Welcome to September/October edition of Business Direction In July we celebrated the quality of the businesses in our two counties at our annual Chamber Business Awards at the Worcester Cathedral. The calibre of entries was as always of a high quality however, on the evening we declared 11 companies as category winners and one company was deemed overall Business of the Year. More about the winners can be found on page 16 and 17. The next stage in this process is that our companies go on to compete in the West Midlands Regional Awards which are announced during September and then the regional winners awards compete in the British Chambers of Commerce national Awards which are announced in November. Well done in particular to H Weston & Sons Ltd who are our Business of the Year and in particular to Helen Thomas, who continues to oversee the development of a company which goes from strength to strength. It was particularly pleasing on the night to support the Prince’s Trust and once again the business community which contributed a significant amount to this worthy cause.

The business community in our two counties is showing nervous optimism and growth. We have seen that manufacturing companies and exporters are doing well and we are also seeing an improvement in construction. We hope that this continues and I urge you to contact the Chamber Team if your company requires any support. The Chamber also continues to work closely with Local Enterprise Partnerships to ensure the business community is best served. Finally, in this edition we are looking at Policy, Health and Wellbeing all of which are vital to productive businesses and the local business community. Enjoy this edition and as always your feedback is welcomed. mikea@hwchamber.co.uk

We continue to remain in a busy period for events at the Chamber and have added a number of new events recently to the programme; two that I would particularly like to mention are the Manufacturing Forum (you can find out more on page 40) and the new Redditch Networking Breakfast, which we look forward to repeating.

Jack Roughan has just completed his studies at New College Worcester. Jack is partially sighted and struggles to see objects in the distance, details and things very close up. He is also affected by bright lights but despite this has proved to be a very talented artist.

To raise awareness of the ability of visually impaired children and raise money (he is hoping at least £500) for New College Worcester, Jack has decided to auction a piece of his work entitled ‘Metal Insects’ in a Landscape. The work will be on display at the Crowther Beard stand at Worcestershire Business Expo at the Sixways Stadium on Thursday 6 October 2011. Bids are to be made to Anne Priestly at New College, John Painter at Crowther Beard, or Sarah Davies at Worcester News and will be opened at the Expo at 2pm. Jack’s art talent was not the only thing that was discovered whilst he was at New College Worcester, a PE teacher noticed his athleticism and potential and he now represents GB at a number of national and international events in the classification of T12 (VI category). For more information on the auction please contact John Painter at jhp@crowtherbeard.com or on 01905 454854.

This partnership of Kingspan Insulation, E.ON, Wetherby Building Systems and Entec UK triumphed at the 2011 Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management awards ceremony which took place at the newly-refurbished Savoy Hotel in London in May. The award for Best Waste Management Initiative in the Commercial and Public Sector recognised the work undertaken by the partnership. The team at Kingspan Insulation were extremely delighted that the entry put forward by E.ON was successful, especially as the project partnership was not based on a commercial agreement but resulted from the interest of key personnel in each company to develop a more sustainable approach to waste management. There has also been some more recycling activity at a local level with funding provided by the Kingspan Insulation Community Trust to pupils at Lady Hawkins School, Kington, for the purchase of six purpose-built recycling bins to be placed around the school; three for plastic bottles and three for cans.

Kingspan Insulation has not only been busy recycling waste from its Pembridge factory, but with a new partnership scheme it has been diverting construction site waste from landfill to energy recovery via its innovative waste take-back scheme.

Remember that most of our waste is recyclable, and what may seem like rubbish to you could become a brand new plastic bottle, tin or newspaper instead of ending up at the tip. The teamwork that won the Waste Management Award, and the sterling efforts of the pupils at Lady Hawkins School just go to show that it only takes the actions of a few people to make a big difference to the amount of waste we end up sending to landfill.

The Midland Festival Chorus, which uniquely performs together once a year, brings amateur singers to Worcester from all over the UK and Europe, singing this year with professional period instrument orchestra Rejouissance. Local singers, including school pupils, students and their teachers and people of all ages and strands of the community will sing together, led by internationally renowned conductor Malcolm Goldring. They will perform Bach’s Magnificat and Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor.

NOT EVERYTHING IS WASTE!

YOUNG DESIGNER WINS NATIONAL AWARD Worcester student Adam Pettitt has won a national competition for young designers with his iSurf Trolley, an innovative device to transport windsurfing equipment. The Manufacturing Technology Association runs an annual TDI Challenge (Technology Design and Innovation) across three age groups, with Adam winning in the 17-19 category. STUNNING WIN FOR WORCESTERSHIRE IN BUSINESS GAME FINALS A team from Bromsgrove School ‘used a tactical approach’ to beat thousands of local pupils nationally at Birmingham’s Metropole Hotel, and secure the top award in the Business Game, where accountants and leaders of industry meet students to tackle real life problems. The success of Bromsgrove School saw them win the £3,000 top award at the National Final in Birmingham. The Business Game is organised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. Celia Adams, Former Chairman of the ICAEW in Worcestershire, who had masterminded the Worcester event, said: “We are delighted that a local school has won, competing successfully with more than 2,000 students.“

YOU’RE HIRED! Year 10 pupils from The Chase School had to prove they had what ‘IT’ takes, when they visited to take part in Postcode Anywhere’s Internet Enterprise Activity Day. Staff at the technology company hosted a lively business challenge based on The Apprentice and Dragons’ Den, with an internet and enterprise focus. The day’s activities included a challenge where the students had to build a web page to promote an App (software application) of their choice. They had to design it, market it and then present it to a panel of

His invention is a lightweight, folding aluminium trolley designed to carry water sports equipment of any size to and from beaches, lakes and other watersport sites.

The success followed the best-ever Worcestershire heats for the national Business Game earlier this year, as local pupils from across Worcestershire and Herefordshire met business experts to tackle real life problems together.

Adam says: “I am a keen windsurfer, and after seeing my dad try and drag his board and sail out of the lake I wanted to create something to stop that problem. After lots of research I found that there are no good products on the market for a reasonable price that a private windsurfer can use. I didn’t think that I could win this competition, so getting into the final four, from around 100 entries was brilliant, and winning overall was a fantastic feeling!”

In the finals, each Bromsgrove student won £500, a visit to ICAEW HQ at Moorgate to meet with Chief Executive Michael Izza and a dinner. investors including Guy Mucklow and Jamie Turner the two principal directors of Postcode Anywhere. John Palmer, who is Curriculum Leader for ICT at The Chase, said: “Recent evidence suggests that a meaningful experience of the workplace is one of the most important factors in gaining decent employment. We are committed to working in partnership with local employers to ensure that our students are confident, employable and ready to face the future: however technically complex that might be!” www.chase.worcs.sch.uk

A WORCESTERSHIRE CONSULTANT HAS BEEN APPOINTED AS THE FIRST CHAIR OF THE NHS HEALTH AT WORK NETWORK Dr Ursula Ferriday, Consultant in Occupational Medicine at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and Head of the Working Well Centre in Worcester which provides occupational health and wellbeing services, will keep the Department of Health informed about workplace / employee health matters and will promote best clinical and business practice for delivering health at work services for staff. Comprising 165 NHS occupational health teams, the Network will also act as a forum for the exchange of information, expertise and standardisation of practice and will help co-ordinate service delivery to meet customer need.

Pay rises and bonuses have been in short supply in recent years, so now might be the time to introduce a benefit that both rewards loyal staff and safeguards the interests of your business.

Dr Ferriday is supported by nine other occupational health specialists. Together they will be involving and engaging members in setting the strategy for the network to ensure improved health and wellbeing for all NHS staff.

Private Medical Insurance as a benefit is greatly valued; for employees it delivers peace of mind, the knowledge that immediate medical treatment in a suitable location is available when required. For business owners, it can ensure that employees return to their desks as soon as is possible.

How do you manage the health of your staff? If you would like information or advice on Occupational Health and wellbeing for your company, you can contact Dr Ferriday at the Working Well Centre on 01905 760693 or visit www.workingwellcentre.co.uk

When it comes to comparing Meerkats the new gang at West Midland Safari Park have come up trumps. Not only are they hugely popular with visitors for their unusual and skittish behaviour, but they have also produced three tiny kits that have just emerged from their nest box to face visitors for the first time. The kits have been nicknamed Alec, Sydney and Henrik by staff, they are barely 10cms tall and are gradually making more appearances with their mother in the new exhibit - Meerkat Mayhem - that is situated in the Park’s new African Village. www.wmsp.co.uk/meerkatbabies

‘WORCESTERSHIRE WORKS WEll’ With everyone feeling the squeeze in the current economic climate, the business case for improving employee health and well-being has never been more pertinent. Last year, UK businesses spent on average £760 per employee on sickness absence alone. In addition to this, ever growing evidence is proving that a healthier workforce is a more productive and sustainable work force. With this in mind, a new toolkit has been developed to help Worcestershire businesses improve the health and well-being of their work force. The toolkit has been produced as part of the ‘Worcestershire Works Well’ initiative and offers local businesses the opportunity to be accredited for proactively making positive changes.

Works, Sports Partnership, Regulatory Services, Jobcentre plus and Department of Health. The Worcestershire Works Well Toolkit will be available to all organisations of any size, including those from the public, private and the third sector, who are located in Worcestershire. The toolkit will be officially launched at the Business Expo which is to be held on Thursday 6 October 2011 at the Worcester Rugby Club. Worcestershire Works Well representatives will also be on hand at the Expo to answer any queries and provide information. Alternatively, you can contact Vicki Moulston on (01905) 733153 or email

Member benefits and solutions HEAlTHY STAff HEAlTHY bUSINESS Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce understands the importance of ensuring that your workforce is healthy. The reduction in productivity when employees are off sick can cause serious problems to large businesses and can seriously cripple small to medium businesses. Members of the Chamber of Commerce can access the following benefits designed to keep employees healthy: Health at Hand Advice Line (FREE) A free 24/7 health information service available to you and all of your employees. Available only through AXA PPP healthcare, the Health at Hand free phone information service is available around the clock. Pick up the phone and you can speak, in total confidence, to experienced health professionals any time, day or night, every day of the year!

EMPLOYEE RETENTION THROUGH AN EFFECTIVE BENEFITS PACKAGE Successful and ambitious companies of any size value their employees. They invest time and money in recruitment and, as a result, do not wish to ‘lose’ profitable, high quality staff to other employers. Retention of key personnel is of paramount importance. Aside from salary and a positive motivational working environment, the benefits package that an employee enjoys plays a significant role in the decision making process of whether to stay with their existing employer or to move to pastures new. The offering of pensions, healthcare, life assurance and other flexible benefits creates tremendous opportunity for employers to achieve their goals; to not only recruit and retain the best people, but also to reward and motivate them. The English Mutual Group is a specialist provider of Employee Benefits; supporting the needs and requirements of a large number of corporate clients, from small family run businesses to large, globally recognised household names. The company’s expertise in this field is something of which it is very proud.

As a result of recent economic trends, where employers have been forced to attract, retain and motivate staff through via means other than salary increases and bonus packages and the looming spectre of pension compulsion in 2012 (where all firms will be forced to contribute to their employees’ pensions), the value of employee benefits has never been higher. It is for this reason that the Chamber has partnered with The English Mutual Group to provide members with advice and guidance in implementing and managing an effective employee benefit package. Beginning in September 2011, English Mutual will contact members to discuss employee benefits options and opportunities. They will also be launching an advice line where members can discuss their employee retention issues and look in depth at the package that they offer to their employees.

Westfield Health (£1.10 - £6.35 per employee per week) Members’ employees can reclaim essential healthcare costs up to specified limits based on the level agreed by the employer. In return for employer-paid weekly premiums, employees can claim tax-free lump sums towards the cost of everyday healthcare including dental, optical, therapy treatments and consultation with a specialist. The plan also includes a scanning benefit, which provides fast access to MRI, CT and PET Scanning facilities. These state-of-the-art machines can provide diagnosis of serious illnesses such as heart disease, brain disorders and cancer. ADVERTORIAL

WHAT’S IN A NAME? Ian Barber explains why Mercia Waste Management’s proposed Energy-from-Waste plant will be a boost for the local economy. Use the word ‘disposal’ and a number of other words or phrases come to mind - ‘the end of the line’ ‘unwanted’ or ‘of no value.’ Historically that has certainly been true for the management of waste. Our rubbish has been buried in the ground over centuries as the easy and cheap option. Conversely, the word ‘recovery’ conjures up another set of terms – ‘revival,’ ‘retrieval’, ‘improvement.’ ‘Recovery’ sounds and feels good! Economically speaking, we all want to see recovery and an early return to growth, but for the waste industry and its clients, recovery means getting value out of materials that we have consigned to the dustbin. After businesses and households have worked hard, purchased wisely and changed habits to reduce the amount of waste they generate, and have taken advantage of the many services now available for recycling, there is still an opportunity to recover value in terms of energy from the residual waste that cannot sensibly be recycled. That is the essence and purpose of Mercia Waste Management’s EnviRecover Energy-from-Waste facility proposed for the major employment site of Hartlebury Trading Estate. When built, it will take 200,000 tonnes a year of residual waste and combust it to generate electricity; enough to supply a town the size of Kidderminster. Operation of EnviRecover is classed under EU legislation as a ‘recovery’ activity,

and UK legislation considers energy-from-waste as contributing to the generation of renewable energy. By combusting this residual waste EnviRecover will also have the potential to supply direct steam, hot water or even cooling (through adsorption chillers) to local business and industry. Combined Heat and Power, or CHP as it is known, is widely used across northern Europe. In the UK, with

energy costs continuing to spiral, and with growing concerns over our ability to deliver secure indigenous renewable supplies, EnviRecover is too good an opportunity to miss. Through co-operation with local authorities and business organisations, Mercia Waste Management is working to market this unique opportunity to help attract new business investment to Worcestershire. In the short term, of course, the facility has yet to be built, and there will be a great opportunity for local service and equipment suppliers to take advantage of the £120 million worth of investment coming into the area. Construction is scheduled to commence in late 2012. We are confident that Recovery is definitely on the horizon in Worcestershire and Herefordshire. To learn more about the renewable energy opportunity of EnviRecover at Hartlebury, contact Ian Barber, Mercia Waste Management on 01386 443376. In March 2011, Worcestershire County Council’s Planning Committee minded to approve, unanimously, Mercia Waste Management’s planning application for EnviRecover. The application has now been referred to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, for determination following a Public Inquiry which is scheduled for November this year. For more information on EnviRecover, go to www. envirecover.co.uk or phone 01386 443376.

PRACTISING WHAT WE PREACH Local renewable energy specialists Caplor Energy have unveiled a state-of-the-art 40kWp solar photovoltaic system on one of barn roofs at its farm base in Fownhope, Hereford. The experienced Herefordshire company decided to extend the original 10kWp system installed last April with a further 30kWp after the PV performed 12% better than expected. The system, which has an array of 208 panels on the south facing roof, is expected to generate over 30,000kWh a year and provide all the office’s power needs over the course of each year. Caplor Managing Director, Gareth Williams says, “We originally installed a smaller system just over a year ago and we were so pleased with how this performed that we decided to increase the size substantially. It’s a very large investment but the feed-in tariff means that the payback period is likely to be under eight years.” “We are also very keen to reduce our carbon footprint in any way we can, so the added benefits of using renewable energy technologies is very important to us.” Caplor Energy install renewable energy technologies such as solar PV and solar thermal systems to homes, farms and businesses based in Herefordshire and Wales. www.caplorfarm.co.uk

PARENTAL LEAVE

MODERN WORKPLACES CONSULTATION The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills has recently closed its Modern Workplaces Consultation, which outlined a number of proposals regarding parental leave, flexible working and equal pay auditing.

The Chamber’s results for QES Quarter 2 have now been published. The report highlights a number of problems in the local economy, including poor cashflow and difficulties with inflation and raw material prices.

Regarding parental leave, the proposals are set to replace the ‘first-year leave entitlement’ with;

The Chamber has also published and submitted its response to the Worcester City Centre Vision document. To view both documents, please visit www.hwchamber.co.uk and view the policy pages.

n Four months maternity leave around birth n 1 month paid leave for the mother and father each n 7 months flexible parental leave (with 4 months paid) The proposals are anticipated to have a hostile reception from many UK businesses. In April, a British Chambers of Commerce survey of over 5,800 business revealed that three quarters believed changes to paternity regulations would be detrimental to business, which was a package of measures much smaller in scope. The Business Secretary Vince Cable commented: “Our proposals will encourage greater choice by giving employees and their employers the flexibility to find arrangements to suit them both. These measures crucially give parents much greater choice over how to balance their work and family commitments.” However David Frost, the Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce reacted: “The proposed

new system will bring huge new costs and risks to businesses, and make it difficult for them to plan their workforce. Businesses are trying to get to grips with the changes to parental leave introduced earlier this year, yet the government is already consulting on a new system. Aren’t six changes to parental leave in a decade enough for businesses to contend with?” The formal Modern Workplaces proposals are scheduled to be introduced as a Government White Paper in the next parliamentary agenda. For more information, please contact the Policy Team on

policy@hwchamber.co.uk.

In July, the Chamber hosted a business premises planning event aimed at preparing member businesses for big changes to planning processes on the horizon.

The workshop reviewed a number of additional initiatives to be introduced, outlining what businesses can expect from Neighbourhood Development Plans, the Community Right to Build and changes to the Community Infrastructure Levy.

The final section of the event focused on the potential opportunities for employment land development, to which the Chamber will be submitting responses to all development plans across the two counties in the coming months. The event was a very constructive insight into what promises to be a radical reform of planning processes. For more information on the changes to the planning system, please contact the Policy Team on 0845 641 1641 or email policy@hwchamber.co.uk

ENSURING YOUR POLICIES ARE UP TO DATE Often the mere mention of ‘policy’ and ‘HR’ switches people off and when both are mentioned in the same sentence this can prove a double whammy! Yes policies are boring, however increasingly given the nature of our work we are seeing business risk exposure in many forms:- n Opting out of policies, ‘we know our people, they would never do that’ n Swapping and sharing policy documentation between-networks ‘it’s more cost effective’

SAVILLS PLANNING EVENT Working in collaboration with Savills UK, planning experts presented in Malvern to a room of over 30 member businesses from across the two counties. The event was prompted by the proposals in the Localism Bill; which subject to legislative approval, stands to bring a radical overhaul of the planning system and place key decision making powers in local community groups.

The employment legislative calendar can change twice yearly, so yes you can argue its cost prohibitive to keep documentation in line with this, communicate, consult and engage your employees in line with the revisions, however when weighed up against the costs of not doing so, can you afford not to? Enterprise zone given go ahead Government ministers have given approval to a proposal for an Enterprise Zone put forward by the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership at Rotherwas in Herefordshire. The Rotherwas site was submitted as the selection for the Marches LEP, which has the vision of developing space adjacent to the relief road as a regional hub of specialist defence, security, food and drink and advanced manufacturing enterprises. Marches Enterprise Zone will accelerate the creation of an additional 2000 jobs by 2015 in the private sector. Obtaining Enterprise Zone status will pump prime Hereford and Herefordshire as a credible investment location. The sector focus of the Zone will be defence procurement and the wider Security Sector, both of these sectors are predicted growth for at least the next 10 years. The focus of the Zone will very much be on embedding businesses in the local economy. This will be achieved through encouraging local business start-ups, local business expansion and attracting businesses from overseas. The opportunity provides a distinctive Unique Selling Point for Herefordshire and the wider region. The proposed Zone is a contained site covering 61.5ha (164 acres). The timescale, process and cost for businesses from inception to construction will be significantly reduced and simplified enabling the quick delivery of development opportunities.

The development of the Enterprise Zone will be project managed by a board.

to put Herefordshire on the map nationally and internationally.”

It is also expected that the Enterprise Zone will have wider benefits to the local economy.

Neil Kerr, Chairman of the Herefordshire Business Board said: This is a huge shot in the arm for the county’s economy and I’m convinced we can attract not just UK companies, but companies from across the world to bring their skills, expertise and business to Rotherwas.”

n The Enterprise Zone is expected to lead to at least £90 million additional investment from the private sector by 2015 (source SQW). n Through the defence and security sector focus we will link to GCHQ, QinetiQ, Malvern Hills Science Park and MOD procurement facilities. n The Herefordshire Business Board will provide small business support in the form of a Mentoring Scheme, access to legal and financial advice, and access to business finance, through the LEP investment group which includes membership from investment banks and venture capitalists. n Herefordshire Council are committed to recycling capital receipts from land sales back into the Enterprise Zone and associated infrastructure. n The Enterprise Zone scheme is complementary to the plan for the redevelopment of the town centre which is a retail-led scheme being implemented starting September 2011 by leading national private sector developer Stanhope. Taking the healthy approach to business success

The importance of health in the workplace is increasingly being recognised by employers who realise that they have a role to play in ensuring a fit and well workforce in return for improved productivity. Recent research underlines the point in graphic terms. One report, produced in 2009 by the Work Foundation in partnership with RAND Europe and Aston Business School, showed that 27.6 million working days were lost in 2007/08 in Great Britain due to work-related illness. Recent CBI figures suggests that each year, absence costs the economy £13.4 billion.

The Work Foundation report suggested that help offered in the workplace can be effective and should go beyond the mere absence of illness or disability. It should be understood as a ‘state of complete physical, mental and social well-being’ as identified by the World Health Organization. One of the companies that works to help businesses address the issues is MHTLife.com. Mark Hamilton-Taylor, from the company said that health has a key role to play in shaping business success. He said: “Research shows that 9.6million days were lost due to ill health in 2010 and that there ar epotential savings of 100 billion in reducing working age ill health. The figures indicate that 40 per cent of absence is related to stress and that one in four workers are affected by it.

“Fifty five per cent of executives will die from a stress-related illness, one in three will die from cancer, one in two from heart disease and one person every three minutes are diagnosed with diabetes. Fifty per cent of the UK workforce is overweight and 30% are obese, two per cent dehydration leads to 30 per cent concentration loss.” While acknowledging that illness will always happen, the company believes that much more can be done to head off problems. To that end, MHTLife.com concentrates on leaders acknowledging that change is required and individuals taking responsibility for their health by understanding the negative impact and how small changes can have an immediate positive impact on their wellbeing.

Many blue chip companies are already seeing the benefit of Wellness Coaching within their organisations and leveraging that increase in performance into very real business success, companies such as Toyota, Price Waterhouse Cooper and Apple.” Mark said that the benefits to the organisation include: n Increased productivity and reduced stress n Increased employee engagement and reduced absenteeism n Improved concentration and commitment to the organisation n Increased work satisfaction and higher staff morale Benefits for people who have worked with MHTLife.com have included: n Weight loss n Sharper mental activity n Higher productivity n Feeling healthier and having more energy n Feeling more positive n Looking healthier

There are plenty of things employers can do to encourage workers to be more healthy, with sessions provided either by private companies or the NHS. They include:

healTh checKs Cardio vascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death of working age people in the UK. CVD costs the economy £3.1 billion a year due to days lost to death, illness and the care of people with the disease. Health checks can screen for CVD risk and provide information about simple lifestyle changes to improve health and well-being.

FighTing weighT It’s all to easy to put on weight with a hectic modern life. By the time many of us reach middle age, we could do with losing a few pounds to get rid of the “middle age spread”. Obesity and problems with being overweight are estimated to cost the UK taxpayer £16 billion a year. By making simple swaps, you can lose weight without giving up the things you love. For example you can swap your high calorie coffee drinks like whole-milk lattes and frappe for drinks made with skimmed milk. And swap your high sugar or fat snacks biscuits and crisps for a healthier food like fruit. Poor nutrition can effect your energy levels, concentration and health and make it difficult to maintain a good weight. With almost two thirds of adults overweight or obese in England, it is important to ensure that you eat a range of food and cut down on foods high in salt, sugar and fat.

Keeping physically acTiVe Physical activity is good for your mind and body. Employees who are physically active take 27% less days off sick. You don’t have to join a gym or set up a rigid exercise programme. Walking and cycling are good low cost ways to increase your physical activity and can be fitted into you daily routine. Many companies encourage their staff to walk and cycle to work. At work you can swap the lift for the stairs and rather than eating at your desk get up and move about.

smOKing If you are a smoker, stopping is probably the single biggest thing you can do to improve your health. Smokers on average take 4.4 more days off in sickness absence than non smokers. Stopping smoking will improve your health and fitness, protect those close to you against the effects of passive smoking and save you a lot of money.

Excellence in Orthopaedic and Spinal Care working in association with the Droitwich Knee Clinic A Team of Leading, Highly Experienced Specialist Surgeons committed to delivering Exceptional Standards of Quality and Service to private patients

Specialists aiding joint recovery for employees Many businesses endure the cost of employee absence due to back or joint pain. This has a major negative impact on profitability, more severe for small and medium sized businesses where each individual is a key person. Ensuring that you and your staff are fit for work quickly following an episode of back or joint pain is paramount. By obtaining an early, accurate, expert diagnosis, treatment and recovery will be optimal. Whether suffering from injury, arthritis or worn out joints it is important to choose a specialist consultant with

specific expertise to quickly diagnose the problem and recommend a treatment plan. For private patients, the Joint Clinic has a team of 7 specialist orthopaedic consultants, a consultant spinal neurosurgeon and consultant anaesthetist. Outpatient appointments are held at The Hawthorns Consulting Rooms in Droitwich. At the Joint Clinic, you will be seen promptly. You will be treated using the most minimally invasive procedures with the highest quality support services available, to give you the best possible outcome.

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS RUNNING SMOOTHLY A well run business is one which plans for success. This entails knowing what it is that keeps your business on track. It might include sales, good customer service, quality control, and IT systems, and what about your people? How often do you consider how smoothly they are running? There is an aspect to health and well-being which often remains invisible until it is too late – mental health. In June 2011 The NHS Information Centre for Health and Social Care published ‘Attitudes to Mental Illness.’

026

BD03.indd 26

It reported that 43% of respondents would feel uncomfortable talking to their employer about their mental health; add to other research that has shown 1 in 4 British adults experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in any one year and it might make you want to work out the maths for your business. Amanda Wright, Wellness Works Business Adviser says: “3 in 10 people have sick-leave from work related to their mental health in any one year, so if you are a business that plans for success it is time to think more carefully about taking a proactive approach to maintaining mental health.” www.wellness-works.co.uk

DRIVING GROWTH THROUGH WASTE Ian Barber, Marketing Director of Envirecover explains why Mercia Waste Management’s proposed Energy-from-Waste plant will be a boost for the local economy. The essence and purpose of Mercia Waste Management’s Envirecover Energy-from-Waste facility, proposed for the major employment site of Hartlebury Trading Estate, is to recover value in terms of energy from the residual waste that cannot be sensibly recycled. When built, it will take 200,000 tonnes a year of residual waste and combust it to supply to the electricity grid, enough power to light up a town the size of Kidderminster. By combusting the residual waste and raising steam, Envirecover offers the potential to supply direct renewable energy in the form of steam, hot water

and even cooling (through adsorption chillers) to local business and industry. Combined Heat and Power, or CHP, is widely used across northern Europe. In the UK, with energy costs continuing to spiral, and with growing concerns over our ability to deliver secure indigenous renewable supplies, Envirecover is too good an opportunity to miss. Through its links with the local authorities and business organisations, Mercia Waste Management is working to market this unique opportunity to help attract new business investment to Worcestershire. In the short term, of course, the facility has yet to be built. Whilst the main elements of fixed plant are likely to come from overseas, there will be a great opportunity for local service and equipment suppliers to take advantage of the £140 million worth of investment coming into the area. Construction is scheduled to commence in late 2012.

OLD STANDARD PAIN ASSESSMENT

NP3 TECHNOLOGY AND BENEFITS

THE

THE

IN

OF ASSESSMENT

Clinicians have experienced difficulty assessing patients pain symptoms due to the complexity and subjectivity of the complaint. During an assessment, self reported pain questionnaires and physical examination often do not distinguish between the different domains of pain. Each clinician is forced to interpret the patient s responses relying predominantly on clinical training, bias, and personal experience. This ambiguity leads to diagnostic and treatment error with resulting poorer outcomes. How to assess pain is a major clinical issue which has been continually studied by several organizations, including the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the world’s largest scientific research organization for the study of pain. Studies have shown that MRI’s, and CT scans evaluate objective changes in anatomy, but these findings frequently do not correlate with the presence, absence, or degree of pain.

• Provides objective physiologic measurements of pain • Provides testing for myofascial, joint or neuropathic pain syndromes • Eliminates age, gender, social and cultural influences affecting pain complaints, as the patient serves as his or her own control • Detects emotional affective components (e.g. anxiety and depression) • Uncovers the presence of socio-dynamic factors • Non-invasive

The NeuroPhysiologic Pain Profile (NPS) is the first non-invasive comprehensive assessment tool to objectively evaluate pain symptoms. The causes of chronic pain are complex. Pain symptoms are a mixture of physical, emotional, soci-dynamic and descriptive elements.

The International

Association for the Study of Pain s medical Chronic pain conditions are among the most challenging and uncertain cases. It is becoming increasingly clear that diagnostic imaging is insufficient for determining the actual source of pain symptoms. Success rates for many aggressive pain interventions are increasingly coming under scrutiny and viewed as less than optimal. Patients whose pain conditions fail to resolve quickly have a sufficient likelihood of becoming trapped in a pattern of uncertain diagnosis, failed treatments and long-term suffering.

definition of pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. The NP3 assessment accurately analyzes these elements in patients with pain complaints.

THE NEW PAIN

ASSESSMENT

The Neurophysiologic Pain Profile [NP3] is a non-invasive assessment tool for the evaluation of painful symptoms, based on scientifically verifiable biological data related to the pain experience. The NP3 provides an objective assessment of a patient s pain symptoms. Given the challenges inherent with chronic non-malignant pain conditions, objective insight into the nature of a patient s pain condition becomes invaluable to help ensure patients are receiving proper treatments and avoiding ineffective treatments that may pose risks to their long-term health. The NP3 is an innovative assessment that combines state-of-the-art science and technology developed through research, clinical experience, and working with global leaders in biofeedback and medical devices. It has stood the test of critical review by professors at John Hopkins University, University of Louisville and the University of Miami. The International Modern Marvels, Invent Now Challenge sponsored by the History Channel and Time Magazine named the NP3 as one of the outstanding inventions worldwide in 2006.

and the reduction of unnecessary procedures and medications. The NP3 assessment is performed by trained NeuroPAS Global healthcare professionals. The NP3 assessment results are interpreted by a team of accredited neurologists. A final test report and results of the NP3 assessment are delivered to the healthcare provider within 48 hours. The benefits in the use of the NP3 s advanced neuro-medical technology in improving healthcare are clear. NP3 bridges the communication gap between patient and physician by illuminating to physicians exactly what factors contribute to their patient s pain experience, including the emotional and psycho-dynamic elements that may influence their pain symptoms. Most importantly, patients will receive accurate and individualized care

based on an objective NP3 assessment. This will improve patient recovery time, reduce medical expenses and the frustration of unresolved pain, resulting in a better quality of life.

DK BUSINESS SOLUTIONS – AN EASIER WAY OF RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS

When you make a purchase, have you ever stopped to consider what you are really buying? You are not only buying a product but rather the benefits it will bring you. A widely cited example of this is when you buy a drill you are not just buying a drill, you´re buying a hole in the wall! This is true for any purchase you make. When faced with the decision of whether or not you should invest in a software system, have you actually thought about it from this viewpoint? Generally speaking, when you are buying a software system such as the dk Business Solutions system, you are buying an easier way of running your business. A system should provide a platform for management to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the business. This happens in a variety of ways. With accurate stock records, companies are able to gauge into their stock holdings, stock value, pricing structure, margins etc. allowing them to run the business with more efficiency and accuracy. Managing the relationships with customers and vendors is another important aspect and allows senior management to identify their best, highest value customers, service them in a way where they are satisfied and by doing

so increase their effectiveness. Being efficient is important but being effective is even more important or as the saying goes; before you build a better mousetrap, it helps to know if there are any mice out there. The dk Business Solutions system has been developed based on the philosophy that it can increase both the efficiency and effectiveness of a business through various features. The system’s level of integration is exemplary, ranging from dk´s Point of Sale solution for retailers, restaurants and hotels, across finance, accounting, inventory, CRM, project billing, sales and purchasing to name but a few. By integrating and streamlining the activities and processes within the business it can create significant cost- and time savings throughout the company’s workflow while giving the management team a complete overview of operations through the system´s powerful reporting and analysis tools that are an integral part of every module. By getting the complete overview of operations the management team is more capable of spotting opportunities and threats in a timely manner as well as being able to make better informed decisions on a day-to-day basis.

Business Direction published by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce

As well as being able to save both time and money by using the dk Business Solutions system, a range of options have been designed by Black Diamond IT Ltd, an official reseller of the dk Business Solutions system in the UK, where the aim is to make implementation as easy as possible and to reduce the perceived risk of purchase. These options include up to 18 months interest free financing on the system purchase, the option to lease the system, as well as using the hosted version of dk Business Solutions via the dk Vistun hosting facilities allowing you to access the system from anywhere in the world over the internet. The dk Business Solutions system is currently being used by over 5,000 companies of various shapes and sizes across the UK and in Scandinavia. Having already established a strong user base in the Midlands area, Black Diamond aims to further enhance its reputation and make dk Business Solutions a brand that is recognised for the high value it brings its customers through the use of the system as well as the outstanding services provided before, during and after the system is implemented.

PROTECT YOUR COMPANY FROM FRAUD AND HELP THE ENVIRONMENT the Data Protection Act and unauthorised personnel having access to company data. • Company uniforms / stock with the company logo: These help fraudsters gain access to a company’s identity, and access to places and records that should be secure. If they look official, people are rarely questioned. We can deal with all these data issues as well as helping the Environment. We can supply our Confidential Security Sacks and large, Lockable Recycling Bins. Our unique bar-coded security system tracks the progress of your data/ computers/uniforms etc from collection to destruction. With our Supply and Collection facility, our sacks are tied with security tags after your papers and documents are inserted, or the bin is filled and locked by you. The next time they are opened, they will go straight into the industrial shredder and a certificate of destruction can be provided. All shredded materials are recycled and re-used. Did you know? Virgin paper can be recycled up to 6 times as office paper before it becomes so poor that it can only be used for tissue or toilet paper. Our sister company, ReSource Recycling, handles all forms of waste including cardboard, plastic, metal and clothing, and, after sorting and processing then all that waste is recycled too. Consider your data security and your other waste streams, much of it can be recycled with little effort on your part. This will allow your business to work smarter and greener by increasing the efficiency of your systems.

Did you realise that there are between 50-100 cases of Corporate Identity Fraud every month? This is either from fraudsters (customers, suppliers or staff) who steal goods, money or services by using a false identity or fraudsters who steal a company’s own identity, which can result in devastating credibility and financial consequences. The majority of these cases are from: • Online fraud (computer or mobile): As well as passing even secure data to unknown online contacts, disregarded, discarded and obsolete

receipt print-outs can be used by fraudsters. • Discarded computers with data on hard drives, CDs, Memory sticks etc. With today’s technology, many computer accessories can be deciphered. • Print-outs of personal and corporate data. “CONNECTION DAY” TO BEAT THE DROP IN FEED IN TARIFFS FOR SOLAR PV IS

On 1st August 2011, the government lowered the support for the top 99% of Solar PV in the UK but left the Feed in Tariff level for <50kWp untouched until 31st March 2012 at which point we expect the rate for arrays connected thereafter to drop by about 30%, over twice the previously scheduled reduction. Therefore, “Connection” or C Day is 31st March 2012 for anyone looking to lock into the current generous tariff rate for arrays of up to 50kWp. CONSERVATION AWARD FOR ‘ESCAPE TO THE COUNTRY’ OFFICES The team behind a unique office development is celebrating after the project clinched a prestigious award.

The Brockhampton Estate project, near Hereford, won the Building Conservation category in the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) West Midlands Awards 2011. The project was shortlisted against formidable opposition including The Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres transformation in Stratford-upon-Avon by Bennetts Associates Architects, The Gate House at Stokesay Castle by English Heritage, Derwent Foundary Birmingham by MCD Developments Ltd, Devonshire House Birmingham by PMP Consultants Ltd, and Goldfinger House Solihull by AJA Architects LLP. The development (formerly known as Ladyridge Farm) is constructed with environmental sustainability in mind.

Ground source heat pumps serve the under floor heating in all of the offices, rainwater is harvested to flush toilets and irrigate the landscaping, timber has been harvested from the estate and a lot of the stone, tiles and paving has been recycled from existing buildings. Unusually, as much thought has been spent on the outside of the offices and how they blend into the landscape as the inside. Robert Champion, partner at Worcestershire-based agents Halls Commercial said: “Whilst city centres and other areas of high population levels remain attractive to many businesses, there is the genuine justification for small, entrepreneurial businesses to locate in more rural

WHAT IS IN IT FOR EMPLOYERS THAT TAKE ON AN APPRENTICE? Hewett Recruitment are currently recruiting an apprentice to work with Louise Hewett’s Executive Assistant Jo Watkins.

Lucy Price from Bronte Porcelain with Commander Ackland and Commanding Officer Captain Jerry Kyd showing one of the limited edition plates Bronte produced, onboard HMS Ark Royal.

COMMEMORATING HMS ARK ROYAL Bronte Porcelain of Malvern with a very skilled workforce of Worcestershire artists and craftspeople have over the years since their formation in 1996 gained recognition as one of the most prestigious manufacturers of English bone china in the United Kingdom. Bronte have received many special commissions from Royalty and Heads of State. For corporate business Bronte are able to produce high quality pieces that will enhance the image of any company.

Late last year they were contacted by Commander Heber Ackland from HMS Ark Royal who wanted special commemorative pieces for the 25th Anniversary of Ark Royal which unfortunately coincided with the sad decommissioning of the ship. Bronte will be happy to discuss any corporate enquiries with companies requiring something special. www.bronte-porcelain.com

Louise Hewett, Managing Director of Hewett Recruitment explains why she thinks companies should take on apprentices and what is in it for them: “In addition to tackling the skill shortage, apprentices are beneficial for companies as they are trained to do a job to agreed standards designed around their talents and the needs of the businesses. They bring considerable value to employers in an increasingly competitive business environment. ‘Growing your own talent’ provides a stream of ‘fresh blood’ for your business to make sure the well of talent does not dry up, it also allows businesses to shape their workers and ensures they have the right skills in place for the future success of their business. There is hot competition for placements, so apprentices tend to be eager, motivated and loyal to the company that has invested in them. Jo Watkins, Louise’s Executive Assistant said: “We are looking forward to nurturing and developing our new apprentice – all we need is lots of enthusiasm to learn!” www.hewett-recruitment.co.uk www.hewettexecutivetalent.co.uk

MANUFACTURING PROFITABILITY: COMPLIMENTARY SEMINAR As the recession grinds on, profitability becomes ever more important with a strong emphasis on manufacturing to lead the recovery. Joining Geoff will be two keynote speakers, Mike Ashton, Chief Executive of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce and Simon Noakes – Operations Manager at Hozelock Ltd (winners of prestigious manufacturing awards). Mike will open the seminar with an insight into manufacturing in the region and Simon will examine Hozelock’s approach to customer service

ADVERTORIAL

REFLECTIONS OF A BUSINESS COACH It’s great to reflect back on the last 4 years and the real privilege it has been to work with more than 400 local businesses. From a construction company tripling turnover in 14 months, a manufacturer improving profitability by 75%, to a security firm owner now seeing more of his kids and re-joining the local brass band…while the business grows. We get a tremendous buzz when our clients achievements are recognised: Uniline, winners of the Queens award for Enterprise, Holywell Spring Water & Ninety Five Creative, recent winner and runner up, Most Promising New Businesses at the recent Chamber Business Awards; and Cathedral Belles, retailer of the year. We are also very proud of our own award for best client training results, chosen out of 1100 global coaches. I rate what I do as the best job on earth. Initially there is the fascination of discovering what a business looks like from the inside – it’s successes and failures, it’s hopes and disappointments. Next, we work with the business owner / leader providing the clarity to see what can be achieved through the use of proven systems and techniques, along with effective goal setting. Then, most importantly, we provide support and guidance as confidence builds, people develop and the results improve, this is the most satisfying aspect of all. We have met some great people and had a tremendous amount of fun over the last few years. We have taken clients to Villas in Spain and a Manor House in North Wales for ‘planning days’; taken over

the French restaurant at the Chateau Impney and Browns, Worcester; for Christmas celebrations. We’ve experienced off road driving, attended many sports events, climbed the 3 Peaks and cycled between each and undertaken several other charitable activities.

firm of solicitors and a number of customer focused accountants. This now also incorporates Internet, Marketing, CRM and HR Service Providers, along with our excellent relationship with the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce.

Coaching can be a great investment whether you’re a one person or a multinational business. You simply need to have the desire to take your organisation to the next level of success and the acceptance that there are areas in any business which can be improved.

Indeed, the Chamber shares our desire to help businesses across Herefordshire and Worcestershire achieve that next level of success. So we are delighted to be working with the Chamber on the Powered Growth Programme, chairing the sessions and presenting on various of the subject areas.

To give an idea of the approach we take, here are a few of the maxims we adopt when working alongside our clients: • Stop selling products and services, start selling the results. • Growth happens when you invest time working ON not just IN the business. • Make decisions based on return on investment, not minimising costs. • Inspire the team through empowerment, cash won’t achieve this.

SPELLER METCALFE RECEIVES RECOGNITION FOR CONSTRUCTION WORK AND SUPPORT FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES Speller Metcalfe have enjoyed a successful year to date, receiving several local, as well as national awards for which the firm has been recognised not only for the quality of their contract construction work but also for providing significant support to the surrounding communities. Speller Metcalfe scooped the Development Team Award at this year’s inaugural South Worcestershire Building Excellence Awards ceremony held in Worcester in recognition of their outstanding work undertaken at Malvern College which had been extensively damaged by fire. The team were praised for completing the work in challenging circumstances and equally for the minimal impact caused during the restoration to the College’s day to day activities. Organised by the National Considerate Constructors Scheme, Speller Metcalfe were also presented with the Silver Award for most Considerate Contractor of 2010 for a major contract at the Longhouse Day Care Centre in Stroud, as well as a further prize at the LABC Best Community Building Awards for the construction of the new Armadillo Community Centre project in Yate, near Bristol, a design specifically for schemes benefitting the local community. Speller Metcalfe were also delighted to be acknowledged by the South West Built Environment Awards for their work under the Gloucestershire County Council Framework on the Heart of the Forest

Steve Wood, Sanctuary Group Director – Care and Support said: “The award is a fitting tribute to the skill and dedication of the staff at these two homes. It also reflects our commitment to providing the highest possible standards of dementia care to our residents.” www.sanctuary-housing.co.uk

OWNER MANAGED BUSINESSES MAY BE TURNING A CORNER ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH Optimism among owner managed businesses in the West Midlands has increased with 51%* of regional respondents to Baker Tilly’s Owner Managed Business survey revealing positive sentiments about their business, compared to 42% in 2010. Kate Reid, OMP for Baker Tilly in Hereford explains: “Whilst there is more corporate confidence there is also uncertainty and economic recovery remains fragile. OMBs should not fall into a false sense of security; but maintain cost control, keep a close eye on cash and ensure efficient working practices are in place.” Taking business from failing competitors is a primary opportunity according to 27% of respondents with growth in new technology and lowering costs also ranking highly (both 23%). However downturn in demand is still the biggest threat with 41% of respondents indicating that it is a major threat in

BD03.indd 47

The awards each came with a grant from Worcestershire County Council of £7,500 which will be used to further develop the dementia care provision at the homes. Plans include the creation of sensory room with farmhouse dining experience, transforming one of the lounges into a pub, and a sensory garden.

the region. Other threats include public sector cuts (36%), rising fuel costs and increased inflation on goods and services (both 32%). Overall, perceived threats seem to have decreased, particularly access to credit which is significantly less of a threat to business with only 5% of West Midlands’ respondents indicating it as a major issue. However, is this because banks are ‘back in business’ or are fewer businesses looking for credit and now operating within their means, or are they changing their budgets to allow for funds for development? “For many businesses, organic growth is going to be hard to come by. Those businesses that are fortunate to be sitting on cash balances may decide to deliver growth via acquisition and investment.” www.bakertilly.co.uk *Small Sample YouGov collected the data from 276 owners and senior executives of private businesses across the country in the spring of 2011.

Business News SUPPORTING EDUCATION FOR THE CHILDREN

WHCA CELEBRATES 90 YEARS OF HEALTH CARE SUPPORT

Network4Charity held a superb evening at Worcester Warriors Rugby Club on the 29 July in support of Education for the Children. The evening was host to a number of successful local businesses providing them with a great opportunity to mix business with pleasure, including a three course meal with live music and all for a fantastic cause.

To celebrate 90 years of healthcare support in Worcestershire, WHCA has been donating free cash plans worth £550, to support charities such as St Richards Hospice and are looking to donate to other charities.

There were two main sponsors for the night, Lee Clarke from ClarkeWood Consulting a Specialist IT Recruiter who sponsored two tables and Lynn Taylor from SPD Print a Silk Screen Printer sponsored the champagne reception.

WHCA cash plans are an easy way to get support to meet the costs of every day healthcare. The WHCA has been helping local people and businesses since 1921.

Network4Charity raised a great total of £2800 on the night itself all of which has gone directly to Education for the Children and will significantly make a difference to the children of Guatemala whose lives have been touched by the charity.

RAISING FUNDS FOR THE PRINCE’S TRUST The Herefordshire and Worcestershire Development Committee for The Prince’s Trust, chaired by Viv Hudson of Hotelshop UK have three exciting events coming up to raise funds to support local disadvantaged young people.

Kevin Churchill, Business Development Manager, said: “We really believe in the added value and benefits that this type of plan can provide to business and individuals, and although we have been here for 90 years we are still a growing business.”

On Thursday 15 September, they will hold their first clay pigeon shoot at Hereford and Worcester Shooting Ground. The event provides a great opportunity for alternative corporate entertaining or team building for your organisation.

Designed to give peace of mind and to help individuals return to work as quickly as possible, cash plans assist companies and individuals to pay for regular healthcare such as the Dentist or Optician and other treatments such as Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Health Screening

INTERNATIONAl TRADE: HEAlTH AND WEllbEING The International Trade team at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce have recently been designated as the UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) lead on export support for Health and Wellbeing businesses for the West Midlands region.

EXPORT TRAINING COURSES Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Awareness Thursday 6th October (Half day) Severn House, Prescott Drive, Warndon Business Park, Worcester, WR4 9NE £95 Members, £100 Non members

The industries included in this sector are: n Medical Technology n Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals n Food and Drink n Clothing, Footwear and Fashion n Giftware, Jewelry and Tableware n Leisure and Tourism n Textiles, Interior Textiles and Carpets The Health and Wellbeing sector will be led by Shernel Stevenson who will be based at the Chamber of Commerce. Shernel has been working with the International trade team for almost 3 years and been working with companies throughout the region to develop their international business and to gain access into new markets. For those companies covered under this sector and who would like to access new overseas markets receive the list of sector activities or have a general discussion on what support is available to them contact Shernel Stevensonon 0845 641 1642 shernels@hwchamber.co.uk

In addition to the funding we offer, we also provide a high level of export training courses to those companies that want to learn or improve their skills in this area. The range of courses is wide and suits the needs of any exporter! So would you be interested in increasing your sales on line, in managing your agents and distributors more efficiently and effectively or in using adequate financial controls that help your company avoid risks and financial implications? These and more questions may be answered by attending some of the training courses we have available. This time we’re encouraging companies to learn and understand the importance of getting the AEO accreditation which helps international traders to maintain fast and reliable delivery times in international markets. The WCO (World Customs Organisation) has been urging all its 178 member countries to put in place an ‘accreditation scheme’ to allow customs authorities to identify the ‘legitimate’ traders internationally from the ones that will require further surveillance. The aim of this accreditation is to reduce the paperwork burden of international trade, increase

SUCCESSFUL NEW LETTINGS AT LINK BUSINESS CENTRE Phase 4, the latest development at Link Business Centre in Malvern has recently been completed. The new development, consisting of seven high specification, energy efficient industrial units with high insulation values, are quickly being filled. 6 out of the 7 units have been taken by existing tenants; 2 are already occupied, 4 have terms agreed – all within 1 month of building work having been completed. Proving that the Centre is an ideal environment to ensure efficiency and productivity for local businesses, and has plenty of satisfied customers

Transformation of Health and Social Care in Herefordshire – a first for the UK Groundbreaking changes have taken place in Herefordshire over the last year with the integration of health and adult social care services, through the creation of Wye Valley NHS Trust from 1st April 2011. Wye Valley NHS Trust is the first organisation in the UK to have done this and is confident that using the existing excellent social and community care in Herefordshire to a greater effect will place less pressure on acute hospital services and bring care closer to patients. Herefordshire health and social care organisations needed to find new ways of working to provide high quality, safe and sustainable services and solutions AND which reflect the community across the whole of Herefordshire.

www.linkbusinesscentre.co.uk

Through a range of services including; Washroom, Medical/Clinical Waste collection services, they offer recycling solutions for just about any product from nappies and incontinent waste (which are made into roofing tiles, egg boxes and shoe insoles!) to surgical dressings.

The new services concentrate on identifying vulnerable patients or service users in the community before a need for urgent care arises. The focus will be on predicting and preventing illness early on, and promoting more personal health and wellbeing.

www.wyevalley.nhs.uk

Mid West Automation is one such success story. The completion of the new units came at the perfect time, allowing MWA to expand without having to incur the costs of moving their machinery. The increased space will be ideal in allowing them to grow their manufacturing services, and they have also been able to add to the team, consisting as it now does of a staff of five full-time employees and one part-time employee.

SAFER OPTIONS & GREENER OPTIONS

It has been a unique and challenging year working closely with the local community and stakeholders to bring these services together.

Where appropriate, care is being delivered through joined-up local neighbourhood teams. This means multidisciplinary teams of therapists, nurses, social workers, along with GPs and practice staff, communicating and working together in ways we have not seen before.

who are trading successfully and are ready to expand.

Christine Bond, Managing Director of Safer Options and Greener Options

Safer Options & Greener Options have been established for 5 years and are based in Hartlebury. The company ethos is ‘Put something back’ and they do that on a daily basis.

Lots of the services such as printer cartridges, stamps, cans, corks and mobile phone collections are free to customers and help with fund raising projects. Many of the products are sent to third world counties to help the poor and disadvantaged. Managing Director, Christine Bond says: “I am described by my staff as a ‘Womble’ and I think, if the shoe fits…….(And if it doesn’t, recycle it!). If we can’t recycle it for you, we know a man or woman who can!” www.greeneroptions.co.uk

NEW CAR PARK ACCOMMODATES EXPANSION AT OPEN GI Leading Technology Company, Open GI, has completed work on a new company car park to add 71 new spaces to cater for the ever expanding workforce. Open GI has been located in Warndon for the last 23 years, during which time the staff total has increased four-fold from just 75 to over 350 employees. Councillor Simon Geraghty, Leader of the City Council, Worcester, said:

“This is a great example of how local government can work with the private sector to solve problems facing businesses. This new development will enable Open GI’s workforce to comfortably expand to facilitate more technical employment opportunities in Worcester, whilst easing parking congestion with neighbouring businesses.”

WHEN PIP MET FERAL Two Hereford companies with a strong ethos for environmental issues are getting together to build a better future for the local community. Megan Barker, Joint Artistic Director with Feral Productions comments:“We are delighted to partner with a local company who share our interest in further developing a vibrant cultural landscape without compromising the environment in the process. Last Word

1. WHY IS EXPORTING IMPORTANT TO THE UK ECONOMY? At a time of dramatically reduced public spending, constrained credit and reduced consumer spending in our home market increasing exports is key to economic recovery. 2. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR COMPANIES TO CONSIDER EXPORTING? the company skills and provides clients with a higher quality, best value service. www.video-interactive.co.uk

At a time when the home market for many companies is stagnant or declining exporting offers the chance to diversify your markets and improve your bottom line. 3. WHAT COUNTRIES DO BRITISH COMPANIES EXPORT TO?

MODUS APPOINTS NEW ONLINE MANAGER

The bulk of British Exports still go to the USA and ‘old’ Europe. However British companies actually export all over the world and trade is growing fast with markets like India, China, Brazil and other emerging markets.

Modus Creative design and marketing company based in Foregate Street, has announced the launch of its new online business and the appointment of Jim Kelly as its new online manager. Jim, who is responsible for all Modus’ online activity, joined Modus Online Limited in March and brings with him over 10 years’ experience programming with PHP, CSS and HTML, e-commerce and search engine optimisation. He is also using his knowledge of Drupal and Joomla with Modus’ clients. Jim is joined by graduate web developer Wojciech Batyra. Modus Online is working extensively in the education sector developing financial apps for smart phones, as well

4. WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE AN EXPORTING COMPANY? Do your homework and plan exporting as an integral part of your business. You need to understand how exporting will effect your business and to understand the market you are entering. There is plenty of experience/advice out there that you can access. Of course UKTI can help, that is what we are here for, but there is plenty of information on line and Banks, international lawyers etc will also be happy to help. 5. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY OF LOCATING POTENTIAL DISTRIBUTORS IN MARKET? as other sector specific apps for iphone, blackberry and android apps – an area which Jim is now using his expertise to help further develop. www.moduscreative.co.uk

I would advise talking to an International Trade Adviser (ITA) from the UKTI team in the Chamber. Firstly using a distributor may or may not be the best route to market for your product/service. If it is the ITA be able to work with you to get our Embassy/Consulate/High Commission in the appropriate country to help you identify the right partner. If it isn’t the right route, they will be able to advise you on other options. 6. SHOULD A START UP COMPANY CONSIDER EXPORTING?

TO THE PEOPLE AT THE HEART OF YOUR BUSINESS

It depends on the product/service you supply. Some companies are certainly ‘born global’, particularly in sectors like ICT, Digital/New Media etc. Others will need a track record of established production before they should really consider it.

FROM THE PEOPLE WITH YOUR BUSINESS AT HEART

Yes. SMEs new to exporting can receive assistance from UKTIs Passport to Export scheme and funds can also be made available to help in visits to markets, attending trade shows etc. However, we find that most companies find access to expert advice and access to business opportunities more valuable than the actual subsidy. Get in touch with an ITA and they will be able to work with you on an appropriate package of support.
