BUSINESS DIRECTION Business Direction, Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce’s full colour bi-monthly publication. Designed and produced by business people for business people. Distributed to 4,000 businesses. The deadline for the 'How green is your business?' edition is the 24th July

Feedback from the Chamber's interactions with over 4,000 companies consistently points towards improving the links between education and business. This will help get young people ready for work and help provide a resolution to the national skills shortage affecting many businesses' recruitment goals. In the first three months of the year, the number of people in employment rose by a staggering 99,000 with the number of self-employed workers also rising by 90,000 to 4.9 million nationally – a new record high. Whilst the UK is celebrating reaching the lowest rates of unemployment since 1974 (3.8%), from June 2019 there were an estimated 837,000 job vacancies in the UK, which is 11,000 more than the year previously. The latest facts and figures only highlight the importance of working together to resolve the skills shortage, ensuring that job vacancies are filled with knowledgeable and trained staff.

Though recruitment is in one way to attract skilled staff, we cannot forget the importance of retaining the employees at the heart of our businesses. The average cost of replacing a worker has now reached £11,000, with the cost only increasing when applied to specialist and skilled positions.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER...CHAMBER BUSINESS AWARDS 2019 Over 650 business people from across the two counties gathered at the University of Worcester Arena on Thursday 4 July to celebrate the Chamber Business Awards 2019, sponsored by FOLK2FOLK. Winners of all 15 categories were congratulated by businesses from across the region, with judges commending finalists for achieving excellence across all categories including innovation, export and technology. The Chamber would like to thank all sponsors for the Chamber Business Awards

RECORD BREAKING BUSINESSES ACCREDITED AT WORCESTERSHIRE WORKS WELL EVENT The Worcestershire Works Well steering group was delighted to welcome a record number of businesses to its bi-annual event held at Hogarths Stone Manor Hotel in May. Worcestershire Works Well (WWW) is a globally recognised free accreditation scheme designed to support businesses to help improve the health and wellbeing of their employees. After winning recognition on the world stage in 2017 at the World Chamber Awards, the scheme has only gone from strength to strength. Taking place during National Mental Health Awareness Week, the half-day event welcomed over 70 attendees to hear from a variety of speakers and to celebrate the 10 local companies receiving their accreditation. Dawn Hardman, Director of HR at the Chamber and member of the WWW steering group, commented: “It was fantastic to welcome a record number of businesses to our recent Worcestershire Works Well bi-annual event. It has been a real honour to watch the scheme continue to grow, and welcome so many new businesses as part of the initiative."

Details of the evening and the full list of finalists can be viewed on our double page special on p40-41.

RUBBING SHOULDERS WITH ROYALTY On Wednesday 29 May, HR Executive, Abigail Robbins, represented the Chamber of Commerce at the prestigious Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. The British Chambers of Commerce receives an annual allocation of tickets from its Patron, Her Majesty the Queen, and this year decided that a selection of tickets would be awarded to younger members of staff from across the Chamber network. The tickets were presented to those who are really making a difference, who deliver great results and always go beyond the call of duty. Abigail was chosen after successfully completing her apprenticeship before continuing to obtain her Masters. Speaking of the event, Abigail commented: “I feel privileged to have been selected as there were so many worthy people that could easily have been nominated. I am extremely grateful that I was able to represent our Chamber at this prestigious event where the Queen and Prince Harry were in attendance. It is a day I will not forget!”

“A DELIGHT TO SEE HEREFORDSHIRE PUNCHING ABOVE ITS WEIGHT” SAYS MAJOR PATRICK DARLING To celebrate the success of the region in this year’s Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, and to encourage even more businesses to join the illustrious list next year, the Chamber was delighted to host its annual Queen’s Award information evening at St Michael’s Hospice on Wednesday 8 May. Due to the popularity of the event, the Chamber then went on to host the first Worcestershire-based event at DRPG in June. Speaking of the success of the events, Major Patrick Darling said: “It is a delight to see Herefordshire punching above its weight. With five winners in the last two years we are certainly showing the rest of Britain what quality, enterprise and innovation exists in Herefordshire. We are well ahead of comparably sized counties. “There are so many more businesses with the right criteria to win a coveted Queen’s Award and I would encourage them to try. The benefits the awards bring to business both outwardly and inwardly are well worth the effort of applying.”

CHAMBERNEWS

BUSINESS DIRECTION, A POWERFUL MEDIUM How does the magazine come together and what exactly is involved? I have taken a step away from my International Trade services pages (having already submitted our articles) and brought out a very important lady from behind the scenes to answer these questions. Business Direction Editor for the past two years, Lucy Allen. Maria: First of all Lucy, congratulations on your work in sourcing, initiating, writing and enabling great content for Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce’s publication, Business Direction. Lucy: Thank you very much. I can’t believe we are at the 50th edition already! Maria: Is BD your only responsibility? Lucy: No, although it is a large part of my role. I am part of a small but effective marketing team and our roles are diverse. My role as ‘PR Executive’ means I contribute to local media, create press releases and I am active and reactive to news events. I also create e-newsletters for the Chamber (including Exit Focus, Business Insight, Herefordshire Roundup and Worcestershire Roundup), and I am proud to be a Time to Change Champion. Maria: We are approaching the deadline for the July/August issue and I can see you focused and working away. Where do the articles originate from? Lucy: Members send in articles or upload stories to the website, and my Chamber colleagues regularly tell me nuggets of good news they hear when out and about and chatting with businesses. I always follow up on my colleague’s feedback, but I also regularly monitor social, digital and traditional media to find leads and explore further. I source Members for opportunities based on articles that I have seen, through my own conversations with businesses and suggestions from my colleagues. In short, if you want to be included, make sure you are letting us know about your news! Maria: What is your favourite type of story?

Lucy Allen with Business Direction over the years

Lucy: Tenacity. Personally, I really enjoy reading about unique ideas and concepts that have gone from drawing board to creation. It’s also great to see success stories about businesses that began in a smaller team and are now winning awards in recognition of their hard work and growth. Maria: It there a limit on the number of articles that can be printed and why? Lucy: Yes, as the publication is free for Members to raise the profile of their businesses and free to the readership, we are reliant on revenue generated by advertising to finance the magazine. Readers may be well-versed with Helen, from Distinctive [publishers], who is equally as passionate about promoting businesses within Business Direction through advertorial! Maria: You have stepped out of the ‘newsroom’ environment of your desk, to chat with BD readers. What are the stages leading up to sign off?

Business Direction published by Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce

Lucy: It is stressful, but I run on positive energy. I take pride in producing a professional and engaging magazine. I also want to honour the stories and give balance to the content included. I give opportunity for contributors to proof their articles prior to submission, but I also proof read, check and edit all appropriate pages. Maria: Once the magazine is signed off and sent to print, how soon does the process start again? Lucy: It’s an ongoing, continual process. I am always looking out for opportunities and encourage Members I meet at events to think about sending me a story – particularly if they haven’t done so before. I feel very fortunate to be able to work closely with so many fantastic businesses to help raise their profile in the two counties. Maria: Thank you for your time Lucy, I had better let you get back to it. *Interview conducted by Maria Harrison

SPELLER METCALFE ANNOUNCED AS CONTRACTOR FOR NEW CENTRE FOR CYBER Speller Metcalfe has been announced as the main contractor for the new £9 million Midlands Centre for Cyber Security, with work due to start on site at the end of this month. Designed by Associated Architects, the centre is a joint venture between the University of Wolverhampton and Herefordshire Council and will be built at Skylon Park in the Hereford Enterprise Zone, part funded through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in conjunction with the Marches LEP Local Growth Fund.

The aim of the centre is to tackle the growing threat of cyber security and the shared facilities will allow private sector businesses to benefit from the university’s networks and expertise as well as make use of the centre’s specialist training rooms and laboratory spaces. The new centre incorporates a dual break-out space and function hall, alongside the main three storey building that houses business suites, innovation rooms, IT workshops and a ‘Cyber Range’ – a cutting edge facility that will defend against the global rise of hacking.

FOCUSONTECHNOLOGY

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION When it comes to technology, every business, large or small, faces the same common problemsimply keep up, or be left behind. For many however, the prospect of digitally transforming their business can seem costly, complex and disruptive. Although your systems may meet your business needs now, any future growth or success could be hindered by the inability to adopt new technologies. Replacing your current systems when they grow tired or break may seem like an easy short term resolve, but in the long run businesses will only suffer as a result of their avoidance to adopt a digital transformation plan. The right digital transformation plan can provide a host of benefits, from reducing costs and time, to improving efficiencies across the business. However, digital transformation is not a single ‘out of the box’ solution and takes time, careful planning, and the right resources. There are plenty of mistakes that can be made when embarking on a transformation journey- here are 5 steps to consider;

08

1. A lack of clear strategic direction will not only make the whole process longer but could also result in spiralling costs. A transformation plan requires strong collaboration and should consider all business needs, with a clear set of goals as the aim. Breaking every process and task into manageable steps will make the overall implementation much more simple. 2. Whilst the technology plays a vital part, it is important that everyone is involved in the process, not just the IT department. When it comes to the day-to-day usability, the technology must work across all departments and at all levels. If the technology is starting to become too complex for the business, be prepared to pause or roll back on steps where serious issues occur. 3. For most businesses who are performing successfully, digital transformation may not seem like a necessity. However a digital transformation should be used to make existing functions and processes more efficient and effective, this enables the business to enhance current systems, add new features and over time change the business step-by-step. 4. Having the right level of knowledge is imperative to the success of your

digital transformation project. Identify any missing skills and address them accordingly, investing in the right skills early in the process will ensure your strategy and plans stay on target. If the right skills aren’t available, you cold look to outsource select resources. 5. When planning, it is important to identify what needs to be upgraded, replaced or reconstructed- once you’re into your transformation any ‘unexpected surprises’ could be both costly and disruptive. Simplifying your infrastructure could be as simple as removing multiple redundant or duplicative services and systems, or moving to cloud based solutions. Digital transformation is not a journey that takes place alone. For those with limited resources Managed Service Providers (MSP’s) can help make the process easier and provide valuable insights into your project. With the help from MSP’s like EBC Group, businesses can be assured that they are getting the best technical services and support. STRUGGLING TO RECRUIT? YOU ARE NOT ALONE... Businesses are currently operating in an incredibly tight labour market. The most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggest that unemployment has dropped to 3.8%, the lowest level on record since 1974. At the same time, vacancies in the UK labour market are on the rise reaching 837,000 in June 2019, 11,000 more than last year (ONS, 2019). It is thus unsurprising that 50% of businesses attempted to recruit staff during Quarter 1 of 2019 and of those 60% reported that they experienced difficulties during the recruitment process (QES Q1 Report, 2019). With many local businesses experiencing challenges when attempting to access labour and the skilled staff they require to

maintain business growth, addressing the local skills shortage remains a top priority this year. Working in partnership with Hewett Recruitment, Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce will once again produce the annual Salary & Benefits 19/20 report. This report will benchmark the salaries and the benefits that companies offer across the two counties in order to support businesses to attract and retain staff. At a time when provisions for flexible working and annual leave allowance are as important to candidates as salaries, it has never been more crucial to compare the salary and benefits your business offers. Visit our website to complete the survey and receive your free copy of the report. The Salary & Benefits 2019/20 Report, in

partnership with Hewett Recruitment, will launch at our HR Conference during the autumn of 2019. If you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact contact Poppy Bramford, Policy Manager, on PoppyB@hwchamber.co.uk.

To read the full report, contact policy@hwchamber.co.uk to receive your copy

AGEING WORKFORCE IN WORCESTERSHIRE During Quarter 1, in addition to collecting the standardised QES data on recruitment, exports, cash flow and business confidence, the Chamber also collected data from businesses regarding the average age of their workforce. The UK population is going through a period of demographic change which will lead to a larger proportion of the labour market containing the over 50 age group. This will create future challenges for businesses who will need to address their policies and processes to facilitate the employment of people from an older age bracket.

In addition, businesses will also need to ensure they are capturing the skills and experience of workers who intend to retire to prevent a dramatic loss of skills. By working closely with Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership we have created a report which will inform the execution of the ‘Creating Our Future Workforce’ campaign and highlight the need for businesses to take proactive steps to begin succession planning.

Business Direction published by Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce

1 in 4 businesses reported that 50% or more of their workforce are aged 50 or over

31% of businesses in Worcestershire indicated that they had either never heard of the term ‘ageing workforce’ or they only knew a few details

HAINES WATTS CELEBRATES WINNING NATIONAL ACCOUNTANCY AWARD Haines Watts has once again won the prestigious Accountancy Firm of the Year Award at the 2019 FDs’ Excellence Awards. The awards highlight the pivotal role that banks, accountancy firms, financial software providers and pension firms play in partnering UK businesses and the high regard in which UK FDs and CFOs view their relationships with their service providers. Now in its 18th year, the awards acknowledge those who go above and beyond to deliver results and encourage growth.

Unlike other awards judged by a panel of experts, the service provider’s awards are voted for by business owners and finance directors across the UK. Haines Watts’ core client base is SME owner managed businesses, so to get this endorsement means a great deal to the firm. www.hwca.com

SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN THE WORKPLACE Since 2017 there has been a marked increase in sexual harassment-related news - with social media and email becoming two constant channels for harassment in the workplace.

In 2019, Neoperl is proud to reach a milestone year – celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary. To commemorate this important anniversary, Neoperl has decided to host a family fun day to celebrate with its employees and their families, to thank them all for the hard work everyone puts in daily, to uphold the standards that the Neoperl Brand demands. The day will feature complimentary entertainment for the children and adults, with various bouncy inflatables and obstacle courses. The celebration will also include live music from a local band and DJ. The hot food, tasty sweets, treats and first alcoholic drink will be redeemable with special Neoperl tokens given out upon arrival. The company will also be holding a raffle with over £1000 worth of prizes, supplied by Neoperl and various suppliers and local businesses, with all funds going to Macmillan cancer support.

Too often this type of behaviour is tolerated and while the person who sexually harasses someone is liable, employers can also be held responsible for acts of sexual harassment by their employees. This underlines why businesses should have clear processes in place. Recent cases, such as the allegations made against Harvey Weinstein, have caused concern over Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs). A new warning notice makes it clear that if an employee is not represented by a solicitor, then the solicitors acting for the business will be responsible for ensuring there is no unfair advantage and must prove that the NDA does not include obvious unenforceable clauses.

NASH BUSINESS SYSTEMS INVITED AS GUEST SPEAKER AT AUTISM EMPLOYMENT EVENT On Wednesday 27 April, Mark Nash from Nash Business Systems attended Worcestershire County Council’s ‘Autism in Employment’ event as guest speaker. The event was held by the council to highlight that only 16% of adults with autism are in full time employment. Nash Business Systems has provided employment and placement opportunities to adults with autism. Making small adjustments can help employees feel more at ease and help them enjoy work. As an employer, Mark has also learnt to make special adjustments. For example, at the interview stage Mark sent out a list of

interview questions in advance to remove the barrier of uncertainty. Candidates are also allowed to bring a chaperone along to the interview, providing a familiar face to help overcome the new surroundings. Through experience, Mark also found the importance of being direct. He explains: “Saying I will let you know in 1 to 2 weeks may confuse and upset, especially if you do not respond.”

INTRODUCING MULBERRY TREE RESTAURANT & BAR Mount Pleasant hotel has a new brand name for its restaurant and bar.

Helen Davenport, Partner

SKILLS CONCERNS CAUSING A STIR IN UK LABOUR MARKET “Concerns over the availability of suitable skills are at an all-time high and are causing a stir in the UK labour market. “To tackle this, we will be seeing more businesses being pushed to offer packages that are more attractive to new recruits. A survey by the CIPD and Adecco Group found that the national skills shortage has bolstered salaries in the private sector from two to 2.5 per cent, which is higher than the rate of inflation.

Set in a beautiful Georgian building overlooking the Priory Church with direct access to the Malvern Hills, this contemporary restaurant was recently rebranded Mulberry Tree Restaurant & Bar with a formal launch on Wednesday 1 May. Malvern’s relationship with the Mulberry tree started when literary legend, George Bernard Shaw planted one in the Priory Park in 1936. Although the tree was destroyed later on, parts of its cuttings found their way to Australia and then back to Malvern many years later. The Mount Pleasant has one such ‘Shaw’ cutting of that tree. In the words of AJ Bains, General Manager: “For us, Mulberry tree is a symbol of nature, faith and growth and it resonates with our love for Great Malvern, its community and its history and our pursuit of service excellence. Mulberry Tree represents a promise of growth and everlasting faith - exactly what we want our customers to think of us.” www.mountpleasanthotel.co.uk

“While the private sector is able/ willing to spend more on talent, the public sector is not in the same position so they must find at other ways of keeping talent. As well as or as an alternative to salary increases, all organisations should be looking at offering employees the support to upskill, retrain and gain digital and tech skills. Ultimately, this should bring positive results for both employers and employees, as the automation of certain tasks will allow staff to be more creative in their day-to-day roles.”

A MENU TO SHOWCASE THE REGION’S FINEST Since its opening in January, Pensons, Lee Westcott’s restaurant situated on the Worcestershire-Herefordshire border at the Netherwood Estate, has worked hard to establish itself on the foodie map. This month sees the addition of some exciting new dishes on the menu showcasing local ingredients. New on the menu includes starters of Wye Valley asparagus with home-made ricotta, chamomile and wild garlic foraged from the Estate and also a wonderful combination of salt-aged beef from Legge’s of Bromyard combined with black garlic, cep and cured egg yolk. Main courses include middle white pork, from Richard Vaughan’s outstanding rare breed meats at Huntsham Court Farm in the Wye Valley and the classic Herefordshire Herdwick lamb from Legge’s. To round off the meal, a dessert of local Wye Valley rhubarb is a must before enjoying a coffee in the sunny courtyard.

JOURNEY TO SUCCESS WITH THE MAGIC TRACTOR Worcestershire Business Central is working with The Magic Tractor to help shape its latest initiative. Journey to Success, forming part of the Inspiring Growth campaign, is aimed at supporting the growth of SMEs in Worcestershire through a series of seminars and events. Ania Naughton, Owner and ‘Head Farmer’ of The Magic Tractor, says the project has been a fun one: “Journey to Success lent itself to using the idea of travel and transport as an analogy to scaling a business - changing lanes, avoiding potholes, travelling to new markets etc. We

relished the opportunity to interpret the information with a bit humour to make the ideas resonate with people.” Kevin Aisbitt, Growth Hub Manager at Worcestershire Business Central says: “We’ve been given an assortment of tools to promote the events across all media with flyers, banners and graphics to use on our website and social media. The theme is embedded within how we deliver our message in the sessions, using ideas like the ‘Business MOT checklist’ for companies considering scaling up.”

PERSHORE’S TOM AWARDED TOP APPRENTICE TITLE A horticulture apprentice training at Pershore College has been named as the Midland Regional Growers (MRG) Apprentice of the Year. Tom Everard, who is currently employed at the Worcestershire-based plant company Bransford Webbs, was presented with the award by the BBC television gardening presenter, Monty Don, during last month’s RHS Malvern Spring Show. Currently in the second year of his apprenticeship scheme, the 20-year old from Clifton-upon-Teme was also given a trophy and £100 in prize money. Tom said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed the time I have spent at Pershore College and found it extremely useful relating the knowledge I have learnt there to various tasks I have completed at work.” Mark Diggines, MRG training assessor at Pershore College, said: “Tom has embraced the world of plant production and fully deserves his award of Midland Regional Growers' Apprentice of the Year 2019. He has taken every challenge in his stride and

demonstrated an ability well beyond his experience. “During his apprenticeship, Tom has won a trip over to see the plant nurseries in Holland, won a day at the RHS Chelsea Show and seen himself promoted to supervisor. He is a credit to both Bransford Webbs Plant Company and Pershore College.” Tom joined Bransford Webbs in September 2017 on a two-year apprenticeship scheme and is currently working towards a Level 2 work-based learning Diploma in Production Horticulture.

His apprenticeship mentor at Bransford Webbs, Karl O’Neill, said: “We are very proud of Tom’s achievements. He has worked very hard during his apprenticeship and is a worthy winner of this award. We are positive he has a bright future with us here.” If you are an employer and looking for an apprentice, you can find out more information at wcg.ac.uk/hireanapprentice. FORMER MIDWIFE JOINS LAW FIRM on the experience and advice of a nurse, doctor and now a midwife.”

Leading law firm Lanyon Bowdler has strengthened its award-winning clinical negligence team with the appointment of a new medical legal assistant - a registered midwife with more than 30 years’ experience.

BIGINTERVIEW

PUTTING PEOPLE FIRST Founded by Louise Hewett in 1980, Hewett Recruitment will soon be celebrating its 40th anniversary. In this issue of BD, Ben Mannion and Laura Hewett, directors of the company, provide insights into the award-winning company and explain why their business mantra is to put people first. Originally founded as a recruitment agency providing temporary workers to businesses around the region, in response to customer need, Hewett Recruitment soon developed to provide permanent recruitment services too. Today, the company specialises in engineering, IT, Industrial, commercial and executive recruitment, in addition to continuing to place contractors

026

and temporary workers with local companies. Over the last ten years, their IT and engineering division has grown particularly significantly, with each new technological breakthrough heralding the need for more specialists in related disciplines. Widely regarded as Worcestershire’s premier specialist recruitment agency, Hewett Recruitment is renowned for the high quality of their service and surprisingly competitive fees. Providing more than a typical recruitment agency, the team at Hewett offer a broader, consultative service that goes beyond filling a vacancy. “Putting people first is our priority,” explains Laura. “It’s our firm belief that if we look after people, then the business will follow, so we work closely with our candidates and clients to ensure the best outcome for all concerned. We do what we say we will and get it right first time, thereby reducing the workload of our clients.”

“Always making sure we have the right person in the right placement, whether it is a temporary or permanent role, is crucial and we are always respectful of the fact that we’re dealing with people’s careers and their livelihoods,” observes Ben. “We look after our temps, keeping our payroll in-house, for example, so we ensure everyone is paid accurately and on time. “Hiring temporary workers continues to have benefits for employers, helping them to meet seasonal demand. There are a number of industries with which we work, like the food and drink industry, that experience marked peaks and troughs throughout the year. Whilst hiring specialist contractors can help with important but short-term projects like IT upgrades for example.” “When it comes to events such as Brexit or the implementation of GDPR, we’re quick to share what we know,” adds Laura, “so we always make the information we have available to our clients straightaway,

July/August 2019

BIGINTERVIEW regularly updating the Brexit hub on our website, for example. “Contributing to the community is also important to us. To celebrate our 40th year in business, we’ve launched our 40@40 Challenge with the aim of raising £40,000 for local charities through a series of fundraising events. Already we’ve raised over £31,000, but there’s still work to do, so please look out for our upcoming events over the next few months.” “Inspiring the next generation is another priority for us,” explains Ben, “that’s why we’re delighted to have been named Worcestershire's first Cornerstone Employer, working in partnership with Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership to support young people in the area. “Businesses have a role to play in helping young people understand what opportunities are out there and of the importance of employability skills,” Ben adds. “Our mission is to prepare and inspire young people for the changing world of work.” What speaks volume about the company is the length of service of the Hewett Recruitment team, which is unusual in a sector often associated with a fast turnover of staff. Many of their consultants have been with the company for ten or twelve years, working alongside their clients for a long time and offering a continuity of service rare in the industry. The team’s extensive experience means they know their markets and clients well, providing insights and expertise that add

Putting people first is our priority,” explains Laura. “It’s our firm belief that if we look after people, then the business will follow, so we work closely with our candidates and clients to ensure the best outcome for all concerned. value for their clients. “As a trusted family business, we deliver high-quality work and have strong values which we take out to our clients,” explains Laura. The recruitment industry is extremely competitive and the fact that Hewett Recruitment has chalked up almost 40 years reflects the high esteem in which they are held, so it’s no surprise they’ve been awarded a number of accolades and hosted a royal visit from HRH the Countess of Wessex GCVO. One concern heard about regularly in business is the difficulty companies have retaining employees, but here too the Hewett team has advice. “There are simple steps businesses can take, which will help them to retain employees,” explains Laura. “Regularly benchmarking salaries and benefits against those of their competitors and other companies in the region is an absolute must.

“Another factor that’s becoming increasingly important is the opportunity for flexible working, in many ways, this is more important than financial benefits. Around 80% of employees would prefer to work flexibly, but only 10% of job vacancies are advertised as flexible. In addition to the difficulty of juggling caring responsibilities, with people working later and longer, flexible working is increasingly in demand. “There’s a huge gap between supply and demand - so offering flexible working is one way in which employers can differentiate themselves from their competitors. Businesses may well find it advantageous to move away from a ‘presenteeism’ culture,” observes Laura, “as flexible working has been shown to enhance productivity, reduce stress levels and to make businesses more attractive as an employer.” “As a business, we don’t rest on our laurels but keep reinventing ourselves,” adds Ben, “the development of the company’s services has been driven by changes in the economy and the job market. “As a relatively small business, we can move quickly to meet customer requirements and respond to the changing market. Continuing to invest in new technology and to streamline our processes making them as efficient as possible is crucial, whilst never forgetting that people are at the heart of everything we do. “Over the coming years, we see the IT and engineering sectors continuing to grow in response to the progress being made in AI and robotics, creating new roles in these areas, but there will still be a huge demand for the creative industries too.” www.hewett-recruitment.co.uk

BUILDING A BRIGHT FUTURE Worcester-based Fortis Living looks after 15,000 homes in the area, making them the largest social landlord in the county. Recently, they joined with Waterloo Housing to form the Platform Housing Group – a move that’s brought together two high performing organisations with a commitment to making a positive difference in local communities. Today, the group includes Fortis Living, Fortis Property Care, Waterloo Housing and Waterloo Homes, collectively they own and manage 45,000 homes around the region and a little further afield, in addition to employing over 1,200 people. In this issue, we speak to Dennis Evans, Group Property Care Director who has a particular responsibility for the maintenance side of the business: Fortis Property Care. “Providing affordable, good-quality homes and the maintenance services that go alongside them, make a tangible difference to the communities we serve. As the commercial arm of a housing association, all of our profits are ploughed back into our local communities building new homes, maintaining existing homes and providing more job opportunities in the region. “In working to regenerate these areas we’re keen to raise awareness of the job opportunities that exist with us in

then a few years on are working for us as managers, overseeing large contracts. One good example of which is a colleague of mine who started off as an apprentice and has since received four promotions in just 13 years.

“Looking back, it’s clear that the construction sector was hit particularly hard by the recession and the industry subsequently lost a lot of skilled and experienced personnel. That’s why we’re taking steps to address the skills gap and provide job opportunities in the region too.

“Putting time, attention and resources into developing our team at all levels is important to us, as we want to support them in achieving their career aspirations. We hope employees see a clear career path ahead of them when they join us and will stay with us for the long term. With this in mind, all of our employees will have individual learning plans and we aim to provide a rewards ladder, including increased pay, which is linked to the successful completion of specific training courses.

“We work with local schools and colleges and ex-service personnel to interest them in a construction career. At Fortis Property Care, we’ve also been to numerous job fairs to promote the opportunities available with us. We also organise work placements and run a well-established apprenticeship programme, which we are expanding, with the aim that 10% of our workforce will be made up of apprentices in the future. “In addition, Worcestershire Community Trust has been working with us in the heart of one of the largest estates we manage, to promote the opportunities for women presented by construction and trade occupations. Encouraging more female apprentices into the industry will help us to achieve a better balance within our team and enable us to tailor our services to suit the needs of our customer base too. “We have a strong track record of delivering apprenticeships and developing our team. Already we’ve had people who started off on a trial work placement successfully take up apprenticeships and

“Whilst upskilling our workforce and providing the skills they need to work with the new, greener technology that is playing an increasing part in the construction industry is another key area of focus for us. “Understanding the needs of our frontline staff is something we strive for, which is why we provide lots of opportunities for feedback. As well as training, pay and rewards, we strive to make the industry attractive in other ways too, like by offering flexible working, for example, so our employees achieve a better work-life balance. “As a business with a social purpose, we are committed to investing in our people and in our local communities too, working together to build a brighter future.” www.fortisliving.com

SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION Many young people haven’t been given any guidance on taking the first steps in their career. Most haven’t considered whether their career would be better served by going to university or by doing an apprenticeship. Writing a CV and performing well at interview are also areas in which they’ve often received inadequate guidance. They might know you need to sell yourself at an interview, but they don’t know what this means or how to do it.

It all began when my wife asked me to pop into the supermarket. In the course of our conversation, the young woman at the till let slip she’d achieved a 2:1 degree but that till-work was the best job she could obtain. The conversation really bothered me, I did some research and found out that there were thousands of young people in the same situation and I felt strongly that something should be done to help them. After speaking to senior executives, it became clear that savvy employers begin identifying potential employees long before they advertise a job vacancy - like a football team using a talent scout. Young people need to start looking at the job market and making connections long before they need a job, especially given that 50% of jobs are filled without being advertised. No one advertises a job vacancy without having a problem to solve, so it can be helpful for young people to consider the problems employer’s face and how

Barry Jackson, Aspire Academy they are qualified to solve them. Looking at recruitment from the employer’s perspective and seeing what jobs and skills are in demand is a good place to start.

I’ve carried out over 3,000 mock interviews with students and spoken to many senior executives. My book and courses draw on this research with the aim of helping young people to understand the job market better. Young people are the future of the country and our businesses; we need to support them and invest in our future workforce. aspire-academy.net

WORCESTERSHIRE’S PREMIER STAINLESS STEEL STOCKHOLDER AND PROCESSOR For over 25 years the UKF Group has been one of the UK’s largest, independent stainless steel stockholders and processors. Our vast product range is used across a variety of industry sectors including, Automotive, Construction, Domestic Appliances, Heating & Ventilation, Marine and Pharmaceutical. We also offer the value-added services of cutting, laser cutting, manipulation, perforating and polishing. The Group is made up of four businesses including, UKF Stainless, JPC Perforators, Ferrari Stainless and Alloys and Stainless Metals & Alloys. All offering quality product and service throughout the UK and Ireland. UKF was incorporated in 1992 under the joint ownership of current Chairman Phil Morris and business partner Chris Davies. Originally set up as purely a stainless steel stockholder, the name UKF derived from ‘United Kingdom France’, as the tube mill originally supplying the business was French. The company moved to a variety of different premises around Redditch, before moving to its current home on Buntsford Park Road Bromsgrove in 1999. It was during these early years that Phil and Chris quickly realised that customers not only wanted a stainless steel stockholder, but one that could process too. The first value-added service that UKF were able to offer to its customers was tube cutting in 1999, this was swiftly followed by perforation in 2000 and the Joint Perforating Company was born. In addition to cutting and perforation at a factory near Birmingham, polishing soon

followed with a factory in Redditch. Since those early days, the business has remained committed to offering its customers new and innovative ways of adding value. Throughout the next decade UKF continued to grow steadily. On-going investment in machinery and partnering up with a variety of mills across the globe, all contributed to this growth. It was also during this time that Phil and his team were able to forge long-lasting relationships with key players in the automotive and domestic appliance markets, all of whom remain on the order books today. In 2007 a second site in Bromsgrove was purchased. All the cutting, perforating and polishing processes that had previously been carried out in Redditch and Birmingham, were now brought under one roof. This created a much more streamlined and efficient manufacturing hub for the business. UKF and JPC were now formally known as The UKF Stainless Holdings Group. By 2012 tube bending and manipulation was added to the portfolio of value-added services that UKF could now offer its customers, and through a working partnership with a supplier to the automotive sector, the company was able to utilise an existing processing site in Coventry.

More recently the group have grown through acquisitions, with the purchase of Ferrari Stainless and Alloys and Stainless Metals & Alloys. Ferrari is based on the south coast in Bournemouth and supplies stainless steel, but also specialises in aluminium products. They supply a varied customer base but particularly the Engineering, Marine and Civil Projects sectors. The creation of Stainless Metals & Alloys enabled the UKF Group entry into both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland markets. It too supplies stainless steel and also aluminium products to a wide range of sectors. As one of the fastest growing suppliers in Ireland, a warehouse in Lisburn and Dublin is in operation, as well as a dedicated transport fleet. Looking ahead, despite the uncertainty of Brexit looming large over UK manufacturing, The UKF Group are continuing to invest and working hard to develop inroads into new markets. If would like to find out more about UKF’s products and services, contact us on Tel: 01527 578686 info@ukf-group.com www.ukf-group.com

Simon Greenhill, the UKF Group Managing Director believes “In recent years it’s been investment in the latest machinery that’s given us the edge. The fully integrated cutting machine and tube laser machine have enabled us to offer precision value-added capabilities to new and existing customers"

Online Divorce - The devil is in the detail The online divorce system was set up by Her Majesties Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS). Its objective is to remove some of the bureaucracy from often stressful and lengthy divorce proceedings and reduce current delays experienced by clients, using the paper system. Presently, the system is being trialed by the public and a few carefully chosen solicitors, before being rolled out for general use. First indications are that the system will deliver rapid progress for clients, something that practitioners will welcome. Malvern solicitors Russell & Co in particular welcome a more streamlined process. However, Russell & Co warn that caution is necessary, when taking advantage of a slick divorce process. The current process,

although slow, often provides time for individuals to reflect on the emotional impact of divorce and the financial consequences. Where the divorce petition remains the application for financial settlement, it should be treated with respect. Once a divorce petition is issued, financial claims can be pursued by either party. Whether or not they pursue those claims at the time or not, does not prevent them from doing so in future. Either party are legitimately able to do so, even after decree absolute. There is no alternative to good legal advice and it is vital when the divorce process is simplified. It was announced post-Christmas 2018 that a divorce petition was issued on Christmas day! Always seek advice before taking such an important step, without it online divorce could be the most costly application one ever makes.

It’s recognition of the hard work that the team in the community has put in to running our pub in Worcestershire. “We can already see the benefits in our visitor numbers through being a finalist, so I’m hoping that now being a winner will encourage more people to come visit us – onwards and upwards!” Previous winners have also included Churchfields Saltworks, Worcestershire County Cricket Club, Broadway Arts Festival and Croome Cuisine. PARALLEL LINES COMPLETES CONTRACT FOR AIRPORT Worcestershire based line-marking firm Parallel Lines has recently completed a contract at Birmingham Airport to reconfigure their luggage handling routes and health and safety markings, which was secured earlier in the year. Working with Speller Metcalfe, Parallel Lines worked over the course of a week to mark the new routes for luggage handlers, ensuring a smooth operation for the team at Birmingham Airport. Speaking about the job, Owner David Mann said: “It’s great to be given the opportunity to carry out this work. Every job is different and some are bigger than others; our recent work with Hermes has firmly established us as a company who can take on any task. “With jobs like this being secured and high demand in general the sky’s the limit for us.” www.pl-linemarking.co.uk

Congratulations to this year’s Worcester Sixth Form College Young Enterprise team, Athena who won Best Company at the West Midlands Regional Finals on Thursday 6 June and now progress to the National Finals in London on Tuesday 18 June. KINGSPAN IN SEVEN HEAVEN For the 7th year in succession, Kingspan has been recognised amongst the top companies in the country as a Business Superbrand. The annual event is voted for by 5000 British business professionals in combination with a council of senior business leaders. Over 3000 brands were carefully judged against three key criteria: quality, reliability and distinction. Kingspan was recognised for its ongoing commitment to tackling climate change. Globally, the Kingspan Group has now moved to 75% of its Net Zero Energy goal. This will require all energy used at its sites to be met with on or offsite renewable energy on an aggregate basis across the year.

The scale of their achievement is underlined by the fact that this is the first time in 17 years that a group from South Worcestershire has reached the national finals. The Worcester Sixth Form College team also scooped prestigious awards for the innovation and creativity of their product, ‘My Amego’ which is a children’s toy that promotes mental wellbeing and builds emotional and communicative skills. The toy is a small plush character with a series of coloured pompoms corresponding to emotions. The team say that the child can zip the emotion they are feeling up and the caregiver can later discuss their feelings with them. It is intended that this will help children who may find talking about, writing or expressing how they are feeling difficult. www.athenaye.wixsite.com/myamego

As part of this commitment, Kingspan Insulation has introduced several measures at its Herefordshire site including a giant solar panel (PV) roof array. Its industry leading product development work was also highlighted including the launch of its new Kingspan Thermataper TT44-K and TT47-K roof insulation. www.kingspan.com

Road to Upton now raised and flood ready A much needed programme of works to reduce the impact of flooding on local businesses and residents in Upton-upon-Severn is now complete. Hailed as a feat in engineering due to its complexity, the major scheme needed extensive flood modelling before 26 huge pipes were inserted under the A4104 to improve drainage of flood water and the road raised by up to 1 metre in some areas. Councillor Tony Miller, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Environment, said:

“The delivery of this huge project was vital for the local economy. I’m delighted that the works are now complete, ensuring the likelihood of this road flooding in the future is dramatically reduced and so keeping Upton ‘open for business’.” Funding for this scheme came via Worcestershire County Council and the Local Growth Fund through the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership. Throughout the scheme the project team worked closely with festival organisers, local businesses and residents to ensure they were kept up to date with progress and that disruption was kept to a minimum.

YOUR JOURNEY TO BUSINESS SUCCESS

Inspiring Growth – Journey to Success is a dynamic business support campaign created by Worcestershire Business Central to support the Growth of SMEs in Worcestershire that have strong ambitions, an entrepreneurial spirit, and are looking to maximise their opportunities inside and out of the county. The aim of the events is to provide companies with information on key issues to consider at each various stages of the growth of a business, which is directly linked to the number of employees in a

040

company. In Worcestershire, 80% of SMEs employ between 1-10 people, but SMEs of any size should consider four key pillars of Strategy, People, Execution of Strategy and Cash during the “Journey to Success”. At the events the audience will be introduced to the ‘Journey’ in partnership with Bizsmart, hear from the business who is going through their own ‘Journey’ and speakers who will cover the “Four Pillars” in more detail. Companies will then discuss, debate and take actions away to then implement into their company.

at a “Finale” event that will be held once both activity streams have come to end before the end of the calendar year.

In parallel to the “Inspiring Growth – Journey to Success” events, companies will be able have the opportunity to discuss issues in much more depth with peers at planned “Scale-up – Club” events being organised by BizSmart in partnership with Worcestershire Business Central.

All companies who attend the "Inspiring Growth - Journey to Success" and future events will be able to have a listing on the Inspiring Growth Directory on WBC's website. The Directory will not only highlight those businesses who are looking to grow in the county, but will be an invaluable tool to share business skills that may be required from peers in the local area.

Companies can attend all of the planned “Inspiring Growth – Journey to Success” events and the planned “Scale-up Club” events or dip in and out of both. We really want companies to take something away and work to implement actions into the business and then report back on progress

At the “finale” event, all companies who are present will be asked to feedback on their progress to actions, what this has meant to the business, and what it could mean in the future. The Peer Group will nominate which company has made the most progress. The company chosen will then receive a FREE video case mapping the history of its Journey.

If you have any questions, or looking for further business support, please don’t hesitate to contact our team on 01905 677888 or email info@business-central.co.uk

For example, AI and blockchain are things that we are learning about more and more, but are not yet using in everyday business. However, predictions say that the next decade or so may bring them into mainstream use. “There were some other interesting areas covered as well, such as looking at Generation Z: the digital natives, and also the way that there is a definite digital transformation occurring within business. CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT: LEVELLING UP ON THE RELATIONSHIP Whether it’s on social media, marketing emails, review sites, face-to-face at conventions or expos, or even just on the phone, it can be difficult to make a meaningful connection with your customers. I’m not talking about the relationship building. Getting to know what an individual or a company wants from your company and building ties through that is one thing. It’s important, don’t get me wrong, my last article focused entirely on how important it is. But it isn’t the same as customer engagement. When I say customer engagement, what I mean is having an open dialogue between your business and your customers. A conversation that isn’t about the purchasing of goods or services, but rather about what they think or how they feel about your products and customer service. In my experience, there are three levels or stages to the ways people engage with a company. Not everyone goes through all of them (or even in this order), though, so it is important to not think of yourself or your company as failing if all of your customers aren’t micro-influencers within a year of the first purchase.

ENGAGEMENT LEVEL 1: FEEDBACK When you first start down the road of encouraging customer engagement, the first rung on the ladder is establishing the best way to gather feedback. Some of the feedback will be easy to track and make decisions off, like survey results. This will be hard numbers: 5 stars for this, 2 stars for that, etc. You may also get increases or decreases in customer support calls, which could mean a lot of things from better use of your Knowledgebase to general dissatisfaction with a new product. Again, hard numbers that you can collate and analyse. Other information, however, will be slipperier. It will be things like “I talked to so-and-so and she’s not happy with her latest delivery” or “That guy just loves the new widget”. Useful information, but getting the numbers on it is trickier (but not impossible).

044

ENGAGEMENT LEVEL 2: SUGGESTIONS Once you get your customers talking to you and telling you what they think of your product, it isn’t much of a jump before they tell you what they would do differently. Some of it may be outside of your product roadmap or even outside the realms of possibility, but it’s all good engagement. After all, it shows that they’re thinking about your product and how they could better integrate it into their lives. Handling these suggestions is tricky, in fact there are dozens of online tools designed to help you do just that! At this level of engagement, the important thing is to make it clear that you welcome their suggestions and to feedback to them when you are implementing them.

ENGAGEMENT LEVEL 3: OPEN DIALOGUE It’s important to note that you’re unlikely to achieve full customer engagement with each and every one of your customers. Some will get to the Feedback stage and never move beyond it, others won’t even get that far.

dialogue. This engagement might be about your product or it could be about your customer service or even your social media presence. You just never know, every company experiences it differently. For us, reaching this level often includes us asking those customers to beta test something for us. It could be a new mobile app or a new method of communication (no really—watch this space for that one). We ask them to test because we know that we’ll get honest feedback, considered insights and suggestions, along with the ability to pick up the phone and generally chat about the new development. Where is it going, where did it come from, what is the potential impact. The most important thing about this level of engagement is that you as the business owner recognise the contribution your customers are making.

Graham Anderson, is the CEO and founder of OpenCRM, one of the UK’s leading customer relationship management systems.

With some, however, you’ll move through Feedback and Suggestions, passing into a relationship that includes full and open

EMPLOYMENT AND SKILLS This July and August edition of Business Direction is focusing on employment and skills. This ties in well with the launch of the International Trade Training guide. In addition to running bespoke international training courses for clients, H&W Chamber is delivering 21 international trade training over 45 dates for 2019/20. Businesses and employees benefit from the investment in training. Staff morale and confidence is enhanced, therefore enabling improved efficiency, accuracy and engagement. Investment in training facilitates staff retention, which has a direct financial benefit too. H&W Chamber Member, Guy Batchelor, Managing Director of Minerva Elite Performance Ltd, reinforced this saying: “A study by ACAS found on average the cost to employers of replacing a single member of staff is more than £30,000”. Guy clarified this stating: “The costs incorporate recruitment fees, HR and Management time, loss of interim productivity and new training.” Trading internationally can be complex and not always straightforward. As a result it is important for companies to keep abreast of international trade best practice as well as international trade compliance rules and regulations, and a potentially greater importance for companies is to keep on top of best practises and legislative compliance. The Chamber’s new international trade training booklet gives a clear and concise overview of each course, the entry level which is required and a natural development and graduation path.

If you are considering or are completely new to international trade start with a Beginners Guide to Import or the Beginners Guide to Export. These are half-day courses both of which provide a good starting point. Alternatively, jump right into a full day course that matches your experience and requirements, and develop your international trade skills and knowledge. The courses are divided into four sections. They are fully revised prior to presentation to ensure the content is relevant and current:

ON THE PULSE Keep on top of key international trading issues, changes in regulations and the implications of Brexit for your International Trade

IMPORTING Given the implications of Brexit, import procedures could take on significantly more importance for many more UK companies, particularly those currently importing from the EU

EXPORTING Includes ‘How to…’ courses, documentation and procedures, distribution channels, direct shipping, international trade compliance finance and more

GLOBAL GATEWAY Important for both importing and exporting businesses. Select the area that is relevant for your business

Copies of the International Trade Training A5 booklet are available from both of the Chamber’s Herefordshire and Worcestershire offices or can be requested by emailing: internationaltrade@hwchamber.co.uk Keep up to date on international trade training news, courses and services, by signing up for our e-newsletter distributed twice monthly, or by logging into the Members area on www.hwchamber.co.uk

CUSTOMS DECLARATION SERVICE HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has begun a phased launch of the Customs Declaration Service (CDS). CDS will replace the existing Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system. CHIEF currently processes declarations to facilitate the international movement of goods between the UK and non-EU countries. CHIEF will continue to run for a time to aid the transition to CDS. To assist with this transition, H&W Chamber of Commerce has worked with Strong & Herd LLP to deliver two courses that will inform and educate businesses about the new system and its requirements. The courses are relevant for all businesses and freight forwarders that currently process declarations to facilitate the international movement of goods between the UK and non-EU countries. This may prove to be even more relevant for UK businesses depending on the outcome of Brexit. The courses provide a practical guide into the completion of CHIEF C88 and National Export System (NES) entries, as well as the requirements for Entry into Declarants Records (EIDR) and Customs Supervised Exports (CSE), and the new systems introduced under the Union Customs Code (UCC). 40@40 As summer continues, Hewett Recruitment is nearly half way through its40@40 Challenge, seeing the Worcestershire based specialist recruitment agency raise £40,000 for local charities by 2020, to celebrate its 40th year in business.

SIGHT CONCERN SUPPORTED BY LOCAL BUSINESSES This year’s annual Blindfold Mile took place on Saturday 8 June in Redditch Town Centre, and welcomed keen participants (despite the downpour) to take part in the challenge. The event has been staged across Worcester City Centre and Malvern Town Centre in recent years, involving over 200 participants, and moved to Redditch for the first time in 2019. Sight Concern would like to thank all those involved for helping to raise the much needed funds to increase awareness of the challenges that blind and partially sighted people overcome each day.

So far, the firm has participated in and ran multiple charity events, ranging from charity sleep outs and fun runs to more intense activities like marathons, and a 220-mile canoe challenge! “We’ve done a lot of work with regional fundraising projects over the last forty years,” Director, Laura Hewett comments, “so we understand how valuable every penny raised is, in helping them provide the level of support and care that they do. We’re determined to give it our all and can’t think of a better way of celebrating our 40th year in business.” The Hewett Team is well on their way to achieving its £40,000 goal! To find out more and show your support, please visit http://bit. ly/4040Challenge www.hewett-recruitment.co.uk

Volunteer since September 2018, Lauren Salisbury, commented: “It has been a pleasure to be part of The Prince’s Trust, and I have been an integral part of the planning and running of events on behalf of the charity. “We are now looking for someone to join the team and help bring new ideas to raise the well deserved funds for those benefitting from The Prince’s Trust.”

(From left to right) Elle Field, Buying Co-ordinator, Adrian Hoare – Garden Design & Domestic Landscape Sales Manager, Jane Altham, Line Leader and Shaeree Lewis, also a Line Leader from Wyevale Nurseries, who are all taking part in the challenge.

20 members of staff from Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford took part in a challenge in June in aid of charity. Members of the team either hiked 18-miles from Talybont-on-Usk to Llangattock, took part in an 8-mile walk or a 34-mile cycle in the same area, to raise awareness for The Cart Shed. Adrian Hoare, Sales Manager, Garden Design/Domestic Landscape at Wyevale Nurseries, explained: “Our aim [was] to

raise awareness for The Cart Shed, which is based in North West Herefordshire. It provides tailored therapeutic support in a woodland setting helping those experiencing an imbalance in their lives to heal, learn new skills, find friendship and a future. We hope people in the industry will be able to donate some much-needed funds for the charity.” www.thecartshed.co.uk

COLLABORATION BETWEEN MEMBERS – SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL CHARITIES Childhood cancer is the number one disease cause of death of children in the UK. By teaching parents the signs to look for, we can help save lives through diagnosing children earlier. Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust (GKCCT) was approached by Tracey and the team at Indegu last year offering to help following a chance meeting at the Worcester Women’s’ Business Breakfast. Indegu had seen the awareness card and thought that the business could help GKCCT to develop it further to help the charity reach even more families, but also be used as an educational tool in other childcare areas. Tracey Marlow-Jones, Director at Indegu, said: “It has been our pleasure to support Jen, Michelle and the Grace Kelly team who are working hard to raise awareness to save lives. Please support them by sharing the resource with families, childcare settings and any other relevant organisations.” The team at GKCCT is extremely pleased with the professional piece that has been developed, and would be delighted to recommend Indegu to others. LASTWORD

INSPIRATION FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE IN BUSINESS It’s all about focus and self-belief, keeping your head down and doing your own thing – says Chamber Member, Ruby Edwards. Having been in the world of business for over 20 years, with over half that time spent in the utilities sector specialising in electricity trading arrangements, as well as founding Funny Blood - to support families with rare bleeding conditions - Ruby has taken her collective skills to launch You Do Better PR. “I’m passionate about collaboration and finding innovative ways to buck the trend and inspire others. I employ a model that utilises the skills and experience of associates, some of whom are in employed roles and work with me as their side-hustle and others are post graduate students with a flair for business. I work with them to undertake projects in which they excel, where I’m less capable and they shine.” In order to pay it forward and support others, Ruby joined the Enterprise Advisor scheme with the Worcestershire LEP, providing help and advice to the future workforce. Inspired by the advice given in recent interviews with business leaders, Ruby explores how our local peers can offer invaluable advice to support businesses around the two counties. When chatting with Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch, his advice was to

“Never say no”, suggesting that in the first instance it’s important to say yes to opportunity and secondly to find out how to make it work. Louise Hewett, founder and MD of Hewett Recruitment suggested that we: “Visualise success and believe that anything is possible.” Kully Johal CEO and investor of GBR14, member of the first cohort of Betaden says: “It’s important to: “go out and shine”. This advice is mirrored by Julia Williams, business consultant and vice-chair of the Worcestershire Ambassadors agreed and encouraged us to: “Support and lift each other up”, and Jem Semini MD of ISO Quality Services Ltd, advised everyone to: “Never stop learning”.

The advice of peers can support the growth and knowledge-base of your own business and provide a focus for you. This, coupled with hard work and self-belief, Ruby understands is vital for the success. Ruby says: “It seems wise not only to seize opportunities as they come your way but also to find your own focus by doing your own thing, your way, in order to create a sustainable business. It took me a while to realise that there is great worth in being yourself. Now I embrace it and seek out creative approaches to work, whether it’s via collaborate ventures or encouraging the associates I work with to learn new skills.” www.youdobetter.co.uk

WHY WRITING A BOOK IS GOOD BUSINESS Business books are good for business. They raise your profile, demonstrate thought-leadership, create media opportunities and can be a platform for launching your business. That’s why so many entrepreneurs ‘write’ one, though given the commitment required, most hire ghostwriters to do the heavy lifting for them — over half of all traditionally published books are said to be co-written, including bestsellers like Stephen Covey’s ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective People’.

054

Is writing a book something you should consider? Certainly, if you’re an established entrepreneur looking to build authority, promote an idea, or tell a corporate tale or two. And it’s pretty much a ‘must have’ if you have ambitions as a public speaker. But even if you’re a micro-business or consultant, a book can still highlight your expertise and generate leads for products and services, physical or digital. With the emergence of a vibrant independent publishing industry energised by new technologies, like print on demand, and the availability of massive online marketplaces (think Amazon), getting a book to market is

easier and much faster than you might think, with traditional publishing timelines condensed from years to mere months. All of which means if you haven’t already written one … then maybe you should. www.businessghostwriter.co.uk
