Our students and faculty travel to the far north, plunge into oceans and rivers, delve into forests, and explore the policies shaping our society. THE CANADIAN RIVERS INSTITUTE (CRI) is a national centre of excellence in water research with stateof-the-art research and teaching facilities. The CRI was recently commissioned by NB Power to conduct a multidisciplinary aquatic ecosystem study that will help determine the future of the Mactaquac Hydroelectric Generating Station on the Saint John River. It is currently the biggest dam renewal project in the world. A component of this project is PhD candidate AMANDA BABIN’S research, which is on Atlantic salmon’s ability to navigate the headpond by tagging and tracking their movements. IBM CENTRE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES (CAS Atlantic) is an IBM research-based institution that is working
in collaboration with the long-established UNB Computer Science Faculty. PhD student, KONSTANTIN
NASARTSCHUK, is working on a team to help accelerate Java by using massive multicore systems
to make ‘big data’ workloads run faster and more efficiently than ever before. IBM has also chosen UNB as one of 8 universities in North America to help adapt its Watson cognitive technology for use in cyber security.
UNB GRADUATE STUDENTS CONDUCT RESEARCH TO COMBAT INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND CANCER. PHD CANDIDATES TREVOR CL ARK, ALLYSON BOS, AND ANDREW FLEWELLING.
THE NATURAL PRODUCTS RESEARCH GROUP examines plants and their associated endophytic fungi to discover new bioactive molecules. These molecules are used to produce new therapeutics. Graduate students ALLYSON BOS, TREVOR CLARK and ANDREW FLEWELLING are identifying plant extracts and compounds that will combat both infectious diseases and cancer. This is just one example of many ongoing research projects led by Dr. Chris Gray and Dr. John Johnson. JIANHUI ZHOU is completing his PhD study in the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management under the supervision of Dr. Ying Hei Chui. His research topic aims to develop a non-destructive method for evaluating the mechanical properties of wood-based panels like cross-laminated timber. Zhou is also a recipient of the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship of $50,000 for up to three years. REBECCA SALAZAR is a PhD candidate in the department of English and a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar. In addition to her research on literature and feminist ecocriticism, she is a published writer and an editor of The Fiddlehead and QWERTY Magazine. Her first poetry chapbook is forthcoming from Anstruther Press. ALMA LOPEZ (PhD IDST student) just received a prestigious national scholarship from her native Mexico. Alma is studying the psychometric properties of a Canadian standardized test translated into Spanish for kindergarten students in Spanish-speaking countries. Another PhD IDST student, MILAD PIRAYEGAR is a researcher with our Urban & Community Studies Institute. Milad is working on several projects with the institute. His interests include sustainability, spatial analysis, GIS, the economy of cities, transportation, land-use planning and modeling. Milad has received the NBIF Scholarship, as well as 3 years of SSHRC funding.
IDST STUDENTS ARE SUPPORTED BY 75+ FACULTY MEMBERS ACROSS ALL MAJOR DISCIPLINES. PHD CANDIDATE ALMA LOPEZ.
