Be part of history
Everyone who visits Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel, be it for business or for pleasure, has the opportunity to experience outstanding service, fine cuisine and a wide range of facilities designed to make their stay as enjoyable as possible. But, unlike many other leading hotels around the world, this particular establishment also gives visitors the chance to play a part in history and add their own memories to a tale dating back more than 300 years. The story of Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel, which now spans four centuries, starts with George and Eleanor Crosier, who originally built the property in 1693 as a home for themselves and their five daughters. The Crosiers lived a happy, but fairly uneventful, life at Redworth House, as it was originally known, until their grandson Robert fell in love with an heiress less than half his age. Despite strong disapproval from the family, 50-year-old Robert married his young love Dorothy, then aged 22, and was promptly disowned from the Crosier fold. The couple returned in 1744 when Robert used his wife’s money to purchase Redworth House from his relatives and quickly began changing the property with a series of internal and decorative

improvements – efforts which could not unfortunately stop scandal from following him back to the family home. In 1769 Robert forced his daughter Jane, then aged 17, to marry her cousin Crosier in an effort to cement the family line. Despite being deeply unhappy, Jane was a dutiful wife and within 16 years had given Crosier 11 children, before mysteriously disappearing in 1800. While Crosier could never be formally tied to Jane’s disappearance, the adulterer did move in with his mistress a short while later and many believed that justice had finally been served when, after an evening of sordid debauchery, he was thrown from his horse and froze to death alone in 1863. After Crosier’s untimely, if somewhat poetic demise, Redworth House was inherited by his second son Robert Surtees, who soon began making his mark on the building with the addition of the Jacobean-style, spiral, stone staircase and galleried Baronial Hall which still exist today. It was also Robert who renamed the property Redworth Hall, which he felt was more befitting of his home’s grand new style. After playing host to the Surtees family for several years, Redworth Hall enjoyed a series of incarnations, including serving as a residential school for ‘naughty boys,’ and providing refuge for the grandson of the murdered Czar, Prince Alexander, who fled his homeland during the First World War. Redworth Hall was taken over by the
Paramount Group of hotels - now known as Barceló Hotels and Resorts - in 1999, with a £1million refurbishment helping transform it into the beautiful property that stands today. While many new additions, including a stunning spa and restaurant, have helped shape Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel into a modern business and leisure destination, Barceló has been keen to ensure much of its rich history remains intact, with elements such as the majestic summer house, built by Major Surtees as a tribute to his wife in the 1930s, still taking pride of place. Legend has it that echoes of Redworth Hall’s intriguing past can also be found among the ghosts that wander its hallowed hallways, including the figure of a heartbroken young woman, who is believed to have thrown herself from the top of the building’s Jacobean tower generations ago and now wanders the rooms at the front of the hall searching for her lost love. The laughter and crying of young children has also been reported coming from inside the Great Hall, with many believing it to be the voices of the Surtees children, one of whom was deemed ”ill of mind” and spent much of its life chained to one of the room’s large fireplaces. Whatever the truth in these stories, it is clear that Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s unique history helps make it a venue to remember and one which will undoubtedly play a role in the lives of many visitors to come. www.barcelo-hotels.co.uk

Every occasion is a special one, be it a wedding, birthday or naming day, but what better way to make it even more memorable than to hold your celebration in a 300-year-old manor house, surrounded by 150 acres of landscaped gardens and enchanting woodlands? From the moment you venture up Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s stunning driveway it’s easy to see why this beautiful building has become one of the most popular occasion venues in the North East. Every budding bride, proud parent, party planner and hopeful host who visits this four star property is greeted with a wide range of potential settings in which to hold their event, with private rooms available to cater for anywhere between 10 and 300 guests. Each of Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s four function rooms has its own sense of grandeur and character, with the biggest – the Surtees Suite – offering large windows overlooking the grounds, as well as a private bar and lounge area where guests can mingle and relax. The Surtees Suite, which is licensed for civil ceremonies, can cater for up to 200 guests during the ceremony itself, with capacity for an additional 30 guests for a wedding breakfast or dinner dance
and 100 guests (300 total) for a buffet/ banquet-style evening celebration.
capable of hosting up to 100 guests for a civil ceremony, banquet or buffet.
Slightly smaller gatherings, involving up to 220 guests for a buffet or 150 for a civil ceremony, will find a warm and welcoming home in the hotel’s Prince Bishop Suite, which is decorated in light gold, cream and burgundy and adorned with a sumptuous array of rich textiles and flowing fabrics.
The smallest of Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s function rooms – the Kelvington Suite – is also decorated in a traditional style, with large windows offering lots of natural light, as well as stunning views across the hotel’s courtyard.
As well as the opportunity for visitors to enjoy a celebratory meal in its AA Rosette 1744 Restaurant, more details of which are included in the food pages of this magazine, Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel also has two private options for more intimate functions. These include the historic Great Hall, which dates back to 1744 and retains much of its traditional character through its polished wooden floors, oak panelling and two original stone fireplaces. The hall can be accessed via the hotel or through its own private entrance and is
In line with its three counterparts, the Kelvington is licensed for civil ceremonies and can accommodate up to 40 guests for the ceremony itself or up to 50 for a reception depending on the desired room layout. Whatever your reason for getting together, don’t forget there’s also the option to extend the celebration outside the function room, with an overnight stay in one of Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s bedrooms or suites - perfect for those who intend on having a late night or toasting the occasion with several glasses of Champagne.
Many of the hotel’s wedding packages include an overnight stay for the bride and groom, as well as discounted overnight rates for all guests, with similar arrangements available for all manner of other events. Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s specialist events team is on hand to offer guidance during the planning of every function and is happy to work with the organiser to choose the perfect package or create something that is tailored specifically to them. This can include everything from supplying printed name cards and table plans, to putting together the ideal buffet and helping source photographers, cake makers and entertainers. Sleep in style

For many people, spending the night in a hotel is one of life’s simple pleasures, offering the opportunity to relax and unwind without the pressures of mundane household chores. But, thanks to its outstanding location and amazing facilities, not least its beautiful array of bedrooms and suites, a night at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel is more than just a break from the washing up – it’s a chance to sleep soundly in comfort and style. Since being transformed into a premium hotel by Barceló Hotels and Resorts more than a decade ago, considerable time and money has been spent on ensuring the bedchambers at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel provide a stunning sanctuary for overnight visitors, whether they are travelling alone, as a couple, or as part of a family or group. There is a total of 143 rooms to choose from, each equipped with everything you’d expect from a hotel of this standing, including complimentary toiletries and refreshments, internet access and 24-hour room service.

As well as these standard elements each category of room also boasts unique features, including the general guest bedrooms, which are decorated in a modern design along with traditional accents that pay homage to the venue’s Jacobean history.
These particular bedrooms, which are available in single, twin, double and family styles, are located in the main building at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel and offer stunning views of the courtyard or surrounding woodlands. Those who wish to make their stay an even more relaxing affair, can also opt to spend the night in one of the hotel’s 43 deluxe spa rooms, which were added by Barceló in 2007. These double rooms, which are decorated in contemporary and calming shades, come well-equipped with a wide range of state-of-the-art gadgetry, including atmospheric lighting, flat screen TVs and air conditioning, as well as an upgraded en-suite bathroom complete with spa bath and separate multi-jet shower. Guests seeking a stay of luxury back in the main hall would be well advised to choose one of the hotel’s superior deluxe double bedrooms, which benefit from their own feature bathroom, including spa, pool or corner bath and walk-in shower. These eight rooms, which retain many features of the original Redworth House such as feature windows, from which
guests can enjoy stunning views across the hotel’s extensive gardens, also offer an array of modern luxuries including a CD player and a large double, king or four poster bed. For those who really wish to make the most of their stay at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel, the hotel also houses three large suites with separate lounge areas and luxurious spa baths. These courtyard or woodland-view suites, which include both a sofa and dining table, are perfect for anyone requiring extra space, enjoying an extended break or who simply wants to make their stay as memorable as possible, such as a bride and groom. Whatever your purpose for visiting and whichever room you choose as your base for the night, don’t forget to also make the most of Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s other amenities, including the spa and award-winning restaurant, more details of which can be found in the following pages of this magazine or online at www.barcelo-hotels.co.uk, where you can also find further descriptions and photos of its beautiful bedrooms.

Cooking up a treat It can be said that the true quality of any hotel is reflected not just in its setting and scope of amenities but in the attitude and experience of its workforce. From the senior management to front of house and those working behind the scenes, Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel is staffed by a group of dedicated and passionate people, who pride themselves on delivering the best possible service at all times. Nowhere is this more evident than in the hotel’s fast moving kitchen, led by head chef Richard Chilver. Richard, originally from Harrogate, has worked at some of the best hotels and restaurants across the North East and Yorkshire and originally came to Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel in 2005. After two years at the Redworth stove he left to hone his skills and start a family before returning earlier this year to head up the hotel’s expanding culinary operation. “Over the last 16 years I have worked at all manner of hotels, restaurants and bistros and have catered for gatherings of all sizes from intimate dinners for
two to the large scale events I managed at The Sage Gateshead,” Richard said. “Nowhere have I felt more at home though than at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel, which is why I jumped at the opportunity to return.” Richard and his team of nine experienced chefs are currently responsible for every aspect of Barceló Redworth Hall’s catering services, from the food served in the award-winning Restaurant 1744, to the large-scale function buffets and wedding breakfasts they are required to deliver on a regular basis.
a daily basis, so our food really needs to be of a high and consistent standard, with options that appeal to as wide an audience as humanly possible,” he said. “The traditional-style dishes with a twist, which are served in Restaurant 1744, are constantly updated to encourage repeat visits and make the most of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, while the function, dinner and buffet menus are designed to cater for a variety of tastes, while still offering mouth-watering flavours and a touch of flair.
The 32-year-old takes a particularly hands-on approach, personally overseeing every dish that leaves the kitchen and is now focussed on putting Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel firmly on the map for culinary excellence.
”It is this amazing scope and versatility that makes working at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel such an enjoyable challenge and helps ensure my team and I remain as passionate and demanding about the food we serve, as the wide range of diners we cater for are.”

Blooming lovely
Flower pic by Nattrass Flowers - Stan Seaton Photography
When it comes to planning a wedding, civil ceremony or reception, one of the biggest considerations in terms of both style and money is undoubtedly the flowers. Not only do they add a hint of colour and a sense of occasion to the big day, but they also offer couples the opportunity to convey personal messages that represent their relationship and their love for one another. This type of symbolism has played an important part in matrimony for hundreds of years, with brides in ancient times initially carrying bouquets or wearing garlands made of spices and herbs such as garlic and dill, in an attempt to ward off evil spirits that might curse the union. Fresh blooms became more commonplace in the 1800s, when the Victorians
realised that the ‘language of flowers’ could add a personal and poignant touch to their big day. At that time the flowers used for both venue decoration and the bridal bouquet were chosen specifically for the messages they were believed to convey, with red carnations and chrysanthemums being particularly popular as a symbol of love. Though less of a priority for modern brides, the meaning of flowers does continue to play a role in many marriages, with red and white roses still remaining a common choice to represent unity.
Over the past few decades however the floral selection procedure has centred more on the wedding theme or colour scheme than on the blooms’ underlying meanings, with most couples now opting simply for the flowers they prefer or can afford. Those who find themselves on a strict budget are increasingly finding their choices steered by which flowers are in season at the time of their celebration and which can create the most notable impact in the least quantity or at the lowest cost. Having to take these issues into account doesn’t necessarily mean having to compromise though, and any good
florist should be able to advise on what will work most effectively within your price range. It’s important when looking at flowers not to be swayed too much by their impact, as this can lead to costs spiralling rapidly out of control. The best way to avoid this is to have a clear idea in mind at the outset as to how many arrangements you will need and to think creatively about what you will be able to use them for. Don’t forget that flowers can be moved throughout your celebration, from the ceremony location to the reception, with many able to serve a dual purpose as decorations or a top table centrepiece. www.barcelo-hotels.co.uk

Favours for all Picking the perfect wedding favours can put added pressure on any couple in the run up to their special day, with many struggling to come up with creative ideas or find a way to fit them in financially. But don’t feel you have to blow your budget or wrack your brain for hours to come up with something your guests will love – after all this is meant merely as a token of appreciation and no-one expects to be going home from your wedding with a personal yacht. While the traditional sugared almonds wrapped in organza are taking a well earned rest from most wedding celebrations after centuries of popularity, foodie favours do remain among the most common thanks to their wide availability and relatively low costs. Couples who prefer to offer their guests a more lasting thank you will find a variety of keepsakes, such as candleholders, shot glasses and mini photo frames, can now be purchased from a variety of high street retailers and independents, as well as a host of wedding favour specialists that operate online. Those who wish to share the love even further, however, can opt for a charitable favour such as a donation or badge for their favourite cause or offer each of their guests a lottery ticket or scratchcard - and, who knows, there may be more than one reason to celebrate on your special day. now choose a sponge filling, decorated in a colour scheme or theme that is tailored to them, such as a hobby they share or a place they love to visit.
One area in which couples have excelled at displaying their creativity, particularly in the present day, is in the design and taste of the humble wedding cake.
It is also increasingly common to offer a cake with a different filling in each layer or to forgo the traditional format all together in favour of something much easier to serve, such as a tower of cupcakes or a pyramid of profiteroles.
What originally began in the Roman Empire as a loaf of bread broken over the bride’s head, has now become an edible centrepiece of all modern marriages, the size and style of which is limited only by the happy couple’s budget and imagination. While some do still opt for the traditional 19th century form of tiered fruit cake, complete with white icing and bride and groom ornament, the majority
Whatever their preference, couples are advised to think carefully about their cake and see it not just as a sweet treat for their family and friends, but as a likely focal point of their special day – after all the cutting of the cake still plays a key role in most celebrations and it’s something your guests are likely to remember for years to come.

When it comes to a wedding there are few things more thoughtfully considered or widely remarked upon than the dress.
Brides-to-be can spend weeks, months or even years debating what to wear on their special day, with the chosen gown often being the element most talked about before, during and after the celebration. The pressure to find the perfect frock has been felt by brides across the ages, with early wedding dresses being viewed not just as an interpretation of the bride’s personal style but as a reflection of her family’s social standing, too. Traditionally, brides from a wealthy background would be expected to wear something that was at the height of the period’s fashion and style, made from the richest and boldest fabrics money could buy, such as velvet and fur. Those on a tighter budget would wear a gown passed down through generations or simply dress in their Sunday best. The choices available to a modern bride are thankfully much more extensive,
with the rise of independent bridal boutiques, online retailers, personal designers and high street stores, ensuring there is something available to suit every taste and budget. Whether you opt for off-the-peg or tailor made, there are now very few limitations in choosing the shape, size and even colour of your wedding dress, with every bride being given the chance to wear something that makes her look and feel at her absolute best.
go for a full colour gown, such as the red variations favoured in India and China. The shape of the dress can also be as subtle or as striking as each bride prefers, from the eye-catching fairytalestyle, with a fitted bodice and largehooped or multi-layered skirt, to the elegant and tailored look of a fitted column or fishtail gown.
White, which first came to prominence for weddings in the 1800s, still remains a popular colour choice, though many modern brides now prefer to opt for one of the so-called ‘wedding whites,’ such as ivory or cream, which tend to be more flattering to most complexions.
Brides-to-be are advised to try on as many styles as possible when shopping for the perfect dress and remember what looks good on the hanger, in your mind or in the pages of a bridal magazine might not necessarily suit your colouring or figure, so don’t feel tempted to compromise or put too much pressure on yourself to change your shape in the run up to the big day.
Those who would like to add a touch of colour can do so with added embellishments such as a ribbon sash or shaded beads, while the more daring can
If there are areas of your body you are worried about though, don’t forget that most dresses can be adapted or accessorised to accentuate your best
features and conceal any problem areas. Cap sleeves and boleros for example, are a great way of stylishly covering the tops of the arms. When selecting a wedding dress it is also important to consider the style, location and season of the wedding day – after all you may not want to be laced into a big, Cinderella gown if you plan to marry outside on the hottest day of the year and you may want to consider adding a shrug or tailored coat if you hope to have pictures taken outside in the winter snow. Above all, it is important that the wedding dress you choose is a reflection of you and your personal style. It is not an outfit you want to regret simply because you felt pressure to stick to tradition or please someone else. So, dream big, enjoy the search and look forward to a day wearing the gown both you and your guests will remember for many years to come. www.barcelo-hotels.co.uk

Say it with pictures They say a picture is worth a thousand words and nowhere is that more evident than in the world of wedding photography.
for a beautiful reminder of your big day either. In fact good quality wedding photography is often more about the planning than it is about the cost.
Often far more enduring and reliable than your own memories and the anecdotes of those who attend, good quality images can capture the events and emotions of your special day in a way which current and future generations can share and enjoy.
The main thing is to find the right photographer, one who not only fits your budget, but can really understand the style of your wedding and how it should be reflected in the photos they take.
Perhaps it’s no surprise then that photography and videography are among the biggest expenses in many modern weddings – with couples understandably clamouring to book the best photographer they can find and afford.
The best way to do that is to talk to as many potential photographers as possible and to seek recommendations from your wedding suppliers, family and friends. Try to go with a specialist wedding photographer/videographer wherever possible and don’t be afraid to ask for examples of their recent work.
While this isn’t an area you should immediately scrimp on, you shouldn’t feel pressured into shelling out thousands
Once you and your partner have narrowed down your choices, it’s important to meet with each
photographer in person, just to make sure their personality fits with yours and that there’ll be no issues working with them in the run up to the wedding or on the day itself. Be sure to have an open and frank discussion about the photographs you are expecting, including whether they are to be formal or informal, full colour or black and white and whether you want staged shots or a mix of pose-free images taken throughout the day. Get everything you agree on, particularly the timings of the event, the quantity of images required and the final costings, in writing, in advance, so there are no nasty surprises when you receive your pictures or the bill. If your photographer/videographer hasn’t worked at your wedding venue before, it
is well worth taking a tour with them in the run-up to the event and pinpointing any key areas in which pictures can be taken. This will help ensure you get the best of the location, minimise the time spent wandering around on your big day and offer the opportunity to identify stand-by locations inside, for example, if the weather doesn’t play ball. If you’re using a photographer and videographer from separate firms it could also give them the opportunity to meet for the first time and perhaps have a discussion about what they are planning for your wedding and how they can work together to make the most of the audiovisual opportunities on the day. Once that’s done you can simply sit back, relax and enjoy your celebration, knowing that you will soon have a lasting reminder for all to enjoy. www.barcelo-hotels.co.uk

Comprehensive conference, competitive price Corporate events are a regular occurrence at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel, from small meetings and staff training days, to large scale product launches and business dinners – the venue’s function rooms and suites have welcomed them all. In Spring 2011, the hotel played host to the annual conference of the University Print Managers Group (UPMG), attended by more than 100 group members from across the UK. The event featured three days of scheduled sessions and social activities, each designed to help attendees learn about the latest developments in their sector and to share best practice. UPMG administrator Roy Stares was responsible for organising the conference and said he couldn’t have been more
pleased with the service he received at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel. “We have held our annual conference at various Barceló hotels in the past and have always been extremely happy with the results,” he said. “When looking for a new location this year, Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel came up with the most comprehensive events package at the most competitive price, so it really was an obvious choice.” Delegates travelled from as far afield as Aberdeen and Plymouth to attend the 2011 UPMG conference, with all enjoying the hotel’s 24 hour package, including breakfast, dinner, overnight accommodation and full use of Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel’s health centre and spa.
UPMG - by Martin Parker photography
“From the food, to the location and the quality of the function rooms and bedrooms, not one of our attendees had a negative word to say about Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel,” said Roy. “Our delegates’ partners were particularly happy as they got to relax in the spa while we were hard at work.” Roy, who is based in Luton, visited the hotel three times in preparation for the UPMG conference, but believes it would have been just as easy to plan the event from a distance.
“The staff at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel are all very friendly and professional, with the General Manager in particular being extremely hands-on,” he said. “Any questions or requests I had, not just in the run up to the conference but during the event itself, were dealt with promptly and efficiently, with the venue and the staff proving completely flexible to our needs. “I highly recommend Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel to anyone planning a corporate event.”
The stress free way to say “I do” Life in the police force can be stressful at the best of times, so it’s no surprise that serving officers David and Beverley Greenwell wanted to make planning their wedding as easy as possible – a key factor behind them choosing Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel. “We initially narrowed down our choice of venue to a possible five,” said David, “but after visiting Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel we knew immediately it was the one. The staff were so friendly and the packages they offered us were not only comprehensive, but offered such great value for money, that we really couldn’t imagine going anywhere else.” After exchanging vows at a nearby church, David, Beverley and their 98 guests travelled to Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel for their daytime reception, which included numerous photograph
opportunities and a formal, three course wedding breakfast in the Great Hall. “The food at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel is unbelievable,” said David. “It was hard initially to decide what dishes to serve because there’s so much choice, but the staff were great in helping us put a menu together and even offered us a full tasting session before the big day so we knew in advance how good it was going to be. ”All of our guests were extremely happy with their meal, with many remarking how grand it felt to be enjoying such a mouth-watering dinner in the Great Hall. The setting was so great in fact, that I don’t think our photographer stopped snapping for the whole day.” An additional 32 people joined David and Beverley for their evening celebration at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel, with a
total of 130 guests enjoying a relaxed, hog roast supper and many choosing to extend their visit overnight. “The wedding team at the hotel were fantastic in helping us source suppliers, not just for the hog roast but for other elements of the day as well. It really took a lot of pressure off and paved the way to a smooth wedding day. “The fact that practically all our guests were able to stay over also added to the relaxed feeling, with the chance for us all to share stories about the wedding over breakfast really capping off a fantastic day. “In the build up to the wedding everyone kept telling us that it would be one of the most stressful experiences of our adult life. We kept waiting for this stress to kick in throughout the planning

process but, thanks to the support of the staff at Barceló Redworth Hall Hotel, it never did and we couldn’t have asked for anything more.” www.barcelo-hotels.co.uk
