Special events throughout the exhibition will highlight our history. Speakers, video, oral histories and demonstrations will tell our story of work. And a treasure trove of photographs of people and places we know and some no longer with us cannot help but spark a flood of ‘remember-when’ recollections.
Step inside CEPA, the Pell City Center for Education and the Performing Arts, and journey back to a time when our nation communicated through switchboards and operators. Young children labored long hours on towering mill looms, and horses provided transportation to and fro or delivered daily goods. It was a time when our young nation was growing up, just like many of us, and you will see it all and more as we explore The Way We Worked, a traveling exhibit of the Smithsonian Institution July 19 through August 23. The Smithsonian’s photographic and Inside Front Cover interactive displays will tell the story of how America worked over the past century and a half, and accompanying local displays put together by the Pell City Works Committee will explore how St. Clair Countians made their living. Adapted from an original exhibition developed by the National Archives, The Way We Worked explores how work became such a central element in American culture
Young and old alike will delight in an array of photographs, displays and artifacts that weave together the history of a nation and 3 7/8” (3.875”) a region at work. From farming to fishing, from manufacturing to retail, exhibits will detail our legacy of work.
by tracing the many changes that affected the workforce and work environments over the past 150 years. The exhibition draws from the Archives’ rich collections to tell this compelling story.
During the five-week exhibition, we will tell our own story of work, drawn from the archives of countless families whose roots run deep in Pell City and St. Clair County soil.
The exhibit is made possible in Alabama through a partnership of the Smithsonian and Alabama Humanities Foundation with support from Alabama Power Foundation and Norfolk Southern Railroad. It is part of the Museum on Main Street Program funded by the U.S. Congress.
The exhibition will feature daily tours led by knowledgeable docents who will tell America’s story of work Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Local exhibits will surround the Smithsonian centerpiece, exploring Pell City and St. Clair County’s heritage of work — then and now.
