The threat of rain did not dampen the spirit of hundreds of people who took in Richer’s Annual Canada Celebration held at both the Dawson Trail Museum and the Dawson Trail Park.
Following the cancellation of Canada Day events in multiple communities throughout the southeast, Richer organizers dug in their heals to ensure the event would not skip a beat.
The Richer Community Club, the Richer recreation Committee, the Dawson Trail Museum, the Richer Métis Local and the Richer Fellowship Church would like to thank the volunteers and sponsors who came through again to ensure we all had a day to remember.

Organic Pest Control for Potato Bugs, Flea Beetles, and Aphids
By Trish Sinanan Growzone3.ca
Organic pest control is becoming more popular among gardeners who want to maintain a healthy, chemical-free environment. Gardening organically means nurturing your plants without relying on synthetic chemicals. By relying on natural methods and materials, organic pest control not only protects plants from harmful pests but also promotes a balanced ecosystem. Here are some organic strategies to try to manage challenging pests like potato bugs, flea beetles, and aphids.
Potato Bugs
Potato bugs, or Colorado potato beetles, are notorious for damaging potato crops. Here are some organic strategies to control them:
1. Handpicking: Regularly inspect your plants and manually remove beetles, larvae, and eggs. Drop them into a bucket of soapy water to kill them.
2. Mulching: Use straw mulch around your potato plants. Mulch can create a barrier that deters beetles from laying eggs.
3. Neem Oil: Spray neem oil on the plants. Neem oil disrupts the feeding and reproduction of potato bugs.
4. Beneficial Insects: Introduce natural predators like ladybugs and lacewings, which feed on potato bug larvae.
Flea Beetles
Flea beetles are tiny pests that chew small holes in leaves, stunting plant growth. Here’s how to control them organically:
1. Row Covers: Use floating row covers to protect young plants from flea beetles. Ensure the covers are well-secured to prevent beetles from getting underneath.
2. Companion Planting: Planting marigolds, nasturtiums, or catnip
nearby can repel flea beetles.
3. Diatomaceous Earth: Dust plants with diatomaceous earth. This natural powder is abrasive to the beetles but safe for plants.
4. Trap Crops: Plant trap crops like radishes or mustard greens to lure flea beetles away from your main crops.
Aphids
Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that suck sap from plants, leading to distorted growth. Effective organic methods to control aphids include:
1. Water Spray: Use a strong jet of water to dislodge aphids from plants. This method is effective for small infestations.
2. Insecticidal Soap: Spray insecticidal soap on affected plants. The soap kills aphids on contact without harming beneficial insects.
3. Garlic and Neem Spray: Make a homemade spray using garlic or neem oil. Both have insecticidal properties that repel and kill aphids.
4. Beneficial Insects: Encourage beneficial insects like ladybugs, hoverflies, and parasitic wasps that prey on aphids.
Preventive Measures
1. Healthy Soil: Maintain healthy soil through composting and crop rotation. Healthy plants are more resistant to pest attacks.
2. Diverse Plantings: A diverse garden with a mix of plants can reduce pest problems by confusing and repelling pests.
3. Regular Monitoring: Regularly inspect your garden for early signs of pest problems. Early intervention can prevent large infestations. By using these organic methods, we can reduce pesticide use, ensuring a healthy and productive garden. Embracing organic pest control not only protects your plants but also supports a thriving ecosystem in your garden.
