Award for accountancy firm An Altrincham accountancy firm won a national award voted for by finance directors and key financial decision makers in SME companies. Haines Watts, which has a local office in Altrincham, has been named Auditor of the Year in the SME category at the annual FDs Excellence Awards. The awards celebrate the work of FDs and their service providers who contribute to the success of British business and sustainable growth. They were hosted by Real Business and held in association with the ICAEW, supported by the CBI.

“Our core client base is owner-managed businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises and so to get this endorsement means a great deal to us. We are proud of all of our staff who do an outstanding job for our clients day to day and who have contributed towards us winning this award.”

The respondents were asked to rate their auditor on service, value for money, ability to flag up risks and quality of audit partners.

Botox ruling welcomed by doctor Hale-based doctor Sarah Norman has spoken out after concerns were raised by the BBC over the ‘remote prescribing’ of Botox.

CheshireVoice

CV 01.indd 4

More than 100 guests attended the all-day celebration and were treated to a themed garden party with food, drink and live entertainment.

“Our aim is now to expand the shop’s gift section. Following the success of our new greetings card range and as weddings are a large part of our business, we are developing a new wedding area, displaying sample bouquets and table centre pieces..

A BBC investigation exposed the practice, including a London-based doctor who was shown to have built up a network of hundreds of nurses who would phone him from all over the UK to receive authorisation to inject patients. If a nurse was unable to contact him, he encouraged them to inject the patient and he would then contact them later. It is this practice that the GMC has decided to ban.

4

Over the past ten years, they have taken the business to new heights, with a new brand identity, an e-commerce website and a loyalty scheme which now has more than 1,500 customers.

Sarah said: “Like many businesses, we are fighting against the odds, but our focus is firmly on delivering a first class customer service and quality product. We’ve worked hard and we’re extremely proud to hit this milestone.

Dr Norman, who has a clinic in Altrincham called BrightNewMe, where she offers non-surgical cosmetic procedures including Botox, welcomed the news that ‘remote prescribing’ is to be banned by the General Medical Council (GMC).

Dr Norman said: “It concerns me that the aesthetics industry remains unregulated, and poorly administered treatments can lead to the so-called ‘frozen look’ and/or obvious signs of treatment. In my opinion, the use of Botox and other injectables should be regarded as a medical procedure, and they should only be administered by an individual qualified to do so, with a thorough understanding of facial anatomy.

Florist celebrates success with anniversary party Barkers The Florist, on Thorley Lane in Timperley, invited staff, friends, customers and suppliers to a party marking the tenth anniversary of owners David Kirkman and Sarah Berrington taking over the business.

John Whittick, Partner at Haines Watts’ Altrincham office, said: “It’s this type of award that matters to us because it’s voted for by real business people not some academic panel of experts.

Niall Dickson, chief executive of the GMC, said: “There are good reasons why these are prescription-only medicines and we believe doctors should assess any patient in person before issuing a prescription of this kind.”

The celebrations

“Altrincham, Timperley and Hale are fantastic places to do business and we’re looking forward to our next decade here. We would like to thank all our customers for their support over the past ten years, as their loyalty is what really makes us a success.” Dr Sarah Norman

More information is available at www.barkerstheflorist.com

“This move by the GMC, which will make it far more difficult for non-medical individuals to acquire Botox, is a considerable step forward in terms of ensuring patient safety and I welcome the news”

Failure to consult employees costs Thomas Cook group £500,000 Neil Myerson LLP has successfully represented 44 individuals in a group action in the Employment Tribunal against the Thomas Cook group of companies. The action arose out of the collapse of software development company Bluesky Travel Systems Limited and the transfer of its business activities to the Thomas Cook group. Each of the 44 claimants has been awarded the maximum award of 90 days’ gross pay in relation to the failure to inform and consult with employees about the effects of the transfer of activities. The failure was contrary to the requirements of the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations 2006.

The total value of the award to the claimants is in the region of £500,000. Joanne Henderson, Senior Solicitor, who represents the claimants, said “These complex proceedings were first issued in 2009 and so it is very satisfying to have overcome a number of legal hurdles and finally achieve this great result and a significant monetary award for the claimants.” The claimants’ other claims including for unfair dismissal will be heard later in the year and are valued in the region of a further £2,000,000. The result follows a recent trend where Employment Tribunals have been willing to award significant sums of money to claimants where there has been a failure to comply with obligations to inform and consult employees. Joanne Henderson

Growing fame for Susan Altrincham hypnotherapist and counsellor Susan Leigh has been receiving acknowledgment for her work at home and abroad. One of her articles, entitled Forgiveness, How Important is it as the end goal?, was requested for inclusion in a magazine to be distributed at the Connecticut Women’s Expo in the United States. She also received a request from South Africa asking for 86 copies of her book Dealing with Death - Coping with the pain to go into libraries to help teachers with their students. Susan also guested on Radio 5Live, on the station’s sleep clinic programme, which starts at midnight.

Chamber members victorious in golf tournament Altrincham & Sale Chamber of Commerce members were victorious against their opponents from Trafford Metrpolitan Borough Council in the 72nd Municipal Golf Civic Cup match at Altrincham Golf Course. Except for the war years 1940-1945, the two opponents have played the same tournament every year since 1935. This year was something of a landslide win, with Chamber members winning four out of five games.

Susan Leigh

Team Captain Chris Partington of Slater Heelis LLP, a Chamber member law practice, is pictured here holding the cup, which was presented to the winning Chamber team by Councillor Dylan Butt, the Deputy Mayor of Trafford. Chris said: “This tournament has been bringing local businesses and the council together since 1935 and we’re proud to continue this great tradition, especially when we can manage such a resounding victory! We’re all looking forward to the re-match next year.”

The Chamber recognises some great achievers This year, the Altrincham & Sale Chamber of Commerce Endeavour awards were sponsored by Carole Nash OBE, DL. More than 40 schools within Trafford were invited to recognize pupils within their schools for achievements outside those for which school prizes are normally given. Junior Award Maddi Lingard Aged 11 years Bowdon Church School Maddi has Downs Syndrome and was more recently diagnosed with diabetes followed by Celiac disease. Coping for this would be stressful for any child but Maddi takes it all in her stride, continuing to participate in everyday school activities. Maddi is a ray of sunshine.

Carole Nash OBE, DL.

The Chamber looks for young people who have persevered with their schooling sometimes against severe difficulties, illness or simply inspirational circumstances. President of the Chamber Tony Collier said: “Every one of the nominations deserved to be recognised and we thank all those schools that have got involved. Hearing the stories of how much some of these young people have endured yet still remained positive is so very moving and an inspiration to us all.” Carole said, “I first sponsored these awards in 1999 and it gives me tremendous pleasure to once again be involved. Reading the nominations, I was so moved by the terrific achievement of these young people and the challenges that they have faced. I consider it a privilege to be involved.”

The winners were: Special Award Lucy Hunter Aged 12 years Loreto Grammar School Lucy is in remission having undergone brain surgery. She is a remarkable young lady who remains incredibly positive despite periods of continued absence.

Infant Award Evie Vick Aged 5 years Oldfield Brow Having joined the school on a part-time basis in nursery, it appeared unlikely that due to a congenial heart condition, Evie would ever be able to progress to full time schooling. Evie has proved everybody wrong and despite numerous operations keeps smiling.

Special Needs Award Gareth Howells Aged 18 years Brentwood School Gareth joined Brentwood in year 9. He has learning difficulties and is a wheelchair user but this has never let this stop him contributing to his community. He attends Lostock Youth Club as a support worker and has raised hundreds of pounds for charities by setting himself incredible challenges.

Senior Award Jordanna Bartlett Aged 17 years Altrincham College of Arts Up until suffering an injury earlier in her life, Jordanna was an able-bodied participant who enjoyed sport. However, the extent of her injury resulted in a series of operations and long-term intermittent use of a wheelchair. Despite her disability, Jordanna remained a superb sportswoman and is now a member of the Great Britain U25’s wheelchair Basketball Squad.

“Every one of the nominations deserved to be recognised and we thank all those schools that have got involved. Hearing the stories of how much some of these young people have endured yet still remained positive is so very moving and an inspiration to us all.”

Support is the theme at Mixer Members attending the May ‘Mixer’ at Altrincham’s Cresta Court Hotel were treated to presentations on stress and how to ease the pressures connected to finance management. Counsellor and hypnotherapist Susan Leigh of Lifestyle Therapy said that the 350 symptoms of stress range from sleeping difficulties to irritability and lack of libido. With 25 years’ experience of helping people, Susan’s business is all about assisting people to live a better quality life, whether by stress management or relationship counselling. She said: “We cope in different ways with different areas of our lives and if they are out of balance people find the ability to cope becomes overwhelming.” The result can also show itself in low self esteem, lack of confidence, panic attacks, phobias, eating disorders and matrimonial problems but Susan helps people to manage stress better, react more appropriately in everyday situations, think differently and remain in control. Another presentation was from Sue Weighell, whose business Delta Solutions offers professional support to organisations that need a finance professional but are not in a position to employ someone on a full-time basis. That’s where Sue Weighell’s background as both a finance and managing director comes in. The former financial director for a group of companies with a £4m turnover now provides that experience not only for start-ups and growing businesses but those that are established, expanding or even declining. Sue’s strong IT background and postgraduate diploma in Business Information Technology is part of being a ‘virtual’ or ‘part-time’ finance director who addresses specific issues, identifies solutions and introduces up-to-date modern practices. Chamber president Tony Collier told Mixer guests in his address: “This is an interesting time for Altrincham. There’s a lot of good going on in the town, we are moving slowly in the right direction and the Chamber has been very robust to continue promoting our members’ businesses. “There are developments in the pipeline and the Chamber is working with the new Altrincham Forward group to accelerate that process.”

NETWORKINGEVENTS CHESHIREVOICE

The Sun shines on the Bowdon Business BBQ It was one of those rare evenings during this summer. The sky was blue, the sun was shining and businesses gathered at Bowdon Cricket, Hockey & Squash Club on South Downs Road to enjoy relaxed networking opportunities. The Altrincham & Sale Chamber of Commerce attracted about 30 businesses to exhibit at the marquee event and numerous visitors. Exhibitors included representatives from a range of professional services, hotel groups, ladies’ fashion, photography and a local radio station. Guests took advantage of the facilities at the sports club, enjoying the BBQ and refreshments. President of the Chamber, Tony Collier, managing partner of Milner Boardman Chartered Accountants & Business Advisors, said: “What

a wonderful evening, the sun was shining and the whole event had a real ‘buzz’ about it. Undoubtedly, the Chamber plays an integral part in bringing businesses together within the local community. “We provide a range of different events for the members that really make a difference to a company’s profile. I would urge local businesses that are not already involved in the Chamber to take a look at all that it offers to you and your business.“

It’s a fair deal 60Seconds Rotarians raise money for chamber charity Sale Rotarians are gambling on a James Bond-style casino event to raise money for Stockdales – a chamber member and one of the area’s longest established charities. Their ‘Casino Royale’ event on 17 November at the Britannia County House Hotel, Didsbury, will hand over an expected four-figure sum for Stockdales which supports children and adults with learning and physical disabilities and complex health needs. “Stockdales has had a long and caring history for more than 50 years in Sale and we want to help them with the biggest donation we can achieve,” says the club president James Eisen. ‘Casino Royale’ will use ‘fun money’ stakes to play at three blackjack, roulette and poker tables run by professional croupiers. The evening will also feature a vocalist, drinks reception and buffet. And a charity auction of star items will close the evening in aid of the club’s benevolent fund which supports other Sale charities and causes. “We would love to hear from any chamber member,” added James, “who is prepared to sponsor all or part of the event, to donate a prestige auction item or simply buy tickets and join us on the night. Autumn Lunch “Things have changed … and they’re not going back” Seven years ago, a 19-year old computer whizzkid downloaded some free software from the Internet and started blogging from his bedroom in Aberdeen. Within 18 months, Pete Cashmore had a million readers. Now his ‘Mashable’ site is read by more than 25 million and this year CNN was rumoured to be offering various sums from $200 to $400 million to buy it. Social media is big business and setting up one of the biggest blogs in the world made Pete Cashmore one of the richest young men in Britain … before he moved to Florida. “It’s the way the world is going,” Nathan Smith told the chamber’s autumn lunch sponsored by trade mark attorney Sally Cooper and hosted by the Mercure Bowdon Hotel. ”Things have really changed - and they’re not going back,” said Nathan, managing director of Hale-based Smith & Smith PR, the award-winning PR brain behind the analogue/digital broadcasting switchover – said to be the largest public sector awareness campaign since decimalisation.

But it shouldn’t be used in isolation. “Social media will support networking and proper meaningful relationships,” Nathan added, “but it doesn’t replace them.”

The increasingly familiar international speaker on social media believes that sites from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Wikipedia to smaller social media vehicles like Pinterest and Instagram are having “a prolific affect on democracy around the world.” He argued: “Whether we like it or not it’s driving our politics and our businesses. Most companies struggle to get their heads around it but those that do are punching above their weight in an exciting world.” But first, a business needs to decide its objective. Whether it’s classic marketing, recruitment, customer service or business development, social media can open up dialogue with customers and clients, generate leads and help position a company as an industry leader.

Ask the expert...

Emma Nawaz Solicitor/Director Blackstone Solicitors Tel: 0161 929 0121 Mobile: 07814 747 242

How do I avoid court proceedings? Court proceedings can be lengthy and expensive and sometimes another route to resolution maybe more appropriate. Other routes which you may wish to consider are: 1

‘round table meeting’ – This is a meeting at which you and your solicitor will meet the opponent and their solicitor to see if an agreement can be reached. You should make sure that such a meeting is held on a “without prejudice basis” so that you feel comfortable to speak freely without being held to any compromise you may offer in the interest of a swift and amicable settlement. This is a good option if you wish to maintain a good relationship with the opponent and if this matter can be resolved amicably it may be possible for you to continue to work with the customer in the future. It is a good way of resolving disputes without burning bridges.

2

Mediation – you and the opponent jointly appoint an independent person, often a lawyer but it doesn’t have to be, to hear both sides of the argument and facilitate a discussion between you and your opponent with the aim of reaching a settlement; this usually means that you both compromise on certain elements of the dispute in the interest of reaching a commercial settlement.

How do I assess the cost of litigation? The cost of litigation can be expensive, and is especially unwelcome when you find yourself paying solicitors fees when you are already out of pocket because someone owes you money. If you are in this position, there are a number of options that would certainly be worth investigating: 1

Check your home insurance policy and any other insurance policy that you may have as there is usually legal expenses cover within your existing policy.

2

Obtain After the Event Insurance; you can often defer payment of the premium until the end of the case and depending on the cover you request it can cover your own legal costs and in the event that you lose will cover the legal costs of your opponent.

3

Arbitration – this is the joint appointment of an independent expert to determine a dispute. You would usually jointly pay the arbitrator’s fees. The arbitrator often provides their decision fairly swiftly and so this can be a fast route to obtaining an independent decision.

3

Ask your solicitor whether they will be able to represent you on a “no win no fee basis”. This means that your solicitor does not get paid unless you win and if you do win then the opponent pays your legal costs.

4

Ombudsman – Many professional bodies have an ombudsman which you can report complaints to free of charge and the ombudsman will investigate the dispute and provide their decision.

4

If you are on the receiving end of a claim and you consider that the company pursuing you may not be able to pay your legal costs in the event that you succeed in defending their claim then you should consider applying for Security of Costs. This is an Application that you make to the Court asking that the opponent company pays into the Court Funds Office a sum of money to be held by the court. If at trial the opponent is ordered to pay your legal costs the payment of your legal costs will be made from the money held in the Court Funds Office. The best part of this Application is that if the opponent does not comply with a Court Order to pay money into court then their case will be struck out.

5

Sometimes you know from the outset that Alternative Dispute Resolution is not suitable and it can turn out more effective to simply give notice that you intend to issue court proceedings and to do so at the earliest opportunity.

There are often many options available to you when you find yourself embroiled in litigation and we would recommend that you discuss your situation with an experienced litigation solicitor. For a free no obligation discussion about your issues, please call Emma Nawaz of Blackstone Solicitors on 0161 929 0121 or email emma@ blackstonesolicitorsltd.co.uk

BIGINTERVIEW

In this edition’s Big Interview we speak to Carl Newton, Managing Partner of Altrincham-based commercial law firm, Neil Myerson LLP Carl studied Law at Lancaster University and the College of Law, Chester. He qualified as a solicitor in 1995 at Addleshaw Goddard in Manchester. Upon qualification, he joined Neil Myerson as a corporate and commercial lawyer and he was made a Partner on 1 January 1999. He was Head of the Corporate Commercial Department for five years from 2000 and became the Managing Partner of the firm in 2005. What is your view of the sector in which you work in terms of its economic health? The legal sector, like many other service sectors, has been hit hard in the recession. Whilst my firm managed to weather the recession without making a single redundancy, many other law firms made considerable redundancies and, indeed, there are some large and small firms that have even gone out of business or had to merge. Many firms still face uncertain futures as the number of property and corporate transactions in the economy as a whole is still much reduced. Further, the legal profession for the first time in its history is now subject to more competition than ever with the introduction of alternative business structures allowing non-solicitors to invest or take interests in legal service businesses. How has your business survived the recession? What were the strengths that allowed it do that? Our firm has come out of the recession stronger than it went into the recession. Whilst, like everybody else, 2008-2009 was not a great year, we were careful not to make rash short-term decisions and all the decisions we made were with a view to achieving our medium to long-term goals. The strength that allowed us to survive the recession was the quality of our client base and our solicitors. Very few of our clients were casualties of the recession and throughout the recession they continued to provide repeated instructions to us. We gained new clients who previously used more expensive larger city centre firms and clients who previously used smaller high street firms that either ceased to carry on business or did not have the requisite range of expertise to service their client needs. Unlike some of the city centre firms, we have also continued to provide a complete service to

20

CV 01.indd 20

As well as offering traditional family law advice, Jane is a collaborative lawyer and a family mediator.

The legal sector, like many other service sectors, has been hit hard in the recession. our commercial clients by providing a joined-up service that caters for both their private legal needs as well as their commercial legal needs. What are the main challenges facing you and your company? The main challenge at the moment is managing the growth of our practice. In the past year we have increased our partnership from six to eight Partners. Jeremy Lee is a well-known local commercial property lawyer who joined us this year as a Partner with his assistant James Robinson from Altrincham firm, Myers Lister Price. We also appointed Amanda Freeman as the Head of our Private Client Department on 1 September 2012. Amanda joined us from another local firm, Haworth Holt Bell, 18 months ago. Also, this September, we started to provide legal advice on family matters after we recruited Jane Tenquist as a specialist family lawyer from TQ Solicitors.

In addition, to these new faces, we have also recruited four new solicitors and new support staff. We are also looking to recruit additional commercial property and corporate/commercial solicitors in the next six months. What hopes do you have for 2013 - where does the business want to be at the end of the year? Many of our commercial clients have exciting plans to create wealth and jobs and we are very much looking forward to playing our part in helping them develop their businesses. We aim to continue to expand our market share of the legal market for commercial work in South Manchester/Cheshire during 2013 and also considerably expand the private client base of the firm. We intend to be more vocal than perhaps we have been in the past in explaining to the local business community that we provide quality legal services that meet their private needs as well as their business needs.

About Neil Myerson LLP Neil Myerson LLP was founded by Neil Myerson in 1982 to provide a city-centre standard commercial law practice in a more pleasant, relaxed and amenable environment. As well as our home grown talent, many of the solicitors and partners at the firm previously trained and worked at large Manchester city centre or national law firms, and bring with them high standards of professionalism and a wealth of expertise. It supports the business community of South Manchester and Cheshire, as well as clients across the UK and beyond, dealing with their business and personal legal affairs. Until this summer, Neil was a Partner of the firm and is now a consultant of the firm.

New drug-free treatment for male erection problems

Spire Manchester Hospital is now offering a new non-surgical therapy which early research suggests can improve erection quality in three out of four men with reduced penile blood flow (vasculogenic ED) or diabetes.

Prospects for some patients with more severe ED are also promising. Another study2 showed that 70% of men who had previously not responded to medication started to do so after ED1000 treatment. This allowed them to resume active sex lives without the aid of invasive therapies, such as vacuum pumps, penile injections or implants.

The treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED) has greatly improved during the past decade, notably through the use of medication. The disadvantage of medication, apart from its side effects, is that it merely treats the symptom of a poor erection rather than dealing with the underlying cause.

Research to date suggests that the best candidates for ED1000 treatment are those diagnosed with vasculogenic ED or diabetes. Patients with vasculogenic ED may already have a history of vascular disease risk factors including a previous heart attack or stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking.

The new non-invasive treatment known as ED1000 approaches the problem in a completely different way. The therapy aims to improve natural blood flow in the penis, so that patients can once again achieve spontaneous erections dependable enough for intercourse without having to ‘pre-prepare’ for sex by taking a tablet.

To establish whether or not the treatment is appropriate, all prospective patients have an initial consultation with the hospital’s specialist Vijay Sangar, which includes a physical examination and counselling. Treatment usually comprises a series of twelve outpatient visits spread over a nine-week period. Each visit lasts around twenty minutes and after each session the patient is able to carry on with his daily routine right away. The beneficial effects of treatment may be felt quite rapidly, with some patients reporting improvements as early as two weeks after treatment commences.

“ED1000 is a technique that aims to stimulate penile tissue to increase its own natural network of tiny blood vessels and so improve vascular flow,” explains Mr Vijay Sangar, the Consultant Urologist who offers the treatment at Spire Manchester Hospital. “The process involves the application of low intensity acoustic shock waves, rather like ultrasound, to the treatment area. The therapy is non-invasive and painless, with no reported side effects to date.” Early results for the treatment are very encouraging. In one research study1 77% of men with less severe levels of Erectile Dysfunction who had previously responded to medication found themselves able to achieve spontaneous erection and intercourse after ED1000 treatment, without the need for further drug doses. According to current follow-up evidence this treatment can lead to results that have been maintained for up to two years.

“This new class of therapy is potentially very important as it could release men from reliance on medication so that they can once again experience the freedom of spontaneous sexual intercourse,” says Consultant Vijay Sangar. “In this way, by aiming to treat the underlying physical problem there may also be psychological benefits for patients in terms of increased male confidence, sexual enjoyment and self-esteem. Without exaggeration, ED1000 treatment can be life-changing.”

Repair and alterations centre zips into action and helps get Cinderella pupils to the prom The UK’s leading clothing alterations and repairs company, The ZipYard, is gathering pace as school leavers prepare for their end of term balls.

Sunny Thinking worked with Soreen on their ‘Great British Summer of Soreen’ marketing campaign including designing Union Jack packaging for the Queen’s Jubilee, the Olympics and the great summer of sport. And rain never stopped play! If you experienced it belting down at sport grounds across the country, chances are you’ve seen rain covers in action courtesy of Sunny Thinking’s new client, Stuart Canvas.

Sportswear International, ‘Andy Mann’mens health campaign and ‘Safer Drinking in Later Life’ collateral for the NHS won gold. For the fourth year running, their annual report design for Ombudsman Services won too as did their ‘Andy Mann’ guide to STIs. “We’ve also teamed up with Dunham Massey Brewing Company and Sale Rugby Club to launch a limited edition 1861 beer. Award for Morven Morven Millar, Partner at Sale based independent financial advisers, Gresham Wealth Management LLP, has won a prestigious business award. After being shortlisted to the final three, she was announced Winner of the 2012 North West Chartered Financial Planner of the Year at the Chartered Insurance Institute’s annual award ceremony held recently at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester. The award celebrates an outstanding achievement in financial advice for professionalism, innovation and ethics. Morven established the local business only 2 years ago giving fee based advice to individual and corporate clients and in that time Gresham have been awarded Corporate Chartered status by their professional body making them one of only 400 firms nationwide to achieve this accolade.

Number one on the list of garments being brought in for alterations is the ‘prom’ dress with suit jackets and trousers being a close second. As The ZipYard Altrincham has two spacious fitting rooms girls can buy a dress or boys can buy a suit then go straight round to the centre where the expert seamstresses can pin alterations in situ to get the perfect fit. Richard McConnell, owner of The ZipYard Altrincham, said: “We’re getting caught up in the excitement of these proms. For many of the young men and women it’ll be their first formal occasion and obviously they want to look their best on the night. Most people don’t have the time or skills to alter their own clothes. Now they can bring these garments in to us and we’ll make them fit perfectly. “Clothes sizes in the high street vary quite a lot, but now that we’re providing a cost effective alteration service people have the option to buy the outfit they like, even if it is a little too big or too long. Our aim is to have clothes ready within 24 hours so you can buy something on Friday and it’ll be ready to wear on Saturday!” Already well established in Ireland but one of only seven centres to be opened so far in the UK, The ZipYard Altrincham offers a wide range of alteration and tailoring services, all done on site by trained professionals in a clean, purpose-built environment. From dress restyling and taking in or letting out to bridal-wear fitting or formal wear alterations, The ZipYard Altrincham does it all. There is also a 1-hour express service for zips, hems and minor repairs. Shoppers can buy a garment in the morning and have the alterations done in time to wear the outfit that evening. The ZipYard Altrincham is located at 14 Lloyd Street and is open seven days a week. From Monday to Friday the hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm, on Saturday from 9.00am to 5.00pm and on Sunday from 11.00am to 4.00pm. Events industry ’robust enough to come through hard times‘ There are signs that the conferences and exhibitions industry is coming through recession in relatively healthy shape. The main reason for its resilience, according to industry experts, is its ability to constantly innovate while never losing touch with the needs of its clients.

CV 01.indd 28

According to market intelligence provider Key Note, in its review of the sector in 2011: “The exhibitions and conference industry is long established and relatively robust, with strong trade associations and good relationships between organisers, venues and suppliers. It has been able to capitalise on this through investment in improved facilities in many of its major venues. “The events industry is dependent on the markets it serves. As some sectors recover, so will those events organisers which serve them

strengthen — as new industries and service sectors form, the industry is well placed to provide the kind of trade and information environment that will help them flourish. “The UK events sector is well established and experienced; it has been, and continues to be, well placed to expand, whether in specific market sectors or within developing economies globally.” That optimism was underlined by a report compiled jointly by the Events Industry Forum and the Business Visits & Events Partnership,

The Business Magazine of Altrincham & North Cheshire Chamber

8/10/12 15:11:07

FEATURE which suggested the future could be bright for the industry. It highlighted opportunities for growth in the UK Events Industry, which it suggested can grow from its existing £36.1 billion, to £42.2 billion in 2015 and £48.4 billion in 2020. So what are you looking for if you are trying to organise a conference or exhibition and need to select a venue? One of the key factors is a good location, somewhere that is easy to reach and attractive for delegates. If the directions look too complicated, some attendees may think twice about attending. So think road and rail links when you choose. When assessing the venue you are looking at other factors as well. Can it cope with the

numbers expected to attend, has it got a good meeting room, will it provide equipment like projectors and Internet access, are the staff friendly and flexible in helping you meet your needs? In short, can it cope? The good venues are the ones that can tailor themselves to providing the exact needs of the event organisers and are prepared to be flexible. One approach for conference originators is to bring in a specialist company to do the legwork The staff at these outsource companies will have encountered just about every problem presented by the process and take all the worry away from the company originating the event. It’s money well spent.

So you want to stage a successful exhibition? Exhibitions are a great way of getting the word out about your company and your sector but there’s more to it than simply hiring in a few stands. A few simple measures can save a lot of time and effort and make sure you get the most of out of the event. Here are some useful tips: * Start early. Regular exhibitors start planning their schedules six to twelve months in advance. So must you if you want your event to attract the right people and get your event in their diary * Have a clear vision for what you wish the show to achieve. Do you want to raise your profile or is it more important that you come out of the event with leads and orders? Making sure you know what you want to achieve is crucial and avoids disappointments later * Be creative. Exhibitions have moved on from simply having ‘a stand‘. Exhibitors like to do things to attract the eye so, as organiser, your need to be able to offer facilities for interactive displays and maybe even performances * Abide by the 80/20 rule - The best exhibitors are those who listen more than talk and the best organisers tend to do likewise and focus on what the exhibitor wants * Make sure your team are professional, well-dressed and polite at all times. Exhibitions need to have a sense that everyone is there to do business * Get the level of staffing right. Make sure you recruit the right amount of staff to keep your event running smoothly. *Train your staff, make sure they can answer the kinds of questions that exhibitors are likely to ask * Keep the floor plan simple; it is vital that visitors can easily understand the layout of the event and find their way around with the minimum of fuss. Large exhibitions can be bewildering events so adding to visitors’ problems with poor layout can only detract from the success of the event so make sure there is plenty of clear signposting * One of the things that makes an exhibition successful is a sense that something is happening so it is useful to have staged areas for demonstrations and performances, or for companies to show their products at work. Some event organisers bring in the likes of musicians and magicians to add a touch of flavour. It might not sell anything and it might not be conventional but it all adds to the USP and makes sure people remember the exhibition * Involve the media. Have a press pack available in the media/press room, invite journalists, be prepared to give interviews * Once the event is over, follow up. Call exhibitors, listen to their views and act on their feedback. That will make your next event even better.

ADVERTORIAL

Pensions reform set to have major impact New rules designed to resolve the UK’s pensions savings crisis are set to have a major impact on employers and employees alike as wide-reaching reforms have started to take place this month.

With people living longer and facing the possibility of funding a retirement that could now last 20 years or more, the Government is getting employers to enrol their workers automatically into a workplace pension to make it easier for people to start saving and not rely solely on the state pension. This automatic enrolment will allow people to decide whether to stay in or opt out of a workplace pension. It has already begun for the largest employers, and workers (unless they specifically opt out) will automatically join and pay into their employers’ staff pension schemes which could be an existing or new scheme to which the employer will also contribute and the Government by way of tax relief on employees’ contributions. Smaller employers and newly formed businesses will have until 2016/17 to comply. It is all designed to reinvigorate pension saving in the UK, create a simpler system to help people make better informed decisions about how much they need to save privately, and make it easier for them to plan for their retirement. Minister for Pensions Steve Webb has described the new reforms as “the start of a much-needed seismic shift in pension saving in this country” (Source: Department of Work & Pensions press release 1st February, 2012). The reforms follow the failure of stakeholder pension schemes, which foundered because they required no contribution commitment from the employer and excluded many smaller employers. Automatic enrolment recognises that the solution lies in private provision and compels all employers to enrol eligible jobholders in a workplace pension scheme, unless they are already a member

30

of a qualifying scheme. Contributions will be collected and paid to the scheme by the employer through the payroll system. For automatic enrolment, employers will have to choose a pension scheme, perhaps an existing one or a scheme set up with a pension provider. Information from the Pension Regulator (www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk) is now available to help companies make this decision. A fundamental principle is that the jobholder must be enrolled and will then be able to opt out. Employers will be banned from incentivising opt-outs. Pensions can seem a confusing subject, full of financial jargon and complicated rules, and the new reforms provide much food for thought. Certainly for employers, a proper strategy is going to be essential and most small to medium scheme advisers consider that planning should already have started. The project will require an accountable manager and team. Employers should be mindful too of the requirements and restrictions of the Financial Services Act. They may invite an adviser to present to staff, and there is no problem in giving staff information that includes no recommendation or advice. In addition, there is no problem recommending that employees join a scheme to which the employer contributes. It is vital that the employer informs the employee that advice is available from a financial adviser, and the employer should take no financial reward for establishing a scheme.

very different from your working one, both personally and financially. Outgoings are likely to be lower, but you may want to spend more money on leisure activities. Retirement is like a holiday – but every one of your retirement years has to be paid for. That is why it is essential to seek professional advice and start planning for retirement now, whatever your age, to provide an income that is going to see you through potentially many more years than those enjoyed by previous generations. It’s another good news story from homes4u... Whilst the National average level of rent arrears has risen to 9.3%, local agent homes4u is reporting arrears of just 2.5% on their entire managed portfolio of over 1500 properties. Dawn Marshall, Lead home advisor at homes4u’s Altrincham Branch, says: “Many landlords will have seen recent press coverage that overall rent arrears have risen nationwide in July, with 9.3% of all rent late or unpaid at the end of the month, an increase from 9.2% in June. A recent poll of 546 landlords by The National Landlords Association also revealed that half (49%) had experienced rent arrears in the past six months and 37% are concerned about their tenants falling into arrears in the upcoming months. We are therefore thrilled to be able to announce we are bucking the trend. We offer landlords extra security with rental guarantee insurance for the initial tenancy term as part of our Gold Plus Management Services, offered at our Altrincham Branch.” Providing professional advice the team of over fifty at homes4u each have an average of 7 years property experience, and many hold industry qualifications. On The Move

All change at Milner Boardman John Gale left Altrincham firm Milner Boardman in mid-September and has been replaced as Associate Director by Joanne Cooper. The change came because John had been commuting from his home in Londonderry and, for family reasons, was unable to re-locate to the Manchester area. Joanne, who takes over as Associate Director – Head of Corporate Tax, qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser with Milner Boardman in 2006/07. She then moved to a mid-tier firm Champion where she has spent five years specialising in all forms of tax planning.
