Welcome! The only thing we can be certain of right now is that we are entering a new period of uncertainty. We believe that Norfolk Chamber members are well placed to deal with the issues, and to take advantage of the opportunities which will arise, as they must. We have a strong Norfolk economy and a real partnership between the public, private and voluntary sectors which is the envy of many areas within the UK. What’s essential is that we stay focused and ensure that our political leaders provide clarity, stability and action as they finalise a national economic plan. It will, however, not be wise to leave this to Westminster alone. Norfolk needs to provide evidence of what we need to drive our businesses forward and create the certainty needed to continue to retain and employ additional staff. Norfolk Chamber has the advantage of an office in Westminster. The British Chambers of Commerce is a global network of likeminded Chambers, and some of the most innovative member companies in the country. If you want to do business locally, regionally or internationally we have the contacts, so please do get in touch. The phrase ‘business as usual’ is being used a great deal at the moment. As far as the opportunities the Chamber has planned it really is true. Our annual technology event -Talking Technology 2016 Unlocking Digital Growth - takes place on 21 September (page 39) and we have some amazing speakers who will inspire you, and give you practical solutions.

European Hokey Cokey...! Hopefully by the time you read this the whole European Hokey Cokey will be over and we will either be in, out, or shaking it all about! Clearly it is the latter which has the greatest potential to impact on business. Whether we make the decision to stay in or come out, it is absolutely essential for the growth and stability of the economy that we all work together following the decision. The recent political wrangling by all parties and sides of the equation have not helped inform the public, or make it any easier for the majority of us to come to an informed decision.
It is really important that when it is all over that our government pulls itself back together and gets on with running the country, with those looking for short term political gain stepping back and waiting for the appropriate time to try and further their careers. Throughout the campaign, the Chamber has taken a neutral stance, aiming to provide factual impartial information to its members. Again we will continue to do this following the vote, trying to get answers from government on the key issues which will face business whether we stay in or out. Look out for the regular policy updates and articles on our website. I am personally keen to get on with all the new business that will be moving forward after the vote, and hopefully preparing for a very busy final quarter of the year.

Chamber welcomes new offshore wind farm development. Vattenfall Wind Power Ltd is one of Europe’s largest generators of electricity and has been in business over 100 years. Their story began in 1909 during the restructuring of the Trollhättan canal and hydro power plant to the Swedish State Power Board. The Swedish state had bought the water rights in Trollhättan a few years earlier and was now
taking an active involvement in this emerging electricity generation technology. At present, Vattenfall is one of Europe’s largest generators of electricity through multiple sources including hydro, nuclear, wind and more. Vattenfall has a huge presence in the UK with projects and assets
based in England, Scotland and Wales. Most recently, Vattenfall have launched an offshore wind farm project off the coast of East Anglia. Fifth Form pupils at Norwich School, have just completed a unique programme, Entrepreneurial Excellence, which starts them on their CPD (continued professional development) journey. Given the challenge of extending the entrepreneurial offering to pupils at the school beyond the Sixth Form, Tom White (Head of Economics) engaged local business MoCo and The Entrepreneurial Excellence programme was born. It is the first training of its kind aimed at 15/16 year olds which has received accreditation from the CPD Standards Office. Amanda Rosewarne, Director of CPD Accreditation and Research at The CPD Standards Office commented, “The Entrepreneurial Excellence course has been assessed by a rigorous third party
assessment process to ensure that its content is fully appropriate for CPD purposes and delivered to the highest possible standard.” Delivered over a 6 week period, the content covered topics such as effective communication, teamwork, managing stress and creative approaches to problem solving. According to Steve Ferrey from MoCo, “The key concept of the programme is to be outcome orientated.” Pupils at Norwich School have undoubtedly benefitted and there will be very few 15/16 year olds in the country that have a CPD accredited course behind them before they even receive their GCSE results.

NORFOLK VOICE • THE MAGAZINE OF NORFOLK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY
“At the start of the process we set out to bring genuine value to our customers rather than focusing on the certification as a tick-box exercise. We’re particularly proud of the praise given to us by the lead auditor for our creation of a highly relevant quality management system which was produced completely in house without use of an external consultant.”
The beer takes its name from the Murtel Fish Tavern, the Maids Head’s predecessor, which was trading on Wensum Street, then known as Cook Rowe, from at least 1287. The change of name to the Maids Head was confirmed by John Paston in a letter dated 2 November 1482. The Maids Head supported Sistema in Norwich, during City of Ale, by donating 20p to the local music charity for every pint of Murtel Fish Ale sold. Marcus Patteson, Programme Director for Sistema in Norwich, said: “It is fantastic to get support from such a high profile Norwich business as the Maids Head. We are trying to get more local businesses involved with Sistema and I’d like to thank Christine Malcolm and her team for working with us.” Christine Malcolm, General Manager, Maids Head, said: “We have had a long and successful relationship with Woodforde’s and are very proud to be serving Norfolk beer in our 16th Century Maids Head Bar.” Rupert Farquharson, Managing Director Woodforde’s,said: “As well as brewing delicious local beer, part of our duty is to preserve and promote the rich heritage of Norfolk. The Maids Head as a venue is steeped in charm and history with a unique story to be told.”

Nationwide supports EACH as charity partner.
Company launches Direct to Media Printing.
Peerless Plastics and Coatings have announced a new addition to their range, Direct to Media Print. Branches of Nationwide Building Society across East Anglia will be helping children and young people with life-threatening conditions in the region as they pledge their support for EACH. The 28 branches of Nationwide will be supporting EACH as their charity partner. They will all be organising their own fundraising activities including book sales, dress down days, sponsored activities and taking part in planned EACH events. Nationwide staff in all branches have already been busy fundraising and so far have raised an impressive £5,500. Nationwide branches aim to raise £16,000 collectively, which is the amount needed to fund one day of care and support that EACH provides across
East Anglia to families at a time when they need it most. Maxine Smith, Branch Manager at Nationwide in Sheringham, said: “We are pleased to be supporting EACH as our charity partner to help fund the work they do with families across East Anglia. We hope to raise as much money as possible so please keep an eye open in your local branch and support our fundraising in any way you can.” James Bacon, EACH Norfolk Corporate Fundraiser, said: “Without the support from businesses such as Nationwide we would not be able to continue to deliver the vital services we provide caring for children and young people with life-threatening conditions.”
Based on the success of Peerless over the past few years, they noticed a need for large format, eyecatching graphics and print which can be enhanced with a protective coating for everyday use. The new partner company is based in the same HQ as Peerless in Thetford. Coatings can be applied in clear gloss or matte finish and give full protection against cleaning with even the most stubborn chemicals. Full design is available, including graphics, photo correction and multi panel layouts for large wall art and buildings.
Norwich company expands their marketing platform at the UK Business Show. Traded Network Limited announced the expansion of their national Search Engine Marketing Platform at The Business Show held in May in London Excel. Following two years of extensive development, the platform has helped businesses in East Anglia reach out to more customers within search engines. Jonathan White, Managing Director of Traded Network, said: “These days, more than 70% of searches made on the Internet are what we call ‘Long Tail’ meaning people tend to type lengthy search phrases and questions to receive relevant answers.
JULY/AUGUST 2016
“With more than 5.4 million businesses in the UK and more than 125 million websites, the marketplace is getting overcrowded. Our platform has the ability to publish content linked to potential search phrases for all products and services in all the locations a business sells in.” One of the key issues faced by businesses is finding time to market themselves. The team at Traded Network has a solution where they write content focusing on key search terms and geographical locations as well as sharing these to the most popular social media platforms. This is
a stress-free way to get your business seen across all the major search engines.

ChamberPolicy Chamber hears from businesses in advance of EU vote. Last month saw the most significant referendum in a generation take place. Before the county headed to the polling stations, Norfolk Chamber held ‘Europe: The Business Debate’ to provide the business community with the opportunity to ask their questions to a panel of experts to help them to make a more informed decision. The audience poll showed an interesting swing from the beginning to the end of the event. At the start, 65% of delegates voted to Remain, and 35% voted to Leave. However, after they heard from the panel including Stephen Booth co-director of Open Europe and Chloe Smith Norwich North MP, the closing poll was much closer, 58% of delegates voted Remain, and 42% voted Leave.
Norfolk voted to leave the EU – so what happens now? Following the UK’s vote to leave the EU, Norfolk Chamber is working hard to support ‘business as usual’ and ensure that our members are well informed in order to drive their businesses forward and create the economic certainty needed to continue to invest and grow. The Chamber has already called on the Government for stability for markets and business confidence; clarity on the timeframes for key decisions; and action to proactively support the economy during the transition period. Using the feedback from Norfolk Chamber and the rest of the UK Chamber network, the Westminster based, British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has been holding meetings behind the scenes with ministers, including the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Sajid Javid. The BCC has been highlighting the needs of business and focussing on trade and access to markets; clarity on the future status of EU nationals within our workforces; the need to guarantee projects dependent on EU funding through to the end of their programming period; and decisions on major projects such as infrastructure, housebuilding and energy generation. Work is also been done both locally and nationally to strength the UK Chamber network’s links to our 27 European counterpart chambers to ensure that our members have the support they need to continue to trade successfully with Europe. Commenting on the future business landscape, Caroline Williams, Chief Executive of Norfolk Chamber said: “In the short term the resilient Norfolk business community will continue to do business as usual. In the medium term, is it crucial that the Norfolk Chamber and its members work together to deal with any challenges and to take advantage of opportunities during the transition period.”
JULY/AUGUST 2016
“The long term is ultimately, what we make of it. We must ensure that medium-term uncertainty gives way to long-term success – both for Chamber member businesses and for the wider economy. We have a chance to shape a whole new UK approach to global trade, to which so many of our Chamber members are deeply and passionately committed. The Norfolk Chambers’ core function – connecting and supporting businesses locally and globally – will be more relevant than ever before.”

Boswells beards go under the knife to launch year of fundraising . While most people were making their mark in polling stations on Thursday May 5, members of the claims department at Alan Boswell Group used the date to make a statement of their own. They were launching the first in the company’s year of events to raise more than £25,000 to benefit the county’s cancer patients, with a “beard-off”. Mark Davenport, claims manager and Paul Cole, senior claims adviser, bid farewell to their beloved beards in gentlemen’s grooming barbershop Swagger and Jacks where the traditional method of cut throat shaving took about 75 minutes. Claims handler Anthony Lehman also had his head shaved at the St Benedict’s Street shop, with all tonsorial services donated by owner Mark Young.
For Mr Davenport, the loss of his distinctive carefullygroomed beard is quite a talking point around the office. One sponsorship is conditional on his being clean shaven for at least six months; while at home, his 12 year old daughter was in for a surprise as she had not seen his chin since she was two years’ old. The idea for the event came from Anthony, whose mum Elaine was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. He saw a leaflet challenging men to shave off their hair and thought this would inspire his colleagues. Asked if his mum approved of the challenge, he said she loved fun and laughter so definitely. Every one of the 220 employees across Boswells’ six Norfolk and Suffolk offices, has been challenged by the directors to raise at least £100 to support Big C, Norfolk’s cancer charity, which staff voted to be its charity of the year.

The multi-award winning Enterprise Centre at the University of East Anglia picked up further accolades at the British Council for Offices (BCO) awards ceremony. It was successful in two categories; Corporate Workplace and Innovation, at the awards, which is the country’s leading forum for the discussion of issues affecting the office sector. The recognition for The Enterprise Centre is testament to the quality of working space offered within the building to the business community. A visit to all buildings was an intrinsic element of the selection process. At near 100% occupancy since opening in June 2015, a vibrant and dynamic community has already formed at the centre. The original vision to become the location of the region’s most successful green business hub is already in evidence, primarily supporting the SME and start-up community. Not solely concerned with office space, The Enterprise Centre is also a location for exhibitions, events and conferences with facilities including a rooftop terrace, 300-seater lecture theatre, seminar and meeting rooms.

Looking to grow your business? Sales and the selling process have been on the receiving end of many jokes and in some cases it’s perfectly understandable why. Pushy sales people working to targets rather than caring about the customer’s needs and wants are a bane to those unfortunate enough to encounter them and sadly there are still a lot of them about. Done well, however, the sales process connects customers with the right goods or services and helps you to grow your business. Effective sales are built on an effective sales strategy. Here are 5 points to creating one. 1. Start with what you have Do you actually know what you’re doing right now? You may well have a general idea of how your sales process works, but have you actually sat and mapped out every single step from beginning to end, including pre-sales and post-sales? If the answer to this question is no then it is your very first step and may well cause a few surprises for you.
2. Analyse what you are doing now Take an in-depth look at what you are doing now and pay close attention to each step. Get the relevant people together in a room and brainstorm what you need to do to refine the process as it is. You’re looking to reduce the cost of each sale and/or increase client satisfaction. Remember to look at options for automation and self-
service. For example, you could look at creating a process which automatically sends an e-mail confirmation upon dispatch of the order, and if the order is tracked send one again upon delivery. This ensures that the customer can alert you immediately if they have not received the delivery as expected.
3. Identify the single most profitable sales process and capitalize on it In an ideal world, sales would integrate closely with advertising and marketing so work to make your business world as close to the ideal as possible. Look at who your customers are right now and see what your most profitable client segment is. Then look at how you can align your sales process with your marketing strategy to maximize the value of this client base. This could be a good time to look at whether there are other client

segments you should be targeting but, as always, one change at a time.
4. Identify your single, most important sales activity and maximize it What is the one single sales activity which makes the most impact to your business? For now, instead of trying to eradicate any weaknesses (that will come later unless they are so serious they need immediate attention), focus on your strengths, your key strength to be precise. You’re going to work on this and nothing but this for at least 90 days.
5. Set up a plan for building on this strength, resource it and agree measurements
them meaningful. Now that you’ve identified your key sales activity, you need to take concrete steps to build upon it and maximize its potential. This means ensuring that all key people are actually buying into the new strategy rather than just paying lip service to it and carrying on doing what they had planned to do anyway. It is also important that you can show that adequate resources are in place and that any changes will not significantly impact workload. Now is the time to put your sales strategy into action and reap the rewards of your careful planning. Cracking the Consistency Code. Everyone wants to know what the magic word or spell is to make your business a success. The honest answer is actually all about you and your commitment (and sometimes just a little bit of luck). However, there is one golden (and simple) rule any business owner can use that will help drive their company to succeed, and might just bring some luck with it. The rule I like to call Consistency. What I mean by consistency is really very simple. You don’t have to be the best at something or provide a more premium, super-duper service compared to your competition. What you need to ensure is your service and your employees are always reliable and constantly delivering the same level of service, every single time, for every single client. Look at it this way, we don’t go to Pizza Express because we know we are going to get the most authentic pizza outside of Italy, we go because it’s convenient, reliable, and we know exactly what we are going to get. It’s this same thought process that you want your business to be known for. You want it to be seen as the Pizza Express of your industry – the reliable, knowledgeable, go-to and really delicious service. OK so maybe “delicious” doesn’t apply in your industry, but for the
JULY/AUGUST 2016
sake of your business’ success and maximising profits – and your own sanity – being able to get consistent, predictable, reliable results from each and every one of your employees is a must. Achieving consistency doesn’t take much but it does mean you have to be honest with yourself. You might have a sales team that seems to be getting some serious successes, but if you look closer, are these successes down to a couple of members of the team outshining the rest? Sure, you might be getting the results but will your prospects get the same quality and attention to detail regardless of who picks up the phone? Imagine the seamless and wonderful opportunities available to you if everyone was singing from the same sales sheet. Sounds like the dream doesn’t it? But it doesn’t take much for it to be a reality.
Control your wild horses Just like the wild horses on the Great Plains, your sales team can be tamed, and this is all down to discipline. If you feel motivation is dipping in your team, the discipline card always comes in handy. This isn’t about punishment, this is about addressing any negatives before they becoming problems. You’re all
trying to meet a certain standard, so if you feeling this is slipping away, reassure the team, boost morale, and make sure any issues are dealt with quickly.
A watched clock never moves Don’t forget that, for all the truth in the old adage that “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” that doesn’t mean the people building it weren’t pushing themselves to the breaking point. So have some patience with your team, appreciate what they are doing. and work out how you can make life easier for them. It might be delegating more work or helping them with their organisational skills. Just have a little patience, set a time frame, and you’ll reap the rewards sooner than you think.
When it comes to business we all want more results, more profit and more happy clients. I think the key to achieving this is consistency. It will create the reputation and identity you want, while also leading to some exciting and outstanding successes for you, your company, and your team. If you have any questions about how OpenCRM can help you achieve consistency heaven, please get in touch. I would love to hear from you. Find us at www.opencrm.co.uk or drop us a line at hello@opencrm. co.uk
May the focus be with you Make sure you staff remain on track every step of the way, don’t let them visit the dark side, and become distracted from not only the task at hand, but the overall goal of the business. That goes for you too. Remember the 20/80 rule, 20% of your tasks are responsible for 80% of your success. So that 20% is your golden ticket, if you struggle with consistency across your entire business, at least make sure that small percentage runs like a welloiled machine.

He was very knowledgeable and clearly explained the subjects on the courses in as much detail as necessary and was more than willing to go into even further detail if required. He was also able to offer numerous examples and scenarios of situations which can arise whilst exporting, which also helped to explain and clarify why certain procedures are carried out and it also helped to show how to avoid any pitfalls! Letter of Credit Service.
Education, Training and Skills – an overview of overseas opportunities. By Julie Austin International Trade Manager, Norfolk Chamber of Commerce. In the last issue I looked at overseas opportunities in construction and engineering. This time I can report on my findings from Chambers around the world about what’s happening in Education, Training and Skills. There are a wide range of opportunities available in this important sector right now and here’s my overview, based on my recent contacts. In Chile there are commercial opportunities in English Language Teaching, Private Schools and Higher Education. There is a desire to be taught in English. When it comes to Mexico they are looking for Energy Specialists as it is estimated that by 2018 they will require 135,000 Energy Specialists of which 20% will be postgraduates or have a higher education. Next I looked at South Korea. Opportunities there include English Education Services in kindergartens, provision of digital/e-learning, Summer school programmes and foundation courses in UK HE institutions. Within Higher Education there is a deregulation drive to bring more foreign branch campuses to the Incheon Free Economic Zone and the Government is offering subsidies to attract foreign academics. There are opportunities for Universities interested in offering programmes in specific industries such as engineering and energy.
When I spoke to my colleagues in Hong Kong, it was apparent that there was a growing demand for high-quality, British-style, education within the Early Childhood provision. They are actively looking for early childhood and primary education providers who aspire to establish playgroups, nursery schools, childcare centres and kindergartens. There is support from UKTI to assist UK schools in establishing a presence in Hong Kong either through official government tenders or in partnership with high-net-worth individuals and local institutions. Meanwhile, Indonesia has opportunities with vocational education, education technology, teacher training, English language training and developing experts within the marine energy sector. Finally I spoke to colleagues in the Czech Republic who have opportunities within English Language Learning in English language testing, Language Schools and Online testing. When it comes to their Schools and Universities they are looking for student recruitment, innovative classroom techniques and school trips abroad. Lastly, the opportunities in their Professional Education Sector are workshops in leadership, management and soft skills and also in consultation work. These, of course, are just a few of the opportunities for Norfolk businesses to explore. If you’re interested to learn more, do contact us. The Norfolk Chamber International Trade Team can help you make a start by putting you in touch with the relevant overseas Chamber. Call us on 01603 729706.

Four ways businesses can save tax. For more than 20 years, TaxAssist Accountants has been helping small businesses to run their affairs tax-efficiently. Below are just four ways you could reduce the amount of tax you pay. Structure your growth
Buying equipment
Your business’ structure can have a significant impact on your tax bill. Initially it may be advisable to operate as a sole trader, but as profits rise it may become beneficial to form a limited company. An accountant can help you decide which entity suits your circumstances.
Before buying business premises, machinery or equipment, make sure you seek advice. Up to 100% tax relief could be available but the type of asset, timing and value can affect how much tax relief you can obtain and when.
Household bills If you are running your business from home, you can offset some of your household bills such as heating, electricity, council tax and water rates. Even if your use is only minor for bookkeeping for example, HMRC will accept a reasonable estimate provided your claim is small and reflects your circumstances.
22
Cars & vans for the business Talk to an accountant before buying a new vehicle for the business. There are lots of considerations such as taxable benefits, VAT, capital allowances and how you claim tax relief for repair and fuel costs. Vans can be particularly tax-efficient. For a free initial consultation with your local TaxAssist Accountant, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0800 0523 555.

Insurance Loss Adjusters - what are they and why should I use one? Large commercial insurance claims are complex and time consuming. That’s why insurers appoint loss adjusters to assess the cause of the loss, investigate whether it’s covered by your policy and to suggest an appropriate settlement figure or basis of reinstatement.
n Liaise with your accountants to ascertain and itemise accurate loss of trading profits n Arrange building inspections n Negotiate interim claim payments from the insurer n Source temporary premises Typically this will cost between 6% and 8% of your total settlement, but you can buy insurance to cover the fees of a loss assessor in the event of a large loss – generally upwards of £5,000 in value.
While loss adjusters are independent, they’re paid by insurers to represent their interests. Appointing a loss assessor will mean you have an expert to represent yours, and to negotiate the most favourable interpretation of the policy and the best final settlement for your business.
Annual premiums for these policies are in the range of £175 to £500, making the insurance affordable. If you need it, you’ll recoup many years’ of premiums just from the saving you make in the amount of management time spent on dealing with the claim, let alone from the better settlement you’re likely to receive by submitting one that’s professionally prepared and negotiated.
They’ll drive the claim’s process, relieving you and your senior management of a lot of work. You can expect your loss assessor to: n Attend your premises within 24 hours to quantify the damage
n Create itemised inventories of damaged stock/equipment
n Deal with meetings and correspondence
n Source valuations for replacement products
The personal savings allowance – major changes to how bank interest is taxed Until recently, savings income such as bank and building society interest was taxed up-front at 20%.
income, although this number is possibly exaggerated by the poor rates of interest available in the current climate.
Every £100 of bank interest had £20 tax collected at source, with the remaining £80 paid to the individual. For basic-rate taxpayers this meant that no further tax was payable, but high income earners would have further tax to pay, usually via their tax return.
Individuals with very low earnings and large amounts of savings income Michael Morter, should note that they can take advantage Manager of a further tax-free allowance known as the ‘starting rate’. Tax can never be too straightforward after all!
That all changed in April 2016 with the introduction of a personal savings allowance. The allowance is available to basic-rate taxpayers at £1,000 per year, and higher-rate taxpayers at £500 per year. Additional-rate taxpayers do not get the allowance. Any savings income earned within the allowance amount is essentially free from income tax.
For many, this change will make life simpler, but those with large amounts of savings income may find they have to do a tax return where they would not have before.
At the same time, interest will now be paid without any tax being taken at source. According to official statistics the introduction of the allowance will mean 95% of people no longer have to pay tax on savings
As an aside, interest earned in a tax-free account such as an ISA will not count towards the personal savings allowance. This tax change is a good reminder to make use of ISA allowances, having discussed it with a financial adviser first, of course!

Future looks bright for port a These are encouraging times at Peel Ports Great Yarmouth as it seeks to take advantage of the massive opportunities opening up off the Norfolk coast.
For Richard Goffin, Ports Director, the next 10-15 years will see a period of sustained growth as renewables companies make the waters off Norfolk among the most productive in the UK. He said: “There is a real sense that the next few years will see exciting developments at the port as we establish ourselves as a key centre supporting the growth of the offshore wind sector.” “We are already looking 15-20 years ahead and there is a real confidence about the future, both as the offshore wind sector develops and the oil and gas industry in the southern North Sea recovers.”
24
Based in Great Yarmouth, the port has established itself as a centre of excellence in the renewable and offshore energy sectors, with the unique combination of modern deep sea facilities in the outer harbour for larger offshore vessels and long established facilities for offshore operations and maintenance in the river port. Those attractions were underlined when Great Yarmouth was selected as the port for construction and installation activities for ScottishPower Renewables’ £2.5 billion East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm. Up to £5 million will be co-invested, allowing the facility to be ready to support activities for the 102-turbine windfarm in 2018/19. The co-investment will support the construction of primary infrastructure and groundworks. This includes the delivery of yard storage and marshalling, as well as the installation of heavy lift quay facilities. Components will be preassembled quayside and then loaded onto installation vessels which will depart from Great Yarmouth to the windfarm site, 30 miles offshore. The port has extensive experience in handling vessels supporting offshore wind power generation projects and has successfully provided installation and
construction support for the Sherringham Shoal, Lincs and Scroby Sands windfarms. Richard said: “This new partnership with ScottishPower Renewables will really strengthen our long term plans to grow and diversify our offering in Great Yarmouth within the energy sector.” “We are looking forward to working with ScottishPower Renewables and helping them deliver valuable jobs and economic benefits to the region, as part of the East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm.” When complete, East Anglia ONE will have a life span of 30 plus years and is planned to provide enough renewable energy to meet the annual electricity demands of the equivalent of 500,000 homes by 2020. Construction is planned to commence in 2017 with the first turbines installed by 2019. Peel Ports Great Yarmouth has also been selected as Siemens’ assembly location and installation base, as part of works on the 56 turbine offshore Galloper Wind Farm project. A multi-million pound coinvestment in port infrastructure has been agreed to support the construction of primary infrastructure and groundworks. Siemens will supply 56 six megawatt turbines for the Galloper Wind Farm, which will have the capacity to generate enough energy for up to 336,000 homes a year. Key components such as nacelles, blades, towers and electrical modules will arrive at Great Yarmouth via the port, where they will be preassembled quayside before going offshore. Richard Goffin said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Galloper Wind Farm team to deliver this important offshore windfarm project through a co-investment in the Port estate.” “The project will accelerate planned infrastructure improvements

to Peel Ports Great Yarmouth and will benefit future windfarm developments and the wider energy sector for many years to come.” The Galloper Wind Farm is an extension of the existing and fully operational Greater Gabbard Wind Farm off the coast of Suffolk. It will be constructed by RWE on behalf of the Galloper Wind Farm Limited partners, with the offshore construction phase scheduled to commence this summer. Richard said: “Offshore wind developments will allow us to grow but we are also looking further ahead to the decommissioning of some equipment, which will present opportunities for the port in the years to come.” “There is a real momentum developing which should serve us well for years to come as we serve manufacturers and the supply chain.” The story is not all about offshore, though, and the port is committed to improving its service for Norfolk’s agricultural sector for which it plays a crucial role in handling produce and fertilisers. The millionth tonne of grain to be exported through Gleadell’s deepwater port facility at Peel Ports Great Yarmouth was recently loaded, underlining the port’s role as a
strategic outlet for grain grown on East Anglian farms. The milestone comes six years after Gleadell invested £5m to develop its export business in the port. Since then cargoes of wheat, barley, oilseed rape and pulses have departed to destinations across Europe and North Africa. Richard said: “These record breaking tonnages from Gleadell highlight the strategic importance of Great Yarmouth in exporting grain grown from East Anglian farms. “Gleadell was one of the first users of the Outer Harbour since its opening six years ago. It recognised the advantages of consolidating volume at the most easterly deepwater port in the UK capable of handling its vessels sizes.” “This strategic decision to partner with the Port of Great Yarmouth continues to play a significant part in contributing to the growth of the UK economy, the region of East Anglian and the local community.” “We do not just want to look offshore and our commitment is also to develop the way we help the agricultural industry. Anything we can do to shorten hauliers’ delivery times and need for storage will help them improve their margins and keep them competitive.”
“We are already looking 15-20 years ahead and there is a real confidence about the future, both as the offshore wind sector develops and the oil and gas industry in the southern North Sea recovers.” JULY/AUGUST 2016

Rapid growth of the digital sector offers promise. The digital sector is expanding at a rapid rate in Norfolk with many businesses springing up to help companies replace antiquated processes with quicker, more efficient ones. Recent years have seen more and more digital companies collaborating on projects and the next stage has just been taken with the launch of major initiative TechEast at a launch held the BT Tower in London. TechEast aim to create a strong voice for technology firms in the East and will link Norwich, Ipswich and Cambridge with an aim for the region to be recognised as one of the top five clusters in the UK. Caroline Williams, Chief Executive of Norfolk Chamber, said: “The increasing national significance of Norwich as a tech cluster, highlighted in the recent Tech Nation Report is very encouraging.
26
“We will continue to work with our neighbouring counties, to speak with one voice in the East to investors, business and government about unlocking
further growth across the digital tech cluster, which will underpin the great businesses and start-ups already thriving in Norfolk.” For Norfolk digital tech companies wanting to find out more and how to get involved visit either the TechEast website or email Angela Silburn on info@techeast.com

Kieran Miles, managing director of digital company KakeCo, which employs five people, said: “There has been a seismic shift in the digital sector, both in the creation of digital careers and the way companies are changing the way they work. “Businesses are using digital to enhance production processes but what is really interesting is the way customers are changing. It’s now, more than ever, possible for an individual to build a tech start-up without any external investment. You can create a great product without having to spend a fortune getting it launched. Until very recently it was normal for talented developers to drift towards the big tech hubs - London, Manchester, perhaps Cambridge. This was because they wanted to work at big companies with resources. “Now there’s a culture of wanting to work for a start-up. It’s understood that you’ll never find a faster pace of innovation and be exposed to more aspects of the industry that when you’re working at a tech start-up. The growing ability to hire freelancers is helping. “There’s also a trend for “tech incubators”. These are shared offices which bring tech entrepreneurs together with industry experts to help them in the early stages of starting a business. They help people to bounce around ideas, and take the fear out of starting a business. “The UK is already very business-friendly. It’s easy to create a company and get a

We’ve seen huge growth in demand for mobile responsive websites driven mainly by the availability of superfast 4G data networks. “In addition, the growth in online shopping has spurred demand for e-commerce applications –

There are so many brilliant businesses that will never see the light of day, because the person with the idea isn’t willing to risk their stable income to make the jump to being self-employed. Anything that we can do to encourage school-leavers and graduates to start their own businesses will help. “Each year there are more and more graduates studying computer science, and this is leading to a greater number of talented individuals for business to choose from. However, universities are still not teaching current technology. No graduate developer we’ve employed, and we’ve hired more than 60, is ever ready to just start working. They’ve never learnt current languages or the latest best practice. This is in part because everything changes so often universities can’t keep up, but also because there’s too much emphasis on theory and not enough on practical real-world experience.”

‘IP Strategy’ - Sounds impressive but what does it actually mean? Eckardt’s definition also makes this point by aligning IP entirely with commercial direction and proposes that if an IP asset cannot be utilised to sustainably achieve a corporate objective then it should not be invested in; an important point for companies to consider in order to invest their budget optimally.
In Practice
Introduction IP Strategy is a term that these days is frequently broadcast by the IP profession on websites, in knowledge articles and during seminars (something we ourselves at ip21 are guilty of!), but it’s not always clearly defined as a concept or well explained in practical terms. In this short article I’ll briefly discuss what the term ‘IP Strategy’ means to us at ip21 and hopefully be able to shed some light on how IP Strategy formulation is a valuable exercise for businesses.
Definition There is no universally accepted industry definition of IP Strategy as such, but I personally like the definition offered by Ralph Eckardt, an IP Strategy Consultant and Author: “IP Strategy is the development of a course of actions that utilizes intellectual property to enable a company to sustainably realize competitive advantage.” I like it because it uses language such as ‘actions,’ ‘utilizes’ and ‘enable’ to promote a pro-active approach to IP management. Perhaps due to the majority of IP advisors focussing purely on the immediate legal situation at hand and not the wider commercial context of their clients, or for another reason, companies will often take purely reactive decisions when it comes to filing, renewing or enforcing IP Rights. Typically these decisions are driven by responding to upcoming deadlines or new information without properly considering how each decision could affect the overall commercial strategy of the company. JULY/AUGUST 2016
In order to develop an effective IP Strategy a process of research, analysis and planning is required which carefully considers the various drivers that influence commercial IP decisions. For example: n Legal Rights Patents, Trademarks, Designs, Copyright, Licensing, Confidential Information etc. n Technology Existing Tech, Patent Landscaping, Funding availability, Collaborations etc. n Commercial Purpose, Objectives, People, Strategy, Vision, Exit etc. n Market Customers’ Tastes and Preferences, Sales, Distribution, Social Trends etc. n Industry Competitor Activity, Barriers to Entry, Opportunities, Threats etc. n Finance Budgeting, Tax Planning, Corporate Financing, IP Valuation, Disposal etc. n Geo-Political Legislation, Compliance, Culture, World Affairs (Brexit? Trump/Clinton?) Company size and evolution are also important with early stage companies often prioritising costreduction and core-business asset protection. Established companies may be more focussed on portfolio management, access to new markets and developing technology, whereas large companies are more likely to include considerations for patent landscaping, competitor analysis, compliance, valuation and global IP watching. These are some of the factors that may be relevant when planning an IP Strategy, although many IP firms will only consider the Legal factors when advising their clients.
that IP Strategy and business needs are closely aligned.
IP Strategy is a bespoke exercise that is different for every single organisation and a consultative, commercial approach is essential to ensure that IP investment is optimised to add value throughout the business. Companies that are able to work closely with their IP advisors by discussing all of the legal and nonlegal implications of IP investment, including how to maximise the commercial exploitation of their IP Assets, will have a significant competitive advantage in their field.
Why ip21 The ip21 team includes professional client account managers and expert commercial consultants as well as our top class legal team of patent, trademark and design attorneys and assistants. We use this broad range of expertise for our clients to ensure
The ip21 team have recently been awarded the ‘Most Innovative IP firm in the UK’ in the AI Legal Awards as well as ‘Excellence in Commercial IP Strategy’ in the UK Corporate Excellence Awards. To discuss any thoughts or comments in relation to this article, please do feel free to get in touch. We’d love the opportunity to meet with new companies and discuss how we could jointly create an IP Strategy to achieve their objectives. Gurney Environmental expands in Jamaica.
A memorandum of understanding has been signed between Gurney Environmental Ltd. and the National Water Commission (NWC) in Jamaica, agreeing to collaborate on establishing a demonstration Accelo-Fac® site.
32
The demonstration is designed to show how the company’s Accelo-Fac® system could be used to upgrade the existing lagoon-based systems operated by the NWC and maintain sustainable, affordable sanitation for the inhabitants of Jamaica. Of particular interest to the NWC is the Accel-o-Fac® system’s use of wind power as a primary energy source, of which Jamaica has a plentiful supply. Eliminating the reliance on electricity, which can be intermittent in some parts of the country and can cost as much as 40 cents/kWh, would be a benefit to the NWC in their aim for sustainable wastewater treatment. Gurney Environmental are working with local consultants in the country to show how the company’s AeroFac® system can be used for newbuild plants.

MIGSOLV enters 15th year in business. Data centre specialist MIGSOLV has entered its fifteenth year, marking the milestone by launching a distinctive new company identity and web site. Founder Alex Rabbetts established the company – initially known as Migration Solutions – in 2002 as the only UK consultancy practice focused exclusively on data centre environments. The company rapidly evolved to become global experts in providing data centre advice.
In 2010, the company acquired The Gatehouse as its own commercial data centre. Two purpose-built buildings on a nine-acre site in Norwich, The Gatehouse was originally developed by Norwich Union in the early 1990s as its internal computing facility. Migration Solutions stripped the buildings back to their bare walls and completely redesigned them, reopening The Gatehouse in 2011 as a highly secure commercial data centre. In doing so, the company changed its name to MIGSOLV.

Six years producing ITV Anglia Weather sponsorship idents.
Raising a toast to the Eastern Technology Alliance.
The week commencing 25 April marked the sixth consecutive year that Chamber member JMS Group have produced the Weather Sponsorship idents for ITV Anglia.
The Eastern Technology Alliance was welcomed at its official launch event, a memorable evening that saw the three companies within the Alliance, Breakwater IT, EBS Ltd. and Swains Plc, come together to entertain guests.
After a competitive pitch, they were delighted to be chosen as the production house by their new sponsor, TrustATrader.com.
It was the clients that came along to show their support for the enterprise that made the evening a real success, toasting the future of the Eastern Technology Alliance with a selection of wines and canapes, whilst taking in the impressive views from the Weston Room at Norwich Cathedral.
From the creative concepts suggested, the client chose ‘Whatever The Weather’, as it conveys reliability and trustworthiness. In a series of idents viewers, see a friendly tradesman making house calls throughout the seasons, battling the elements to arrive at your door.
To add a dash more entertainment to the traditional tasting event, the wine experts HarperWells were on hand to challenge quests with a quiz as they sampled wines. Quiz winner Ben Shread, from Inspiration Trust, received a voucher for a meal for 2 at Roger Hickman’s restaurant.
Creating all of the different seasons called for some interesting special effects, from snow to autumn leaves to a rain machine (and one very soggy actor). The visuals were supported not only by shooting on the Arri Amira but also through careful soundtrack development, including crunching snow and blowing wind. The first ident, ‘Spring’, was broadcast on ITV Anglia from April 2010.

‘Blue flag’ for Norfolk and Suffolk business advisers . 34
The New Anglia Growth Hub has become the first and only organisation in the country to have secured a coveted business adviser accreditation – the equivalent of a blue flag in this sector. The Level 7 Diploma in Professional Business and Enterprise Support is the equivalent of a Master’s degree on the qualification and credit framework scale and it means business owners across the two counties can feel safe in the knowledge that the support they are receiving has been rigorously examined and is of the highest quality available. The award is governed by the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative (SFEDI), which sets the
standard for business support services and is the exemplar standard for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. John Stenhouse, who fronts the New Anglia Growth Hub said the fact that every single one of his business advisers had achieved Level 7 “was clear proof not only of their nine months of study and dedication, but their total commitment to always providing the best approach to advising businesses.” He added: “The Growth Hub will continue to have a major influence in helping our growing businesses access the right kind of financial and practical support.”
Job seeking is going mobile.
Craig Cordle, accountancy recruiter at Pure’s Ipswich office, delivered the session to 35 Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) students. The event was organised to help ensure the students understood how they could make maximum use of their qualifications and to give them an overview of the region’s current financial job market. The students were also given advice on how they could stand out against other candidates when competing for job roles. Topics discussed included CV structure and content, interview preparation, interview skills and what to expect from potential personality profiling or psychometric tests. Craig said: “Accountancy and financial services are two of Pure’s key specialisms and we are keen to help develop and support the region’s up-and-coming talent in these areas.”
If your business is looking to recruit new talent or develop a database of candidates, the smartphone may be the answer. In recent years, the smartphone has taken over as the number one device we use for our Internet activity. We use smartphones to browse social media, watch videos and now we can apply for jobs. According to techradar.com, “twenty-eight percent of job seekers said they searched for jobs on mobile devices.” So what does this mean for you- a business owner or employer? Well, if your business has an online presence, you need to ensure that it is also mobile optimised. Simply, this means that your website translates well to smartphones and is easy to navigate. According to Career Builder, 65% of workers who search for jobs via mobile devices will leave a website if it isn’t mobile optimised. So it is in your best interests to make sure your website is mobile-friendly.
Students studying for accountancy qualifications at the Colchester Institute were given a free career advice session from Pure.
Things to keep in mind: n Ensure that your company has an online presence, which spans at least two social media websites. n Make sure your website is mobile-friendly. n Mobile application forms should only take a potential candidate 15 mins to complete

The Women’s Leadership Programme was first developed by professional recruitment specialists Pure, in conjunction with strategic HR consultancy People & Performance Ltd, in 2014 and more than 30 organisations across the region have already participated. The latest graduates to complete the programme are from both public and private sector organisations in the region including Suffolk-based Events under Canvas, Buckles Solicitors based in Peterborough and Victory Housing Trust based in Norfolk. The job roles of those graduating ranged from Learning and Development Managers through to Head of Finance. The seven graduates will now join a growing alumni network, developing across the East of England, of previous programme graduates and employer sponsors. This will provide a great forum for them to continue to build their leadership skills, boost their confidence and to develop a network of like-minded professionals. A special graduation event took place at Paddocks House in Newmarket where the delegates and alumni network heard from guest speaker Steve Turpie, business transformation expert and founder of Bright Stars charity speak about the power of vulnerability in leadership.
Peter has led EFA Framework, BSF, Diocesan and Independent sector school projects with a number of notable contractors, covering traditional and D&B procurement and both new-build and refurbishment work, including the Harpley PRU in Stepney Green, recipient of two BCSE national design awards. Previous experience in other sectors has been invaluable to the ongoing diversification of work in the London studio, including a number of office projects for the London Borough of Islington, an office project in India, and commissions at several London teaching hospitals. Peter said: “Over the past few years, the Practice has gone from strength to strength. I am very proud

MembersNews Gold at ‘The Roses’ for Norwich Creative Agency osbornenash .
Norfolk leads the way in supporting local producers. The latest figures from YouGov show that Norfolk is leading the way in supporting local producers, with a whopping 42% of respondents saying they had bought local produce in the last week. This compares to a national figure of only 25%, with Suffolk coming in at 36% and Essex at 28%. The research, commissioned by the East of England Co-op, shows that whilst only 52% of Brits think it is important that they buy locally sourced produce* (down from 79% in 2015) a fantastic 64% of Norfolk respondents think it is important.

Champagne corks have been popping at Norwich creative agency osbornenash as it was announced that the team had won its first prestigious The Drum Roses Creative Award. At an awards ceremony, held at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly, osbornenash were awarded gold in the corporate identity category, beating international branding agency, Elmwood. The winning campaign was created for Norwich based D&F McCarthy, East Anglia’s leading supplier of fresh fruit and vegetables. ‘Pick Local’ is a subsidiary brand devised to satisfy the demand for locally sourced produce to the retail market. The ‘seal of approval’ is an approachable mark that gestures perfection in its pose and reveals an apple formed by negative space. Packaging is kept minimal to work in harmony with the simple labelling system. These combined evoke freshness, a reduced manufactured process and emphasise the provenance of the individual products. Carole Osborne, managing director of osbornenash, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to win our first Roses Creative Award and I’m delighted that the team working on the account have been given the recognition they deserve.”
However, there is still much to do; only 27% of those in Norfolk would expect to buy local produce in a convenience store. The East of England Co-op is keen to highlight that it is a strong supporter of
local producers, with over 2,000 locally sourced products available in their stores and an impressive £11 million having been ploughed back into the local economy last year.

Chamber role goes hand in hand with day job. But, seriously, when he got here, this was an informative and useful meeting. What’s more, bringing such a high profile politician to Norfolk is testament to the lobbying and ‘pulling power’ of the Norfolk Chamber. You won’t be surprised to learn that much of my role within the Chamber involves working with the finance team. I chair the monthly Audit Committee meeting, and right now we have more sessions coming up as we prepare for our annual audit, prior to the AGM. As a Chamber we take our corporate governance very seriously. We have a commercial attitude within a non-profit organisation. I see that as vital. After all, we’re managing our members’ subscriptions and it’s crucial that we maximise how they are used to deliver the best benefits for our members. As we repeatedly, and unashamedly say, ‘We Are Our Members’.
In this issue we ask Simon Watson, Partner at Lovewell Blake LLP, Chamber Board Member and Hon. Treasurer of Norfolk Chamber of Commerce for his ‘View from the Board’. He tells us what’s been, and what is, going on. For me, one of the most significant recent events was having Cabinet Minister Greg Hands MP here in Norwich, with local MP Chloe Smith, giving Chamber members and local businesses the chance to interact with the man who is second only to the Chancellor in
forming policy on where and how government money gets spent. Infrastructure and transport are always high on Norfolk’s agenda, so I think a point was well made (and you’ll see the irony) when Mr Hand’s train from London to Norwich was cancelled!
I was particularly pleased to attend one external meeting recently because it was at my old school! I’m absolutely passionate about the links between business and education. The work we do within the Chamber in this area is so important. Spending some time with students, listening to their points of view, and helping them see what they need to do as they approach the world of work is always a pleasure; in my old school it was great! Investing in Young People is something I’m close to in my ‘day job’ as well. At Lovewell Blake we
take on up to 20 trainees a year. We wear our Investment in Young People badge with pride. My job and my Chamber roles overlap in another way. I look after a wide range of SME clients, which means I’m tuned in to their worries and issues. Often I’m able to tell them that Chamber membership could prove very useful to them as the services and advice we provide are so comprehensive. For example, talking recently with our new Police and Crime Commissioner, Lorne Green, I was able not only to tell him that cyber crime is one of local businesses major worries, but that the Chamber are already addressing it. (In fact the previous issue of Norfolk Voice carried several informative articles on the subject). I spend a lot of time working closely with Caroline Williams, our Chamber’s Chief Executive, helping to support our outstanding team, and I’m involved in recruitment as well. All of this means that there is often Chamber business to discuss at the start, or end, - and sometimes both - of the day. It’s not a problem for me. In fact the links between being a Partner in a busy local business and having a seat on the Chamber Board are what makes it work. It’s all about business. And as you’ll hear us say quite a bit this year - at the Chamber we’ve been Committed to Business since 1896!
Kinki Boutique get ahead with a bespoke digital installation. With the perfect location placed upon one of Norwich’s busiest shopping streets; this screen is sure to attract passers-by.

LastWord Name: Calum Colquhoun Position: General Manager Company: QHotels’ Dunston Hall Calum Colquhoun was appointed as General Manager of Dunston Hall in September 2015, ahead of a planned £2m refurbishment programme to bring the hotel back to its former glory. Calum moved back to Norfolk for the second time in January 2014, commencing his role at Dunston Hall shortly after he got married in August 2015. Set in 150 acres of picturesque wooded parkland, Dunston Hall boasts 169 bedrooms and offers guests 11 conference and events spaces, idyllic surroundings for team building activities and a range of golf and spa facilities.
46
Calum’s appointment at the hotel follows over 30 years in the hotel industry, including roles as General Manager at QHotels’ Ashford International Hotel, General Manager at De Vere Daresbury Park Hotel and Regional General Manager at Macdonald Hotels in Shropshire/Cheshire.
What was your first job and what was the pay packet? I was a dishwasher and then a waiter on £1.00 an hour. This was the first hotel that I worked in - I left the same hotel at 19 years old as Restaurant Manager before heading to London. What do you always take with you to work? I am a creature of habit and to be honest it’s more about what I forget to take if I ever go even slightly out of routine….not helpful! What is the biggest challenge facing your business? This is the most complex business I have ever been involved in – it is a genuine ‘Resort Hotel’ and is so busy in so many different
JULY/AUGUST 2016
market segments – the challenge is to constantly adapt the service standards and offering to suit the needs of each type of guest as they all need something slightly different. If you were Prime Minister, what one thing would you change to help business? I find it easy to make decisions for the good of the business – but I suspect I’d be a little too autocratic to take on the PM role… much as it appeals! What can you see from your office window? I see a very beautiful, sculpted golf course and gardens that are beginning to look as grand as they did in years gone by – I am very fortunate to be here.
If you could do another job, what would it be? There is no job that has the level of intensity, job satisfaction and drive that this one has. I tried once to do something different…..it didn’t come close. As a business person, what are your three main qualities? Team builder, communicator – and driven to make change and succeed. What was your biggest mistake in business? I nearly lost my first GM position by allowing myself to be distracted by things that were not a priority for the business – would never let that happen again.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? Get up early. Get the right people around you - and give them the support, tools and knowledge to do their jobs well. What do you admire most in business? Progress – wherever you’re at, there always must be progress. Every day, every week, every year. If you could come back as an animal in your next life, what would it be and why? I’d like to be a gun dog – rarely will you see a more fulfilled and happy animal.
