Letter from the EDITOR “Your ‘why’ should make you cry”
Discover the Phoenix Region Magazine has been a labor of love. Publishing and launching the first issue for this region is exciting. Getting to know the people, places and culture of this region and putting it in one place to be shared gives me great pride. There are several reasons why I am honored and delighted to introduce Discover the Phoenix Region Magazine. When I relocated from Ohio in 2005 and began to call Arizona home, I recognized the need for a tool that would help people tell their story—be it established residents, new residents, or businesses. We bring to this new publication the success and expertise of Discover the Dayton Region Magazine, a publication that has over a twenty-year history and is the “go-to” resource for Business to Business. Similarly, the Discover the Phoenix Region Magazine will have a plethora of resources for you, including maps, events, business listings and great stories of Phoenix. I’m sure you will come to cherish this magazine the same way Dayton residents cherish theirs. I have to admit that this was probably the hardest economy in which to launch a new magazine, but it was also the most perfect timing. The Phoenix region is alive and growing stronger every day. With the heart of the economy starting to come to life again, Discover the Phoenix Region Magazine is in the forefront of promoting all of the riches from our region. And like many Phoenix residents, what I see when I look around are warm faces, kind hearts and a good, hard-working economy that will prosper through and come out ahead. Discover the Phoenix Region Magazine would not be possible if it was not for the hard work of our Partner magazine and President Eve Georgiou and Vice President, Steven Feaster. This year they have also expanded a new magazine for the Northeast Ohio region. To the Phoenix crew, my partner Rick Rome, all of our contributing writers, designers, and photographers, so many thanks to you. I started this letter with a saying I love—“Your ‘why’ should make you cry”. These have always been wonderful words that tied back to my beautiful family. Now, these words tie back to my new “family” as well—the Phoenix region and its residents. Thank you, Phoenix, for welcoming our magazine! The people, places, and attractions I have found along the way have given me a new “why” and I know you will enjoy this magazine as much as I do.

SUN
Phoenix is blessed with more sunshine than any other place in America, including the Sunshine State of Florida. The sun feels great on your body, keeps you warm, and goes a long way to brighten your disposition, but as the stor y of the Greek mythological figure Icarus warns us - we must respect the sun. While the beautiful Phoenix weather beckons us to spend more time outside, the deser t sun is relentlessly at work on our skin. The ef fects of prolonged sun exposure can occur quicker than most people realize because of the intensity of the Arizona sunshine. Prolonged exposure of the skin to the sun will cause sunburn, dr y, damaged skin and can lead to skin cancer. The first step to protecting yourself is with the use of proper clothing, hats and sunscreen. Select light weight clothing made of ultraviolet protective fabrics, shir ts with long sleeves, stand up collars, and long pants that allow you to be outside and not get burned.
34
As I have gotten older and wiser, more of my beautiful scalp shines through my graying mane and Iʼve found a hat is the best friend a guy can have. Reduce the risk of skin cancer and the temperature of your head by 20 degrees with a wide brimmed sun-hat. Hats with a solid top and vents or mesh on the sides can be a great functional piece of clothing the helps keep you cool (por table shade) and avoid fr ying your ears, nose and head. Liberal and frequent application of sunscreen, sun block and sun tan lotions is another UV protection strategy. Products rated for SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicate how much longer skin exposed to the sun with sunscreen will be protected from skin that is unprotected. Studies recommend an initial application 15-30 minutes prior to sun exposure, with reapplication ever y 2 hours and af ter getting in the water or perspiring. Avoid the two most common mistakes - not putting enough sunscreen on to get the full SPF protection or using an outdated product. The average adult wearing a swimming suit needs 1 ounce (one shot glass full) to cover an exposed area of the skin ef fectively. Donʼt forget your eyes also need protection from the sun, wind and blowing dust with UV protection of 95%-99%. In addition to reducing glare and a case of the “squints,” sunglasses protect the clear cover ings of the eye, the cornea and conjunctiva.
HEAT
As the saying goes - it is a dr y heat but then so is an oven. With triple digit temperatures for days and weeks on end, pool par ties with blocks of ice cooling the pool, and car steering wheels too hot to touch, I have developed a great appreciation of shade. The relief from the intense deser t sun provided by a tree, an awning or even a street sign can make it feel almost 20 degrees cooler, unlike the Midwest and East Coast where the humidity does not fully help one appreciate the use of shade. Take advantage of the mornings and limit your exposure to the sun between 10am and 4pm. My dogs and I enjoy a walk each day so we go early, just at or before sunrise. This time of day is relatively cool and the sunʼs radiant heat has dissipated enough to allow the dogs to walk comfortably and without the possibility of a burn to their paws from the hot cement. The heat of the sun also provides some challenges in the car. A parked car in the sun quickly heats up and cools slowly. Prudent use of window tinting, windshield covers, even the choice of a parking spot can make a big dif ference. Never leave children, pets or anyone in a parked car in the sun as temperatures rise 20 degrees or more in a ver y shor t period of time. Let the car cool and air circulate before getting into a hot car. Avoid strenuous activity for prolonged periods in the heat and take frequent rest and water breaks. Be aware that alcohol, stimulants and cer tain medications make people more susceptible to heat related illness. Watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion such as headache, dizziness, profuse sweating (that may be accompanied by goose bumps), and extreme fatigue. If you or others star t to have these signs get to a cooler spot, preferably with a breeze, and drink fluids such as a spor ts drink. If symptoms persist longer than 30 minutes or become more severe, seek medical attention.
WATER FUN IN THE DESERT Pools are ubiquitous in Phoenix homes, hotels, resor ts and water parks. Families can enjoy time together splashing, jumping and playing games in the water. Our swim season is practically year round, but the most active season is May through September. Warm summer sun and cool water naturally go together.
Water exercise is a great way to move joints and muscles with reduced weight-bearing on the spine, hips and knees. Moving arms, legs and body through the water provides buoyancy and constant light resistance, helping to work all your muscles through a full range of motion. Water walking is an alternative aerobic activity that can accommodate ar thritic knees while staying cool and getting some sun. Phoenix has many group classes and indoor/outdoor pools for these activities. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under five in Arizona. During the warm months of May through September the leading cause of pool related incidents is inadequate super vision. Never let children near water unsuper vised. Whether at a public or private pool, lake, beach or water-park , keep a close eye on children and use the buddy system. Assign an adult to each young child in the group. This is impor tant not only while they are swimming, but also when they are around the water. Do not rely on flotation devices, inflatable toys, “swimmies” or even swimming lessons to substitute for adult supervision and never leave the child alone for even “two seconds” to guard against a terrible accident. When boating, use Coast Guard-approved life vests, have one for each person in the boat and wear it. Do not operate a water craf t or swim under the influence of drugs or alcohol and always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to back. Watch the weather and the time of day to avoid bad weather or getting lost in the darkness. Yes, there are many pleasures to living in the “ Valley of the Sun” and no snow to shovel. Af ter five years in Arizona, I have grown to enjoy and respect the deser t environment. This past winter as I watched the news and heard stories from friends and family in the Midwest about the winter storms, I knew I had made the right choice. I will trade 3-4 months of 100 degrees and bright sunshine for six months of cold and snow. With a little preparation and planning, you and your family will enjoy the sun without the burn, the heat without wilting, and the water without incident. Discover Phoenix by practicing a safe and healthy lifestyle!

Weight Training
Weight training tends to work the superficial
muscles (larger outer muscles), so I would not advise heavy weights while working on a posture program. However, there are many new ways of training and there are personal trainers out there utilizing Pilates-based exercises and other great movements on things like foam rolls and balance balls, etc. Just stay away from the heavy weights until your posture is in place.
Yoga
Yoga is great if you have no injury and have
tight muscles. If you’re starting out with back pain or shoulder pain then it will be very important that you work with an instructor who understands your body, since some yoga postures can overstretch the body causing injury.
Yoga stretches the tendons and liga-
ments; therefore if you’re hypermobile, double-jointed or extremely flexible, then I would avoid yoga classes and seek private instruction as chances are your body needs more stability and strength at the joint. What’s important in this phase is getting integrity and balance in your body, and that will require both strengthening and stretching.

Facelt!
let’s
every face can look better with proper skin care
you can present your best face to the world with the right regimen
Masque:
Cleanse:
by Kristy Leopard
www.kristyleopard.com
Choose one for your skin type that you like with an appealing scent and feel. One that will lift the impurities from your skin.
Exfoliate:
This is to exfoliate, or “sweep” the skin. For women, by removing the dead skin cells prior to applying foundation, the foundation will adhere to your skin better, providing a smoother look, and longer lasting coverage throughout the day. The exfoliator that I generally recommend contains papaya enzymes that exfoliate and soften parched dry skin.
A good masque will open the pores and pull impurities to the top of the skin therefore the pores clean with a tighter smaller appearance.
Tone:
The right toner will help remove any leftover impurities you may have missed but its primary function is to act as a primer so that your skin receives the greatest benefit from your moisturizer.
Moisturize:
Choose one that works for your skin type. Most women tend to have drier skin, while men tend to be on the more normal side due to shaving which has an exfoliating effect. Women should use something very hydrating but not necessarily oily. Most women benefit from a moisturizer containing ingredients such as jojoba, vitamin C, & vitamin E. Men should use a non-oily moisturizer with similar ingredients but not necessarily as heavy. So when do you use all of this? Every day you should cleanse, tone & moisturize, only twice a week should you exfoliate and masque, and never on the same day. Exfoliants and masques are intensive treatments for the skin & over usage could exacerbate a dry/oily skin problem (think of it like dusting and vacuuming). Now, a word on men’s skin care. Most men shave daily which helps exfoliate their skin, but using an exfoliator prior to shaving every other day can help prevent and release any ingrown hairs. By S. Ben Comer Photos by Barrett-Jackson Shiny chrome and auto body paint so exquisitely deep you can bury your hand in it. Memories of first cars and fast cars, thoughts of driving fast somewhere you wouldn’t get caught.
Barrett-Jackson is the premier auto auction in the world and continues to live up to that moniker every year. From classic and one-of-a-kind vehicles to exotics and muscle cars, Barrett-Jackson attracts only the best. The 39th Annual was a glorious spectacle of cars, people and money. Money for the ticket to get in, money for the great cars, and lots of money going to charity. A special charity auction of the Ford Mustang FR500S Challenge Race car donated by SPX culminated in a winning bid of $275,000, the highest auction bid for any car that day and the 8th highest sale price at the event overall. All proceeds from the sale of the car went too St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Barrett-Jackson keeps growing by keeping ahead of the trends, listening to their customers and planning for success. The event is all about the cars and offers collectors, investors, and enthusiasts the thrills and excitement of the automobile. “Even with the worst weather the Phoenix area has seen in decades, buyers, sellers and visitors from across the country enjoyed another incredible Scottsdale event,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “With an 11 percent increase in sales, we showed that buyers have confidence in the market and are choosing Barrett-Jackson as the source to add to their collections. What a great way to sou start the 2010 auction season.”
48
Just to put things into perspective for the uninitiated: the 1968 Ford Mustang 428 CJ Fastback on the blocks at the 2006 Barrett-Jackson fetched a whopping $522,500. It was billed as the “fastest car in the history of man” and treated to a “meticulous two-year professional, rotisserie documented restoration.” This is just one example in the exciting world of car collecting. While offering plenty of cars at the high end, BarrettJackson wisely listened to customers who asked for mid-range cars. Collectors really responded to the cars in the $50,000 to $150,000 price range. At the 2010 Scottsdale event, Barrett-Jackson recorded more than $68 million in total sales. Despite significant rain and damaging winds, no vehicles were damaged and all cars scheduled made it to the block. There was a slight reduction in gate attendance, but with the television audience and worldwide appeal, the auction posted an increase in sales. “Barrett-Jackson remains the heartbeat and bellwether of car collecting,” noted Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson. “From events like our downtown city of Scottsdale Road Rally and Ford Family Value Day benefiting Cox Charities to on-site ride and drives and various exhibitors, people come here to celebrate the automotive culture and the passion of the hobby. But most of all, they love Barrett-Jackson because it’s all about the cars. And with nearly 1,200 vehicles all selling at No Reserve, this year’s docket was our best ever.”
The top six cars sold last year in Scottsdale included: 1929 HAMILTON METALPLANE H47 SERIAL #65 AIRPLANE - $671,000 (Lot #1307) 1964 SHELBY COBRA ROADSTER - $478,500 (Lot #1317) 1963 SHELBY COBRA ROADSTER - $401,500 (Lot #1303) 1935 CADILLAC SERIES 40 FLEETWOOD IMPERIAL CONVERTIBLE - $302,500 (Lot #1265) 2011 FORD MUSTANG GT GLASS ROOF COUPE - $300,000 (Lot #1295.1) 1970 PLYMOUTH HEMI SUPERBIRD 2 DOOR HARDTOP - $286,000 (Lot #1289)

ajor League Baseball came to the Phoenix region in 1998, when the City of Phoenix made a commitment to construct a "domed stadium." One of the major factors that prevented baseball from coming to Phoenix is that baseball is a summer sport and the summer heat would be a problem. But the very rst retractable roof baseball stadium would allow for a natural grass eld (the roof is open during the day to grow the grass and then closed at night to ll the stadium with air conditioned air for the comfort of players and fans) there is even a signature swimming pool just over the right center eld wall. The stadium today is known as Chase Field.
