Yakshagana is a performing arts school like the opera, as it is more theatrical and has dialouges that take place through the course of the performance. This project aims to design a space that relates to this form of art to promote and formalize the Yakshagana training through a structured manner. Having a space that is solely dedicated to this art form would help grow, promote and give the people space to cultivate themselves as Yakshagana performers and teach it to the next generation.

The semi-open arched corridors allow for the flow between closed and open spaces. It is important for Yakshagana performers to be connected to nature; thus the courtyards and arches help in doing this.

Yakshagana performers perform throughout the night, so to build the stamina of the students, sports facilities are provided to help keep their mind active and also to cultivate fellowship. This art is born in the body, grows in the body, and eventually dies in the body. the most personal of all the arts, then, is Yakshagana, which flows from the very essence of life..

Page 9

Yakshagana has two parts to its performance The Himmela (or the ones who sit at the back) and The Mummela (the ones who perform frontstage). This art form has numerous types of performances where sometimes it is only the himmela that perform and sometimes it is only the mummela that perform. The kinds can also vary with the costume. Thus, to train students in both parts there are classrooms dedicated according to each performer in each part. The music classes (Himmela classes) have a portico that is seen in many of the houses in this region. There are classroom for each- Bhagavada, Chende and Maddale.

INTERIOR DESIGN SEMESTER VII

The objective was to redesign the interiors of a living room. The house is located in Madurai which has a rich cultural heritage. This interior design follows a balance between vernacular and contemporary style. Vernacular style can be very detailed and very colourful and can be more specific to the ornamentation of a space, but with its combination with contemporary style the space could be enhanced to bring in the vibrance of the vernacular style and the simplicity of contemporary style. From the furniture to the colour scheme, everything has significance to the culture of the place. The mustard yellow for the Haldi used in our daily life and the furniture which is simple, having a few indian touches to it.
