

David Bowie – the first records that I ever purchased were the single Drive-In Saturday and the album Pinups, both by him. He was an icon and the inspiration for many musicians. I remember that I funded the purchase of the album through spending a day strawberry-picking; something which I have never done since.

My late mother – who was always there for me and was proud of whatever I did. She always put others before herself. She passed away four years ago and the chance to have a meal with her now would give me the opportunity to say things to her that perhaps I should have said while she had been alive.

How would you describe yourself in only five words?

Hardworking, dependable, methodical, trustworthy, community-minded.

If there was one thing which you could change about Wisbech, what would it be and why?

I would like people of Wisbech to believe in their town and to not be accepting of the myths of it being a place that is unattractive, dangerous, rundown etc. There is a need to raise aspirations and ambitions and to work together to achieve more investment and in the town.

What advice would you give to a ‘sixteen-year-old you?’

Work hard and be focused upon what you wish to achieve. Every action has a consequence.

Treat others in the way that you would like them to treat you.

Have self-worth and believe (the song lyrics) that ‘those who mind, don’t matter; those who matter, don’t mind.’
