As we near the extended Brexit deadline of Thursday 31 October, at the time of writing businesses are still calling for clarity following a difficult two years of ongoing negotiations. Such concerns include the national skills shortage, transport infrastructure and of course, the next steps in Brexit preparations. I, on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, urge Mr Johnson to tackle the difficult period ahead of him head on, and hope that he acts with the best interests for the country to install confidence and trust in communities after a turbulent 12-months. With so little time left before the UK is due to exit the European Union, the next several weeks will be critical for shaping the trajectory of the economy.

Greenhouse gas emissions in the UK will be cut to almost zero by 2050, under the terms of a new government plan to tackle climate change, and several Councils from across the country have made a variety of pledges to help the environment.
People to do Business With
On Friday 8 March 2019, Herefordshire Council declared a climate emergency, committing to an accelerated reduction of the Council’s carbon emissions, with aspirations to be carbon neutral by 2030 and to change its energy supply to 100% renewable source. Calls to declare a climate emergency have also been discussed across the region, joining the other hundred authorities who have already done so. Whether you are implementing new environmental policies, or want to reduce your carbon emissions, energy efficiency measures do not need to be costly. As part of the Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP), Energy Efficiency Advisors are available to provide free energy assessments on your site. CHAMBER CHAMPIONS SURPASS BOUNDARIES AT STREET 6S The Chamber Champions teamed up once again to take part in 2019’s Worcester Street 6s, supported by the Worcestershire Ambassadors and in aid of the Worcestershire Cobham Cricket Trust.
It was brilliant to see so many Members at this year’s Herefordshire Skills Show, held in July at Hereford Racecourse, and hosted by The Marches Skills Provider Network, Herefordshire Council, University of Wolverhampton, Herefordshire Training Providers and the DWP. The Chamber and the Careers and Enterprise Company also supported the event, which was aimed at providing visitors with expert advice and guidance from local businesses and training providers about the current job market. Delegates were also able to receive information to support in up-skilling employees, and were invited to ‘have a go’ at a variety of over 60 stands on the day. The Chamber thoroughly enjoyed the event, and hopes that local employers found it both useful and insightful. To find out about more upcoming and similar events, please contact the Marches Skills Provider Network on 07823 464039.
BIG BEACH PARTY TO CELEBRATE IIP ACCREDITATION On Friday 12 July, the Chamber team took part in St Richard’s Hospice’s ‘Big Beach Party’ to embrace the lovely summer weather and don Hawaiian beach attire.
The team of seven surpassed the boundaries set by last year’s team to make it to the final of the third group. Whilst just missing out on the title to the Worcestershire Ambassadors Lions, the Champions would like to congratulate the winning side, and the overall winners of the day Amco Services.
The fundraising event coincided with its celebration BBQ, to say ‘well done and thank you’ to all members of staff for their hard work to celebrate its gold achievement in the Investors in People accreditation, and for placing once again in The Sunday Times Top 100 ‘Best Not-for-Profit Organisations to Work for’ 2019.
The 18 teams made up of businesses from across the county played matches in Cathedral Plaza to help support the trust, and support young children from underprivileged backgrounds by bringing cricket to places it isn’t normally played. We look forward to hearing the full amount of money raised on the day.
Chamber staff arrived at Browns at the Quay for a chilled afternoon, and to indulge in a selection of tasty food ranging from burgers, hot dogs, fries, seasonal salads, coleslaw and more. Everyone also received free welcome drinks and enjoyed hours of relaxing and socialising with their colleagues.

LAST CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY IN WORCESTERSHIRE PASSENGER TRANSPORT STRATEGY As the recent climate emergencies turn our attention to more sustainable transport, residents in Worcestershire are being invited to have their say on a brand new transport consultation.

CABINET RESHUFFLE SEES BROMSGROVE MP PROMOTED TO CHANCELLOR
Worcestershire County Council is consulting residents and stakeholders on the draft Passenger Transport Strategy in order to fully understand the contribution that these services make to the local economy, and their value in terms of community, health and well-being. The views and opinions of the public are vital to ensuring that the passenger transport services provided meet the needs of the community. In delivering services, the Council will, whenever they
can, communicate directly with the local community via their democratically elected County Councillor. The consultation period for Worcestershire’s Passenger Transport Strategy Consultation will end on Friday 13 September 2019. The Council would like to ask that those interested should take a few minutes to complete the online survey and give your feedback on the draft strategy. Feedback will then be analysed by Worcestershire County Council to inform the further development of the strategy, and a summary report will be published. To have your say, please visit www.worcestershire.gov.uk/ passengertransportstrategy.
Winning the Conservative Party leadership race by 66.4% of the vote, Boris Johnson’s first few weeks as Prime Minister were nothing short of action and change. Bromsgrove MP, Sajid Javid, was part of the major cabinet reshuffle within the Prime Minister’s first 24-hours. 11 cabinet Ministers were dismissed, with a further six resigning. Mr Javid was appointed as Secretary of State for the Home Office 14-months ago following Amber Rudd’s resignation, and his promotion to Chancellor of the Exchequer compliments his financial and international banking experience. Mr Javid was part of the initial leadership race earlier this year, announcing that there is a need to restore trust, bring unity and create new opportunities across the UK. His commitment to rebuilding trust between government and voters has been linked to the damaged relationship between Westminster and parts of the Midlands – where some have felt left behind where parliament has failed to deliver Brexit. Sharing his support on social media, Robin Walker MP tweeted: “Very proud to have nominated this man for the leadership, delighted to see him appointed to such a crucial role at the heart of government and great to have a Worcestershire neighbour in the Treasury.” We would like to congratulate Sajid Javid, and wish him the best in his new role and look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.
LOCAL COUNCILS DECLARE ‘CLIMATE EMERGENCY’ On Friday 8 March, and in keeping with several councils across the UK, Herefordshire Council declared a Climate Emergency following unanimous support of the motion. In declaring the climate emergency, the Council stated that among other priorities, it will commit to an accelerated reduction of the Council’s carbon emissions, with aspirations to be carbon neutral by 2030, and to change its energy supply to 100% renewable source.
In practical terms, the climate emergency will focus on reducing carbon emissions, more sustainable transport, making buildings more energy efficient and tackling how we dispose of waste. The announcements follow the national climate emergency declared by the UK parliament earlier this year, with dozens of local areas around the UK making the same commitment – with many saying they will strive to be carbon-neutral by 2030.
Councillors have also declared a climate emergency in Worcester, Bromsgrove and Malvern. The Councils join more than 100 local authorities who have decided to act now to help the environment, with similar discussions taking place in all remaining Councils across Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

BRIGHT FUTURES INITIATIVE LEADS PLASTIC FREE JOURNEY Bishop Fleming is committed to protecting the environment and operating as a sustainable business. The firm aims to minimise its carbon footprint by 5% per annum and continuously seeks opportunities to reduce energy consumption. Starting a plastic free journey in January 2019, Bishop Fleming’s Bright Futures initiative has been instrumental in driving a responsible approach to helping the environment. This year’s project is focussing on ‘giving back’, and the group has already helped the firm to be accredited as ‘Plastic Free Champions’ by conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage.
Bishop Fleming was awarded by the charity after removing six single-use plastics from across its seven offices. The firm is continuing to work to eliminate more plastic from across the business and have already got rid of items such as carrier bags, single-use coffee cups, and plastic straws. As well as removing single-use plastics, Bishop Fleming is actively taking part in local litter-picking, tree-planting initiatives, and beach cleans. The firm is actively tracking its environmental impact via a new eco-dashboard. www.bishopfleming.co.uk
VOLKERLASER ADDS ANOTHER GREEN EDGE TO ITS BUSINESS
GREEN GREAT BRITAIN WEEK ANNOUNCED FOR NOVEMBER 2019
Environmental aspects and impacts are increasingly becoming a focus of how we live our lives and influence the decisions we make. One area of huge importance is the issue of where our waste ends up. The staff at VolkerLaser’s two key offices in Worcester and Runcorn recently registered with Terracycle’s crisp packet recycling scheme to divert used crisp, nut and popcorn packets from landfill into useful products whilst supporting local charities.
Green Great Britain and Northern Ireland Week will be taking place from 4-8 November 2019, in conjunction with the government’s ‘Year of Green Action’ (YoGA).
Philip Bruce recently joined VolkerLaser as HSEQ Manager, and commented: "Environmental protection is of massive importance. Aside from the legal obligations by businesses, I think there are so many opportunities that we as individuals can take to help shape our greener future. Our particiption in this scheme may seem small but I think that small improvements by many every day can create large scale change over the long term. I am delighted by the enthusiam of our staff". www.volkerlaser.co.uk
FOUR STAFF MEMBERS CLOCK UP 120 YEARS OF SERVICE Four members of staff from Wyevale Nurseries in Hereford were recently presented with medals to honour their long service to the company. Andy Johnson, Chris Mason, John Sockett and Sheila Jackson all received bronze medals from the Three Counties Agricultural Society for 30 years continuous service. Heather Williamson, Joint Chairman at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “I would like to say congratulations to Andy, Chris, John and Sheila for receiving their long service awards. They have given a collective of 120 years of service to the business, which is simply amazing. We can’t thank them enough for their continued hard work and support. They are very skilled and dedicated staff members. We’re very lucky to have them as part of our team. Ken Nottage, Chief Executive of the Three Counties Agricultural Society, said: “The Three Counties Awards seek to champion the long-standing contributions made by horticulture and agricultural businesses such as Wyevale Nurseries to the communities of the Three Counties. Chris, Andy, John and Sheila should be extremely proud of their achievements.”
The week is dedicated to hosting events and activities where government, businesses, academia and civil society will come together to explore how clean growth will change our futures, and how we can contribute to action on climate change. Green GB & NI Week will highlight the opportunities, benefits and challenges of reducing our emissions to net zero, ending the UK’s contribution to climate change and growing its low carbon economy. The week is themed around how particular parts of life in the UK will evolve, such as having cleaner, warmer buildings, cleaner modes of transport, such as electric vehicles, and reducing our waste with new green technologies all over the UK. The full agenda and list of resources will be announced soon, but in the meantime those interested should visit www.greengb.campaign.gov.uk.

Your local, award winning legal experts MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR BUSINESS LAWYERS I’ve been a corporate transaction lawyer for 30 years and I love it – but I often think business owners are missing a trick by not involving their legal advisers more in their plans. I suspect the onus is on us, as lawyers, to demonstrate how we, as advisers, can work alongside our clients. Trust and communication is the key. How many times have you truly felt that your lawyers are part of your business team? Your accountant is often part of your team - why not your lawyer too? Maybe it’s because nowadays we lawyers tend to specialise but business owners tend not to differentiate between the different legal sectors. We are your “lawyer” and you look to us for legal advice. That means we can be your point of contact and involve our colleagues, and their specific expertise, as and when required. If you don’t feel that way perhaps you need to reconsider your relationship with your lawyers and look to get more out of it. The first thing to do is to be open minded and let us be part of your team. I will always aim to get to know clients and their businesses more and understand their short, medium and longer term plans as ultimately it helps me and my team provide the best service we can. However, sometimes I will sense a reticence, a distrust of why I am asking questions not apparently relevant to the task I am being asked to do. I know that feeling. When you walk into a car dealership, do you feel that the sales person that leaps up in front of you is just
Fiona Boxwell
wanting you to sign on the dotted line for the most expensive car currently available? Or do you, occasionally, find yourself talking to someone who wants to know what you drive now, and why? Why you want to change and what you want your next vehicle to be able to do for you? What are your priorities – your must have’s - and finally, and only then, what sort of budget do you have and what is the best way for you to finance your next acquisition? Once you have opened yourself up to trust a lawyer, if you find that you are being made to feel slightly stupid or blasted with jargon, don’t accept it, question it. It’s my job as a professional adviser not just to advise but to ensure that advice is clearly
understood so decisions can be made with the full facts and consequences being taken into account. That begins and ends with how I communicate with and treat you. If that car sales person came over as snooty or as simply reciting a script in a disinterested tone, I’d still end up leaving the dealership. You know your business and sector inside out, and you have asked your lawyer for advice because you are not a lawyer. If jargon is used that prevents you taking advantage of that advice then challenge them to explain better and if they can’t rise to that challenge find a lawyer who can. UNDERSTANDING CYBER SECURITY Businesses today face a barrage of daily cyber attacks, from spam and phishing to ransomware and malware. With an increasing number of high profile organisations making headlines due to significant data breaches and security failures, businesses who previously believed they were too small to be targeted, are now realising that they have never been more at risk. When it comes to cyber security, it is important to understand your organisations vulnerabilities, and most importantly how this can be prevented. Let’s take a look at 4 key areas you should consider;
ASSESS: Penetration testing is the best way to ensure that your network is secure from external attacks, and that your cyber security is able to withstand this. The purpose of a penetration test is to simulate a cyber attack to access your current security and highlight any vulnerability. After each penetration test a technical report will be issued, highlighting issues
08
and any routes that may be exploited by attackers, as well as making security recommendations.
employees and visitors, meaning they can only access the data they need.
PREVENTION:
Even with the best cyber security in place, a determined hacker may still find a way in to your systems. A robust Disaster Recovery or Backup plan can ensure you still have access to your data and systems, even in the event of a successful attack. A Backup system will periodically save your data to a secure location (on or off-site) bringing it back when you need it, whist Disaster Recovery will replicate your entire computing environment, including data, systems, network and applications making it available even when your primary environment is not.
Once cyber vulnerabilities have been identified, there are a number of security prevention technologies that can be implemented, providing real-time protection against network threats, as well as offering the latest and most advanced filtering and anti-spam systems. Prevention technology includes traditional methods such as firewalls, antivirus and intrusion detection, as well the use of private cloud environments, off-site backups and data management.
PROCESSES AND PEOPLE: Unfortunately staying secure is not as easy as simply purchasing security technology. Employees are often the weakest part of your security, from leaving passwords or devices unsecure to opening suspicious emails. Educating employees in cyber security should be the first step in tackling this, providing on-going training to ensure they are aware of the threats to your business. Training can be as simple as ensuring good password management, being cautious with unknown attachments or learning not to perform business tasks on unsecured networks. Further more, measures can be put in place that will limit privileges to
CONTINUITY:

Their privately owned IT infrastructure means they can provide businesses with their own private cloud environment, with dual data centres providing a full fail-over for a true disaster recovery solution. SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT – DOES IT MATTER? 20% of businesses said that they are interested in support to make their company more environmentally sustainable (QES Q4, 2018)
41% of businesses want to see improvements to the transport links via the road and rail network in Herefordshire and Worcestershire (QES Q4, 2018)
With so many businesses across Herefordshire and Worcestershire keen to see improvements to the road and rail infrastructure, the Chamber is pleased to announce its support for the Midlands Rail Hub. As part of £2 billion plan, the additional rail services in the two counties are some of the most ambitious for a generation. Passenger journeys in the West Midlands are growing faster than anywhere else in the country, and have risen by 121% over the past decade. However, without further investment the region’s rail network can’t keep pace with this record demand. Many services between major towns and cities in the Midlands remain slow and infrequent, including an average of 85 minutes between Hereford and Birmingham. This is why the Chamber is delighted to support the Midlands Rail Hub plans, submitted to government by Midlands Connect, which outline new and improved infrastructure to be completed between 2024-2033. The plans make space for 24 additional train services per hour, including an extra train every hour between Hereford, Worcester and Birmingham. An estimated six million more journeys per year and an estimated economic benefit of £649 million a year by 2037 are expected to occur. Hereford to Birmingham journey time could be cut by 20-65 minutes. Given that fewer than 30% of journeys from Hereford and Worcester to Birmingham are made by rail, the improvements to this infrastructure network are likely to improve road congestion and takes steps towards reducing reliance on less sustainable transport.
24 extra passenger trains every hour on the regional network will reduce journey times, increase rail journeys and supercharge the economy by bringing the East and West Midlands closer together.
By making space for 36 new freight paths a day, the Midlands Rail Hub can take the equivalent of 4,320 lorries’ worth of goods off the road and on to rail every day, significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Rail freight produces 76% less CO2 than the equivalent road haulage journey1.

FUELLING BUSINESS GROWTH Ben Mannion explains how Hewett Recruitment is using its recruitment expertise to fuel its own business growth… One of the biggest challenges that business across the UK have faced in recent years is securing the talent that will support their future growth plans. This is not just limited to ensuring a company can continue to provide the services they already supply but also about identifying individuals who will lead an organisation through the next generation. Hewett Recruitment provides help and support regarding these key issues to a wide client base across the local area and nationally. Since the establishment of the IT and Engineering divisions a decade ago, they have gradually developed to become key parts of the Hewett offering. Whilst there is no doubt that we have some uncertain times ahead – with the impact of any type of Brexit still to be understood and the Office for National Statistics recently announcing the first contraction in the UK economy since 2012 – the development of automation, robotics, Artificial Intelligence and machine learning also present a huge amount of opportunities. In order to meet the demands of clients and expand in to new areas, Hewett have begun its latest round of growth with the recruitment of 3 more members of the IT and Engineering teams, with more to follow.
Ben Mannion
012
The 3 new recruits will all be starting with the business in September. Alice has over 2 years IT recruitment experience and will be focusing on PHP Development in the West Midlands, whilst Luke, a newcomer to recruitment will be fast-tracked through Hewett’s in-house training plan, also within the IT sector, focusing on Infrastructure, Support and Testing in Gloucestershire and the South West. Rachel meanwhile joins with over 4 years’ experience resourcing roles within the Engineering sector across the UK and will be supporting the continued expansion of this division. In seeking out these new team members, Hewett have used all the various tools available, from traditional advertising through to head-hunting via LinkedIn. As many organisations will know, this can sometimes appear to be the easy part – identifying individuals who also buy in to the ethos of the company can be a more tricky endeavour. In line with this, revisiting the vision and values of the business when putting together the new growth plans was a vital part of the process. This secures buy in from the existing team members whilst ensuring all future recruitment occurs in line with the company values. Furthermore, Industrial Temp and Commercial Temp and Permanent recruitment remain integral parts of the services provided by the Hewett team; specialist, long-serving Consultants in these sectors meaning we can continue to offer a full-service solution to our clients and candidates.
The final piece of the puzzle has to be ensuring that your people have everything they need to do their jobs to the best of their ability. Along with new recruits, there will be continued training and development of all staff members as well as identifying where the aforementioned automation and developments in technology can enhance the top-level service that Hewett already provides. New office space to accommodate the ambitious growth plans are also a top priority. The net result? A business that is ready for the next phase of growth and the challenges that this can bring. Ben Mannion, Director, commented: “Next year sees Hewett Recruitment celebrate 40 years in business. The new growth plans are designed for Hewett to stay at the forefront of the rapidly changing recruitment landscape whilst not forgetting what our founder, Louise, built the business on and what made us great in the first place!” If you would like to find out more about the services and solutions that Hewett Recruitment provide then please contact Ben Mannion on ben@hewett-recruitment.co.uk www.hewett-recruitment.co.uk

When speaking about the 2018 Gold ERS winners, Minister for Defence People and Veterans Tobias Ellwood said: “The breadth and diversity of this year’s winners shows how business support for the armed forces continues to flourish. WHAT LONG-TERM SUSTAINABLE OPTIONS ARE COMPANIES EXPLORING? Gowling WLG has taken an ambitious stance, adopting six challenging goals in 2017, including zero carbon and zero waste by 2030, and aspiring to be sustainability leaders. Getting its own house in order is just the start - achieving the vision relies on many elements outside of its control including strong political will and technical innovation. "Environmental stewardship is not a choice, it makes moral and business sense", Mary Mackintosh, General Counsel & Board Ambassador for the environment. A common misconception is that office-based businesses including law firms have limited environmental impact, and little opportunity to act beyond switching the lights off and recycling. The goals are being implemented with guidance from Gowling’s in-house environmental
JMDA’S GRAND QUEEN’S AWARD PRESENTATION On Wednesday 17 July at its Head Office in Pershore, Worcestershire, JMDA Design was presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2019 for International Trade by The Hon Lady Morrison, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire, surrounded by Worcestershire dignitaries. The Vice Lord-Lieutenant The Hon Lady Morrison awarded a Grant of Appointment to JMDA in recognition of winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2019 for International Trade and presented an engraved glass trophy and a scroll signed by Her Majesty The Queen.
Gowling has 21 objectives currently in place including a 20% by 2020 building energy reduction target. Action taken to reduce energy demand has already contributed to a 23% fall in carbon emissions (by April 2018, on 2016 baseline), with even greater savings expected this year.
A summer's afternoon at the JMDA Design offices was the picture-perfect location to receive the highest achievement for services to international trade. With the CEO of Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, Sharon Smith, and the Lord and Lady Mayoress of Pershore, to name just a few dignitaries in attendance, the presentation signified 27 years’ of ground-breaking, innovative design of children’s car safety seats.

AMBITIOUS VISION OF CYBER INNOVATION, RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT UNVEILED AT 3CDSE Delegates at 3CDSE heard that specialist support and training would be on offer from centre experts even before the awaited 2,000 sq ft cyber security building is opened, via the university’s Business Solutions Centre on Skylon Park. Herefordshire, and the wider Marches region, has this year been recognised as being part of the UK’s largest cluster of cyber security activity outside London in a Science and Innovation Audit published by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Andrew Manning Cox, Chairman of the 016
Hereford Enterprise Zone, said: “Whether it’s the hacking of websites, theft of confidential data, the spread of fake news by foreign powers to influence elections, or the NHS having its systems compromised, it’s clear that the security of our digital infrastructure has never been under greater threat. The expertise and specialist focus of the centre will help address these issues, and be part of a wider, growing campus of cyber sector companies based within the Cyber Quarter on Skylon Park.” www.wlv.ac.uk

Modern Monitoring & Response Centre based in Wyre Forest, Worcs.
Rupert Lawrence, Head of amica24
WORCESTERSHIRE TELECARE ANNOUNCED AMICA24 AS THE NEW BRAND NAME FOR THEIR TECHNOLOGY ENABLED CARE, MONITORING AND RESPONSE SERVICE FROM 7 OCTOBER 2019. Based in the Wyre Forest district of Worcestershire, the company which is part of The Community Housing Group, delivers services to over 100 organisations including housing associations and local authorities and around 25,000 customers across the UK. Its services have been recognised for their outstanding quality through accreditation to the TEC Services Association's Quality Standards Framework and has been assessed as Green (Fully Compliant), the highest level within the framework's assessment grading. “Our reputation for delivering exceptional standards of service has enabled us to grow the business in geographical areas outside of the Worcestershire postcode. The name, Worcestershire Telecare is confusing to new and potential customers” said Head of Service, Rupert Lawrence. “We believe that amica24, derived from the Latin word for friend, better reflects the nature of our service. We are the friendly but professional voice at the end of the alarm call, 24 hours a day” amica24 will enable the company to further develop their range of technology enabled care products, sensors and alarms which are designed to support independent living within the home. Their experience of being a leading advocate for assistive technology has
helped them to develop a holistic model for advance care and support services. Working closely with the NHS on schemes such as “home from hospital” (where discharged patients receive support through the use of telecare alarms) has provided the company with valuable insight into how they can support health and care professionals to manage the care of patients in a more efficient, modern and dynamic way. “We are large enough to offer efficiencies with competitive pricing structures whilst maintaining a tailored attentive approach that can often be lost when services are provided by large call centres” explained Rupert Lawrence. “Our Monitoring and Response Centre is run by a team of specially trained operators who can offer support and advice not only to customers who have triggered an alarm call but to customers using the centre to contact their landlord for repairs services or other tenancy matters. They also manage lone worker protection services and the monitoring of assistive technology sensors” The team use the Eden Alternative Philosophy which is based on the core belief that ageing should be a continued stage of development and growth, rather than a period of decline. In practice, when responding to an alarm call, the team will consider if there are other factors which may have resulted in the call being made (from changes in mobility or health to loneliness) and if other solutions could be put in place rather than just focus on clearing the call.
Business Direction published by Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce
With the customer’s permission, they can then then make referrals or signpost the customer to partner agencies and voluntary organisations or suggest other technological solutions. “We are very careful when introducing new equipment and technology into our range” said Rupert Lawrence. “We will test it thoroughly in our specially adapted showcase apartment, which helps us to assess how it performs in real life situations. “He explained that not all products tested are adopted and that the showcase has also been used by equipment and sensor manufacturers in final development stages of a new product. The show flat is available for existing and potential customers to interact with the technologies and offers the opportunity to demonstrate how they can support many conditions including dementia, epilepsy, COPD and muscular dystrophy. “It’s a very exciting time to be working within the technology enabled care sector as new solutions are emerging all the time. It gives our customers and their supporters greater hope for independence as well as delivering substantial monetary and efficiency savings for the care providers at a time when budgets are being stretched” To arrange a visit to the showcase facility in Kidderminster, contact Mark Bywater, Commercial Development Officer on 01562 733162. www.amica24.org

YOUNG ENTERPRISE TEAM PROGRESS TO NATIONAL FINALS Earlier this year, it was revealed that Worcester Sixth Form College’s Young Enterprise team, Athena, won Best Company at the West Midlands Regional Final before progressing to the national finals in London in June. The scale of their achievement is underlined by the fact that this was the first time in 17 years that a group from South Worcestershire has reached the national finals. The Worcester Sixth Form College team also scooped prestigious awards for the innovation and creativity of their product, ‘My Amego’ which is a children’s toy that promotes mental wellbeing and builds emotional and communicative skills. A huge congratulations is in order for the team who were runners-up, with further congratulations for Yasmin Li, Athena’s Managing Director, who won the Outstanding Achievement Award. WHAT HAPPENS TO MY BUSINESS IF I DIE? I am the only director and shareholder of my company and I am told that if I died this could cause a huge problem. Why? If you are a sole director and shareholder of a company incorporated pre-October 2009 then there is likely to be an issue. Companies set up under the 1985 Companies Act generally have articles which prevent a new director being appointed by your executors before probate is granted - something which is not a quick or simple process. Consequently, the company could be left without a director in the interim to manage
the business, sign documents and cheques, or even direct bank transfers. If you think this could apply to you, we can draft bespoke articles allowing your executors to appoint a new director on death, meaning minimal disruption. For an initial discussion readers can contact Jack Morley, a solicitor in the mfg Corporate team on 01562 820181 or via email jack. morley@mfgsolicitors.com. www.mfgsolicitors.com
HOW GREEN IS YOUR BUSINESS? Worcester-based B Smith Packaging is pleased to be constantly on the lookout for alternatives to the plastic problem, helping local companies in eradicating single-use packaging.
PARALYMPIAN AND FORMER GULF WAR PRISONER TO SPEAK AT NEW EVENT A Paralympic athlete will speak at a Worcestershire business event this September which will focus on raising funds for two county charities. Wheelchair middle-distance racer Mel Nicholls, who was a finalist at the London 2012 games and a World Championship silver medallist, has linked up with the Worcestershire Ambassadors who are hosting the event on Saturday 26 September at Hogarth’s Stone Manor near Kidderminster. The lunch, which will also feature former RAF pilot and 1991 Gulf War prisoner of war, John Peters, will raise funds for the Worcester Community Trust and St Paul’s Hostel.
Many of B Smith Packaging’s clients are changing from paper to plastic in the trend that is hitting national and independent businesses worldwide – with over 40% now sourcing alternatives. Some of its closest customers like Blue Diamond Group and 3 Shires Garden Centre have moved to recycled bags made from plastic bottles eliminating the already existing issue. The recycled bags also degrade and are safe to both animals and plant life. Others, like the National Trust, have gone for fully compostable potato starch bags. Many coffee drinkers also want something that is compostable, and therefore has no lining, so are looking for alternatives such as sugarcane, corn and potato starch. It is important that all businesses consider how they source their packaging, with more sustainable options becoming available all the time. Don’t forget to do your research – B Smith Packaging is always happy to have an informal chat over coffee (non-plastic of course and fully compostable). www.bsmithpackaging.co.uk
Kevin Powell, chair of the Worcestershire Ambassadors said: “Our event in September is the chance for people to come along, network and have the rare opportunity to hear from two inspirational people like Mel and John. To have them attending is the icing on the cake and both have overcome so much during their lives. We hope as many people as possible will attend.” Tickets for the event can be purchased online at www.worcestershireambassadors.com.

DESIGN AGENCY SUPPORTS UK BREAKTHROUGH FOR GLOBAL COFFIN MAKER Artwork by brand design specialist Wondrous has been credited with helping to deliver a significant breakthrough in the UK for global environmentally-friendly coffin manufacturer LifeArt. The creative agency, based in Hagley, north Worcestershire, was appointed by LifeArt Coffins UK Ltd to develop artwork for its exhibition stand at the National Funeral Exhibition, which took place in early June, in Warwickshire. FINANCE SKILLS FOR NON FINANCE MANAGERS A regular within our course portfolio, our Finance Skills course has had a slight refresh and is back with a brand new trainer.
WORKPLACE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS A new course added into our portfolio as a result of our training tender in August 2018. Delivered by Steps to Work, this Mental Health Awareness course provides participants with comprehensive knowledge and confidence of how to support, recognise and sign-post a person in the workplace who is suffering with mental ill health. Our trainers are all Mental Health trained through Mental Health First Aid England and have comprehensive knowledge along with an empathic and understanding approach towards mental health. This course is aimed at those who want to gain the necessary skills to have an open conversation and recognise the signs and symptoms of common workplace mental health issues. This full day course is taking place from our Worcester office on Thursday 31 October, with a handful of places still available.

Now delivered by Chamber Patrons, Bishop Fleming, this one day course is suitable for delegates wanting an understanding of basic account principles and how to apply them. A sell out in December 2018 and May 2019, we have now scheduled in a new date for Tuesday 3 September, book in early to secure your place.
Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce is proud to be one of the first training providers across the country to deliver this course. With two successful and popular courses already delivered so far this year, we are pleased to announce a third date, taking place on Monday 23 September.
MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID CHAMPION Developed and accredited by Mental Health First Aid England this one day course qualifies delegates as Mental Health First Aid Champions. This awareness and skills course teaches delegates how to recognise the main signs and symptoms of common mental health issues, provide initial support and develop an understanding of how they can create and maintain a healthier workforce or community. Our last course for 2019 is taking place on Wednesday 16 October – keep your eyes peeled for 2020 dates coming soon!
JOHN LEGGE’S IT TO 1ST PLACE Most of you will recognise John Legge as our Microsoft Office whiz trainer, and whilst it’s normally Excel that we associate John with - it appears he wears another training hat. This time, it’s his hobby of being a triathlete. John was recently awarded 1st place in his Age Group at the Ludlow 10k in what he termed as a tough but interesting run. In his own words, ‘the outdoor’ training balances the indoor Excel computer type of training. The Chamber would like to congratulate John on his success.

BIGINTERVIEW
MANAGING WASTE BETTER Step through the doors of EnviroSort, the Materials Reclamation Facility at Norton, near Worcester, and you may be surprised by the vast quantities of recyclables (from householder’s green bins) delivered and loaded onto the conveyor belts. All of the recyclables pass through a pre-sort cabin first, where items which cannot obviously be recycled are removed by hand. From here, the materials drop onto a glass breaker. The initial fall smashes the glass allowing the small pieces of glass to fall through gaps between rotating disks onto a conveyor belt underneath. The rest of the recyclables surf over the top to the ballistic separators. These house an inclined walking floor which goes up and down as well, so that 2D objects, such as paper and card, are carried one way,
whilst 3D objects, such as tins and plastics, roll and bounce down the floor to be taken another way. The 3D objects then travel through a series of magnets, where magnetic steel cans are removed by a positive magnet and non-magnetic aluminium cans are repelled by an eddy current.
conglomerates, FCC (Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA) and Urbaser, S.A – who have a wealth of experience in the provision of waste management worldwide.
Finally, the materials which are left, plastics, pass through optical sorters. These are beams of light which identify and sort the plastics into polymer type.
Since signing an initial 25-year contract with Worcestershire County Council and Herefordshire Council in December 1998, Severn Waste Services have developed facilities which have dramatically helped reduce the amount of waste going to landfill from 90% to just under 10%.
Once the materials have been sorted, they are baled ready for reprocessing. Over 70,000 tonnes of recyclables are processed at EnviroSort each year – enough to fill 3,128 double-decker buses.
Education and outreach work has been a crucial component of this success, with Education and Communications Officer Michelle James, taking the helm in educating people about recycling.
But who operates this remarkable recycling Plant? Severn Waste Services are contracted to manage the safe disposal of household waste from across Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
“We offer community groups and schools across the two counties the chance to visit us here at our EnviroSort Plant. Visitors make use of our purpose-built education room and see the Plant in action – and if by any chance they can’t come to us, we’re happy to visit them too. All of our visits and talks are free and my calendar is always busy.

“We make things as hands-on as possible, with children taking part in sorting games, for instance. It’s all about understanding what can be recycled, where it goes once it’s collected and what it’s turned into. As well as schools, scouts, guides and brownies, community groups such as Probus, U3A, WI and charities account for a high percentage of visitors. “People are usually pretty amazed to see the sheer scale of the work that goes on here, from the sorting machines to the bales of recyclables, like aluminium cans and plastic. Although we manage household waste, our visitors have often learnt how to better manage waste in their businesses too. “Advertising campaigns can be seen on our vehicles which show what can be recycled, often highlighting unusual items people don’t realise can be recycled. We also constantly update our website to keep the public informed. “Waste management is the name given to everything that happens to waste from where it is first generated to where it’s finally safely disposed of, including the collection, transportation, processing and recycling. BIGINTERVIEW waste is all about being as environmentally friendly as possible. Reducing and reusing waste should be the priority. “When looking to be more environmentally friendly, the best thing people can do is to reduce the waste they create. I always say, think about the waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle. First, reduce what you use, then consider how you can re-use items before finally recycling them. “The fashion industry is a big polluter of the planet so think about donating your clothes to charity shops or ‘upcycling’ them to make something new. “Food waste is a major concern. The best thing you can do to cut down on food waste is to plan your meals for the week ahead, make a list and shop solely for those ingredients – thereby cutting down on over-buying and waste. As individuals, we can help by making small, but significant changes. “EnviRecover, our Energy from Waste facility at Hartlebury in Worcestershire, is one of only 32 in the country, meaning the vast majority of waste from residents’ black wheelie bins can be put to good use. Hardly anything goes to landfill and the recovered energy is fed back into the national grid. “Even the resulting ash is checked with a magnet for the presence of ferrous metals, whilst every year, the remaining stockpiled ash is checked for non-ferrous metals. We’re also investigating the possibility of using the remaining material as an aggregate for building blocks. “Even our landfill site is put to good use, with the methane gas produced, captured and converted into electricity too. It’s all about treating waste as a resource. “In addition to helping the environment, we are going to put our recycling efforts to good use in August by raising money for Acorns Children’s Hospice.” www.severnwaste.com

IT ASSET RECYCLING One company going from strength to strength is Kidderminster-based Greensafe IT. Formed just seven years ago, they are a market-leading IT services and secure recycling business, helping local and international companies replace and dispose of their IT assets safely. Inspired by a desire to join up the fragmented IT industry, Greensafe delivers a full supply chain solution, from the receipt, storage and distribution of IT equipment, to decommissioning and secure returns logistics; whether for a single computer or a whole data centre. Their complete IT lifecycle solution, means their service offering is seamless, coordinated and secure. Greensafe’s accreditations make them one of the most highly certified IT service and recycling companies in the UK, from their carbon neutral status to their ISO 27001 standard. They are an Environment Agency Registered Waste Carrier and a supplier to the Crown Commercial Service – which speaks volumes about their robust processes, security and quality. “For companies grappling with their IT equipment disposal, I would say begin by putting in place an IT asset disposal policy and guidelines for employees, ensuring compliancy with the WEEE directive and GDPR,” explains Business Development Manager, Kelvin Robson. “Identifying the person with overall responsibility for IT assets is imperative. “The WEEE (Waste, Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive is important environmental legislation
that everyone should be aware of and essentially means that anything requiring a plug or battery for operation, must be stored, transported and recycled correctly. “Fluorescent light tubes and many types of batteries are hazardous too and require specialist treatment, recycling and recovery techniques. The mercury contained within fluorescent tubes means they must be recycled in a controlled environment, with the mercury safely recovered through a distillation process for reuse. “To put things in perspective, a single drop of mercury could contaminate 30,000 litres of water beyond a safe drinking level. Batteries are complex to recycle and a severe potential fire risk, which adds complexity to the disposal process and means you need to speak to experts for the right processes to be in place in terms of storage, collection and recycling. “We recycle all manner of office and non-IT waste products, including packaging. Disposing and recycling all waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), including white goods, batteries of all types and other hazardous and non-hazardous material.” Greensafe offer a wealth of services through their six divisions. Everything from waste and recycling, IT spares and logistics, global hardware sales, leasing and buy-back, to complete supply chain services and IT asset disposal. “A lot of businesses keep hold of redundant IT equipment, not really knowing how to deal with it; taking up precious space; as well as posing a huge data and security risk. Every business should consider the waste hierarchy: Prevention, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle all
before Disposal, as well as keep an asset register, so all IT equipment within the company can be tracked. “People need to be fully aware of the number of devices that have a memory, holding commercial or personal data. The Internet of Things (IoT) and the growing use of connected devices mean there is a greater potential for data breaches or loss. All data needs to be erased and destroyed securely – Greensafe offer secure accredited processes with certification for each device. “Going to site, we decommission redundant IT equipment, then deliver and install new. All decommissioned IT equipment is securely datawiped before being reused or alternatively we can destroy the data bearing item and recycle the kit in accordance with all current legislation.” Collectively, the skilled team has wiped clean and destroyed more than 1.5million hard disks, removed more than 3,500 populated rack cabinets and destroyed more than 175,342 data tapes. “We also offer a buy-back service, so customers can offset the cost of their new equipment or donate to charity; whichever their preference. 80% of materials are reclaimed for reuse and what remains is recycled. Greensafe abide to a strict 0% landfill policy." ACHIEVING NET ZERO EMISSIONS The inspiration behind renewable energy company Caplor was an epiphany which came about when a global challenge became deeply personal. Farmer Gareth Williams returned from a trip to Africa to find the UK in the throes of a very wet summer. The year was 2007, unprecedented rainfall together with flooding was experienced in regions including Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Whilst the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was raising awareness of the global climate crisis. For Gareth, whose family had farmed in Fownhope, Hereford since 1923, preserving the environment for his young family and subsequent generations was imperative. A global and personal challenge coalesced and galvanised personal action. In looking for sustainable solutions for the farm, Gareth soon became aware of the benefit and opportunity of renewable energy and founded Caplor Energy. An environmentally friendly company offering environmental products, system installation, services and advice, Caplor focuses on commercial, community and residential clients. A decade later, the science of climate change is widely accepted and renewable energy, once a niche area, is tested and mainstream. Caplor now operates all over the country. In the intervening years, the 2008 Climate Change Act and various government led incentives paved the way for a low carbon economy. Whilst, the UK’s Committee on Climate Change emphasised the major role businesses play in achieving net zero emissions, following the international Paris commitment in 2015. “We are all responsible for the environment and collectively need to take a more active role in protecting it and our future,” explains Gareth. “Ultimately, businesses are led by people and it is people that have plundered the earth’s resources to such an extent we find ourselves amid a climate crisis. “Accepted science estimates we have just 12 years to mitigate the worst effects of climate change, but the good news is we can take actions that are good for our environment and our bottom lines. There are simple, straightforward steps
businesses can take to cut their carbon footprint, like changing light bulbs for LED versions and improving insulation. Even the time at which your staff travel or how you make deliveries can make significant savings and improve productivity. “Consider longer term goals and benefits too, like the amount you’ll spend on electricity over the coming years, versus investing in renewable energy, like solar panels and batteries to store the generated energy. Investing in renewable energy is far more advantageous as illustrated by the BNP Paribas report, businesses become more sustainable, power loads are shifted to when they’re needed, you’re protected from rising energy costs and benefit from a good long term economic return. “Embracing renewable energy and becoming more energy efficient has great benefits. The Carbon Trust recently highlighted that a 20% cut in energy costs represents the same bottom line benefit as a 5% increase in sales in many businesses. It’s about managing businesses differently. “Reducing carbon emissions by utilising renewable energy, supports greater productivity and business growth. Any saving on energy costs is money that will remain in the business and the region. Green investment represents a huge opportunity, both in terms of greater
Business Direction published by Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce
efficiency and in offering commercial opportunities. “Advice is available from sources including the Low Carbon Opportunities Programme and the Business Energy Efficiency Programme. An energy audit is a good place to start and these are often offered for free, with grants available in some instances to implement the recommendations. “Renewable energy has evolved enormously over the last decade, from energy-capturing technology like solar PV to the ability to store it with advanced battery technology, from the use of solar thermal for hot water to rapidly evolving solutions like renewable heating. The latter involves heat pumps that take heat out of the atmosphere, working with temperatures as low as minus - 20°C, then circulating it within a property, providing up to 300% efficient and clean heating. We hope to see it integrated mandatorily into new-build homes and retrofits. “At Caplor, we’re committed to a renewable future and practice what we preach, with a lot of renewable energy sources installed on the farm. We’re happy to arrange visits so people can see the technology in action and discuss what they could do to start or develop their sustainable journey.” caplor.co.uk

SOLAR PV INSTALLATION AT FIRST SERVICE FROZEN FOODS The first business to receive a grant through the Low Carbon Opportunities Programme was First Service Frozen Foods, an ice cream manufacturer based on the Harris Business Park in Stoke Prior. First Service has already taken many steps over a number of years to reduce their environmental impact and high electricity usage. However, due to the cooling requirements for ice cream, their electricity usage remained high. Installing a solar PV array to generate their own electricity was therefore a logical next step, and the firm were delighted when the opportunity to apply for a grant towards the capital cost of the system was offered. The business was able to install a 24 kWp solar array, with a total of 96 solar panels installed. The system will save £2,250 and 8 tonnes of carbon per year. The
business received a grant of just under £10,000 towards the cost of the system. This grant was funded by the Low Carbon Opportunities Programme, which is partially funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
Following payment from us to Caplor and us claiming our grant funding it only took 2 weeks to receive the funding which should further appeal to anyone applying."
Wayne Sambidge, from First Service, commented, "The Low Carbon Opportunities Programme is our fourth grant through Worcestershire CC and was the easiest to apply for.

Applying for the grant really couldn't have been any easier following our initial meeting with Ruth and Don who assisted us with the application and then through to us receiving our grant acceptance. Due to receiving our grant acceptance our installation plans were revised as we were able to increase from 48 to 96 255W panels. Installation has now been completed and Caplor Energy, our chosen suppliers, who I highly recommend, were fantastic updating us at every stage of the process. The installation process only took 6 days.

THERE ARE MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORCESTERSHIRE COMPANIES TO GO GREEN, REDUCE THEIR CARBON FOOTPRINT AND IMPROVE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE. Three programmes run by Worcestershire County Council and funded by the European Regional Development Fund, can support businesses with everything from reducing energy usage and generating renewable energy to improving land for wildlife. The Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP) can support your business to reduce your energy usage. As the days get shorter and the heating goes on, it's a great time to consider how much you spend on energy and what it costs our environment. BEEP advisors can recommend measures such as replacement lighting or new boilers to reduce your energy spend and impact. Once you know how to reduce your energy, you can apply for a grant to undertake the recommendations. Grants of up to 40% towards a project mean that your investment may pay back in only a couple of years. The Low Carbon Opportunities Programme supports the installation of renewable energy systems. Over the last three years, the programme has supported the installation of 17 solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and air source heat pumps at two sites. The renewable energy systems installed will reduce carbon emissions by more than 500 tonnes per year. As with BEEP, once you have found out the best renewable energy system for your business, you can apply for a grant to help you install it. Bromsgrove business First Service Frozen Foods were one of the first to benefit from the programme, and were delighted with the service, as Wayne Sambidge explained: "The Low Carbon Opportunities Programme is our fourth grant through Worcestershire County Council and was the easiest to apply for. Applying for the grant really couldn’t have been any easier following our initial meeting".

There is also support available through the Low Carbon Opportunities Programme for entrepreneurs and businesses which are developing the low carbon technologies of the future. The programme has given out over £250,000 of grant funding towards the development of 10 innovations, seeking to ensure that these products and services succeed in the marketplace. Alex Baker, of CleanCar, an innovative business seeking to accelerate the transition to electric mobility from fossil fuel dependency, said "the Low Carbon Opportunities Grant was a game changer", ensuring that the development of their CleanCar GPS system could take place. CleanCar aims to support both businesses and private motorists in making the transition to electric vehicles as easy as possible. As this phase of the Low Carbon Opportunities Programme comes to an end, the success of the programme is clear. We are delighted to announce that the programme will be restarting in the autumn with three more years of funding to support businesses in Worcestershire and Shropshire.

SO...WHAT NOW? “When was the last time you had to stop and think ‘So...what now?’ about work?
It was literally our name above the door, so it had to be right!
“It happened to me for the first time in July - genuinely, the first time since leaving university in 2003. That’s 16 years ago...BambooBar was still open in Worcester, Facebook wasn’t all that and TV was a lot less Love Island and lot more Fame Academy.
“To anyone who’s been through the process of having the thing you’ve always done suddenly stop and then moved on and found your next new thing...I applaud you. In fact, I’d love to buy you a drink and hear that story (seeming as I’ve got a bit of free time at the moment!)”
“I was at Free Radio, which had been WyvernFM before it, where I’d been the breakfast show and then drive time host. Before that, I’d worked for six-years doing the same thing at a different station. In both roles there had always been progress, ambition and plans for the next 12-month contract...until this year when, after a fantastic leaving show with its own live mobile disco, that day-to-day appointment just ceased to exist.

BUSINESS ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAMME (BEEP)
“So...what now? One thing I do feel is that radio presenters have a lot to offer away from the studio. Behind the scenes, so much falls on us to promote, engage with and sometimes defend our brand. We’ve had to think hard, quite often on the hop, to make what we say on air relatable, engaging and creative. We’ve had to get to grips with social media to run almost a second show alongside our radio one and because of the personable nature of radio.
NEW SOCIAL MEDIA CAFE CLINICS COME TO EVESHAM Natasha Wooldridge of Modest Marketing launched her Social Media Cafe Clinics on 1 May and they’ve been an instant success, providing businesses with supportive, informal training along with the opportunity to network and share ideas about social media marketing. The cafe clinics are held fortnightly in Evesham’s new Picture House Cafe & Bar with each session focusing on a different social media marketing topic. Natasha gives tips and advice and attendees contribute with ideas and their questions. Natasha says: “The cafe clinics provide a valuable alternative to attending a workshop, which usually involves a significant time and financial investment.
It’s great to sit round a table with a group of other local businesses and come up with ideas to help each other with social media marketing.”
A new three year Business Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP) has been launched to provide eligible companies with technical support to identify ‘carbon’ saving projects and grant funding of up to £20,000 and 40% of project costs to implement them. In addition to energy saving opportunities, BEEP now covers wider resource efficiency measures. The last round of BEEP supported over 300 companies and delivered £1.9m worth of savings and carbon dioxide savings equivalent to driving a car 18.5 million miles. One company that benefited was Worcester based cyber security specialist, Titania who cut energy costs by 22%. A £15,000 BEEP grant supported replacing windows, upgrading lighting, modernising boiler and improving heating controls. A wide range of projects can be funded including traditional energy efficiency measures such as heating and lighting upgrades. Investment in production equipment that uses less energy or reduces raw material usage by reducing scrap can also be eligible. www.business-central.co.uk/beep

HOW MALVERN PANALYTICAL IS PAVING THE WAY FOR A PLASTIC FREE WORKPLACE
A look inside: The Orchard
Malvern is now looking forward to introducing phase 2 of the Solar Project
Back in July, Dawn Hardman, Director of HR, and Lucy Allen, PR Executive, from the Chamber of Commerce were thrilled to be invited to The Orchard, Malvern Panalytical’s brand new on-site catering facility. Malvern Panalytical, formerly Malvern Instruments, is a scientific instrument manufacturer based in the Enigma Business Park, and recently underwent a major refurbishment of its offices and factory. The £4m investment has created a state-of-the-art working environment which includes global conferencing facilities, break-out areas and cutting-edge manufacturing and assembly areas. The latest addition is the on-site catering facility run by Blue Apple, focusing on providing good quality and nutritious food which generates minimal waste and limits the use of plastic. As well as providing a mouth-watering selection of food for everyone to enjoy, The Orchard fits in well with the company’s dedication to creating a more sustainable workplace. Employees were gifted with reusable water bottles and
034
coffee mugs to celebrate the launch, and to help support in the elimination of single-use plastics. Everyone who uses the facility also has access to plates and cutlery to reduce Malvern Panalytical’s eco footprint. A tour of Malvern Panalytical’s inspiring premises also revealed more about its dedication to being environmentally friendly. On every floor you will see bins that encourage colleagues to recycle - and think about how they dispose of their rubbish. The company also composts all garden waste on-site, and collects crisp packets to raise funds for a local Hedgehog charity – an idea that came about through discussions with staff. Facilities and Compliance Manager, Paul Prosser, added that Malvern Panalytical views the work environment as a key resource to attract and retain the calibre of staff it needs to sustain and grow its business. Recent sustainability improvements include the full installation of a solar system, from local installer Caplor Energy. During the first two-weeks of going live, the company reduced its KW usage by 1000 KW a week, saving the environment the equivalent of: Four barrels of crude oil 31,000 mile-trip in an electric car
20g of nuclear waste One oak tree 134,000 miles on a Segway Malvern is now looking forward to introducing phase 2 of the Solar Project to include an additional 20 KW to the current system. Conversations over lunch in The Orchard also led to interesting discussions of the importance of sustainable businesses checking that their partners are also being ‘green’. For example, Malvern encourages its supply chain to be environmentally friendly by placing restrictions on the types of packaging materials that it is supplied with. Further commitments include working in conjunction with BIFFA to progress its recycling policies and facilities to allow Malvern to ensure that 0% of its waste ends up in landfill. Many of the improvements are linked to Malvern Panalytical’s role as an active corporate citizen, and a promise to be mindful of its environmental impact ensuring that the way it does business is as meaningful as the products it manufactures. For more information about Malvern Panalytical, please visit www.malvernpanalytical.com. With thanks to Isla Buchanan, Natalie Chatley, Paul Prosser and Kevin Jones.

VISITWORCESTERSHIRE
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Sustainable tourism is about visitors and businesses making a positive impact on the environment, society and economy. It is important that businesses install systems to become more sustainable, as well as guide their visitors to use these processes, and advise on reducing their impact.
GREEN GLAMPING When Canvas and Clover opened 5 years ago, creating a sustainable business was at the heart of its planning process. A growing number of UK holidaymakers consider supporting sustainable tourism when choosing a holiday destination. According to the latest report from World Travel Market, almost 40% see it as an important factor, so the decision made commercial sense. Being in rural Worcestershire on a working farm creating somewhere that fits with the local environment was vital. “The Green Tourism accreditation scheme provided expertise and knowledge for us to put in place systems that fit with the sustainable tourism best practice. Achieving the Gold Award was important to us, it is recognised worldwide, it gave us an authentic credibility for what we were achieving and it is the highest accreditation for Green Tourism in the UK.” To achieve Gold Award status, Canvas and Clover has solar and LED lighting, recycling systems that are easy for visitors to use and it promotes wildlife education to visitors by installing a bug hotel and a natural coppice to encourage a variety of wildlife. Canvas and Clover also made fire pits out of old washing machine drums for visitors to use, the breakfast baskets are sourced from within a 10-mile radius and they only use natural, environmentally friendly cleaning products within the campsite. There are challenges, but it is possible to save money and save the planet. www.canvasandclover.com
WHY STAY-CATIONS ARE BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT In today’s era of huge climate change awareness, people are becoming increasingly aware of their need to minimise their impact upon the environment, including during their holidays.

Here at OLPRO, we are noticing an increase in the number of families choosing camping as their summer break, over flying abroad. Camping uses far less C02 than other forms of travel, with less fuel to reach a campsite, and less consumed while there. If you’re wild camping or camping without Electric Hook Ups, your energy use is virtually nil during your holiday. It also gives
PROTECTING ANIMALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT Many threats to wildlife are sadly a result of human activities such as the destruction of habitats, pollution or climate change. Therefore, whilst all good businesses try to operate in a sustainable way, it is even more important for a business such as a Safari Park. West Midland Safari Park has a sustainability committee who work to ensure that they take the environment into account in every aspect of what they do. They keep track of aspects such as fuel and water consumption, with the intention of pin-pointing any inefficiency. They have replaced some fossil fuel heating with alternative energy sources such as a biomass boiler in the giraffe house and the air-source heating in the lorikeet exhibit. The Park has solar panels on their Indian rhino house and also hopes to invest in more in the future.
balancing your safari’ initiative. They do this by having a money collector for the World Land Trust (WLT) in their walk through area, complete with signage informing guests on what they can do to help. Funds raised from this are donated to the WLT and will contribute towards offsetting the CO2 emissions associated with guest vehicles. Less than 2p per car can balance the CO2 produced by the four-mile drive around the safari. www.wmsp.co.uk

The finalists will now be invited to an exclusive awards ceremony on Tuesday 29 October at the Chateau Impney, Droitwich. Visit Worcestershire is thrilled to share that Hursty is this year’s compère who will host the ceremony and announce the 2019 winners and runners up. Attendees will also be able to take part in a raffle to raise funds for this year’s charity partner, Cash for Kids. Commenting on the awards, and why local companies should enter, Hursty said: "Why do people in tourism deserve recognition for their hard work? They have to deal with awkward customers, fake trip advisor reviews and the great British weather. “Anyone who continues to do what they do with a smile on their face and a can-do attitude deserves a knighthood... and these awards come a close second to that. Good luck everyone!" Good luck to all the finalists and we look forward to seeing you in October!

“So far, I have attended four of the seminars from the Chamber’s Leadership Development Series. Each of the seminars has been interesting, varied, well presented and well attended. The various speakers understand that they are dealing with people from a variety of different industries, and those that are managing teams of differing sizes – from the small to the large, still they manage to fill the sessions with useful advice for all. There’s a reasonable amount of group work; it was useful and interesting to see how people from all backgrounds and industries initially saw very similar issues with their own management style. It’s also great to see the cohort progress with those issues as a result of what we’d learned in the sessions. The 2-2 1/2 hour sessions give just the right amount of time out of the office to really dive into a topic, without losing focus or feeling like there’s a mountain of work to catch-up on when you return. All things considered, I would happily recommend the course to anyone who wanted to improve their leadership skills.”
“The Leadership Series has been a great opportunity to refresh my knowledge, collaborate with peers and gain new initiatives to introduce into the business. As NMiTE is a start-up, the areas we have covered in the Leadership Development Series will underpin the culture we would like to develop.

“I did initially wonder if I really needed this training, and if my time would be better spent elsewhere. However from the onset, I was very pleasantly surprised and within the first hour we had participated in a fun exercise which involved interacting with everyone on our table and getting to know them all. “With the initial barriers broken down, the speaker - Sean Foley “The Emotional Intelligent leader” - began and what an interesting, knowledgeable and thought-provoking speaker he was! “I found myself questioning my own
methods of management, how I could improve them and how to better utilise those recommended by the speaker. The whole presentation was enjoyable and educational, leaving me wanting more. “On my return to the office, I found myself implementing some of the techniques learnt and used my new skills to think how to maximise individual and team performance. Even though I was unknowingly using emotional intelligence as a business leader before, understanding this subject more has helped me hone these skills, helping me

to understand and manage the emotions of others, hopefully inspiring my team, and ultimately becoming a better leader. “After setting up my company and putting my life and sole into it, you tend to focus on your employees and their development, rarely thinking of yourself. Attending the Leadership Development Series, has made me realise that if I want to develop with my team and continue to inspire, motivate and lead, I need to continue to develop myself.” Reece James Director at RockPower Connections

THE RIGHT PREPARATION TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS INTERNATIONALLY
Expanding internationally provides a great opportunity for business growth. The International Trade department’s range of import and export courses for new and novice exporters (and even more experienced exporters) gives companies a fantastic opportunity to find out what it means to trade across the globe and what they will be required to do to make a success of it. For those who are unsure about whether they should export or not, the insight provided by these courses will provide the requisite information to make that decision.
046
Should you decide that exporting is the direction you wish to take to grow your business, a major decision is WHERE. Which international market is going to give you best export sales returns? Effective market research is vital in ensuring that you pick the right potential market for your business. Without going through a considered market selection process, it could prove to be a very costly exercise both in terms of time and resources.
before you contemplate market entry. Once you have identified a market, route to market considerations such as using an agent or distributor, negotiating the deal and contracts all come to the forefront of the international planning process. Our two courses “How to Build Overseas Sales” and “How to Select and Manage Overseas Distribution Channels” encompass all of the above considerations and more.
At this point in your globalisation journey, H&W Chamber can support you by offering training on how to carry out effective market selection for your products or services. The first step for your business is to look at your products and identify strengths, weaknesses and points of difference in your offering. Why should customers overseas buy from you?
Once you have chosen your market and made the sale, the next stage is to physically get your goods to the international customer. Once again, the team at H&W Chamber can assist you with these aspects of international trade; export documentation services, bespoke international trade advice, letters of credit and other payment tools for export sales, tariff classification and Incoterms. Support and training is ongoing and continually updated to reflect current international trade market conditions.
Follow this up with effective desk research to identify opportunities, look at competitors and local market trends

WHAT DO WE WANT FROM WHERE WE WORK? But the employers who have taken part in our future workspace survey all endorse working from home and most try to make it easy for their staff to do so. How do you feel about it? Are you wholeheartedly for or against, or do you lean more towards the respondent who said that home working would be fine for selected staff but not as a blanket policy?
The corner office with windows on the top floor was once the pinnacle of what employees wanted from their workspace; even pool tables and breakout spaces are no longer the preserve of the London ad agencies. But what do your employees want from their working environment? PARKING – WHO’S IN THE DRIVING SEAT? WORKING FROM HOME – DISTRACTION OR SPACE FOR QUITE FOCUS? Early responses from our own research into this have yielded some interesting results – for instance, while most respondents want to work from home some of the time, most feel that their employer wouldn’t support that or that they would get a negative reaction if they made that request.
048
Parking is still a major issue for employees – many drive to work because of other commitments, such as the school run, and they really appreciate parking somewhere close to the office. This can be an issue for employers, of course – with the cost of leasing or buying property their main consideration, that cost can rise when parking is factored in. So the property landscape is changing – not only economic but also entrepreneurial and policy factors are making an impact.
September/October 2019
ADVERTORIALFEATURE
These are influencing not only the way we work – at home, in co-working spaces, or in the office – but the design of offices and the buildings we now use as offices.
DESIGN FOR WORKING Former industrial buildings are now at the cutting edge of office design; keeping the marks of that industrial heritage – brick walls, ironwork, soaring windows – is very on-trend, as is the innovative and flexible use of space. You may not have a pool table at work, but you probably have open plan spaces, casual meeting spaces, and an area where staff can eat their lunch at the very least. Bringing employees together, encouraging people to mix with each other away from their desks and outside their normal teams or departments, does help to foster working relationships, and is welcomed. Co-working spaces are also springing up around our towns and cities, providing a focus for those who might otherwise feel isolated working at home.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION As office design changes, so too do locations – with changes to the planning rules in the offing and the traditional High Street suffering because of increased online
traffic, retail spaces could soon follow industrial buildings and become offices, creating a new commercial mix in town and city centres. There will still be restrictions on which shops or commercial premises can be converted into houses, but brownfield sites in central locations are becoming increasingly attractive. Some fundamentals are constant – landlords still want leases, tenants still want

security, developers still want land and planning permission, local authorities still want to be in control – we advise on all of these, and help plans to become reality. GROWTH FORUM SERIES IN ASSOCIATION WITH EBC GROUP
HOW THE DEPARTMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE HELPED TO GROW ONE BUSINESSMAN’S IDEA Darren Mather was set to enjoy a rare snow day with his two daughters when he realised they didn’t own a sledge, and all the local stores had sold out. Faced with disappointing his children, he decided to have a go at making something he could use to pull them to the slope and planned to borrow sledges once there. Using two spare pieces of laminate flooring and some discarded wood, Darren pieced together a makeshift sledge equipped with two-foot grips and a front rope. It was an immediate hit, and not just among his own children. Before long there were queues of people waiting for their turn on Darren’s invention. After several prototypes, Darren launched his final product into the domestic market in 2013. However, it soon became clear that the rarity of snow in the UK was going to be a major barrier to further growth. If Axiski was going to flourish as a business, then it needed to export to snowier climates. The opportunity to start exporting found its way to Axiski incidentally. Darren was contacted by retailers in France, Germany and Austria interested in trialling orders of his product. It was an opening that couldn’t be passed up, but there were many stumbling blocks around costing, transport and practical considerations. Realising this led Darren to seek out the guidance and support of the DIT. He started his journey with International Trade Advisor (ITA) Nick Corley and together they began to consider a targeted strategy. Through Nick, Darren was able to access free information from a raft of entities and Chambers of Commerce throughout Europe.
Finally, he was able to gain some traction and find a calculated route to market. Since then, Darren’s business has taken off all over Europe. Countries he now exports to include Russia, Iceland, Austria, Germany, France, Finland, and Norway amongst others. Excitingly, he’s recently added America to his sprawling list of markets. Although working part-time alongside Axiski prevented him from physically attending trade shows, he was able to use Nick’s pool of contacts to arrange for his sledges to be displayed at the NY Now trade fair in the US. The display caught the eye of the CEO of The Grommet and led to an export deal currently bringing in £400,000. It’s not been an easy journey and there have been plenty of stumbles along the way, but Darren was able to use the DIT to support him through the difficulties. Above all, he tells us, working with Nick and the DIT has given him confidence, knowing that he can pick up the phone anytime and ask for advice. Armed with their support and his own thorough research, his business has gone from strength to strength and is only set for more growth in the future.

REACTIVE VS PROACTIVE: HOW ARE YOU HELPING YOUR CUSTOMER? If you ask me, there are two distinct ways you can be of service to your customers: provide customer support and work to achieve customer success. You certainly need both that’s for sure. And a lot of businesses are doing a pretty good job at customer support, but what about their customer success? From my experience a lot of companies don’t focus on this crucial area and often don’t understand the term and certainly not the difference! It’s really easy to see Customer Support and Customer Success as separate parts of your process, nothing could be further from the truth. Let’s start by defining what we mean by these terms.
SUPPORT IS REACTIVE; SUCCESS IS PROACTIVE Customer Support. This is the reactive response to a request and generally has a start and end point. For example, they ask a question about the best way to use your product. You answer their specific question, maybe providing a few extra examples or tips. And then the interaction is done. You both go your separate ways. Customer Success. This is far more proactive and involves reaching out to build relationships. The process often does not have a specific end point, what you are more likely to have is a milestone along the way. Going back to the example of a customer asking about product use. Instead of ending your interaction with a few tips, you recognise that this is only the first milestone achieved. You will plan on getting in touch in a few weeks or months to see how they got on, maybe send through information on more advanced techniques down the line. In another few months, you’ll probably get back in touch with a new product or use case to make sure they are getting the best value from your business. You will use these touchpoints and milestones to build the relationship.
A MINOR DIFFERENCE They both have similar goals in helping the customer with their interactions with your company, product, or service. The big difference is that Customer Success focuses on the long-term relationship building.
052
You still might ‘solve a problem’ (i.e. provide support) as part of your success strategy but you’re playing the long game and this solution is just a milestone to the greater achievement of genuine customer satisfaction. Don’t get me wrong, both are crucial and I think Customer Success relies on a good foundation of Customer Support. But what companies need to recognise is that they need to bring the two even more in line, working closer together than ever before. We live in a world where Customer Satisfaction and Experience is overtaking price and functionality as a key driver to business acquisition and retention. So you can see how keeping your existing customer on board (as well as acquiring new clients who have become dissatisfied with their current provider) is not only necessary for continued growth but makes for a much more powerful differentiator.
MANAGING ENGAGEMENT What can you do to increase customer success without being overbearing or an irritation to your customers? In my opinion there are two questions: where do you put your focus? And what practical things need to be in place to achieve this? The key take away is that you need to focus on your customers’ wants and needs, rather than just what’s good for you and your business. As your Customer Success strategy develops, your customers’ wants and needs will go hand in hand with your business goals. Additionally, there are two practical things your business needs to offer world class customer success regardless of the size of your business: (1) up to date and accurate data and (2) the technology to allow the outreach in the most appropriate way.
Put simply, having the data to allow you to segment your audience and make any communication meaningful and appropriate is super important. Similarly, having the technology to allow you to segment this data and then reach out with an appropriate message makes the whole process worthwhile for both parties.
WHAT WE DO Looking at my own business, we have found that there are two key elements that really make up the foundation of what our customers are looking for in their relationship with us. First, if we get the onboarding right. If people learn how to use the system, feel confident with it early on, the conversations down the road become much more productive. This is because they are focusing on what the system can do for them, rather than how they can use it. The second thing we must get right is to offer a high level of accessibility to the team here in the office. That doesn’t just mean support, but also for consultative advice. They want us to react in a quick and reasonable way. These two elements always keep our customer engaged and help illustrate that we care about how they are using the system. To talk to a member of the OpenCRM team about how CRM software can benefit your business, call 01748 473000 or visit us at www.opencrm.co.uk Graham Anderson, is the CEO and founder of OpenCRM, one of the UK’s leading customer relationship management systems.

DRAGONFLIES DECORATE THE CITY OF WORCESTER Over August, St Richard’s Hospice planted over a thousand hand-crafted dragonflies on the lawns around the base of St Andrew’s Spire in the city this August. The unique dragonfly display follows the success of the charity’s previous Celebration Garden of forget-me-nots and snowdrops. Visitors were encouraged to celebrate someone or something special with one of the beautiful dragonflies in the display, which they can later take home as a keepsake or a gift. The dragonflies are individually made by The British Iron Work
Centre in Oswestry, uniquely commissioned for St Richard’s Hospice. Event Organiser Jayne Sargeant said: “The dragonflies created a memorable and stunning garden which was an ideal focal point for celebration and reflection. The forget-me-nots and snowdrops in our previous two Celebration Gardens were incredibly popular and ended up in homes and gardens in Worcestershire and around the world. “St Richard’s runs a Dragonfly Group to help bereaved children and young people, together with their parent or carer
through professional support and offers an opportunity to share their experiences with others in a similar situation.” www.strichards.org.uk

Acting on behalf of a private investor, Charlie Green, commercial negotiator at GJS Dillon, sold BW House, Metal & Ores Industrial Estate, Hanbury Road, Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove, B60 4JZ. THE 5G REVOLUTION: WHY 5G IS MORE THAN JUST MOBILE ‘5G internet’ is a hot topic right now, with companies talking about how it will revolutionise mobile data, with speeds of up to 1Gbps delivered directly to your mobile phone. It’s easy to get excited about this, until you realise that streaming data at 1Gbps would eat up an entire 10GB monthly data contract in 80 seconds, or that streaming Netflix in full 4K UHD requires just 25Mbps, leaving 97.5% of your 1Gbps connection unused. However, 5G is about so much more than faster download speeds, and the UK is on the brink of a technological revolution – with Worcestershire among the leaders in the 5G roll-out. Most people will be familiar with the term ‘4G’ – it refers to the current generation of mobile network technology that is in currently in place. Although it theoretically offers download speeds of up to 300Mbps, current 4G networks typically provide a maximum speed of around 20Mpbs in most situations. Even then, during peak hours or in busy areas, 4G connections can slow to a halt, frequently dropping to borderline unusable speeds. 5G changes this. Looking at the expanded capacity and increased speeds of 5G, it’s clear to see how this will benefit people while on public transport or working away from the office, but to see how 5G will really shape the future, we need to look beyond mobile, and into homes and workplaces across the country, where the revolution of a superfast, wireless internet connection will take place. 058
While 4G can achieve decent speeds for both home and work use, its limited capacity means that it has never truly been able to compete with fixed line broadband. Currently, to achieve superfast broadband speeds, the only real solution for most people is a fibre-optic or cable connection from your local telecom provider – that’s if it’s even available at all. Along with the considerable expense of installing and maintaining such networks up and down the UK, there are still large patches of the UK where superfast broadband is just a pipe-dream. Home and business users are required to take out costly line rental contracts, regardless of whether they actually need a landline phone, and even the strongest phoneline is only ever a storm away from being blown down. 5G turns this on its head. For the first time ever, fixed wireless access (FWA) will be a genuine competitor to the status quo of fixed line broadband. Rather than rely on connecting your router to a landline, superfast broadband will be delivered directly to your router over 5G, which in turn will be broadcast securely to every Wi-Fi device in your home. The rapid growth of TV, gaming and music streaming services, along with ever-increasing demand for smart technology in the home/workplace, will mean that fast, stable and affordable superfast broadband access will soon become a necessity, rather than a luxury. Current estimates are that 5G will be able to consistently deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps to FWA networks across the UK - by comparison, average speed of a UK fixed-line broadband connection is around just 50Mbps. Combining the expanded
Ray Gillespie, Director at Worcester Web Studio
coverage, lower roll-out cost and improved performance of 5G FWA, we could be looking at the biggest technological leap since mobile internet was first introduced. While widespread 5G use is still a few years off, the first 5G handsets are already on the market, and several major manufacturers are planning to debut their 5G handsets in early 2020. What’s more, Worcestershire is at the forefront of the 5G roll-out in the UK, and has been selected as one of only six 5G Testbeds across the country, after a successful bid by the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership.
