Leggere un libro. Visitare una mostra. Ascoltare un concerto. Raramente si pensa che si tratta di autentici “privilegi”: oggi condivisi da molti, ma ancora (anche se può apparire strano) preclusi ai più.

La cultura, per progredire, richiede continue “chiavi di accesso”. Dalle più elementari (come il saper leggere) ad altre più sofisticate, che la cultura stessa, quasi per “geminazione”, crea di continuo.

Chiavi che ci consentono di scrutare orizzonti sempre più affascinanti e impegnativi (percepire l’enigma di una statua greca, di un quadro astratto o di un brano musicale, al di là della mera contemplazione).

Chiavi che durano per sempre. Che affinano gusto e capacità di giudizio. Che non possiamo smarrire e che nessuno ci potrà mai rubare. Che potremo condividere e scambiare con altri.

La cultura, innegabile segno di benessere sociale. Ma anche matrice di autentica felicità individuale.

Ci sono infiniti buoni motivi per incoraggiare e sostenere la cultura in tutte le sue migliori espressioni. La Fondazione lo crede da sempre.

Rivolto ai cittadini residenti e a quelli… temporanei: provate un po’ ad orecchiare i discorsi della gente passeggiando per le vie di Trieste. Vi accorgerete che una buona metà di chi incrocerete non parla in italiano: mentre l’altra metà si dividerà tra la lingua di Dante e il dialetto di casa. No, non è solo la bella e pacifica invasione di turisti (molti dei quali stranieri) a causare tutto ciò. È piuttosto la natura e la storia di una città emporio cresciuta nei secoli come porto di mare nel vero senso del suo significato. Crocevia di traffici, merci e scambi, ma soprattutto culture. Trieste non ha una sua lingua, al singolare: ne ha tante e diverse, ognuna con una sua storia alle spalle. IES in questo suo diciannovesimo capitolo cercherà di raccontarvele o quanto meno spiegarvi perché il plurilinguismo di questa città è la chiave per capirla e conoscerla meglio. Attraverso la sua storia, a volte dolorosa, ma sempre ricca di fascino, nelle contraddizioni e nelle diversità che mai come nei giorni che stiamo vivendo tornano di straordinaria attualità.

Le lingue e le tante parole di Trieste, che ritroviamo nel lavoro di scrittori e poeti, di attori e comunicatori, di commercianti e navigatori, rappresentano l’anima e lo spirito della città più internazionale e al tempo stesso “italiana” della nostra penisola. Ecco allora nuovi percorsi e itinerari per andare alla scoperta di una diversa e originale forma di lettura di Trieste che in passato ha letteralmente rapito scrittori e artisti e che oggi non smette di catturare visitatori e turisti, attratti dalla forza comunicativa dei tanti idiomi che per secoli hanno convissuto muovendosi in pace per le strade e le piazze che si affacciano su un mare che deve unire e non può dividere.

E non è forse un caso se a un “grande comunicatore” Trieste ha voluto dedicare la mostra-evento ospitata in quella sorta di “cattedrale” che è il Salone degli Incanti. Vi sono esposte le opere di Banksy, misterioso artista che ha sostituito alle parole il tratto marcato di figure che parlano di pace, convivenza, amore, rispetto e tolleranza. Nel suo linguaggio universale, che non conosce diversità di lingue, etnie e religioni. E Trieste pare proprio la città perfetta per ospitare e presentare ai suoi ospiti tutto ciò.

Whether you have lived here all your life or are here for a weekend trip… you may overhear fragments of conversations while you stroll through the streets of Trieste. And you may be surprised to notice that, at least half of the times, those conversations are not in Italian –while the other half usually involves a great deal of local dialect. True, Trieste welcomes foreign tourists all year round – yet, what you are hearing is part of a heritage that dates back to the city’s past as free port (in every possible sense) and crossroad of trades, journeys, and, most of all, cultures. Trieste has not one, but many languages, each one with its own history and beauty.

The 19th chapter of IES revolves entirely around the languages of Trieste, to tell their tales, or at least explain why multilingualism is the key to understand this city. Trieste’s troubled, yet fascinating history is filled with contradictions and diversity, that are just as relevant today.

Trieste’s languages, words, and expressions pervade the work of writers, poets, actors, and speakers, as well as traders and sailors – uttering them is to speak the very soul and spirit of this city, whose vocation is as profoundly Italian as it is international.

This issue of IES presents an innovative series of itineraries to experience a peculiar side of Trieste that was able to captivate writers and artists throughout history – and whose charm has not diminished over time, as it continues to entice visitors with the power of its unique and multifaceted language: a melting pot of idioms peacefully coexisting on the city’s streets and squares overlooking the unifying expanse of the sea.

It is hardly a coincidence that Trieste has chosen a “great communicator” of our times as the crowning jewel of the exhibition on display till next Easter at Salone degli Incanti: the masterpieces of mysterious British artist Banksy need no words to convey their powerful message of peace, coexistence, love, respect, and tolerance. His universal language knows no ethnic, cultural, or religious barrier. And Trieste may be the most fitting location to host his message.

Queste sono le lingue nelle quali è stata tradotta la frase “Maria Theresia (1717-1780) sovrana d’Austria, promotrice della Trieste moderna e cosmopolita. In ricordo” che campeggia in una piccola iscrizione del 1992 sul palazzo all’angolo tra Via Rossini e Via Filzi, in quell’epicentro plurilinguistico che è il Canal grande. Non bastassero infatti le lingue ufficiali appena citate ci verrebbero in soccorso i nomi dei palazzi, che recuperano i cognomi dei primi proprietari. Da Carciotti (greco) ai Gopcevich (serbi), passando per i veneti Biasoletto, gli austriaci Hierschel, ma pure gli svizzeri francesi Genel. E se ancora non fosse sufficiente sul Ponterosso c’è la statua di James Joyce, che in questo crogiolo di razze e lingue trovò la sua dimensione umana e artistica più confacente, andando a scrivere in una lettera alla moglie Nora “La mia anima è a Trieste” (1909). The small 1992 inscription in the city’s multi-cultural hub of Canal Grande, right at the junction between Via Rossini and Via Filzi, displays a version in each one of these languages of the following sentence: “Maria Theresia (1717-1780) sovereign of Austria, patroness of modern and cosmopolitan city of Trieste. In memoriam”. And if this is not enough, witness the names of the families the surrounding buildings used to belong to: Carciotti (Greece), Gopcevich (Serbia), Biasoletto (Venice), Hierschel (Austria), Genel (French Switzerland),… Overseeing the seal of the deal from Ponterosso there is James Joyce’s commemorative statue – in the cultural and linguistic melting pot of Trieste he found a home and a most befitting artistic and living dimension, that he celebrated in his letter to wife Nora “My soul is in Trieste” (1909). Joyce travelled all the way to the Adriatic shores to offer his services as English teacher. Although English was one of the least spoken languages in Trieste, it was rapidly gaining momentum.

oyce non scelse di arrivare a Trieste, ci capitò per caso, in quella fuga dall’Irlanda che a inizi Novecento sembrava essere l’unica ancora di salvezza per una generazione che voleva lasciarsi alle spalle i postumi della Grande carestia e un cattolicesimo troppo invadente. Joyce raggiungerà le sponde dell’Adriatico per insegnare inglese, una delle lingue meno diffuse in città, ma altrettanto utili nell’emporio triestino. Il “professor Zois” ebbe tra i suoi allievi il fior fiore della borghesia e soprattutto Italo Svevo, destinato a seguire gli interessi della ditta di vernici della moglie, la celebre Veneziani, a Londra. In questo melting pot Joyce, che si era laureato in francese e italiano, riuscirà a creare un proprio linguaggio a dir poco pirotecnico, dove gli echi e le allusioni ad altre lingue si rivelano degli arcani che possono essere svelati solo dall’autore. A Trieste Joyce comincerà a scrivere “qualcosa” come disse al fratello Stanislaus (lo ricorda un’iscrizione sullo stabile di Via Bramante 4) e questo “qualcosa” sarà l’inizio di un capolavoro assoluto della letteratura moderna: Ulisse; romanzo nato a Trieste, ampliato a Zurigo e pubblicato a Parigi nel 1922.

Un po’ prima di Joyce anche Sir Richard Francis Burton, diplomatico poliglotta di Sua Maestà britannica, sostò a Trieste (1872-1890) dove si dedicò –vivendo nella dominante villa Economo di Largo Promontorio– alla traduzione de Le Mille e una notte, oltre che del Kama Sutra e dello scandaloso manuale di erotologia araba Il Giardino Profumato, che la devota e cattolica moglie Isabel Arundell distrusse immediatamente dopo la morte del marito. Joyce did not intend to visit Trieste: he ended up here by accident, wandering in his voluntary exile, like so many of his fellow countrymen, who left Ireland at the beginning of the 20th century in an ultimate attempt to escape the Great Famine and the increasingly intrusive conduct of Catholicism. Joyce travelled all the way to the Adriatic shores to offer his services as English teacher – and although English was one of the least spoken languages in Trieste, it was rapidly gaining momentum in the city’s flourishing commercial hub. “Il professor Zois” taught to the cream of the upper middle class of Trieste –including young Italo Svevo, who was meant to take care of the interests of the Veneziani’s varnish business in London on behalf of his wife’s family. A graduate of French and Italian, Joyce was deeply influenced by the city’s melting pot, which inspired him to mould his very own language: a pyrotechnical fusion of echoes from and references to other languages, whose profound mystery could only be unravelled by the author himself. While in Trieste, Joyce wrote to his brother Stanislaus saying “I have written something“ (as celebrated on the memorial plate at no.4 Via Bramante), which eventually turned out to be the first “episode“ of his new novel and absolute masterpiece of modern literature Ulysses – born in Trieste, finalised in Zurich, and published in Paris in 1922.

Durò solo tre mesi il soggiorno a Trieste di Henry Beyle, noto ai più come Stendhal. Il letterato francese rimase in città nell’inverno del 1830-31 come diplomatico. Fu per lui un periodo nero. Seguito dalla polizia austriaca, braccato dall’odiata bora, trascurato dalle donne, Stendhal odiò tanto il cibo “selvaggio degli Unni”, quanto il carattere chiuso dei triestini, ma lodò le strade lastricate come le più belle d’Europa e descrisse Trieste come una città che prelude a quelle americane del XX secolo senza per questo tagliare i ponti con il passato. Lasciò così velocemente il porto per Civitavecchia che al suo alloggio presso l’hotel All’Aquila Nera (Corso Italia, 6) rimasero solo i calzoni peraltro non proprio puliti dopo una notte di mal di pancia. As soon as his transfer order to Civitavecchia arrived, he left his room at Aquila Nera Hotel (no.6 Corso Italia) in such a hurry that he forgot his night trousers – not exactly clean, after a night spent with an upset stomach. La comunità ebraica fu sempre più attenta alla cultura scientifica che alla produzione letteraria, ma monumenti come Italo Svevo (al secolo Aron Hector Schmitz) e Umberto Saba (pseudonimo di Umberto Poli) ne fecero parte, sebbene optarono in età adulta per la conversione al cattolicesimo. Sono loro le punte di diamante che per la creazione delle proprie opere si avvalsero dell’italiano.

Saba in “Avevo” –poesia citata anche nella targa posta ai piedi della sua statua in Via Dante– lo esplicita in maniera chiara: “Avevo una città bella tra i monti rocciosi e il mare luminoso; Mia perché vi nacqui, più che d’altri mia che la scopriva fanciullo, ed adulto per sempre a Italia la sposai col canto”. E come dimenticare Ida Finzi, che grazie al nome di Heydée fu una delle cronachiste più interessanti di inizio Novecento.

Saba e la Finzi riuscirono a sopravvivere al dramma delle leggi razziali e in particolare al buio periodo dell’occupazione nazista della città, quando larga parte della comunità trovò la morte nel campo di concentramento della Risiera di San Sabba. [FP]

During the Nazi Germany occupation, the majority of Trieste’s Jewish citizens were imprisoned and killed at Risiera di San Sabba.

The Jewish community of Trieste has always been devoted to science rather than literature – and yet, it was this community that raised men of artistic genius like Italo Svevo (born Aron Hector Schmitz) and Umberto Saba (born Umberto Poli), before they converted to Catholicism later in life. They are the diamond tip of a community of writers that chose the Italian language for their writings. In his poem “Avevo” [I had], which is immortalized on the commemorative plate at the foot of his statue in Via Dante, Saba explicitly addresses his manifesto: ”I had a lovely city, set between the jagged mountains and the gleaming sea: my own, that I was born there, and still more my own that I discovered her as a boy, then as a man forever made my own−I married her to Italy in song” (translation from Umberto Saba: thirty-one poems, 1978, 43-4). Worth mentioning is also Ida Finzi, who became one of the most interesting chroniclers of the early 20th century, writing under the pseudonym Heydée. Both Saba and Finzi were able to survive Italian Racial Laws and the subsequent nightmare of Nazi Germany occupation, during which the majority of Trieste’s Jewish citizens were imprisoned and killed at Risiera di San Sabba, the only concentration camp with a crematorium on Italian soil. E oggi il sentiero intitolato al poeta boemo regala gli scorci più emozionanti sul Golfo di Trieste e sul Castello di Miramare, da dove l’arciduca Massimiliano d’Asburgo a metà Ottocento scrutava l’orizzonte per ideare campagne scientifiche utili a raccogliere specie botaniche esotiche per ampliare il suo amato parco. The brisk air of this northernmost port on the Adriatic Sea inspired Austrian poet and novelist Rainer Maria Rilke: during his stay (1911-1912) at the Castle of Duino as a guest of Princess Marie von Thurn und Taxis, Rilke wrote his famous Duino Elegies. The Castle had always been home to the arts, hosting various brilliant minds throughout the decades, including Hugo von Hoffmansthal, Paul Valery, Mark Twain, and Gabriele D’Annunzio. Today, the trail named after Rilke is probably the most scenic itinerary overlooking the Gulf of Trieste and the Castle of Miramare, where Austrian Archduke Maximilian I of Mexico used to gaze into the horizon while planning his next scientific campaign that would provide new exotic species to add to his beloved botanic garden. Tra i tanti aneddoti che la storia greca ha regalato alla città di Trieste spicca, per gli amanti del futbol, la storia del soprannome dato ai giocatori della Unione Sportiva Triestina Calcio, vale a dire “i greghi”. Parola oggi in via di estinzione, l’ellenismo in salsa alabardata rimane ben ancorato grazie ad uno dei tanti club di tifosi che affollano lo stadio alla domenica e che ricordano, a distanza di più di un secolo, come in quei primi consigli d’amministrazione sedesse più di qualche facoltoso greco. Se il calcio rappresenta un linguaggio di facile ed universale comprensione, altrettanto lo sono gli affari. E tra i mercanti che giungono in riva all’Adriatico vi è anche quel Demetrio Carciotti che per primo capì la necessità di traduzioni ed interpretazioni a bordo delle imbarcazioni dirette a Trieste. Il suo palazzo, oggi in vendita, fa bella mostra di sé a due passi da molo Audace e dalle rive, proprio dove un tempo attraccavano i preziosi carichi delle navi. La lingua franca che qui si sviluppa dopo la proclamazione del porto franco prende in prestito termini da ogni idioma. E i greci, dopo l’insediamento come comunità, erigeranno la propria chiesa a causa di un problema linguistico. Inizialmente, infatti, la comunità ellenica condivideva il tempio con i serbi. La lingua utilizzata durante le funzioni divenne una questione insormontabile, cosicché i greci scelsero di abbandonare San Spiridione e di abbracciare San Nicolò. Divisioni superate da tempo, la cui testimonianza è visibile quotidianamente. Passeggiando tra via San Nicolò, le rive e via Cassa di Risparmio si può assistere all’incontro tra l’archimandrita greco e lo stavroforo serbo, i due massimi esponenti delle rispettive comunità religiose. Fanno colazione assieme, a volte prendono un aperitivo. Chiacchierando. [NG]

There are various anecdotes connected to the presence of Greek nationals in Trieste, first and foremost the story behind the nickname “ i greghi ” [the Greeks] given to the football players of the Unione Sportiva Triestina Calcio. Although not many remember it today, die-hard members of the team’s fan club will tell you all about the early board meetings of the city’s football club, when more than one rich Greek businessman used to sit at the shareholders’ table. Just like football, business speaks a universal language – which is why the free port of Trieste and its numerous trade opportunities attracted so many people from every shore of the Mediterranean, including Greece. One of them, Demetrio Carciotti, had the brilliant intuition of providing translation and interpretation services on board of the ships headed to Trieste. His residence overlooks Molo Audace and the Rive, right where commercial vessels used to dock to unload their precious cargos. The lingua franca of the free port of Trieste is a mosaic of all these languages. Greek was mainly spoken around the Church of San Nicolò, which was built by the Greek Orthodox community after leaving the now Serbian Orthodox Church of San Spiridione. The rift that led to the separation of the two Orthodox communities, however, has long been overcome: walking along Via San Nicolò, between the Rive and Via Cassa di Risparmio, you may catch a glimpse of the current Greek archimandrite and his Serbian counterpart, the Stavrophore, sitting together. Una delle banali semplificazioni in cui la narrazione di questo territorio incappa di frequente è l’equazione che vorrebbe Trieste italiana e il Carso sloveno. La comunità slovena –che troppo spesso viene definita minoranza, come se fosse suddita di una maggioranza che detiene il potere– ha le sue radici non solo sull’altopiano, bensì anche nei rioni periferici della città. È in quartieri come Skedenj (Servola) o Sveti Ivan (San Giovanni), come pure nei paesi di Lonjer (Longera) e Barkovlje (Barcola) che si può sentire il dialetto sloveno di Trieste.

Nella miglior tradizione particolarista, la parlata è legata agli insegnamenti di France Prešeren (il padre della lingua slovena), con l’aggiunta di parole e affermazioni italiane, o meglio dialettali. Gli sloveni di Trieste, al contrario dei triestini italiani, sono tutti bilingui e saltano, senza sforzo, da una lingua all’altra.

La storia della comunità slovena di Trieste non si può raccontare senza menzionare le vessazioni e le violenze subite durante il ventennio fascista.

L’utilizzo della lingua slovena in pubblico venne vietato, le camicie nere appiccarono il fuoco al Narodni dom, i parroci sloveni vennero obbligati a dir messa in italiano e non più nella loro lingua.

L’elemento identitario sloveno è molto radicato negli ambienti ecclesiastici: dal 1800 fino alla fine della prima guerra mondiale, la diocesi di Trieste venne retta ininterrottamente da vescovi sloveni. Nella chiesa di San Giovanni decollato, nell’omonimo rione, ancora oggi la messa viene officiata anche in sloveno. Non potendosi parlare in pubblico, lo

sloveno assunse una dimensione ancora più intima: la clandestinità lo fece diventare la prima forma di resistenza al nazifascismo.

Nel 1903 a San Giovanni nasce Vladimir Bartol. Scrittore praticamente sconosciuto in Italia, il suo capolavoro Alamut è stato tradotto in diciotto lingue. A Santa Croce nacque Viktor Sulčič, l’architetto che, dopo essersi rifugiato in Argentina durante le persecuzioni fasciste, nel 1940 realizzò la cosiddetta Bombonera, lo stadio del Boca Juniors a Buenos Aires. Lo scrittore Boris Pahor, morto all’età di 109 anni, era sloveno. La giornalista della Rai che trasmette da Berlino è Barbara Gruden e proviene dalla comunità slovena di Trieste, come d’altronde fu Sergio Canciani, storico corrispondente del servizio pubblico da Mosca.

Il dialetto parlato dai triestini è pieno di termini presi in prestito dal ceppo slavo: clanz (via stretta, sentiero), zima (inverno, ma inteso più come freddo particolarmente pungente) e brivez (barbiere), ma anche le imprecazioni come cudić (diavolo) i classici osmiza (che non ha bisogno di traduzioni) e patok (fiumiciattolo, torrente), fino al cisto (senza soldi) e al trdo . Purtroppo, alcune parole sono divenute oggetto di scherno nei confronti della comunità slovena. “ Parlar per za-kaj” (perché) assume un significato dispregiativo, come a sottolineare l’incapacità espressiva dell’interlocutore. Per fortuna alcune contrapposizioni sono sempre meno frequenti. [NG]

One of the oversimplifying narratives plaguing this territory is the attribution of Trieste and the Karst to Italy and Slovenia, respectively. The Slovenian community of Trieste –too often referred to as a minority, as if subjected to a power-holding majority– has a history that embraces both the Karst Plateau and the peripheral Rioni of the city: the city districts of Skedenj (Servola) and Sveti Ivan (San Giovanni), as well as the town Lonjer (Longera) and Barkovlje (Barcola), speak the Slovenian dialect of Trieste. In line with the local tradition of particularism, this language follows the teachings of France Prešeren (father of modern Slovenian) with the addition of words and idioms taken from Italian – more specifically, Triestino dialect. Unlike Italian-speaking citizens, Slovenians living in Trieste are perfectly bilingual, and can switch between languages quite effortlessly.

The history of Trieste’s Slovenian community bears the scars of the torments and oppression suffered during the twenty years of Italian Fascist rule.

Slovenian language was banished from public places, Narodni Dom was set on fire by the Fascist militia, Slovenian ministers were forced to say Mass in Italian – despite the fact that the diocese of Trieste had been led by Slovenian bishops from 1800 to the end of the Great War. Forbidden to speak their language in public, Slovenian natives kept their language alive in secret: the first clandestine act of resistance to Nazifascism. Today, Sunday service is still celebrated in Slovenian in the church of San Giovanni decollato.

Vladimir Bartol was born in 1903 in San Giovanni. His masterpiece Alamut was translated in 18 languages, and yet his name remains little known in Italy today. Santa Croce was the birthplace of architect Viktor Sulčič, who fled Fascist persecution seeking refuge in Argentina, where he designed Boca Juniors’ stadium “La Bombonera” in Buenos Aires. RAI’s Berlin correspondent Barbara Gruden was born in Trieste’s Slovenian community, like late Sergio Canciani, RAI’s Moscow correspondent of many years.

Triestino [Trieste’s dialect] is heavily influenced by Slovenian: witness terms such as clanz [narrow street, trail], zima [winter, especially referred to extremely cold weather], and brivez [barber]; curse words such as cudić [devil]; and classics, such as osmiza [which needs not translating], patok [little stream, creek], cisto [pennyless], and trdo [hard]. Unfortunately, some other words borrowed from Slovenian are used in derogatory expressions: the sentence “Parlar per za-kaj” [lit. “speaking za-kaj”, where the last word refers to the Slovenian zakaj (why)] means “speaking nonsense” and is used to describe someone with limited speaking abilities. Nei dieci anni successivi alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale a Trieste giunsero decine di migliaia di esuli istriani e tra le settanta e le ottantamila vi si stabilirono. Giunsero soprattutto agricoltori, pescatori e famiglie povere, senza una elevata istruzione scolastica. Con loro, oltre alla dignità che contraddistingue tutti i profughi del mondo, Trieste venne invasa dal dialetto istriano. Alcune aree della città videro una presenza di esuli maggiore di altre, come il caso di Chiarbola e della canzone Baiamonti di Toni Bruna, brillante cantautore triestino autore dell’attacco di questo articolo. Ogni popolo che viene costretto ad abbandonare la propria casa soffre di un trauma da sradicamento. Per questo, spesso, la sua comunità necessita di figure di riferimento. Gli scrittori Fulvio Tomizza e Pier Antonio Quarantotto Gambini, il vescovo monsignor Antonio Santin, ma anche lo stilista Ottavio Missoni (esule da Zara) sono parte dei molti rappresentanti di una istrianità che oggi, a causa della presenza sempre minore di diretti discendenti e all’omologazione degli stessi, vive la sua fase più difficile. Sono le loro parole a tener viva quell’identità. Sono le parole di Magazzino 18, lo spettacolo scritto ed interpretato da Simone Cristicchi sul dramma del confine orientale. La parlata si traduceva anche nei canti: sì, gli istriani erano un popolo che cantava. I cori sono ancora oggi un elemento che porta avanti quella tradizione, anche a Trieste. Ma si sa, la storia dell’umanità è contraddistinta da contrapposizioni. In questo triste fenomeno finisce anche l’istriano. I triestini rivolgono pesanti accuse ai profughi che arrivano in città. “Ghe regala le case”, “i istriani ne ruba el lavor” e quella fastidiosa nomea di popolo “sparagnino” che si traduceva in una barzelletta a sfondo razzista del tipo: “Sapete come si riconosce la casa di un istriano? C’è la carta igienica messa ad asciugare”. La lingua può diventare biforcuta, ma fortunatamente nell’era contemporanea tutto ciò sembra essere più vicino al miraggio che ad una quotidiana realtà. Oggi resistono alcune associazioni che portano avanti una storia significativa, nel tentativo di tenere viva l’identità istriana che altro non è che quell’elemento di origine latina sulle sponde dell’Adriatico orientale. Their words are stronger than memory, echoed in the script of Magazzino 18, the play on the tragedy of Italy’s eastern border written and interpreted by Italian singer and songwriter Simone Cristicchi. Their words and their songs: indeed, the Istrian people has a long-standing music tradition, which is still celebrated by local choirs today.

On 6th January, the night of Christmas Eve for the Serbian Orthodox Church, hundreds of observant Serbians flood into the church of San Spiridione –a truly intense and solemn moment.

La notte del Natale ortodosso la chiesa di San Spiridione viene assediata da centinaia di fedeli di nazionalità serba. La solennità del momento ha una intensità unica. Non è cambiato niente dai tempi in cui i primi serbi giunsero a Trieste, ancora ad inizio del XVIII secolo. Il tempio era stato costruito all’interno del perimetro del borgo Teresiano. Inizialmente greci e serbi avevano dato vita ad una vera e propria coabitazione dell’edificio sacro. Poi, proprio a causa della lingua da utilizzare nelle funzioni, i greci decisero di andarsene e di realizzare il proprio tempio sulle rive, a due passi da piazza Unità.

Ci sono due elementi serbi nella Trieste del XXI secolo: tutto ciò che affonda le radici nella prima ondata migratoria (quella originaria, potremmo dire così) e quella che risale tra la fine degli anni Ottanta e i Novanta del Novecento. Emigranti dai territori della Jugoslavia socialista, per raggiungere l’occidente, ma anche serbi scappati dai dintorni di Belgrado durante i bombardamenti del 1999. Tra le comunità storiche la serba rappresenta quella meno sofferente dal punto di vista demografico e la si può toccare con mano –anzi, ascoltare– in diversi punti della città. Piazza Garibaldi, il rione di San Giacomo (simile per certi versi a Belgrado, con le sue colline e i suoi versanti), ma anche alcuni locali del centro storico.

Il serbo è una lingua che i triestini non parlano, ma mangiano. Pljeskavice (le cosiddette svizzere, ma più saporite) e i čevapčiči sono la locale e privilegiata introduzione ai Balcani, quegli elementi che confermano come questa città possa essere definita, senza troppi problemi e con buona pace dei nazionalismi, anche un’appendice del mondo slavo. La comunità serba è stretta attorno alla sua chiesa, ma non disdegna l’approccio laico e l’incontro con le altre culture. Se sei nato a Trieste da famiglia serba è possibile che i genitori decidano di iscriverti alla scuola slovena: è una sorta di panslavismo di prossimità, senza disegni egemonici, né ambizioni territoriali. Il passato di Trieste ha visto il passaggio di grandi personaggi della storia. Per quanto riguarda la relazione tra i Balcani e la città emporio questo nome è Ivo Andrić, premio Nobel per la letteratura con il suo “Il ponte sulla Drina” e viceconsole per il Regno degli Sloveni, Croati e Serbi tra il 1922 ed il 1923. Children born in Trieste from Serbian parents are often enrolled in Slovenian schools − a sort of peaceful, modern-day Pan-Slavism.

On 6 th January, the night of Christmas Eve for the Serbian Orthodox Church, hundreds of observant Serbians flood into the church of San Spiridione – a truly intense and solemn moment, frozen in time as if nothing had changed since the early 18th century, when the first Serbian nationals set foot in Trieste. The Temple was built within the former walls of Borgo Teresiano, and it was shared between Greek and Serbian Orthodox worshippers. As Mass was celebrated in different languages, however, Greek nationals eventually decided to build their own Church on the Rive, overlooking the sea, and just a few steps from Piazza Unità d’Italia.

There are two main phases of Serbian migration to Trieste: the first one was mentioned above, and the second one dates back to 1980s and ‘90s. The latter involved both citizens of former socialist Yugoslavia leaving on their own accord, and Serbian war refugees who had fled the city of Belgrade after the 1999 bombings. Demographically speaking, the Serbian community of Trieste still thrives today, as one can see – or, rather, hear, in various neighbourhoods, such as Piazza Garibaldi, Rione San Giacomo (whose hills and slopes remind a little of Belgrade itself), and a few pubs and bars in the city centre.

Triestini do not normally speak Serbian –but their meals do: Pljeskavice [a tastier, more savoury version of the Italian svizzere ] and ćevapčići are city’s favourites and a direct line to the Balkans– despite what boat-rocking nationalistic spewers would have us all believe. Trieste’s Serbian community revolves around its Church, yet it enjoys a different, more laic side as well, open to the rest of the city and its numerous cultures. Children born in Trieste from Serbian parents are often enrolled in Slovenian schools −a sort of peaceful, modern-day Pan-Slavism, based on solidarity between Slavic cultures rather than territorial and/or hegemonic claims. The historic connection between the commercial hub of Trieste and the Balkans is personified by Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić, author of Na Drini ćuprija [The Bridge on the Drina] and vice-consul of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes’ Foreign Ministry’s mission at the Vatican from 1922 to 1923. Ci sono testi 100% triestini che i locals imparano a memoria fin da piccoli. E poi ci sono altri testi che i triestini scoprono e fanno propri a mano a mano che cresce il loro amore per la città. Si comincia alle elementari (pardon, alla scuola primaria), quando in classe si canta tutti insieme “Trieste mia”. Poi alle medie si studia la poesia del più grande poeta cittadino cercando di immaginare i luoghi che lo hanno ispirato.

Qualche anno più in là, a volte molto più in là, si scopre che anche uno dei più grandi cantautori italiani, un altro poeta, ha reso omaggio a questo posto così unico con una canzone che riassume perfettamente Trieste e la sua storia.

Sui titoli, ammettiamolo, non c’è gran fantasia, ma c’è sempre una grande passione per questa dimensione così unica al mondo.

Qui ci siamo divertiti a rubare dei frammenti e a incastrarli fra loro.

Il risultato è quello che i triestini in dialetto chiamerebbero un mismas (un miscuglio, una mescolanza) ma che sotto sotto è una lettera d’amore. In formato collage!

There are pieces that enshrine the very soul of Trieste, taught in schools and learned by heart by every young triestino. And there are passages that locals discover later in life, words that grow on them as they fall in love with their city. Children begin by learning the lyrics of the song “Trieste mia” [lit. my Trieste] in first grade, and then move on to local literature and poems written by Umberto Saba, Trieste’s own bard, whose powerful words are so evocative of and inspired by this city.

As they grow older, they discover the lyrics of one of Italy’s greatest songwriters, a true poet, whose tribute song to Trieste uniquely conveys the city’s very soul and memories.

Admittedly, the titles of these pieces are no example of creativity − yet, what they lack in imagination, they make up for in passion and the sincere love they convey for Trieste’s unique dimension. We selected a few fragments and combined them together. The resulting mismas [Trieste’s vernacular for “mix and match”] is a love letter – a jigsaw puzzle of words of love.

Perché il teatro è così presente in questa città, perché tanti teatri, tanti spettatori?

Trieste città di teatri... I fantasmi di quelli di un tempo che non esistono più: il vecchio e imbellettato San Pietro, l’elegante e nobile Armonia, il gigantesco anfiteatro Mauroner, lo sfortunato Filodrammatico, e poi l’Auditorium con i suoi spettacoli di avanguardia. I teatri trasformati in cinema (Eden, Excelsior, Fenice). E quelli che oggi vivono, il Verdi, il Rossetti, il Miela, l’Orazio Bobbio, l’Armonia, la Scuola dei Fabbri, lo Stabile Sloveno, La Barcaccia, l’Hangar Teatri… e che fanno di Trieste una città che il teatro lo respira nell’aria.

E assieme ai teatri penso al suo pubblico, e vedo i fantasmi nei palchi, e in galleria: e immagino Casanova, in fuga costante da mariti e creditori, o Massimiliano e Carlotta d’Asburgo, ancora sposi felici, e Svevo che vede Il Mercante di Venezia al Comunale e lo recensisce in pochi minuti, o Joyce che per otto sere, in due settimane, si incanta al Rossetti per la La Bohème di Puccini (non è un caso che egli abbia fatto della sua mezza triestina Molly Bloom una cantante d’opera). Triestini a teatro, triestini e teatranti… che belle allitterazioni. Perché poi “Trieste” e “teatri” sono nome proprio e sostantivo plurale che di suono si assomigliano molto, anzi sono quasi uguali, togli una “s” di là, una “a” di qua e fanno quasi la stessa parola. E non è un caso che, ad arrivarci da mare o da terra, Trieste te la vedi davanti e pare davvero una specie di teatro gigante, con le colline per fondale, il cielo per soffitto, e Piazza Unità che sembra davvero, con quel quarto lato aperto sul blu, un sontuoso e immenso palcoscenico, con gli eleganti palazzi bianchi a far da quinte. Ed è bello pensarla così perché di fronte a quel palco, dove sta la platea, c’è l’acqua, c’è il mare, ci sono le onde, ed è come se lei –la città– recitasse per quel pubblico lì, che la guarda ogni giorno e forse, chissà, anche l’applaude.

Everything in this city is amazing to me – this city, whose women and men smile and look and drink their coffees and let life unfold, with a sweetness that belongs to the days of old, and the expectation of tomorrow.

I am amazed by the open words, the sunny dialect, the intertwined languages, real or made up.

I marvel at the sea that ignites the hearts, and the hills that inspire the minds.

I marvel at the encounters, the knowledge, the present and the past, the love that was caught and the love that was lost, the kindness.

I marvel at the art and the music and the dance and the theatre.

I marvel at the games and sports, at

the readers leaning against the walls, at the swimmers reading the stars.

I marvel at the stars and the firmament.

Words move, music moves.

The city of theatres, the municipal counsellor for theatre, the audience of theatres – and the power, joy, emotions of theatres.

The city of theatres, of encounters, of light.

The open city, like her dialect, Molo Audace, her horizons, her sunsets, Miramare that grows smaller when you leave, and that sense of loss, of longing.

Why is theatre so dear to this city, why are there so many theatres, and such a great audience?

Trieste city of theatres... The ghosts of the theatres that are no longer: the old and pompous San Pietro, the elegant and aristocratic Armonia, the huge Mauroner amphytheatre, the ill-fated Filodrammatico, and also the Auditorium and its avant-garde plays. The theatres that were turned into cinemas (Eden, Excelsior, Fenice). And the theatres still standing today: Verdi, Rossetti, Miela, Orazio Bobbio, Armonia, Scuola dei Fabbri, Stabile Sloveno, La Barcaccia, Hangar Teatri… thanks to their presence theatre is in the very air Trieste breathes.

When I think of theatres I think at their audience, past and present, as ghosts populate the stage and balconies: I picture Casanova, always hiding from husbands and creditors; Maximilian I of Mexico and Charlotte of Belgium, when they were still a happy couple; Italo Svevo attending The Merchant of Venice at the Comunale and then writing his review in just a few minutes; James Joyce, when Puccini’s La Bohème was playing at Rossetti theatre and he was so enraptured by the performance that he attended eight nights in two weeks (no wonder that his Molly Bloom was an opera singer).

Triestini as theatre-goers, Triestini and theatre people… what a beautiful alliteration. Besides, the words “Triestini” and “ teatro ” [theatre] have similar sounds, and they are made of almost the same letters. As you approach Trieste, either via land or via sea, the city almost looks like a huge theatre, with her backdrop of hills, her ceiling of sky, her wings of white buildings, and Piazza Unità as her stage – a grand, sumptuous stage open to the sea. A parterre of blue water and waves, as if every night the city herself was putting on a show for her sea, that watches and cheers.

Fino al prossimo aprile, la mostra allestita al Salone degli Incanti di Trieste si propone come l’evento culturale di più grande appeal per la città e i suoi visitatori. Fortemente voluta dalla Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia e dal Comune di Trieste, la rassegna curata da Gianni Mercurio e organizzata da PromoTurismoFVG in collaborazione con Madeinart mette l’accento sul ruolo di grande “comunicatore” del misterioso artista inglese che a dispetto di un’identità ancora sconosciuta può essere considerato un’autentica icona dell’arte contemporanea, prima di tutto per quel suo linguaggio capace di creare attraverso messaggi di protesta autentiche metafore sul mondo e la società in cui viviamo. IES ne ha parlato con il curatore Gianni Mercurio che porta in esclusiva a Trieste una

nuova mostra su Banksy dopo il clamoroso successo di quella allestita cinque anni or sono al Mudec di Milano.

Gianni Mercurio, iniziamo chiedendo quello che tutti bene o male si domandano: come si fa ad allestire una mostra di opere di un artista che sceglie principalmente la street art e i graffiti per… esporre i suoi lavori?

“Domanda pertinente. E non posso che confessare che è estremamente complicato. Aggiungo poi che ancor oggi tra me e me dico che non sono mai riuscito a farne una come realmente avrei voluto. Ma resta una sfida bellissima. E quella che presentiamo a Trieste la reputo ancor più bella di quella che ha già avuto un grande successo a Milano. Cinque anni fa abbiamo parlato dell’arte di Banksy. Oggi abbiamo voluto sottolineare il suo ruolo di grande comunicatore nella storia dell’arte”.

Ma dove sta la difficoltà?

“Nel recuperare le sue opere, anche da collezioni private. Attorno a Banksy si è creato un muro che definirei quasi di omertà. A differenza di tutte le altre mostre, non troverai mai la collaborazione di galleristi e case d’arte. Non puoi certo dialogare con l’autore e nemmeno con le agenzie che si sono succedute al suo fianco, dalla POW (pictures on walls) alla Pest Control di oggi, la società di diritto istituita da Banksy per autenticare le sue opere che –lo ricordo– ci citò in giudizio per la rassegna milanese.”

Perché rassegna non autorizzata…?

“Ma tutte le mostre che allestiamo su Banksy sono assolutamente non autorizzate e ci teniamo a sottolinearlo chiaramente. Anche per questa ragione il giudice stabilì allora che le riproduzioni dei suoi lavori usati per

promuovere la mostra non rappresentarono una violazione”. Ma il successo di un artista come Banksy si deve anche a quella sorta di ossimoro che coniuga anonimato a notorietà?

“Senza dubbio Banksy è personaggio iconico oltre che per la sua incredibile capacità di comunicazione graffiante, intelligente, diretta ed originale, per l’alone di mistero che lo avvolge e per le sue incredibili performance come l’autodistruzione da Sotheby’s della raffigurazione della ragazza col palloncino. Una genialata che ha fatto il giro del mondo, messa in onda dalle televisioni dell’intero pianeta, ma che evidentemente è stata messa in scena con la complicità della stessa casa d’aste. Aggiungo che il fatto, avvenuto a poche settimane dall’apertura della nostra mostra a Milano è stata uno spot ineguagliabile per la rassegna,

decretandone un successo di pubblico inimmaginabile alla vigilia…”!

Mercurio, ci levi un’ultima curiosità. Quante volte si è chiesto chi sia o quanti anni abbia adesso Banksy?

“Di Banksy sappiamo che è un artista inglese, probabilmente originario di Bristol. Le sue prime performance sono datate 1988 quando doveva avere all’incirca vent’anni. Facciamo due conti e diciamo che oggi Banksy dovrebbe avere 55 anni all’incirca, non pochi per fare l’acrobata e disegnare murales, ma certamente ancora capace di stupire il mondo con altre opere che avete modo di vedere a Trieste. È una mostra dove portare anche ragazzi e bambini [sono previsti laboratori per i più piccoli, ndr]. Da non perdere, anche perché dopo Trieste, con Banksy chiudo. Troppo faticoso…”. E sorride.

Until next April, the exhibition set up at the Salone degli Incanti in Trieste will be the most fascinating cultural event for the city and its visitors.

Strongly supported by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the Municipality of Trieste, the exhibition curated by Gianni Mercurio and organised by PromoTurismoFVG in collaboration with Madeinart focuses on the role of great “communicator” of the mysterious British artist who, despite his still unknown identity, can be considered an authentic icon of contemporary art, first and foremost for his language capable of creating authentic metaphors on the world and society we are living in through messages of protest. IES has spoken about this with curator Gianni Mercurio, who brings a new Banksy exhibition exclusively to Trieste after the huge success of the one held five years ago at the Mudec in Milan.

Gianni Mercurio, let’s start by asking what everyone wonders: how do you set up an exhibition of works by an artist who mainly chooses street art and graffiti to... display his work?

‘Relevant question. And I can only confess that it is extremely complicated. I would also add that even today I say to

Why, was it an unauthorised exhibition?

“But all the exhibitions we put on Banksy are absolutely unauthorised and we would like to stress this clearly. It was also for this reason that the judge ruled at the time that the reproductions of his work used to promote the exhibition did not constitute an infringement”.

And the exhibition we are presenting in Trieste I think is even more beautiful than the one that was so successful in Milan. Five years ago we talked about Banksy’s art. Today we want to emphasise his role as a great communicator in the history of art’.

But where does the difficulty lie?

“In recovering his works, even from private collections. A wall has been built around Banksy that I would almost define as a wall of silence. Unlike all other art exhibitions, you never find the collaboration of gallery owners and art houses. You certainly can’t dialogue with the author, nor with the agencies that have followed him, from POW (pictures on walls) to today’s Pest Control, the company set up by Banksy to authenticate

But is the success of an artist like Banksy also due to that sort of oxymoron that combines anonymity and notoriety?

“Undoubtedly Banksy is an iconic character not only because of his incredible capacity for biting, intelligent, direct and original communication, but also because of the halo of mystery that surrounds him and his incredible performances such as the self-destructing Girl with Balloon painting at Sotheby’s. A geniality that went around the world, broadcast by televisions all over the planet, but which was evidently staged with the complicity of the auction house itself. I would add that the event, which took place just a few weeks before the opening of our exhibition in Milan, was an unparalleled advertisement for the exhibition resulting in an unprecedented public success on the eve of the event!”

Mercurio, tell us one last curiosity. How many times have you wondered who Banksy is or how old he is now?

“We know about Banksy that he is a British artist, probably originally from Bristol. His first performances are dated 1988 when he must have been about 20 years old. Let’s do the maths and say that today Banksy should be about 55 years old, not too young to be an acrobat and draw murals, but certainly still able to amaze the world with other works that you will see in Trieste. It is an exhibition where you can also bring young people and children (there are workshops for the little ones, ed). Not to be missed, also because after Trieste, I am closing with Banksy. It’s too tiring...’.

And he smiles.

Collections and treasures unveiled

Borsatti. Scatti in Comune” a palazzo Gopcevich. L’esposizione a cura di Claudia Colecchia, responsabile della Fototeca, è uno straordinario racconto visivo di Trieste, dal dopoguerra, quando la città non era giuridicamente italiana, sino ai tempi più recenti. 200 foto esposte, alcune del tutto inedite, che ritraggono personaggi noti o sconosciuti, le feste e i riti patrimonio della comunità come il Carnevale, la Sagra della sardella, le Nozze Carsiche, la Fiera di San Nicolò, nonché i luoghi più turistici o gli angoli di quartiere dove Ugo Borsatti ha abitato e ancora oggi lavora.

Il fotografo documenta gli ultimi anni del governo militare alleato con i tragici giorni del novembre 1953 a cui si affiancano le effervescenti immagini del ritorno dell’Italia a Trieste nel 1954 e l’intensità dei servizi dedicati alla partenza degli emigranti per terra o per mare.

Ma la foto più amata dall’autore è quella del bacio del soldato americano Jim Swaim e della mula triestina Graziella Cirrincione quando le truppe alleate lasciano Trieste nel 1954.

Tutte immagini che manifestano la capacità del fotografo di affrontare temi e linguaggi diversi con un accento sempre autenticamente inconfondibile.

COLLEZIONI E TESORI SVELATI

LNel 2022 ricadono due celebrazioni importanti per la storia dell’archeologia egizia: cent’anni dalla scoperta della tomba di Tutankhamon e dalla traduzione dei geroglifici.

Per onorare queste ricorrenze il Museo d’Antichità “J.J. Winckelmann” ha voluto dar risalto alla preziosa collezione egizia custodita, frutto di numerosi lasciti da parte dei cittadini e derivanti dall’intenso traffico mercantile del porto triestino, promosso dalla borghesia locale da sempre alla ricerca di oggetti di interesse artistico e con la passione del collezionismo.

Fin dal 1874, anno di fondazione del museo, le persone di ritorno dall’Egitto usavano portare donazioni e piccoli acquisti; così oggi la collezione,

quarta di importanza in Italia dopo Torino, Firenze e Milano, conta 1000 oggetti egizi, sarcofagi lignei con le mummie, una splendida serie di vasi canopi e fogli di papiro dipinto. Questa collezione civica di egittologia ha una rilevante importanza didattica e sottolinea il grande legame del museo con la città che ha di fatto contribuito negli anni a creare la collezione.

Un parallelismo che ci porta a pensare ai tanti tesori custoditi negli Archivi della Fototeca dei Civici Musei di Storia ed Arte di Trieste. The year 2022 marks two important celebrations in the history of Egyptian archaeology: one hundred years since the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and the translation of hieroglyphics.

To honour these anniversaries the “J.J. Winckelmann” Museum of Antiquities wanted to highlight the precious Egyptian collection it holds, the result of numerous bequests by citizens and from the heavy mercantile traffic in Trieste’s port, promoted by the local bourgeoisie that has always been in search of objects of artistic interest and with a passion for collecting.

Ever since 1874, the year the museum was founded, people returning from Egypt used to bring donations and small purchases; thus today the collection, fourth in importance in Italy after Turin, Florence and Milan, counts 1000 Egyptian objects, wooden sarcophagi with mummies, a splendid series of canopic jars and painted papyrus sheets.

This civic collection of Egyptology is of great educational importance and emphasises the museum’s close bond with the city that has in fact contributed to the collection over the years.

A parallelism that brings to mind the

many treasures stored in the Archives of the Photo Library of the Civic Museums of History and Art of Trieste. Over the years they have been enriched by citizens’ bequests and deposits such as Ugo Borsatti’s Foto Omnia Archive (350000 negatives, mostly on film, purchased by the Fondazione CRTrieste), the protagonist of the exhibition “Foto Omnia di Ugo Borsatti. Shots in the City” at Palazzo Gopcevich. The exhibition curated by Claudia Colecchia, head of the Photo Library, is an extraordinary visual account of Trieste, from the post-war period, when the city was not legally Italian, to more recent times. There are 200 photos on display, some of which have never been published before, depicting well-known or unknown personalities, the festivals and rituals that are the heritage of the community, such as Carnival, the Sardella Festival, the Karst Wedding, the San Nicolò Fair, as well as the most touristy places or corners of the neighbourhood where Ugo Borsatti lived and still works today. The photographer documented the last years of the Allied military government with the tragic days of November 1953, alongside the effervescent images of Italy’s return to Trieste in 1954 and the intensity of the reports dedicated to the departure of emigrants by land or sea. But the author’s favourite photo is the one of the kiss between the American soldier Jim Swaim and the Triestine girl Graziella Cirrincione when the allied troops left Trieste in 1954. These are all images that demonstrate the photographer’s ability to deal with different themes and languages with an accent that is always authentically unmistakable.

Un tempo i tappezzieri erano gli arredatori: tramite colori e finiture fornivano l’identità dei luoghi e l’emozione era data dalle varietà. Nella cultura italiana di un certo tipo, o in quella francese e inglese si utilizzavano degli stili ben precisi e dei materiali per rendere esclusivo un arredamento legato ad un periodo storico. Nino Perizzi, viaggiando molto e incontrando diverse culture, aveva scoperto nuovi stili da utilizzare all’interno delle case che normalmente la borghesia usava abitare. Cominciò ad introdurre nuove linee, cambiando le regole della decorazione, utilizzando non più la solita manifattura artigianale tipica classica, ma nuovi fornitori e designer che producevano arredi contemporanei del nord Europa, i quali creavano nuove sensazioni rendendo gli ambienti completamente diversi. Infatti, una volta, gli arredi erano solitamente austeri, si utilizzavano mobili scuri e pesanti, grandi tavoli e grandi sedie, tessuti scuri; da quel momento si cominciò a passare alla ricerca di qualcosa di più pulito, utilizzando forme più essenziali, materiali diversi e semplici come, ad esempio, le produzioni dei maestri scandinavi. Spariscono i fronzoli e la decorazione sul mobile; sono tutti gli elementi all’interno di una stanza a caratterizzare gli ambienti, dagli imbottiti alle finiture delle pareti, dai colori alle lampade. Il coordinamento di materiali diversi fornisce il nuovo stile di cui possiamo dire Perizzi fu il precursore.

Il colore diventa caratterizzante nelle sue case: verde mela, rosso, arancione, tutti colori molto forti abbinati a carte da parati e decorazioni murali. Si introducono gli specchi per dare

maggiore profondità. Nelle case ricche di decorazioni interne in gesso, stucchi e pavimentazioni particolari non viene più utilizzato un arredamento classico o coerente all’epoca ma un arredo pulito, ergonomico, dalle forme essenziali. Nel tempo poi dai colori così accesi si è passati alla scelta del non colore, con i tanti bianchi e grigi fino a tornare ai nostri tempi dove l’azzardo di qualche colore viene fuori.

Il movimento di design che partì quindi negli anni 60-70 e portato ancora oggi avanti da grandi aziende come Cassina, Knoll, Carl Hansen, introduce nel mercato nuovi prodotti, al tempo estremamente meno classici nonché razionali e puliti, ma che per assurdo con il tempo oggi sono diventati un grande classico dell’arredamento.Dietro ad ogni progetto di design c’è, poi, una storia, spesso fatta da influenze di vari stili e culture di mondi lontani che offrono ispirazione: pensiamo alla sedia CH24 prodotta da Carl Hansen e disegnata da Hans J. Wegner ispirata al mondo Ming. O ancora la Superleggera di Gio Ponti che deve l’ispirazione alla classica “sedia di Chiavari” simbolo dell’artigianato ligure dell’800.

Così come la natura anche il buon design non ha confini.

Once upon a time, upholsterers were the interior designers: through colours and finishes they provided the identity of places and emotion was given by variety. In the Italian culture or the French and English cultures, specific styles and materials were used to make a piece of furniture linked to a historical period exclusive.

Nino Perizzi, travelling a lot and meeting different cultures, had discovered new styles to be used inside the houses where the bourgeoisie normally lived. He began to introduce new lines, changing the rules of decoration, no longer using the usual typical classical craftsmanship, but new suppliers and designers producing contemporary furniture from northern Europe, which created new sensations by making the rooms completely different. In fact, in the past, furnishings were usually austere, using dark and heavy furniture, large tables and chairs, dark fabrics;

from that moment on, people began to move towards the search for something cleaner, using more essential forms, different and simple materials such as, for example, the productions of the Scandinavian masters. Gone are the frills and decoration on the furniture; it is all the elements within a room that characterise the room, from upholstery to wall finishes, from colours to lamps.

The coordination of different materials provides the new style of which we can say Perizzi was the forerunner.

Colour becomes a feature in his homes: apple green, red, orange, all very strong colours combined with wallpaper and wall decorations.

Mirrors are introduced to give greater depth. In houses with rich interior decorations in plaster, stucco and special flooring, classic or period-consistent furniture is no longer used, but clean, ergonomic furniture with essential shapes. Over time, then, from such bright colours we moved on to the choice of non-colour, with the many whites and greys, until we return to our own times where the boldness of a few colours comes to the fore.

The design movement that started in the 60s and 70s and is still carried

on today by major companies such as Cassina, Knoll and Carl Hansen, introduced new products to the market, which at the time were extremely less classical as well as rational and clean, but which have now become a great furniture classic.

Behind every design project there is a story, often made up of influences from various styles and cultures of distant worlds that offer inspiration: think of the CH24 chair produced by Carl Hansen and designed by Hans J. Wegner inspired by the Ming world. Or Gio Ponti’s Superleggera that owes its inspiration to the classic ‘Chiavari chair’ symbol of 19th century Ligurian craftsmanship.

Just like nature, good design has no boundaries.

demo in cine! Così diceva la celebre e autoctona esortazione di Tullio Kezich [andiamo al cinema, ndr].

“Trieste è una città dove il cinema cresce da solo, dilaga nelle strade” aggiungeva il critico cinematografico, commediografo, sceneggiatore e attore italiano nato a Trieste.

Perché alla fine il cinema è luogo di incontro e arte da vivere rigorosamente al buio delle sale. La prima volta al cinema da soli la ricordiamo tutti; è un rito di passaggio verso l’età adulta. A Trieste l’appuntamento, un tempo, era davanti alla Luminosa di via Carducci, una sorta di edicola a pannelli luminosi con la programmazione delle sale.

In questa città la grande passione delle persone per il mondo della cinematografia ha contribuito alla nascita di numerosi festival che da anni si svolgono in questo remoto lembo del nord est d’Italia, raggiungendo risultati incredibili e contribuendo a esaltare il carattere internazionale di Trieste. Non sarà un caso che dal 1987, proprio in questa terra di confine tra l’Occidente e un mondo Orientale ai quei tempi così diverso per cultura, economia e politica, si svolge il Trieste Film Festival, il principale

appuntamento italiano dedicato al cinema dell’Europa centro-orientale. Negli anni il Festival (Alpe Adria Cinema agli albori) è cresciuto grazie alla direzione della fondatrice Annamaria Percavassi. La direzione artistica è ora in mano a Nicoletta Romeo e Fabrizio Grosoli che continuano il lavoro con dedizione offrendo di anno in anno una proposta sempre più estesa. Siamo certi che l’edizione del 2023, in programma dal 21 al 28 gennaio, non vi deluderà!

Un altro festival entrato nel cuore di tutti gli appassionati del genere è il Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. Le prime edizioni dell’allora Festival del Film di Fantascienza si svolsero addirittura dal 1963 al 1982!

E per concludere non manca l’offerta culturale del Festival del Cinema IberoLatino Americano di Trieste organizzato dall’Associazione per la Promozione della Cultura Latinoamericana in Italia che, dal 1990, si distingue per la varietà di opere provenienti dal Centro e dal Sud America.

In this city, people’s great passion for the world of film has contributed to the emergence of numerous festivals that have been held for years in this remote corner of north-eastern Italy, achieving incredible results and helping to enhance the international character of Trieste.

demo in cine! So said Tullio Kezich’s famous and original suggestion [lit. let’s go to the cinema]. “Trieste is a city where cinema flourishes on its own, it spreads through the streets,” added the Trieste-born Italian film critic, playwright, screenwriter and actor.

Because in the end, cinema is a meeting and art place to be experienced strictly in the darkness of the theatres. We all remember the first time at the cinema alone; it is a rite of passage into adulthood. In Trieste, we

It is no coincidence that since 1987, in this borderland between the West and an Eastern world that at the time was so different in terms of culture, economy and politics, the Trieste Film Festival has been held. It is Italy’s main event dedicated to Central and Eastern European cinema. Over the years, the Festival (Alpe Adria Cinema in its early days) has grown thanks to the direction of founder Annamaria Percavassi. The art direction is now in the hands of Nicoletta Romeo and Fabrizio Grosoli, who continue the work with dedication, offering an ever-expanding proposal from year to year. We are certain that the 2023 edition, scheduled from 21 to 28 January, will not disappoint!

Another festival that has entered the hearts of all fans of the genre is the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival. The first editions of the Science Fiction Film Festival took place from 1963 to 1982!

There are two women behind the success of the traditional summer appointment with the International ShorTS Film Festival (originally Maremetraggio). Directed until 2011 by Maddalena Mayneri and then by Chiara Valenti Omero, since 2000 it has been offering a selection of the best international short films and the most interesting first works on the Italian film scene.

Cinema, as we know, offers a thousand interpretations and, thus, in 2002, Sergio Germani created I 1000 (o)cchi – Festival internazionale del cinema e delle arti, [lit. One thousand eyes – International Festival of Cinema and the Arts], a guide to a thousand possible looks and paths to rediscovering the production of the past.

And finally, there is the cultural offer of the Ibero-Latin American Film Festival of Trieste, organised by the Association for the Promotion of Latin American Culture in Italy, which, since 1990, has stood out for the variety of works from Central and South America.

Il legame con il dialetto è così forte che più di qualcuno ha deciso di usarlo come ‘marchio di fabbrica’ per i propri prodotti, attività o creazioni.

Non mancano gli omaggi al dialetto “alla Magritte”: ceci n’est pas un fapunte (per indicare che in italiano si dice temperamatite) e ceci n’est pas un trombino (galosce). “Sono due parole che i triestini sono così abituati ad usare –ha detto Sara–, da non sapere che è triestino e non italiano”.

Tachite al tram (attaccati al tram) è invece il gioco da tavolo realizzato da Diego Manna e Erika Ronchin, dedicato allo storico tram di Opicina. Le regole sono semplici: dovete usare le tessere per disegnare i percorsi delle rotaie, muovere il tram tra le fermate e caricare i passeggeri, facendo però attenzione alle incombenti disgrazie e alle incompatibilità tra i personaggi. “Siamo molto legati alla cultura della città e al nostro dialetto, quindi cerchiamo di inserirlo in tutti i nostri prodotti”, ha spiegato Diego Manna, assicurando che il regolamento è in italiano e che il gioco è adatto anche a chi non conosce il triestino. Tachite al tram è disponibile nei negozi e nelle librerie della città.

A due passi da San Giusto, nei pressi della Scaletta Joyce, troverete l’enoteca Morbin (via Donato Bramante 8/B), parola che in triestino indica la gioia di vivere, l’allegria e il desiderio di divertirsi. Quale modo migliore di lasciarsi andare al “morbin” se non quello di bere un buon bicchiere di vino prodotto in Friuli Venezia Giulia o una birra artigianale che arriva dalla vicina Istria? D’altronde lo dice anche l’asso di coppe delle carte triestine: “Una coppa di bon vin fa coraggio fa morbin”.

Al di là del dialetto, c’è una parola che piace proprio a tutti: Trieste. Se siete in cerca di un amaro dal gusto unico, non potete perdervi l’Amaro Trieste di Piolo e Max. Ispirato agli infusi farmaceutici, l’amaro che porta il nome della città è una miscela di ben 12 erbe (tra cui luppolo, tarassaco e eucalipto): “Al primo assaggio sembra amaro ma nella persistenza, che è estremamente lunga per un prodotto di questo tipo, si percepiscono le note erbacee. L’eucalipto e il cumino lo rendono fresco” ha spiegato Elena Debetto, braccio destro di Paolo e Max. Un amaro che ricorda il carattere di Trieste: “a volte può essere molto duro all’inizio, ma poi si apre in una moltitudine di punti di vista e gusti diversi”. Ottimo anche come aperitivo miscelato con tonica (Triestonic). Lo potete assaggiare ed acquistare alla Piccola Bottega Spiritosa di Piolo&Max in via Felice Venezian 11. Note di sale e alghe marine, un cuore di mughetto e orchidea bianca ed un fondo di muschio bianco, sandalo e legno di cedri virginia che sigilla il ricordo delle onde che si infrangono sugli scogli. Aria di Trieste è un profumo realizzato e ideato dalla profumeria Il Tulipano per omaggiare la città ed elaborato con l’antica tecnica dell’infusione da Federico Cantelli, il più giovane naso profumiere italiano. D’altronde, gli odori risvegliano i ricordi, come descritto da Proust nel romanzo ‘Alla ricerca del tempo perduto’. Ed è così che memorie di una città cullata dal vento e dal mare vengono custodite in boccette di vetro dal design particolarmente curato. A rendere la fragranza ancora più originale, sono le illustrazioni della triestina Greta Fila. Recentemente, è uscita anche una versione letteraria: apre una ventata di caffè a cui fa seguito un abbraccio alla vaniglia. Take illustrator Sara Paschini’s business A Trieste volentieri [Gladly in Trieste], located at no. 13/A of Via Alfieri: you may not be aware that the Italian term “volentieri” [gladly] has a very peculiar meaning when uttered in Trieste, as it stands for “gladly I would do it if I could (but I cannot)” – in other words, it is a polite way of saying “no”. Paschini’s beautiful illustrations draw inspiration from the work of Wes Anderson and depict unique glimpses of the city’s historical shops and cafés in extraordinary detail. Her product line includes a few Magritte-style tributes, such as ceci n’est pas un fapunte (local term for pencil sharpener) and ceci n’est pas un trombino (local term for rubber boot). According to Sara, “People here are so used to these two terms that most of them do not realise they come from our dialect and do not belong to standard Italian”.

Tachite al tram [dialect expression corresponding to the Italian “attaccati al tram”, lit. “hold on to the tram”, colourful expression corresponding to the English “tough cookies”, “deal with it”] is the name of Diego Manna and Erika Ronchin’s board game as a tribute to Opicina’s historical tram. The rules are simple: players use their tiles to trace the rails, move the tram in between stops, and let passengers on, while avoiding impending disasters and solving characters’ incompatibilities. While “being very attached to our city and its dialect, which we try to include in all our products”, Diego Manna promises that the game

rules are written in standard Italian and the game can be easily played by non-native Triestino speakers. Tachite al tram is available for purchase in Trieste’s bookshops and toy stores.

At no. 8/B Via Donato Bramante, near San Giusto and just a stone’s throw away from the steps of Scaletta Joyce, there is a wine shop, whose name, Morbin, is the triestino word for merriment, conviviality, and zest for life. And what better way to enjoy the morbin than sipping from a glass of excellent local wine or Istrian craft beer? After all, even the Ace of Cups [one of the suits of Italian-suited decks of cards, N/T] from the Triestine deck seems to agree: “Una coppa di bon vin fa coraggio fa morbin” [loosely translated as “a cup of good wine / makes you braver makes everything fine”, N/T].

Dialect aside, there is one word that everyone likes and agrees on: Trieste. If tonic liquor is your poison, then Piolo and Max’s Amaro Trieste is what you are looking for: inspired by traditional apothecary’s infusions, this amaro [bitter] is a blend of 12 different herbs (including hops, dandelion, and eucalyptus). Paolo and Max’s right-hand woman Elena Debetto describes Amaro Trieste as follows: “The first sip will unleash its predominant bitter taste − yet, as you hold it in your mouth, you will be able to taste the herbal flavours, whose loop lingers on your palate for an exceptionally long time compared to similar bitters. Eucalyptus and cumin lend a pleasantly fresh note to its finishing. In other words, it may seem quite strong and hard to get used to, at first, but if you take your time to really savour it, it discloses a multitude of flavours and interpretations”. Just like Trieste herself. Neat, diluted, or blended with tonic water (the Triestonic aperitif), Amaro Trieste can be tasted and

purchased at Piolo&Max’s Piccola Bottega Spiritosa (no.10 of Via Felice Venezian).

Top notes of salt and seaweed, a heart of lily of the valley and white orchid, and back notes of white musk, sandal, and red cedar, which seal the memory of waves breaking on the cliffs: this is Aria di Trieste [air of Trieste, N/T], an original fragrance by Il Tulipano perfumery and a tribute to the city. Resulting from the ancient infusion technique of perfume making, Aria di Trieste is an exclusive creation of Italy’s youngest perfumer: Federico Cantelli. Scents and fragrances awaken memories, as illustrated by French novelist Marcel Proust in his monumental novel In Search of Lost Time: the memories of Trieste, a city cradled by the sea and rocked by the wind, are now preserved in exquisitely designed glass bottles, enriched by Trieste-born artist Greta Fila’s illustrations. There is also a perfume version devoted to Trieste’s literature, with top notes of coffee and a heart of vanilla. Coffee glossary

Se pensate di entrare in un bar a Trieste e ordinare semplicemente “un caffè” avete sbagliato di grosso! La risposta che riceverete sarà “Nero?” Non pensiate che qui si servano dei caffè colorati, solo che ogni preparazione ha un suo termine ben preciso, che spesso è una contrazione di un locuzione ben più articolata. Già perché in questa città tutti vanno di corsa, non si sa bene dove, forse sospinti dalla bora. Già il termine espresso indica qualcosa da consumare rapidamente, a Trieste poi, deve essere veloce come…il vento! Quindi anche il modo di comunicare deve essere rapido e facilmente comprensibile, come fosse un messaggio in codice.

Da dove deriva questo specifico vocabolario? La tradizione legata ai

diversi stili di preparazione arriva dalla cultura viennese che possiede una carta dei caffè molto vasta e varia a seconda della quantità di latte, del tipo di tazzina, della proporzione tra caffè e latte o dalla presenza di panna o altri ingredienti. I triestini l’hanno resa propria aggiungendo altre varianti ancora e accorciando il tempo di ordinazione perché in origine servire un caffè espresso prevedeva diversi passaggi tra barista, banconiere e macchinista, quindi richieste troppo complesse avrebbero reso ancora più difficile farle arrivare a destinazione in modo corretto. Come nel gioco del telefono senza fili, la parola originaria si sarebbe smarrita nei vari passaggi di mano. È così che venne creato, intorno agli anni 50, un vero e proprio vocabolario. Ecco perché oggi il “nero” equivale a un espresso tradizionale in tazza piccola mentre se volete un decaffeinato basterà chiamarlo “deca”. La variante più tipica da veri autoctoni è però il “Capo in B” ma qui le cose si fanno complicate. Già perché il “capo” non è la semplice contrazione del cappuccino, che invece stranamente si chiama “caffelatte”.

È invece la riduzione della riduzione, ovvero un cappuccino piccolo, che nel

resto d’Italia si chiamerebbe “macchiato”. E quel “in B” per cosa sta? No la B non sta per Bloom, ma per “bicchiere”, che tradizionalmente è quello sfaccettato tipico da osteria. Ora già con questi 3 elementi potete sbizzarrirvi con i vari incastri come in un puzzle e provare a comporre la vostra ordinazione ideale come il “Nero in B”, il “Deca in B” fino al complicatissimo “Capo deca in B”. Lasciamo scoprire a voi le innumerevoli altre varianti con la rispettiva contrazione locale passeggiando tra i diversi caffè storici. Ma state attenti a non far innervosire il barista!

If you think you can simply stand at the counter and say “Coffee, please”, think again! At the very least, you will be asked “ Nero [black]?” – because here, in Trieste, coffee preparation is a serious business, and behind every word there is usually an entire sentence, describing an equally complex process. These contractions and abbreviations are necessary –after all, when the Bora wind blows, it is too cold to linger. Besides, the very term espresso means “swift, quickly made and rapidly consumed”–or, as Trieste would have it, swift like the wind! As a result, communication must be straightforward and direct, almost like a code.

Where does the coffee glossary of Trieste originate from? Undoubtedly, Vienna coffee culture played a pivotal role in establishing most of its terms here, according to a long-standing taxonomy tradition depending on milk dosage, cup type and size, milk-coffee ratio, and addition of any other ingredient, such as whipped cream, for instance. Triestini learned it all and made it their own, introducing further variations and drastically shortening the time needed to order – which

originally involved several passages, from the barista, to the person at the counter, to the one in charge of the coffee machine… with such a long chain of communication, the more complex the order, the higher the chance of getting it wrong (almost like a bush telegraph operation). Which is why a full-fledged glossary was created in the 1950s, a glossary that is still used today.

So, you have your “nero”, which is a traditional espresso served in a small coffee cup, and your “deca”, namely a decaf version of the nero. Real connoisseurs, however, usually order a “ Capo in B ”. Be careful, though: “ capo ” is not short for cappuccino (which here is called “caffelatte”). It stands for “small cappuccino”, which is known as “macchiato ” in the rest of Italy. And what does “ in B ” mean? Not Bloom, but “bicchiere” [glass] – the size of a small juice glass. These three elements can be further mixed and matched to compose your order: “Nero in B”, “Deca in B”, “Capo deca in B”… have fun finding out all the combinations you can get –possibly, without irritating your barista. The choice of words is crucial, especially when it comes to coffee… word of Bloom!

The protagonists of this Portfolio are women and men who ‘work’ with words. Journalists, writers, publishers, creators and event organisers, who have a common denominator: the culture of communication. The lens of the very young Camilla Bach has portrayed them in what are the temples of words and, by extension, also of writing: cafés. In a city with an international outlook like Trieste, they are a pagan place of worship with a timeless fascination.

Historic cafés rather than beating hearts in charming hotels, as well as in the latest generation of hotels, provide the backdrop for the artisans of writing, who have chosen one word each to tell their story and narrate their relationship with writing and life.

Lo sappiamo bene anche noi giornalisti, che ogni giorno creiamo il giornale e lo riempiamo di notizie. Anche se da anni viene annunciata la morte della carta stampata a causa dei media digitali, noi sappiamo di avere lettori fedeli che apprezzano la qualità e il piacere di sentire la carta tra le dita.

Writing in Slovene in an Italian-dominated environment is a responsible job. The Slovenian community appreciates being able to read a newspaper in their mother tongue. We journalists, who create the newspaper every day, also know this well. Even though the death of print media due to digital media has been heralded for years, we know that we have loyal readers who appreciate its quality and the feeling of paper between their fingers.

This word is particularly dear to me, as it is synonym to my city, Trieste. Community to me means the one I helped build within #TriesteSocial project to promote the city’s online profile,but also the positive and proactive Parole O_Stili to fight online hate.

Nata a Trieste nel 1993. Due anni fa è tornata nella sua città natale dove ha fatto della fotografia il suo mestiere, dopo aver trascorso 9 anni all’estero. Ha studiato infatti fotografia presso l’International Center of Photography a New York e si è poi laureata in Fine Arts & History of Art alla Goldsmiths University di Londra. A New York ha lavorato con Nan Goldin, che ha influenzato profondamente il suo percorso artistico e professionale.

–Born in Trieste in 1993. Two years ago she returned to her hometown where she made photography her profession, after spending 9 years abroad. She studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York and then graduated in Fine Arts & History of Art at Goldsmiths University in London. In New York, she worked with Nan Goldin, who has deeply influenced her artistic and professional career.

Come si traduce la multiculturalità triestina, enogastronomicamente parlando?

I crocevia di genti e culture, come storicamente è sempre stata la nostra città, non possono non tradursi anche in melting pot culinari, dove ricette delle rispettive tradizioni si adattano agli ingredienti reperibili sul luogo, magari trasformandosi in qualcosa di nuovo (come i montini alle mandorle, di cui parliamo nell’articolo).

Al tempo stesso, volevamo darvi idee e luoghi –assaggiando, degustando e preparando le vostre tavole– per celebrare le festività. E ci è venuta l’idea di un abecedario multiculturale della Trieste enogastronomica, anche per portare alla vostra attenzione realtà e prodotti che, forse, non conoscete e dovreste conoscere.

How does one translate Trieste’s multicultural cuisine?

A crossroad of peoples and cultures, especially with a long-standing tradition like the one of our beautiful city, cannot help but incorporate such experience into a culinary melting pot, where traditional recipes from different countries evolve and adapt to local ingredients, sometimes developing into entirely new delicacies (like Trieste’s almond montini, mentioned below). With the season’s festivities approaching, our team has put together a selection of ideas and destinations, hoping to provide useful suggestions for your palate and your holiday table. The resulting primer of Trieste’s multi-cultural cuisine is our gift to our readers, who may even discover a product or two they had not heard of before – but will never again do without.

Acciuga

AL’acciuga dell’Alto Mar Adriatico sotto sale, a Trieste, ve la regala Cape Trieste. I pesci provengono dal nostro golfo fino alla Dalmazia, raccolti da imbarcazioni di piccola pesca, lavorati a mano e messi in spremitura sottosale dai 12 ai 18 mesi.

Pochi ingredienti: solo miscela di olii istriani, ed il sale, privo di impurità, dell’isola di Dugi Otok (Isola Lunga). Sono sul mercato da pochissimi mesi!

Luca, varesotto, ed Emanuela, napoletana, hanno aperto uno spazio che finalmente rende giustizia ai vini naturali del territorio ma non solo. Anchovy Cape Trieste is the place to go if you wish to enjoy the real taste of high-Adriatic cured anchovies. The catch of the day comes straight from small fishing vessels working the Gulf between Trieste and the Dalmatian coast. The staff do their own filleting, steaking, skinning, and butchery, including a 12-to-18-month salt-curing process. Just few, top-quality ingredients: a blend of Istria olive oils and highpurity salt from Dugi Otok Island. And it just opened a few months ago!

Cinese

Luca, born in Varese, and Emanuela, born in Naples, are the owners of Enoteca e Vineria Bottiglia Volante (lit. flying bottle wine shop): a business finally able to do justice to local natural wines –and more: alongside biological and biodynamic wines, skincontact white (amber) wines, and champagne, Bottiglia Volante also offers an excellent selection of cured meat, shieling toma cheese (i.e. soft or semi-hard Italian cow’s milk cheese, N/T), a wide range of Italian and international cheese, as well as Slow-Food Presidia. Just the perfect spot for an alternative lunch break or a delicious happy hour.

Xiaohua (Alba, in italiano) è originaria della provincia di Zhejiang. Cuoca e titolare del ristorante cinese Fiore di Loto in Piazza Belvedere, prepara ogni ricetta  da zero, nulla è surgelato. Dall’impasto dei ravioli agli involtini fa tutto in casa, è la bellezza sta nel poterla ammirare mentre salta i piatti negli wok, attingendo con maestria spezie e ingredienti con un mestolo: la porta della cucina è sempre aperta e se vi capita di ordinare un takeaway, vi consigliamo di arrivare 5 minuti prima per vederla all’opera. Ravioli e anatra alla piastra sono un must. A Trieste, si avvicina più di chiunque altro a una proposta gastronomica cinese autentica.

C–Chinese Xiaohua (Chinese word for “dawn”) was born in the Zhejiang province and is now the owner and chef of Chinese restaurant Fiore di Loto (i.e. Lotus flower) located in Piazza Belvedere. There is no frozen food in her kitchen, every dish is made fresh: from the dough of her dumplings to her spring rolls, everything is handmade – and the whole process is on display. Patrons can admire Xiaohua’s skilful movements as she sautés her ingredients, or carefully selects her spices: the door to her kitchen is always open, even for take-away meals − you just need to be there five minutes before collection time to see her at work. Her specialties are dumplings and grilled duck – Trieste’s closest offer to authentic Chinese cuisine.

L’oste Luca voleva prima di tutto aprire uno spazio dove tutti, nessuno escluso, si sentissero a casa. L’eccellente selezione vini offre il meglio del panorama biologico ed è frutto di appassionata ricerca. Non manca una piccola selezione di birre artigianali e taglieri di salumi e formaggi locali da gustare sorseggiando un ottimo vino. È l’aperitivo che non c’era, di fronte a Piazza Hortis in Via dell’Annunziata. –

Innkeeper Luca’s main goal was to create a place where everyone could feel at home, no exceptions. His excellent selection of bio wines results from his passion and painstaking research. Every glass of wine (or craft beer) is accompanied by a plate of local cured meats and cheese. Just the aperitif that the doctor ordered – served in Via dell’Annunziata, facing Piazza Hortis.

Dolci

Se cercate un panettone finalista al concorso mondiale (e la Sacher più buona in città?) precipitatevi in Via Carpison 7. Regalare emozioni è l’obiettivo - riuscitissimo - della Pasticceria Liberty. Selezione sempre in aggiornamento di piccoli produttori di materie prime artigianali di alta qualità.

A Opicina –dove molti iniziano la loro esplorazione del Carso, magari salendo con il Tram che ci auguriamo riparta a breve–c’è una bottega irrinunciabile.

Le Fattorie del Latte offrono prodotti carnici a base di latte crudo, pane da lievito madre ed una vasta selezione di altre eccellenze gastronomiche.

Oltre ad una ricerca del bello, che si traduce in centinaia di splendide idee regalo per la casa. Entrate e perdetevi tra gli scaffali.

In Opicina, right at the end of the line the Tram used to ride −and will, hopefully, ride again soon− to connect the city centre to Karst trails, visitors can find Fattorie del Latte (lit. dairy farms). Here, wandering through the shelves, you will find yourself spoilt for choice among raw-milk products from Carnia, sourdough bread, local delicacies, and countless, delightful gift ideas and home decoration items.

Gin

Un gin unico di straordinaria aromaticità e complessità organolettica, nato dalla passione per l’apicoltura e i distillati. Attenti: Honeygin di Farma Jakne, su base di ginepro e limone, può facilmente diventare il vostro gin preferito.

Hops beerstrò

“Cucine lontane e birre artigianali” è il claim oltremodo azzeccato. Cercate un padthai che vi ricordi davvero della Thailandia? O siete a caccia del miglior ramen in città? menù stagionali sapientemente sviluppati da chef Ian Ciabatti (origini australiane) e Andrew Pik (origini cinesi) deliziano i palati amanti del fusion. E ringraziate il proprietario Teo Beltrame (triestino “patocco”) per la miglior selezione di birre artigianali in città.

Itinerante

A Trieste sembrava impossibile non trovare una proposta kosher. Per nostra fortuna è arrivata Gloriana Bevitori, triestina ma cittadina del mondo (come spesso accade). Il suo GlamCasher è un food truck attrezzatissimo, una cucina su ruote a tutti gli effetti specializzata in piatti della tradizione ebraica ma non solo. Se state pensando a un catering di bagel, falafel o montini di mandorle (dolce triestino per la festività del Purim), sapete chi chiamare.

Itinerant

Libanese Adonis, in via San Francesco, offre uno sguardo sulla cucina libanese. Il proprietario Fadlallah propone leggere rivisitazioni di piatti tradizionali, con un carta vini esclusivamente libanese. –Lebanese Trieste’s Lebanese cuisine resides in Via San Francesco: at Adonis restaurant owner Fadlallah treats his patrons with traditional recipes as well as new interpretations, and an impressive selection of Lebanese wines.

Trieste’s culinary landscape would not be complete without kosher food. Gloriana Bevitori, born and raised in Trieste, yet citizen of the world at heart, is the mastermind behind GlamCasher: a fully equipped food truck, a full-fledged kitchen on wheels specialising in Jewish traditional recipes and much more. GlamCasher is the perfect catering service for a lunch or buffet dinner of bagels, falafel, and almond montini (Trieste traditional pastries, typically served for the Jewish holiday of Purim).

Their social media profile is quite fitting: “Distant recipes and craft beers”. If you are looking for a pad thai that really tastes like the original or the best ramen in town, Hops beerstrò is the place to go. Chef Ian Ciabatti (Australian origin) and chef Andrew Pik’s (Chinese origin) carefully puttogether seasonal menus are a true delight for the palate of fusion cuisine enthusiasts.

Trieste-born owner Teo Beltrame deserves the credit for Hops’ impressive selection of craft beers.

Mimì e Cocotte Giovanna (deus ex machina della cucina)  è una tosco/ emiliano/romagnola nata a Roma e vissuta a Napoli. Davide (responsabile della fantastica carta vini) è un istriano/pugliese che ha vissuto a Bologna e Roma. Ecco Mimì e Cocotte, che rispecchia le loro origini portando piatti del centro Italia eseguiti alla perfezione con materie prime ricercate e locali. Ci sono pure influenze giapponesi (Giovanna ci ha lavorato fianco a fianco a Bologna) con serate ramen invernali e bowl estive. E i brunch (inclusa l’opzione anglosassone con tanto di salsiccette custom e baked beans) sono da urlo.

Giovanna, cuisine virtuoso, was born in Rome, has lived in Naples, and can boast Tuscany and Emilia Romagna ancestry. Davide, wine connoisseur, is Istrian-Apulian by birth and has lived in Bologna and Rome. Their collaboration resulted in a menu and wine list that celebrates their respective origins and influences, starting from Mimì e Cocotte’s flagship dishes of central Italy’s culinary tradition and containing only top-quality local ingredients. Other influences include Japanese and Anglo-Saxon recipes, such as Giovanna’s winter ramen and summer bowls (which she learned to make while in Bologna), as well as her mouth-watering weekend brunches with custom sausages and baked beans.

La N la dedichiamo a una ricetta che crea dipendenza. Perfetta per le festività, renderà ogni aperitivo un simpatico siparietto di ospiti che si leccano le dita. Ed è facile da preparare

Ingredienti: 200g noci 200g anacardi 200g arachidi 200g nocciole 100g zucchero 50g burro

Succo di 1 limone ½ cucchiaio sale ½ cucchiaio peperoncino piccante ½ cucchiaio cumino indiano in polvere

Due gambi rosmarino fresco

Direzioni: In una ciotola mescolate tutte le noci con le spezie secche ed il succo di limone. Mettete burro, zucchero, rosmarino intero e un bicchiere d’acqua in un pentolino. Portate ad ebollizione, poi cuocete a fuoco lento per qualche minuto. Versate il composto nella ciotola e mescolate tutti gli ingredienti. Riponete le noci su una teglia da forno, ben sparpagliate in modo da cuocerle uniformemente. Infornate a 180°C per circa 15-20 minuti, a metà cottura mescolate, affinché non si attacchino. Lasciare raffreddare fino a indurimento.

The letter N in our primer stands for a recipe that can be addictive: spiced nuts. They are the perfect complement to your holiday aperitifs and are ridiculously easy to make.

Ingredients:

200g (7 oz) walnuts 200g (7 oz) cashew nuts 200g (7 oz) peanuts 200g (7 oz) hazelnuts

100g (ca. 4 oz) sugar

50g (ca. 2 oz) butter

Juice of 1 freshly squeezed lemon

½ tbsp salt sale

½ tbsp ground hot cayenne pepper

½ tbsp ground Indian cumin 2 fresh rosemary sprigs

Directions:

Combine walnuts, cashew nuts, peanuts, and hazelnuts in a large bowl. Add salt, cayenne, cumin, and lemon juice; toss to coat. Heat sugar, butter, rosemary, and a glass of water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved, about 1 minute.

Slowly pour butter mixture over nuts and stir to coat. Transfer nuts to a baking sheet and spread into a single layer. Preheat the oven to 175-180 degrees C (350 degrees F). Bake nuts in the preheated oven for 10 minutes. Stir nuts. Return to the oven and bake until nuts are sticky and roasted, about 6 to 10 minutes. Allow to cool before serving.

OOlio extravergine d’oliva La raccolta (finalmente abbondante) è finita da poco ed è possibile iniziare a degustare i primi extravergine freschi del territorio. Provate la varietà autoctona Bianchera, ha un elevato contenuto di polifenoli (antiossidanti naturali) e una caratteristica nota amara e piccante. Vi consigliamo vivamente la Tergeste DOP o ancor meglio il Presidio Slow Food.

Il Greco che non ti aspetti, che ti fa davvero sentire in Grecia (oltre che a casa). Con una capacità rara per la battuta pronta ed elegante, Konstadinos Papalexis è un One Man Band incredibile, che rivisita i piatti della tradizione greca dando assoluta importanza al prodotto locale di qualità. Un diamante per intenditori –

PAt Pigreco SAS Bistrot (named after the Italian term for “pi”) you will feel both at home and in Greece at the same time. His surprising and sophisticated sense of humour and his ability to reinterpret Greek traditional recipes with top-quality local ingredients are among the best qualities of the owner, Konstadinos Papalexis, whose one-man-show restaurant is a must for true connoisseurs.

This year’s harvest was rich (finally) and it is now time to enjoy the first bottles of extra virgin olive oil, fresh from the press. Autochthonous variety Bianchera’s composition is high in polyphenols (natural antioxidants) and is marked by a typically bitter flavour and a predominantly peppery taste (i.e. stinging sensation lingering in your throat). Our recommendations: Tergeste DOP and, more generally, one of the region’s Slow Food Presidia.

Ed è stagione di cotechini, musetti e zamponi, che potete trovare sia in Carso nelle osmize e negli agriturismi, che in città nei buffet, dove non dovete perdervi il classico panino di lingua, senape e cren. Oppure provate il Mood, in Via delle Beccherie, che ha in menù il lampredotto, le animelle e i ravioli di cuore.  –

Offal (or pluck) recipes are sustainable and celebrate every single part of a butchered animal. Seasonal delicacies include cotechino, musetti (i.e. local sausage made from pigs’ snouts), and zampone (ham hock), populating the menus of Karts osmize and holiday farms, as well as Trieste’s city buffets –the traditional lingua sandwich with mustard and kren is a must. We recommend a lookin at Mood restaurant (Via delle Beccherie), to try the chef’s lampredotto, animelle (sweetbread), and heart dumplings.

Irin Parvin Khan, originaria del Bangladesh, è riuscita con grazia, eleganza ed un sorriso ad ogni cliente a creare il luogo fondamentale per chiunque voglia cimentarsi con ricette etniche internazionali. L’ingrediente fondamentale di questo progetto birricolo made in Trieste è il pane invenduto, che sostituisce il 25% del malto in ricetta. Thrst (splendido copy, tra parentesi) nasce da un progetto di economia circolare per ridurre gli sprechi alimentari attraverso l’upcycling.

The key ingredient of this beer-making project is dayold bread, which replaces up to 25% of malt from the original recipe. Thrst beer (pun intended) is the result of this virtuous project of circular economy aimed at food waste valorisation through upcycling.

If you have never heard of VUD before, you really have to make amend: their iconic plates of cold cuts and cheese demand it! Un po’ negozio di alimentari gourmet, un po’ gastronomia ricercata, Palato Salsamenteria ha trovato casa nel cuore di Cavana, nella parte della città più antica e più all’avanguardia in fatto di tendenze. La dimensione dei sapori di una volta e delle prelibatezze più innovative.

Il “Palato” è prima di tutto un posto, il quartier generale del senso del gusto.

Il luogo privilegiato per vivere il piacere della bontà. Non a caso si parla di gioie del palato, un diletto che non si ferma alla bocca e si gode con corpo e mente.

“Salsamenteria” rimanda alla tradizione di un mondo delle antiche insegne e di sapori senza età, una parola lunga lunga perché ci vuole tempo a leggerla, proprio come ci vuole tempo a fare le cose più buone. Giusto per fare dei nomi: ci vuole tempo per fare i salumi e i formaggi come quelli di Zidarich a km zero, oppure come le mozzarelle che

arrivano fresche e puntuali da Salerno ogni martedì, giovedì e sabato, oppure lo Smo’king, il formaggio premiato come miglior erborinato del 2022.

Tutta roba per palati fini che si può assaporare anche sul posto.

Sui tavolini all’aperto, provate le acciughe del Cantabrico di Armatore con del burro démi sel bretone su una bella fetta di pane caldo in compagnia di un buon calice di Franciacorta, una

Vitovska del Carso o uno degli ottimi vini della cantina, raffinata e ben fornita con etichette da tutto il Friuli Venezia Giulia.

“Palato”, per gli amici, è nato da un’idea di Massimo Di Martino, Giuseppe Di Napoli e Nicola Tessaris, veri fan della buona cucina, uniti dalla passione nel proporre tutte le delizie nello stile del classico pizzicagnolo. “Assaggia questa, prova quest’altra…” Delizie vicine, made in Carso, e altre più lontane come la pasta Pietro Massi. Perfino autentiche rarità come il pregiato salmone norvegese prodotto da un emiliano che seleziona i salmoni in Norvegia e li affumica con legno italiano! Un assortimento di prodotti fatti con cura, compresa la gastronomia fresca, tutta prodotta artigianalmente nel Laboratorio di Palato, da acquistare e gustare in un’atmosfera capace di diventare subito amica.

Non mancano i dolci, dalla pinza triestina realizzata da Pintaudi espressamente per Palato, ai Cantucci di Antonio Mattei, ai krumiri della pasticceria Mamu, e in esclusiva a Trieste, la pasticceria di Bagh’is. Agli amanti della birra “Palato” dedica marchi di prestigio come Baladin, dal Piemonte, o Gjulia, da Cividale.

Nella “salsamenteria” c’è perfino la spuma, oltre a una selezione di toniche classiche e aromatizzate perfette per il Ginterior Xedequa, l’Old Tom Gin made in FVG.

The palate (literal translation of “Palato”) is first and foremost the headquarter of our fifth sense, i.e. taste, where one can truly enjoy the pleasure of refined food. A delight that does not end in the mouth, but reaches every corner of our being, a full-fledged round experience of body, mind, and soul.

“Salsamenteria” refers to a time of old, when shops had hanging wooden signs and food tasted like heaven – a long and difficult word, requiring time to be read and uttered, just like tradition and good things require time to be made. Suffice it to mention Zidarich’s local cheese and cured meats; mozzarella cheese straight from Salerno, delivered fresh every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday; and Smo’king, the award-winning cheese that was named best herbed cheese of 2022.

You simply must try that…” Local delicacies, directly from the Karst Plateau; a few selected products from afar, like Pietro Massi pasta; and a handful of rarities, such as fine Norway salmon, first selected in Norway and then smoked on Italian wood by a producer from Emilia. LE FESTE IN CITTÀ!

Torna il Natale e tornano ancora più ricche le decorazioni che da anni caratterizzano Trieste: i 24 alberi addobbati a festa faranno da cornice alla suggestiva piazza Unità d’Italia, luogo “cartolina” per antonomasia che non finisce mai di stupire. Tra i pennoni svetta la tradizionale stella cometa che accompagna il Natale triestino da qualche anno assieme alla musica in diffusione –un vasto repertorio dal classico agli evergreen più moderni– che vi farà danzare a occhi chiusi nella piazza sul mare più grande d’Europa.

Lo spirito natalizio si potrà respirare in molti angoli del centro storico grazie al variegato programma gratuito di proposte musicali messo a punto dall’Amministrazione comunale: con “Magico Natale”, piazza Cavana, via Dante e via Cassa di Risparmio saranno infatti allietate da brevi esibizioni musicali pomeridiane articolate su sei giornate; ulteriori spettacoli dal repertorio classico di letteratura, musica e danza, denominati “Le Vie dell’Arte”, troveranno invece spazio nelle suggestive location di via Trento, piazzetta Cecovini, piazza Hortis e largo Panfili. Intervalli musicali che

Between the flagpoles stands the traditional comet star that has accompanied Trieste’s Christmas for the past few years, as well as background music –a vast repertoire from the classical to the most modern evergreens– that will make you dance with your eyes closed in Europe’s largest seaside square.

In order to always carry Trieste with you, you don’t need a tattoo, but a piece of jewellery that is like a second skin.

The 1:20,000 project by Giulia Savino, the internationally renowned designer who invented the necklace version of body maps dedicated to the most famous cities, has now been enriched by the item dedicated to Trieste.

It will be a special edition to inaugurate these new creations. In fact, on the occasion of ‘Ponterosso Memorie’, a special map was presented that captures the iconic places of the shopping ritual between the 1960s and 1980s, which had its centre in Ponterosso.

“Ponterosso Memorie” is a multiform event conceived by Wendy D’Ercole and Massimiliano Schiozzi that will revolve around the Cavò space in Via San Rocco, where the 1:20,000 project on Trieste

was premiered in November in the presence of Giulia Savino. Performances, visits, readings and meetings continue until January with a rich calendar of appointments.

“Each city has its own charm and the entire collection responds to very contemporary needs such as mobility and flexibility,” says the artist, who explains, “Since the map is not the territory, but only one of the many possible representations of reality, each piece of jewellery is a personal interpretation of the city that takes/ loses shape in the interaction with the body. Giulia Savino characterises her works with a graphic and narrative approach: images and experiences are reworked in a balance of essential shapes and colours, becoming dynamic and light jewellery.

VITZ E GIOCHI DA TAVOLO

Itriestini, è cosa nota, sono goderecci, burloni, a volte dissacranti, campanilisti e attaccatissimi al loro dialetto. È naturale quindi che il dialetto triestino sia componente rilevante nei giochi e nei divertimenti, siano essi tradizionali o di nuova generazione.

Un esempio ne è il gioco Barkolana che offre un modo per rivivere il mare e le emozioni, anche adrenaliniche, della festa del mare che ogni anno si celebra a Trieste e anima la città intera. Per “salpare” e fare un pieno di morbìn (allegria, buon umore) basta aprire la scatola di Barkolana e, seguendo il cliché del gioco dell’oca, cimentarsi con diverse prove teoriche e pratiche, distinte da veri spaccati di triestinità, secondo quanto previsto dalle carte, assicurando competitività e divertimento ad ogni mossa, nel più classico spirito della Barcolana.

Una vera battaglia di tradizioni ed elementi culturali regionali è il gioco Frico. Sul format del noto Risiko, le due fazioni, triestini e furlani – rivali storici -, si contendono con varie battaglie, il dominio del territorio regionale.

Una bella sfida e un’occasione per conoscere divertendosi, i diversi aspetti culturali e linguistici delle due realtà (i

nomi delle carte sono scritti rispettivamente in friulano e triestino).

Le carte sono un passatempo evergreen; ci giocano proprio tutti e dappertutto, soprattutto nelle osmize (locali tipici del Carso,) nei bar, nei circoli o “al bagno” (al mare). Ovviamente i triestini giocano con le “loro” carte, quelle della storica fabbrica Modiano, simili alle trevigiane ma con le figure più stilizzate e hanno sugli assi le diverse diciture rigorosamente in dialetto: “non val saper chi ha fortuna contra” sull’asso di denari, “molte volte le giuocate van finire a bastonate” sull’asso di bastoni, “il giuoco della spada a molti non aggrada” su quello di spade e “una coppa di buon vin fa coraggio fa morbin” di coppe.

Non ci resta che augurarvi buon divertimento nelle uggiose serate invernali in compagnia di amici e famiglia!

Triestini are known to be pleasure-loving, jokers, sometimes slighting, parochial, and fierce advocates of their own dialect. So, obviously, dialect is an integral part of entertainment and games, both traditional and more recent ones.

Take the board game Barkolana, named after Trieste’s annual regatta that celebrates the sea, its life, and the adrenaline of sailing. In order to set sail and enjoy the morbìn (merriment, high spirits), players need only remove the lid, unbox the game, and follow the track, like in the Game of the Goose. Along the way, as each place card is drawn, they will face both theoretical and practical tests – which are also full-fledged slices of Trieste life. Competitive spirit and entertainment await, in a game that captures the true spirit of the Barcolana regatta.

A clash of tradition and regional cultural elements: this is the board game Frico . Based on the format of the Italian version of Risk, the game offers players two factions, Triestini and Furlani (eternal rivals in real life) that fight for dominion over the whole region. A great challenge and an opportunity to learn with fun, as you

discover various cultural and linguistic aspects of each side (cards are written in Triestino and Friulano dialects, respectively).

Card games are evergreen: they are played by virtually everyone everywhere –but most of all at osmize ’s tables, in bars and associations, or al bagno [at the bath]– which, in Trieste, means “at the seaside”. Most Triestini play with their own cards, namely the Triestine deck by historic producer Modiano – suits Triestine are similar to suits Trevigiane, except former face cards are more stylised and their ace cards are captioned in dialect: “ non val saper chi ha fortuna contra” [it is not worth it/fair to know who is unfavoured by luck] on the ace of coins; “molte volte le giuocate van finire a bastonate ” [oftentimes games end up in a fight] on the ace of batons; “ il giuoco della spada a molti non aggrada ” [not many like a game of swords] on the ace of swords; and “ una coppa di buon vin fa coraggio fa morbin ” [a cup of good wine makes you braver makes everything fine] on the ace of cups.

Benedetta Moro, triestina, vive a Milano, dove lavora per il “Corriere della Sera”, principalmente per l’inserto “Cook” e le pagine delle Cronache. Prima è stata impegnata per anni come giornalista a Trieste, collaboratrice, tra gli altri, per il quotidiano “Il Piccolo” e per l’agenzia Ansa. Ha studiato “Lingue e letterature moderne” a Venezia e, per approfondire di più le conoscenze in tema di politica estera, anche Scienze internazionali e diplomatiche” a Gorizia.

Caffè San Marco [1] (via Battisti, 18). Mi ricorda gli anni della scuola superiore, quando mi fermavo lì a studiare, nei pomeriggi, mentre in tempi recenti ci passo soprattutto per chiacchierare con i titolari, Eugenia e Alexandros, che hanno sempre spunti interessanti, a livello locale e nazionale.

I moli cittadini. Adoro fermarmi in particolare sul molo IV [2] al tramonto, per osservare i pescatori amatoriali e la luce che in quel momento si riflette sul mare e sulla città. Mi rilassa e allo stesso tempo regala una carica di energia rigenerante.

Libreria Ubik [3] (piazza della Borsa, 15). I titolari sono sempre molto gentili, è centrale ed è all’interno di una splendida galleria storica, il Tergesteo. Una libreria affascinante, anche se un po’ nascosta, ma indubbiamente molto conosciuta.

La città celeste di Diego Marani. Un libro che ho letto appena mi sono trasferita a Milano. Mi ha fatto sentire subito meno lontana da Trieste, in più descrive la città in periodi che io non ho vissuto ed è stato molto interessante scoprire tante curiosità che non conoscevo.

She studied ‘Modern Languages and Literature’ in Venice and, to deepen her knowledge of foreign policy, ‘International and Diplomatic Sciences’ in Gorizia.

Café San Marco [1] (Via Battisti, 18). It reminds me of my high school years, when I used to stop there to study, in the afternoons, while in recent times I mostly go there to chat with the owners, Eugenia and Alexandros, who always have interesting ideas, both at local and national level.

The city piers. I especially love to stop at Pier IV [2], at sunset, to watch the amateur fishermen and the light reflecting off the sea and the city at that moment. It relaxes me and at the same time gives me a rejuvenating energy boost.

Libreria Ubik [3], (piazza della Borsa, 15). The owners are always very friendly, it is central and inside a splendid historical gallery, the Tergesteo. A fascinating bookshop, even if a little hidden, but undoubtedly very well known.

It immediately made me feel less distant from Trieste, plus it describes the city in periods that I did not experience and it was very interesting to discover many interesting facts that I did not know’.

Massimiliano Alberti, triestino, vive da anni a Vienna per lavoro.

Con Infinito Edizioni ha pubblicato “L’invitato” (2018), vincitore del premio letterario Città di Napoli, “La Piccola Parigi (2020)”, un long seller che si è guadagnato un riconoscimento d’onore allo Switzerland Literary Prize e al premio letterario città di Milano. È stato anche finalista al premio internazionale del libro e ha conquistato l’XI Premio Letterario Internazionale Montefiore (RN) sez. Logos Cultura. È in uscita il suo terzo volume.

Un posto dove il tempo sembra essersi fermato ai primi anni del ‘900.

Non solo un locale, ma anche un luogo che mi dà tanta energia, in particolare la vista, che è spettacolare.

Ci vado una o due volte all’anno. E per me è un posto magico.

Biblioteca Statale Stelio Crise di Trieste [6] (Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII, 6). Ogni libreria ha un suo libraio. E ogni libraio è un artista a modo suo nel consigliare le letture. Ma in questo contesto voglio citare invece una biblioteca, quella di Largo Papa Giovanni, che frequento fin dai tempi dell’Università.

Un luogo dove posso leggere e scrivere in silenzio.

La coscienza di Zeno di Italo Svevo Ci sono tanti libri splendidi scritti su Trieste, da tanti autori eccellenti. Voglio ricordare “La coscienza di Zeno” perché ricordo come, pagina dopo pagina, mi sia mi sia piaciuta subito la schiettezza dello scrittore.

Stelio Crise State Library in Trieste [6] (Largo Papa Giovanni XXIII, 6). Every bookshop has its own bookseller. And every bookseller is an artist in his own way when it comes to recommending readings.

But in this context I would like to mention a library, the one in Largo Papa Giovanni, that I have been visiting since my university days.

A place where I can read and write in silence.

Zeno’s Conscience by Italo Svevo There are so many wonderful books written about Trieste, by so many excellent authors. I want to remember ‘La coscienza di Zeno’ because I remember how, page after page, I immediately liked the writer’s directness.

UN MERCATO MULTILINGUA

Mentre alcune questioni internazionali come la crisi energetica e l’inflazione impensieriscono l’opinione pubblica, il mercato immobiliare è in costante crescita, anche a Trieste.

“La nostra città sta acquisendo un carattere sempre più internazionale, e non più solo mitteleuropeo –osserva Alessandro Arjno, responsabile di Laboratorio Immobiliare, agenzia di Trieste che offre un servizio post vendita curato e attento, per fornire un prodotto completo che non si esaurisca con l’acquisizione dell’immobile–. Se anni fa i principali acquirenti provenivano dai paesi confinanti, o prevalentemente dall’area tedesca, oggi sentiamo parlare anche in altre lingue”.

“Per quanto riguarda le previsioni per il 2023 sono ottimista, basti pensare che attualmente a Trieste le richieste continuano a superare l’offerta. Dobbiamo però attendere le manovre finanziarie del nostro governo per avere una visione più chiara del mercato”.

As far as forecasts for 2023 are concerned, I am optimistic, just think that currently in Trieste demand continues to exceed supply. However, we have to wait for the financial manoeuvres of our government to have a clearer view of the market”.

Aveva cinquant’anni Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen quando (come spesso accaduto, per caso) scopriva i raggi X, nel lontano 1895. E meno di dieci anni dopo, nella Trieste austriaca di quel tempo, Massimiliano Gortan fondava l’Istituto di Radiologia presso l’Ospedale Maggiore. Una ventina d’anni più tardi ecco aperto uno studio radiologico fuori dall’ospedale cittadino, prima affidato al figlio Giorgio e quindi a Giuliano Gortan, che morirà proprio sul posto di lavoro nel 1974.

A prendere le redini del già avviatissimo studio ecco arrivare il prof. Ludovico Dalla Palma, luminare della radiologia italiana, ben presto affiancato da uno dei suoi allievi prediletti che già nel 1993 entra in società con metà delle quote per poi rilevare l’intero studio il primo gennaio del 2000. Al pari del dottor Gortan, questo giovanotto nato nel 1953 ad Oderzo, è un tipo che va di fretta ed è oggi a capo di una vera e propria eccellenza della sanità triestina. Si chiama Giovanni Battista Bellis, ma per tutti (colleghi, amici e pure clienti…) è semplicemente “Tita”.

Nella sede di via Beccaria, in pieno centro a Trieste, lavorano oggi una

same di medici qualificati. “Perché il valore aggiunto –precisa Bellis– resta sempre il fattore umano, per noi che dobbiamo rapportarci con pazienti che chiedono la più corretta delle interpretazioni sui risultati forniti dalle macchine. Ecco allora che la differenza la fanno i più qualificati specialisti del settore che ho voluto in questo team”.

Lo studio Gortan è un’istituzione storica in città, tra i primissimi istituti radiologici italiani. “Non è un caso se abbiamo voluto tenere la stessa denominazione dal 1925 ad oggi. Un omaggio, se volete, ad un luminare come Massimiliano Gortan, che ricorderemo tra poco, quando festeggeremo i 100 di questo studio”. Che il suo direttore sanitario non smette di migliorare anno dopo anno al servizio di un’utenza che semplicemente a Trieste non dice vado a farmi i raggi, bensì… “vado da Gortan a farmi le lastre”.

Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen was 50 years old in 1895, when he (almost accidentally) discovered electromagnetic radiation in what we now know as the X-ray range.

Less than a decade later Massimiliano Gortan founded the Institute of Radiology of Ospedale Maggiore in the (then) Austrian city of Trieste. Twenty years after that, the first private Istituto Radiologico [Radiology Institute] opened in town, first led by Gortan’s son Giorgio, and then Giuliano Gortan, who lost his life in 1974 in an accident at the institute.

The Istituto was then taken over by Italian researcher and physician Prof. Ludovico Dalla Palma, one of Italy’s leading scholars in the field of radiology. In 1993 one of his most promising pupils, Giovanni Battista Bellis, bought half of the shares of the Istituto, and acquired sole ownership in January 2000. Born in Oderzo (province of Treviso) in 1953, Giovanni Battista Bellis hit the ground running, just like his predecessor Dr Gortan. Today he is at the head of one of the flagships of Trieste’s healthcare sector. Despite his impressive career, he is known among his colleagues, friends, and even patients simply as “Tita”.

Istituto Radiologico Gortan is located in Via Beccaria, right in the city’s centre, and has now a staff of twenty employees: five radiologists , one neurologist, one intern, two anaesthesiologists, three radiology technicians, and the rest of the administrative personnel. “A great team – according to Dr Tita Bellis – fully committed to our mission: quality at any cost”!

L’agriturismo

è uno scrigno di storie, a cominciare dai nomi stessi delle stanze che evocano luoghi o elementi caratterizzanti la vita del paese.

Juna holiday farm is a shrine of tales, starti ng from the name of each room, which evokes places and elements of country life.

Scegliere il nome non è mai una decisione facile. Se nel nome, come dicevano gli antichi, è racchiuso il destino, allora la responsabilità è doppia. Walter Stanissa e Maddalena Giuffrida, una coppia unita nella vita e nel lavoro, hanno deciso sette anni fa di dare al loro agriturismo sul Carso triestino il nome Juna. Nel dialetto sloveno locale è l’architrave –racconta Walter– ma nel significato primario indica l’energia vitale e il vigore giovanile, quasi a voler trasmettere l’idea di forza, proprio come il nostro Carso.

L’agriturismo è uno scrigno di storie, a cominciare dai nomi stessi delle stanze che evocano luoghi o elementi caratterizzanti la vita del paese. Maddalena

ha persino dedicato una sezione del sito alle “storie di Juna” per raccontare il recupero degli oggetti e degli arredi della casa, a cui è stata data una seconda vita.

Nella visione di Walter e Maddalena, Juna vuole essere non solo la tappa di un viaggio, ma soprattutto un luogo di connessione di esperienze creative tra natura e cultura, dove si possano incrociare persone, parole e storie. E proprio al racconto delle storie sarà dedicato il secondo laboratorio di scrittura in programma nell’agriturismo il 17 e 18 dicembre. A condurre il corso il poeta e editor Sergio Rotino, che nel marzo scorso aveva già iniziato ad esplorare le infinite vie della narrazione nel suo primo workshop di scrittura.

Un altro poeta, Sandro Pecchiari, è

atteso nel 2023 ad Aurisina, dove presenterà la sua ultima silloge, Alle spalle del cose (VAN editrice), ripercorrendo i luoghi delle emozioni. Da Juna il poeta triestino è di casa, perchè durante l’anno ha condotto un interessante viaggio alla scoperta della geografia poetica contemporanea, Geopoesia, il cui ricavato è stato donato all’Associazione Provinciale di Trieste della LILT - Lega Italiana per la lotta contro i Tumori, per contribuire a realizzare il prossimo anno sul territorio dei laboratori legati alla parola benessere.

Si deve anche all’impegno del Club del Libro di Duino se questi viaggi così speciali nel mondo della scrittura narrativa e poetica andranno ad arricchire il calendario delle attività ad Aurisina il prossimo anno. La sua fondatrice, Martina Fullone, è riuscita negli ultimi cinque anni non solo ad attivare un affiatato gruppo di lettura che conta quasi trenta persone, ma anche a promuovere, attraverso corsi e presentazioni, l’amore per i libri e la scrittura. Anche il Club di Martina è stato più volte ospitato da Juna, dove recentemente è stato organizzato dall’associazione Casa C.A.V.E. un incontro di letture condivise sulla parola “cura”. Su questo tema per un pomeriggio si sono intrecciate voci di uomini e donne per riflettere insieme sull’importanza delle parole rispetto, attenzione, convivenza e ascolto.

Choosing a name is never easy − especially if the old saying is true, and a person’s name holds their destiny. Faced with this responsibility seven years ago, Walter Stanissa and Maddalena Giuffrida, a couple at work and in life, chose to name their Karst holiday farm “Juna”. According to Walter, “Juna” is The Slovenian vernacular term for lintel, yet Juna’s original meaning refers to life force and the energy of youth. It conveys an idea of primeval strength, just like our Karst.

Juna holiday farm is a shrine of tales, starting from the name of each room, which evokes places and elements of country life. Maddalena provided Juna’s website with a whole section entirely dedicated to “Juna’s tales”, where she chronicles the upcycling process of items and decor elements.

Walter and Maddalena’s vision is a destination, but also where nature and culture are experienced firsthand in creative ways, and people, lives, and narratives come together. Indeed, narratives are the very core of the second writing workshop that will be hosted at Juna on 17th and 18th December: the workshop will be led by poet and editor Sergio Rotino, who inaugurated

this narrative initiative in March of last year.

In 2023 in Aurisina Trieste-born poet Sandro Pecchiari will present his latest anthology Alle spalle delle cose [lit. At the back of things, N/T], published by VAN Pub. His journey through emotions led him time and time again to Juna, as he was investigating the geography of contemporary poetry, which resulted in his collection Geopoesia – whose retail revenues were donated to Trieste’s chapter of LILT- Lega Italiana per la lotta contro i Tumori [i.e. Italian association for cancer research], as a contribution to next year’s programme of workshops on health and wellbeing.

The exceptionally rich programme of initiatives dedicated to poetry and narrative writing to take place next year in Aurisina owes a large share of its success to Club del Libro di Duino (i.e. Duino Book Club): founder Martina Fullone spent the last five years not only tirelessly promoting her reading club (which has reached an impressive total of almost 30 members), but also fostering the love of reading and writing, through seminars and dedicated workshops. Martina and her Club are regular guests at Juna – most recently to take part in Casa C.A.V.E. Association’s reading event dedicated to the concept of “care”: a whole afternoon of shared experiences and considerations by men and women discussing the meaning of respect, attention, cohabitation, and ability to listen.

Juna vuole essere non solo la tappa di un viaggio, ma soprattutto un luogo di connessione di esperienze creative tra natura e cultura.

Juna is a destination, but also where nature and culture are experienced firsthand in creative ways, and people, lives, and narratives come together.

L’unicità però sta nel borgo in cima al monte Lussari: un luogo da favola dove sostare, assaporando i piatti della cucina tipica nei rifugi godendo di un panorama mozzafiato e passeggiando tra storia e cultura, fino ad arrivare al Santuario risalente al XIV secolo. Tarvisio è anche un ottimo punto di partenza per quanti vogliono godere della montagna senza dipendere dagli impianti di risalita. esigenza e capacità e quasi mai affollati. Come la passeggiata –adatta a tutti– che dal limitare di Camporosso, attraverso la strada forestale porta a Coccau, lambendo nel bosco la parete di roccia per poi aprirsi in un pianoro che, assolato e innevato, è un paradiso per gli occhi; luogo ideale per una merenda e… per giocare nella neve! Sul versante opposto, dal parcheggio dei camper, percorrendo un’ampia strada, si arriva agilmente al Biotopo dello Scichizza e, per i più sportivi, al lago di Fusine superiore. Dopo una bella nevicata scorci e panorami appaiono surreali! Tarvisio si sa è terra di confini che si possono letteralmente toccare, dopo la passeggiata, un po’ impegnativa, che da Poscolle conduce alla sommità del Monte Forno. Qui un cippo segnala il punto di incontro tra Italia, Austria e

Slovenia. Da Aclete invece si raggiungono agilmente la malga di Fusine e il lago superiore. Lungo tutti i percorsi, prestando attenzione, sarà possibile scovare le tracce caprioli, lupi, volpi e… anche orsi!

The uniqueness, however, lies in the hamlet at the top of Mount Lussari: a fairy-tale place to stay, savouring typical dishes in the mountain huts while enjoying a breathtaking panorama and strolling through history and culture, up to the 14th-century Sanctuary. Tarvisio is also an excellent starting point for those who want to enjoy the mountains without depending on the ski lifts. Roman Benet and Nives Meroi, the first couple of mountaineers to have climbed all 14 of the eight-thousanders on Earth, accompany us to explore some of the routes. “Our mountains,” they explain, “are a natural museum, studied throughout Europe, a space to be experienced both in summer and winter. There are many routes, they explain, suitable for every need and ability and almost never crowded. Such as the walk –suitable for everyone– that from the edge of Camporosso, across the forest road leads to Coccau, running along the rock face in the woods and then opening out onto a plateau that, sunny and snow-covered, is a paradise for the eyes; the ideal place for a snack and... to play in the snow! On the opposite side, from the caravan park, a wide road leads easily to the Scichizza

Biotope and, for the more sporty, to the Upper Fusine Lake. After a good snowfall, views and panoramas appear surreal! Tarvisio is known to be a land of borders that can literally be touched, after the somewhat challenging walk from Poscolle to the summit of Monte Forno. Here a boundary stone marks the meeting point between Italy, Austria and Slovenia. From Aclete, on the other hand, it is easy to reach the Fusine malga and the upper lake. Along all the routes, paying attention, it will be possible to spot the tracks of deer, wolves, foxes and... even bears!

“Sono il prodotto della cultura di questo luogo, che mi è stata trasmessa attraverso i miei genitori, entrambi tarvisiani“, racconta Giulia Terlicher, nata e cresciuta tra le Alpi e le Prealpi Giulie, nell’immensità della Foresta di Tarvisio, dove si incontrano la cultura latina, slava e germanica.

Giulia si occupa di pedagogia del bosco e di turismo esperienziale, proponendosi come guida, per bambini e adulti, e offrendo momenti immersivi nella natura, attraverso il forest bathing (letteralmente “bagno di foresta”) e la outdoor education (educazione all’aria aperta).

“I am a child of this place and its culture, passed on to me by my parents, who were both born in Tarvisio“. Like her parents, Giulia Terlicher was born and raised here, surrounded by the huge Forest of Tarvisio, embraced by the Julian Alps and Pre-Alps, at the crossroad of Ancient Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures.

Giulia specialises in forest education and experiential tourism, working as a guide for both children and adults, to lead them through immersive nature hikes, forest bathing experiences, and outdoor education.

Le parole sono un ponte” si dice, uniscono persone, culture, tradizioni anche nelle situazioni più estreme, come le guerre. Lo testimoniano i diversi percorsi in panorami mozzafiato dedicati alla Grande Guerra visitabili nel Tarvisiano. Sulle montagne che hanno visto affrontarsi i due eserciti –italiano e austro-ungarico–, in un conflitto tra i più sanguinosi, si possono leggere ma soprattutto vivere le emozioni espresse da tante diverse parole. In Val Saisera, seguendo le indicazioni del “Val Saisera Wild Track” si raggiungono diverse postazioni belliche. Ai piedi del “Fortino degli Amici”, lungo un idilliaco sentiero vicino alla sorgente Sabuata, alcuni alberi portano le testimonianze di chi ha vissuto in modo ben diverso il rapporto con la natura circostante. Proseguendo lungo il percorso, superata la postazione “Villa Anna” nel silenzio del bosco, verso gli abeti di risonanza si giunge ad un grande masso al quale è appesa una chitarra; poco distante è narrata una storia toccante, fatta di note, parole e suoni, quella del tedesco Hainich e del suo “nemico” Beppo. Due militari che, protetti dal buio della notte da una trincea all’altra, si scoprono uomini e si raccontano le loro storie malgrado le divise diverse, diventando quasi amici. Tanto che un giorno, Beppo pieno di orgoglio grida all’”avversario” “attenzione Eirik, Caruso” e dalle note di un grammofono una musica riempie quel tratto di valle: una canzone di Enrico Caruso.”

“Mi sono resa conto di quanto la nostra foresta sia potente e di come la natura, vissuta come palestra e scuola, abbia fatto la differenza nella mia educazione e sulla mia formazione. Ricordo la libertà di essere me stessa nel bosco, assieme agli altri bambini“.

Il progetto di Giulia si esprime anche in “NaTURa” (Booksprint edizioni), un libro “di evoluzione, che porterà il lettore a guardare la natura con occhi diversi, quelli del cuore, e a vivere se stesso attraverso di essa“.

“I have realised that our forest is powerful and that nature, my school and training ground, has had a key role in my education and my job. Most of all, I remember that I could be myself, there in the forest, with all the other children“.

Giulia illustrates her project in her book “NaTURa” (published by Booksprint), an itinerary “of evolution that walks the reader through every page, until they are able to see nature with the eyes of their heart, and meet their true selves through nature “.

This is testified by the various routes in breathtaking landscapes dedicated to the Great War that can be visited in the Tarvisio area. On the mountains where the two armies –Italian and Austro-Hungarian– faced each other in one of the bloodiest conflicts, you can read but above all experience the emotions expressed by so many different words. In Val Saisera, following the signs of the ‘Val Saisera Wild Track’ you reach several war posts. At the foot of the ‘Fortino degli Amici’, along an idyllic path near the Sabuata spring, several trees bear witness to those who experienced their relationship with nature in a very different way. Continuing along the path, past ‘Villa Anna’ post in the silence of the forest, towards the resonance firs, one reaches a large boulder on which a guitar hangs; not far away a touching story is told, made up of notes, words and sounds, that of the German Hainich and his ‘enemy’ Beppo. Two soldiers who, protected by the darkness of the night from one trench to another, discover each other as men and tell their stories despite their different uniforms, becoming almost friends. So much so that one day, Beppo, full of pride, shouts to his “adversary” “watch out Eirik, Caruso” and from the notes of a gramophone, music fills that stretch of valley: a song by Enrico Caruso.”

Pietro Nicolaucich, illustratore e scrittore tarvisiano, è cresciuto professionalmente a Milano ma, da qualche tempo, è tornato a vivere nei suoi luoghi d'origine. Qui, durante le quotidiane passeggiate e corse tra le montagne, trae tutta l'ispirazione per trasformare i suoi pensieri in romanzi, racconti e poesie.

A ottobre scorso è uscito "A casa tutto solo" (Salani), un albo illustrato per bambini che racconta la storia del piccolo Jacopo e del suo fido cane Cousteau. I due si trovano a casa da soli e vengono attratti da uno strano rumore proveniente dalla cantina.

Raggiungono quel misterioso richiamo e ad aspettarli troveranno una botola magica, passaggio segreto verso un mondo fantastico.

“C'è tutta la mia infanzia dentro questo libro, le cose che mi piacevano e ancora mi piacciono. L'ho scritto pensando a cosa mi sarebbe piaciuto leggere da bambino“, osserva Nicolaucich che è nato a Gemona del Friuli nel 1984 e di recente ha vinto la XX edizione del Premio Fabrizio De André per la poesia. Insomma, aggirandosi per le foreste tarvisiane, è possibile incontrarlo lì, sperduto tra i boschi di Malborghetto e Tarvisio, in cerca delle storie che ancora dormono nascoste. [EM]

Pietro Nicolaucich is a Tarvisioborn illustrator and writer, who started off in Milan, and then recently moved back to his birthplace. Now, during his morning jogs or meditative hikes, surrounded by the embrace of the mountains, he finds inspiration to turn his thoughts into novels, short stories, and poems.

His most recent publication is “A casa tutto solo [At home all alone]” (Salani), an illustrated children’s book, which tells the tale of young Jacopo and his trusted dog Cousteau. One day they find themselves home alone and hear a noise coming from the cellar. Following this mysterious call, they find a magic hatch, which opens a secret passage to a fantastic world.

“I put my entire childhood in this book, all the things I used to like – and still love today. I wrote it while imagining what I would have liked to read as a kid“, Nicolaucich explains. Born in 1984 in Gemona del Friuli, he recently won the 20th edition of Fabrizio De André award for poetry.

You may cross his path, walking through the woods that stretch between Malborghetto and Tarvisio –he may seem lost, but he is actually looking for the stories that are still asleep, hidden in the trees. [EM]

Carnival 2023

From Muggia to Trieste, passing through the Karst: the traditional Carnival parades characterise the seaside village, the city and the plateau. Usually the appointment for the Kraški Pust is on Shrove Saturday, while in Muggia the carnival parade on Sunday; the celebrations conclude with the parade on Shrove Tuesday - February 21st - in Trieste. After the forced pause due to the pandemic, we hope to be able to admire the fantastic creations again!
