REGIONAL CHAIRMAN’S LETTER Dear Member As the Chairman of the Yorkshire Region it is my pleasure to introduce the programme of events for the 2011-2012 year. The Area committees of Yorkshire have put a lot of effort into pulling these events together for you, the membership, and we really look forward to seeing you at some of the events during the year. Some key events to look out for are the Regional Prestige Lecture on the Vulcan Restoration project being held on 27th October at Robin Hood Airport, and of course our main event of the year, the Presidential Visit to the Region. This year, Professor Rod Smith, the former Head of Department for Mechanical Engineering at Sheffield University, will be visiting the South Yorkshire Area in his capacity as the 126th President of the Institution. The event will culminate in a Regional Dinner for our Members at the magnificent Cutlers Hall in Sheffield. Although still in the planning stages, I suggest you get your name down early for this ‘grand event’ on 15th March 2012. You will also find a whole host of other events that will cater for your interest in mechanical engineering. Just take a look through the programme card and see what we have going on throughout the coming year. If you prefer the digital world, then the Institution’s Near You website will have the latest information on all events, including an electronic version of this programme card http://nearyou.imeche.org/uk/york/. To receive e-mail notifications of events, now would be a good time to make sure that your e-mail address is up-to-date by logging into the IMechE website and updating your profile. Some of our Areas also have Facebook pages where they will keep you up-to-date with events in their area of Yorkshire. The Yorkshire Region also has an official twitter feed @IMechE_Yorks where I will be keeping you up-to-date with the latest happenings and news from the Yorkshire Region. Be the first to hear what’s going on by following us! If you would like to get a little more involved, maybe you know someone who could give an excellent lecture, maybe you would like to network some more, or would like to engage the next generation of potential engineers, then why don’t you get in touch with one of the committees to offer your assistance. They will be very grateful for your support. I would like to thank Mark Hesketh for his dedication and hard work over the last 2 years as Chairman, and I look forward to leading the committee and Region during this next term of office. Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Charlie Baxter. Charlie has been the Yorkshire Region’s Admin Officer for 6 years and in that time has been the cornerstone of the Region, making sure that everything happens from events to meetings, from training to presidential visits. Charlie has decided to hang up her Admin Officer’s hat and return to her career in engineering, but will remain as a volunteer on the Northern Area committee. I know that I echo all Yorkshire Region committees when I state that Charlie has provided us with excellent support over the years, and we wish her the very best with her future career. You will be pleased to hear that we have already appointed a new Admin Officer, Nicky Baxter. We welcome Nicky to the Yorkshire Region of the Institution and look forward to working with her. For continuity, we have transferred the Admin Officer contact details over to Nicky, so she can be contacted on tel: 0113 3910537, e-mail: YorksAdmin@imechenetwork.org. PAGE 04
Yours faithfully Andy Hamilton CEng FIMechE, Yorkshire Region Chairman
YOUNG MEMBERS’ EVENTS As the Region’s Young Members tend to be more fluid with their events, reacting to topical issues and external factors, their events are not included in the event listings. To find out about their events remember to keep checking http://nearyou.imeche.org/uk/york/ or follow them on Facebook and Twitter (links available from the Near You website). The Young Members will be organising the Speak Out For Engineering competition early in 2012. This is judged mainly on presentation skills and prizes are awarded.
