North Hykeham North Hykeham lies to the north of the District, a close neighbour to Lincoln, with regular rail and bus networks linking the two. North Hykeham is included in a city-wide Hire Bike Scheme, providing an ideal way to explore its five recreational parks as well as nearby Lincolnshire Road Transport Museum and Whisby Nature Park. Sleaford

Sleaford is a traditional market town, just 30 minutes’ drive from Lincoln with the beautiful St Deny’s Church, a market place and abundant history. The River Slea running through the town once brought barges to Navigation Wharf via the Sleaford Navigation. The Navigation was a key trade route, central to the town’s burgeoning growth and brought prosperity to many, plus a lasting heritage which can be explored using the new ‘When in Sleaford’ trail. Aviation Lincolnshire is renowned as the ‘Home of the Royal Air Force’ and has a vast aviation heritage. The county’s flat, open countryside and its location made it ideal for the development of airfields during World War I, and in World War II, Lincolnshire became the most important home of Bomber Command. April 1, 2018 marks the centenary of the Royal Air Force and Lincolnshire will play a key part in the celebrations. North Kesteven is home to three operational airfields serving the modern-day RAF, while former airfields, museums and memorials are testament to the bravery of the men and women who served here during the most turbulent of times.

International Bomber Command Centre The International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) has been created to provide a world-class facility to serve as a point for recognition, remembrance and reconciliation for Bomber Command.
IBCC is the only single national or international facility that exists to commemorate Bomber Command. The height of the memorial spire is the wingspan of the Avro Lancaster and the centre tells the history and heritage of Bomber Command for present and future generations through interactive displays and an extensive digital archive.

What to do
Lincolnshire earned the title of ‘Bomber County’ when the Headquarters of both 1 and 5 Groups and a third of all the UK’s stations were based in the county. This deep connection and linked history defined the location for the new centre on Canwick Hill in the north of the District.

Cogglesford Watermill

Millers have produced flour on this site for over a thousand years. Stone ground flour produced in the mill is sold in the shop together with locally sourced produce and goods. Milling days take place on the second Sunday of the month from March to December. Special events also run throughout the year. Group and school visits are welcome by prior arrangement. Navigation House
Navigation Wharf, Carre Street, Sleaford, NG34 7TW This original canal company office, built in 1838, is now an impressive, refurbished grade two listed building that stands in the old public wharf area, now known as Navigation Yard. The building, thought to be the only one of its kind still in existence, has a heritage theme covering the early development of the new River Slea and portrays the story of the Navigation and its significant impact on Sleaford’s history. Welbourn Forge

Heckington Windmill Hale Road, Heckington, NG34 9JW
Standing out against Lincolnshire’s big skies, this unique eight-sailed windmill forms the centrepiece of a complex set of historic buildings where visitors can experience how food is produced using natural power. The whole site has benefited from a major programme of investment which has restored the whole Victorian industrial site surrounding the windmill and created a contemporary visitor attraction with things for the whole family to see and do. The on-site 8 Sail Brewery champions award winning craft beer including the Rolling Stone ale which uses malt ground in the mill, whilst the Miller’s Tearoom allows you to taste home baked breads and cakes in the shadow of the windmill which supplies its flour. This unique eight-sailed windmill is the only one of its type left in the world. It is now in full working order so when the wind is right you can step inside the heart of the machine to sense the power, and of course see the ingenuity and engineering behind the milling process.

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum

Cranwell Aviation Heritage Museum portrays the fascinating story of this historic establishment from its early days as a Royal Naval Air Service base to the current day. What to do
Countryside We are proud to be home to a variety of landscapes, ancient woodlands, public art and historic buildings. The fascinating history woven into the landscape extends from the Roman waterways of the Car Dyke, through medieval settlements to the more recent airfields of World War II. There is evidence of the past everywhere; Roman roads, deserted medieval villages, lost priories and wonderful Medieval churches.

Ridges & Furrows Arts & Heritage Trail Project The 30-mile Ridges & Furrows Trail will take you through the heart of Lincolnshire, exploring the distinctive landscape, traditional villages and unique artwork.
Ridges & Furrows
The route mirrors the Spires & Steeples trail on the eastern side of the District, providing an ideal opportunity to link the two for a long distance walk. The trail is being mapped out on the iFootpath app and new trail signage will shortly start appearing.

Discovering the History of Sleaford Back by popular demand! Join local historian, Simon Pawley to discover the evolution of Sleaford’s wharf area. Constructed in the early 1790s, Sleaford Navigation had a difficult beginning. Originally designed to run through the town to a wharf on its western side, the Navigation Company found itself running out of money and forced to end its project east of the town centre. How they dealt with this crisis would turn out to have a long-lasting influence on the future development of the town. Navigation House
