EDITOR IN CHIEF: JAMIE TONGE
EDITOR’S NOTE Words cannot express how excited I am to finally be launching the brand of Distinct Homme. It has literally taken a full year to get to this very point, to not only share the talents of my self, but of others as well. Though in the beginning stages, there were individuals that seemed to be on board who shared my vision and totally apprehended the idea of the brand, but have somehow in the middle of it all felt otherwise. But beyond that, I was fortunate enough to work with some tremendous young and talented artists I have ever seen. From photography, to designers, to models, it’s just been an overall amazing experience. And I am glad to be working with the team I have now.

This particular issue provides a lot of information regarding fashionable options for the season; work out tips, great travel gear, and some local hot spots. The best thing that I can say about it is that it’s extremely consumer friendly and relatable. Because when you start any form of a business, practicality is the number one thing that must be enforced. My favorite part of this issue is the XV Beacon Hotel in Boston. Just on the interiors and the amenities that it had to offer had me completely sold. The Affordable Threads piece in the fashion section was too my favorite as well. I think I hit the head on the nail with that one! But at the end of the day, the whole idea for this publication is to not be so repetitive with the same content or information that one can seek in all other men’s magazines. But I wanted to provide my guy with a more informative platform to the idea and thought about the brand. And I think what works to my advantage is that I know points from both sides; from a readers view and editor’s of view. I know what’s lacking and what’s needed in my demographic. I think the time has come that someone step up to the plate and knock this one out the park. This is only the beginning. Jamie C. Tonge Editor-In-Chief

As we enter the colder season, certain parts of the body are going require a little more TLC (tender loving care for the abbreviatedly-challenged). Take your lips for example, not only are lips the most sensual part of your body, but one of the most absorbent. Many of you guys do take this area for granted and don’t apply a lip moisturizer until problems, such as chapping, occurs. Once this happens, getting the moisture on the lips back into balance is harder than preventing healthy lips from becoming dry in the first place. So do yourself a favor and grab a lip balm, which heals, soothes and protects against the weather to come. Might I offer some suggestions?

Take a trip to the Lower Eastside area of New York City for more than just a grooming experience. Frank’s Chop Shop is a popular barbershop for the mere fact that they provide a traditional, yet high end grooming experience. Like Old-fashioned straightedge razor shaves, along with haircuts and shapeups. There are no distractions like loud flat-screen TVs, piles of product clutter or spa stations. As the interior embraces a classic barbershop of 1930’s Americana that is slowly, but surely vanishing. Each barber actually gets to know the client, and must say they’ve done quite the job. But don’t be surprised if you’re getting a shape up next to Adrian Brody, Drake, Jake Gyllenhaal, Rick Ross or Anderson Cooper. Frank’s client list is extensive of which whom include A-list actors and celebrities, Hip Hop artists, and TV personalities. But the word of mouth hot spot became a must go to destination. Indulge in great conversations; make connections and collaborations while getting yourself groomed at the same time. The place is honestly like a business hub. But you mustn’t forget a souvenir from their retail selling space inside the shop. Selling caps, t-shirts and razor chain necklaces bearing the shop’s logos. The products are also available online and in specialty boutiques around the world.

n sunny Los Angeles, California the name Steph Jones (who now goes by his real name Garrain Jones) would be most likely be associated with music. But oddly enough, the Missouri City, Texas native has made quite the transition from the world of music to a more promising and realistic route into the realm health and fitness. But what made him have a change of heart?

T
hrough trials and tribulations, Jones had hit rock bottom in his music career. Though tunes was always imbedded in his heart, he took it serious in 2005 and later on signed with Def Jam through Ludacris’ label, Disturbing The Peace (DTP). Only to leave the label, Garrain was with only $2 in his pocket and living out of his car. The decision between food and gas wasn’t the only thing that was to cloud his mind. Jones always had an interest in health and remained optimistic about the thought of it and where it could possibly take him. He then got involved with a global nutrition company, Herbalife, and began to immediately experience changes in his body that he knew would in fact be beneficial to others and decided to share this newfound journey.

DISTINCT HOMME
A year into this new venture, Garrain has accomplished quite a bit. He opened a nutrition club in Culver City, CA called Active Nutrition where you get complete training on designing customizable nutrition programs from top doctors, nutritionists and
scientists. His client list continues to grow, with a couple of familiar names in the mix like Morris Chestnut and Laz Alonzo. Also creating a group of amazing health coaches, that he nicknames the HerbaHeroes. Seems like things are going great for the fitness guru. But 11 years in LA, The sun is something that you’d become accustomed to year round. When deciding where to work out, I’m sure is a no brainer. But what about the folks that actually know what it is to buy a coat or no what snow is? We asked Mr. Jones some questions on how to stay fit and healthy for the colder days ahead.
1. AS THE TEMPERATURE GETS A LITTLE COOLER IN THE UPCOMING MONTHS, SHOULD OUR WORKOUT REGIMEN INCREASE OR DECREASE? Should stay consistent. But keep a closer look after yourself as the cold weather often brings illness and you are more susceptible while you are completing workouts. Also being in close workout quarters with numerous people will increases your chances of illness.
2. WHAT ARE 5 GREAT SNACKS THAT GUYS MUST PACK TO GET THE MOST OF NUTRIENTS AND ENERGY? Snacking is very important, thus herbalife has a line of snacking products to check out. The purpose of snacking is to stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day which contributes to energy levels. I would recommend things high in protein like protein bars, roasted soy nuts, greek yogurt, egg whites, or palm size amount of meat.
3. HOW MANY HOURS AND DAYS SHOULD ONE WORKOUT IN A WEEKS TIME? A minimum of twice a week with the correct nutrition will yield results. You can work out as many as 7 days a week but making sure you are completing workouts in a healthy schedule with the right amount of hard and easy days. I don’t recommend over 2 hours of workout at one time
4. HOW MANY AREAS OF THE BODY SHOULD BE FOCUSED ON IN ONE SESSION? Two muscle groups at a time. You never want to overwork the body. This also helps you to really hone in and focus on sculpting each section.

9. GYM MEMBERSHIPS ARE EXPENSIVE, BUT WHAT ARE THE KEY THINGS A GOOD GYM MUST HAVE IN ORDER TO GET THE MOST OUT OF IT? It is important that the location and hours of the gym match your daily schedule so you make it easy for yourself to be there. A good variety of equipment to utilize as your knowledge base and physical self grow is important as well.
10. WHEN YOU’VE REACHED YOUR IDEAL WEIGHT, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAINTAIN THAT? Eating 3 lean meals a day with protein based snacks every 2 to 3 hours is the ideal plan to be on once you have reached your goals. Continuing with consistent workouts to match as well.

Previously, I was just cooking delicious food but Master Chef taught me how to really conceptualize and execute chef quality dishes.

• Some would say that men aren’t the best of cooks and others may speak differently. What makes a great cook to you? + I don’t think gender necessarily makes a great cook. I think it all comes down to passion in your food and ambition to go outside the box. • As holidays are quickly approaching, us guys always want to be part of the prep part of the dinners but never the actual cooks. What is a great and easy dish that will get everyone’s attention? + Personally I think the men should back off and let the soul sisters cook during the holidays, but I would suggest switching up the normal ham and
• How do you feel about organic products? + I grew up on nonorganic products and I turned out all right, but I think they are great. • What are at least 5 things that all guys should have in their cupboards and/ or refrigerator? + A good seasoning blend, a variety of rice and pasta, Good cooking stocks (chicken and beef stock), wine, and fresh herbs and vegetables. • What is a common ingredient in most recipes? + Eggs or oil • Is wine always a necessity to accompany dinner? If so, is there a great wine that goes with almost everything?
• What is your specialty dish? + Hands down ,my specialty dish is shrimp Étouffée. I can cook it in my sleep with both hands tied behind my back sitting in a chair with two balls and chains on my ankles. It’s so versatile you can really use any type of meat you want such as crawfish, chicken, catfish, or sausage.
• Can you provide a great recipe for a dish that you just cannot go wrong with? Small dish or large. + Yes. Smoked salmon fried rice. One package of smoked salmon a cup of day-old rice one package fried rice seasoning
• What is a little more difficult to perfect? Desserts or entrees? + Desserts are a lot more difficult to perfect because they use exact measurements and you can get lucky and nail an entrée. For example my 3 sexy soufflés from MasterChef episode top 4 compete. • When purchasing any type of meats or poultry, what are key things to look for? + When shopping for meets I look for dry aged meats with a bright red color. When I’m shopping for poultry, I look for free range chicken and whole chickens. • What exactly is broiling? What dish usually requires that?

Produce filled shelves is visually the main attraction for the cheerful spot. Miss Lily’s Bake Shop & Melvin’s Juice Box is more than just about the name.

The one responsible for the juice bar is the legendary Melvin Major Jr. Who’s a 20year veteran of the fresh juice scene, where he spent time at Greenwich Village’s Lifethyme Market. Here at Melvin’s, he creates straightforward concoctions such as the sweet and spicy “Catch A Fire “; which has apple, beets, lemon, ginger and cayenne. Or maybe you’d like “The Cococado”; Coconut, avocado and lecithin, that is sweet and savory and has a little chew. And on the side have the jerk chicken sandwich or a boneless thigh charred on the grill. So there is no need for reservations nor calorie counts. But I will say enter at your own risk.

Topped with lobster, corn, ricotta, and just enough honey to register, a perfect sweetness that lingers after each bite is gone. As for fettuccine Alfredo, the dish is usually heavy and gummy. At Towne, its something else altogether: golden and toothsome and light. Long strands of pasta, barely cloaked in cheese and butter. There is no cream. It’s hard to believe something made out of almost nothing can be so delicious. And chicken “brick’’ style is a bird flattened like road kill that tops the porchetta for tastelessness, although it is dressed up with bits of gold leaf. Other dishes are chewy razor clams a la plancha, bland short ribs that are simply forgettable. Wash down these worldly delicacies with a wine list that is designed to suit everyone from tourists on a budget to high rollers looking to impress.

COFEE TABLES
Uttermost $745.00
SHAPE
Most tables are square or oblong shaped. A small square or round table goes well in front of a loveseat. As a larger version works well in front of a sectional. Rounder tables are softer to look at and allow easy navigation around them in small spaces.

Coffee Tables come in many forms, shapes and materials. Look at a coffee table as artwork for your living room. Try considering choosing one that will do more than just hold a remote or old, outdated magazines. Make a really great statement when choosing, plus it’s a great conversation starter. But keep a couple things in mind when you make the final decision.
The style of the table is indeed a big factor. You’d want to take its use into account as well. Traditional living rooms require traditional materials like cherry wood or lacquered metals, more formal. Glass tops are often employed to avoid moisture rings. But are prone to breaking or chipping. In a less formal setting like a den or family room, pine or walnut make great choices. Great against wear and tear.
By Graydon Carter and the Editors of Vanity Fair Alex MacLean $32.00 “A remarkable book that takes a trip into the magazines’ 95-year history of 300 iconic photographs. Of works from some of the worlds top photographers have become the iconic likenesses of the best-known figures from the worlds of art, film, music, sports, business, and politics.” Out of Sight: Pictures of Hidden Worlds
COFEE BOOKS
By Seymour Simon
It always helps to have something presented on your coffee table for balance with your space. But it doesn’t necessarily always have to be an object. Try a couple books.

are an essential for the colder season, mainly because they are designed to protect against basically any type of precipitation. While its original design had been invented by the Inuit Eskimo of the Arctic region for hunting purposes, protection from wind chill and wetness. The outer portion was made from seal and coated regularly with fish oil. Then was revamped a bit in the 1950’s for the United States Military Forces. It was then that it had a silk outer shell, padded with wool or down with a split hood. As for now, a lot of options are offered like color, length, material, etc. The common denominator here that has remained consistent throughout all these years is the protection that it provides.

around for more than a century. But in the early 1900’s, the young founder Charles Beckman, of only 17 worked a small job at a local leather factory. He believed that good shoes were hard to find and indeed became a shoemaker. As at the time, only factory jobs were attainable and therefore, there were limited resources for proper uniform. Over the years, as people hopped on board with Beckman more styles became to develop with various treatments and colors, as the brand became widely recognized. To this day, Red Wing has become an essential footwear item in every guys’ closet. But this brand is not only fashionable; it’s also functional against the fall and winter’s climate with insulation techniques and outer shell protection.
