Walking my dogs is not exercise. I wish it were, but it’s not, and that’s because there are no less than 43 other dogs in our neighborhood — all of whom we know— so when we walk, my two insist on stopping at precise six-foot intervals to sniff every blade of grass, every grain of sand, every leaf or stick, and every drop of rain or flake of snow within reach for whatever pee-mail might have been left by the last of their friends to pass by. Once satisfied that they know which of those 43 other dogs they will be addressing and how they want to reply, they piddle their answer and on we go — for another six feet. Sometimes, I wonder just what these messages say. “Warm welcome?” “Urine my thoughts?” “Yellow there!” Who knows. But I do know that at the end of each walk, my little ones are completely exhausted and ready for a nap, while I have gained another pound.
