Stromness A long established seaport, the old town has a charming and winding main street, steeped in history and ready to be explored. West Mainland With its many inland lochs, the West Mainland is ideal for a leisurely tour. No trip is complete without a visit to the lovely Brough of Birsay and the dramatic cliff walks. East Mainland and over the Barriers You can reach South Ronaldsay across the Churchill Barriers, so don’t go home without visiting the Neolithic Tomb of the Eagles and the Italian Chapel.

Flotta
With its oil terminal and history as a military base in both world wars, there’s a lot of recent history to see on Flotta. Highlights include the Rocket Batteries, St. Vincent Pier, Buchanan Battery and the Peerie Museum. Photographers love the 360 degree panorama from the Witter.
Shapinsay
A half hour ferry ride from Kirkwall, Shapinsay offers Elwick Mill, the standing stone of Mor Stein, Broch of Burroughston and the RSPB site at Mill Dam. The heritage centre in Balfour village is a good place to start, before heading to the RSPB reserve, WWII sites and the many beautiful beaches.

Sanday by name and sandy by nature, the best beaches are to be found here. On Eday, explore ancient chambered tombs, the Norse Castle of Stackel Brae and 17th century relics.

On Stronsay, visit the natural arch at the Vat of Kirbuster, the natural swimming pool at Bluthers Geo and the Picts houses at Lamb Ness. Stronsay is fantastic for cycling.
• Grobust, Noup Head & Rapness on Westray If you only have time to visit one of the North Isles, Westray has a huge amount to offer, including puffins from May to July.
Rousay, Egilsay & Wyre
Rousay has been nicknamed ‘The Egypt of the North’ due to its richness in archaeological sites over 166 - including Midhowe Broch and Cairn. On Egilsay you can walk around the well-preserved Norse church of St Magnus. Wyre boasts a castle built in 1150 by the legendary giant, Cubbie Roo.

Westray & Papa Westray
A tour of Westray offers many attractions. Start at the Heritage Centre and include Noltland Castle and Cross Kirk. The world’s shortest scheduled flight takes you to Papa Westray and the oldest house in Northern Europe – the Knap of Howar – which predates the pyramids by over 1,200 years.

North Ronaldsay
The most remote of the islands, tradition thrives here. The coastal walks take you past many landmarks, including the Broch of Burrian (an Iron Age settlement), the New Lighthouse and the original beacon, built in 1789. The 13-mile sheep dyke surrounds the island and keeps the seaweed-eating sheep on the shore and off the agricultural land.

Walking on Orkney takes you into beautiful open spaces and lets you lose yourself in nature. There are plenty of signposted routes, so you can choose an easy ramble or a long strenuous trek. And don’t forget your camera as the scenery is magnificent. Cycling is also a pleasure with many quiet roads and dramatic views. Most islands are fairly flat, letting you get up some speed and cover the miles with ease. Or if you want to leave the tarmac behind, you’ll find miles of tracks to follow. Best of all, bikes go free on ferries so you can see somewhere new every day.
If your sport relies on the wind, Orkney is a fantastic destination, providing a year-round playground for power kiting, wind surfing and kite surfing. Favourite locations include Scapa Beach near Kirkwall and the Bay of Skaill on the west Mainland. Big waves and good breaks make Skaill the serious surfers’ choice, and you can hire boards and wetsuits locally. Keen sailors return year after year to tackle Orkney’s challenging winds and currents, and there are races throughout the summer months if you enjoy friendly competition.

Orkney’s high average wind speeds, uncrowded beaches and clear waters offer some of the best kite surfing conditions in Europe. Serious surfers love the winter swells which can reach up to 15m or 50ft!

thrillseeker Rod is a well-known technical diver and diving author, specialising in shipwreck history and exploration. He has five books to his name to date, including Dive Scapa Flow, the definitive reference guide for diving the scuttled German WWI High Seas Fleet shipwrecks in Orkney, as well as his more recent true-life diving adventure books Into the Abyss and The Darkness Below. Rod has dived around Orkney for more than 30 years, and has an intimate knowledge of the islands and tidal characteristics, having been the first to locate, dive and identify many previously unknown shipwrecks. The most famous wrecks are the scuttled WWI German fleet lying at the bottom of Scapa Flow. The three battleships and four light cruisers provide fascinating expeditions. But there are many more wrecks to explore, such as the blockships in Burra Sound and the UB116 German WWI submarine in Hoxa Sound.

Orkney’s clear waters, plentiful marine life and many wrecks make the islands one of the top cold water dive locations, attracting divers from across the world.

Anglers will relish the rich fishing on the many lochs. On the West Mainland alone you can choose from Harray, Stenness, Boardhouse, Hundland and Swannay – all stocked with brown trout. Further afield, you will find lochs such as Bea, North and Roos on Sanday, Swartmill on Westray, and Meikle Water on Stronsay. The brown trout season runs from 15th March to 6th October. If sitting beside a quiet loch isn’t exciting enough, why not charter a boat and benefit from the extensive local knowledge of one of Orkney’s excellent, qualified skippers. Giant conger eels can be caught in the depths of Scapa Flow, and the sand and shingle surrounding the wrecks yield other species such as turbot, large plaice and brill.

Orkney for
Time Travellers Every step you take on Orkney is infused with the history of civilisation. Some of our landscapes remain unchanged since long before the time of the Great Pyramids. In fact, Orkney is virtually unique in offering an unbroken timeline of sites dating from nearly 6,000 years ago to the present. And history is still being written here. Take your time and take it all in. The Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage site is in the West Mainland. Here you can walk in the steps of our ancestors and gain a unique insight into how people lived over 5,000 years ago. Skara Brae is the perfect place to start. As you stroll around this prehistoric stone village, it’s easy to envisage it as a thriving place where people raised families, prayed to their gods and lived off the land and sea. Maeshowe, Europe’s finest chambered cairn, gives you a sense of the capabilities of the stone masons and architects during the Neolithic Age. The best time to visit is around the winter solstice, when the setting sun illuminates the passage and interior of the monument. But it’s when you reach the Ring of Brodgar and walk among the remaining 27 megaliths of a stone circle over 104 metres wide that you fully realise the power and determination of our predecessors.
Incredibly, Orkney continues to rewrite history with the discovery in 2003 of another Neolithic site even bigger than Skara Brae – the Ness of Brodgar. You can be part of uncovering the past by visiting the excavations at this site during July and August. Large buildings, which may be Neolithic temples rather than houses, have been discovered.
Many inscribed stones, mace heads, painted and carved objects, along with large amounts of grooved ware pottery have been found at this exciting site. Beyond the Mainland, there are many more ancient sites to enjoy. The island of Rousay is known as the ‘Egypt of the North’ due to the number of well-preserved monuments. Eday has many Neolithic chambered cairns to explore, and on Papay you’ll find the Knap of Howar – the oldest standing stone-built house in Western Europe.

Since the inscription of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site he has been involved in fieldwork and research around the monuments, including the discovery and on-going excavation of the unique Neolithic complex at the Ness of Brodgar.

Orkney Shaped by Vikings, rogue Scotsmen & World Wars The Norse Earldom dominated Orkney’s culture for hundreds of years from the late 700s AD. The 10th and 11th centuries were the peak of Norse influence in the isles, with many strong characters, including Earls Thorfinn, Magnus and Rognvald, dominating the history of the times. The ultimate statement of their power is the wonderful St Magnus Cathedral which dominates Kirkwall, founded in 1137. In 1468, the islands were mortgaged to Scotland when Scotland’s King James III married a Danish princess. Kirkwall was made a Royal Burgh in 1486 and new landmarks began to spring up. Today you can see the ruins of elaborate palaces in Kirkwall and Birsay, built by the notorious Robert Stewart and his son, Patrick. Robert was the bastard half-brother of Mary Queen of Scots. Still standing is a fine example of Baronial architecture, Balfour Castle, built in 1847 on Shapinsay. Balfour itself is a conservation village that will take you back in time to life in the 18th century. You can even stay in period properties on Orkney, some dating back 500 years.
WW1 1914 Outbreak of First World War
The Balfour Estate is a prime example of agricultural improvements, which started in Orkney in the 18th century. The next big influence on Orkney’s landscape came in the 20th century, as it played a crucial part in both world wars. Many sections of the coastline are dotted with gun emplacements, watch towers and concrete bunkers. Scapa Flow was HQ for the British Home Fleet in both World Wars. It was here in 1918 that the German High Seas Fleet was interned after the Armistice, and then scuttled at midsummer 1919. The Scapa Flow Visitor Centre at Lyness on Hoy brims with photos, videos, texts, artefacts and more which bring all the events to life. After HMS Royal Oak was sunk by a U-boat in 1939, the Churchill Barriers were built to block the eastern approaches to Scapa Flow. If you cross them to the little island of Lamb Holm you can visit the Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners of war.

We’ve been welcoming visitors for over 10,000 years The first written reference to the islands is by Pytheas the Greek in c.325BC, but they were inhabited before that, with the first people arriving as long ago as c.8000BC. These Mesolithic people were few in number, but by c.4000BC the Neolithic Age started in Orkney with settled farming. A prosperous economy lasted for over 1,000 years.

Although there are few visible remains from the succeeding Bronze Age, in contrast the Iron Age was a period of renewed building of large structures. Over 100 brochs dot the landscape. Pieces of a Roman amphora dating to before 60AD were found at the Broch of Gurness, possibly supporting records that show a ‘King of Orkney’ submitted to Emperor Claudius at Colchester in 43AD. The Picts dominated the east of Scotland from Perth to Orkney until the Norse invasion in the late 700s. Their most visible legacies are the enigmatic symbol stones, some of which may be seen in the Orkney Museum. The Vikings wholly replaced the Picts and prospered on Orkney for hundreds of years. Besides St Magnus Cathedral, there are Norse longhouses, chapels and farms to explore. Plus many artefacts in the museum.

A whalebone plaque from the Scar burial site which uncovered a Viking Age boat burial. Inside the boat were three skeletons. These people had been buried with grave goods including a brooch, a sword and the whalebone plaque.

Autumn
Visit in March, as the early flowers start to bloom, and you’ll catch the wintering birds before they return to the high Arctic. You’ll also see brown hares boxing in the fields, and oystercatchers hunting down by the seashore.
Autumn is the time to see feathered rarities. As the seas become wilder, it gets easier to spot unusual birds such as sooty shearwater and storm petrels which come to shelter close to shore. On calm days, you may spot migrating whales, porpoises and dolphins. The landscape takes on the colours of the season with deer grass and glowing rowan berries. Pupping grey seals can be seen.
Summer This is the time to see the teeming seabird cities on Westray, Copinsay and at Marwick Head. Listen for corncrakes’ night time calls across the farmland. On calm days, you may be lucky and see minke whales, orcas and basking sharks. You’ll definitely see common seal mothers and their pups. And as the great yellow bumblebees take to the air, the rare Primula scotica comes into flower.

Orkney is the best place in the UK for seabirds, with 21 breeding species. There are 13 RSPB reserves across the islands, providing superb places to watch resident and migrant birds. With many guest houses, B&Bs and self-catering cottages close to prime birding sites, you have an excellent choice of accommodation. With coast, cliffs, wetland and moorland habitats, Orkney is a place where you can see waterfowl, waders, raptors, seabirds and possibly corncrake, all within a few miles. In spring and summer, you can expect to see skylark, meadow pipit, red-throated diver, curlew, lapwing, hen harrier, merlin, kestrel, snipe, short-eared owl, reed bunting, twite, stonechat and wheatear.

On the coast, you will find fulmars, black guillemot, razorbill, kittiwake, peregrine, great skua, gannet, shag, cormorant, eider duck and waders. A perennial favourite, the puffin, can be seen from April to July. The map (above) shows you prime puffin-watching sites.

In autumn and winter, Orkney is a fantastic place to see migrating and wintering birds. Migrants include redwing, siskin, brambling, pink-footed geese, greylag geese, waxwing and snow bunting. Among wintering birds are long-tailed duck, divers, shag, Slavonian grebe, whooper swan, thrushes, purple sandpiper, turnstone, guillemots and ringed plovers.

Orkney’s wild flowers From early spring, Orkney’s cliffs, meadows and moorland burst into colour. The show starts yellow with gorse, coltsfoot and lesser celadine. The tiny Primula scotica appears on cliff tops for the first time in May, flowering again in July.
As summer builds, you will see heathers, orchids, cotton grass, ragged robin, sundew, yellow rattle, St John’s wort, grass of Parnassus, eyebright, mountain everlasting and sea plantain as well as many others.

North Ronaldsay Sheep

In June and July you can see common seals and their pups basking in haul-out sites. From October to December, grey seals give birth and pups spend about 21 days on land. The map (opposite) shows you the best seal-watching areas.
As the name suggests, these sheep are native to this island. As a breed, they have changed very little in 5,000 years, and today there are about 3,700 roaming North Ronaldsay. They feed on seaweed, making the meat virtually fat-free and very tender.
Breathtaking cliff walks are easy to find in Orkney. Visit Hoy to see the magnificent red sandstone cliffs – at 350m the tallest vertical sea cliffs in the UK. Travel to Stronsay to see the famous Vat of Kirbuster – a natural arch. Some of the most popular cliff walks are Yesnaby, Marwick Head and the Brough of Birsay on the west coast of the Mainland.

The Orkney International Science Festival takes place every year at the beginning of September. It’s a kaleidoscopic way to see Orkney and get insights into the past, present and future – and hear brilliant people on sparkling form. It’s a festival of ideas, often from the frontiers – of space, of life in the ocean depths, of the forces moving continents. There is news of the latest developments harnessing the power of wave and tide in Orkney waters. There is archaeology and Arctic exploration, astronomy and art/science exploration – all in historic and atmospheric settings. The seven-day programme is packed with events including talks, outings, exhibitions, concerts and even ceilidhs! The Ba’ is a traditional game of mass football, contested every Christmas and New Year’s Day in the streets of Kirkwall between the Uppies and the Doonies.
Head Brewer, Andrew Fulton, joined the Orkney Brewery in 1994 after graduating from University.
Every year competition is fierce, with enthusiastic farmers from all over the islands entering their livestock at the County Show.
The 2013 New Year’s Day Boys’ Ba’ was won by Doonie Taylor Pilkington, 15, who has competed in the event since he was 8!
The brewery produces a solid range of cask and bottled ales including the twice-crowned CAMRA beer of Scotland, Dark Island, and the fruity 8.5% knockout juice Skull Splitter.

On show Orkney has a world-renowned agricultural heritage which attracts many visitors to the islands each year. Farming has been a way of life here for 5,000 years, since Neolithic farmers raised crops and livestock on the fertile land. Things have changed since then of course, with Orkney now a modern farming community with a very successful industry. Produce raised in Orkney is famous across the UK, particularly Orkney beef. In fact, Orkney has the highest density of beef cattle in Europe as well as being the biggest dairy area north of Stirling. A cornerstone of the calendar is the Orkney County Show, which is the culmination of more than a week of agricultural shows around Orkney. Held every August, it is a fantastic opportunity to see some of Orkney’s quality livestock, and it attracts more than 10,000 visitors each year.
This is an agricultural show at its very best and counts among the top events of its kind held across the UK each summer. Farmers come to parade their livestock and to compete for a show champion. Apart from cattle you will also find vintage car rallies, show jumping, dog trials, as well as sheep, goats and poultry competing for awards. In addition, there are also over 90 trade stands and food outlets, highlighting the quality of local produce and crafts. If you are visiting Orkney in August this is an event not to be missed – there is plenty of entertainment for all the family!

Orkney is a world leader in renewable energy development, and has been powering homes and businesses through wind technology for decades. The world’s first modern wind turbine was tested on Costa Hill in the 1950s when Orkney was leading the development of wind energy; now there are over 470 wind turbines. Orkney’s electricity is amongst the greenest in the UK with the islands often providing in excess of 100 per cent of Orkney’s electricity demand from renewables, making it an energy exporter. Today, Orkney is also leading the world in the development of marine renewable energy, and is home to The European Marine Energy Centre: the world’s first and only real-sea facility for testing machines that generate electricity from waves and tides. With the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the West coast, and the tides rushing between islands to and from the North Sea, Orkney is the perfect testing ground for marine energy converters.
See renewable energy being generated There are various sites around Orkney where you can see these leading technologies being developed and tested, including EMEC’s wave test site at Billia Croo near Stromness, and the tidal test site at the Fall of Warness off the northern isle of Eday. When devices are not being tested on site, you may spot them at one of Orkney’s marine renewables port facilities at Hatston Pier in Kirkwall, Lyness Pier in Hoy, and Copland’s Dock in Stromness. Protecting the islands Every renewable energy project is undertaken with careful consideration of the environment, so that Orkney’s heritage, beauty and ecology are protected.

Peat was cut for fuel from the earliest times, with the name of one the cutting tools, tusker, coming from the Old Norse word torfskeri (literally peat cutter). The other is called a luggie. Some people still cut peat for fuel, but its main use today is by the Highland Park Distillery, where it is burned in the kiln to dry the malt. This gives the whisky its distinctive aroma and flavour.
Mills have been using water power on Orkney for hundreds of years. Click Mill on Dounby features a horizontal wheel, built in 1823. 50 years later, Boardhouse Mill was built in Birsay with a more modern vertical wheel.
Wind power has a long history here. Evidence shows that Orkney farmers used windmills in centuries gone by, and their stumps can still be seen on Sanday, North Ronaldsay and South Ronaldsay.

Travel by plane Watching the islands materialise beneath you as the plane starts its descent is a magical way to start your visit to Orkney. It only takes an hour to fly direct from Edinburgh, and there are also several daily flights from Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness and London. For international travellers, there are excellent connections to many airports.
