Celebrate Saskatoon’s Indigenous and Métis history and culture with rich experiences

Tânisi, a ̅ni ̅n, háu! Long before any bridge or building sat here, the area that is now called “Saskatoon” was a gathering place for the original peoples of this land. Today, Saskatoon is located on Treaty 6 Territory, and continues to be the proud gathering place of the Plains Cree, Dakota, Saulteaux, Nakoda, and Métis nations. As they have for many centuries, these people’s contributions as craftspeople, musicians, entertainers, entrepreneurs, neighbours, and beyond, are at the heart of Saskatoon’s story.

Dakota Dunes Casino Resort

Located on Dakota Whitecap Unceded Territory, Dakota Dunes is one of the province’s premiere resort experiences. Just 20 minutes from downtown YXE, this nationally acclaimed resort is applauded for its traditionally inspired décor, gorgeous views, and the award-winning Dakota Dunes Golf Links course. Whether you arrive for work, pleasure, or a combination of the two, you won’t want to leave anytime soon.

Wanuskewin Heritage Park

Wanuskewin; meaning “gathering place,” is a leader in the preservation of history and culture for both Métis and Plains Cree nations. Home to the longest ongoing archeological dig site in Canadian history, Wanuskewin plays a crucial role in documenting the peoples that have called this land home for more than 6000 years. With newly renovated meeting rooms and art galleries, as well as over 6 km of groomed trail, Wanuskewin continues its legacy as a gathering place today.

Batoche National Historic Site

At the Batoche National Historic Site, transport yourself to the year 1885 during the height of the Northwest Resistance. Learn about Métis resistance leaders Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont, how Métis people lived in the late 19th century, and get a fresh perspective on a conflict that would change a country forever.

Indigenous Cuisine

Saskatoon is known far and wide for its high-quality food scene, and this is in no small part due to the many exceptional Indigenous-led restaurants and eateries.

Moose Woods Home Fire Grill

Located at Dakota Dunes Casino and Resort, Moose Woods mixes traditional Dakota ingredients with bold modern flavours that your tastebuds won’t soon forget.

Han Wi Moon Dinner

For those looking for an Indigenous culinary experience like no other, Wanuskewin’s Han Wi Moon Dinner doesn’t disappoint. This three course meal experience is made from foraged ingredients. Dine outdoors and savour every moment while overlooking Opimihaw Creek, located at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.

Bannock Express

Saskatoon: The perfect city to build childhood memories

Saskatoon is a fun, familyfriendly city with something to offer everyone! You can find experiences that spark creativity, help to educate, and of course, that are just plain FUN. With this itinerary, your family will have an unforgettable YXE experience and create memories to last a lifetime.

Learn Your Summer Days Away

First stop, The Wonder Hub! More than a museum, the Nutrien Wonderhub brings out your kid’s creativity as they inquisitively discover the world around them. Each visit offers a unique experience, as kids explore the interactive exhibits in new and exciting ways. Parents, you might learn a few things as well! The Wonder Hub is always a big hit with the entire family.

Saskatoon has so many fun-filled activities to do with the entire family!

Find things to do with the kids in Saskatoon

Page 17 | Family Fun Want to enjoy the beautiful outdoor weather? The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo is the perfect place. The Zoo, with more than 80 species of animals, has wide, paved walking paths that are perfect for strollers and for kids to run alongside. Hop on the train which takes you through the zoo’s main attractions. There is also a beautiful playground inside the zoo grounds for kids and “kids at heart” to enjoy. After visiting all of the animals, lunch is a must! Enjoy a wiener roast and toasted marshmallows at one of the many picnic/BBQ pits located on the forestry farm grounds (wood is available for purchase). Finally, cap the evening off with a “friendly” family baseball game at one of the ball diamonds on the grounds.

We all scream for ice cream! A trip to Homestead Ice Cream or The Red Bus is a Saskatoon summer must.

Play, jump, ride, and slide

Another great outdoor location is Kinsmen Park. Located in downtown Saskatoon, Kinsmen Park is a kid-favourite spot to spend a summer day. The rides offer tremendous value and are great for kids of all ages. Kids won’t be able to get enough of the pony carousel, and parents will enjoy the ferris wheel, which provides beautiful views overlooking the South Saskatchewan River. There is also a train that takes you through the park, as well as a beautiful playground that has a fun splash area, a mini zipline, and a monstrous slide!

Eat & Explore

1. A favourite local breakfast or lunch spot - OEB.

Located on the beautiful

River Landing, the kids will love the waffles with whipped cream and fresh fruit. A guaranteed hit!

2. A Saskatoon Classic – Bus

Stop Refreshments. For a quick snack when you’re out and about downtown, try one of their hotdogs or a froyo mixed with real fruit. 3. What better way to end a summer night than with an ice cream cone from

Homestead Ice Cream.

There is no wrong option on the menu, but if you want your tastebuds to explode, try the “Triple Dip

Cheesecake”. WOW.
