Hard-Wired Memories With winter now here, there is a stretch of road I travel where the sun, low in the sky but still very strong, glares on-and-off so sharply and erratically through trees empty of leaves that it reminds me of the strobe lights popular in the ‘70s. Unfortunately, that, in turn, reminds me of the night I discovered that under those strobes fed by black lights, one and only one of my 28 teeth — a crowned front tooth — would fluoresce a dreadful bluish white. That appalling discovery wouldn’t have been so bad had I made it early in the evening, when I could have smiled a little less. But no. I grinned my brains out all night long, one lone tooth glowing wildly like a witch’s fang. It still makes me shudder — and it also makes me wonder why memories like that are so hard-wired into my brain while all the really good ones are so much more fleeting. Memories like how great I looked in a miniskirt. Or so I thought. I was a little chunky. Uh oh…
