Welcome to your June issue...

Twelve months ago, I wrote, “Spring has come and will soon be gone, with some signs that normality is not too far away.

Optimists are seeing some hope, as certain restrictions are being lifted.”

Well, that “normality” is still tantalisingly just around the corner for many of us. Yes, hugging is now back on the agenda, face masks are starting to become less evident, indoor restaurant and pub visits are now possible, (handy bearing in mind our unpredictable summer weather!) and many families may well be tempted to consider overseas travel at last.

Whatever we may have been going through in recent months, let us all remember that June 20th is Father’s Day and the opportunity to shower that special one with hugs and gifts. To my dad and to my husband Chris, who I love more and more each day, I send all my love.

As we ease our way out of the latest lockdown, there are signs that life is gradually returning to pre-COVID days.

With more and more people receiving their vaccinations against coronavirus it seems that barring a flare up in cases caused by a new variant we could be looking at a relatively normal summer.

The recent lockdowns have made me reflect on a number of things as I’ve been incarcerated at home, some which I will share with you.

I’ve discovered: I like cake; barring some rare exceptions most television programmes are pretty dreadful; football played in empty stadiums is boring; drinking at home is not half as enjoyable as drinking in pubs; Zoom meetings are useful but will not be missed as we return to face-toface discussions; and I love walking my dog even more than I previously thought.

As I write this, we are expecting the umpteenth day of rain, so all I hope is that now there is light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel it coincides with the arrival of sunshine so that when I leave my home I am no longer forced to dress up like some sort of North Pole explorer…

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

By Bridget Hunter As soon as we are able, we will restart our monthly meetings with interesting speakers, demonstrations and displays which are held in Wisbech Library on the fourth Thursday of each month from 7pm to 9pm. Everyone welcome.

Our computer research sessions will be restarted and held twice a month on the first Tuesday of each month in Wisbech Library from 10am-12noon.

The second one in Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay near Downham Market, you will find us in the restaurant from 11am to 2.30pm. Other times and places can be arranged. For further information on any of the above please call me on (01945) 587723.

HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED! - FREE CHURCH SESSIONS My grandfather Magnus Kelday SMITH was born in Orkney. His mother Charlotte KELDAY came from the small island North Ronaldsay, the most northerly of the many islands of Orkney. While visiting the little island we were surprised to see two churches.

My cousins told me that one was the laird’s kirk the other the people’s kirk, i.e. The Church of Scotland and the free church. Researching I found copies of the free kirk sessions. They made very interesting reading.

In the past all help and support came from the church, so not to be a member you would struggle.

Rules were very strict.

These were the records kept by R WILSON, the minister and sessions clerk. Remember women in Scotland kept their maiden name after marriage.

March 17th, 1855 - Thomas THOMSON and Ann MUIR, his wife, were considered as new communicants. The couple had an illegitimate child who died. The death was considered as an admonition by the Lord. The couple were granted church privileges.

June 20th, 1855 - Rebuked (before the congregation) James CURT and his wife Christian MUIR for their prenuptial sins.

June 28th, 1855 - Questioned the proper length of time for newly-weds James CUTT and Christina MUIR to have begotten a child legally. The governing body stated nine full months were needed. The couple were charged with fornication! A midwife was called to give evidence that the birth was premature, as the birth came less than nine months after the wedding.

February 28th, 1856 Mary HALCRO – or widow of MILLER - was suspended from church privileges for ‘uncleanliness’. Note Mary had given birth on February 3rd and had also recently become a widow.

OUR HELP & RESEARCH SESSIONS & MEETINGS At last, our English marriage certificates will show the names of both father and mother of the bridal pair. In Scotland both sets of parents’ names have been on the marriage certificates since they first started in 1855. Even the mother’s maiden name is included.

Our team of transcribers, proofreaders and editors are now checking and proofreading the Walsoken church burial registers. They will then be sent to be included on the FindMyPast research site where they will be available to everyone using FindMyPast, or the library ‘free to use’ site.

Our researchers have been very busy. Two of those family histories researched were tracing runaway fathers from the past. Our researchers are available and willing to give advice and answer your queries. In addition, they are willing to research your family history for you, we just need a few details. If you are a member, they give their research services free. It is well worth the year subscription.

Our speakers are starting to retake bookings to give their talks to various groups and societies.

Ferry Good News During the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, and throughout the lockdowns, local heroes at the Ferry Project have continued to provide tailored support plans twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, helping homeless people in Fenland.

The Ferry Project mission is homeless prevention.

With a dedicated twenty-four-bed hostel, a variety of specialist tailored support services, and housing options, the charity succeeds in assisting a wide range of clients in need. Each person accessing support will typically have a unique set of circumstances which has led to their homelessness, and this will play an important part in their journey.

When a homeless person becomes a client of the charity, at least ninety-nine percent are unemployed with little prospect of finding work.

They are often excluded from the job market with no residential living address, frequently with no belongings and inadequate clothing. This predicament will cause difficulties with personal hygiene, not through choice, but due to lack of places to wash and clean their clothes. Homeless people are often unable to access doctors, dentists, or other key service providers.

The charity’s undertaking is to work individually with each client, creating a tailored support plan that meets their specific need. This support is far

more than just a hot meal and some temporary accommodation. With access to a wealth of training and expertise, the professional support delivered by the Ferry Project team, aims to encourage and coach individuals to learn skills in self-sufficiency and independence. With new skills, better job opportunities, a focus on healthcare and confidence building plans, individuals can and do improve the quality of their life and move on to a better place with independent living.

Approximately two hundred people per year are supported by the charity and its success rate for clients reaching independent living status is consistently eighty percent. It is due to this incredible consistent success rate that has made the Ferry Project an award-winning homeless charity, recognised as well established in its field and valued in the Fenland area of Cambridgeshire.

Being discreet and respectful of the sensitive nature of its work, the Ferry Project is not one to shout from the rooftops about its successes. But this is a local triumph and an area of expertise that deserves local recognition. The Ferry Project started from humble beginnings and was set up as an independent charity, by a group of eleven volunteers with just £300. The charity is now twentyone years old and has grown considerably in size, status, and national recognition.

Nicola says “multi-faceted” would best describe her or as some might say an “eclectic mix of skill and talent, with a sunny disposition”.

Born in the 1960s, in the beautiful market town of Hertford, Herts, she definitely had a hippy vibe and thanks to her upbringing and expert parenting from her mum and dad, she pretty much viewed life as cool and groovy, peaceful and free. But now here’s for the contrast… they also taught her resilience and belief.

She describes herself as being a hardened professional, with a wealth of experience, dedicated and driven to succeed. Now in her fifties, she lives with her husband and son, and fluffy dog and fluffy cat!

In the early 1980s she started her career in fashion after completing a CEE (Certificate of Extended Education) in ‘textiles’ which was an ‘A’ Level equivalent qualification focusing on needlecraft, pottery and art. She is a creative type and an ideas’ person, which can get annoying for those around her, as she is always looking for positive change and has a strong desire to improve things!

Nicola’s first job was in Park Lane, London, working as a personal seamstress for a high-end luxury boutique. From day one she was immersed into the lives of the rich and famous, as she presented the latest French and Italian fashion labels such as Pancaldi, Chanel and Christian Dior to an audience whose hotel suites cost more than her mum and dad’s ex-council house.

Her career really took off some years later – rather surprisingly not in fashion but working for the pharmaceutical giants Glaxo Smith Kline. She specialised in clinical trials and studied pharmaceutical sciences in London. Nicola seemed to get on well in this highly regulated,

planet, and she has always believed in me and encouraged me to follow my dreams.

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? laboratory environment and was fast tracked to a process improvements quality manager, which suited her eye for detail and her creative side.

Nicola’s love of fashion continued as a side-line and in 2001 she branched out to set up her own fashion label and bridal styling company. To give her company credibility she studied a diploma with the International Institute of Style Coaching, offering a unique combination of image and lifestyle consultancy. During the last eight years Nicola has diversified again and has been working with the homeless charity, Ferry Project – using her experience to do good.

She now runs the Queen Mary Centre and fundraises for the charity.

Where were you born and, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

I was born in Hertford County Hospital which is now a luxury apartment complex. I lived in Hertford for thirty-six years and still regard it as my home. I had a gentle and simple childhood and growing up we were encouraged to be free spirits and adventurous. I have so many lovely memories it’s difficult to choose one, but I guess it must be Christmas Eve – the excitement, the anticipation that I would share with my brother. We had adjoining rooms and would listen to Christmas songs on a loop until we finally fell asleep before Santa and his reindeers came to visit – I’m certain I heard snow bells far off in the distance.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

First and foremost is my mum, Iris, who has given me the freedom and courage to be myself. She is quite possibly the kindest person on the

Louis Theroux fascinates me; he has such an engaging way about him, and he is fearless. His work as a journalist is outstanding. I would also love to shoot the breeze with Rick Stein – he really seems to be able to appreciate and enjoy the finer things of life and he loves wine! I’ve been to his restaurant in Padstow a couple of times and I even said hello to him once, but I guess he won’t remember me!

How would you describe yourself in five words?

Only five! Here goes… gentle, resourceful, strong, patient and creative.

If there was on thing which you could change about Wisbech, what would it be and why?

It is next to impossible to answer this because Wisbech is a stunning, beautiful historic town bursting at the seams with opportunity. But if I had to choose one thing, I would say bring back the railway and then the rest will gather momentum from there. There needs to be a top-level recognition and serious investment to right the wrongs of the past.

What advice would you give to a sixteen-year-old you?

This is easy – you are the expert of you and don’t ever forget that. The ones that point their fingers think they know best and are doing so through their own mistakes and hindsight.

Life will have bumps in the road, but it’s how we learn and grow that matters. Your future is yours to create, listen carefully, be respectful, sleep on it, don’t knee-jerk and choose your own destiny based on how good you feel deep inside. Let your emotions be your guide and be true to yourself. Never ever give up on your dreams.

TOM’S BUSINESS VISION A SUCCESS Westbrook Window Repairs has enjoyed an excellent first year in business.

IT'S GREAT TO BE OUT AND ABOUT...

W

ith the COVID roadmap moving forward as the vaccine rollout has continued at pace, it has been great to get back out and about in the constituency in person rather than virtually meeting people, visiting places and finding out more about great projects and troublesome issues.

The Vertical Garden project, one of the “I Love Wisbech” partnership endeavours, is one of the projects it was great to see firsthand. The ambition is to create a beautiful vertical garden on the site of one of the public buildings in Wisbech Park - ‘living walls’ which will become a focal point that can be enjoyed by everyone. This focus on nature is one of the areas I am promoting in government, as I think COVID has reinforced our connection with the importance of spending time outdoors.

In Wisbech, I visited Fenrock to meet Nate George and Alex Harris to hear about plans for their 8000sq ft new venue. The sheer scope of the building, with routes for all grades and abilities, means there truly is something for everyone. If you have not yet visited and fancy trying a new challenge, then do go and have a look.

At Estover playing field with Gerry Roe, of March Town FC, and Katie Critchley from the Cambs FA, I found out more about their bid to the Football Foundation for a new full size 3G pitch. It’s great to see these plans and it is a bid I strongly support. We need more 3G football pitches across the constituency and I am working with a number of local sports clubs on this and spoke recently with the Football Foundation to make this case.

In Whittlesey, it was great to be back at Fenland Youth Radio again for the Fenland Friday Breakfast Show with Rob and Julie Windle.

We covered a range of topics including my annual Read to Succeed campaign which is raising money to give every Year 4 child in the constituency a reading book to take home for

the summer holidays; about having my COVID jab the week before, and the recent Pride of Whittlesey Awards. We also chatted about some of the major topics for Whittlesey like progress on Kings Dyke and the issues around Saxon Pit. Speaking of those two issues, I visited the Kings Dyke crossing scheme for an update to see the earthworks on the eastern side of the railway, which is moving on rapidly, and the partial filling of Star Pit looks complete. The reinforced earth abutments, which connect the deck of the bridge with the ground and supports its weight have now reached their full height.

Regarding Saxon Pit, I had a constructive meeting with the Environment Agency Chief Executive Sir James Bevan to reinforce our community concerns.

Sir James was very clear that his organisation is working to address this at pace. I will continue to liaise with local councillors to ensure relevant bodies are held to account in respect of this site.

The formal March Flood Investigation Report into the flooding that ruined some residents’ Christmas is due to be published by the county council this month, but I’m pleased to see that organisations responsible are already taking actions to resolve some of the issues.

In recent months, the Highways Authority and Anglian Water have reset a number of road pumps and foul pumping stations; 2324 gullies have been cleansed and a private culvert cleared on Wisbech Road; Land Registry searches have been undertaken to identify those responsible for blocked watercourses; the Anglian Water network has been surveyed as have riparian watercourses to input into an integrated urban drainage model.

Finally, having now had my own jab of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine at Doddington, I wanted once again to say huge thanks to the fantastic health team both there and at all the other vaccination sites across North East Cambridgeshire. Well done to everyone involved.

The last year has impacted hugely on the holiday market. It is not only airlines that have been affected, but holidays closer to home. If you own a property that you rent as a furnished holiday let you need to be aware of the impact that

the reduction in rental occupation may have on your tax affairs. here are special tax rules for rental income from properties that qualify as Furnished Holiday Lettings.

If you let properties that qualify as furnished holiday lettings you can claim Capital Gains Tax reliefs and you are also entitled to plant and machinery capital allowances for items such as furniture, equipment and fixtures.

There is also a benefit to those wishing to use the earnings to increase the threshold to pay into a pension, as profits on furnished holiday lettings count as earnings for pension purposes.

To qualify as a furnished holiday letting your property must be commercially let as a business.

You must make the property available for commercial let for 210 days in the year, and actually let the property as furnished holiday accommodation to the public for at least 105 days in the year.

There will be many furnished holiday let owners who will have struggled to meet these criteria this year. However, you may still be able to qualify for tax reliefs. If you have more than one property you may qualify for the averaging election or if your property reaches the occupancy threshold in some years but not in others you may qualify for a period of grace election.

MALICIOUS NOTIFICATIONS PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

Most browsers, websites, and apps use push notifications as a form of marketing and in general, these ‘allow website notifications’ are fine as they simply let web developers notify users when new content is posted. However, over the last few years, criminals have been misusing these notifications to hide malware, a tactic known as ‘malvertising.’

Malvertising works when users open a website with ‘allow website notifications’ and are faced with a pop-up asking for permission to display notifications.

If users agree, their choices are saved in browser options and criminals are then able to continually feed them with unwanted ads. These intrusive ads can in turn lead to malicious websites and can even run scripts that install malware. Some sites ask to ‘enable notifications, otherwise content will not be

displayed.’ When the user declines, the pop-up keeps appearing until the website is closed. These notifications to display content are merely trying to trick users into clicking ‘allow.’

• Apps and programs are installed on your PC that you don’t remember installing

Even with an adblocker installed, malicious push notifications can still get through as I have seen on many of my customers’ computers.

Google Chrome - go to settings, click on the advanced arrow to reveal privacy and security, go to site settings then notifications to see the list of websites you allowed to send you push notifications, as well as the list of websites you blocked push notifications from. If you see one you don’t remember approving or wish to take back permission from, click the vertical dots bar for that domain and select ‘remove.’

Typical signs that the push notifications you are getting are malicious are: • Ads appear in places where they shouldn’t, e.g. your desktop, even when the browser is closed • The browser home page changes without your permission • Websites you used to visit are now not displaying properly, or you are redirected to another address • You get pop-ups which advertise fake software or updates, or warnings that you are infected, followed by prompts to install a specific clean-up tool (DON’T!)

Interesting And Curious Facts

Of Yesteryear Unusual, fascinating and sometimes amusing, by the author of ‘Wisbech’s Secret Princess,’ Chris Donald

T

he call of nature is centuries old.

Whatever a person does in their life they have to use the toilet. The average person uses the toilet 2500 times a year and there are plenty of names for it. The privy, commode, WC, bog, lavatory, little boy’s room, little girl’s room, latrine, outhouse, powder room, rest room or throne.

The toilet has come into history, with King George II dying on the toilet and more recently, the King of Rock’n’roll Elvis Presley having a heart attack whilst sat on the throne and nearly forty thousand Americans are injured in toilets every year.

time consisted of soft earth. In the winter, planks would be put down so that people out walking would not get stuck in the mud. Along the north side or river side ran an open sewer going straight into the Nene and it was from the River Nene that a lot of the drinking water was taken.

By the 19th century the sewers taking the waste from the town to the river were covered, but unfortunately this contaminated the drinking water and there were many cases of cholera.

For some reason there were a lot of cases at Mouth Lane, Guyhirn.

It wasn’t till 1865 that there was decent drinking water for Wisbech. This came from Marham in Norfolk and the Wisbech Waterworks Company piped 440,000 gallons daily to the town. The pump was at Wiggenhall St Germans and Wisbech celebrated with a grand turning on of the water in the Market Place. This took the form of a large fountain. Lord Robert Montagu pulled the lever and the water shot up in the air. Unfortunately... the wind was blowing in the wrong direction and all the celebrities got soaked. It wasn’t until 1877 that this service was available during the night as well as the day.

And, at Bank House, on North Brink, they had cesspits. These were emptied when full by gong-fermors. The Peckovers employed seventeen gardeners with just one outside toilet known as the ‘Thunderbox.’ This was a lot better than some places, for instance in Sunderland at this time there was one privy for seventy-six people!

he Greater Peterborough UTC (GPUTC) are now accepting applications for Year 7 students wishing to start in September 2021. They recently announced that, “Working alongside our new academic partners, the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT), we are finally able to share this outstanding news.”

This means current Year 6 students with a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) will now be able to join the school at an even earlier age, and the GPUTC will be able to deliver their specialist curriculum to even more of

Peterborough’s budding young scientists, architects, designers and mathematicians.

A first for the wider Peterborough area, the GPUTC boasts of pioneering “Expeditionary Learning” which engages students in learning across multiple subjects. Through this scheme of learning, students complete in-depth research of authentic topics through a series of expeditions designed to enhance students’ knowledge and develop their research and critical thinking skills. Because the GPUTC has close ties with numerous sponsors in various fields of STEM, students who choose to join this institution will have

experts at hand to support their learning.

Intake spaces will be limited to only sixty students. Principal, Mr David Bisley, explained that this is so that, “We can ensure that high quality academic rigour is delivered, alongside unrivalled care, support and guidance from our dedicated Year 7 team of teachers and support staff.”

Maybe you are avoiding certain situations.

Maybe you’re noticing muscle tension. Maybe you are experiencing panic attacks. You might feel that your anxiety is getting out of control, that your worries are starting to take over.

Anxiety is our body’s natural reaction to a threat.

Our body automatically goes into ‘fight or flight’ mode, where our heart starts to beat faster, and our blood starts pumping extra oxygen to our muscles. Our body produces adrenaline, giving us the strength to either fight the threat, or get away from it. The problem is our brain doesn’t always know the difference between a real threat and a perceived one. So, sometimes, we go into ‘fight or flight’ when our bodies don’t need all that extra energy, as there is nothing to fight or to flee from. All that extra energy has nowhere to go and it can present itself as anxiety.
