Worcester is not only a beautiful historic city but it is the perfect location for many premier sporting activities. Set in the peaceful Worcestershire countryside, with easy access to the M5 motorway and less than an hour from Birmingham, the city offers first class venues for first class sport.

Like Rugby – Love Worcester Warriors Sixways Stadium, home to Rugby’s Aviva Premiership Division Worcester Warriors. Who can come to Worcester in the Rugby season and go to Sixways? The West Stand is the hub of activity for fans on match days with the Clubhouse bar and other facilities and aswell as this the newer South Stand offers an unrivalled matchday experience as the city faces other great teams from across the country. The planned multi-million pound development of the stadium’s East Stand will create the best development in club rugby across Europe with unparalleled views of the action and capacity for 12,000 spectators. The stand will also incorporate the new David Lloyd Health and Racquet Club and with 1000 on-site car parking spaces as well as Park & Ride facilities it can’t fail to be a matchday favourite. The Warriors complex also hosts an ever-increasing number of events and with its prime location just off junction 6 of the M5 motorway, getting there from anywhere in the country is hassle-free. Buy tickets for pop concerts, inspirational speakers or special dinners on the Club’s calendar of events, or use its spectacular facilities to host your own conference (up to 1000 guests), business meeting or wedding reception. Think Cricket – Think Worcestershire County Cricket County cricket started in Worcestershire in 1865 and the New Road ground, considered to be the most picturesque cricket ground in the country with its views across the River Severn to the city’s beautiful Cathedral, has been the home ground of Worcestershire County Cricket Club ever since. As the club is one of the 18 major county clubs in England and Wales, visitors to the ground are assured of seeing first class county, 20:20 and

international cricket. This year an exciting addition to the squad will be Australian Test match opener, Phil Hughes, and his signing will be an exciting addition to the club for the 2012 season. The addition of the Graeme Hick Stand a couple of years ago has extended the hospitality and conferencing facilities considerably, and with the club soon to undergo the next major phase of its development with new stands, hospitality boxes and hotel, it will offer exceptional state-of-the-art facilities. Is there anywhere in England that could offer you a better experience? The Sport of Kings at Worcester Racecourse With its picturesque tree-lined track and unique position nestling on the banks of the River Severn, Worcester Racecourse offers a great day out for all the family. Take advantage of the themed racedays which include Family Fun Days, Ladies’ Day, Senior Citizens’ Special Package Day and Irish Night. Accompanied under 18s are admitted free to the enclosures, making a great family day out even more affordable. Enjoy the magnificent views from the Severn Restaurant which is placed perfectly between the finishing straight and the River Severn and don’t forget that if you require a venue for your corporate entertaining you will find that the luxury executive boxes will create the perfect impression for your guests. Ladies’ Day, in support of St Richard’s Hospice, is the highlight of the Worcester racing calendar. It is an unmissable event - so ladies make sure you have 9th June in your diary. The Worcester Wolves Basketball is gaining in popularity with people of all ages and the city’s uniquely successful professional basketball club, the Worcester Wolves, will go into 2012 joint-top of the British Basketball League. The

11

club currently play at the University of Worcester but are looking forward to moving into purpose built, state of the art 2000 seat Worcester Arena which will be opening its doors in spring 2012. Rowing on the River Severn at Worcester The beautiful River Severn flows right through the heart of Worcester and the riverside walks along its banks provide the perfect opportunity to watch the rowing. With a heritage of rowing in the city’s schools and the Worcester Rowing Club founded in 1874, rowing is still as important today. Zac Purchase MBE, the reigning Olympic and World Champion in the lightweight double scull, was educated at Worcester’s King’s School and is part of the current Olympic Squad. The city’s Rowing Club has members with serious aspirations to join the National Rowing Squad with Worcester now designated by the Sports Council as a Centre of Rowing Excellence, and of course one of the best stretches of rowing water in the country. The main Club events for 2012 include the Head of the River Races on 18th February, the Spring Regatta on 19th May and the Autumn Sprint Regatta on 8th September 2012. Worcester has it all! As well as these leading sports facilities Worcester is also home to football at St. George’s Lane, dragon boat racing and golf, with one club and a public facility on the west and the northern edges of the city as well as being within easy reach of a number of other clubs. The nationally known Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb and of course The Malvern Hills, Vale of Evesham and other great walking countryside are all right on the city’s green doorstep. To find out more about all the sporting opportunities as well as the Worcester’s extensive shopping, heritage and cultural offer log onto www.visitworcester.com, phone 01905 726311 or call into The Worcester Shop and Tourist Information Centre at the Guildhall, High Street.

Bursting

Come to Worcestershire in Spring-time and you will see the countryside bursting with life, with an abundance of flora blossoming across the countryside, as it is covered in a sea of bluebells and an array of yellow beauty from daffodils standing proud in the spring sunshine. Don’t miss the chance to take in the full glory of bluebell woodlands this spring – there is nothing else like them! As well as other woodlands throughout the county you can also visit nature reserves at Tiddesley, Chaddesley, Trench, Monk and Grafton Woods along with the Knapp & Papermill, Beaconwood & The Winsel. You can also join the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust on the Spring Open Day at the Knapp and Papermill (Nr. Alfrick) on Sunday 15th April or Tiddesley Wood Open Day (Nr. Pershore) on Sunday 6th May for guided walks, activities and more. The sight and scent of these bluebell rich woodlands is one of the most memorable experiences of spring. You may take them for granted but did you know that the UK has around half the world’s population of bluebells, giving us a duty to protect and appreciate these beautiful flowers? In the Vale of Evesham and the Teme Valley you can cast your eyes over orchard upon orchard of apple and pear tree blossom turning a magnitude of pinks throughout the season.

The Vale of Evesham and its surrounding villages are some of the most productive horticulture land in the country, famous for their plums, pears and apples. Between mid March and mid May come and experience the beauty of the Spring Blossom, when the road sides are ablaze with colour. The plum and apple blossom are the most common sight along the Blossom Trail. The white plum and damsons are the first to appear in this natural ‘work of art’, followed by the white pear and the pink apple. The plum is an important fruit to Worcestershire; they hold an annual Plum Festival in Pershore throughout August, to celebrate the proud commitment the town still has for its fruit growing heritage. The Blossom Trail allows visitors to witness the best of the blossom that the vale has to offer. The Blossom Trail has been carefully designed with blossom in mind; so this spring time follow those AA signs along the beautiful 45 mile route, and experience these breathtaking sights for yourself. You can also walk the Blossom Trail, following the production of a Blossom Trail walks pack. With 3 planned routes it caters to all capabilities; or cycle our Blossom Trail Bikeaway, taking place on Sunday 15th April in aid of St John Ambulance. There are four

12

exciting routes which cater for all ages - a fantastic family day out! Why not enjoy a ‘Spring-time on the Vale Coach Tour’ – taking place on Wednesday 11th, 18th & 25th April. A local blossom guide is available providing a historical and enjoyable trip or book a private tour guide to enhance your visit specialising in the Blossom Trail and the local area - they will definitely make your journey one to remember. There are many places across the county where spring can truly be appreciated by walking, cycling and horseriding through rural communities where lambs are leaping, calves are swaying and birds are calling. You will also see wildlife emerging from the winter’s frost foraging for food and of course the natural beauty across the landscape. Many country houses have acres of parkland to explore including Hanbury Hall (National Trust), Spetchley Park Gardens, Witley Court & Gardens and recently voted 2nd in the UK in National Trust walks is Croome Park, ‘Capability’ Brown’s first complete landscape design. You can also visit the first Royal Horticultural Society event of the year at the Spring Gardening Show at The Showground in Malvern as well as many other events happening throughout the county.

The sight and scent of these bluebell rich woodlands is one of the most memorable experiences of spring

The great outdoors

Welcome to the Malverns The Malverns are best described as an area running from Tenbury Wells in the North through Great Malvern to Upton in the South and taking in the Malvern Hills. This lovely piece of England borders the River Severn and Teme and lies between the famous Cathedral cities of Worcester, Hereford and Gloucester. The Malvern Hills are summed up perfectly in the words of ex prime minister Stanley Baldwin when he said they were: “The most beautiful silhouette in the world”. This essentially rural land is dominated by the truly majestic Malvern Hills. The highest point of the hills is the Worcestershire Beacon standing at almost 1,400ft, and on a clear day walkers along the ridge can enjoy views as far as Wales and the Cotswolds. If you want to relax and take in the breath-taking views, flowers and animals, then walks for all abilities are on offer across The Malverns. There are limitless opportunities to explore the nine mile length of the Malvern Hills ridge by foot, giving exceptional views across the Severn Valley to the East and rolling fields of Herefordshire to the West. Throughout the year, walkers on the hills are likely to see a variety of birds including Swallows, Swifts, kestrels and Buzzards. To the North of Malvern is the Teme Valley, which is an extraordinary stunning river valley packed with wildlife, heritage and history. This peaceful area is designated as an Area of Natural Outstanding Beauty which also extends across the Malvern Hills. The more serious walker can follow, the Worcestershire Way, a 31 mile walking trail that starts in the riverside town of Bewdley and finishes in Great Malvern. This walk will form part of this year’s annual Malvern Walking Festival which runs from 26th May to 5th June. There are plenty of less demanding treks, and all the walks are led by experienced walkers. More information can be found on the Malvern Hills Conservators website www.malvern-hills.co.uk

From high places throughout the Malverns, the same nine mile long chain of rolling hills can be seen, but the visitor will experience so much more than just the freedom of our wonderful hills. There are towns and villages to explore, whilst our world class festivals and wide choice of events will give you reasons to visit throughout the year.

A place of culture…in front of your eyes The Malverns are overflowing with arts and culture… with something for everyone! A hub for events, Malvern is home to The Malvern Showground as well as the Malvern Theatres, famous for its programme of top touring drama and musicals. The Theatres complex also includes a cinema and restaurant. The Malverns regularly plays host to a number of internationally renowned festivals throughout the year, bringing thousands of people into the area. Upton Upon Severn is home to the widely acclaimed international Upton Jazz Festival (22-24 June 2012) - on the guest list this year is The Big Chris Barber Band. Other festivals include folk, blues and world music. Another popular event is the Autumn in Malvern Festival which will this year celebrate its 23rd anniversary. This festival is now firmly established as one of the classical events in the regional calendar. Sir Edward Elgar, the famous English composer was born in Lower Broadheath and was inspired by the Malvern Hills to write many of his most famous works including the Enigma Variations, Caractacus and Pomp and Circumstance Marches. This year the English Symphony Orchestra will be hosting the Elgar Festival in Worcester between 31st May and 2nd June. The surrounding area provides a rich architectural history to suit all tastes. The Great Malvern Priory, originally built as a monastery has world famous

stained glass windows second only to York Minster. Witley Court is the spectacular ruin of what was once a glorious house, destroyed by a fire in 1938. Tenbury Wells offer you the chance to see the Chinese- Gothic Pump Rooms, which was once an attempt to develop Tenbury as a spa town. Take a stroll around the town following the Blue Plaque Trail Guide, then take some time to rest in the sensory garden. Upton upon Severn boasts a crossing point on the River Severn used by Oliver Cromwell’s Soldiers en-route to the Battle of Worcester. Today the town still plays host to regular river tours from Worcester and Tewkesbury. There is also an opportunity to delve into Upton’s history at the Heritage Centre located across the road from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street. Don’t forget to visit the famous Morgan Motor Visitor Centre where you can see some of the most iconic of cars. This is the last wholly owned British car manufacturer in the UK. Tours of the factory can be booked by telephoning 01684 584580.

A feast of local flavours… The Malverns has a great variety of restaurants, charming tearooms, breweries and vineyards. The pubs, restaurants, farm shops and delicatessens ooze with quality and variety. The area is home to some of the best organic food and drink in the UK. The Great Malvern Food Festival, now a fixed favourite in the town, and the Teme Valley Food Fair in Tenbury Wells showcase a variety of high quality food and drink from the surrounding area. Tenbury, still celebrates its association with the brewing industry through its annual applefest and Mistletoe Season. The Malverns have inspired and attracted some of the greatest artists, writers and adventurers of our time. Now it’s time to let them inspire you. The Malverns offer some of the most breathtaking countryside in the UK for you to enjoy all year round at whatever pace you choose to take. Find out more by visiting our website www.visitthemalverns.org or contact the Malvern Tourist Information Centre on 01684 892289.

Croome is voted as having the nation’s second favourite walk Worcestershire’s top heritage attraction has been named as having the nation’s second favourite walk in an online poll. Croome, south of Worcester, was among 8 places across the country in the vote as part of the National Trust’s Walking Festival. The Festival at Croome, and the walk to one of Croome’s follies which was entered into the competition, was supported by Worcestershire resident Toyah Willcox, the multi-talented singer, performer and writer. “We tend to forget the fabulous countryside we have all around us, and it’s there for us to discover,’ she said whilst on the beautiful walk to Park Seat.” “Croome Park is just absolutely stunning. It’s designed yet you think you’re in natural countryside. You look out across these gentle rolling hills and you see wonderful monuments, follies and statues and the lake in particular is really lovely. You truly feel you own the whole park while you walk around it.” The walk to the Park Seat, which overlooks the parkland towards Croome Court, is featured as a self guided walk at Croome and visitors can experience the scenic route when visiting the ‘Capability’ Brown parkland and house. Croome is open every day from 10am to 5.30pm from February 13 2012. Croome Court is open from 11am to 4.30pm and closed on Tuesdays. Severn Valley Railway First Ever Victorian Weekend The Severn Valley Railway are officially celebrating their 150th anniversary of opening the line. Today the line runs from Kidderminster to Bridgenorth with a brand new event on the 19th and 20th May which is the first ever SVR Victorian Weekend. With the help of “Queen Victoria” herself and appearances from some of the spectacular Victorian steam locomotives from the 1860’s and 1870’s period, not to mention an authentic variety of Victorian attractions - this event is one not to be missed and will surely succeed in it’s goal of helping to recreate the mood of the Severn Valley Railway just as it was when it first opened in 1862. This is event is great for all the family! Central to the recreation of a classic “Victorian train” of that period, the SVR will be “importing” the oldest working standard gauge steam locomotive in Britain. This locomotive is the former Furness Railway No.230 which was being built at the Manchester factory of Sharp Stewart & Co just a few months after the SVR first opened. www.svr.co.uk

Worcestershire is a fantastic summer destination with lavender, sunflowers and confetti field’s brightening up even the dullest of summer days and when the countryside is abound with laughter and the sound of children playing in the sunshine. Much of the area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and many rare species of flora and fauna can be found here including one of the highest butterfly and moth species counts in the entire UK. It is home to around 1,200 species. The trees are a great place to shelter from the sun and you can also visit parkland at Eastnor Castle, Hanbury Hall (National Trust) and Croome Park (National Trust).

FEELING THE FESTIVAL VIBE IN

Spring is a perfect time to visit North Worcestershire. The combination of stunning countryside and picture-postcard villages make it an ideal destination for a short break or relaxing getaway.

After the long winter months, there’s nothing more welcome than the first signs of spring. Whether it’s snowdrops peeping through the grass or lambs gambolling in the fields, the prospect of better weather and new beginnings gives us all something to look forward to. Spring is a perfect time to visit North Worcestershire. The combination of stunning countryside and picture-postcard villages make it an ideal destination for a short break or relaxing getaway. From canalside walks and strolls through the area’s historic forests and parks to exciting days out at major national attractions like the West Midland Safari Park and the Severn Valley Railway, North Worcestershire has something to suit all tastes and budgets. The area’s five principal towns - Bewdley, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Redditch and Stourpourt-on-Severn – are within easy reach of the M40, M5 and the M42 and all are well served in terms of public transport. There’s also a wealth of places to stay, so whether you’re looking for boutique accommodation, a family-friendly hotel or a quiet spot to pitch a tent or caravan, you’ll be sure to find the perfect bolthole. Spring is also the start of festival season in North Worcestershire and from the beginning of March until the end of the summer, the area is alive with various shows and events designed to appeal to adults and children alike. As well as free Sunday afternoon concerts during August at local parks in Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourport, music lovers can look forward to a Rock and Roll Festival on 3 June at Stourport Riverside Meadows, a beautiful spot by the river with plenty of open green space and a wide range of attractions including boats for hire, river cruises, fairground rides, a skate park, paddling pool and other family entertainment suitable for all ages. The Riverside Meadows are also home to Stourport’s Country & Western Weekend in August,

a two-day festival with music from five live bands, a variety of stalls, line dancing demonstrations and a fast draw shoot out. Another feast for the ears is the annual Blues Festival at the Jinney Ring Craft Centre in Hanbury. Featuring everything from boogie-woogie and acoustic sets to country blues and 70s funk, the event attracts nationally-acclaimed bands and jazz lovers from across the country. This year’s festival will be taking place on 4th August and visitors keen to experience the true festival vibe are being invited to camp in the craft centre’s grounds, which offer fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and Hanbury Church – a Mecca for enthusiasts of Radio 4’s long-running serial The Archers. Archers’ fans will also enjoy visiting nearby Hanbury Hall, or perhaps we should say Lower Loxley, which is within easy walking distance of the Jinney Ring. Owned by the National Trust, the 18th century hall is set within more than 400 acres of gardens and parkland and is well worth a visit. Sticking with the historical theme, the Harvington Festival, which runs from 6th – 8th July, offers an alternative twist on today’s plethora of rock and pop events. Held in the spectacular grounds of Harvington Hall, a moated medieval and Elizabethan manor-house south-east of Kidderminster, the three-day festival is a celebration of traditional music and Elizabethan dancing. Highlights include performances by Dame Emma Kirkby, one of the world’s most renowned early music specialists and Sovereign Brass – an award-winning Midlands brass brand which has performed at both the Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. And if that’s not enough to get your toes tapping, on 21st and 22nd July Harvington Hall will be hosting ‘Dancing with Darcy’. An unmissable event for Jane Austen lovers, visitors will be able to watch Regency-style dancing in the Hall’s grounds,

31

followed by a performance of arguably Ms Austen’s most famous work – Pride and Prejudice. If you fancy your history a little rougher, it’s worth paying a visit to Bodenham Arboretum, near Kidderminster, which is hosting a Viking Weekend on 21st – 22nd July. The Svartland Living History Society will be setting up camp in the Arboretum’s grounds - an area of outstanding natural beauty, containing mature woodland, 11 pools and four miles of footpaths – and visitors will be able to see how some of our scarier ancestors lived in times of peace and war at an authentic Viking encampment. Bodenham Arboretum is also an ideal destination for gardening enthusiasts and on 14th April, it will be holding the first of its annual one-day plant fairs. As well as lots of visiting plantsmen, there are plenty of nursery stalls to tempt green-fingered visitors and it’s a chance to see new varieties and gain some expert horticultural advice. For those that prefer eating fruit and veg to growing it, the two day food festival at Kidderminster’s recently refurbished Brockencote Hall on 23rd – 24th June is set to be a gastronomic delight. Real ale lovers will also enjoy the beer festivals on offer at Hanbury’s Jinney Ring Craft Centre (22nd – 24th June) and the historic market town of Bewdley (23rd – 26th August). Featuring numerous guest brews and a host of locally-produced perries and ciders, the events are perfect for anyone looking to tantalize their taste buds with something out of the ordinary. Other festivals and events around the area include Bewdley Spring Fayre (6th – 7th May), Bewdley Carnival (9th June), Kidderminster Carnival (16th June), Stourport Vintage Steam Rally (7th – 8th July), the Trimpley Heavy Horse Festival (29th July), a national regatta of top-class rowing on the River Severn at Stourport (11th - 12th August) and Stourport Carnival (1st September).

“Whether you’re looking for family fun, or a romantic break, the area is a cost-effective option for a stress free getaway. We’ve also got a fantastic selection of restaurants, hotels, guest houses, B&Bs and camping and caravanning sites, so finding a place to recharge your batteries couldn’t be easier.” Indeed, North Worcestershire boasts some real treasures when it comes to accommodation. Visitors looking for stylish, boutique accommodation will feel perfectly at home at Upton Warren’s Manor Hill House – a contemporary farmhouse with designer bedrooms and suites surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Additionally, the West Midland Safari Park runs late night tours throughout August whilst other attractions like the Severn Valley Railway, Bromsgrove’s Avoncroft Museum and Redditch’s Forge Mill Museum host regular events and themed weekends throughout the spring/summer season. “North Worcestershire has really embraced festival culture and the area is home to some great arts and leisure events,” said Amanda Sunter, chair of the North Worcestershire Tourism Association. “We’re also blessed with very active local communities, so during the spring and summer, you’ll find lots of fetes and fairs providing fun days out for the family.”

Alternatively, Brockencote Hall offers a more traditional rural retreat complete with fine dining, whilst Stourport Manor provides family-friendly four star accommodation. For those interested in self catering, Forest View Retreat’s luxury log cabins in the heart of the Wyre Forest are ideal for couples, whilst Lickhill Manor Caravan Park near Stourport offers touring and camping facilities by the banks of the River Severn. In fact, North Worcestershire is no stranger to watery accommodation and from spring onwards, narrow boat owners visiting the area will be able to benefit from the newly-built Droitwich Spa Marina.

Situated just 300 metres from the Worcester – Birmingham Canal, the Marina is just a 20-minute towpath walk from Droitwich Spa town centre and railway station and it’s perfect for anyone travelling the Mid-Worcestershire Ring, a recently restored waterway which boasts the accolade of being the only navigational ring in Europe that can be completed over a long weekend. Similarly, Stourport has plenty to attract water lovers. The programme of events at Stourport’s recently-restored, award-winning historic canal basins will be launched on 8th - 9th April (12 noon to 4pm) when there will be a British Waterways historic working canal boat on site and an Easter town trail. Other spring/summer events at Stourport canal basins include a Heritage Weekend (May) and a Pirates Weekend (June). Amanda Sunter concluded: “With so much to offer, you’d be mad as a March hare not to visit North Worcestershire and whatever the season, you certainly won’t be disappointed.” For more information on any of the events listed (including requirements for advance ticket booking), please visit the relevant tourist information centres, the websites of the individual destinations or www.visitnorthworcestershire.co.uk.

One such event is the Far Forest Countryside Show. Held every year in August at Callow Hill, near Kidderminster (this year’s event is on the 12th), the show features a local food marquee with demonstrations, craft and horticultural marquees, a classic car and bike display and main arena events and live music. There’s also a fair and side stalls, plus a variety of trade stands. Another option is Creatures Great & Small which runs from 9th – 13th April between 10.30am 4.00pm at Hartlebury Castle. As well as enjoying a host of different animal-themed craft activities, younger visitors can meet a variety of scaly, feathered and furry friends, including Easter chicks and lambs on bank holiday Monday. Later in the year (3rd – 7th June) Hartlebury Castle will also be hosting its Jubilee Jamboree which invites children to take part in various craft activities with a Royal theme, including making a crown and decorating a commemorative scroll. “Without doubt, there’s plenty to see and do in North Worcestershire regardless of your age or interests,” continued Amanda Sunter.

“Whether you’re looking for family fun, or a romantic break, the area is a cost-effective option for a stress free getaway. We’ve also got a fantastic selection of restaurants, hotels, guest houses, B&Bs and camping and caravanning sites.”

Arts Trail The Worcestershire Arts Trail returns to the county this June (1st – 4th), opening up over 50 artists studios for you to explore over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend. After securing Arts Council funding for the second year in a row this year’s Worcestershire Arts Trail is set to be even more far reaching than before, boasting a number of group exhibitions and the opportunity to visit the working studios of independent artists and craftspeople. A trip around the Arts Trail, which stretches right across Worcestershire, allows an unrivalled opportunity to glimpse the life of a working craftsperson, learn about their skills and see their work – both in progress and as finished pieces. You might even get inspired to have a go yourself, some studios will be offering taster sessions, or you could even book a class if you find something you really love! www.worcsartstrail.org

THE “ROYAL JUBILEE” ELGAR FESTIVAL In late spring, Worcester will be hosting a 3-day Festival in memory of its most famous son, Sir Edward Elgar. It is taking place as usual around the weekend of his birth (2nd June) but this year there will be an extra cause for celebration because the weekend will climax with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Fittingly, therefore, the Festival will open on Thursday 31st May 2012 with a talk at the Elgar Birthplace by Donald Hunt entitled “Regal Elgar”, exploring Elgar’s royal connections. This will be followed by a Jubilee concert at Worcester Cathedral that includes music written for the Queen’s coronation, Elgar’s super-patriotic Banner of St George and Elgar’s cello concerto, played by Peter Adams. Friday 1st June 2012 will open with a chamber concert in the splendour of Croome Court, followed by a performance of the Music for the Powick Asylum at the Number 8 Community Arts Centre in Pershore. The evening concert at Worcester Cathedral will feature English Music for string orchestra, including Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for Strings and Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis. On the anniversary of Elgar’s actual birthday on the Saturday there will be a talk about The Kingdom, which is being performed in Worcester Cathedral that evening. The talk takes place at the awardwinning Parish Hall of St George RC church, where Elgar was choir-master and organist. The Festival closes with the annual laying of the wreath under the Elgar memorial window. This Festival is very much a celebration of Elgar’s contribution to the cultural life of his own county and so most of the participants have very strong Worcestershire connections. The orchestra and all three choirs are Worcester-based and conductors Donald Hunt and Christopher Robinson both directed the Music at the Cathedral for many years www.eso.co.uk

Take the “Olimpick” challenge at Farncombe Estate! What’s all this about London 2012? In 1612, in the Cotswold village of Chipping Campden, Robert Dover launched the first ‘Olimpick Games’, reviving the spirit of Ancient Greece. This year marks the 400th anniversary of Robert Dover’s Olimpicks. Farncombe Estate, the leisure-learning centre near Broadway, is staging an event that brings both Olympic stories alive. From 30th May – 3rd June 2012, there are two Games-inspired courses: Competition and Conflict in the Cotswolds (4 nights) and The Olympic Games through the Ages (3 nights.)

The jewel in the crown is the Upton Blues Festival – now in its 12th year and a key part of the UK festival calendar. Taking over the fabulous riverside town of Upton-upon-Severn with over ninety performances on three main stages and nine pub venues, it is perhaps the only festival in the UK where every performance is free to watch – and therefore it attracts many thousands of people every year. The 2012 event (July 20-22) is planning to be the biggest and best yet with something for everyone across all the areas of blues. Some people focus on the two main outdoor stages where many of the UK’s top blues acts will be performing. Some spend the whole weekend in the acoustic tent, while others stroll around the town discovering musical gems around every corner. www.uptonbluesfestival.org.uk

Shake off the cobwebs at Worcester Music Festival 2012 Bored Brits looking to shake off the recession blues are invited to head on over to Worcester Music Festival 2012, which takes place this August Bank Holiday weekend (24-27). Broadway Arts Festival The biennial Broadway Arts Festival celebrates the Worcestershire village’s artistic heritage, particularly the work of the Broadway Colony, and this year’s event (9th June – 17th June 2012) focuses on the work of British artist and garden designer Alfred Parsons RA. The exhibition will be unveiled by Sir Roy Strong, who will also be speaking about his own creation, The Laskett Gardens. There is a comprehensive programme of lectures, tours, art demonstrations and music recitals taking place throughout the nine-day festival, including a talk by garden/landscape historian Marion Mako on Alfred Parsons, followed by a tour of two key gardens in the village (13th June – 14th June 2012). Many asparagus related events take place throughout the Vale between 23rd April and 21st June each year, offering the opportunity to taste, buy, cook and learn about one of the nations most sought after delicacies. St Georges Day sees the launch of the Asparagus Festival with the Great British Asparagus Run celebrating all things good and great about England. A special form of transport will be carrying a giant round of asparagus from The Fleece Inn, Bretforton to Stratford Upon Avon, the home of Shakespeare. Including cookery demonstrations, the King of Asparagus competition, entertainment and Jemima Packington the world famous Asparamancer – this really does promise to be a great family event. The World Famous Asparagus Auction in aid of the Bretforton Silver Band takes place on the 27th May, previously seen on BBCs Countryfile programme at The Fleece Inn. Famous for its connection with this vegetable this iconic National Trust hostelry will be filled with asparafun throughout the day. A weekend filled with laughter and free entertainment, is the National Morris weekend on 16th & 17th June, when around 400 dancers compete for the highly prized Evesham Stick. Numerous pubs and restaurants offer asparagus lunch and dinner menus, whilst many accommodation providers offer asparagus on their breakfast menus. If you want to try cooking it yourself, then visit a wealth of local farmshops where you can buy it almost straight from the fields. Some accommodation providers will be offering ‘Asparabreaks’ and these can be taken in conjunction with the Asparabus Tours, operated by Dudleys Coaches, taking place on the 9th, 16th and 23rd May. These unique tours come complete with an asparaguide providing a popular value for money day out - a truly unique “Asparagus experience”. If you fancy growing your own, many local garden centres sell asparagus crowns so you can take home a taste of the Vale and savour it for years to come. Local entrepreneurs have produced mouth watering “goodies” using local asparagus; including jams from Wayside Farm Shop and sausages from Abbey Butchers. More products are in the pipeline so watch out for them!

Pershore Abbey hosts the teddy bear parachute jump, and in Abbey Park is one of the largest gatherings of classic cars the region has seen, including Rolls Royce and oil engines. A wide variety of craft and Charity stalls selling plum products can be found in St. Andrews Gardens, Church Walk and Plum Alley. The award winning farmers market situated in Broad Street bursts with plum delights. The Plum Fun Zone on King Georges Field will host activities such as a climbing wall, canoeing on the river, archery, fair rides and river boat cruises - surely enough to keep the kids entertained, and arts crafts and music will be well catered for in the Plum Parade. With so many plummy
