The expression ‘Time and tide wait for no man’ came to me the other day…

I had left the Fens to visit a business show at Birmingham’s NEC, something that I normally do on a regular basis, but suddenly realised I hadn’t done so since pre-COVID. Looking at my work diary I discovered that my last visit was in fact in January last year and I suddenly started thinking about how much had changed in our daily lives since then and also how quickly those months had passed by.

October sees Hallowe’en, after which unfortunately comes my birthday in November and on to Christmas and another New Year, but it only seems like yesterday since the same period last year.

Let’s all pray that we are now over the worst of the pandemic and the resulting restrictions as I for one plan to try and make every day of freedom count over the coming weeks and get out and about as much as possible… and I suggest you do too!

October Gardening Tips

ith autumn, comes the endless sea of leaves that provide a fantastic, free improver for the soil, in the form of leaf mould.

Although not providing as many nutrients to the soil as garden compost, leaf mould can add to soil structure and increase the ability of the soil to retain water. This way, it provides a good habitat for soil life such as beneficial bacteria and earthworms.

Leaf mould is also excellent when used in containers because of its ability to retain water.

An easy way to make leaf mould: • punch a few holes in the side of a black plastic bag, • rake leaves or use a leaf vacuum, which chops the leaves, • when full sprinkle with water, shake and tie, • the following autumn they can be used as a mulch or in two years can be used as a soil conditioner.

It is a busy month on the vegetable plot, clearing it of plant debris, composting and preparing for the cold months ahead.

Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now; although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them.

October is perfect for dividing large, oversized crowns of rhubarb: if established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and as it is not a fussy plant can be planted almost anywhere: so long as the ground

does not get waterlogged. It is also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees. Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans.

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets.

Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic.

Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you have not already done so, earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins, and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

• Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

By Bridget Hunter Great excitement! By the time you read this we will have restarted our monthly meetings.

The September meeting was our AGM and a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the foundation of our society. Lots of happy memories were shared of the meetings, outings and events we have enjoyed over the past twenty years. Also, the progress we have made as a society.

NEXT MEETING Thursday, October 28th in Wisbech Library from 7pm-9pm. Our speaker will be Margaret LAKE, her talk will be about the historic Wisbech Pageant.

It should be an interesting talk about an exciting time in Wisbech. Everyone welcome, members’ free, visitors a £2 donation. November 25th will be ’Sharing our Research” including how we store and display it including a fascinating display of members’ family trees etc.

COMPUTER RESEARCH SESSIONS By the time you read this we will have held two of our research sessions and are looking forward to holding two each month. You can find us willing to help you get started or help you continue your family research. In Wisbech Library on the first Tuesday of each month from 10am-12pm. Our team can also show you how to use all the library facilities for FREE. The second session is at Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay on the second Monday of each month from 11am-2.30pm. You will find us in The Barn restaurant. Everyone welcome.

INTERESTING FACTS Have you ever wondered how place names came to be? There are so many strange place names I find in intriguing. I have come across some odd names during my family research including UGLY & NASTY in Hertfordshire and a place named ONE HOUSE which is the site of where once the workhouse stood alone.

I looked in my trusty research book and found the following. Please note Ref DB 1086 - in the Doomsday Book. OE - spelling in old English.

WISBECH DB1086 Wisbece OE, possibly meaning ‘marshy-meadow or ridge.’ WALSOKEN 1086 DB Walsocne, meaning ‘jurisdictional district near the Roman Bank.’ WALPOLE St ANDREW & St PETER 1086 DB, meaning ‘pool by the Roman bank.’ LEVERINGTON c.1130, meaning ‘estate associated with a man called Leofhere,’ OE name. Could you make use of the new SUPER-DEDUCTION ALLOWANCE?

I

n this year’s spring Budget, the Chancellor announced the new super-deduction allowance. Chris Goad, partner at Stephenson Smart’s Wisbech office, explains this new allowance and its relationship to Annual Investment Allowance.

What is super-deduction allowance?

Super-deduction works alongside the Annual Investment Allowance and gives 130 percent deduction against the purchase of new plant and machinery. However, it is only applicable to companies and for the purchase of new equipment. There is no upper expenditure limit on super-deduction.

Example: PURCHASING A NEW TRACTOR FOR £100,000

Also announced was a 50% first-year allowance for assets that would ordinarily qualify for the Special Rate Pool. However, if you have any remaining Annual Investment Allowance to use you should utilise that first to get 100% deduction rather than 50% deduction.

What is Annual Investment Allowance?

Annual Investment Allowance gives 100% deduction against business profits for the purchase of qualifying plant and machinery.

The current expenditure limit is one million pounds until December 31st, 2021, when it will drop to £200,000. Any expenditure in excess of this limit goes into a Main Pool or Special Rate Pool for tax purposes and attracts Capital Allowances at either 18% or 6% per annum.

Do vehicles qualify for super-deduction?

Commercial vehicles such as lorries and vans do but cars do not. However, electric cars still qualify for the 100 percent First Year Allowances.

Pumpkin Soup AUTUMNAL

Did you know, the word ‘pumpkin’ comes from the Greek word ‘pepon’ which means ‘large melon’? Highly nutritious and rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, they are incredibly healthy and make a wonderful, hearty soup!

Method

Serves 6

Ingredients

1 Preheat the oven to 200˚C/Gas 7

750g pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed 2 carrots, coarsely chopped 2 onions, cut into wedges 2 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large potato, sliced 1 litre water 2 or 3 cubes chicken stock, crumbled 250ml double cream 1 tsp ground nutmeg 1 tsp ground black pepper Salt to taste Sourced from www.allrecipes.co.uk

2 Place the pumpkin, carrots and onions in a baking dish or roasting tin. Drizzle with the vegetable oil.

3 Bake in the preheated oven for forty minutes, until soft but not blackened.

4 In a large saucepan over a medium heat, bring the water and crumbled stock cubes to the boil. Cook the potato in simmering water until soft, for about twenty minutes.

5 Combine the potato and water with the roasted vegetables and puree in a liquidiser or food processor until smooth. Return to the pan over low heat and stir in the cream, nutmeg, pepper and salt. Heat gently, then serve with an extra dollop of cream and some crusty bread.

NATURE SITES CAN HELP PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH By Steve Barclay MP

T

here are pockets of the constituency which are often great to visit but which many people have not yet discovered, and one such is Gault Wood in March.

Located near March Golf Club, a team of volunteers transformed what was a wheat field in 1994 to now a sixteen-acre wood with ten thousand trees. It was great to visit again and tour the site with members of the Woodland Trust and local volunteers to hear about how nature sites can help with people's mental health and wellbeing, and the value of planting more trees as part of the planning process.

I am keen to see sites like this expanded and am working to promote more nature sites with public access, given the wider health benefits this offers.

Six years ago, Wisbech Tennis Club had only four grass courts, which were often unplayable due to the weather, with no floodlights and a chemical toilet. So, the official opening of the two new hard courts at Wisbech Tennis Club marked a remarkable transformation for a club that now boasts two clay courts, floodlights, a children’s court and clubhouse. It’s a huge tribute to the hard work and dedication of Sue Beel, Jane Page, Wendy Cropp, Sue Pitcher and all the members that have put in a massive amount of work to bring this to fruition.

I’m delighted that flood defence projects in our constituency will benefit from almost £6.5million of investment over the next year, which builds on the ongoing work from my flooding summit meeting earlier this year which sought to prioritise schemes in our area. The Government is investing £5.2 billion in flood and coastal defences over the next six years to better protect 336,000 properties.

About one thousand schemes in England are targeted during the first year – including eight in North East Cambridgeshire. They are: Needham & Laddus Culvert Replacement £230,000; Ouse Washes Reservoir Section 10 Works £5,138,272; Hostmoor Avenue Watercourse Flood Alleviation Scheme in March £28,839; Tydd St Giles Pipe Lining £25,000; Mouth Lane Pumping Station Refurbishment £85,000; works arising from the Littleport and Downham Integrated Drainage Board Strategy £20,000; Middle Level Commissioners Bank Raising Scheme £900,000; and River Delph Improvements £60,000.

Residents who have suffered from flooding know how traumatising it can be and this investment is very welcome to ensure we maintain a focus on this issue. DEFRA is also due to set out further action to improve the access and availability of flood insurance for those at risk. I will continue to work with local stakeholders including our drainage boards, Cambridgeshire County Council, Fenland and East Cambs District Councils and Anglian Water to highlight the need for further action locally to support those homes most affected.

While the public consultation on the Wisbech incinerator proposal is over, my campaigning hasn’t stopped. I have met with local business leaders and was joined by the Mayor of Wisbech, Councillor Andrew Lynn, putting up posters across the town alongside the leaflets that went out. I commissioned an expert report in response to the developer’s consultation.

The report identifies multiple flaws with the consultation, inaccurate and misleading information presented by the developer, and adverse effects from the scheme which are not accurately reflected in the developer’s consultation documentation. It is damning.

I will continue to do all I can to lead opposition to this flawed proposal.

NEW PLAY SET FOR KEY THEATRE

E

astern Angles will bring brand new theatre to local audiences with Our White Skoda Octavia being performed at Peterborough’s Key Theatre on November 5th and 6th as part of a month-long tour.

Written by Shamser Sinha, this moving play shines a light on the struggles of contemporary life as one family juggles bills, dreams and taxi-driving schemes.

It’s said it was inspired by conversations with taxidrivers and residents of Peterborough and Ipswich held in 2018 as part of an Arts Council funded research project.

Set in a small town in the East of England, just before the credit crunch of 2007, Amjad decides to take up taxi-driving. His days take on the rhythm of a drum. But when money is tight and Rabia’s stifled ambitions hang heavy in the air, even the songs of John Denver or the scent of a Chitral rose are not enough to mend the cracks.

Shamser Sinha said: “Part of who we are is in other people, and part of us is in them. No more so than

with families and the places they live. I guess that was my inspiration.”

Spanning over a decade, Our White Skoda Octavia follows the Afridi family as they try to remain optimistic in the face of relationship troubles, health difficulties and financial worries.

An atmospheric tabla drumscape accompanies them through to their story’s bittersweet conclusion.

Creative producer Karen Goddard added: “It’s been really fascinating to see how the story has evolved to include so many aspects of family life, it has a real mix of humour and poignancy in it which I hope people will enjoy.”

Will increased taxes affect you?

To help meet the bill for growing costs of health and social care, the government has increased by 1.25% both National Insurance and Dividend Tax from April 2022. Nick Edgley explains what it could mean to you.

The controversial NI increase affects employees, employers, self-employed and the NICs paid on P11D benefits like company cars and private health care. It applies to employed, including deemed employees, self-employed individuals and Partners earning above specific thresholds.

Employers will be responsible for the NI increase for those employees earning above the Class 1 secondary threshold.

From April 2023, the increases will be legislated separately as a ‘health and social care levy’ and NIC rates will return to the 2021/22 levels.

This will also extend the levy to individuals over the state pension age in employment or self-employment. As that group is currently exempt from paying NIC the increases which will hit from April 2023.

Parallel to the levy, the government has announced a 1.25% increase in Dividend Tax rates from April 1, 2022, taking rates to: • 8.75% for basic rate taxpayers • 33.75% for higher rate taxpayers • 39.35% for additional rate taxpayers It is expected that these increases will also apply to Trust Tax rates as the current wording does not exclude this but the £2,000 dividend allowance will remain.

e have been organising days out since the early 1990s when the children were small, starting with ‘Disney on Ice’, so that they could share the experience with their extended family and friends, gradually adding other ones for them to enjoy, such as Legoland, Woburn Safari Park, and Cadbury World.

On taking over the local Girls’ Brigade company in 1994 we turned these ideas into fundraising events for the Girls’ Brigade, opening them up to the local community. I resigned from The Girls’ Brigade in 2005, but people within the local community still wanted us to organise days out for them, so in 2006 we started building it up to what it is today and are now trading as Hallam Travel.

WINDOWS 11 PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

Microsoft has finally announced that Windows 11 will launch on October 5th this year and that all eligible PCs currently running on Windows 10 will be able to upgrade to this new version free of charge. The roll out will be staggered, meaning that the upgrade will only be available to select devices initially, with all eligible devices being able to upgrade by mid-2022.

So, what are the new features that Microsoft has been teasing us about over the past few months? Well, many of them are designed to help improve our new work-from-home focused work lives.

The start menu has moved to the bottom-centre of the screen by default but can be moved back to the bottom-left with a settings tweak. What the menu does has also changed. For decades, it’s

essentially been a list of programs, utilities and folders. In Windows 11 it will be a lot smarter, showing recently and frequently used programs and files, regardless of which device you last used, hopefully meaning you can find what you’re looking for more quickly. For example, if your job will see you working from both home and the office, this could be a big timesaver as you won’t have to scramble around looking for a document you were just working on.

It’s not all about work though, as Windows 11 also boasts the best Windows gaming experience yet, including much faster load times and other tweaks. There will be improved integration between Windows 11 and Xbox Game Pass as Microsoft continues to push its excellent game subscription service.

Last, but certainly not least, is the addition of Android apps (coming mid 2022) on Windows 11 and due to a complete

overhaul of the Microsoft app store, the number of programs available should increase dramatically.

Do you have to upgrade to Windows 11? Absolutely not if your current computer is running Windows 10. Windows 11 is currently an optional update as Windows 10 will continue to receive security updates until October 2025.

It is important to note that, due to the nature of its new features, computers will need to be slightly more powerful to run Windows 11. The safest assumption to make is that if your computer was made in late 2017 or after, it will probably be compatible with Windows 11. But this is not a hard and fast rule as there are some technical variants meaning it is impossible to give a definite yes or no answer. Debt Help Charity Warns Homelessness Could Rise in Fenland Because of Rent Arrears

he Fenland Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre based at Centenary and Wisbech Baptist Church has been delivering free debt help to people across the area for more than thirteen years and throughout the pandemic.

They are urging people with rent arrears to seek free debt help as soon as possible.

With measures such as the evictions ban now at an end and the notice period from landlords to tenants reduced from six months to four months, along with the furlough scheme due to have come to an end on September 30th, it is expected that more people will need to know where to turn for free help with problem finances.

The sooner people get in touch, the quicker they can get support and solutions in place.”

CAP client, Dylan*, said: “I had to have an operation on my kidney and wasn’t able to work after that. I wasn’t eligible to claim benefits, which meant I struggled to pay my rent and ended up in trouble. I was evicted from my home and found myself in a lot of debt with rent and Council Tax. It felt like I was completely lost, alone and in the dark.

OCTOBER 31ST? WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT THEN?

allowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st.

The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture.

Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.

Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them.

“Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, “Trick or treat?” The “trick” part of “trick or treat” is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en.

It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

The Other Clarkson – part one Most people in Wisbech and the Fens have heard of Thomas Clarkson. In town there is a massive statue, sixty-eight feet (20.6 m) high with a larger than life figure of Thomas which cost more £2035 (the equivalent of £134,000 today) to erect.

As well as this there is a Clarkson Avenue, a Clarkson Academy, a Clarkson surgery and there even used to be a pub called the Clarkson’s Arms.

But how many know that there was another Clarkson who did so much for the oppressed Negro slaves? The other Clarkson was Thomas’s younger brother, John.

His start in life was not an easy one.

He was only two when his father, a schoolteacher at Wisbech Grammar School, died. He only had his mother, aged thirty-one, who suffered with crippling rheumatism, to look after him and his brother and sister.

At the tender age of twelve, John was sent to Portsmouth to join the Navy and serve on the HMS Monarch.

One of his first jobs was to stand on the deck during armed conflict with a pistol and orders to shoot anyone who tried to run from the terrible scene. In the first two years on board, he had to watch more than thirty floggings which always took place at noon in front of the whole ship’s company. The living conditions for these men were virtually unbearable. It had a lasting effect on young John and it led him to believe kindness and humanity were much more effective in controlling a ship’s crew.

After five and a half years and having served on nine different ships, he was made lieutenant and was given leave. He returned home to Wisbech.

After all the horrible things he had seen he backed his brother and supported the Anti-slavery campaign and was one of the twelve founder members of the ‘Peace Society’. It was at this time that Henry Smaethman came up with the idea of a free settlement in West Africa that the casualties 44

of the slave trade and the American war could get to in safety and live the rest of their lives in peace. At the time they had been transported temporarily to the eastern part of Canada, Nova Scotia.

The British government agreed to pay for this project to take place and John travelled to Nova Scotia to organise the transportation of the people who wanted to go to Sierra Leone. He did meet some opposition, but there were plenty who wanted to return to their Africa, more than twelve hundred. For them, John was their ‘Moses’, taking them back to their promised land. There were so many that John had to use fifteen ships. All of this had to be arranged and these slaves were going home in a lot more comfort than when they came. John chose a ship called Lucretia and had Charles Taylor, the only doctor, to sail with him.

Because of this the elderly and sick were transported in John’s ship.

On January 15th, 1792, the ships set sail for Freetown. Their journey was not to be easy.

They encountered storms and high seas sending the boats apart. John went down with fever and had violent headaches. In the end he was so ill that he ordered Wickham to take over command and he went below. For a whole month he lay helpless with a raging fever and Dr Charles Taylor feared John was dying. And then…

He lay still for twenty-four hours, completely motionless. Dr Taylor sadly pronounced John Clarkson dead. They had called him their Moses, but had they forgotten that in the Old Testament, Moses led the Israelites to the Promised Land but died before they got there? Was this going to happen again?

The news quickly spread amongst the other fourteen boats. John had saved them; they would not forget him. With a sad and heavy heart, they prepared his body to be committed to the sea…

Tributes have been made to Second World War veteran John McIntosh who has died.

Wisbech Mayor, Councillor Andrew Lynn; Deputy Mayor, Councillor Susan Wallwork; and the other members of Wisbech Town Council expressed their sadness at learning of the passing of Mr McIntosh on August 29th.

He was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur by French Consul, Jean-Claude Lafontaine in a special ceremony at his Wisbech home in 2016, a year before becoming one of three distinguished Army heroes who were presented with the honorary freedom of Wisbech.

of gratitude for their services to the country and in recognition of the high esteem in which they are held by the community of Wisbech.

John McIntosh was one of three Army veterans who were honoured in 2016

Cllr Steve Tierney, who had been Mayor of Wisbech at that time, proposed that Mr McIntosh, Gerald Fleming and Ronald Sanderson receive the honorary freedom of the town as an act

During the Second World War, Mr McIntosh was drafted into the Army in June of 1943 at the age of nineteen. He was initially posted to Leeds and Edinburgh for training with the 1st Highland Light Infantry. From there they were sent onto Sittingbourne in Kent for further intense training before being shipped for deployment from Newhaven across the channel to Normandy.
