Synopsis Working on The Hunchback of Seville by Charise Castro Smith was an excellent opportunity for our students to look at performance production at 360 degrees and prepare for a playful encounter with the spectator. Taking entitlement to power as its thematic core, Castro Smith’s mockery of historical monarchic

succession made us reflect on issues related to political leadership, religion, cultural stereotypes, colonialisation, and more. Although the play is set in Spain 1504, we could not help but feel a deep resonance with our times. Our challenge: how to play with these echoes, and draw the spectator into our performative game.

Performing Arts Courses An introduction to the Performing Arts programme at ICA In 2015 MCAST launched vocational education in the Performing Arts through its flagship Level 3 MCAST Diploma in the Performing Arts. It has since developed this area of studies further through the Level 4 Advanced Diploma, whilst also incorporating a Performing Arts unit in the new Foundation Certificate in the Creative Arts at Level 2. This academic year it has also launched its Level 6 BA in Performing Arts. All programmes are designed with a view to progression to higher-level courses in the Performing Arts, and the gradual formation of technical and artistic people and professionals.

Performing Arts Level 2 Unit 4 of the Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Creative Arts is An Introduction to Performance Skills. The focus is on expressing emotions and ideas through drama, movement and music. The learning outcomes of this unit are: 1. Reproduce drama / movement / music sequences; 2. Improve skills in drama / movement / music; 3. Communicate emotions and ideas through drama / movement /music.

Lyana Dayle Del Rosario Foundation Certificate in the Creative Arts During Drama I learned a lot about the different roles and personalities I can portray. The Performing Arts help us to understand that people read meaining in all the actions we do, on or off the stage, although we may not be aware of this sometimes. Creativity, passion, imagination, and persistence were important in studying Drama. Thanks to our lecturer’s humor and intellect we were able to understand the principles of Drama, but this also helped our personal growth.

Qudoos Muskaan Foundation Certificate in the Creative Arts Drama lessons have taught me a lot, especially exploring being in someone else’s shoes, being in different situations, and performing different emotions. This also helped me in real life, in unfamiliar situations where I had to improvise. Performing Arts subjects help us a lot to express ourselves on and off the stage, but also made us realise how important self-reflection is. I am glad teachers gave us the opportunity to let out our emotions, but also learn to be patient, creative, passionate, and understandable, both in and out of class. Lessons were fun, creative, and educational, which made us look forward to each session.

Frances Galea Performing Arts Level 4.1 During my first year in this course I learned about what the Performing Arts industry consists of, and how one can prepare for it. Together with my lecturers and classmates, I experienced creating an original production from scracth. This was quite challenging, but also very rewarding, especially since we got the opportunity to perform our work abroad as part of an Erasmus Plus project. In the Performing Arts there are no limits to creativity and discovery. Looking back, this has been an extraordinary year.

Neil Zerafa Performing Arts Level 4.1 I have been studying theatre for the last three years, but this is my first year at MCAST. What I found different is that my course is totally focused on the Performing Arts. It touches on all aspects of performance, and as I advance I can concentrate on specific areas. Another great advantage is that the lecturers actually operate in the Performing Arts industry, and could possibly be my colleagues in the near future.

Katrina Borg Performing Arts Level 5.1 I have always had a passion for the Performing Arts and wanted to join the B.A. (Hons.) course the minute I heard it was opening. Through this course, I have not only improved and learned new skills, but also continued to discover myself and my limits. It was through this course that I truly started to appreciate all the different aspects of the Performing Arts, such as light, set, sound, and costume design. I have always found constructive help whenever I needed it, thanks to our dedicated lecturers who push us to achieve our very best.

David Grech Performing Arts Level 4.2 Over the past two years, I have learnt that tackling and overcoming difficult challenges might seem a nuisance at first, but then results in an important lesson. This course has a broad scope, providing you with information on every aspect of the Performing Arts. Especially, it teaches you a lot about this industry.

Lisa Baldacchino Performing Arts Level 5.1 I have always loved the Performing Arts and over the past year I have started to work in the Performing Arts industry as a Stage Manager and an Assistant Stage Manager. Previously, I chose Media Studies, but when I heard that MCAST had opened a BA Course in Performing Arts, I switched courses the following year and have not looked back since. I am so glad to have made this choice, and I am really grateful to be working alongside some lecturers who also operate in the industry. Through this course, I am learning about technical aspects related to lights design and set design, and I have started to appreciate this work even more.

Emma Chetcuti Performing Arts Level 5.1 I started MCAST from Level 2, and I was certain I was not going to make it all the way. I have always loved the Performing Arts, I always wanted to act and dance, but I was too afraid of doing anything. I started the course in Performing Arts at Level 3, and now I am doing my BA – I never imagined I would be here someday. Through the Performing Arts I have also learned to look at the ups and downs in the world from different perspectives, and to wonder about life, about how far you can go. It helps you explore yourself and find what you want to be in life. It gets you out of your comfort zone, in a proactive, creative way! The best decision I made in my life, finally exploring my true self.
