Today, We celebrate. Tilda Swinton up above knows we deserve it. Disparate has been going through some serious changes since you last saw us. New year, new format, new production, same awesomeness tho. This issue, we decided to switch things up a bit and get out of our usual minimal, BnW groove. Nothing beats stepping out of your comfort zone for a month or two to re-energize your face and get you ready for a new year. Part of the mixing-up that came with the Celebrate issue is me sitting in the editors chair. Yup, the grumpiest mother-fuck in durban, sitting in the front seat (Oh Rebecca you so cray) on the smiley issue. So, the line up. We’ve got some kick ass artists and models in this issue. We chill with the guys at Lola Malone and kick it with Brandon Celine from BrandOne photography (holy shit his work is awesome). We’ve also got some great work to show off from up and coming designer Nathan Thomas as well as the Brisset Brothers. I dont have to say it but I will anyway. By day, they’re waiters at Yossi’s, maître d’s at a major up market clothing stores, as well as full time students. By night however, they go big in durban’s modelling scene. Working most of the major modelling gigs in durban as well as SA Fashion Week. This dynamic duo have been kicking up a storm. Too pretty to pass up, they’re the faces of the Celebrate Issue. Weird, wacky, alternative, tongue -in-cheek. All these words describe one of durban’s slickest up and coming designers. Nathan Thomas, fresh out of design school is anything but wet behind the ears. His work takes counter culture aesthetic into places and designs that you would never think of seeing it. Gone are the days of pretty pictures. Concept is king for this young lad.

DISPARATE: What is Lola Malone? How’d you guys start up? LM: The shop is entering its second year of being here. The group at the moment has been around for a bout a year. The concept was for it to be an alternative to the normal kind of tattoo shops that you would get where you would on really get biker tattoos done. We wanted a more open and friendly, creative shop. We don’t have a lot of flash on the walls, pretty much everything we do is custom made, so you walk in, you tell us what you want, we will draw it for you, we’ll tattoo it for you. So its pretty much a one off piece for every customer that walks in here. DISPARATE: How have you guys been recieved? Is there a big calling for this kind of stuff in Durban? LM: Yeah We’ve been received much better than I thought we would be. DISPARATE: The type of market and customer you get coming in here? LM: Pretty varied. Young, old, everything. Jono tattoos a lot of servicemen, you know, Navy, Air force, Army that kind of thing. We get everything from guys who are heavily tattooed to guys who have never had a tattoo done in their life.

DISPARATE: And how much influence do you guys have with regard to creative direction? LM: You always try and push it as far as you can. Among the three of us here, we all have very different styles, Nicks got a much more neotraditional style with heavy line work. You can see Doc’s style a mile away, and my style is much more traditional. So a client will come by with an idea and a few pieces of reference, you will draw up something along the same lines but still representing their idea. Guys are slowly starting to warm up to this way. where as before, I mean, me and Nick have Both worked at places where it was more sort of old school shops where the customer comes in with a piece of work, that’s what they want, that’s you give them. DISPARATE: Where did you guys start off? A fine arts back ground? A design back ground?
DISPARATE: Now when most people think of tatoos, they always see it as something thats really sentimental. From the looks of it, what you guys do is the complete opposite. It’s more about the artform and the creative expression. These days is there’s still room for that kind of sentimentality? LM: Every piece has a little bit of that sentiment. Its more about where you were at that time in your life when you got the piece done. It’s a reflection of who you are at that time, what kind of person you were like at that time. You also get the more tattooed guys who seem to be getting stuff more for the fun of it. Even in the shop, a lot of us just get little things done for the fun of it.

LM: We’ve always drawn; Doc and I (NIC) come from a graffiti background. Jono has always been into creative stuff. It’s a case of, getting a tattoo, falling in love with it, starting to create tattoos.

DISPARATE: And what about being disspaointed with it afterwards? LM: I think anybody that’s heavily tattooed has probably got a few regrets. Or rather, your average Joe would probably have regrets over tattooing someone’s name on their skin. But a lot of the heavily tattooed guys laugh at that kind of stuff. Those kind of tattoos that you wish you didn’t get kind of become a joke. We all have some to laugh at. But you definitely get those situations, especially with guys getting their first tattoo, where they’re like, “I should’ve taken your advice and gone with something else.” It’s easier when a piece matters. Like it doesn’t have to represent a massive life changing event or anything. but if it has a little bit of meaning attached to it when you get it. You are never going to outgrow it. You are always going to look back at it as a fond memory.

Disparate recently caught a cup of coffee and had a chat with him. Prepare your self for some amazing photography!

DISPARATE: Okay, lets get straight into this. What made you want to get into photography? BRANDON: Million dollar question hey, I don’t know, there’s something about taking photos that never gets repeated a second time, it’s that once off moment that you will never see again. It’s also the reaction that I get from people who see the pictures I take, it makes me stoked about taking more. If you take a photo and people are like, oh my gosh!!, that reaction makes me want to go out there and take another and another. DISPARATE: And have you grown since you started? what was it like when you started out as an events photographer and how have you evolved since then. Has your style changed at all? BRANDON: I think I’d done a complete 180 from when I started out. when I started out, I took a picture of anything and everything I saw, just figure out how things worked, different settings and lighting, shadows highlights, that kind of stuff. Once I got quite a good understanding of how all of that was tied together that’s when I started doing events. playing with lighting at events, in a club, there’s like 6 to 8 different light sources around you and you are controlling your own lighting at the same time so you can get some cool stuff out of that afterwards. I started working with a guy, Brett Florens, a very good wedding photographer. I started assisting him for about a year. He taught me quite a lot about lighting, poses fashion, and specifically, stuff to avoid - like just taking a picture of a girl in a bikini on a beach - . He taught me to move away from that kind of stuff and add your own creativity into shoots. If you have to start styling your own shoots. shoot for yourself, not for the people there. So, get a collective together, find a makeup artist, find a stylist, get her to reference a bunch of images and work around that to create the image that you want.

WHAT ARE THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENTS THAT YOU HAVE SHOT? WHAT ARE THE MEMORABLE PICTURES THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN? The best one is splashy this year! I went there with two kind of styles one being just portraits and a second one, different from how you would usually shoot a club scene. so not up in their faces, but rather, from a good 20 to 30 meters away to get the whole scene.

DISPARATE: So is this strictly something that you do on the side, or would you like to make a career out of photography? BRANDON: If you could make a decent living as a photographer here in Durban...if the work was here, ..yes... but graphic design is my first passion. I love it. DISPARATE: How did you break into the industry? BRANDON: Durban is a tough place to stand on your own two feet. my first club shoot, I didn’t even know what to do. was paid a few hundred bucks to go shoot at a club for 4 hours. Those 4 hours were like, take a photo, oh no that’s wrong, okay take another photo, still wrong, try with a flash.... from there, the guys that I did the shoot for didn’t have any online presence, so I had to find a way to show people the pics, I didn’t want to upload it on to my personal Facebook, so from there, I started Brand One. from there I got a regular gig at the club, and after, things just started snow balling to where I am now. DISPARATE:I’ve got to say, people don’t realize how difficult it gets taking photos at a club. BRANDON: yeah, there’s so many things that can go wrong. and when an international headliner comes down to play here, they are only playing for one hour, which means that you only have one hour to get things right. it’s not like you can tell him to play the song again so you have got to make sure you get it right the first time.

Think of Your Dress Shirt as Your Bulletproof Vest. It’s the first thing you put on and your last line of defense. When you button it up in the morning, you should feel confident, in control, even invincible. All over printed shirts are one of the hottest items trending at the moment. Looking back you would start to think of that closet full of solid coloured shirts...certainly bland if you ask me. With the fashion year of 2014 upon us, a variety of silhouettes, fabrications and tailored options emerge for the modern man. The main focus being on prints, OBVIOUSLY. There’s a definite uptrend in ethnic and cultural prints, these are great updates for the done to death trend of Aztec designs which dominated 2013. Fitting perfectly into festival inspired looks, geo prints are making waves. Good ol’animal prints are back, looking brand spanking new when paired over washed out denim or gradient backrounds.
I guess some people find it hard to wear, but all over prints are quiet easy to work into any wardrobe. Not feeling too confident?... For a subtle approach, ease into the trend with a modest micro patterned shirt, anything from shapes to paisley patterns, keep the scalling of the print small (since you being so conservative) and pair it with some washed out chino’s and loafers. Gaining confidence? Ethnic prints are playful conversationals with some denim clammies or woven joggers or pair of chukkas, a trucker and back pack will set you on high ranks within the 031 hip crowd. All in yet? …. Bold exotic flora to compliment your attitude, and if you lucky you might get a matching bermuda for some print on print action…hell yeah! So basically, from the catwalks to street style - all over printed shirts are definitely the direction the “modern man” is moving.

Playful 80’s and 90’s graffiti influences, along with doodle developements and food / fruit conversationals are looking AMAZing!! Pineapples and banana’s being my personal fav! Our no.1 print dominating the catwalk and high street is exotic flowers and birds. YES, aloha prints are back. These are best in the brightest combinations, anyway anyhow. Leaf prints, palms and ferns all add to the exotic movement, the list is endless.

Cake is one of those fundemental things that just make any situation better. Movies? better with cake.. Conversation...il take mine with cake.. Gym? Only if thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cake at the end. So, lets take a look at some of the best cake in durban. All freshly made and delicious, these are all speciality cakes from cafeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all over Durban.
ST. CLEMENTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S LIME DRIZZLE CAKE If you havent heard of St. Clements then you havent been living in Durban very long. The small nursery/ coffee shop sitting, like a cool drink of water in the heart of busy Musgrave. At first glance I thought this would be a slice of dryness. All crumbly and heavy in the crumb. I couldnt be more mistaken. Moist, tangy and deliciously citrusy. The lime drizzle topping is a welcome change to heavy buttercream.
SOMETHING SPECIAL? HOW ABOUT A SLICE OF CARAMEL CUSTARD CHIFFON CAKE. Sweet mother of pearl. this has got to be one of the most delicious pieces of cake I have eaten. However, I think I’m a bit bias in that this is a regular favorite of mine. You’d think that this is going to be some heavily sweet behemoth. You’re wrong. Light, airy, and subtly flavoured. Available at Something Special, a small shop off Clarence Road. This cake is a popular sell and comes highly recommended.
BEST OUT OF THREE? NAUGHTY 90’S BEE-STING TAKES THE...CAKE. on the corner of windemere road (right by the center) lies on of the most chilled cafe’s in Durban. And baked within it, a cake (yes it counts as cake) so fluffy and moist, that it blew my mind. With its custard center and sticky caramel topping, These Bee-stings have got to be the most satisfying thing to have with a cup of tea of a crisp morning.

The year 2013 took us on an unexpected rollercoaster of memory! Yip, there were ups & there were downs (Grrrr… Sigur Rós) but overall this was the year of musical REVOLUTION! All hail to the artists of eccentricity - James Blake, Kanye West, Chance The Rapper, Daft Punk and the lot for an extraordinary performance…. Viva Revolution Viva! — Even Miley Cyrus broke out of her Disney chains into a wrecking ball of shame…Buttless Twerking & widespread scandal! I mean even Jay-Z rapped lines like, ‘Twerk Miley Miley Twerk’ in his ‘Somewhere in America’ track! Complete Mayhem… those poor Smith kids couldn’t believe their eyes at the VMA’s! Kwakwakwaaaaaa that was hilarious! Anyway, enough said! It’s about that TIME...here are the top ten albums that shaped 2013 >>
1. DAFT PUNK, ‘RANDOM ACCESS MEMORIES’ Unlike our French electro veterans, a 70’s inspired funk LP called, ‘Random Access Memories’ was conceived from their studio. Weird for the inventors of the wheel we all thought, but after 15 years Daft Punk had to pull out their dusty bellbottoms for the fun of it! The robot helmet duo produced cheesy groovy-esque recordings that soon became our favorites in the LP. Composing songs with the Vampire, Pharrell Williams – Can you believe the man is 40?! No way, I am convinced his a bloodsucking freeloader! Nobody Ever Really Dies – NERD! Hmmmm…was that a hint, Mr Williams? Anyway back to RAM and less about the bloody cup of youth…Songs like “Get Lucky” and “Lose Yourself To Dance” just made you shuffle those dirty paws of yours! Fair dues….RAM was an LP well construed! Fav Track: Lose Yourself To Dance
2. KANYE WEST, ‘YEEZUS’ Mmmm… a collection defined as what we now call Futuristic Hip-Hop today! Kanye went one step further going where no Hip-Hop artist had gone before…Kinda like a Neil Armstrong of his era, except he really took that leap for mankind! Kanye takes us into the shadowy crevices of his mind, way deeper than his dark twisted fantasy. This is where s%@# gets real yo! We voyage into his antagonistic sentiments & egocentric transgressions, the type of hostility that gets your heart racing like those horses in that Bound 2 video. Bound 2 being right up there with his most narcissistic tracks ever created, yet still the most delightful in its very nature. Yeezy raps about Blasphemy (‘I Am a God’), Apartheid (‘Blood on The Leaves’) & then…sweet & sour sauce (‘I’m in It’)?! Rapping lyrics like, “I’m a rap-lic priest“. Who says things like that?! Kakakaka Oh Yeezy you’re sooo crazy! Big up Mr West! Fav Track: Hold My Liquor

JAMES BLAKE, ‘OVERGROWN’ Grammy Best New Artist Nominee, James Blake surfaced from the underworld with a consortium of astounding EP’s and singles, using genres like R&B, Pop, Classical, House and subtle drum impressions that have refined a subgenre that can only be described as “Experimental”. His quite the sampler this guy… By experimenting into the aspects of sound he has become one of the most relevant musicians in the industry. Overgrown, his 2nd studio album harvests a more eclectic sway that plays on layers of electronica, Hip-Hop & Soul with a deep-toned undercurrent. Shyorrr… That velvet prone falsetto plunges into these songs like a melancholic apparition; gliding in and out as he pleases… Aaaah James you’ve got pipes Son! Reeling in icons like Wu-Tang legend RZA & OutKast member Big Boi, This baby-faced fellow is a walking mastermind of instrumental manipulation…His a dream! Fav Track: Retrograde
4. WOODKID, ‘THE GOLDEN AGE’ The compilation of conception! Inspired by the French musician Yoann Lemoine a.k.a WoodKid, the infamous creator of Lana Del Rey, Rihanna and Katy Perry music videos. Never too late… the time had come for him to showcase his musical talent! This album is one of the boldest productions of 2013 in my head! Yaonn has the ability to transfer his cinematic know-how into an imaginative commemoration of sensation! A soulful, yet fearless LP envisaged by orchestral sounds of symphony, created by an array of instruments and an unconventional vocal that bellows poetic librettos. Standouts like ‘Run Boy Run’, ‘Iron’, ‘Ghost Lights’ are living testimony that there is hope in the world! His existent in the industry is not just to make a hit single but compose a f@#%ing masterpiece. The Golden Age is but a masterpiece and so are his gripping visuals! I applaud you WoodKid…you’re my Hero! Fav Track: Iron
5. M.I.A , MATANGI “Bring the Noize when we run upon them”, she sings! M.I.A had finally managed to release MATANGI on November 1, 2013! After plotting to leak the album for many moons & following her 2012 Super bowl lawsuit, the rebellious 38-year-olds LP was highly-anticipated by her followers & by George was it worth the wait! Styled by her raw flow, boastful hip-hop thumps and a hint of eastern origin. There’s no other that could’ve pulled this off, but Maya! M.I.A sings about Hindu custom, Racial Politics and pop-culture references, ‘YALA’ (You Always Live Again) in response to the popular meme YOLO! The record ‘Bad Girl’ hums of Arabic-flavored belly-shakers and club thumpers, but let’s be honest here… we all know it was as youthful as the Queen of England! Other than that, this album was the epitome of AWESOME! Fav Track: Y.A.L.A
6. SHORTSTRAW, ‘GOOD MORNING SUNSHINE Good Morning Sunshine, the sophomore album has made waves in the national music scene by acquainting Indie and traditional African Jazz known as Indie Kwela. Music without prejudice…it’s guaranteed to get you moving your feet & crinkling those brand new shoes of yours! The MK Award winners have claimed the throne in the SA music scene with their distinctive sound, but HOLT it doesn’t end there! Snagging admirers everywhere they go, with their jovial hooks and incredibly catchy insults. The band having formed the album’s entire assembly by composing music that gets you waiting for the next line just to get your howl on, tracks like, ‘Couch Potato’, ‘Good Morning Sunshine’, ‘Bikini Weather’, ‘Cold Shoulder’, ‘LBCSS,’ and ‘The Wedding Blues’, are indisputably the most prominent in this homebrew! Proudly South African…waving our flag up high! Fav Track: Couch Potato
7. ARCADE FIRE, ‘REFLEKTOR’ Reflektor was an album that triggered mindsets around the globe. Whether you liked it or not, it transformed Arcade Fire from an indie rock band to an 80’s-inspired dance-rock faction! Music influenced by none other than James Murphy, a former member of LCD Soundsystem and co-producer of the aforementioned album. A creation founded on abstract; styled by elements of acid jazz, ragtime scat, soul & blues-rock with remnants of Yeezy, Lil-Wayne & Eminem at times…I know weird right?! AMOK songs have mind-bogglingly patterns much like Radiohead’s altering repetitions, yet still inimitable in it’s own right! Yorke has continued to work with members, Red Hot Chili Pepper bassist Flea and Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich. The album takes you on the journey of matrimony with Yorke’s sailing vocal, intense studio fusion and some good ol’ ingenuity. MOVIES 2013 hasn’t been a decent year for the cinema, however, there have been a few gems on the big screen. Now this list is by no means a best-off but rather, a list of the most memorable movies to come onto SA’s cinema’s last year. A new Evil Dead remake (pants were soiled), Catching Fire ( Mockingjay ringtones abound), The Hobbit sequel (walking was expected and recieved), Pacific Rim (totes underrated). Lets not forget the cinematic genius of The Grandmaster and everyone crapping themselves over The Great Gatsby. Whether they sucked, whether they didn’t if you havent seen them yet, click on the poster and go straight to the trailer. Also I would put American Horror Story Season 2 on this list as the greatest thing to come out of 2013 but its not a movie so watevs.

MOVIES 2014 seems to be the year of the long awaited sequel. Disneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first evil princess (Angelina) and a Godzilla remake that looks like 10000 times better than that Matthew Broderick piece of crap from 96 makes me smile internally. We can also look forward to sequels to 300, the new Spiderman movie that im kinda wetting my boxerbriefs over, How to Train Your Dragon 2 AND Planet of the Apes ( awww shit James Franco). We are in for a lot of special effects awesomeness. which, lets be honest, is the only reason we drive all the way to the mall for anyway.
