The last two years have been an uncertain time for many businesses, with political and economic turbulence caused by currency fluctuations, rising costs, and the potential implications of Brexit. We now have a new government, and we will continue to engage with local MPs around the key themes in our Chamber Manifesto which affect businesses day to day. The last month has seen many other developments in Herefordshire and Worcestershire including a visit from the Maryland Cyber delegation to the Midlands. The visit began with the prestigious Info Security Europe 2017 event and included two business events at Stanbrook Abbey and QinetiQ. The visit was a great opportunity to promote investment opportunities in the cyber sector and has already created business enquiries in the local area, culminating in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the US and the UK. I was pleased to welcome over 50 businesses to the Queen’s Awards Presentation event last month to hear from previous winners and encourage more businesses to enter the Awards. The event featured inspiring speakers from Kudos Blends Ltd and The Smart Actuator Company Ltd and we look forward to holding a similar event in Herefordshire next year. Tourism businesses in Herefordshire and Worcestershire have until Friday 7 July to apply for the Tourism Awards for Excellence. These Awards are a great opportunity for local businesses to raise their profile and be put forward for the VisitEngland Awards with the opportunity to gain national recognition. Business growth is something that all companies want to achieve, whatever their size or sector. In this edition of Business Direction we interview Nick Grey, Owner of Gtech, about his journey to becoming a world expert in the field of cordless innovation. We also speak to the University of Worcester, Sutcliffe & Co, RRA Architects and Central Roofing about their stories of growth. Sharon sharons@hwchamber.co.uk

Gowling WLG has introduced new ways of promoting and interviewing candidates, while new starters are welcomed with a new refreshed
on-boarding programme. Partner Andrew Manning Cox said: “We are delighted to be listed as a Best Workplace once again. Maintaining our “master status” is an outstanding achievement and to increase our ranking is fantastic news.” www.gowlingwlg.com/en/ united-kingdom

LOCAL IT COMPANY ATTAINS CYBER CERTIFICATION STATUS ITechIT Limited is pleased to become a Certification Body for both the Government Standard of Cyber Security for Businesses ‘Cyber Essentials’, and the IASME Gold Governance Standard. Very few companies in the country have attained this level of Cyber Security. ‘Cyber Essentials’ is a Government backed Certification scheme that sets out a required standard for Cyber Security suitable for businesses. This scheme has five security controls that can prevent around 80% of Cyber Attacks. ITechIT is an IASME Certification Body whereby they can technically advise businesses on how they can reach the Cyber Essentials Certification Standards. The business will then be credited with the Official ‘Cyber Essentials’ Certification. ITechIT also offers businesses ongoing Managed IT Support and will put in place the measures required to help prevent Cyber-attacks. www.itechit.co.uk

GENERAL ELECTION SEES MORE UNCERTAINTY FORCED ON BUSINESS COMMUNITY The last few months in politics have signalled a turbulent period ahead for local businesses. The election result, a hung parliament, adds even more pressure and uncertainty on businesses who have already dealt with so much in the last two years. It is vital that politicians, from all parties, come together and support the businesses during this decisive moment in our future history, where we make or break Brexit. Meanwhile, here at home in the two counties the Chamber will continue to engage with local MPs around the key themes in our Chamber Manifesto. These aims must be achieved over the course of the next parliament in order for our business community to flourish and succeed even further. Sophia Haywood, Policy Manager at H & W Chamber, said: “These results place even more uncertainty on our local business community, who have already persevered through recent
years of political and economic turbulence. Businesses are already grappling with currency fluctuations, rising costs, and the potential impacts of Brexit. It is vital there is a swift formation of a functioning government to build business confidence and our wider economic prospects ahead of the EU negotiations. Just as businesses come together in difficult times, so should our politicians.” Dr Adam Marshall, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, said: “After two long years of elections, referenda and wider uncertainty, many businesses were doing their best to ignore the noise of politics – up until today. The formation of a workable administration that can give voters and businesses confidence around economic management must be the immediate priority. Whilst companies have for many months done their best to screen out political noise in order to focus on their own operations, this result will prove much harder for UK businesses to ignore.”

ELECTION DEBATE GETS COUNTY BUSINESSES TALKING The Chamber, in association with the FSB, hosted an election debate on key business issues on Friday 26 May at Hereford Football Club. The event brought together around fifty delegates, who joined a panel of parliamentary candidates and party representatives from across the region to have their say on what they see as priorities for Herefordshire. The Hustings event for Worcestershire was unable to go ahead due to the suspension of political campaigning around that time.

The discussion was lively and lots of businesses had questions to ask the panel which consisted of; Ellie Chowns (Green Party), Jim Kenyon (Independent), Jesse Norman (Conservatives), Lucy Hurds (Liberal Democrats) and Steve Hancorn (Labour Party). Panelists had the opportunity to give an opening statement and closing statement, and in between took questions from the floor. This approach allowed the real focus to be on business owners and managers, who face barriers to growth every day. Hot topics on the day included; skills and labour market shortages, infrastructure, and Brexit. These concerns form key parts of the Chamber Manifesto 2017 which highlights the biggest issues for businesses in the two counties. SUPPLY CHAIN SUCCESS
Ben Mannion, Director at Hewett Recruitment
In the modern day factory, the notion of nipping to the stockroom to get some parts or materials is long gone. We now live in the world of Industrial Vending Machines, where a key code or fob gives users access to what they need and then automatically orders new stock when required via “the cloud”. One of the original pioneers of this technology was US Company, Apex Supply Chain Technologies. Fast forward from the launch in 1991 and they now have automated dispensing systems spanning the globe, across industries including transportation, healthcare, retail, mining, MRO, PPE and asset management. With more than 100,000 devices deployed in more than 40 countries on 6 continents, and a client base that includes the likes of 3M, P&G and GE, Apex really are cornering the marketing in smart dispensing technology. Effective training and recruitment are an important part of any business, but for Apex Supply Chain Technologies they form an integral aspect of their future growth plans. The European Headquarters of Apex are based in Whittington, with an additional warehousing facility in Blackpole, and the company now employ 45 people across both sites. These employees cover a wide range of positions, from project management, sales, finance and customer service through to service engineers, IT support and senior management. Being able to recruit across such a variety of roles – some with very technical requirements – can present challenges. Furthermore, engaging and developing existing staff members is a vital element to the success of a growing business.
012
Hewett Recruitment were appointed by Apex in early 2016 to source a new Operations Director to support the organisations growth and development. After an in depth search and selection process, Jamie Pratt was successfully identified and began in his new role August 2016. Since then Jamie’s remit has expanded further to that of VP / Director of EU Operations, whilst Hewett has successfully recruited for a number of requirements including Application Specialist, Customer Support, Technical Specialist and Field Service Engineer. Jamie at Apex then identified that as a consequence of Apex’s rapid growth they had a number of staff that required some training in two key areas – time management and man management. Hewett Recruitment were able to refer Jamie to one of its trusted training partners, Whatwhenwhyhow Ltd, and Lucy Barkas met with Jamie on several occasions. Following the values of Hewett – building relationships and tailoring a service for individual clients – Lucy has
now created a bespoke programme for Apex to address these training needs. Jamie Pratt commented, “Hewett have been a valuable recruitment resource to partner Apex throughout this busy period of expansion and I have no doubt that the relationship will continue throughout the foreseeable months.” “It’s not unusual for our candidates to become our clients of the future, and this is certainly the case with Jamie” explained Ben Mannion, Director of Hewett Recruitment. “It’s been great developing our working relationship with Apex through Jamie, whilst also being able to add value in other areas, such as facilitating the introduction to Lucy at Whatwhenwhyhow Ltd.”

How can IT encourage growth within your business? In business, there is always room for growth. This could be driving more sales to expand your current customer database and revenue. You might be looking at new offices/units to expand your product range and offering. You might even be looking to grow your workforce to help run your business more efficiently. But what are the key influences that can affect the growth within your business? How can you pin point where you need to focus your time, energy and money to encourage the growth you desire? What might be obvious is that customer relationships, business and sales strategies, management and communication all form a part of a business’ successful growth. What might not be so clear is that your technology plays a huge part in each of the influential factors. IT is the absolute backbone to every business. Without it, our day-to-day processes would be similar to manual labour and we’d probably all still be using pigeon-mail! With the right system that works for your company and colleagues, IT can be extremely beneficial to the growth you need – whatever the area. It can speed up and improve processes, assist with your communications and give you a robust and reliable infrastructure to enable you to work productively and efficiently. At Minster, we’ve put a few pointers together that can help any business make the most of their IT system and grow more effectively:
Data & CRM You may already be aware of ‘The big data trend’ at the moment, which is a result of the increase in data being stored by businesses. As well as having a system that is user-friendly, you also need to ensure you have a system you can rely on to store the ever-expanding quantity of data that your business holds. CRM (customer relationship management) systems are ideal for holding key information about customers, suppliers and prospects. Let’s face it, everyone wants their jobs to be as easy and as efficient as possible, and to have information on a contact at your fingertips enables you to get on with nurturing those important relationships!
Telephony Strong communication both internally and externally is another huge factor that can affect how a company further develops their growth. By continuing to use traditional phone lines, businesses are losing out on the benefits of a more interactive, cost-effective service like VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephony. We implement and support 3CX (a VoIP system) and our customers find it much more productive and professional than traditional phone systems. It also gives further flexibility to a work force by enabling them to be available on their office extension even when they are out of the office. We might not be lucky enough to work on a beautiful beach in the Maldives all year but at least if we get the opportunity, 3CX will allow us to appear in the office to our customers and suppliers! We recommend VoIP to any business looking to expand and rate it that highly that we use it ourselves!
Business Direction published by Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce
Security Security and backup software such as Sentinel is often dismissed, however this is your hidden gem when it comes to consistently developing your business. A secure system will help to ensure there are no setbacks by any unexpected system failures. It protects the most vital features such as sensitive data and financial information, allowing your company to continue to focus on development and growth.
Growth Through IT – BITO Case Study Minster have recently assisted BITO Storage Systems with a major office move. We implemented SAP Business One ERP system which has enabled BITO to improve stock control and other critical processes to help the business develop. We have also assisted BITO with their cyber security, telephone and communications network and hardware. Since assisting BITO with their office move and implementing SAP Business One, they have gone on to record sales of £16 million, a great example of how IT is the core to business growth.
Undoubtedly, the goal for most businesses is to grow or at least be as efficient as possible. At Minster, we advise that you include your IT infrastructure in to your business development strategy so you have strong foundations to work from. It is a good idea to have a look at ERP systems so that almost all aspects of your business can be taken care of from one complete software solution.
If you’d like to discuss further or have any concerns, please feel free to contact Minster on 01562 68211 or email sales@minstermicro.co.uk 013

PUT YOUR GREATEST ASSET IN SAFE HANDS Helping businesses to make the most of their innovation and intellectual property (IP) is the focus for Harrison Clark Rickerbys’ commercial department, bringing together all the specialist skills needed to keep clients’ most valuable assets safe and also help them to develop. Innovation and business growth can be driven by intellectual property – not only a business’s ideas and product developments, but its customer database and insights. Protecting those assets is vital, especially when trading abroad and building on them is often key to growing a business. The department, led by Robert Capper, make the process easier for clients by bringing together all the traditionally separate types of IP; for example, patents, trademarks, copyright and licences would previously have been handled by different experts and would have required several meetings for each step, accompanied by the corresponding expense. Rob Cobley, a technology partner in the team, said: “Clients usually come to us for something specific, such as a patent; we help them with that issue and we ask about their other IP – they may have designs or brands which need protecting, for instance. We can carry out an IP audit so that clients know that they are thoroughly protected in the UK and abroad – we want to help them maximise their business and maximise the benefit they get from their innovations.”
014
Trading abroad has its pitfalls – in some countries, local companies will be given preference when bidding for a contract, and in others, it is vital, for instance, to have your trademark registered there in order to protect it. But the team works with partners all over the world so that it understands different markets and their needs. Robert Capper said: “We have a thoroughly commercial approach and offer value for money – a patent attorney could cost a client tens of thousands of pounds just for one aspect of IP protection, whereas we target the areas which clients really need and, in doing so, are more affordable for clients. For instance, registering a trademark worldwide is often unnecessary when a client is perhaps only trading in the EU; Rob and the team take a very balanced approach.”
from those who see that they have a valuable asset and want to take advantage of it. Scams are becoming more common, with firms being warned that their trademarks are due for renewal or that someone in China is trying to register their domain name - Rob Cobley said: “It is important that people understand that their intellectual property is their major asset, and they need to look after it. The sooner they act, the easier it will be for the company to grow and prosper in new markets.” Robert Capper can be contacted at rcapper@hcrlaw.com or on 01905 744814 Rob Cobley can be contacted at rcobley@hcrlaw.com or on 01905 744806.
Because IP encompasses all the data which gives you a competitive advantage - your brand, logos, designs, company name and products - it affects firms of all kinds in every sector, from manufacturers to artists and from brewers to software developers; all are in need of IP protection

Haines Watts’ For Love of Money study looks in depth at what it means to run a business, revealing the wealth, spending habits, financial security, motivations and concerns of the UK business owner
“Many employers often feel fearful and uncertain about managing the disciplinary or grievance process correctly and in line with the ACAS Code of Practice” explained Elaine Hedley, a Chartered Member of the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development).

The processes involved can be perceived as complex and time-consuming and the fear of getting it wrong may sometimes result in issues not being dealt with effectively or at all. Effective management requires ‘reasonable’ management. The ACAS Code’s minimum standards covers various aspects of ‘reasonable’ management including trying to resolve the issue/s informally first, considering mediation as a resolution option, ensuring any issue is thoroughly and independently investigated, giving an employee appropriate notice of a disciplinary or grievance hearing, ensuring employees’ are provided with the right to be accompanied and - of course - the right to appeal against any decision made, if they feel the decision was unfair or that the processes were not followed correctly. The ‘dangers’ associated with not managing disciplinary or grievances processes correctly can include unfair or constructive dismissal claims, an increase in settlement agreements, associated financial costs, negative public relations, reduced morale and motivation, increased employee turnover and reduced retention, further associated costs, and a damaged employer brand.

HEREFORDSHIRE LAW FIRM CONTINUES TO GROW
Brian Evans
The strong performance of the local economy has been reflected in a Herefordshire law firm reporting its best-ever financial figures. Lanyon Bowdler’s turnover increased by more than nine per cent to £10.4 million in the past year and managers at the firm say they are looking forward to consolidating further in the Herefordshire area. Managing partner, Brian Evans, said the 2016-17 financial year saw particularly strong growth in corporate and commercial, commercial property, planning, education, personal injury and clinical negligence services. Brian said: “As the theme of this issue of Business Direction is growth, it seems fitting to be able to report a nine per cent increase in the firm’s turnover after a successful year. “We are delighted with the continued success of the firm, and are particularly pleased with our development in Herefordshire. “Following our merger with Beaumonts, we now have newly-refurbished offices in Offa Street in the centre of Hereford, as well as in Bromyard. “The level of expertise and experience in our Hereford team is impressive, with specialists across all areas, from corporate to commercial property to private client and family law, so we really do cover the whole range of legal services.” Lanyon Bowdler’s corporate and commercial team has also reported an impressive set of figures, with corporate deals topping £110 million over the past 12 months.
Gráinne Walters
Laurence Lucas
Gráinne Walters, head of the corporate department, said the mood amongst businesses in Herefordshire was upbeat.
A new partner, Laurence Lucas, has also joined the firm in the commercial property department.
“Despite the continued uncertainty over Brexit, and of course the snap General Election, there has been a renewed appetite for growth from businesses across Herefordshire and the Marches,” she said.
Laurence said he was delighted to join Lanyon Bowdler after working in commercial property since 1987, most recently as a partner at Willans LLP in Cheltenham.
“Over the last year the team has been instructed on many corporate transactions including, in particular, a large number of business sales and purchases. “These types of transactions, and at this volume, is evident of a strong level of confidence in the economy in Herefordshire and further afield.” Aside from corporate transactions, Lanyon Bowdler’s corporate and commercial team also assists businesses with their day to day legal needs including preparing and advising on commercial contracts and trading documentation. Meanwhile, the firm is continuing to expand its team of lawyers, with a new legal specialist, Abbie Pritchard-Hooper, joining the planning team as it sees a rise in demand for specialist advice on planning and development issues. The education team has been bolstered by the arrival of consultant Emma Swann, who has more than 15 years’ experience of dealing in education law. Lanyon Bowdler is the only firm ranked outside Birmingham for education work in the West Midlands by the independent legal directory, Legal 500 UK, and provides specialist legal support for a number of schools and academies across Herefordshire.

“There has been an impressive level of investment into Hereford in recent times, with large organisations like the University of Wolverhampton making a firm commitment to the area,” he said. “The University of Wolverhampton’s £9 million Centre for Cyber Security being built at the Skylon Park Enterprise Zone is very exciting, as is the Hereford University New Model in Technology and Engineering. “Hereford really does feel like a city on the up and I am delighted to be able to play my part in helping businesses grow and create more jobs for local people.” Managing partner, Brian Evans, added: “It has been a really positive year and we are committed to continuing to provide the best legal expertise to clients in Herefordshire during the next 12 months. “It has been particularly pleasing to see how much work we are now getting from the local area which might otherwise have gone to bigger firms in cities such as Birmingham. “People are realising that they can get just as high a level of expertise but delivered by warm, friendly and accessible lawyers right here in Herefordshire.” For more information, visit www.lblaw.co.uk or call 0800 294 5916.

BIGINTERVIEW
THE RISE AND RISE OF NICK GREY Nick Grey’s story is the classic example of an inventor who started out small working from home. The creativity he exhibited in those early days led to the formation of what is now one of the UK’s fastest-growing companies. However, success has not come easy and the Worcestershire businessman has had to endure plenty of setbacks on the way to running a company that employs 160 people from its Worcestershire base. Nick's story began when he resigned his position as Manager of Engineering at a vacuum manufacturer and, armed with just enough savings to last eighteen months and working from his home in Worcestershire, he created Grey Technology Limited to develop a cordless sweeper in 2001. He said: “At the time, everything was going cordless. Drills had switched from corded to cordless, the old corded kettle had gone and it was clear to me where the trend was going. However, at that time cordless vacuums did exist but they were only for spot cleaning, no one had designed one with whole-home cleaning in mind. So I set out to develop one. “I’m not sure I would say that I have always been an inventor but I have always been interested in how things worked. I always felt that machines talk to me, I’m fascinated by them. ‘As a child, I would take things apart and put them back together and I would love to find things that were broken and fix them. I remember the satisfaction of repairing an old lawn mower that was in our garage. It had belonged to my grandfather and hadn’t been used for years.” The big challenge Nick had to overcome in 2001 with his idea for a whole-home cordless cleaner was making the batteries last for an hour but still generating enough cleaning power. Having solved the problems in 2002 he revealed the world’s first cordless power sweeper. Initially, it was not marketed under his company’s name, but rather sold to companies in America, Australia and Europe under different names. However, as the company grew Nick moved on to launch products under the Gtech brand. During this second phase of the company’s development, Gtechs were sold in big-name
028
stores but Nick said: “I became more and more aware that we were being governed by short-term concerns. In addition, the crash of 2008 hit retail hard. “We were being asked to produce devices for ever cheaper costs, it was all about what the retailers wanted, so I put my foot down and we changed the way we worked.” The change was to design products that Nick himself would want to use. This would be the first cordless vacuum cleaner to match the cleaning performance of a mains one – the Gtech AirRam. But there was a problem. Nick said: “Retailers are not good at selling innovative products. Anything that looks different tends to sit on the shelf and get dusty. I had saved up a million pounds for an advertising campaign on the television but it didn’t go well. “The store staff were confused about the AirRam and while the TV had generated a lot of interest people were not convinced enough to buy. The answer was to use longer form advertising in newspapers, we managed to make our money back and then scale up and develop more new products. We are really grateful to all our loyal customers." Those products included further vacuum cleaners, lawnmowers and electric bicycles and today Grey Technology Ltd has sold more than 22 million products in 19 countries, employs staff in the UK, United States and China and has just moved into new premises in Warndon, Worcestershire. Plenty of accolades have come the company’s way. Gtech won the Insider Media Limited award for innovation in 2011, Gtech’s AirRAM vacuum cleaner has
been reviewed in national newspapers and scooped a Queen’s Award for Innovation in 2015. The Bissell Versus cordless vacuum was a winner in its 2009 VIP (Very Innovative Products) awards and the company won the Chamber's High Growth Business of the Year Award in 2014. The Sunday Times named Gtech as Britain’s second fastest growing company in 2016, and this year the company was named in London Stock Exchange’s 1000 Companies To Inspire Britain. Although the company goes from strength to strength, its CEO still has to wrestle with the challenges that come with rapid growth. Nick said: “We are very conscious that our growth has to be sustainable. When the dollar realigned in the Summer of 2016, for example, our turnover was not affected but our bottom line was. We were strong enough to continue growing and take a long term approach to adjusting to the change with the introduction of new products. “We are always aware that other people can copy our ideas but there is not much you can do to prevent that happening. It is the way design works, you see something impressive and see how you can integrate it into your own product. When we see people doing that to us, it’s a compliment really.” And his tip to other businesses who may be eying growth? “Try to be free of debt. I hate being in debt. It may seem like a good idea to go to a bank or venture capitalist but I think learning how to keep a company liquid is a key business skill. “Also, pay attention to detail in what you are producing. Ask yourself ‘would I be happy if my grandmother had paid good money for this?’”

KEEPING GROWTH SUSTAINABLE Growth is a welcome thing for business. It breeds confidence and allows companies to create jobs. However, it brings with it many challenges. BD examines some of the dos and don’ts.
GETTING THE SECURITY RIGHT One important thing that rapidly growing companies need to bear in mind is to continue doing the things that allowed them to grow, particularly when it comes to cyber security. That is the message from Duncan Sutcliffe of Worcester-based Sutcliffe & Co Insurance Brokers, who is a member of the Chamber’s Area Council. Duncan is a big supporter of the Government’s Cyber Essentials programme which is offered by the Chamber with leading accreditation body IASME.

PLACING PEOPLE AT THE HEART OF GROWTH An example of a company experiencing growth is Hereford-based Central Roofing, which attributes its success to recruiting the right staff and ensuring high standards in its work. James Broady, Managing Director, said: “Our blue-chip clients look for the highest levels of quality, from managing health and safety on site to construction standards. We work on large construction projects, from schools and hospitals to power stations and factories, so a safety-first reputation is everything. We see plenty of repeat business, so we’re doing something right.” Central achieves this by employing its people full-time, in an industry where sourcing sub-contractors at the start of each project is standard practice. James says that the approach allows it to offer greater skill levels, standards of workmanship and control over health and safety. The strategy, supporting a recent management buy-out (MBO) with the help
030
of Haines Watts, has seen Central Roofing expand from an annual turnover of about £1.5 million in 2000 to an anticipated £20 million in 2017. The company has high levels of retention among its people because, James says, the business has always aimed to offer them an opportunity to progress. He said: “It does mean we’re a bit ‘top heavy’, but once you find good people, you hang onto them. “We try to involve key people in strategy meetings, for instance, so everyone understands our goals and objectives. I’ve heard criticism that we’re too open with this strategic information, but I disagree. It means everyone knows where we’re going and how we’re going to get there.” Following the MBO, the company underwent a restructure and James said: “We have been able to reward those who are at the top of their field with a slice of the action, and meet their long-term goals.”
The scheme consists of five main elements which can prevent 80% of cyber attacks. Duncan said: “There is a danger that fast growing or rapidly changing companies neglect security but fast moving and pressurised work environments can make them vulnerable to fraud and crime. “It is important to take steps to prevent this because a business trades on its reputation; data breaches and fraud damage that reputation. “Businesses are reliant upon communication and data and an inability to communicate or access data will stop a business trading. “In addition, the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) put huge new responsibility for the secure handling of data. “Becoming involved in Cyber Essentials helps companies prevent breaches and makes sense, not least because Cyber Essentials certification is increasingly mandated in supply chains. “Companies should never overlook the need for risk management strategies, procedures to ensure business continuity and disaster recovery and the taking out of insurance for when something does go wrong.”

USE AN EXPERT TO HELP GROW YOUR BUSINESS computers, more IT infrastructure and, therefore, significant investment and a firm grip on cash flow is essential. Mark Powles believes that the necessary adaptations to accommodate the growth were only possible due to the commitment of the whole team to embrace the changes and with a structured management process.
Mark Powles, Managing Director at RRA Architects
RRA was set up more than 30 years ago in Hereford. Over the years the business grew slowly, but surely, and developed a reputation for design-led architecture and the ability to gain planning permissions in difficult sites by designing sympathetically to the landscape.
the next level, managing director Mark Powles realised he would need external assistance to achieve this.
Over the past six years, as its reputation grew and clients came from further afield, the business expanded to include offices in London and Cheltenham; RRA has recorded an increase of approximately 50% turnover in the past 12 months alone.
Rapid expansion such as RRA has experienced brings its own challenges. Within a service industry such as architecture, this tends to be a requirement to employ more staff. In the past six months RRA has employed five new staff. Of course, more staff means more desks, more space, more

He found the perfect match in Mark Harris of The Business Company, who has a background in working as a ‘Business Angel’ operating at board level as both a trouble-shooter and a strategist.
The process put in place a structure which has also given new opportunities to the team and a clear promotion strategy for personal growth. As a result, the whole company has been reinvigorated and incentivised. As a direct result of employing this method to control growth, RRA is already looking at new markets and at further growth, and this has already led to the introduction of a Shrewsbury office completing the A49/M4 corridor of office locations. Mark Powles said: “Looking back over the past few years, but particularly the last 12 months, I am still amazed and very proud of our achievements, none of which would have been possible without the outstanding loyalty, dedication and sheer talent of the team at RRA, including our new Non-Exec Director Mark Harris.”
UNIVERSITY CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF GROWTH This year, the University of Worcester has been celebrating its 70th anniversary, during which time it has educated thousands of professionals and inspired generations with a love of learning. From humble beginnings as an Emergency Teacher Training College, established after World War II, the University has been transformed in recent years under a vision to provide outstanding, inclusive education and opportunities for all. Since being awarded full university title in 2005, Worcester has enjoyed sustained growth in student applications and numbers and significant improvements in student completion and achievement. Over the past ten years, the University has grown greatly in scope and scale. A decade ago, it operated from a single site in St John’s. Now the University has a City Campus, centred in the beautifully refurbished buildings of the
former Worcester Royal Infirmary, which is home to its Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs-accredited Business School, along with other striking buildings, including the multi-award winning Hive, Europe’s first fully-integrated university and public library, and the University of Worcester Arena, a beacon for inclusive sport. Work is also currently under way to develop the former County Furnishings building in Castle Street into art facilities and plans to develop new halls of residence close to the St John’s Campus.

All of these physical developments build on the University’s ethos of inclusion, which extends beyond the physical growth to all aspects of its work, including staff recruitment. The University has been a leader in the Higher Education sector in recruiting a higher than average proportion of women in senior roles - 61% against a national average of 29% - and the pay gap between male and female academic staff is just 0.4% compared to 9.1% sector wide.

CYBERSECURITY
STAYING CYBER SECURE IN A CHANGING WORLD
As digital technology continues to shape the business landscape, bringing with it a wave of new opportunity and resources, these technological changes also continue to bring an alarming host of new threats. Businesses today face a barrage of daily cyber attacks, from spam and phishing to ransomware and malware, risks that are growing at a rapid and alarming rate. With an increasing number of high profile organisations having made headlines due to significant data breaches and security failures, many smaller businesses who previously believed they were too small to be targeted, are now realising that in reality they have never been more at risk. We only have to look at the recent WannaCry ransomware attack to understand the significance of a cyber attack, which saw 150 countries and tens of thousands of computers and networks affected, simply because they were unpatched and exposed to the internet. Richard Lane, Managing Director of managed services provider EBC Group comments ‘‘small businesses may think they have nothing to worry about, however these threats do not discriminate based on company size. Whether you’re an accountancy firm, manufacturer, retailer or any businesses, no matter the size or industry, you are at risk.’’ He adds ‘’what SME’s commonly fail to realise is the goldmine of customer and employee data
032
they hold, from online banking credentials to social security numbers, making them an attractive target.’’ Businesses that frequently use the Internet, as part of their day-to-day operations without adequate protection will almost certainly acquire some form of malware or computer virus, with more than 317 million new pieces created last year alone. In addition, businesses that fail to address cyber security put themselves at risk of major financial loss and damage, which could prove detrimental to the stability of their operations. As cybercrime continues to make front-page news, the fallout from such attacks as ‘WannaCry’ have left many considering the state of their own cyber security and what can be done to improve their existing systems. Often cyber attacks are successful because businesses are using out-dated systems and processes that haven’t been updated or maintained. Too often a business will implement a ‘fit and forget’ policy, where once they have purchased anti-virus software, software patches and firewalls, they simply install and neglect. This means regular checks and updates don’t take place, and eventually programmes will stop providing the sufficient protection needed against evolving threats. Businesses must now look to address and review their existing cyber security, via the aid of strategic security solutions if they are to remain secure and safe. A good cyber security company will help provide the correct solutions, policies and procedures to identify and reduce the risk of an attack as well as providing a Disaster
Recovery (DR) strategy. Faisal Iqbal, Technical Director at EBC Group comments “As cyber-attacks become harder to prevent it is also important that businesses implement a robust data backup and DR solution. A true DR solution will replicate your systems, applications and data to a secure datacentre, which means in the event of a disaster the systems can be back online quickly, with minimal disruption.” He adds “As a total solutions provider EBC Group provide multi-layered network security and disaster recovery solutions that add that vital layer of protection to companies of any size. EBC Group partner with a number of leading global security experts, including Kaspersky Lab and WatchGuard, which allows them to provide the very latest in cyber security solutions.“ Businesses across Hereford and Worcester are realising the benefits of properly implemented and monitored cyber security solutions. Rebecca Widdowson, Managing Partner at Hallmark Hulme comments ‘Cyber security is massively important to a business like ours. We hold a lot of personal and confidential information about our clients; we also handle substantial sums of money through out our business on a daily basis. Businesses like ours are seen as a soft target to criminals. EBC Group has provided us with a series of firewalls and anti-virus protection as well as Disaster Recovery solution which means that our info and client data is much more secure and protected from cyber criminals.” For more information about cyber security visit www.ebcgroup.co.uk/cyber-security or call 0121 585 4422

CYBERSECURITY
CYBER ATTACKS - IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO? You can’t turn on the TV, pick-up a newspaper, or read a social media post without stumbling across a story involving a data breach of some kind. The sad state of affairs is that malicious attacks on computers, networks, and increasingly, mobile devices, are becoming far too common. You may think that it is just big businesses that are being targeted, but statistics compiled for gov.uk show that over the last 12 months more than half of all small to medium-size businesses (1-250 employees) had cyber security breaches or attacks, and over a third of these stated the breaches stopped staff carrying out their day-to-day work. We cannot stress enough the importance of doing everything you can to prevent this from happening to your business. But, should the worst happen, we also encourage you to ensure you have adequate systems in place to restore any potential lost data. Here are some things you can do in order to help reduce the likelihood of an attack: Antivirus - at the very least, you should have an antivirus product installed on your devices. As for which product to use, there’s not really a right or wrong answer. There are a lot of free products available, but obviously their functionality can be somewhat limited. For our own customers we recommend Kaspersky as it covers everything well and doesn’t impact on performance. Once antivirus is installed you need to ensure it is updated. New threats are being created all of the time
034
and so it is imperative that the product is kept up-to-date in order to offer the best level of protection. Program updates - ensure you regularly update your programs when patches or fixes are released. Security issues are constantly being found in programs that we use every day. It is also worth making sure, if you are a Windows user, that Automatic Updates are turned on. This way if any vulnerabilities are found within the software, fixes are automatically applied. Passwords - passwords can be a real pain, and unfortunately a lot of people are quite lazy when it comes to their creation. ‘1234’, ‘password’ and ‘qwerty’ are always in the top 10 most used lists each year! Not only are people using weak passwords, they are also using them on more than one site. We are constantly reading about different sites being hacked, so if you are using the same password across multiple sites it only takes one of those sites to be compromised to make your personal information potentially vulnerable.
Business One specialists and were founded in 2001” becomes “IaSAPB1S&wfi2001”. That may look impossible to remember by the letters, numbers and symbols, but if you type them as you say the phrase (not out loud!) then eventually it becomes very easy. Try it with something more personal to you, based on a team you support, a film or television programme you like or any other sentence you find memorable. The trick then is to create these types of passwords for every site you use. Of course, this may then become complicated, but luckily help is at hand in the form of password managers. Password managers, such as LastPass, assist in generating, storing, and retrieving complex passwords from an encrypted database. You create one master password and the program then creates individual passwords for all of the other sites you use. If you have any questions, or would like to discuss any points raised in this article, please call us on 01905 758900 or email security@integratech.co.uk.
So what can we do in order to create strong, memorable passwords? A good method is to use a sentence or “pass phrase”. For example: “Integratech are SAP

WHY A STRONG RISK CULTURE IS SO IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESSES In an age when businesses face so many threats, a culture which advocates strong yet sensible risk management within organisations is becoming increasingly important. That is the message from Alan Stenhouse, from AST Risk Consultancy & Training Services Ltd. Alan says that all companies have to take risk in order to grow but the key is having a culture in which the level of risk that is acceptable is understood and where all staff are equally responsible for managing it. He said: “All organisations need to take risks to achieve their objectives. Those that manage the risks well stand to achieve great benefits but organisations with inappropriate risk cultures can find themselves allowing activities that are at odds with the ethos of the business. “At best a poor strategy will hamper
business performance, at worst it will lead to serious reputational and financial damage. Poor risk cultures are frequently found at the root of organisational scandals and collapses. “Risk management needs to run throughout the company but it starts at the top with a strong lead from the board and senior management. “Key to a good risk culture is that information flows constantly both ‘up and down’ the organisation, event reporting and whistle-blowing are encouraged and everyone seeks to learn from mistakes/ near misses without fear of blame. “However, there still has to be a strong sense of accountability. Appropriate risk-taking behaviours should be rewarded and encouraged with inappropriate behaviours challenged and addressed.
How would you describe the Risk culture in your organisation? Does this need to change to provide a greater chance of success? Don’t delay, contact AST Risk Consultancy & Training Services for support now. Alan can be contacted at Web: www.astriskconsultancy.com E mail: as@astriskconsultancy.com Tel: 07969-050393
“Look at incidents where things went badly wrong and you will usually find that this kind of proactive risk culture did not exist within the organisation involved.”
WHAT IS CYBER INSURANCE? Nearly every business is reliant upon technology and data but this makes us vulnerable. Traditional insurance might cover hardware against fire, flood or theft but it won’t cover what is really vital if your systems are breached or data is lost. Clearly prevention is important, so good cyber security, staff training and accreditations such as Cyber Essentials are crucial. But when things go wrong, insurance should be there to minimise the costs and disruption. This is why cyber insurance is the fastest growing class of insurance. A good cyber policy will cover the costs of both your own losses and third party losses that you may be held responsible for. It will also cover accidental incidents as well as deliberate breaches, be they caused by your own staff or outsiders.
Duncan Sutcliffe, director, Sutcliffe & Co, explains
036
A comprehensive cyber policy will do so much more than present you with a cheque in the event of an incident: it will provide a comprehensive crisis management service including technical and forensic specialists to restore systems and data; legal experts to navigate
compliance and disputes; PR consultants to minimise reputational damage; pay fines and penalties; cover defence costs and damages. Without cyber insurance you would be looking at hiring the equivalent specialists at costs in excess of £500 p/hr each. That is before you even consider the length of time you could be out of action, the reputational harm and the other costs and damages you could face. And don’t think your business is not at risk: if you use computers, email or websites then you are vulnerable. Sutcliffe & Co is an independent insurance broker specialising in business, professional and private clients’ insurance as well as providing assistance with wider risk management. DIY OR HIRE AN EXPERT? For any job out there, you always have two options: do it yourself or hire an expert. Sometimes, the task at hand is so easy or takes so little time, that you just don’t think to hire an expert—making a cup of tea on a morning, for example. But other days, you’re running late or forgot to buy milk, so you nip into the nearest coffee shop and ask an expert to do it for you. Other tasks, of course, are complicated or time consuming enough that your first thought is to hire someone else to do it. Maybe you need to replace the glass in your windscreen or want to add a patio to your garden. Either way, you’re probably going to hire (or at least consult) an expert. The reason is two-fold: 1) the time, 2) the learning curve. If something is complicated, you need to factor in the amount of time, energy, and expense it will take you to learn enough to be able to do it yourself. Similarly, if a job is fairly involved, it will like take up a fair amount of your time, which you’re going to have to pay for anyway—either in time off work or in your leisure time. Another reason, of course, is the experience and expertise an expert brings to the task. They will not only have the tools and knowledge to do it, but they’ve done it enough times that the quality of
the finished product will be higher and they’re less likely to make costly mistakes. So we hire experts to do these complicated and involved jobs. Because you have to pay a price whether you do it or they do…and they’ll be faster and make fewer mistakes. Let’s go back to the idea of putting in a new patio. If you do it yourself, you’ve got to buy all the tools and supplies, watch some YouTube videos, read a few articles, and then spend a whole weekend actually doing it. The finished product looks great, but there are a few bits you had to re-do after finding the best technique. Alternatively, if you hire some experts to do it, the outlay cost is probably higher, but they bring all the tools and supplies, as well as the experience of having installed about 10 patios over the last year. The big day comes and you get to spend the weekend out and about, returning just in time to see a finished patio looking great. There are pros and cons to both. When you DIY, you learn a lot about the process, maybe even enough to do it again down the road or fix any little errors that crop up over the coming years. When you pay for an expert, you may not learn as much, but the finished product is more stable and less likely to have any issues in the future. When it comes to the customisation of our customers’ OpenCRM system, we tend to have three types of projects.
and getting everyone trained up on it. They will rely on our knowledgebase and asking questions of our support team. Type 2s will do much of the customisation themselves, but will do so after paying for a few training sessions and a couple hand-holding sessions to get them feeling confident enough to do so. Type 3s on the other hand, choose to pay us to customise their system and train their staff. They may want to know how the customisation was done, but really they just want to get on with their normal day job and leave the configuration to our experts. All three types end up with a finished product that works for their business and have a similar success rate. They’ve all had to pay some cost, whether it is their own time, our project management rates, or a combination of both. It comes back to that idea of DIY vs expert—there’s a cost either way and it should always be your decision about which you prefer to pay. EXPORT BOOM SET FOR 2017 question we need to know is how many of these companies are contemplating export for the first time and how many need help. Those exporters who are more established and are already trading around the globe need to be preparing for scenarios on post Brexit trade and looking for where new markets may bring faster results for international growth. Companies were initially spooked by Brexit and feared that investment would plunge, but growth was supported by strong consumer spending last year. Economists at the EY Item Club believe the economy will grow by 1.8% this year, in line with 2016’s expansion. That is a big improvement from the 1.3% growth it previously forecast, with rising exports and a strong global economy driving the upgrade.
By Linda Smith, Director of International Trade at Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce Britain is on the verge of an export and spending boom as economists rule out the likelihood of a slowdown this year. Strong global growth combined with the weak pound is expected to send overseas sales soaring, giving businesses the confidence to ramp up investment. As the Director of International Trade here at the Chamber representing Herefordshire and Worcestershire businesses, the main
For those looking to export for the fist time, Trade Missions are a good way to explore new geographies and the potential to diversify into new sectors. The risk is lowered using this immersion into a market with experts, local contacts and introductions which are both credible and supported by the Department for International Trade. Seminars, events and training are all available at a very local level and there are many ways any size of business can take advantage of this knowledge network. Businesses will need to invest in export capacity and in UK supply chains to keep growth going, as well as investing in skills to cope with fewer EU migrants post-Brexit.

PRINT STRATEGY EUROPE, PATRON MEMBER AT H & W CHAMBER, SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE OF USING MONEYCORP “As a company new to invoicing in Euro’s, we have been delighted with the service that we have received from Moneycorp. We work on 30 day payment terms with our customers, which means we have often found that the difference in the rates from invoicing to receiving funds has resulted in a reduction of funds received
due to market movements. Moneycorp have enabled us to lock in our rates so we know exactly the amount we will receive once payments have been made. The online platform is very easy to use and gives us full control over our international payments. They also have a local point of

We traditionally used our bank, and have saved a considerable amount of money since switching to Moneycorp, not only in the rates we receive but also the transaction fee. The transition from using our bank to Moneycorp was very straight forward, and has helped smooth out the process

Andy Medler, who is the local point of contact for Moneycorp also visited our premises on several occasions, and ran through the trading platform to ensure we knew how everything works. SINGLE DOSE RADIOTHERAPY AVAILABLE tissue and areas, such as heart, lungs and ribs, avoid any dosage.
Women with early-stage breast cancer can now undergo a single radiotherapy treatment immediately after surgery, which could take away the need for a daily course of radiotherapy in the weeks after their operation.
Once the tumour has been removed a specially designed balloon-like applicator is placed into the part of the breast where the tumour had been along with a small shield that prevents the spread of radiation. The radiation is then delivered in as little as 10 minutes and the operation finished off as normal. That means when the patient wakes up from their surgery their radiotherapy treatment has been completed.”
Suitable for women aged 50 years or older with early stage breast cancer and tumours no more than 3cm in size, single dose intraoperative radiotherapy (SD-IORT) is carried out while the patient is still under anaesthetic following the removal of the tumour. The procedure is being carried out at Spire South Bank Hospital where Consultant Breast Surgeon Mr Steven Thrush explained that studies of 3,500 women showed the recurrence of breast cancer following SD-IROT was not inferior to a course of conventional External Beam Radiotherapy (EBRT).
Mr Steven Thrush
He said: “The technique involves a machine using a miniaturised X-ray tube that delivers a single, concentrated dose of radiotherapy exactly where the tumour has just been removed. “This means that only the ‘tumour bed’ and a small amount of tissue will be subjected to the radiation, while other
One patient who received the treatment said: “I feel very grateful that I was able to have SD-IORT and that no further radiation was required. It meant that I could put an end point to my treatment as soon as the operation was over. I think it would have been much more difficult for myself and my family if I had to go through daily hospital visits for my radiotherapy treatment. Three weeks after the operation I felt well enough to go to Cornwall for a fortnight’s holiday.”

The café serves delicious food and drink but most importantly provides opportunities for vulnerable people to gain experience in a real working environment by baking, preparing food and serving customers.” www.cbcharteredaccountants.com www.onside-advocacy.org.uk

LASTWORD
The April 2017 Sustainability Forum at Cargill
SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER FOCUS – SUSTAINABILITY It has now been over six months since the Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP), was launched in association with 11 local partners throughout Worcestershire,
WHAT IS BEEP? BEEP is a business support programme funded by the European Regional Development Fund that helps local businesses reduce their energy use and carbon emissions through free onsite energy assessments and grant funding of up to £20 000.
HOW DOES THE PROGRAMME WORK? Interested businesses just need to register for BEEP through Worcestershire Business Central and assuming the business is eligible, an Advisor will arrange to visit the site and conduct an assessment. The Advisor will write a recommendation report and help the business apply for grant funding.
WHAT TYPE OF PROJECTS CAN THE GRANT BE USED FOR? Funded projects include LED lighting, new air compressors, insulation, heating improvements, replacement of old equipment and process efficiency improvements that lead to energy savings. Often a business will receive funding
Herefordshire and Telford and Wrekin. In this time the programme has helped around 120 businesses reduce their energy use and carbon emissions.
for a package of improvements that will dramatically reduce energy bills and therefore their carbon emissions and impact on the environment.
WHY SHOULD BUSINESSES BE CONCERNED ABOUT ENERGY USE, CARBON EMISSIONS AND SUSTAINABILITY? Nowadays it is not just large businesses that should be concerned about their impact on the environment. Increasingly, larger businesses are looking at the sustainability practices of their supply chains and consumers are increasingly aware of environmental issues. As a business, not only will reducing your carbon emissions help boost your profitability and free up capital to spend elsewhere, it can also give you a competitive edge and demonstrate that you are an environmentally responsible company.
WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP A BUSINESS SHOULD TAKE?
Energy Efficiency Advisor Liz Rushton from BEEP explains how the programme works and why businesses should make sustainability a priority.
much energy is used and when it’s being used. Many reasonable sized businesses now have half-hourly meters, the data from which can be obtained for free from your electricity supplier. This data provides a wealth of information and is great for highlighting out of hours consumption which can often be easily reduced. Smaller businesses can begin to understand their energy use by taking regular meter readings and comparing monthly consumption.
HOW CAN BUSINESSES FIND OUT MORE ABOUT BEEP AND SUSTAINABILITY? Interested business should contact Worcestershire Business Central on 01905 677 888 / info@business-central.co.uk to register for BEEP and come along to one of our quarterly BEEP Sustainability Forums, the next of which will be hosted by Oakland International on Thursday 21 September 2017.
The first step in managing energy and carbon emissions is understanding how
