There are over 4,500 tourism companies operating across Herefordshire and Worcestershire ranging from small Bed and Breakfasts to West Midland Safari Park. When most people think of the two counties they think of the two Cathedrals and they are indeed iconic buildings which deserve a visit, but there is so much more. Our feature article in this edition is an interview with Ken Nottage, the new Chief Executive of one of our most visited attractions, The Three Counties Showground in Malvern.

Finally, our recent event which had speakers MEP’s Malcolm Harbour and Anthea McIntyre was successful and Malcolm has asked if we can run a similar event in the autumn which will engage businesses in the EU decision making process. We will provide you with more information on this as soon as we have it. I hope to see you all soon at some of our events and if you would like to discuss any matters with me contact me on mikea@hwchamber.co.uk

Those people reading this edition early in March will, I hope, attend the Chamber’s biggest event of the year, the joint Herefordshire and Worcestershire Expo set to be held at the Three Counties Showground on Thursday 14 March. We already have a lot of stands sold and there is a real buzz that this event is going to be really successful. There is a feature on page 43. The response to the launch of the Chamber’s Golf Society has been very positive; it is an ideal opportunity to do business in a relaxed environment. The first golf day is planned for Wednesday 10 April sponsored by Hewett Recruitment. We already have a number of teams enrolled so book soon if you intend to join us. Other golf days are sponsored by mfg Solicitors and Crowther Beard

HEREFORD COMPANY DEVELOPS GAME CHANGING TECHNOLOGY FOR RUGBY Richard Lee

WRAGGE & CO ADVISES WM MORRISON SUPERMARKETS ON ITS INNOVATIVE WORKPLACE PENSION SCHEME Wragge & Co’s pensions experts have helped Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC introduce one of the fastest-growing pension schemes since the Government rolled out its workplace pension reforms. Launched to meet Morrisons’ 1 October implementation date, the innovative cash balance scheme achieved more than 16,000 members by the end of 2012. Partner Richard Lee said: “As one of only four employers with a 1 October 2012 implementation date, they had to quickly understand the issues for its business and develop a robust plan. Our knowledge of the client’s business and unique expertise in workplace pension reform enabled us to work with it on a creative solution which met all its key criteria.” While only the largest businesses are currently required to automatically enrol workers, this will ultimately affect all public and private sector employers. The number of businesses required to comply with the new duties ramps up quickly in 2013. www.wragge.com/wpr

Backed by the RFU and IRB for experimentation at elite level, January saw GoalScan’s official concept demonstration at Sixways, Worcester Warriors ground. The club’s brightest young stars from the Academy tested the unit to the max on the day in-front of reps from the IRB and the RFU. Hereford-based electronics design firm, IA Technology has developed the device, which detects whether a goal has been scored or not by creating an electronic curtain between and above the goal posts. The device sends an alert to the referee when the electronic curtain is intruded by the ball. The company arranged the demo of their concept demonstrator for Ed Morrison of the RFU and representatives from the IRB who came from Ireland to see the device in action.

The next stage for IA Technology is to work with the RFU and IRB to design and build prototypes for further trials. It’s an exciting time for the company and for the rugby industry. www.iatechnology.co.uk Duncan Williams 01432 342377 dwilliams@iatechnology.co.uk

NEXUS CREATIVE – NEW YEAR, NEW WIN The year has started well for Nexus Creative Limited after winning the contract to market the St Andrews Town Hotel in Droitwich Spa. The rolling annual contract will cover all elements of marketing, working with new owners to promote the beautiful Georgian hotel, bar and restaurant to the residents of Droitwich, the wider region and the business community. New owner Aidan Stevens said: “This was not a decision we rushed into. It was not only important to find an agency which had the complete range of technical marketing skills, but also to find a team that we could work with on a personal level. Nexus

Creative worked hard to understand what we wanted to achieve and didn’t just sell us what they had to offer.” www.nexuscl.com

MANAGERS AT GLOBAL FIRM COMPLETE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME WITH UNIVERSITY OF WORCESTER A team of managers at Malvern Instruments has completed a leadership and management programme with the University of Worcester’s Business School. The first delegates from the global firm to successfully complete the programme gathered at the University’s City Campus to receive their awards from Paul Walker, Managing Director of Malvern Instruments, and Mark Richardson, Head of Worcester Business School. In welcoming delegates and colleagues, Mark Richardson congratulated them on their success and overcoming the issues of balancing work pressure with time to study.

Paul Walker congratulated the staff of Worcester Business School and colleagues at Malvern Instruments in achieving an ‘almost impossible task’, designing and delivering a high quality programme to a diverse audience, one which had been very well received by delegates and where the impact was also being seen in company performance. A PEACHY NEW WEBSITE Peach Recruitment have recently launched their new look website, thanks to local marketing agency NinetyFive Creative. Having identified the need to invest in a new website to give clients and candidates a better user experience whilst reducing internal administration, Peach Recruitment decided to work with NinetyFive Creative, as Sarah Mayo-Evans, Managing Partner at Peach Recruitment, explains: “We attended a number of events and seminars with NinetyFive Creative, including one of their website presentations. It was obvious they

had the design and web development expertise to help us, but the fact that they focused on overall business aims and objectives and understood our company ethos really appealed to us.” Ben Barnes, Creative Director at NinetyFive Creative said: “We’re really pleased that Peach Recruitment decided to work with us. The new website reflects their modern approach to recruitment, and with the latest website technology on board they can now develop the online experience they provide as part of their overall business strategy.’’ www.peachrecruitment.net

HR4 LIMITED - TRAINING IN HARD TIMES We are all going through hard times. We are all looking at what we spend and cutting back on those none essentials. This can often mean cutting those things, which give intangible benefits but very real costs, such as marketing and training.

n Providing targeted training that will most benefit the organisation n Ensuring that it is delivered by high quality providers Doing this will provide you with people who will add value to your organisation now and in the future.

However, can we afford to do this? Recently whilst discussing the shortage of good people with two colleges who run local engineering firms, they commented how they had both started their own “in house” apprentice training programs, “to ensure that their future people would be of the highest competency and show the company in the best possible light”.

INNoVATIoN NETWoRKS – BACK BY PoPULAR DEMAND The Innovation Networks project is back, having recently received a further £1.9m of ERDF funding to support another 150 SMEs in the West Midlands. This project, which has been running successfully since 2003, supports businesses through the provision of funding to assist with the development of new products, processes or services.

Applicants can choose between a capital and a revenue grant of £10,000 to help cover their project costs. The funding is awarded as a contribution towards projects with a minimum planned expenditure of £22,500. The funding is very flexible and has been used to pay toward conducting feasibility studies, developing prototypes, tooling costs, specialist consultancy and the development of a brand image and packaging. You will need to be working in a “network”,

collaborating with two or more other small businesses within the region with the complementary resources and skills you need to develop the idea. The funding is straightforward to apply for and project staff are available to help throughout the application process.

Your project must be truly innovative, resulting in a new product, process or service and provide tangible benefits for the West Midlands economy. You should be able to demonstrate that there is market potential for your idea. All projects are independently evaluated by assessors suitably qualified in the field.

Innovation Networks Do you have a great idea for a new product, process or service? Would a £10,000 grant help your small business to buy the skills and resources you need to turn a bright idea into a product or service ready for market? Innovation Networks offers grant support to West Midlands based SMEs who are working with other regional businesses to develop innovative new products, processes or services. Revenue grants of £10,000 are available to cover product development costs such as parts and materials, prototype development, testing and I.P protection. OR Capital grants of £10,000 are available to cover costs of tooling and machinery needed to develop your new product.

WORCESTERSHIRE BUSINESS INSIGHT Malcolm Harbour, Conservative MEP and Chairman of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection committee, visited Worcester recently alongside fellow Conservative MEP; Anthea McIntyre. The Brussels policymakers were joined by local business professionals at Worcestershire County Cricket Club on Friday 25 January and received a positive response from the audience. Malcolm spoke about the Single Market Act that launched a major political drive to reform outdated Single Market rules and press national governments to fully implement the commitments that they signed up to. Anthea McIntyre told attendees about her recently launched battle to overturn “crazy” draft EU legislation which would make life impossible for businesses needing to restructure their operations. The event was organised to give attendees the opportunity to hear from the MEP’s in a QA style discussion, enabling them to voice their own opinions and concerns.

SALARY SACRIFICE CAN EASE CHILD BENEFIT CUT From the 7 January 2013, child benefit, which was previously paid to the parent or carer of every child, will be reduced for those earning over £50,000 and those earning over £60,000 will no longer qualify. This cap applies to the maximum income for one parent, not the combined income of a family, which many see as being an unfair cut. Salary sacrificing money could enable you to effectively reduce your salary to less than £50,000, potentially entitling you to remain eligible for full child benefit. You can also salary sacrifice part of your wages into your pension scheme which may offer a solution. If you earn £53,000 and make £3,000 of pension contributions, you will reduce your taxable income to £50,000. Making increased pension contributions have the long term benefits of ensuring you are saving well for retirement, however paying into a pension scheme means that you are unlikely to be able to access the funds before the age of 55. www.englishmutual.com

TOURISM

UK-FIRST HISTORY TRAIL LAUNCHED IN EVESHAM The market town of Evesham has launched a unique interactive tourism trail, using 21st Century technology to bring the past to life. The move makes Evesham the first town in the UK to use ‘Augmented Reality’ to enhance the visitor experience, promote local history and boost footfall. The technology allows anyone with a smartphone or tablet to hold up the device to any of 10 historic landmarks in Evesham, prompting a mediaeval monk to pop up onto the screen to talk through the history of the attraction. Tourism trail cards listing the attractions are available for free at the Almonry, which is the starting point of the route. The landmarks include historic buildings, statues and existing tourism signs in the town centre and Abbey Park.

The History Trail was masterminded and created by Mick Hurst, from Areca Design, a marketing agency based in Abbey Gate, Evesham, along with local cameraman and 3D animator, Andre Grout. Evesham Market Town Partnership (EMTP) has supported Areca Design’s creation of the trail, which is expected to become a blueprint for other towns to follow. www.arecadesign.co.uk

Any operator of a business within the hospitality industry knows how important posted reviews can be. A positive review can bring people flocking through the door. Conversely, the impact of negative review can be devastating.

Numbers of operators have found reviewers falsely claiming they had been bitten by bed bugs, had food poisoning or items stolen. In such cases, as an operator what should you do?

• Contact the website – notify them that you dispute the review • Take legal advice - the posting of false and malicious reviews is potentially defamatory. The law can assist in removing the posting and also seeking compensation Recent cases are significant for the industry and useful precedents are currently being set. For example, USA-based Trip Advisor has always denied it was subject to UK laws. However, in a landmark case in October last year by a Scottish guesthouse owner, it was agreed that Trip Advisor could be sued in Scotland. This decision could now be cited in cases outside of Scotland. Can you save corporation tax using the Patent Box? The new “Patent Box” tax regime is due to come into force on 1 April 2013, giving the opportunity to UK companies to reduce their UK Corporation Tax rate on qualifying profits to 10% (rather than the current 26% rate, reducing to 23% in April 2013). Qualifying profits are those attributable to qualifying patents. The main objective of the Patent Box is to incentivise companies to invest in the UK and to retain and commercialise innovation within the UK. A company must hold a qualifying patent either as an applicant/owner or as an exclusive licensee (exclusivity must be across one or more countries or territories). The legislation also allows for ownership within a group structure or via cost sharing arrangements. The company must also receive qualifying profits relating to the qualifying patent.

Examples of the type of income that will qualify are: • Sales of patented items • Patent royalties and other income from licensing • Income from products incorporating a patented element • Income from the sale of patents and infringement income • Sales of spare parts With the new regime fast approaching, now is the time to review:

Companies must also fulfil a development condition: they (or a group member) must have been involved in the creation of the patented invention or have performed a significant amount of activity to develop the patented invention, a product incorporating the patented invention or the way in which the invention is applied.

• • •

In a group situation the company must show active management of the qualifying patent and have clear substantive responsibilities.

• Do you currently hold any qualifying rights? • Should you consider filing a new application or accelerating prosecution of any pending applications to faster grant? • Can you attribute your profits to the patents that you hold? • Do you own the relevant IP rights? • Are your licences exclusive? • Do you fulfil the development criteria?

The proposed legislation limits qualifying patents to those currently valid and granted by the UK Intellectual Property Office or the European Patent Office or in certain other jurisdictions. Qualifying profits include worldwide income and cover profits from both the sale of products covered by a qualifying patent and the sale of products incorporating an invention covered by a qualified patent.

IP strategy Business models Accounting systems

We suggest you start thinking about the following questions to see whether the relief may be relevant to your company:

If you’re thinking about selling a patent, we recommend you wait until after 1st April 2013.

Looking to the future in an uncertain economy When Ken Nottage was appointed as Chief Executive of the Three Counties Agricultural Society (TCAS) in June last year, he came into the job with a remit to bring in new business. He already had a track record which suggested that he could do it: Ken came to the Three Counties Showground at Malvern having spent thirteen years as Managing Director of Gloucester Rugby, where he had successfully overseen its commercial development. Prior to that, he was Chief Executive of Newcastle United’s Sporting Club, with responsibility for its football, rugby, ice hockey and basketball clubs, all of which meant he brought with him extensive experience in the leisure sector when he took over from Nick Vincent, who retired in November after eight years at the helm at the Showground. For Ken, the key challenge is to get more people through the gates. He said: “The main emphasis of our work is to increase our commercial activity. “A key issue is that we have to increase the usage of the showground during the week. Most weekends we are busy but during midweek the showground is quiet and we have to address that by bringing in more exhibitions and similar events. We cannot sit back and assume that the business will come to us. We have to go out and attract the business. Similarly, we know we cannot depend on repeat business always coming back. For example, two of our large repeat business clients have recently collapsed, the companies failed. That underlines for us the fact that we need to seek new business as well. To bring in that additional business, we have appointed a new commercial manager and also brought in additional people in that department.” The new Commercial Manager is Suzy Hillier, who comes to the Society from Cheltenham Festivals where, as Development Director for The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival, she was responsible for raising a record £515,000 in sponsorship revenue in 2012.

Prior to that, she spent more than 20 years in sports travel, initially in operations, and later in marketing, working first at Gullivers Sports Travel and then at TUI Travel Sport Division, where her personal highlights included being in the stands at the Rugby World Cup 2003 Final in Sydney, and travelling on five British & Irish Lions Tours. Suzy heads up the Society’s new commercial department, which is responsible for income generation and the development of new activities within the shows and venue hire business, including sponsorship, sales and corporate hospitality packages. She will also look after the promotion of the recently built Three Counties Centre, which Ken sees as an important asset on which the showground can build. The Centre was officially opened in November 2011, as a multi-functional space suitable for conferences exhibitions and seminars, product launches, video shoots, parties and weddings, and has already helped to attract some prestigious events to the Showground. It complements the Society’s Severn Hall, one of the biggest free floor spaces in the region Ken said: “We have to exploit the commercial opportunities connected to the showground and the

most obvious one of them is the new building, which went up eighteen months ago. “Clearly the state of the economy is having an impact on what we do and we have to respond to that. Our conferences and banqueting is 25-30 per cent down in the past two years and that is down in large part to the reduction in the public sector. Public sector clients who would use us now use church halls and smaller venues and we have to make sure we replace that business. The new building and the appointment of new people in our commercial department has to be part of that process.” Another development is the way the team is gaining a better understanding of its customers. Ken said: “One of the things we are doing is installing a system which gives us more information about the people who come through our gates. It will record more information about them, which is important. Much of our approach is about retention of business and to do that, you need to know as much as possible about your clients. You need to know who they are and where you can find them.“

A key issue is that we have to increase the usage of the showground during the week. Most weekends we are busy but during midweek the showground is quiet and we have to address that by bringing in more exhibitions and similar events. We cannot sit back and assume that the business will come to us. We have to go out and attract the business. 024

Twinning initiatives that bring about business benefits

Dillenburg, Germany

Town Twinning has long been a key driver in developing links between towns and cities. However, there’s more to it than community links, there are business benefits as well when communities develop a deeper understanding of each other. BD asked a few of the people involved in town twinning for their views. Kington Marines Twinning Association Kington Marines Twinning Association is now in its 33rd year and the benefits are there to see. Marines is a medium size town North West of Paris and Karen Bennett, of the association, said: “The people of Marines and Kington have over the years formed firm friendships and invitations to parties and weddings have been attended from both sides. “Children of all ages have learnt their friends language by e-mailing or using Facebook to keep in touch between visits which of course helps them with their schooling “The benefits of the Twinning are numerous, including learning or refreshing their knowledge of a different

026 BD12.indd 26

language, the delights of different foods and lifestyles plus history, geography and wine appreciation. “The trips that are organised are to showcase the local areas and life in different times. On visits to Marines we have been to a Champagne producers, a vehicle museum, Peugeot car factory and the ‘kids‘ to Disneyland Paris “The Twinning also brings locals from both towns together into groups with a common bond and a desire to try new things and to meet new people. The benefits to the towns are more trade with social events being held in the towns. We also always try and hi-light local produce by taking them to our hosts as gifts they in turn try to take some home with them. “Following the popularity of the Twinning stall at the Christmas market in Kington there is now a French market held in Kington on a regular basis.”

City of Hereford Twinning Association Hereford has been twinned for many years with Dillenburg in Germany and Vierzon in France, ancient towns with local economies built on the agricultural products of their surrounding areas and some local industry.

They are much like Hereford and Ute Hitchin, of the town twinning association, which was formed in 1989, said: “Our aim is to bring people and communities together, and to encourage and help with cultural, social, educational and business links between the city and its twin towns. “We organise regular exchange visits between Dillenburg and Vierzon and co-ordinate and arrange visits to trade fairs with local produce. “Hereford City Mayors and other dignitaries have visited our twin towns and participated at functions and ceremonies. On these occasions our members provide support with hosting and interpreting. “We foster educational links, mediate between schools and facilitate placements and accommodation for young students. “Through our activities and contacts, our association contributes to local tourism by raising Hereford’s profile abroad and welcoming visitors from our partner towns. “On these occasions, whenever possible, we promote Hereford business and produce. After a visit to Vierzon last September Hereford’s Mayor, Cllr Wilcox, wrote that ‘… things bode well for our strengthening relations.“ For more information please contact the association's Secretary on 01432 353 717.

coverfeature Bromyard-Athis Twinning Association During the late 1970s, a link was formed through the establishment of an exchange between the Queen Elizabeth High School and the secondary school in Athis de l’Orne, in Normandy, largely at the instigation of Malcolm Moore, head of languages at the school at that time. In 1978, a colleague teaching French at Ross-on-Wye let it be known that Athis, a small town near Ross-on Wye's twin town, Conde sur Noireau, was looking for a twin. A series of exchange visits by interested people led to the establishment of a formal twinning on 5 July 1980. Martin Ganderton, of the Bromyard-Athis Twinning Association, said: “We are rather unusual. The association is entirely self-financing, save for a small annual grant which was paid for several years by Herefordshire Council to all recognised Twinning groups in the county, and is run by a committee, under strict adherence to its constitution. “The basic principle underpinning its activities is the fostering of better understanding between ordinary members of society on either side of the English Channel. With no civic trappings, members stay in ordinary homes, and welcome French guests in return, rather than stay in hotels. “Of course, it helps to have a smattering of each other’s language, but gestures and the regular perusal

The Twinning also brings locals from both towns together into groups with a common bond and a desire to try new things and to meet new people. The benefits to the towns are more trade with social events being held in the towns. We also always try and hi-light local produce by taking them to our hosts as gifts they in turn try to take some home with them.

of a dictionary can help to reach an understanding - or occasionally an hilarious misunderstanding. “It is amazing that there always seems so much ‘us and them‘ between Britain and France at the national level, and yet so much warmth and friendship at the personal level. “For more than 30 years now, there have been annual exchanges, sometimes with just a small party, but with more than 60 taking part in special years, like the 30th anniversary in 2010, and when Athis de l’Orne hosts a large country fair, the ‘Comice‘.

have been many visits made to Saverne: youth football teams, swimming teams, school choirs and school exchange. “This has left a legacy in Leominster of knowledge that Europe may have different cultures but friendship is universal. “When the French twinning group visit Leominster it is always our opportunity to ‘show off’ the town, its environment and best of local food and drink. We have learnt to appreciate the remarkable assets of our town which can so easily be taken for granted.

“The Association holds three or four social events each year, and in this way raises funds to support the programme which is put together when our friends visit us.” * To support the association, contact Martin Ganderton on 01885 482716. There is an annual subscription of £10 per household.

Leominster Saverne Twinning Association Leominster has been officially twinned with Saverne in the Alsace region of France for 20 years. The towns are of similar size, both are close to borders (Wales/Germany) and both are surrounded by beautiful countryside and rich agricultural land. Leominster Saverne Twinning Association Chairman Chris Hinsley said: “Leominster Saverne twinning is based on personal family relationships and not on an official civic or commercial basis. “Through twinning, Leominster as a town has learnt that French and English living is not so different.

Saverne, France

“Leominster as a town now has a better understanding of our European neighbours, lifelong friendships have been made and the future is established through continuing school exchanges. “All this has meant a renewed pride in our countryside and an appreciation of the superb quality of our local produce.“

“We all have the same problems, jobs taxes, health and politicians. Twenty years of twinning between the two towns has involved many people of all ages. There

MEETING THE APPRENTICESHIP CHALLENGE The team at NEW College’s dedicated business development unit, Unique Skills People (USP) has a wealth of experience when it comes to helping employers find the right young people to fill Apprenticeship vacancies. NEW College’s work with local employers training new staff via the Apprenticeship scheme has already paid dividends, offering a variety of businesses across all sectors an innovative way to harness and develop fresh new talent. NEW College can work closely with your business to recruit able and suitable people through the National Apprenticeship Service.

which delivers high-level technical training for Harley-Davidson technicians from countries throughout Europe and America. “It’s an amazing experience being given the chance to work for such a high-profile company so early in my career”, said Ryan. A campaign over February and March will now seek to show Redditch businesses how and why they would benefit from taking on more apprentices, with the aim of creating more local apprenticeships that young people could access through the National Apprenticeship Scheme.

Two current Apprentices studying at NEW College told us how they were benefitting from the experience. Adam, of Longbridge, completing the first year of his Apprenticeship, works at Woodyard Garage in Redditch. Adam said: “I always wanted to be a mechanic, and actually working in a garage gives me more understanding and practical experience than any other route”.

The Redditch Apprenticeship Challenge is part of a campaign to boost local enterprise and skills by a partnership of Redditch Borough Council, NEW College, the National Apprenticeship Service, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, and the local enterprise partnerships of both Worcestershire and Greater Birmingham and Solihull. NEW College has already pledged 5 new Apprenticeship places within the organisation as a show of commitment to the challenge. Potential apprentices will also be able to discuss apprenticeship opportunities with North East Worcestershire College at drop in sessions in the Kingfisher Centre in Redditch during March as part of the campaign. The College has a range of activities planned for Apprenticeship Week 11-15th March 2013. Visit the website www.discovernewcollege.com for details.

AGENCIA FUNDRAISER ACHIEVES AN A+ The Agencia team are delighted to report the successful landing of each team member from their experience with Zip slides UK on the 13th October in support of Dementia UK valuable work to raise awareness and much needed funds to support the work of specialist Admiral Nurses. The teams’ fabulous experience and drive, along with the support of sponsors from around the globe raised in excess of £510.

Victoria Austin (Business Development Manager) said “It was a fantastic day, with hair-raising moments for some of the team, but we are delighted to have raised the bar well above our initial target of £300 for such a valued charity and would like to thank all of our sponsors.” Graham Barnett (Business Support Manager) said “Agencia has been heavily involved over the years in supporting social care and health organisations to identify the changes needed to take account of the rising numbers of older people and those suffering with dementia. These challenges, linked with people living longer mean there are different expectations of today’s generations, with greater emphasis on independence and self-directed care. It was fantastic to take a different approach in our support of this societal need.”

What happens though when computer aided design (CAD) skills are required? Are CAD qualifications a reliable indication of CAD skills? There are many anecdotal tales where expectations and have not been met. The problem is that CAD software is much harder to use than for example Word or Excel. Therefore CAD

skills naturally go rusty if not used. Gone are the days when you went straight from a CAD course into a job. So many employers now use independent CAD skills assessment software with surprising results. See www. knowledgesmart.net - customer testimonials. Fortunately for job seekers, recruitment companies and employers, candidates can take an affordable CAD training course which includes an independent CAD skills assessment. Followed by on-going practice and re-takes to provide genuine current CAD skills. It's even 1/2 price for students and unemployed. See www.autocadtraining.co.uk

THE ART oF BUSINESS British Sculptor Caro Sweet has been an ambassador for the arts in Worcestershire for many years. Her sculptures in bronze and iron are commissioned and exhibited in permanent settings worldwide. This year Caro is joining the Chamber of Commerce. “Art and business are inextricably linked,” says Caro, “indeed there are many fine public sculptures celebrating the traditional interconnectedness of Art, Industry, Science and Literature.” “Sculpture communicates through both the language of vision and feelings. It’s a fabulous way to show the world what your company is all about by embodying it’s ethos and spirit in a work of art.” “Even better, there is increasing evidence that art precedes growth, not, as is often thought, the other way round. My purpose in joining the Chamber is to explore these links.” www.carosweet.com

The beauty boutique team can also provide you with a one-to-one consultation where you can indulge yourself in luxurious beauty treatments that will ensure you feel fantastic when you leave the salon. You can also take advantage of a VIP experience allows you to hire out the salon for the day and provides you with champagne, your own personal hairdresser and beautician, which is all arranged at your request. www.amarishair.co.uk

EVER CONSIDERED WHO YOU MIGHT BE ALIENATING? Racking your brains for a new approach in 2013? Well, why not take a quick Deaf Awareness course with Sign Solutions and extend your business to the estimated 10 million Deaf people in the UK? Never underestimate the power of word-of-mouth, and that is how a lot of news gets around the UK’s ever-expanding Deaf community. Therefore by simply making your staff aware of how to meet and greet Deaf customers, you will instantly buff up your reputation among the community and by so doing increase traffic to your business and promote your services to a population who you have perhaps, up until now, disregarded. The most innovative way for you to take this small yet significant step is via an online course. The e-learning option is a great alternative to in-house training sessions. www.signsolutions.uk.com

SUPPoRTING THE oLYMPIC LEGACY New Chamber member ‘Ready, Steady, Win’ is a sports bursary seeking to manage support for young aspiring sportsmen and women in Herefordshire. It is an entirely voluntary organisation, looking for companies that share the aim of helping our youngsters achieve their full sporting potential. For a rural county with limited facilities, Herefordshire did incredibly well to produce four 2012 Paralympics medallists. The challenge now is to help more

able-bodied and disabled athletes from the county to compete at national level and perhaps even for GB at games in future. Anticipated future demand requires ‘Ready, Steady, Win’ to constantly replenish its resources and is therefore asking members to help with a donation, no matter how small. One of the directors would be pleased to come and discuss the bursary with any interested party. Please ring 07977 987705 or email anntopping@ leadership.org.uk with any questions or to arrange a meeting.

MENToRING If you feel that you and your business could benefit from being mentored but you’re not eligible for this scheme contact the Chamber on 0845 641 1641 to discuss other mentoring programmes.

HEWETT PARTNERS WITH UNIVERSITY over the last ten years the University of Worcester has grown greatly in scope and scale.

More graduates than ever have earned good degrees. The University contribution to the city of Worcester and beyond has been significant and is growing day by day. Under the inspired and innovative eye of its Vice Chancellor Professor David Green and his team, the University is seeing successful and substantial growth and an enviable national profile in what is a difficult climate. One of the university’s missions is to not only ensure that the students attain their academic achievements but also acquire a high level of employability skills by the time they leave. To achieve this aim the University is also keen to extend their relationships with the business community. Many of these young people are the managers and potential leaders of

In March 2011, she began her company training by producing quotation and proposal documents for customers. She has since progressed to managing key stages from initial contact to the delivery and installation of the product. By April 2012, she had completed NVQ level 2 in Business and Administration (after attending day release at HGTA’s premises) and awarded the ‘Commerce Apprentice of the Year 2012’ title, by

British Olympian Sarah Storey at HGTA’s certificate and awards evening in November. Louise is now working on NVQ Level 3 and says: “I am looking forward to a successful and fulfilling future, building on the knowledge and skills I have learned, and the experiences I have gained during my Apprenticeship.” www.hgta.org

tomorrow. It makes sense for local business to engage and develop their links and create a pipeline of talent, holding on to local graduates and enabling them to see the opportunities available on their doorsteps. We can all participate in contributing and giving students the opportunity to gain real experience in the world of work developing their commercial awareness and perhaps some of the softer skills that will help give them a leading edge as they enter their future careers. There are also real benefits to the development of our own budding managers who can directly share their knowledge and skills. Hewett Recruitment were delighted to recently sign a partnership agreement with the University supporting a new innovative project – ‘Earn as you Learn’ improving employability of students to find out how your business can work with the university contact Gill Slater: g.slater@worc.ac.uk www.worc.ac.uk

NEW COLLEGE WORCESTER - PEERS IN SCHOOLS VISIT FROM LORD FAULKNER OF WORCESTER New College Worcester hosted a visit and talk from a member of the House of Lords on Friday 25 January 2013, to encourage students to engage more with the political and parliamentary process. Lord Faulkner met with sixth form Politics students for an hour to talk about the work and role of the House of Lords. This was followed by a question and answer session on various aspects of the parliamentary process and life at Westminster generally.

The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s ‘Peers in Schools’ programme, which has been running across the UK since 2007 and has so far involved around 50,000 young people. This continuing outreach programme sends members of the House of Lords into schools and colleges across the country to give talks in support of the citizenship curriculum. www.newcollegeworcester.co.uk

SANCTUARY LAUNCHES EMPLoYEE VoLUNTEERING SCHEME Sanctuary Group has launched a new employee volunteering scheme for staff. The scheme has been developed as part of Sanctuary’s commitment to social responsibility and employee development, and gives staff the opportunity to volunteer for placements in the Group’s different business streams and with partnering organisations.

Melanie Denning with Lorraine Kelly at a recent visit to the theatre

meLanie denning, Business Development Manager (Corporates) Courtyard Centre for the Arts, Herefordshire What does your company do? We’re a multi-art form community arts centre and a registered charity. Who are your customers? Many and varied, depending on the particular show, film or event. What advice can you give to businesses looking to get involved with the Theatre? We increasingly rely on outside support (individuals and companies) for our community work but offer a lot in return. Membership of our Business Club enables the business to promote itself widely to our growing audiences in a strategic and targeted way while publicly demonstrating support for this much loved venue. What is the best thing about working in your business? All of the dedicated staff, the many volunteers and supporters (including the Board) and our growing audiences who all believe in what we’re trying to achieve... that art, whatever the genre, should be creative, enjoyable and easily accessed by as many people as possible across Herefordshire. And the worst? Not having enough hours in the day to spread the word even more widely about this great venue and all that it achieves on a daily basis. www.courtyard.org.uk

The aim is to share knowledge and expertise with others, gain new skills, and make a meaningful contribution to the communities where Sanctuary operates. One of the first Sanctuary employees to take part in the volunteering scheme was IT specialist Meg Hearne. She spent two days at Gloverspiece Minifarm near Droitwich, which takes a range of animals to visit local

Sanctuary care homes and sheltered schemes for our older residents to see. Meg spent time getting involved in looking after a range of animals, including sheep and donkeys, and also helped the farm team maintain the facilities. She said: “My day-to-day job is office-based so it was a completely different experience to be working in the great outdoors. It was very rewarding to see the difference I made at the farm. Volunteering has been a great confidence-building experience and has helped to develop my ability to work on my own initiative as well as part of a team.” www.sanctuary-group.co.uk

MALCOLM SCOTT CONSULTANTS GAIN PLANNING PERMISSIONS FOR VARIOUS GREEN BELT DEVELOPMENTS Malcolm Scott Consultants have made an excellent start to the new year with a number of successful retail planning permissions. Planning permission has been granted for a 1500m² Retail Store in an out of centre location in the West Midlands. The firm also secured an important planning permission for major development proposals at Highfield Garden World in Gloucestershire. The proposals include the relocation and expansion of Greenways Restaurant and, importantly, 5,300m² of unrestricted A1 Retail Space has been secured. Paul Barton said “A thorough analysis of the impact which the retail developments would have, together with a positive relationship with development control officers, allowed the schemes to be approved. We are working on a number of retail developments at present and, whilst there may currently be a somewhat depressed economic outlook towards retailing, we recognise a number of retailers in specific markets are looking to broaden their portfolio and we are pleased to assist.” The practice is also experiencing an increase in residential projects from those developers looking to ensure their sites receive the best possible chance to secure planning permission, as the window of opportunity for local planning authorities (LPAs) to develop Local Plans expires at the end of March and National Planning Policy Framework policies have increased significance. Malcolm Scott Consultants expect astute clients to continue to progress planning applications where LPAs have not advanced their Plans and there is a recognised shortfall in housing supply. NEXT ISSUE OF BUSINESS DIRECTION... THE ONLINE REVOLUTION The next edition of BD will have the theme of The Online Revolution so for the Last Word in this edition we spoke to the Malvern Cyber Security Group to find out what it is and why it is important to all businesses.

What is Cyber Security? Cyber Security is the infrastructure in the networks, computers, programs and data to prevent them from attack, damage or unauthorised access. This includes not only protection from unauthorised activities or untrustworthy individuals, but also from unplanned events and natural disasters.

Any company is vulnerable, hackers don’t care about how big or how small you are. If they find an open door, they will come in and help themselves to your data. A hack can cost thousands of pounds to fix and in many cases it means your customers will desert you. A hack can also generate extremely high levels of stress and anxiety in staff, customers and management, leading to a dramatic drop off in productivity and sales.

What is the Malvern Cyber Security Group? MCSG is a collaboration of companies all based in Malvern that offer practical and affordable protection for businesses of all sizes that depend on the internet or store sensitive customer or employee data electronically on their systems.

What companies are included in the group? The three main companies behind the group are borwell, 3SDL and Encription – all companies which work to help protect us all from cyber-attack at home and abroad.

Why did you set up the group? The group’s aim is to help businesses to work effectively and securely in the face of increasing cyber threats by drawing on their joint experiences.

What does the group do? The group all have different expertise and know the risks that businesses could face in terms of Cyber Security, whether it is fraud, data theft or just online vandalism. They offer advice and support in preventing your businesses from being affected by unauthorised users or hackers.

What tips do you have for businesses to improve their Cyber Security? Tips to improve your online security include: n Determine your business risk by commissioning a risk assessment n Arrange for a ‘Penetration Test’ to check your IT systems n Train your staff to be ‘on guard’ and more alert n Reduce your use of media such as CD-ROMs and memory sticks n Send email attachments ‘zipped up’ with a password n Keep up-to-date with Windows updates and anti-virus software For more information about Cyber Security visit: www.mcsg.co.uk

Why is Cyber security so important? Cyber crime is now the highest cause of business failure and costs many businesses thousands each year. A recent well known example is, Sony, Playstation who were fined £250,000 by the Information Commissioner and lost lots of subscribers after the personal details of millions of gamers, including passwords and credit card numbers were leaked online. Most companies who trade online close down within a year of being hacked. The criminals aren’t picky, any business, can be targeted directly or simply caught in the cross-fire.
