Girl with titanium spine takes to the air A Darlington student who three years ago underwent surgery involving the insertion of titanium rods into her spine has zip wired from the top of the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge in aid of charity. Carmel College sixth form student Emma-Jo Blundy, of Woodham, Newton Aycliffe, raised more than £240.
volunteers to take part, I just jumped at the chance. I don’t generally tell people about my surgery, as that is all in the past and I just get on with things.
She underwent the surgery to correct curvature of her spine caused by the debilitating condition Scoliosis.
“I am passionate about helping others in any way I can and I guess my own experience of being in hospital made me want to see what I could do to help carers that are so important in the aftercare of all kinds of people. Without support from my family, I wouldn’t have been able to cope with my own surgery and rehabilitation.
The operation at the James Cook Hospital had complications and required two further operations to correct a problem that caused temporary paralysis in her legs and to partially correct her spinal curvature. The Take A Day Out charity for which Emma-Jo performed her zip wire exploits is also based in Newton Aycliffe and provides time out for full time carers. Emma-Jo said: “I just couldn’t resist the opportunity to do something for charity. I work a few hours each week at the Cobblers Hall pub in Cobblers Hall in Newton Aycliffe and their strong bond with the Take A Day Out charity inspired me to get involved. “When they mentioned they were looking for
“When the person at the bridge said ‘when you are ready, just let go’ - I didn't even wait for them to finish - ‘I was off’. It was really fast and over all too quickly, I want to do it again.” Peter Sheen, who runs the charity, said: “When I found out about Emma-Jo’s own situation I couldn’t believe it, it’s just outstanding that she would help us out in this way, we are very grateful and very humbled.” Emma-Jo is studying Sociology, Business, ICT and Photography at ‘A’ Level, at Carmel. New study highlights importance of food industry to Darlington Food is something we take for granted but now a report has shown how important it is to Darlington’s economy. A survey by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) suggests that the food industry supports about 2,250 jobs in and around Darlington, possibly many more if other local traders and services supported by local food businesses are included. Called From field to fork, the report builds a picture of Darlington’s food network and key findings include: n Of 53 food and drink retail outlets surveyed, 47 or 91% in the 2.5-mile radius core study area, including fixed premises and market stalls, sell some locally sourced produce n More than 125 local food suppliers within 30 miles supply fresh or lightly processed local

food into the town centre, with retailers fed by chains of up to three local suppliers n Sales of local produce generate about £4 million in turnover a year for the 32 independent outlets (excluding farmers’ market stalls and national supermarket chains) identified as selling local food in Darlington. These outlets serve more than 57,000 customers weekly n There is considerable demand for local food. Consumers value its high quality and taste and want to support local farmers and producers as well as the wider local economy n Outlets sourcing local produce are supporting small farms and sustainable farming practices n Many people appreciate the environmental benefits of local food, such as reduced food miles, animal welfare, and conservation efforts.
Thea Platt, Local Food Campaigner for CPRE, said: “This report identifies some of the challenges for the local food web in and around Darlington but also many great opportunities for the local authority, businesses and the community to act and to improve policy to make a difference.”

Food for thought as scheme starts Funding has been secured for a project which celebrates home-grown food. Social enterprise Groundwork North East has been awarded more than £234,000 for a twoyear project covering the Tees Valley with support from the Local Food organisation. Residents from selected schools and streets in the Darlington, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool, Stockton, and Redcar and Cleveland areas, will be offered help to grow food in spaces not traditionally associated with fruit and vegetables, such as containers and window boxes, back alleys and yards. Kate Culverhouse, Managing Director of Groundwork North East, said: “This will benefit the local communities, not only in terms of providing an activity that everyone can enjoy, but it will provide a long-term solution to making sure people get their five-a-day in fruit and veg.“

Building society undergoes refurbishment Darlington Building Society has been refurbishing its town centre branch. As part of the programme, the branch will be split in two and one of the parts will be sub-let. The remaining part will be redesigned into a more modern branch office.

Staff and students at St Aidan’s Church of England Academy, in Darlington, raised more than £500 in an event designed to help fund a guide dog. The students from Wilfrid House, one of the houses at the Hundens Lane academy, spent several months planning a fun day for dogs and their owners to support their ongoing campaign for the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity. Their event included a sponsored walk for owners and dogs around the field as well as stalls and other activities; Assistant Principal
Stephanie Francom bravely volunteered to be gunged. The £538 raised at the fun day takes the House’s total over the past year to £1,200; the total needed to train and fund a guide dog is £5,000 and more events are being planned. House Manager Gaynor Goad, who organised the event along with fellow staff and students on the Wilfrid Charity Committee, said: “We hope to fund a puppy who can be trained and the event was a brilliant way of raising funds while also raising people‘s awareness about the charity.”
The branch has been hosting a gallery allowing members of the Darlington Society of Arts to display their work. This was so popular that a new gallery will be part of the redesigned layout. Work commenced in September and was planned to take eight weeks. During the refurbishment, the branch has remained open. The architects overseeing the work is Darlington-based Nivens and the main contractor is Ultimate Office Solutions. Val Peacock, Darlington District Manager based at the Society’s Tubwell Row branch, said: “At a time when some town centres are struggling through a lack of investment it is pleasing to see Darlington Building Society taking the opposite approach demonstrating not only its commitment to the town of Darlington but also making a huge investment in its own future.”

RUNNErs raise £1,100 for charity Residents, friends and staff at a retirement village raised more than £1,100 for a wildlife charity. The Woodland Walk Charity Event took place at Middleton Hall Retirement Village, in Middleton St George, near Darlington, and saw the community run or walk 176 miles between them in just a few hours. The event, which raised £1,137 for Durham Wildlife Trust, marked the launch of Middleton Hall’s new Woodland Walk which has been designed to take advantage of the village’s surroundings. The runners comprised Middleton Hall’s managing director Jeremy Walford, healthy living coordinator Charlotte Howe, assistant chef Paul Milford, head of operations David Richardson and maintenance supervisor Alan Grainge.
Residents and their families, who also took part in the event, could use either the new wheelchair friendly woodland route or the one mile Woodland Walk. Middleton Hall has recently become a corporate member of the Durham Wildlife Trust and Jeremy Walford said: “Given how important wildlife is to us at Middleton Hall and how it thrives here, the trust seemed an ideal charity to raise money for.” Jim Cokill, director of Durham Wildlife Trust said: “The support we’ve had from Middleton Hall is fantastic, and the trust will be using the money raised to support our work with schools and community groups in the Darlington area. “There’s lots of evidence now that shows the benefits a wildlife-rich environment can bring to people’s health and well-being, and Middleton Hall is a real example of that approach.”
Tackling health problems that reduce life expectancy Organisations across Darlington are preparing plans to increase life expectancy in the area. The work comes on the back of evidence suggesting that life expectancy and the general health of people in Darlington is improving but that there remain concerns. Among those drawing up the Health and Social Care Delivery Plan are Darlington Borough Council, Public Health, Darlington Clinical Commissioning Group and other organisations. They say that, although people are living longer, there remain differences in life expectancy between Darlington residents from different communities. For example, the life expectancy for men varies by as much as 13 years across Darlington and by more than ten years for women, according to the Association of Public Health Observatories.
The Health and Social Care Delivery Plan outlines ways to reduce the number of people becoming unwell, and aims to help people manage longterm conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, heart disease and diabetes. Councillor Andy Scott, Cabinet Member for Health and Partnerships, said: “I am determined that, by working together with our partners, we can make a difference and reduce that 13-year gap in life expectancy. However, the partnership involves us all and we all need to help by taking responsibility for our own health and wellbeing.” For more information, contact the council by e-mail at communities@darlington.gov.uk, call 01325 388527 or leave comments on Facebook – www.facebook.com/darlingtonboroughcouncil or/ and twitter - @darlingtonbc
A sharp-eyed teenager is in line for an award after helping to save the life of an elderly man who had gone missing from his home in Darlington. The 83-year-old man was reported missing by his carer on a Sunday morning in late September after last being seen at his home in Darlington at midday the previous day. He was known to become easily confused and have no provisions for staying out overnight. Later on the Sunday, a family a four, including Laura Dean, 13, were travelling along the Staindrop road on their way home to Darlington. Laura, who was in the back seat, thought she’d seen something in a field through a gap in a hedge. Laura, who attends Hummersknott Academy, said: “It took a few seconds for it to sink in, then I told my parents and persuaded them to turn back. I’m very relieved we found him when we did.” Inspector Sukhsham Sahani said: “Without a shadow of doubt, Laura’s acute observation skills have saved this man’s life. He was unable to move due to the length of time he had been lying in the field, and the weather conditions were worsening. We’re making arrangements to make sure she’s formally recognised for her efforts.”

Honour for talented pupils Pupils from Polam Hall had the honour of being one of only a handful of schools to be selected for special art workshops at the National Portrait Gallery. Seventeen Year Ten GSCE Art students from the Darlington school were given a guided VIP tour of the renowned London attraction, where the focus of their attention was the Lucian Freud exhibition. This was followed by a Lucien Freud oil painting workshop led by artist Sadie Lee, who also has exhibited at the gallery. The students, aged 15, were given a lesson in doing a self-portrait in oils, the first time they have painted with this medium, in the style of Freud. Their self-portraits will form part of their Controlled Assessed for their GCSE Art Examination and feature in an exhibition at the college’s annual Art and Music Evening on Thursday May 23.

COMMEMORATING A MARITIME TRAGEDY A nationally-acclaimed exhibition focusing on the sinking of The Titanic has opened at Darlington’s Head of Steam Railway Museum and will run until March.
The exhibition also features examples of the luxurious interiors of Titanic through rare examples from her sister ships, Olympic and Britannic.
Titanic Honour & Glory, voted by The Times newspaper as one of the top five exhibitions in the country, visits Darlington as part of a tour commemorating the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.
Sean Szmalc, who created the exhibition with Margot Corson, said: “Each visitor to the exhibition will get a feeling of what it was like to have been on Titanic.”
The exhibition has never been seen before in Darlington and features rare artefacts from the liner’s passengers and crew.
More details will be announced later. Jo Land, owner of Café Create, organiser of the Literary Festival, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for the people of Darlington.“ More information can be found at www.darlingtonforculture.org
Businessmen given more time on arts centre plan The businessmen putting together plans to develop the former Arts Centre site in Darlington have been given more time to finalise their proposal. Plans to sell the site were put on hold earlier this year when borough councillors agreed to allow time for the development of a proposal by private investors Graham Thrower and Andy Bottomley. They hope to transform the site into a venue including galleries, events space, a hotel, restaurant, business units and a home for Theatre Hullabaloo. The businessmen are now waiting for the outcome of a submission to the Arts Council for funding with a decision due in January. The borough council, which owns the building, has granted them the extra time they require. Andy Bottomley said: “Much remains to be done and the outcome is still uncertain but we remain wholly committed to continuing to work diligently and in good faith towards a successful conclusion.” The site is currently occupied on a temporary basis, with short termresidential tenants.
The exhibition will be open from Wednesday Sunday until 31 March between 11am– 3.30pm. More details available from the museum on 01325 460532.

Home, sweet home as Zoë prepares to star in Panto A lot has changed since Zoë Birkett last stepped onto the stage at Darlington Civic Theatre to star in Panto. Since appearing in Snow White in 2007, she has gone on to cement her status as a West End performer and made numerous television appearances. However, as she prepares to star in Sleeping Beauty, this year’s Panto, her delight to be back on stage in Darlington shines through. Sitting in the Stalls at the theatre, she said: “It’s really good to be back at the Civic. “It’s five years since Snow White and it feels good to be back. “When I walked in through the front door and saw some familiar faces, then went to hang up my clothes in the dressing room, I felt a great warmth. “This is my home. I made my first appearance here at the age of eleven and I love this theatre. “I knew from the age of five what I wanted to be. I would come to the theatre and see people on stage and think ’that’s where I want to be’. “My first appearance at the Civic was in Joseph and his Technocolor Dreamcoat and I loved it. It was a real thrill. I performed here a few times after that, gaining experience. “I owe so much to the Civic. If it was not for this theatre, I am not sure I would be doing what I am doing now. It gave me the experience of being on stage. “I do not get home much but I still have lots of family living in the town and they tell me that people are looking forward to the Panto and are buying tickets. “And walking through Darlington before coming to the theatre for the photocall, people were coming up and wishing me luck. It’s been overwhelming. ”I have not really had a proper holiday since last year and there was a temptation to say no and take a holiday when my agent rang up, saying I had an offer of Panto, but then I heard it was Darlington and said yes straightaway. “It’ll be like a holiday for me, anyway. I’ll be at home, which is where I feel most relaxed, if I am honest.” The Zoë Birkett story is a remarkable one. She first entered the national consciousness in 2002 when, at the age of just 16, she was one of the youngest performers in ITV’s hit show Pop Idol, finishing fourth behind eventual winner Will

Be a Santa to a senior ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ is heart-warming new initiative being launched in Darlington this Christmas and the aim is to ensure that elderly people in our community, who would otherwise not receive a gift this Christmas, receive one this year. The way it works is simple – we ask local retailers to display a ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ Christmas tree (or similar). The tree is decorated with gift tags with the first name (to maintain confidentiality) of a local person and the gift they would enjoy receiving. Members of the public can then buy the named gift and leave it with
the retailer for collection. What we need now are local retailers to come forward and partner with us on this scheme. If there are any shop owners out there who would like to support this unique initiative, please feel free to contact me on 01325 467833 or email diane.chandler@homeinstead.co.uk.

Festive shoppers can look forward to two days of seasonal shopping at this free event in the Museum grounds on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December, from 10.004.00, with over 90 stalls featuring gifts and produce from some of the finest suppliers in the North East. This year, for the first time, there will be a free park and ride scheme in operation. The ‘Santa Bus’, operated by Cumbria Classic Coaches, will leave GlaxoSmithKline car park in the town’s Harmire Road, for the Museum at regular intervals. Santa himself will be snug in his grotto inside the Museum, while his reindeer will brave the elements to be fed and petted by visitors. Admission to the grotto is £4.50 per child, which includes free admission to the Museum for one accompanying adult, children’s activities and a Christmas trail. A wide variety of goods will be on sale at the market, including local meats and chocolates, Christmas cakes, liqueurs, festive wreaths, cupcakes, jewellery, paintings and pottery. www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk

Taste Test Christmas is the time to eat, drink and be merry and here at Darlington Today we’ve taken that sentiment to heart. Over the past few weeks we’ve been taste testing some of the finest food and beverages to bring you our mouth-watering guide to this season’s essential indulgences…
Sweet Treats Satisfy your sweet tooth chocaholic style with Green and Black’s mini collections (£5.49 from all major retailers), a Thorntons’ Ronnie the Reindeer (from 79p, Thorntons), a bag of Beyond Dark chocolate drops (95p, Sainsbury’s or Holland and Barrett), Chocs Away Old Chip gourmet marshmallows or a Christmas Yule Log from the Half Baked Chocolate Co (£5, Tesco) which comes ready to bake so you can even tell people you made it yourself. If you prefer your sweet treat with a crunch then we recommend a box of Traidcraft’s Ginger Christmas Tree Biscuits (£2.40, Traidcraft.co.uk) or something from Fudges’ fantastic range, such as the cranberry biscuits dipped in white chocolate (£2.75 Asda). If you’re prepared to splash out a bit try Miniature Bakery’s Gold Collection, hand baked in Yorkshire (£10, independent retailers) or a truly indulgent Biscuiteers Winter Wonderland Hamper (£199 + P&P, biscuiteers.com) complete with everything you need to see you through the Christmas break. For a softer sugar hit we enjoyed Joe & Sephs gourmet popcorn, especially the festive flavours like caramel with brandy infused fruit and almonds (from £2.99 independent retailers and department stores), Haribo’s Merry Snowmen (65p per bag, all major retailers) and the unique Nudo Olive Oil Panettone, which even comes wrapped in pretty paper (£15 see www.nudo-italia.com for stockists).
Savoury Snacks For a savoury snack, few things are more enjoyable than a big plate of cheese and crackers. Our particular preference this time of year is a generous helping of Boursin Fig and Nut (from £2.20, Tesco and Asda) and Wensleydale with Cranberries (prices vary, major supermarkets), served with a generous dollop of Eat 17 Bacon Jam (£2.99, Tesco) or Jme Mint Jelly (£3.75, John Lewis) and a side of olives in chilli and garlic from Olives et Al (£4, Sainsbury’s). For a tasty alternative to traditional crackers try Crosta & Mollica Grissini (flavoured breadsticks). Our top choice is the Classic variety with extra virgin olive oil and the Black Olive version (£1.89, Waitrose), which is just as nice on its own. If you’re not a cheese fan, then tuck into a bag of maple bacon flavour Penn State Pretzels (£1.40, Asda) or the unusual Swanky Veg Tyrrells crisps (from 69p, independent retailers) and keep the kids quiet with their own serving of Pom-Bear’s Snowmen crisps (£1.39, Asda).
26 | DarlingtonToday
Drinks Start Christmas Day in style with a glass of Buck’s Fizz, made using freshly squeezed orange juice and Champagne Jacquart Brut de Nominee (£64, Great Western Wines) or Champagne Jacquart Brut Mosaique NV (£18 until February 4, Majestic). Over lunch, enjoy a glass of red, such as Faustino I (£14.99, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Costco), Cono Sur 20 Barrels Pinot Noir (£19.99, Morrisons) or AOC Minervois, Chateau Sainte Eulalie 2010 (£6.95, The Wine Society) or white, including Cune Barrel Fermented Blanco (£9.49, Waitrose), The Society’s Exhibition Sauternes 2009 (£9.95, The Wine Society) or AOC Chassagne Montrachet, Marc Colin, Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Vide-Bourse 2010 (£21.95, Goedhuis & Co). With dessert , grab a glass of Sainsbury’s House Dessert Wine (£3.99, Sainsbury’s) or if you’re a beer drinker, a bottle of Liefmans fruitesse, fruit beer (£1.79, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Tesco) or limited edition Innis and Gunn Winter Treacle Porter (£2.50, Sainsbury’s and Booths). For a naughty nightcap, try a tipple of Penederyn Madeira Single Malt Welsh Whisky (£33.50, Tesco), Black Grouse Alpha (£29.99, the famousgrouse.com) or the new Naked Grouse (£28.21, Tesco). If you prefer something softer, then we can recommend Shloer’s Limited Edition Berry Punch (£2.29, all good retailers) or Gran Stead’s Traditional Still Lemonade, particularly the one with added ginger (£2.25, major retailers). For a real winter warmer though it has to be a mug of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee (£14.99, seaislandcoffee.com), Sweet Chilli Flavour Higher Living Tea (varieties from £1.70-£1.99 Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, Holland & Barrett) or Belvoir’s range of fruit cordials, such as Apple, Plum and Cinnamon (from £1.65, leading supermarkets).
Dinner Time Essentials Christmas simply isn’t Christmas without a turkey and all the trimmings. Make the most of your bird this Christmas Day by serving it with a whole host of seasonal vegetables and a healthy helping of potatoes. Keep it simple with McCain Roast Potatoes (£1.15 Asda, £1.85 at all other major retailers) ready to pop straight in the oven or try using the new Flair spuds, developed exclusively for Sainsbury’s to create the perfect mash (£2, Sainsbury’s). Top it all off with a serving of Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce – we particularly liked the Wholeberry variety (£1.49, all major supermarkets) – and get stuck in. If, however, you’re bored of turkey and want to try something a little different this year, then we suggest a Packington Free Range Cockerel, priced from £69 to feed a family of 15 (available for direct delivery from packingtonfreerange.co.uk).
Crackers Make your Christmas go with a bang with our pick of this year’s best Christmas crackers. Keep costs low with the deluxe pack of 12 Plum Family Crackers from Dunelm Mill (£4.99), packed with a great selection of gifts from bouncy balls to playing cards or up the game with the Waters & Noble Cream Luxury Crackers (£9.99, Dunelm Mill), including prizes such as cufflinks and mini chess sets. If you really want to spread the joy this festive season, then you should also try some of 2012’s charity crackers. We particularly liked Arthritis UK’s Christmas Kraft Crackers, which include a range of tree decorations and are 100 per cent recyclable (£7.99, arthritisresearchuk.org/shop).

Lapland, a place of dreams for all ages Christmas is nearly upon us and as people contemplate the season of good cheer, thoughts turn to the good old reindeer. And when it comes to good old reindeers, that means Lapland. Lapland has become a hugely popular destination for people looking to celebrate Yuletide in a different way, and it‘s certainly worth the effort, not just at Christmas but all year round. Lapland offers its visitors four seasons that very distinctly differ from one another. Spring, summer, autumn take up half the year with winter taking the rest and the landscapes when you get there are staggering, everything from fells to the aapa bogs rich with birdlife, from hilly regions to expansive river waterways. The most common and best known animal is, of course, the reindeer which is the centrepiece of Christmas trips, alongside Santa Claus, of course. According to locals, Santa lives and works with his elves at Korvatunturi (Ear Mountain), which rises to a height of 483 metres. Its name in Finnish means Ear Mountain due to the three large ‘ears’ positioned on its summit. A secret office is located deep within Korvatunturi for processing children’s wishes, after which Santa, Mrs Claus and the elves do the manufacturing in their workshop. Korvatunturi is also Santa’s home, which is why its secret meandering tunnels can only be accessed by Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and the elves. But you knew that already. Santa Claus is such an important figure that, in addition to Korvatunturi, he has a number of bases all over Lapland where he greets visitors. The tradition has become so popular that Lapland receives visitors from all over the world at this time of year.
As for the reindeer, they outnumber humans. Lapland has a population of 184,390 inhabitants 2.1 people per square kilometre, 58,856 of them living in the capital Rovaniemi but there are about 200,000 reindeer. It’s a big industry for Lapland where there are 6,500 reindeer owners and herders. Visitors to the area will soon discover that Santa and reindeers are just two influences on Lappish culture due to its proximity to Sweden, Finland, Norway and Russia. Each country has strong links with Lapland and each has an influence on the way the people live and work. As a result, the cultural differences between Lapland’s regions are marked. The Swedishinfluenced West Lapland district, for instance, is worlds apart from the Sámi culture of North Lapland with completely different language and traditions. Lapland is well geared up for visitors with more than 20,000 beds and 1,000 tourism enterprises, 90 of which are hotels. Figures for 2008 showed that 2.3 million people stayed overnight, 40% of whom were foreigners, many of them there for the skiing. A visit offers so many other opportunities as well, from Lapland’s greatest lake Inarijärvi (1,102 km²) to its highest point, Halti Mountain (1,328 m). It all makes for the trip of a lifetime.
How to get there Finnish Lapland is one of the remotest places in the world but you can still get here by plane, train, bus, and car.
By air There are a number of daily flights to different parts of Lapland and, depending where you fly from, it takes in the region of three to three and a half hours from the UK. Lapland’s airports are located in Kemi, Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Enontekiö and Ivalo. Travel destinations are easy to reach from the airports, either by bus or taxis. Many tour operators and travel agencies organise trips to Lapland with direct charter flights and readymade packages. Ask your local agency for more information.
By train There are good rail connections to Lapland from all over Finland. When travelling by train, you can even take your car along with you. The journey by train from Helsinki to the railways of Lapland in Kemi, Rovaniemi, Kolari or Kemijärvi takes an average of 12 hours. The journey is easily continued to various destinations from the railway stations. Ski buses operate in most of the ski resorts.
By car You can also easily reach Lapland with your own car or a rented car. Once you arrive in Lapland, you can hire a car or travel by taxi or bus. The most direct road route from Helsinki to Lapland travels via Lahti, Jyväskylä and Oulu to Rovaniemi. Other popular routes include the highway joining the coastal towns of West Finland (E 75) heading north and the eastern route that goes through the towns of Lappeenranta, Joensuu, Kajaani and Kuusamo.
