You’ll find plenty of opportunities to take to the open sea on the Yorkshire Coast, in speedboats and historic pleasure cruisers that served at Dunkirk, on fishing boats for deepsea angling or specialist nature daytrippers to see seals and whales. And if you don’t have the sea legs, you can still get up close and personal with the inhabitants of the deep with a bit of rock-pooling or crabbing, all safely on dry land.

on your bike
It’s officially one of the best forms of exercise, and you don’t need a lot of complicated equipment to do it. Serious hiker, rambler who enjoys time to stop and stare, or just want a gentle stroll in gorgeous surroundings? This region offers a huge diversity of options, from a clifftop path with spectacular sea views to forest trails and moorland hikes.
Over the last few years, Yorkshire has really taken cycling to its heart. In 2014, the county was the venue for the Grand Départ of the Tour de France, an event described by its French director as the ‘grandest’ in the race’s 111-year-old history. Subsequently, and now one of the UK’s biggest races, the UCI-approved Tour de Yorkshire has become a national favourite and generates interest worldwide.
The North York Moors National Park offers guided walks, some of them themed, and an annual walking festival (there’s another in Rosedale). There’s a variety of national routes crossing the area, including the new England Coast Path, part of the world’s longest managed and waymarked coastal path, and the Cleveland Way National Trail. Dalby Forest offers woodland walking trails for all abilities. And, of course, Alfred Wainwright, possibly the most famous walker of them all, chose to end his Coast to Coast Walk at Robin Hood’s Bay, where weary participants traditionally dip their booted feet in the North Sea.
But you don’t have to be Bradley Wiggins to enjoy cycling in North Yorkshire. There are road and off-road routes to suit all abilities right across the area, with dozens of cycle-friendly B&Bs and hotels, cycle hire options, cycling shops and guided tours.

It seems like a romantic dream of perfect freedom – galloping along a wide open beach with the wind in your hair. Not necessarily a dream: some of our most beautiful beaches welcome horses and their riders. For more gentle horseback adventures, the North York Moors National Park has over 800km of bridleways to choose from, including woodlands, disused railway tracks, bridleways and peaceful country lanes. They recommend downloadable day rides devised by Ride Yorkshire. The Forestry Commission also has an extensive network of riding tracks in glorious woodland at Dalby, Cropton, Harwood Dale, Broxa and Langdale.

I was born and bred in Whitby and I lived along the Esk Valley. I started my culinary education at the former Scarborough Technical Catering College, which stood me in good stead to work in France, then came back to cook the fantastic ‘fruits’ of the North Sea! It’s always a pleasure to work with such brilliant local produce at our Michelinstarred number 1 gastropub The Star Inn at Harome, and other restaurants, including our new place in Whitby.

cheers! There’s nothing nicer after a busy day’s sightseeing – or even sitting on a beach – than a drink or two with friends and family. We make some great beers and spirits in this area – try the former from the Bay Town Brewery in Robin Hood’s Bay, the Scarborough Brewery, or the Great Yorkshire Brewery at Cropton; and if gin’s your thing, try our hedgerow version – sloe gin from Sloemotion in Malton.
Everyone loves a good food festival, and there’s no shortage around here. Malton has established itself as the county’s food capital – its annual spring Food Lover’s Festival attracts top names from the culinary world, as does its autumn Harvest Festival, which focuses on game and seafood. There are excellent regular food festivals in Filey, while Scarborough’s annual Seafest in July features demonstrations from the area’s top chefs, and a brand new food and drink festival will be held on the town’s seafront in May 2018. When I moved from London to Scarborough two years ago, I knew that this part of the country had a rich cultural life: but I had no idea just how rich it was. Up and down this glorious coastline and inland across the beautiful North York Moors National Park, there’s a huge amount of wonderful work going on – art, music, filmmaking, photography – and a wide and exciting range of festivals and events to celebrate them. And it goes without saying, of course, that the area offers some of the very best in world theatre!
If you enjoy a breath of fresh air with your music, try Scarborough's spectacular Open Air Theatre which attracts some of the biggest names in music, including, in 2018, Steps, Gary Barlow, Alfie Boe and more, or for classical fans, the glorious Sun Court at Scarborough’s Spa. Whitby’s Pavilion hosts regular musical events including the UK’s biggest indoor annual world music festival, Musicport, each autumn. There’s a vibrant live music scene around the many pubs and clubs in the area. And, of course, there are festivals galore – see pages 40 & 41 for more.

Where to start in Whitby? If you like history, you’ll be spoiled for choice. A museum dedicated to one of the world’s most famous explorers, or a picturesque abbey? The jet works, or the harbour? Those fascinating winding streets, known locally as ‘ghauts’, with their hidden yards – how can you resist a wander into Arguments Yard? Literature fans will enjoy following in the footsteps of Count Dracula – his creator, Bram Stoker, was famously inspired by the town. Don’t be put off by those 199 steps! And visit in spring or autumn, and you might bump into a Goth or two at the town’s famous twice-yearly Goth Weekend.

Whitby is perfect for families, too, with a Blue Flag beach edged by colourful beach huts. the smugglers’ cove In the 18th century, Robin Hood’s Bay was reputedly the most active smuggling community on the Yorkshire Coast, and it was often a real family business. It was said that contraband could pass from the slipway at the bottom of that steep hill to the top of that tangled maze of streets without once seeing open air, due to a network of underground passages linking the houses.

One of the world’s most famous explorers, Captain Cook was born near Middlesbrough in 1728 but fell in love with the sea when he was a young draper’s apprentice in Staithes and later a trainee with a Whitby shipping firm. Find out more about him and his groundbreaking journeys at the Captain Cook and Staithes Heritage Centre and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum on picturesque Grape Lane in Whitby, or visit his statue which surveys the town from the West Cliff. And 2018 marks the 250th anniversary of the great man’s first expedition to the South Seas. the eternal triangle Scarborough and Filey sit at the very top of the Yorkshire Nature Triangle, one of the UK’s best-kept nature secrets, offering opportunities which can’t be had anywhere else in the country, including, at Bempton, both the largest mainland colony of gannets and the most easily viewable mainland colony of delightful puffins. The area also has the most northerly chalk downland streams and internationally important wetlands.

And right next to the beach you'll find the brilliant Scarborough Sea Life Sanctuary, where you can meet turtles, sharks, seahorses and much more. A day out in Dalby, the Great Yorkshire Forest, offers fun for the smallest members of the family, with a Gruffalo Spotters Trail, and both the forest and the magnificent North York Moors National Park have plenty of playgrounds, picnic areas and bike trails for all ages and abilities.

The open air Ryedale Folk Museum, at Hutton-le-Hole in the North York Moors National Park, provides a unique glimpse into a rural past, while Malton’s Eden Camp Museum will transport you back to the World Wars of the 20th century.
Scarborough’s important Rotunda Museum is famous worldwide as one of the world’s first purpose-built museums, and focuses on geology – and dinosaurs! Scampston Hall and Castle Howard have fabulous and lavish interiors and stunning gardens to enchant all the family. And what child (or grown-up, for that matter) doesn’t love a ruin? English Heritage runs both Scarborough Castle and Whitby Abbey, with regular themed family events taking place at both.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a heritage track running 24 miles from Pickering to Whitby, with coaches hauled by historic locomotives both steam and diesel. Scarborough’s North Bay Railway is one of the UK’s most historic seaside miniature railways, and has been in operation since 1931. Try an exhilarating speedboat trip around Scarborough’s seas, or polish up your pirate act on board the Hispaniola, a scale replica of an 18th century schooner.

The festivals season starts early with some steam-powered fun in Whitby – the town’s Steampunk Weekend, based at the Pavilion, brings music, films, storytelling and more, all with a distinctive dash of Victoriana.

The annual Tour de Yorkshire cycle race takes place across the county, and in 2018, Scarborough is one of the eight host towns. There’s also a fantastic new food festival planned.

Scarborough’s Armed Forces Day is one
2018 is the 250th anniversary of Captain Cook’s first exploratory voyage aboard the Endeavour. It’ll be marked in Whitby by a weekend of celebration for the whole family. Scarborough also celebrates its maritime heritage with Seafest – a weekend of food, art, music, street theatre, and more. The annual festival in Filey, the Return of the Dragon, is named for Filey Brigg, which, legend has it, is the bones of a dragon.

Enjoy the world-famous Scarborough Cricket Festival; Whitby Regatta, a weekend of aquatic competition and entertainment, now in its 177th year; Whitby Folk Week, a seven-day Scarborough Seafest ●
Scarborough’s award-winning Jazz Festival sees the Spa swinging; the town glitters with Goldwings, as hundreds of riders take to the seafront in the annual charity fundraising Light Parade; and tee off for Scarborough Golf Week. The much-loved Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage transforms the picturesque village into one huge gallery.

Whitby becomes a baroque paradise when Goths from all over the world descend on the town to display their finery; and the town also welcomes top name musicians from around the globe to the hugely popular world music festival, Musicport.
November
This year, of course, marks the centenary of the end of World War I, and there will be events up and down the coast throughout the month in remembrance.
December
Join in the revelry as Robin Hood’s Bay celebrates Christmas with a unique Victorian Weekend, including the Baytown Beer Festival.

Northern Rail, Cross Country, Virgin Trains East Coast, Grand Central and Transpennine Express run services from all parts of the country GOOLE to York and Leeds where connections can be made to stations within the area including Scarborough, Seamer, Malton, Filey and Thirsk. The Esk Valley route to Whitby operates from Middlesbrough, whilst the Yorkshire Wolds Coast Line runs from Hull to Filey and Scarborough as well as several other local stations in the area.

The A1 connects to the coastal area via the A64 at York and the A170 at Thirsk. The A165 runs from Hull to Scarborough. Whitby can be accessed from Scarborough via the A171 and a motorway connection can be made just north of Middlesbrough.

National Express coach routes stop at Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Thirsk and York with onward connections to local destinations (www.nationalexpress.com).
