WELCOME TO THE SPRING EDITION OF BUSINESS DIRECTION During the last couple of weeks I have been in a number of meetings and witnessed on the television some suggestion that manufacturing and engineering in Britain is dead. HOW WRONG THEY ARE! The UK remains the sixth largest manufacturer in terms of output in the world. In this edition, we will be celebrating this fact and looking at manufacturers in the two counties.

business community is that this Chamber, as part of the West Midlands Chamber of Commerce LLP, will continue to deliver the UKTI contract for Herefordshire and Worcestershire for the next three years. Year on year, up to 100 companies export for the first time through this service and many more export to new markets with assistance from the UKTI team based at the Chamber.

Spring is a particularly busy period for Chambers and its members. We have a few major events coming up including Herefordshire Business Expo on Wednesday 21 March, Green Business Showcase in partnership with Herefordshire Greenlinks featuring Vince Cable on Monday 2April and a big celebratory event, Manufactured in the Midlands on Thursday 3 May at Chateaux Impney, Driotwich. More details on these events and all our regular opportunities are included in this edition.

Spring and summer is also an important period for one of our big industries Leisure and Tourism and as a Chamber of Commerce we are working very closely with local businesses, attractions and accommodation to encourage people to visit Worcestershire, stay in Worcestershire, and make the most of its many wonderful attractions. You can find out about all of these at Destination Worcestershire’s new website www.visitworcestershire.org

Vince Cable, the current Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills is also featured in this edition and he talks about how the Government is supporting Green businesses. The British Chambers of Commerce have just launched a new campaign ‘Business is Good for Britain’ which we are very much supporting and you will be hearing more about it during the next year. We are eager for local businesses to also get involved and send their 50 words submissions See page 4 for more information.

Finally, I hope to see many of you at some of our events during the spring and share with you the many success stories in our two counties. mikea@hwchamber.co.uk

mAlvERN SPRAYTEC IN ZERO GRAvITY TESTING OF NEw FIRE EXTINGuISHER FOR SPACE STATION

NinetyFive Creative has launched a new campaign to encourage Chamber members to Think Big.

Colorado-based ADA Technologies recently confirmed that NASA’s new space-bound fire extinguisher and the malvern Instruments Spraytec particle size analyzer both function just as well in zero gravity as they do on Earth. Researchers carried out droplet size experiments on the infamous ‘vomit comet’ Zero Gravity Corporation aircraft. They showed that water atomization is independent of gravity and that a Fine Water Mist portable fire extinguisher currently under development for use on the International Space Station will safely and cleanly extinguish fires in space. Project Leader, ADA’s Thierry Carriere said:”There was no previous evidence to demonstrate that an extinguisher of this type would perform to expectations in the zero gravity environment of the international space station. Thanks to NASA’s Flight Opportunities program, which provides access to the Reduced-Gravity Parabolic Flights, we were able to demonstrate that it could.” Malvern’s Spraytec is specifically designed to address the unique requirements of spray particle and droplet characterization across a wide range of industries and applications.

NINETYFIVE CREATIVE ENCOURAGES CHAMBER MEMBERS TO THINK BIG IN 2012 As part of the campaign, the Worcester based marketing agency is planning to work with local businesses to generate big marketing ideas that will help them to achieve business growth in 2012.

KEITH MOWBRAY OBE, DYTECNA Keith Mowbray, Executive Vice President for Business Development at Malvern defence firm Dytecna Ltd. recently received a OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list for his services to the defence industry.

NinetyFive Creative’s Managing Director, Matt Lloyd explained the thinking behind the campaign: “2012 is set to be a huge year with the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, so we didn’t want it to pass by without participating in some way. We’re hoping to make some big achievements this year and we’re not alone, so we decided to develop a way that we could work with other local companies.” As part of the campaign, the creative agency is offering Chamber members the opportunity to take advantage of a free Think Big Session. The two hour session includes a review of current marketing materials and activities, before working through a range of workshops that will help you to generate marketing initiatives to achieve your 2012 business objectives. THOmAS vAlE CONSTRuCTION lANDS mAJOR CONTRACT IN ITS HOmE TOwN OF STOuRPORT ON SEvERN The construction company whose turnover now stands at a staggering £251 million was formed in 1869 when Thomas Vale, a young engineer, designed and built the cast iron bridge that still spans the River Severn at Stourport on Severn today.

Architects impression of Marina Quay

The contract is to deliver a £25million development scheme which will be known as Marina Quay. The land, owned by Clive Fletcher Developments and British Waterways will become a hive of activity later this year when the current marina will be transformed into a tourist hot spot. The new development will have the capacity to moor 410 boats with ancillary and leisure facilities as well as 102 holiday apartments to attract tourism and investment. The Contractor is one of the most awarded Construction Companies to date in the UK. www.thomasvale.com

WRAGGE & CO URGES EMPLOYERS TO PLAN AHEAD FOR WORKPLACE PENSION REFORM wragge & Co’s Combined HR Solutions team urges employers to plan ahead for landmark reforms to workplace pensions, introduced from October this year.

There are no net job losses as a result of the decision. The station has supported many local charity and community causes over the years and this commitment will continue under its new name.

Partner Richard Lee said: “Time is running out for organisations to establish how the reforms will affect them and to develop an implementation strategy. There are lots of issues for employers to consider, including how to pay for mandatory contributions and how to monitor their workforces to ensure compliance with the new rules.”

www.wragge.com

As part of a major strategy to grow the listenership of Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s oldest commercial radio station, Wyvern will be changing its name to Free Radio –Herefordshire and Worcestershire in April. The announcement was made by Orion Media which acquired the station in 2009. The change of name will not impact on the output of the station with the majority of peak time programming on 96.7 and 102.8FM continuing. Orion’s strong commitment to provide listeners with local news, sport, traffic and weather information from its studios in Worcester will also be unaffected. The station will have a continued commitment to original and locally based journalism ensuring it provides a locally focused news service on air relevant to its audiences.

For the first time, all employers – regardless of their size or type of business – will have to automatically enrol certain workers into a pension scheme that meets quality criteria and pay minimum levels of contributions into the scheme. Failure to comply will result in fines and, potentially, criminal sanctions.

Visit Wragge & Co’s workplace pension reform website, www.wragge.com/wpr for guidance and the latest news.

ADvANCED TECHNOlOGY AND mANuFACTuRING – REASONS TO BE CHEERFul Certainty in the energy efficiency market has been lacking.

vENTuTEC IPHONE APP KNOCKS ANGRY BIRDS OFF THEIR PERCH. Ventutec Ltd, a local Worcester app development agency succeeded in overtaking long running iPhone game Angry Birds from the top of the Apple download charts

Just consider Solar PV and the criticism of the Green Deal, the Government’s flagship policy to generate jobs and technology. But it’s not all bad news. Proposed changes to the Building Regulations would require additional energy efficiency improvements to be carried out and may provide the impetus to drive the retro-fit energy efficiency market forward.

Celebalike, a celebrity lookalike iPhone app, attracted huge media attention when Ventutec revealed stats showing that the most matched celebrity male was Steven Gerrard, whilst the most popular female was Lorraine Kelly. The app featured across national news and was showcased live on popular TV shows including, ‘That Sunday Night Show’ with Adrian Chiles, Channel 4’s ‘Come Dine With Me and ITV’s ‘Lorraine’.

2012 will see the beginning of a significant injection of funding for renewable projects. The Green Investment Bank (“GIB”) will fund projects aimed at domestic and commercial energy consumers who will benefit from the installation of energy saving technology with no upfront cost. Repayments would be made over time from resultant energy savings. Initially capitalised with £3billion over the period to 2015, the GIB will start making investments in April 2012.

Ventutec themselves are very proud to have overtaken the pesky pigs at Angry birds, who have clung onto a top position for so long. Celebalike reached number one in the Entertainment app chart and number two in overall paid for apps. www.ventutec.com

Products and businesses must be accredited to take advantage of such schemes. Further government support to this market is welcome and companies will need to review the opportunities this will provide for them. www.harrison-clark.co.uk

TACKLING ABSENTEEISM IN THE WORKPLACE Absenteeism can have a hugely detrimental effect on businesses, with substantial amounts of money lost in non-working days and decreased productivity in both the private and public sectors. Absence management is therefore an important part of the creation of a happy and healthy workforce and ultimately a profitable business. Employers should not ignore this ever increasing issue, particularly in the current economic climate when pressures on businesses have never been greater.

One method of positively addressing the issue of absenteeism in the workplace can be achieved through providing an appropriate and effective Employee Benefits programme, helping improve staff morale, boost motivation and ultimately increase performance. After all, a healthier workforce is a happier one!

Well respected as a global provider of specialist water and sanitation equipment, Evesham-based Evenproducts was co-opted by a major aid organisation to get emergency humanitarian aid equipment to the Philippines on Christmas Eve. Westlands Toyota WESTLANDS TOYOTA The Westlands Motor Group is a family owned business that operates 4 Toyota Centres in Hereford, Worcester, Bromsgrove and Stourbridge. The business has been in existence for over 25 years and has developed an outstanding reputation for complete customer satisfaction over this period of time. Nick Wilczynski, owner and Chairman is proud of the role the business plays in the local community. “Over the years we have worked hard to build strong relationships with local business and individuals in both Stourbridge, where the business originated and in Bromsgrove where we took over the franchise almost 10 years ago”. “We believe that we need to fully understand the requirements of all of our customers and prospects so that we can deliver and even exceed their expectations not only when acquiring their vehicle but also in it’s after care”. Westlandsexpanded further with Toyota a couple of years ago, taking on the franchise in both Hereford and Worcester. Nick believes that these are exciting times for the Group and Toyota with a raft of new fuel and tax efficient models being brought to market this year. So confident is Nick that in the past eighteen months he has appointed Mark Roden as Managing Director to oversee the next phase of evolution for the Group. Mark has joined the Group from Toyota GB where he held a number of Senior positions, most recently heading up Fleet operations for the UK. Mark observed “Having spent 15 years with Toyota, I am fully aware of the primary importance placed on exceeding customer expectations on every occasion we are in contact with them. I was therefore delighted to join the Westlands Group who I know live and breathe this philosophy. With my background in Fleet, I am very aware of the strong offering Toyota currently has that makes perfect sense for both business and Company Car drivers. This proposition combined with our philosophy of always putting customers first, puts us in an ideal position to satisfy all motoring requirements”.

STUART CAMERON OFFERING A SOLUTION TO ALL YOUR COMPANY MOTORING REQUIREMENTS Hi…My name is Stuart Cameron and I am the Business Centre Manager for Westlands Motor Group. We operate the Toyota franchise in Hereford and Worcester and having recently joined the local Chamber of Commerce, I thought this would be a great opportunity to introduce myself and give you an insight into what we at Westlands Toyota can provide in relation to your company motoring requirements. I joined Westlands in 2007 and have considerable Motor Retail experience over a 10 year period. I am from a financial services background that allows me to fully understand the accounting and taxation implications on both business and drivers when acquiring company vehicles. There is no doubt regulations surrounding company vehicles is particularly complex and it is vital that you identify the most efficient way of providing company vehicles, whether they be for yourself or your employees. I would therefore be delighted to meet with you to discuss the best way for you to: • Fund the acquisition of your vehicles • Best plan for the legal, taxation and accounting implications for your company • Understand the taxation implications for your employees • Be aware of the range of vehicles provided by Toyota - from the most aspirational sports cars, through to the most tax and fuel efficient passenger cars and to the award winning Hilux Light Commercial Vehicle We at Westlands enjoy a particularly close relationship with Toyota GB and our privileged position allows us to structure fleet solutions that meet virtually all company or driver requirements, whatever the size of the company or fleet. We pride ourselves on providing exceptional levels of customer service and I am given the opportunity to establish personal relationships with each of my customers which enables me to tailor a specific fleet solution to suit individual circumstances. My financial services experience therefore allows me to offer practical hands on support, advising on the legal requirements and framework of any fleet situation but also taking into account the commercial pressures of a small business. Because I understand the frustrations and difficulties faced within fleet management, my role is to be able to work with companies to focus on the positives and assist in saving money for both the company and driver to move the business forward. Whilst every fleet will have their own varying levels of needs and methods of working, I hope that what I can bring to companies I work with in the Hereford and Worcester area is a level of support to ensure each

customer is aware of the wide spectrum of options available from Westlands Toyota. For further information, please call me on (low call rate) 08430 225990

Toyota Tops the Polls for Fleet Customers Toyota is performing beyond the expectations of Britain’s fleet managers in key areas, according to the 2011 Fleet Operator Attitude Survey from automotive research specialists Sewells. This reveals that “quality and reliability” and “Service, Maintenance and Repair (SMR) costs” are the most important considerations for fleet customers when choosing vehicles. The study shows that these are areas where Toyota excels, achieving the highest rating among ‘mainstream’ manufacturers for SMR costs and also receiving high praise for the quality and reliability of its vehicles. With a wave of exciting new models including three new tax efficient hybrids, a new communications programme, an even better After Sales proposition and systems that will deliver easier access and support for customers; Toyota are investing to support their customers in the fleet market. Investment in a new fleet charter (See Below) that started in January 2012 outlines a series of commitments to improve customer relationships, making it easier and simpler to deal with Toyota Fleet services for both sales and after sales. In a busy year for new models, Toyota announce further advances in fuel efficiency, low emissions and zero-emissions electric driving range that will be offered by the next development of Toyota’s hybrid technology, Prius Plug-in Hybrid. This will be launched later this year, together with the new Yaris Hybrid – a new entry point for hybrid technology – and the versatile Prius+ seven-seat MPV. The launch programme for 2012 also includes the new Avensis and the much anticipated Toyota GT 86 sports car

ADVERTORIAL Famed for its ultra-tough quality, Hilux is much more than just a workhorse. Today’s sixth generation of Toyota’s pick-up combines traditional robustness and excellent load-carrying capacity with comfort, safety and equipment features to make it a vehicle that ably bridges the divide between work and everyday driving needs.

“Introducing the right product at the right time and putting the customer first are central to this strategy showing that drivers can save thousands of pounds in tax and lower their running costs, leading to a stronger business performance in 2012 and beyond,” said Stuart Cameron, Business Centre Manager at Westlands Toyota.

neW pRoducTs FRom ToyoTa in 2012 The New Toyota Avensis Engineered for Sweeter Performance and lower Bills 2012 New Avensis delivers improvements in dynamics, comfort and ownership costs. Alan Kidd, Editor of Total 4x4 magazine said, “Hilux has always stood out in what is a very fiercely fought category. It’s incredibly capable in every area and comes at a very appealing price. The updates Toyota has made to it are subtle, but they’re enough to nudge it back in front of the pack. In particular, its interior is much more modern and, without sacrificing anything in the way of refinement, the vehicle is tougher than ever. There’s a lot of talent in the pick-up market, but once again Hilux is the one to beat.” The latest version of Hilux is available in three bodystyles, single, extra and double cab, with a choice of 2.5 or 3.0-litre D-4D turbo diesel engines.

UK ORGANISATION WINS ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD Southco Manufacturing Ltd has won the Industry Category Green Apple Gold Award in recognition of their environmental project – Environment sustainability through recycling improvement. The trophy was presented by The Green Organisation at the 18th annual international awards ceremony at the House of Commons.

APPRENTICES BOOST FOR HEREFORD Sanctuary Group, which is developing an urban village in the centre of Hereford, said it plans to create valuable new work and training opportunities for young people in the area. The Worcester-based housing and care provider will work together with partner organisations to ensure apprenticeship places are created under proposals to build new homes within Hereford city centre.

Sanctuary’s national apprenticeship scheme has gone from strength to strength and we believe it is important to share our experiences with others. The urban village will enable us to extend some exciting employment and training opportunities to young people in Herefordshire. We work with our supply chain to ensure that sustainable apprenticeships are created throughout our development programme.” Sanctuary Group currently has 187 apprentices employed directly and indirectly through its partners. www.sanctuary-group.co.uk

Peter Martin, Sanctuary Group’s director of development, said: “As a social enterprise, we are committed to making a difference to the communities in which we operate and Hereford will be no different.

The ceremony was hosted by The Rt Hon Liz Kendall, MP, and the presentations were made by Chris Hopkins of Ploughcroft Solar; who have revolutionised the domestic solar power industry and gained recognition on Dragons Den this year. The judges commented: “By being energy and waste-smart, Southco have increased recycling and efficiency at the same time as increasing production. Smart investment and smarter practices are helping them on the way to zero % landfill.” After their success in these awards, they are in the running to be entered into the Brussels led European Business Awards for the Environment. The Green Apple Awards is one of the few accredited feeder schemes into the European awards. www.southco.com

AN EYE TO THE FUTURE Every successful business has a well structured strategic marketing plan with long-term goals to ensure a future sales stream. In today’s marketplace, as part of the marketing make-up, the internet is a primary sales and marketing channel in its own right. To achieve success on-line, a website ideally should be positioned on page one of all search engines. In your own experience, how often do you visit page two or three after performing a search? BLINK AND YOU MIGHT MISS IT We all miss business opportunities that should have been gained if promotional activity had placed our offering in front of potential customers at the point when they were looking – this is exactly what Google and other search engines provide – a valued response to a search request. To do this, search engines analyse and rank every website in the world, placing the most relevant to the search term on page one. Being ranked highly by search engines, such as Google, is no accident. Years of research and software development has enabled website designers, such as Areca Design, to develop very sophisticated Business Direction published by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce

and innovative self-marketing platforms, which are loved by all the search engines. When this powerful online technology is combined with experienced brand development skills, award winning creative graphic designers and strategic sales and marketing development managers, the overall package will bring great results in a controlled and cost-effective plan. A VISION FOR FUTURE MARKETING SUCCESS The benefit of an external marketing service, such as the strategic help provided by Areca Design, is an opportunity for an experienced observational eye to take a view of your promotional activities and brand positioning – allowing you to concentrate on the challenges of running your business. Areca Design will help you develop a twelvemonth marketing and brand promotion plan, enabling you to budget and allocate resources for key promotional opportunities throughout the year. This could include social media campaigns, regular e-newsletters, internet marketing, traditional advertising or attending exhibitions and events. REDDITCH BASED SOFTwARE COmPANY EXPANDS OvERSEAS Following support from the UKTI’s Passport To Export scheme Keynetix Ltd, a Redditch based software development company, have recently appointed Solution Research Centre in Hong Kong and Enzdata in New Zealand to sell and support their HoleBASE, KeyHOLE, KeyLAB and KeyAGS software products. Keynetix’s software products have a strong following amongst UK geotechnical companies and the increase in overseas work that these companies have seen prompted Keynetix to start investigating international representation at the start of 2011. Initially Keynetix Ltd signed up for the UKTI Passport to Export scheme, working with Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce. Keynetix Ltd Managing Director, Dr Roger Chandler: “The Passport to Export scheme offered us tremendous assistance in learning how and where to start our export process.

We attended public courses run by the scheme and received very valuable one to one sessions with overseas marketing and communication experts.” Once Keynetix Ltd had targeted specific regions they received assistance via Export Marketing Reseach Scheme (EMRS) funding to visit Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong to enable them to research the regions and locate and interview potential agents. “New orders for our software from all four new territories significantly contributed to the growth of new software sales in 2011.” said Keynetix Ltd Business Development Manager, Fionn Wardrop “We look forward to the effect multiplying in 2012 with the appointment of these agents and further work with UKTI to investigate new territories.” www.keynetix.com

Worcester City Council BOOSTER GRANTS

therapists Kathy Scott and Mel Harris who were looking for ways to attract new clients.

Worcester City Council is offering young growing businesses the chance to grab a welcome financial boost to help them make the next step in their development.

They were encouraged by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce to apply for the grant because they wanted to include a professionally produced video clip on their website to demonstrate their work.

It is running the second phase of the Business Booster Grants scheme, which is part funded by Worcestershire County Council.

“The business is growing steadily and Leaff is now that little bit greener too. I am so grateful for the help and support that I have received.” Bearsgreatescapes – a company making tricycles and selling Bennetts ice creams from its cycles – also benefitted from a grant. Stephen Connelly runs the business and said the grant had helped them finish their new frame, which would go on sale worldwide.

Kathy Scott said: “We go into local companies and offer massages to staff, usually lasting 15 to 20 minutes, to help refresh them and boost morale.

The initiative now offers city-based companies up to £2,000, which must be matched from the business’s own funds.

“The best way to explain what we do is to demonstrate it and we have received a lot of positive feedback from local businesses about our video. It has opened up opportunities for us.”

The original scheme, which ran from November 2010 to November 2011, supported 16 city firms from a wide range of industries including interior design, marketing, gardening, a driving school, health and wellbeing, graphic design and sales.

Another firm to benefit from a Business Booster Grant was Leaff Design Ltd run by Kaitie Benstead – a graphic designer specialising in branding, corporate design and commissioned wedding stationery.

One of those businesses – Hands On At Work – provides an on-site massage service for workers at local companies. It is run by qualified and experienced massage

Kaitie realised her IT system was slowing her down and received a booster grant

“I’m really grateful for the support the city council and all my customers have given me over the past year,” he said. The firm only uses Worcestershire companies to supply parts for its tricycles. to help buy new hardware, enabling automatic back-up of designs and allowing clients to upload their material remotely. There are also far fewer printouts needed now. Kaitie said: “Receiving support from the council has helped massively to increase the volume of work that Leaff can take on.

To qualify for a grant, the business must be based in Worcester, be between one and five years old and in need of help with development. Grants are limited to one per business and are subject to availability of funding. www.worcester.gov.uk/business

Manufacturing

mAS BOOST FOR HEREFORDSHIRE AND wORCESTERSHIRE mANuFACTuRERS An enhanced national programme that will help small and medium manufacturers in Herefordshire and worcestershire was officially launched in January. The Manufacturing Advisory Service, which has been operating in the County since 2002, is promising to provide companies with a range of tailored support to boost sales, encourage growth, embrace innovation and improve supply chain development.

Simon Griffiths, MAS Area Director

Simon Griffiths, MAS Area Director North and West, said: “The Manufacturing Advisory Service has been delivering specialist support in Herefordshire and Worcestershire for more than 8 years and the new look programme will continue to build on the relationships already in place. As we move into this next era we encourage business leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs in the manufacturing sector to contact a local adviser to find out more about how we can deliver real benefits for your business.

The new offer will see specialist advisers - working on the ground - with a specific focus on advancing manufacturing capabilities and creating high value jobs.

We’ve launched a new website www.mymas.org that will provide the latest information and we are looking to work with partners to host events in the County to give companies the opportunity to ask questions about future support.”

Herefordshire and Worcestershire manufacturers will be able to tap into a wide range of assistance, including a direct phone hotline (0845 658 9600) manufacturing reviews and networking events tackling key industry issues.

MAS is keen to link companies directly with the Apprenticeship programme that will drive a minimum of 1250 apprentices each year, not to mention an even greater focus on advanced supply chain development for both SMEs and larger manufacturers.

They will also be able to access grants for strategic change projects in their business.

THE FuTuRE IS lEAN As the UK’s debt is over £1 trillion and the economy begins to show signs of slippage from recovery, albeit against a backdrop of caution, cost cutting and austerity, it is important that organisations double their activities to ensure the most competitive offering and manoeuvre themselves into a position to maximize advantage in it’s resources from any ensuing upturn in trade. This is particularly important for lean activities, where flexibility to respond to dynamic demand scenarios, lead times, inventory levels and up-skilling of employees are crucial to meet the rapidly changing business environment. Enlightened companies have recognised the Lean Enterprise as a strategic differentiator rather than merely representing ‘a bolt on process’. In addition, an organisation’s lean activity is inextricably linked to margin improvement, releasing capacity for expansion or increased value-added customer service.

Recognising the premium placed on formalised off-the job training, Lean Transition Solutions Ltd have invested and developed an e-learning platform that allows organisations to access lean training and to engage with the academy as shown in Fig 2. This ensures transparency of the tangible benefits and ROI of training spend, previously difficult to calculate or reconcile. Big Interview

Supporting the business world’s green revolution As Business Secretary, Vince Cable is committed to helping UK companies grow. However, he also has a strong belief that such growth cannot be at the expense of the environment. Mr Cable, who believes that the responsibility to ensure sustainable growth lies not just with Government but also with business, said: “People may know me better for my work – and opinions – on banking and the financial crisis. But for much of my working life I have, as an economist, been working on the interconnected issues of economic development, energy and national resources. “Long before I became Shell’s Chief Economist, in the mid-1980s, I helped to write the Brundtland – UN – Report, Our Common Future, which first described the concept of “sustainable development”, advocating growth but green growth. And the following year I helped to produce what I think was the first report to a summit of Prime Ministers on global warming and sea level rise. “There are respects in which we would like to see industry take the initiative: developing smarter purchasing strategies and closing the loop with suppliers, for example by returning scrap material to help mitigate the resource risks to UK business. “The best way for industry to mitigate the risks to resource supplies through the recycling, recovery, and substitution is often to start from the design stage. “Let us take rare earth metals as one example. Not many people appreciate how vital they are to modern devices like mobile phones. However, although they are used in small quantities, their location in each component is known, and their recovery can be significantly eased by designing this process in at the beginning. “Sometimes regulation is required. It is one of my department’s many responsibilities to implement the regulations required for the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directive. They have real economic as well as environmental value, helping to support innovation, growth, investment and jobs. Everyone has a role to play - consumers, business end-users, manufacturers of products, recyclers, local authorities and waste management companies. “Government also has a role to play in supporting technological innovation. My department with the Technology Strategy Board is in the process of

022

BD06 original.indd 22

launching a range of technology innovation centres, designed to bridge the gap between university research and full commercialisation. “Innovation and research are classic ‘spillover’ activities, where the social benefits far outweigh the private gains. Therefore the Government has a role in bolstering the activity. “The same combination of benefits comes from improving energy efficiency within domestic homes - one that puts consumers in charge by giving them the right incentives to invest in their homes. As well as dealing with a major cause of carbon emissions, this could create a new commercial opportunity for business. “The Green Deal establishes a framework allowing businesses to offer consumers energy efficiency improvements to their homes at no upfront cost, instead recouping payments through instalments on bills. “The Government is providing £200m funding to encourage early take-up and stimulate the market for these services. The Green Deal is at the heart of the plans we have set out to support the transition to a green economy. “Another area of useful government intervention is in dealing with persistent market failures to provide finance. This is one reason we have created the Green Investment Bank. It will be a critical component in the UK’s transition to a green economy and its overarching objective will be to catalyse private investment, not replace it “The novelty of low carbon technologies and the uncertainty over the long-term future of these nascent markets means many projects would not get off the ground without Government intervention. Vince Cable will be appearing at the Green Biz Showcase on the 2nd April at the Courtyard in Hereford. At the event organised by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce and Herefordshire Greenlinks he will be answering questions from local businesses and learning more about the issues that are affecting Green businesses. To put your question to the Secretary for Business, Innovation and Skills ‘simply post your question on the discussion forum on www.herefordshiregreenlinks.info

Tickets for the event cost £5 and are available through the Courtyard Box Office or at www.courtyard.org.uk

“We intend the bank to have a broad remit, both for commercial investments, and on state-aided terms where we have developed strong evidence that such aid is necessary. “The Bank will operate independently from government, but will agree its strategic priorities with the Government. Subject to approval by the European Commission, these should include offshore wind, commercial and industrial waste, energy from waste generation, non-domestic energy efficiency and support for the Green Deal. “At least 80% of the funds committed by the Bank over the Spending Review period will be invested in these priority sectors, with the remaining funds invested in other green sectors. “However, it is clear that we need to take immediate action to accelerate private sector investment in advance of State Aid approval for the Bank so I have set up a new team of project finance professionals, within my Department, to drive investment in the UK’s green infrastructure from April. “The Government has committed £3bn to this project which we expect to draw in a further £15bn in private investment. The Green Deal and the Green Investment Bank will together help to reduce energy use and promote energy diversity, helping with resource security and reducing emissions but they are part of a much bigger picture. “There will still, for example, be need for a lot more gas in power generation alongside renewables, including nuclear if it can operate safely and without the vast subsidy enjoyed in the past. The emerging gas extraction technology suggests that Britain may have a lot more gas than we currently think but there will still be need for diverse overseas supplies through pipelines and LNG. And, of course gas, though a relatively clean fuel, generates CO2 and the development of carbon capture and storage (CCS) is becoming pressing, therefore. “We need also to make progress in oil’s last big market: transport. I am more optimistic than some that price pressures will lead to more fuel efficient vehicles and moderation of demand. But there is a need too for government to continue to promote low carbon vehicles and the infrastructure for electric vehicles. “That, I think, is the formula for resource security: let markets work and let business pick up market signals but recognise that government also has a key role in supporting innovation and in setting the right price signals to move to a more sustainable low carbon economy.”

winning formulas for manufacturing success It’s an oft-quoted claim that ‘we don’t make anything in the UK’. It’s a claim that is inaccurate in the West Midlands despite the ravages of recent economic downturns.

And that means challenging some of the traditions on which industries such as engineering were based. To illustrate what she means, Prof Mynors points to research work being carried out at the university into ways of producing products and tooling metal from powder, a technology that can reduce lead times and produce geometries that were previously impossible.

Although it true is that many companies have gone to the wall, unable to survive recession, many are still in business with many more emerging.

It is precise and intricate work and Prof Mynors believes it is the kind of thinking that will usher UK manufacturing into a new era.

For Professor Diane Mynors, Head of the Department of Engineering at the University of Wolverhampton’s Telford Campus, the key to their success is a constant sense of innovation.

She said: “The potential for powdered metal is huge and has great commercial applications. It’s an example of the kind of ways that the technologies are changing.

Prof Mynors said: “I do think that the region’s manufacturing sector is vibrant but it is also changing with the application of new technologies at a higher level than ever before.

“A lot of companies see added value in that kind of approach. They sell not just products but the services as well.” One of the major concerns for UK business is the drift of work abroad but Prof Mynors senses that may be changing as well. She said: “Take fasteners as an example. Some of that manufacturing work would have gone to Taiwan then switched to China, but as China develops issues including inflation, so then it moves to Brazil and the other BRIC countries and then towards the emerging African countries. “However, there is a growing sense that it makes more sense to do this work in the UK. If you are shipping products, that is a lot of a company’s cash floating on the ocean. That money is tied up and many companies can see more sense in placing the work here in the first place. And UK manufacturing has the skills and has become very efficient.”

“There is still a need for those traditional skills, we still need people to bend bits of metal, but new technologies are changing the way those skills are applied. “One of the big changes we are seeing is the emergence of advanced computer systems. The technologies are becoming more precise. “For example, take a car in the seventies. The metal panels would have been 1.5mm thick, today it is 0.5m. Yes, there is still a need for people to work with metal but the forming technology and the material properties continue to be developed.”

Prof Mynors said: “It’s no longer about just selling an item assembly or machine. Take lampposts or aero-engines as an example. These are often no longer sold but leased with the owning company providing a service or replacement plan.

“The companies that are successful are the ones who are prepared to invest in innovation. They are the ones who keep inventing.

Although Prof Mynors is confident for the future of manufacturing, she does have concerns that the country’s skills are being lost, something she feels needs to be addressed.

“The companies that have gone are the ones that did not take that approach. Kodak is a classic example. Invent the digital camera then fail to capitalise upon that.”

She said: “We have the skills and the capabilities in the UK but we have to ensure that we retain them.

Diversity is also the key for many companies. She said: “There are some large companies that work just for one sector, say the automotive sector, and are successful but more and more of the smaller firms have a very diverse portfolio. “They can see that their skills transfer across various sectors which has the advantage that, should one sector collapse, they have others on which to rely.” There is also a move towards companies offering specialist services with firms offering clients follow-up expertise.

“We have to make early interventions to make sure that young people see engineering as a career. They have to be taught that there are jobs in fields such as engineering and manufacturing and they are clean high tech jobs. “I think there is a perception problem to overcome. Parents have long memories and they equate engineering with dirty, oily rags. However, that does not have to be the case. That kind of work is still there, of course, but I work with a lot of engineering companies and I do not get my fingernails dirty. “Schools have to impart the correct careers advice if we are to attract young people into engineering jobs.”

I do think that the region’s manufacturing sector is vibrant but it also changing with the application of new technologies at a higher level than ever before. There is still a need for those traditional skills, we still need people to bend bits of metal, but new technologies are changing the way those skills are applied. 024

Corporate Hospitality

FEATURE

REASONS TO BE CHEERFul IN THE wORlD OF CORPORATE HOSPITAlITY

Corporate entertainment can be one of those investments that come under pressure in tight economic times but there is plenty of reason to hope that 2012 could turn out to be a good year for the sector. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June and the London Olympics in late July running into August will both be feel-good events that will offer all kinds of opportunities for businesses, particularly those close to the Capital. At a time when some corporate hospitality sectors are battling an economic downturn, the events could offer a timely boost. According to market researchers MBD, the sector is already holding up well. Last Summer, the company released a major survey into the hospitality market which suggested that its value was expected to increase by 2% during 2011. This was believed to have reflected an increase in demand from businesses in the

UK as they began to feel a little more confident. That figure is in sharp contrast to 2009, when a 5% decline took turnover to a five year low of £933 million. This was attributed to lower levels of spending on corporate hospitality by businesses seeking to minimise costs by cutting back on marketing and related activities. The turnaround started happening in 2010 when a one per cent growth was recorded. Prior to 2009, sales growth was recorded in each year between 2006 and 2008, with turnover peaking at £1045 million in the latter year, driven by a series of major sporting events. MBD predicts that demand for corporate hospitality will continue to stay strong in some areas because of the positive effects of the London 2012 Olympic Games and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. That increase is expected to gather pace as the events approach. There is reason to believe that the Queen’s Jubilee could have a similar effect. The statistics underline what has been known for a long time, that companies are prepared to invest in corporate hospitality if they can see something

to be gained from it. The recent increase in growth underlined the importance that business still places on showing clients and staff alike that there is life after work. One key reason for the sector’s enduring popularity is that it allows firms to maintain relationships with clients. In a fast-moving age dominated by the Internet, texting and Cloud Computing, the personal touch is still highly valued. Often it is when client and customer are together, watching a sporting event or enjoying a good meal, that business is done, that relationships are forged and deals are struck. Creating that kind of environment takes many forms. For many companies, it often revolves around sporting events, a trip to the races, a day at the cricket, perhaps a meal followed by watching a football match. There are other options, trips and teambuilding events among them. The key to them all is time away from the office and a sense that the company staging the corporate hospitality values those whom it has invited.

What is CAD? CAD is computer aided design. CAD skills are fundamental to many jobs across the economy.

Why are CAD jobs typically well paid? "As fitted" CAD drawings are often a requirement before work is signed off and invoices paid. The production of CAD drawings is a key company activity. CAD operators are respected and often treated as key workers.

Can you get a CAD job without other qualifications? Many employers in Heating & Ventillation companies, Electrical constractors, Shop fitting companies etc. would provide "on the job training" if you already have good CAD skills. We provide short courses, with small groups for almost individual attention from the instructor, to accelerate your learning. They come with email supported post course practice. They are designed to give you the skills that employers need to get the job done. They are packed with tips and short cuts to make you faster and more efficient than the typical self taught CAD operator. They come with a free place on another course if you don't pass your included independent Knowledgesmart CAD skills assessment.

BD06 original.indd 30

Use these facts on your CV to get an interview. Demonstrate your CAD skills to an employer and then see if you still need a degree in philosophy. Check out typical industries where CAD is used:Access control & equipment, Aerospace Equipment, Air Conditioning, Aircraft Components, Architectural practices, Automation, Bottling machinery & Equipment, Building component manufacturers, Catering equipment. Knowledgesmart certified CAD skills are recognised by companies who use the same assessment software to assess the skills of their current staff and job candidates. You can check this out for yourself by looking at their testimonials on www.knowledgesmart.net. Remember too that it’s becoming more likely that you will be faced with a CAD skills assessment at a job interview, because in the current climate, employers don’t want to make expensive recruitment mistakes. A project manager, who works for one of our company customers, recently related his exasperation with a well qualified CAD person. Nothing worthwhile had been achieved on the first day of his appointment. In the opinion of this project manager, what was the point of CAD qualifications, if a person could not demonstrate good CAD skills. It only takes rumors, triggered through a few embarrassing mistakes like the situation above, for employers to demand a more objective recruitment process. You might find it surprising that many candidates for vacancies, with excellent CAD qualifications, would probably fail a Knowledgesmart assessment at a job interview. CAD skills can go rusty if not used regularly. Failing such an assessment would inevitably negate any existing CAD qualifications.

Already CAD qualified? Topics and questions are set by CAD managers in companies where Knowledgesmart assessment software is used. Would you pass? CAD skills can be forgotten if not used regularly. You can be a beginner or just need to update and have your CAD skills certified. 5 day CAD training courses in Worcester and London are £495+vat pp (£594 inc). Post course practice with email support is £24 per month. RCA Regeneration

RCA REGENERATION PLANNING FOR GROWTH It’s been nearly three years since RCA Regeneration Limited, a Worcestershire-based planning and development consultancy, was established and the company is moving into new premises as part of a step-change in its operations. “It might seem a risky thing to do in the current economic climate” says Managing Director Rob Csondor of the Company’s imminent expansion, “but we are finding that with the current changes in the planning system, developers are trying to get planning consents in place in advance of an upturn in the property market, if and when it comes”. In addition to taking new premises, RCA is also in the process of taking on new staff and is hoping to go down the apprenticeship route for one of those positions. RCA’s expansion is the culmination of work by both Rob and his partner and Co-Director, Sian Griffiths, to grow the business. “Initially, we were focused on undertaking development appraisals and assisting clients in applying for capital grants from various government agencies” explained Rob “but over those three years there has been significant political change and the ‘bonfire of the quangos’ has meant that we have shifted emphasis”.

Both Rob and Sian are dual-qualified Chartered Town Planners and Chartered Surveyors, so meeting changing market needs has been easy. Whilst continuing to provide development appraisal and capital grant services, RCA’s core service is now one of providing planning consultancy to a range of clients from major housebuilders and commercial developers to landowners and individuals. Their projects cover a wide spectrum, from work on major urban extensions to changes of use applications on industrial units for relatively small-scale manufacturing companies. Rob says that he believes that part of the reason for the expansion of their planning consultancy services is the value for money that they offer and their personal approach. “Unlike larger planning consultancies, we have no major overheads such as big expensive offices in city centres, which means that we do not have to pass such costs onto our clients. Many of these consultancies will also usually delegate work within their structures down to relatively junior individuals but when our clients commission us, they know that they are getting us”. Even though RCA may be expanding and taking on premises, Rob says that the costs of doing so are relatively small and that he and Sian, with a collective experience of around 35 years in the sector, will still be the main fee earners in the business. With new planning graduate Rachael Walker on the team and a new office manager, RCA hope to go from strength to strength over the coming months and years.

ADVERTORIAL

A PlANNING vOICE FOR wORCESTERSHIRE BuSINESSES Have you heard about the worcestershire Planning and Development Panel? we are a group of planning, development and architectural professionals in worcestershire who have got together to present a coherent voice for, and raise awareness amongst local businesses of the ever-changing planning and development agenda. The Worcestershire Planning and Development Panel;

n Exists to be an independent voice on planning and related policy matters directed at the re-gearing of planning and strategic planning to work with and not against the market, n We are Worcestershire property professionals from design, property and planning consultancy backgrounds with depth of knowledge of, and interest in, the County of Worcestershire and its future, n We do not engage in site-specific issues as a Panel but offer assistance and comment on planning as it affects development and design at a strategic level on a consensual and cross-disciplinary basis, n We will respond to requests by, and speak into, the processes of the Local Enterprise Partnership and Planning Policy Frameworks for Worcestershire. As a group of business people ourselves, we get together monthly to network and ensure we are representing businesses in Worcestershire adequately when it comes to some pretty technical issues. We are land agents, planning consultancies and architects and already represent a number of land owners, developers and occupiers around the County. We know what questions to ask, how to challenge decision-makers and can help negotiate through the hurdles presented by the planning system. Recently, we organised a response to the South Worcestershire Development Plan – we identified issues with market and value assumptions; the strategy for employment and housing land; dealing with climate change and the promotion of sustainable

development and design. We plan to continue to put pressure on every planning authority in Worcestershire to promote economic, social and environmental prosperity, whilst ensuring common sense prevails. Simon Underhill (dk Business Solutions Ltd.), Paul Tivey (Pinfields) and Nick Pinfield (Pinfields).

DK BuSINESS SOluTIONS AND PINFIElDS JOIN FORCES Pinfields are a firm of Chartered Accountants based in Bromsgrove, worcestershire. The company, which dates back to 1938 and serves a broad client base engaged in industry and commerce, had been searching for a suitable bookkeeping product to fit the profile for their medium and large sized clients.

Based on their own experience of software products over the years and following a careful review of the available software in the market place, it became clear that the fully customisable and comprehensive dk Business Solutions system provides the most cost effective way for Pinfield’s clients to maintain and utilise their businesses financial data. When asked what Pinfields saw as the main benefits the dk system could bring to their customers, Paul Tivey of Pinfields said that “the access to up to date financial information is key to all business owners as it enables them to make immediate and crucial decisions on their business. This is especially pertinent

in the current economic climate. A key strength of the dk system is not merely the provision of debtor, creditor and financial statements, but in addition the full summary or analysis of any aspect of the business data. From top customer and average debtor day reports to product sales and profit analysis, dk provides the strategic information to enable owners to manage their business and not let the business manage them. Pinfields have seen dk customers increase their profit margins following decisions taken from the financial data analysis dk provides.” Speaking about the partnership Simon Underhill of dk Business Solutions Ltd. said that “dk were extremely proud to partner with such a well-established and respected UK accounting firm as Pinfields and are very excited about the partnership going forward”. He added that “dk has been working closely with the accounting profession in overseas markets for a number of years and are very keen to replicate that success in the UK. A good example of this is the Icelandic market where despite being one of the hardest hit countries in the world during the economic crisis, dk has continued to grow and prosper. One of the key factors for this growth in Iceland has been dk´s close relationship with accounting firms such

Business Direction published by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce

BD06 original.indd 35

as KPMG, Deloitte, and Grant-Thornton to name a few, with all the aforementioned firms claiming that by using dk, they have been able to significantly enhance their client retention and satisfaction rate. With dk being such a comprehensive system it allows companies to run their own operations whether it is sales, purchasing, inventory management, hotel/event bookings or project billing while leaving the accounts and bookkeeping aspect to the accounting firms. A great number of accounting firms have been using dk in the cloud, where they are able to facilitate a real-time working relationship with their clients with numerous benefits for each party.” From the seamless planning and implementation process to the continuing aftercare, dk Business Solutions and Pinfields will work together to ensure that customer expectations are met. Both parties see this as a long term partnership where the goal is to develop and provide high quality business management solutions for their customers. ‘mANuFACTuRED IN THE mIDlANDS’ We are delighted by the response we’ve had, bookings are rolling in and the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Manufacturing Forum are also keen to support this initiative.”

Hewett Recruitment have joined forces with Herefordshire and worcestershire Chamber of Commerce to create ‘manufactured in the midlands’ – a manufacturing and technology showcase designed to promote the expertise and niche diversity of business in that sector across Herefordshire and worcestershire.

If you are a manufacturing or technology business in Herefordshire and Worcestershire and are interested in more information or booking a stand please contact the events team at the Chamber: 0845 641 1641 email events@hwchamber.co.uk or Ben Mannion at Hewett Recruitment on 01950 613413 email ben@hewett-recruitment.co.uk

Following feedback from Hewett Recruitment’s own clients in the manufacturing and technology industries and from the Chamber’s Manufacturing Forum. Louise explained: “Most of our client’s view us as an extension of their business and we often find ourselves discussing their future plans and aspirations as well as their frustrations and challenges. It’s a privileged position and enables us to understand what’s really happening in the business community, you could say we are a pretty good barometer of what’s going on. Although some businesses are struggling, many manufacturing and technology businesses are doing well and even very well. We are hearing much more about expansion plans these days. One of the biggest frustrations seems to be the negative press we hear every day in the media. The doom and gloom certainly doesn’t elevate confidence in UK plc. Businesses want to hear more

good news and as Vice President of Worcestershire Ambassadors and patron of the Chamber of Commerce I definitely feel like ‘banging the drum’ and shouting about all the great products, innovation and success stories I’ve seen and heard across Herefordshire and Worcestershire. ‘Manufactured in the Midlands’ is being held on 3rd May and has been designed specifically to showcase and exclusively promote Herefordshire and Worcestershire manufacturing and technologies businesses.” “We have a great venue, the Regent Conference Centre is a hidden gem situated behind the Chateau Impney – it’s a massive purpose built exhibition hall in very good order with plenty of parking for over 1000 cars. I was staggered when I saw it – you need roller skates to get around it!

THE BuSINESS OF A GREAT DEBATE

The worcestershire business community will be fiercely debating topical issues with local school pupils at a debating event coming up in the city on wednesday 28 march 2012. Held at RGS Worcester on the Tything in Worcester, and organised by Stallard March & Edwards Solicitors supported by the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, the event will be conducted to full Parliamentary debating rules, giving opposing student and business sides just 15 minutes’ warning of each topic they are to debate. Subject areas are expected to include topics on the environment, social media and employment for the next generation. Ian Stirzaker, Managing Partner of Stallard March & Edwards will be

Chairing the event and is looking forward to some lively debate. “Subjects for the panels on the day will be current and contentious. The business panels will be formed of local companies relevant to each issue. The high calibre and energy of the students from RGS Worcester Debating Society pitched against these business teams promises a structured yet provocative debate.” The event is free to attend and will be held in the RGS Worcester lecture theatre and Perrins Hall and will run from 4.15 until 7pm. As well as the debating, the event will include networking and refreshments. Those businesses interested in joining the business debating panels should contact Gary Woodman at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce at garyw@hwchamber.co.uk or contact 0845 641 1641

PART wITH A POuND DAY ON FRIDAY 9 mARCH St Richard’s Hospice is urging local people to do something different and join Part with a Pound Day on Friday 9 march. Fundraisers hope businesses, community groups, clubs and schools around the county will make 9th March a day to remember and raise cash for the Worcestershire charity. St Richard’s Corporate Fundraiser Rachel Jones said, “Dress Up, Dress Down, Dress Wacky or just simply donate £1 not to dress up, the decision is yours. Just

£1 on one day could make a huge difference to adults across Worcestershire with life threatening illnesses.” She added, “ It’s entirely up to individuals and companies or groups what they would like to do for their £1 - it may be asking customers to donate £1, wear coloured themed clothing, eating cake, or wearing a funky tie.” Everyone who registers will receive a fundraising pack with lots of ideas. The event is kindly sponsored by ClarkeWood Consulting, the Worcestershire based Specialist IT Recruiter in Copenhagen Street, Worcester. To register online go to

BUDGET 2012 AND EVENTS The Chamber is preparing for changes on the horizon in the Chancellor’s budget, which is to be delivered to the House of Commons on wednesday 21 march.

lOCAl BuSINESS - IN BRuSSElS! The Chamber is preparing for its biennial trip to Brussels, a visit co-ordinated with west midlands Chambers llP designed to put regional business on the European legislative agenda. The visit has been prepared for Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 October to coincide with the British Chambers of Commerce ‘Parliament of Enterprises’. The visit will involve a tour of European Parliament in

Brussels, and a chance to see debate in action (and question the floor), whilst also offering the opportunity to lunch with our local MEPs and discuss issues with key UK influencers behind the scenes. The trip is a fantastic lobbying opportunity for businesses affected by key EU trade legislation, and will be an estimated expense of £500 per delegate for travel, accommodation and subsistence costs. If you are interested in strengthening the Herefordshire and Worcestershire voice on the visit, please contact policy@hwchamber.co.uk or call 0845 641 1641 ext 242.

wESTmINSTER luNCH The Chamber has organised a lunch in Westminster on 13 March which is set to provide local businesses with a unique lobbying opportunity on the issue of the national economy. In the run up to the Chancellor’s budget, the visit will use the Chamber’s Area Council representatives and patron members to provide a representation of the local economy in terms of business size, sector and location.

All 8 MPs from the two counties are set to receive the local business visit, which will also be supported by John Longworth, Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, and Andrew Tyrie MP, Chair of the Treasury Select Committee. Capacity on the visit is limited, but the Chamber will be working to represent views of all local member businesses. If there is an issue you would like discussed on either a local or national platform, please contact

The central focus will be a Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce submission to the Chancellor’s office, which will lobby for a scrap in the business rates rise and a reduction in fuel duty, whilst scrutinising the measures affecting business that have been prominent in the Coalition’s deficit reduction programme. On delivery of the Chancellor’s speech, the Chamber will be working to deliver events to help highlight the changes and issues affecting local businesses. For Herefordshire members, strategic members Baker Tilly will be offering a live screening of the budget as a lunchtime attraction for visitors to the Chamber’s Herefordshire Business Expo, which will be running the same day. A number of the firm’s senior accountants will be available to interpret the Chancellor’s measures and proposals from the Baker Tilly offices, only a short walk up Holmer Road from the Expo’s Hereford Leisure Centre base. Meanwhile for the following morning, the Chamber will be working with patron members Crowther Beard LLP to deliver a free Budget breakfast for Worcestershire members from the Pitchview Suite of Worcester Warriors. The Chamber’s Chief Executive, Mike Aston will be delivering a speech on the Chamber’s reaction, followed by Gary Woodman Executive Director of Worcestershire LEP, whilst Crowther Beard will be on hand to deliver a professional review of the Chancellor’s announcements. St Michael’s Hospice

ST mICHAEl’S HOSPICE KEY TO THE FuTuRE The Hospice continues to look at innovative ways of securing income with consideration to social and business enterprises. Cost efficiency and effectiveness are essential. The volunteer model adopted by all departments within the Hospice, saves an estimated £800,000 per year. It optimises access to skills, experience and qualities and ensures that we are able to deliver the breadth of services to patients and their families.

St michael’s Hospice recognises that working in partnership with its business and local community is key to the future St Michael’s Hospice is not part of the NHS. We are an independent charity and 90% of our income comes from public fundraising. You can find out more about how the general public helps us to deliver our services in this and future articles. The current economic climate is having a significant effect on many local and national charities with a number losing grant funding, contracts or going into liquidation. Despite significant local support and some statutory and grant funding. It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure certain and sustainable income streams. Competition for funds is much greater and concentration of local giving is at risk of being undermined by the proactive positioning of national charities. The value of legacies has been impacted by

The community of Herefordshire and surrounds has a limited supply of funds to give to charitable causes. We are highly aware of the need to spend every penny donated thoughtfully, wisely and efficiently. Wherever possible maximising the gift through the recovery of gift aid, partnership working and matched funding opportunities.

You can make sure that we can continue to support people with complex conditions to live independently for as long as possible. You can ensure that patients and their families have all the support they need at a time in their lives when every day matters more than ever.

Business News INDEPENDENT MUSEUM A STEP CLOSER TO REALITY Worcestershire businesses asked to help towards closing the final funding gap. An independently-run museum, linked to the world-renowned Ashmolean in Oxford, is a step closer to reality in Broadway, following a one off capital receipt from the County Council. The project sees one of Broadway’s most significant 17thC buildings, prominently located in its High Street, donated by a local benefactor initially for 30 years, available for conversion from a house to a community-run museum. Exhibits in the museum are to be lent and curated by the Ashmolean, in a manner fitting to the village and building, their setting and ethos. In addition the Director of the Ashmolean will play both a key leadership role and contribute staff time across the wide range of museum functions necessary to its establishment. The conversion will cost around £302,000 in total. £213,000 has been raised. The Trust seeks donations and sponsorship support for the remaining funding of £80,000.

GRADUATE EMPLOYMENT – UNIVERSITY OF WORCESTER

Tourism is the third biggest employer in Worcestershire and Broadway, which is in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Ashmolean in Broadway is seen to have the potential to draw in visitors and raise

the County’s profile locally, nationally and worldwide. Councillor Liz Eyre, Local County and District Councillor said: “The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is a world-class institution. It is incredibly exciting that the Ashmolean name is coming to Worcestershire. Long term the ripples from this project will impact around the County benefitting retail trade, its heritage offering, adding to Worcestershire’s sense of place in a significant way.” If you are able to support: host an event, fund raise, donate, give support in kind please contact Cllr Liz Eyre:

With unemployment figures on the rise and more graduates leaving university without a job the University of Worcester continues its campaign to help boost graduate employment in the region. With their flagship Salaried Graduate Internship Scheme in its third year they are currently looking to match more graduates than in previous years with employers across the West Midlands. They have a pool of graduates waiting to be matched with employers, including business, marketing, digital design & IT graduates. The university will help you with an initial shortlist, then its up to you to interview and select your own employee. They also offer the Work Based Learning qualification (which is optional) which you can use as an opportunity for your employee to work on a project set by you under the guidance and support of the University.

WORCESTERSHIRE NHS EMBARKS ON A REVIEW OF HEALTH SERVICES

So, are you eligible for the scheme:

The county’s NHS organisations are at the very start of the process and there are no predetermined answers. However, there is agreement that ‘no change’ is not an option.

• Are you based in West Midlands? • Are you an SME with less than 250 employees? If you answered yes to the above and are interested in taking on a graduate and injecting some fresh new talent into your workplace, then get in touch Laura Lewis, Graduate Internship & Employment Co-ordinator, Laura.lewis@worc.ac.uk 01905 855354 www.worcester.ac.uk

The NHS in Worcestershire is reviewing health services to secure the best possible healthcare for county residents that are sustainable for the future. The main focus of the review will be on acute hospital services, but it will also look at the wider health and care system, particularly in relation to specific pathways of care between the acute hospitals and community and primary care. Worcestershire health services are facing the same challenges as the wider NHS, with services needing to change as society changes and public resources come under pressure.

Local clinicians will lead the ‘Joint Services Review’ (JSR) and propose options for how services will be delivered in the future. The process will involve patients, professionals, public and partners throughout. It is anticipated that the review will be completed by November 2012, including a three-month period of formal public consultation. www.worcestershirehealth.nhs.uk/jointservices-review.

MEMBER OF HEREFORDSHIRE AND WORCESTERSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HELPS MANCHESTER UNITED ACHIEVE A FIRST Manchester United has once again proved their desire to be the best off the pitch as well as on it, by becoming the first major stadium in the UK to achieve the international Environmental Management System standard, ISO14001. For the last 10 years, Manchester United has worked closely with Mike Goodfellow-Smith from Quest for Future Solutions to improve the club’s sustainability. This has paid off for them with savings mounting to over £500k so far, and closer working relationships with some of their key suppliers that have resulted in additional cost and process efficiency savings. During 2011, Manchester United’s dedication to reducing their carbon emissions was recognised when the club achieved the Carbon Trust Standard, and was at the top of the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme league tables. They’ve now been awarded ISO14001. To help other clubs and large venues, Quest has published a guide to achieving ISO14001 and ISO20121 certification, written specifically for stadium managers. THE PRINCE OF WALES JOINS HEREFORD CATHEDRAL PARTY HRH The Prince of Wales made a visit to the reception of the London Gathering of Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust’s London supporters in No3 Parliament Street, the Official Residence of the Clerk of the House of Commons, which was held earlier this month. The Clerk, Robert Rogers, is a former Chairman of the Perpetual Trust and extended the invitation to the Trust’s Patron. The biannual drinks party draws together key supporters, including a number of businessmen who split their time between Herefordshire, London and

internationally. Among the party were representatives of Stanhope plc, the developers of the Old Cattle Market in Hereford, who announced their continuing support of the Trust’s annual Advent in London service at the Guards’ Chapel (Tuesday 4 December 2012). Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust has a programme of London events, including an annual Westminster Quiz, an autumn dinner at one of the top London clubs and the annual service in the Guards’ Chapel. perpetual.trust@herefordcathedral.org

Five minutes with Jane Sullivan of Black Pear Media What does your company do? The core of my business is good writing. I produce customer and in-house magazines, websites, e-newsletters, press releases and social media content for a range of companies in the region.

Who are your clients? 2012 is going to be a busy time for two of my clients: the official BT Olympic artist Jeremy Houghton and the GB rower Alex Gregory. I’ve also worked on campaigns for artist Dylan Izaak, Gloucestershire Riverford – the organic fruit & veg company, and Searchmate, Jayne Sullivan one of the country’s largest personal introduction agencies. Another client is Paul Hervey-Brookes, the

garden designer, who is designing a major attraction at the Spring Gardening Show. I have also produced magazines for charities such as Breast Cancer Care.

What’s the best thing about running your own business? The support and help I have received from business people around the county. There are some great networking groups around and people have been so willing to offer advice and recommendations.

And the worst? Doing the books! That, and seeing companies wasting money on poorly written, badly designed magazines and press material that I could have done better! LOOKING AFTER YOUR EMPLOYEES - MAKES GOOD BUSINESS SENSE Employers lose 13 billion per year due to illness and over 175 million working days are lost due to ill health. Simple measures to prevent and manage ill health can have a real impact on the bottom line; over two thirds of employers agree that employee wellbeing has a direct impact on productivity. Last Word

NEXT ISSUE .... Accessing Funding and Finance The next edition of BD will focus on Accessing Funding and Finance so for the last word for this edition we are focussing on the Funding Finder tool on the website and speaking to Rebecca Erskine, Head of Marketing at Idox Information Solutions

Helping Businesses to Grow – Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s Funding Finder Tool As the economic downturn continues to bite, it’s as important as ever for small businesses to identify alternative sources of support. Grant funding has for many years helped small businesses to undertake a number of key activities from start up to marketing initiatives, staff recruitment, training and investment in research and equipment. One of the biggest challenges in accessing funding is identifying where to source it in the first place. Government announcements will refer to new injections of cash for certain activities – but identifying how then to tap into this funding proves difficult. Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber has teamed up with grant content specialists Idox Information Solutions to provide a Funding Finder service, allowing businesses to run an online funding search to identify potential grant funding.



Although funding programmes as a whole have not escaped Government cuts, a number of new business funds have in fact been launched over the past twelve months, mainly aimed at getting start-ups off the ground and reinforcing the Government’s belief that more brand new and early-stage businesses can help to kick-start the economy into a sustained period of growth. There have been various campaigns promoting starting up in business as a means of combating redundancy, for instance, such as Start-up Britain, the GREAT campaign and Local Business Accelerators.

Along with the monthly Shell   LiveWIRE Awards and recently re-opened Fund101 for UK entrepreneurs, there are a number of programmes to which businesses can apply.   Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s Funding Finder tool includes information on such funding pots ranging from a few hundred pounds to thousands, and for a whole host of projects from putting together a marketing or business plan to a research project in partnership with a university.

Rebecca Erskine, Head of Marketing at Idox Information Solutions offers advice on how businesses can achieve success in securing funding, “There is no one-size-fits-all in terms of how a business can win grant funding. How to put together your application depends entirely on the programme you’re applying to. My top tips on applying for funding would be as follows: 1. Make sure you’re eligible for the programme to which you’re applying. Even if your project is excellent, the funding provider will be unable to offer you support if you don’t meet the eligibility criteria. 2. Consider your project as a multi-faceted cube – there may be many different components to your project – investment in equipment, staff training, marketing and exporting – but you will want to switch the emphasis of your project according to the funder you’re applying to and what their specific interests and policy drivers are 3. Is your budget realistic and does it add up? Funding providers want to see their money well spent. 4. Are you able to demonstrate that the project will achieve specific outcomes? For example, staff retention or recruitment? Training in particular skills? An increase in competitiveness? 5. Read, read and read again before you submit your application to make sure that all sections are completed, enclosures included, it’s signed by the appropriate person and submitted in the correct fashion (either by email or post, or both – and including the correct postage!) It’s also useful to pass it by a ‘critical friend’ – a friend or family member who knows little about your area of work but, as a layman, can still understand what you’re trying to achieve from how you’ve described the project in your application.

AGRICULTURAL SEMINAR FOCUSES ON CHANGE AHEAD Over 50 farmers and agricultural businesses attended Baker Tilly’s annual agricultural seminar held recently at Hereford Racecourse in conjunction with farming consultants Andersons Midlands and HSBC’s agricultural team. An initial economic overview given by HSBC was followed by presentations from Lucie Hammond and John Pelham. John Pelham gave a detailed overview of Andersons’ Outlook 2012 research highlighting sector performance over the last five years and examining some of factors likely to impact both the arable and pastoral farming industries including changes to the Common Agricultural Policy and its potential effect to farmers. Baker Tilly’s Lucie Hammond highlighted some of the key tax issues being faced by farmers and how to mitigate their impact. The areas that generated the greatest debate were: Agricultural property relief – ensuring that this valuable inheritance tax relief is retained when considering diversification options and changes in business structure. 52% income tax and NIC – the general feeling was that wherever possible the objective is to lessen the burden of paying tax at this rate (50% income tax rate and 2% national insurance). The introduction of a limited company can work in many instances. Capital reinvestment – The current 100% annual investment allowance on the first £100,000 of expenditure will reduce to the first £25,000 of expenditure from April 2012, so wherever possible capital investment should be brought forward. Commenting on the event, Lucie Hammond said: “Today’s farming community is under constant pressure to ensure maximum production in spite of rising costs and inflation. It is therefore more important than ever that they embrace change to try and prevent profit erosion as Government seeks to reduce future subsidy payments.”

Businesses seeking to identify suitable pots of funding are encouraged to take a look at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber’s Funding Finder: www.hwchamber.co.uk/ funding-finder.aspx
