Shaving, Decoded If you’re like most people, your only exposure to a straight razor shave comes from classic movies. Guys like Clint Eastwood and Robert DeNiro sit tall in a barber’s chair while a kindly gentleman with a steady hand takes care of the boss. There’s a certain boldness that comes with the straight razor shave. It’s a meticulous process with its own special tools, high-end supplies, and proper training. Since we’re in the business of shaving, we thought it only right to demystify this classic ritual.
temperature for a perfect shave. And by the way, it feels awesome.
It starts with the prep work.
Is that brush just for show?
A quality shave requires more than filling your sink full of foamy water. As the towels and shave lather are being warmed, a skilled shave artist studies your face’s shave grain – the different directions your beard grows. From there, he plots his course, knowing that no two faces are exactly the same.
After years of squirting shaving cream into your hands and finger painting your face, you might be a little skeptical about a high quality tool like this. But a good badger brush is a must. It helps exfoliate your skin and soften your beard. Yes, it’s made from real badger hair, so feel free to tease your Wisconsin friends. Now that you’ve learned a little more about the art, science, and technique of a straight razor shave, the next step is to experience it for yourself. So step up to the chair like a boss and get yourself a professional shave. It will be a welcome change from staring at yourself in the mirror as you drag a 9-blade piece of marketing across your face for the millionth time. Professional-grade shave products are available for purchase at The Manor Shave Bar & Vitality Lounge.m
What’s with the towel? Wrapping your face in a hot towel is an important step. The towel’s heat opens up your pores and loosens your skin, while the towel’s moisture softens your beard. Think of it as the difference between shaving before you shower or after.
Hot shave lather? Really? Yes, really. Your face cools quickly, and heated lather keeps your skin at the right
Sharing a razor with some other dude..? Nope, every single customer at The Manor gets a fresh, clean, new, straight razor blade. Luxury, bro. That leather sharpening strap thing. It’s actually called a strop. And it works. But since we never re-use our blades, we don’t use strops. They are pretty cool, however.

Cutting Edge Trivia
In 1698, Emperor Peter I of Russia instituted a beard tax. Upon payment of this tax, men were issued a copper or silver “beard token” that served as a receipt.
There are about 30,000 beard hairs on the face of the average man.
Alexander the Great observed that beards could be easily grabbed by the enemy during battle and insisted his troops fight with clean-shaven faces. In general, a man removes over 27 feet of hair in his lifetime through shaving alone.
Hair grows faster during the day than at night.
Ancient Egyptian barbers regularly shaved their clients with razors and pumice stones, as a beard was considered an indication of personal neglect.

Respect the TESTOSTERONE THERAPY Countless decisions in a man’s life are inspired, if not outright fueled, by testosterone. This amazingly powerful hormone affects both the physical and emotional state of being of a man. And much like a man’s ability to run a 6-minute mile or reach the green in two shots, testosterone levels wane as men grow older. So it’s not surprising that consumer demand has helped usher in the age of testosterone replacement therapy. What Father Time takes from us, we try to reclaim. And while modern science and medicine have made this possible, the first step in testosterone therapy is education. It’s important to understand what testosterone is and how it works. Testosterone is considered to be the most important hormone in your body (and we guarantee it’s one of your favorites). It is produced in the testes and adrenal glands, and helps regulate sex drive, muscle strength and mass, and fat distribution (as well as bone density, red blood cell production, and sperm production). Your brain controls testosterone production, and testosterone keeps you looking and feeling…like a guy. You could say it’s the manliest of hormones. Women produce testosterone, too – but at much lower levels. Testosterone belongs to a class of hormones known as androgens, which are sometimes called steroids or anabolic steroids. Yes, those kinds of steroids. The kind that get you suspended from professional sports. Our bodies es-

sentially produce anabolic steroids, but at “normal levels.” Athletes who take steroids to gain a competitive edge are using much higher doses, and are primarily interested in the aforementioned benefits regarding muscle strength and mass, as well as the endurance benefits that come from an optimal supply of red blood cells – something that testosterone regulates. As men grow older, testosterone levels naturally decrease at a rate of about 1% each year, starting at about age 30. So a 45-year-old man, on average, will experience a 15% drop in testosterone. Physical changes such as weight gain or loss of strength that people chalk up to “getting older” may actually be the result of a decrease in testosterone. This is a normal part of aging. But in some cases, men experience not just changes, but actual symptoms, including changes in sexual function and desire, physical changes to the body, changes in sleep patterns, and even emotional changes such as a lack of motivation or self-confidence. Some men also experience hair loss, difficulty concentrating, and increased irritability. If possible symptoms like these are apparent, it’s important to have a physician check your testosterone levels through a simple blood test. This test may reveal that what you’re experiencing is not just a testosterone decrease, but a testosterone deficiency. When abnormally low testosterone levels accompany pronounced symptoms such as the ones
signs you may be experiencing a decrease or deficiency in testosterone • Reduced sex drive • Fatigue • Decreased sexual performance • Increased breast size • Lowered sperm count • Hot flashes • Depression, irritability and inability to focus or concentrate • Shrunken and softened testes • Loss of muscle mass • Hair loss • Bone fractures

testosterone Continued mentioned above, you may be a candidate for testosterone replacement therapy. Once it is determined that hormone replacement therapy is a good option for you, a program is developed that provides the proper dosage and the best delivery system. At The Manor, we recommend beginning with regularly scheduled injections. This allows us to regulate and monitor the amount of testosterone your body is receiving. Once optimal dosage levels are established, you can switch to testosterone pellets. We use Testopel®, a long-acting pellet that provides 3-4 months of testosterone replacement per dose. It’s the only FDA approved testosterone pellet available on the market. The benefits of testosterone therapy vary by individual, but many men report increases in sex drive, enhanced quality of erections, and improvements in both energy and focus. Workouts may become more productive, sleep patterns may normalize, and that “black cloud” that has been following you around tends to disappear. For some men, the benefits feel like a return to normal. For others, it feels like

a return to 2004. Again, results will vary. As with any medical program and procedure, there are certain risks associated with testosterone replacement therapy. If you’ve ever seen a tv commercial for a prescription medicine, you know what we’re talking about. So, in the interest of full disclosure, here are the risks:
An increase in Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, or BPH For some men, the prostate grows larger with age. Increased levels of testosterone can sometimes worsen this condition, which results in difficulty urinating.
Sleep Apnea This condition may worsen as a result of testosterone replacement. While difficult for a man to detect by himself, A sleep study may be needed to diagnose when Sleep Apnea is present.
Blood Clots Testosterone Therapy may result in the rise in the number of red blood cells,
which could lead to blood clots in veins. This in turn could result in deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs). The FDA requires that testosterone replacement products carry a warning about these types of risks. Additionally, there are certain medical conditions that should result in a patient’s disqualification from testosterone replacement therapy, These include Congestive Heart Failure and Prostate Cancer. For some men, testosterone replacement therapy is a total game changer. Symptoms that were once thought of as permanent end up reversing course – or disappearing entirely. For other men, the results are more difficult to notice at all. But under the care and guidance of the medical professionals at The Manor, you just might find that the results you’re looking for are both realistic and attainable. Ask your friendly Manor staff about scheduling your initial testosterone consultation. m

The
Skinny on Diabetes with Dr. Sam
Dr. Sam Fereidouni, MD, MHSA Did you know that 25.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes and 18.8 million new people are diagnosed with the disease every year? Considering those statistics it’s hard to believe that there are still so many misconceptions about the disease. When I first started practicing medicine I met so many patients struggling with managing their diabetes because they simply weren’t getting the right advice. I also found that many patients who were experiencing common symptoms such as hair loss, extreme fatigue, back pain, depression and rapid weight gain didn’t even know that diabetes was the root cause. It was those patients, along with my own family history with diabetes and personal struggles managing my own
blood sugar, that led me to dedicate my career to making sure that patients with diabetes have hope. The reality is that this is a very manageable disease. While it is true that diabetes is serious and there may be complications, most of my diabetes patients live happy, normal lives because we’re able to work together and find solutions to get their disease under control. Like with most undiagnosed chronic illnesses the best advice I can give you is to make sure that you schedule an annual physical for you and everyone in your family. Even if you aren’t experiencing any symptoms a physical can disclose health issues early on, making treatment much easier. However, if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms please make an appointment to see your doctor: • Frequent urination • Unusual thirst
• Extreme hunger • Unusual weight loss or weight gain • Extreme fatigue and irritability • Frequent infections • Blurred vision • Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal • Tingling/numbness in the hands or feet • Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections If you already are living with diabetes and are finding it to be a struggle, don’t wait to get the help you need and deserve. Dr. Sam Fereidouni is the Medical Director at Aveon Health in Scottsdale, Arizona. Located at 7669 E. Pinnacle Peak Dr. #115, Aveon Health is a full service, comprehensive family practice clinic with a team specializing in Diabetes care. Grooming Guide for Men FRESH BREATH EDITION Do you know what they call a guy with a $1,000 suit and bad breath? “That guy with bad breath.” Don’t be that guy with bad breath. Here’s 5 cheap & easy things you can do to make sure people notice the suit, not the breath: 1) Brush (duh). Twice a day, for sure. But keep a toothbrush & toothpaste in your desk and hit that mouth again after lunch. Total game-changer. 2) Floss (and not just the day of your dentist appointment) Tiny bits of food get stuck between your teeth and begin to rot. Unless you want your mouth to smell like yesterday’s shrimp scampi, floss every time you brush. It’s 60 seconds well-spent. 3) Scrape The very back of your tongue is the hangout for those awful bacteria responsible for halitosis (bad breath). Use a tongue scraper or your toothbrush and scrape the very back of your tongue for significant

improvement. Yes, you might gag a little. But you’ll get no sympathy from the ladies so just grin and bear it. 4) Hydrate Bad breath is often a symptom of dehydration. So before you have that morning cuppa’ Joe, slam a glass of cold water. Your body needs it and your mouth will appreciate it. And speaking of coffee… 5) After-coffee You might love that delicious French Roast you sip on your way to work, but your coworkers don’t. There’s a reason they call it “coffee breath.” That’s a nickname you really don’t want. We’re not asking you to surrender your caffeine. Just make sure you don’t carry around a Starbucks souvenir all day long. When java time is over, grab some mints or mouthwash – or better yet, refer to step #1. And remember… There’s probably someone special who will be very, very happy you took this advice… Keep it fresh, guys. m

Rejuvenate
Therapy
with Back in the 1970’s, while Americans were staying alive and shaking their respective booties beneath a mirrored disco ball, a doctor in Baltimore, Maryland was pioneering a unique approach to treating patients. His name was John Myers and his treatment included neither traditional Western medicine nor Eastern herbal treatments. Dr. Myers created a proprietary blend of vitamins & minerals that were delivered to patients intravenously as treatment for a variety of ailments. This concoction is what we refer to today as Myers’ Cocktail. It’s the foundation of the fastgrowing world of IV Therapy. As alternative health treatments go, IV Therapy has sound logic behind it. For starters, the vital nutrients are delivered without delay, straight to your system. Oral supplements, on the other hand, are subject to your body’s digestive schedule. They can also lose potency during the digestive process. Also, the nutrients in an IV treatment are part of a liquid solution, which gives you a hydration benefit along with your supplements. The current popularity of IV therapy can be partially attributed to its use by celebrities including Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Simon Cowell, and pop star Rihanna (who famously tweeted a selfie showing an IV in her arm). Celebrities represent exaggerated versions of our own lives – overscheduled, overpartied, tons of demands, and lots of irons in the proverbial fire. So we look to our pop culture heroes for clues about how to manage our crazy, busy lives. After all, stars like these have access to anything money can buy. So when they opt for something like IV therapy, the general public sits up and takes notice. Plus, the simple fact that we really are busy, plugged-in creatures, constantly on the go, means there’s a strong demand for a fast, effective path to enhancing overall wellness. We used to seek the
8
Winter 2014/2015
magic pill. These days, however, the magic pill is just too slow, so we need something faster. Never before has there been a more perfect climate for IV Therapy. Part of the appeal of IV Therapy is that patients get to participate in their health & wellness decisions. We love our choices and embrace our uniqueness. IV Therapy lets people add an element of customization to their health regimens. Patients feel empowered by the fact that they’re choosing a path to wellness, rather than simply hoping for wellness to arrive. In early 2014, some very encouraging news came out of the University of Kansas Medical Center. Researchers there discovered that high doses of Vitamin C, when delivered intravenously with chemotherapy, helped kill cancer cells while lessening the toxic effects of chemotherapy in some patients. These types of breakthroughs support the theories championed by Dr. Myers back in the 70s, and may spark additional research on the medicinal effects of IV vitamin treatments. The contents of a given IV treatment can vary based upon the needs of the patient (and the direction of the physician). Today’s IV blends are designed for specific benefits. It might be the competitive runner looking to maximize performance, the business traveler recovering from jet lag, or even the party animal who wants to feel human again. In the same way that different oral vitamins are available for individual health goals, IV treatments are anything but “one size fits all.” And if general health and wellness is your goal, you might go with the tried & true approach found in the Myers’ Cocktail. The late Dr. Myers knew he was onto something 40 years ago. Chances are, he’d be smiling today if he followed Rihanna on Twitter. Check out the full menu of intravenous and intramuscular therapies available at The Manor. m
