4 - Pinta Miami 2017

Pinta Miami 2017

BY DIEGO COSTA PEUSER

Director

In this edition, Pinta Miami / Crossing Cultures continues to position itself as the art fair most representative of Miami—the epicenter of Latin American art in dialogue with art from the Americas as a whole. Last year’s edition, which was visited by some thirty thousand people, solidified the fair’s status as must-see on the Latin American art scene. This year, we further our commitment to communicating topquality Hispanic-American art both at the fair as a whole and in its curated sections featuring solo and duo projects. The particular focus of this edition is reflection on borders and how to interrelate and cross Latino art and American art. Pinta Miami subscribes to a vision that goes from the local to the global; its commitment to the internationalization of art from the featured countries has never been stronger. Pinta has allocated space to curatorial projects that, with the support from the region’s governments, provide emerging artists with a platform for international visibility. For creations from different countries, the fair thus acts as a territory of connections and networks in an international context. In the 2017 edition, Peru and Argentina are the countries featured in the special sections. As in past editions, this time we pay tribute to an artist. This year’s choice is Nela Arias Misson, a Cuban-born artist who, despite close work with avant-gardes in the Old and New Worlds over her almost century-long lifetime, is still largely unknown. I would like to thank EFG, the fair’s main sponsor, for its commitment to Latin American art. Each year, the international prestige of the EFG Award grows. I would like to thank as well companies like Related Group, LATAM, Promperú, Mercantil Bank and their collection, JW Marriott, RC Law Group and ArtNexus.com that help make Pinta Miami the most important Ibero-American art fair held in the United States.

President EFG Capital International Corp

For the fourth consecutive year, EFG reaffirms its commitment to the arts by acting as the main sponsor of Pinta Miami/Crossing Cultures 2017, an art fair focused on modern and contemporary art from Latin America. EFG believes that its support of the region’s modern and contemporary art is at its core, as an institution. Coupled with our entrepreneurial spirit, we endeavor to propel Latin American artists and fairs globally. Importantly, this is also the seventh edition of the EFG Latin American Art Award. Organized in conjunction with ArtNexus, this acquisition prize recognizes the work of emerging artists. As a regional initiative, this prize—like other art related projects EFG has developed internationally—echoes its commitment to Latin America, to its culture and people. Pinta Miami has improved significantly with each edition, drawing knowledgeable and genuinely interested patrons. It is now a must-visit fair in Miami for anyone who wants to discover or to learn more about the modern Latin American art tradition and the region’s contemporary creations by well-established and emerging artists. EFG is proud to participate in Miami Art Week, and we enthusiastically invite you to the eleventh edition of Pinta Miami/Crossing Cultures in Mana Wynwood. We promise it will be a unique and enriching cultural experience.

Pinta Solo Duo Project

Dan Cameron and Jesus Fuenmayor will curate the 2017 Pinta Projects edition. They are proposing a dialogue between Latino and Latin American artists. It is a question of confronting the truths and fictions that exist in the widespread use of these geopolitical categories with the work of artists, regardless of their place of residence, generational belonging, gender or nationality.

What the curators are expecting is that the artists’ works show their different ways of dealing with their contexts and their cultural backgrounds. In this way they will bring a discussion about the pertinence or not of the application of these categories to differentiate their works.

Argentine Section Contrary to what happened for years with modern art, today there is no computer story or an evolutionary framework of successive “isms where to inscribe contemporary artistic practices. This phenomenon - which actually began to manifest itself clearly in the 1960s - brought greater freedom for artists, who significantly expanded their repertoire of resources, materials and work strategies, but in turn, generated a territory of less action Regulated, and therefore more disconcerting for the public, who is often skeptical about not finding an easy way to access current artistic production. Nevertheless, contemporary art continues to be one of the most interesting vehicles to approach our own time, to better understand the time in which we live, think and feel. Approaching its communicative density by making use of the sensibility and the intellect is a challenge that is well worth taking to pass a unique experience, difficult to achieve through other contemporary practices. As a curator of the contemporary Argentine art section for PINTA Miami, I am interested in emphasizing that the influence that the market undoubtedly exerts on artistic production does not prevent conceptual and formally powerful works, works that manage to move and operate our intelligence to propitiate An experience against which we can not remain indifferent. Peruvian Section

The Peruvian section for the Countries Project in Pinta Miami brings together five galleries operating in Lima, among new, established and international spaces, with a view to giving an account of the new artistic scene that is taking shape in the country. Their diversity and vitality can be seen in a series of projects by a group of young artists, along with some of the greatest artists, who recode multiple references to the local (from the historical to the present) from contemporary art.

El camarín / Myopía Myopía is a hybrid between an bilingual digital magazine and an interdisciplinary collective. Founded by Anais Lalombriz last October, www.myopia.media, its events and interactive installations seek to narrow the gap between the interests and professions of young people in the region. How? Through storytelling. El Camarín Historically, art presupposes a sense of intimacy. “Art is insight,” we often hear. But, it appears the rules have changed. With time it has become increasingly difficult for the viewer to connect with, and/or know the artist behind the work. And thus, the artist is hidden, out of sight, and the apparatus sustains itself through blindness. This also occurs within the groups with whom we frequent these artistic spaces; when we are all together, we appear to be playing the same character on the same stage. The viewer experience has become near standardized, and we have all become quite comfortable playing our roles, becoming temporarily blind to that which makes our experiences unique. At Myopía, we hope to add a dash of intimacy to the experience of not just making art, but also displaying it and appreciating it. By presenting a space that doesn’t set out to impose itself upon the public, but to have a dialogue with it, we seek to experience the festival together. We have named this space “El Camarín”, an interactive installation that operates as time-away, a behindthe-scenes oasis between the social and academic spaces that exist at your traditional festival, gallery, or museum. A space to be an individual. Enter, tell me everything, and please, be yourself.

Exhibiting Artist Henk Stallinga Henk Stallinga (1962) graduated at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1993 and founded his studio that same year. Stallinga frequently uses parts of mass produced ordinary items and industrial processes to built his conceptual multimedia installations and sculptures. A minimalistic visual language, light, sound and movement are recurring elements in them. The concepts behind Stallinga’s works are often based on our awareness of the everyday world around us. This involves concepts like sense of time, sonorous and visual perception and experience of energy in the form of light, heat or movement. The observer is often left surprised or even optically deceived by Stallinga’s works in which every day phenomena are presented in a different context. Studio Stallinga is the organization behind the artist Henk Stallinga. Since 1998, the studio has been run jointly with fellow owner Annemarie Galani.
