Director’s Message ‘Distinct’. This is the focus of the 2019 edition of the MCAST ICA Festival, a creative arts festival which builds on the achievements of my predecessors, and which this year has been extended to span a full month between 4 July and 4 August. ‘Distinct’ is represented by a stylised fingerprint - the mark that distinguishes one individual from another. Such is the work showcased during this festival; students from the same cohort having followed the same programme of studies and therefore having experienced a similar formation are showing that which distinguishes themselves from their peers. Moreover, through this festival one can also appreciate the various idiosyncratic outcomes reached through the diverse areas of studies within the creative arts – Fine Arts,

Photography, Game Art & Visual Design, Interactive Media, Graphic Design, Creative Media, Journalism, Spatial & Product Design, Fashion & Retail, Performing Arts, and Cultural Heritage. Our learners have gradually developed an identity, facilitated by the experiences afforded them along their journey within the Institute for the Creative Arts. We did not walk this journey alone. Supported by our mother institution MCAST, an institution that also has a distinct identity within the field of further and higher education, and in partnership with numerous stakeholders in the industry, such formation has taken shape in a unique way that rightly deserves to be celebrated.

The context of this year’s celebration is Spazju Kreattiv – Malta’s national centre for creativity - which provides a meaningful platform to further bridge the gap between student life and life within the community and industry. Within the heart of Valletta, last year’s European Capital of Culture, it acts as a fitting venue for ‘Distinct’. Sincere thanks go to ICA staff and students who have worked tirelessly to make this event possible, colleagues within MCAST for their support and contribution, and industry partners who have been key players along the way. I trust that the result of this collaborative effort will translate into a truly distinctive experience for each one of you.

Christopher Mercieca Student Bio: The name I was given is Christopher Mercieca, fancy but not so extraordinary. I am currently a 21 year old human male. I studied a lot of subjects and I admire subject diversity. Currently, I am focusing to obtain and finish my BA in Journalism. I am into fine tailored fashion, gaming, gym, soccer and nfl. I consider myself a very calm but energetic person who controls emotions as the head dictates, apart from laughter.

I believe in many ridicules or not so subjects and mainly I prefer to listen rather than give my opinion. I am currently living in Gozo and I study in Malta, you can say I am on a daily scholastic vacation. Myself is always trying to concur fears which I consider a mechanism of safety but also of stupidness. My aim in life is not to be successful in the eyes of society, but to be successful in the eyes of my mirror.

Karl Azzopardi Student Bio: I am a third-year journalism student with a passion towards human stories and politics. Growing up in such a small island has taught me the importance of living in a community, and I feel that journalism is the perfect platform to expose inequality, while striving to be the voice of the unheard in society. I currently work as a journalist with the independent newspaper MaltaToday and have been commissioned public relations work with the University of Malta. I am also keen on photography and videography, and try my best at incorporating an artistic element to my journalistic work, as I feel that by doing so the audience’s attention is better captured and the scope of my work is better understood.

Mauro Karl Sultana Student Bio: Currently, in the process of obtaining a B.A (Honours) degree, Mauro is already thinking ahead to read for a Master’s Degree in the coming months. Presently, he is engaged with a Financial Services firm, mainly handling the PR function and other client facing queries. A strong believer in the power of student activism, Mauro regularly dabbles in student politics and coordinates multiple events in relation to such affairs. Besides being keen on current affairs, he also considers himself to be a social media enthusiast.

To be successful, Mauro deems it is important to be ambitious and always looking to tap into new ventures. In terms of leisure, he enjoys a good movie binge but can also be found planning his next trip.

Sara Schembri Student Bio: A 23 year old from Zurrieq, a BA student in Journalism and currently working as Team Leader in a Research Interviewing Team. Writing and learning languages and exploring new cultures on my travels are my passions. I would consider writing to be my best asset. This article I wrote after attending the Interreg European meetings that were held in Malta back in 2017. I also visited the location of where the experiment was being conducted, in the north of Malta at Gnejna and Ballut. The event was attended by citizens from all over Europe who were doing a followup on the experiment.

He regularly contributes to both weekly newspapers BusinessToday and Maltese newspaper ILLUM.His main areas of interest are politics, human stories, business, and sports. He is also a history and music aficionado and an avid reader.

Andrew Borg Carbott Student Bio: Andrew Borg Carbott is currently reading a Bachelor’s degree in journalism. Andrew has quite a lot of experience under his sleeve. He started his career working at a local television station and progressed to the most popular talk show in Malta, Xarabank as a journalist and Gadgets, the only gadget show in Malta as a content creative, both for television and online mediums. Throughout his career Andrew Borg Carbott won several awards such as the Institute of Maltese Journalists Human Story Award and a competition hosted by the European Commission’s and featured in the Panorama magazine with his environmental journalism piece. He is also the President of the Malta Youth Press. He just set up his own media company and aspires to make it one of the leading media distributors on the island.

Miguela Xuereb Student Bio: Miguela is a photojournalist and freelance photographer focusing on documentary, street and current issue.
