HIDDEN GEM
with unique historical traditions
The Hadley Bowling Green Inn has been given a half million pound re-furbishment by Wadworth the brewers. Freshly decorated and sympathetically modernised, this famous Inn is now gleaming like a precious jewel hidden in the heart of rural Worcestershire. The pub was recently acquired by the Wadworth team who were attracted by the potential for this lovely old coaching Inn with its unique historical sporting connections. “I am so thrilled to be chosen to be the first Wadworth Landlord for this very special pub,” says Licensee Chris Masters. “It is in a beautiful setting surrounded by wonderful countryside and the renovation work has been sympathetically done to make the most of the pub’s character. It’s bowling history gives the pub a very individual character.” Chris has the full support of his dedicated staff who are delighted to be involved in the re-launch of the pub. Their
VW3.indd 2
enthusiasm is infectious, and they have had an extremely positive reaction from their first visitors. The Inn has nine stylish and comfortable en-suite rooms for people who wish to stay for a break. Visitors for the day can enjoy a pint of superbly cellared ale either outside in the extensive garden, or during cold months, in the cosy interior of the pub. The food is proving a particular draw with Chef Ron Rolinson serving up great quality British pub food every day of the week. The delicious Sunday lunch with all the trimmings is already becoming a local legend! Ron comes to the Hadley Green from another very popular Wadworth pub, the Colesbourne Inn in Gloucestershire. “We have so much to offer whether people are coming for a drink, for lunch or to stay the weekend,” says Chris. “There is a real buzz about the place and we are excited to see how things develop over the next few months.”
The story behind a unique pub The pub is 450 years old and for 400 years has been the home of the Hadley Green Bowling Club, an ancient institution of 24 members. The club members meet regularly to play bowls on the green and dine at the pub, and they maintain many historic customs. Behind the pub is The Hadley Bowling Green Gun Club which meets on the second Sunday of each month to shoot clays. The Inn provides the gun club with the special atmosphere of a 16th century Coaching Inn. Staff produce pre-shoot morning beverages to set members up for the mornings sport, and licensed bar and meals for those wishing to partake in aprêsshooting banter. As a gift and Thank you from Wadworthshire, we welcome you to visit our website and collect a £5.00 Voucher to use on your next visit www.thehadleybowlinggreen.com

Autumnal Display at Arley Arboretum
Whizz, Crash, Bang and ‘Woooooooo’!
Arley Arboretum is one of the oldest and most spectacular Arboretums in Britain which is now open to the public thanks to the trustees of the R.D. Turner Charitable Trust. Autumn is a wonderful time of year to visit the Arboretum when the leaves turn a kaleidoscope of colours and blanket the ground with a rich and exotic carpet; a great place to hear the seasonal rustle and crunch of leaves underfoot.
Visit Worcestershire during Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations and you can choose from a selection of spooky events including ghosts walks and family fun activities. Bonfire Night goes off with a bang at venues across the county with firework spectaculars galore lighting up the sky.
The Acers make a beautiful focal point in the Autumn display at Arley when the trees appear to be on fire with rich colours, punctuated by deep reds making a bold statement against the mellow seasonal background.

The Museum of Carpet Opens Its Doors For nearly 300 years, Kidderminster was a single industry town, with most people working or connected to carpets. This October, The Museum of Carpet opens its doors to welcome you and show how this town in middle England, far away from the traditional textile industry became renowned the world over for its quality carpets.
‘Land of Hope & Glory’ Worcestershire is the birthplace of England’s greatest composer Sir Edward Elgar and home to the Elgar Birthplace Museum in Lower Broadheath.
This new and exciting museum will be home to engaging displays, delicate designs, and stunning carpets along with demonstrations of the looms, handson activities and interactive computers.
You can enjoy a 35 mile drive around the AA signposted Elgar Route which stops off at various places of interest including the Museum, the Malvern Hills, Great Malvern Priory and St. Wulstans R.C Church which is where he is buried. On your journey through Worcester why not stop off for the Elgar Walking Route, a gentle stroll through the streets of the city stopping off at various places of interest including Worcester Cathedral and the Guildhall.

Lottery Money For The Park that Inspired Elgar
Once One Of England’s Great Country Houses
2012 marks the 75 years since the fire that raged through Witley Court in 1937. In its heyday Witley Court was a classic example of a Victorian country house and was once one of England’s great country houses. The owner, Sir Herbert Smith, decided not to rebuild after the fire but put the estate up for sale. Witley Court was never lived in again and was subsequently stripped and abandoned. Yet, as a ruin, it remains deeply evocative. Today visitors can explore the grand ruins, enjoy lakeside walks, visit Britain’s finest baroque church with Italianate ceilings by Antonio Bellucci, see the ornate formal East Parterre created by William Nesfield, a leading garden designer of his day and watch the Persus and Andromedia fountain fire 50ft into the air. Visitors can also enjoy organised Behind The Scenes Tours and a variety of other events. www.visitworcestershire.org/witleycourt
The historic Spetchley Park Gardens near Worcester which inspired Sir Edward Elgar to make some of his finest music has won £134,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The money will help towards carrying out essential conservation work to the garden lake as well as improving the experience for its visitors including schools, volunteers and horticultural and silvicultural training. Sir Edward Elgar once lived in the cottage within the grounds of Spetchley Park Gardens and regularly played there as well as being inspired to write The Dream of Gerontius. The gardens are an example of Victorian horticulture on a grand scale with a number of rare plants not found outside the major botanical gardens and the Parkland has remained unchanged since the 17th century. www.visitworcestershire.org/spetchleypark
Recognition of Enormous Contribution
In early 2011 the Morgan Motor Company in association with the Morgan Statue Foundation re-launched a campaign to fund a statue which it is planned to locate in front of the medieval Priory Gatehouse in the centre of Great Malvern. The statue will be a full size bronze Morgan 4/4 with Company founder H.F.S. Morgan standing alongside with his son Peter at the wheel.
tourism but also in giving jobs locally and to the network of suppliers in the Midlands who rely on Morgan business. Fundraising has now exceeded £129,000. However, we urgently need to raise the remainder by the middle of 2013 to ensure we beat the deadline when the refund of VAT ceases. We are appealing to the general public and Morgan enthusiasts worldwide to make a contribution to help us meet our target. If you would like to support this project then please send your contribution in favour of the ‘Morgan Statue Foundation’ to:
A statue in the centre of Malvern is truly deserved, receiving support from Malvern Hills District Council and English Heritage when planning permission was initially requested. It will be a reminder of the UK’s unique heritage in building sports cars and recognition of the enormous contribution Morgan has played for over 100 years, not only to Malvern

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Enjoy A Walk Through The History of Time The Teme in its short journey cuts through a most unusual and fascinating assemblage of geological features, providing exposures of at least eight periods. These stretch over 700 million years, from the time when the land mass lay far south of the equator, brought by continental drift to its current location.
In an audit of geological sites, around 40 were found in the parish of Martley and assessed. Some of these are accessible from rights of way, others only by arrangement. Not all of the 40 are worth seeing but our local trails and guided walks allow the visitor to explore the best and most representative of them. Please come and enjoy!
Martley was the first parish in Worcestershire and the 13th in Britain to achieve ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status. This organisation sets standards for the facilities walkers need to feel welcome in an area.

A magical Christmas in If you are looking for an amazing destination for your Christmas shopping and beyond, then look no further than Worcester.
10 VW3.indd 10
12/9/12 10:35:08
A beautiful historic city standing on the banks of the majestic River Severn, Worcester hosts one of the largest Christmas Markets in the United Kingdom. Its strong Victorian theme and variety of stalls makes it one of the most prestigious events in the country and with stalls snaking along the city’s medieval streets, around its Cathedral cloisters and through its modern High Street, you would be hard put to find a better location for a weekend away. Close your eyes and smell the hot chestnuts roasting and the pungent spices of hot mulled wine. See the lights twinkling through the Christmas tree branches and the golden manes of the carrousel horses whirling around to the evocative strains of organ music as Victorian ladies and gents set out their stalls with Christmas treats. Be entertained by a host of performers: carollers and character acts, jugglers, musicians and dancers, or relax and chat a while in one of the city’s many restaurants, cafes and wine bars.
From small beginnings in 1992, the Worcester market has grown to be the highlight of the Christmas calendar across the Midlands. And 2012 is set to be a truly memorable year, with more stalls than ever expected to help celebrate this very special, 20th anniversary year. There will be an amazing lantern procession winding through the city’s historic streets to mark the start of this event on Thursday 27th November, new specialist makers inside the Guildhall on Friday and Sunday and around 140 stalls selling a wide variety of delicious foods, beautiful crafts, many locally made, and those great gift ideas you are always looking for, but can’t always find. Explore the Greyfriars House (NT) by candlelight, or experience a Dickensian Christmas Carol at Tudor House Museum or listen to uplifting music at the beautiful St. Swithun’s Church.
Worcester is about more than just Christmas, and our range of sporting and heritage attractions and shops offering an excellent selection of High Street names as well as a unique array of individual boutiques, make it an ideal all-year destination. The Worcester Shop at the Tourist Information Centre offers specialist advice about the city as well as range of gifts reflecting the city’s rich heritage: its Cathedral and historic buildings, the piquant Worcestershire sauce and splendid porcelain, music by its most famous son, Sir Edward Elgar, and the pivotal role the city has played in English history, and so much more. Visit us at Christmas, but come back again in spring, and summer too, to sample the delights of a very English location. For more information and all the city’s events log onto www.visitworcester. com/christmas or call +44 (0)1905 726311.

Relax and Enjoy The Malvern is the newest, most modern spa hotel in the region with 32 beautiful en-suite rooms, including one luxurious suite, each designed with a contemporary Italian style for a boutique feel.
town. Whether you are escaping the stresses and strains of modern life, or simply want to treat yourself to a little indulgence, you will find your sanctuary at The Malvern.
Home to the first spa in Malvern since 1910, The Malvern has been designed with 'grownups' in mind. A true fusion of old and new, this contemporary retreat is as spectacular as its surroundings, bringing almost 100 years of spa heritage to life once more in this historic spa
The Malvern has extensive relaxation facilities including the cool, calm hydro-spa area; the spacious serenity of the Grand Salon and the total tranquillity of the post-treatment relaxation suite. The spacious Grand Salon is a luxurious Italian-styled area featuring Jerusalem stone

Painting Watercolours at Amazing View
Worcester Arts Workshop The Worcester Arts Workshop on Sansome Street is a welcoming and vibrant arts hub in the heart of the city centre, influenced by the people for the people. With the colourful Cafe Bliss at its core and in a new and innovative phase since January 2011, the workshop offers exhibitions, theatre, courses and workshops, activities for children and young people, film and music. The Workshop has many exciting and spooky events and activities during October and Halloween! Come and have a look.....
Painting with watercolours is both exciting and absorbing, with the element of surprise as to the effects that happen with some of the watercolours techniques. That’s probably why many people choose to paint with watercolours rather than oils or acrylics. If you’ve never painted before, or the last time was at school years ago and have probably forgotten most of what you were taught! You are in the same position as the vast majority of people who come and learn to paint with me.
The work of award-winning photographer Ben Osborne will be familiar if you enjoyed the David Attenborough BBC series, The Blue Planet. On 21st October as part of Shindig, ‘Jurassic Journey’ celebrates the people and wildlife of Dorset and East Devon seen through the eyes of four artists - Ben and his dramatic photography, a musician, a Sculptor and poet Matt Harvey. This is a real treasure of a show. 6pm. £10/£8 concs.
‘I can’t paint’ really means ‘I’ve never been shown how to paint'. If you want to learn how to paint watercolours then spend a day painting with me and you will be surprised at your abilities. We are also Amazing View Bed and Breakfast, so you can stay and make it a time to remember.

Newly Opened Self Catering Accommodation Holywell Suite opened its doors to visitors in June 2012 after a careful and extensive refurbishment of Wells House and is a spacious two bedroom apartment which beautifully combines the latest modern comforts whilst retaining the character of the historic building of Wells House with exposed original oak beams. Breath-taking far reaching views of the Worcestershire countryside can be enjoyed from all rooms and the famous Malvern Hills are right on your doorstep. Wells House has a history that can be traced back to the eighteenth century. It was originally designed as a small hotel built for visitors to Malvern for Dr John Wall’s ‘Water Cure’. Today you can still drink from the ancient well – the original source of Holywell Spring Water. Sir Edward Elgar taught music here at Wells House for many years when it became a boarding school around 1899. Elgar composed many of his greatest works in Malvern and the wide vista must have been a source of inspiration for him. www.visitworcestershire.org/holywellsuite

Tenbury Mistletoe Season
Come and walk in the footsteps of some of the greatest composers and writers of our time. Sir Edward Elgar, W.H. Auden, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkin all gained inspiration from walking on the Malvern Hills. The entire length of the Hills is open to the public and is criss - crossed with around a 100 miles of bridleways and footpaths all with spectacular views of the Severn Valley to the east or Herefordshire and the Welsh Borders to the west. Malvern is a perfect all year round short-stay destination but autumn is one of the most beautiful times to visit when the trees are full of their splendid red and gold leaves. Whether you’re walking on the hills, visiting the three towns of Malvern, Upton Upon Severn or Tenbury Wells, you’ll find two things in common – clean fresh air and a warm welcome. October is a key month in the cultural calendar of the area. The Autumn in Malvern Festival hosts a renowned series of artistic events held in the glorious surroundings of the Hills. A wide range of prestigious artists including musicians, poets, writers, film makers and speakers will perform innovative programmes throughout the month. The festival is classical music based with a prominent literary and visual arts element, so there’s something for everyone.
Julia Hwang
London Concertante Chamber Ensemble.
This year’s festival features World famous Russian pianist, Sofya Gulyak, winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, and Stephen Cleobury, Director of Music at King’s College Cambridge. Stephen will be giving an organ recital in Malvern Priory where he will be joined by Julia Hwang, the BBC’s Young Musician of the Year finalist. The principal concert is to be given by the London Concertante in the impressive Great Hall of Malvern College. There will also be poetry and drama plus several exhibitions including one featuring the work of Malvern pre war festival photographer Laura Knight. www.malvernfestival.co.uk Many other events are held in Great Malvern throughout the autumn and winter months. The main winter event is ‘Christmas in Malvern’ which takes place on Saturday 1st December when the town is transformed into a winter wonderland with festive decorations, music, a lantern parade and light show. Upton Upon Severn is a delightful market town that built its reputation as a riverside port. It’s Heritage Centre has interactive displays that explore Upton’s rich history and its place as a key centre in the outcome of the Civil War. The centre is only open on certain days during the winter so it’s best to check the website for opening times. www.upton.uk.net
Tenbury Wells has a long history associated with the brewing industry, especially in cider production, so it would come as no surprise that the towns two key events ‘Tenbury Applefest’ and Tenbury Mistletoe Season’ celebrate this tradition. The Applefest provides a platform for local fruit producers to show how important the apple is in providing great tasting juice and cider. Over 200 different varieties of fruit are displayed at this annual event and there are also many other stalls selling everything from contemporary crafts to gourmet food. With Tenbury being world famous for its mistletoe there is a whole season of events staged around the Mistletoe Auctions throughout November and December. Drama, storytelling and music are all used to great effect in telling the unique mistletoe story. With a truly unique landscape, the Malvern Hills is a real treasure in the heart of the English countryside and there are some fabulous places to stay including award winning family run B&B’s. Other options include booking a ‘theatre break’ inclusive of accommodation - visit www.malverntheatres.co.uk to check out their impressive programme of shows and films. For more information about any of these events please contact the Malvern Tourist Information Centre or visit the tourism website: www.visitthemalverns.org

SPORT
proud heritage and rich tradition
Established in 1878, West Bromwich Albion Football Club has a proud heritage and rich tradition as one of the 12 founder members of England’s Football League.
Historic triumphs over Chelsea, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Aston Villa helped earn the club a Premier League top-ten finish for the first time in its history.
Strong footballing principles remain at the core of the club and its progressive thinking has seen it thrive on and off the pitch on a global stage, while not forgetting its roots.
A number of events and player appearances in Worcestershire over the last year have highlighted a thirst from youngsters in the area to get involved with the Baggies.
The home of the ‘Baggies’ -The Hawthorns – has a 26,272 capacity and sits in a central location in the Midlands, within easy reach of Junction 1 of the M5, just 30 minutes from Worcester, and a stone’s throw from the nearby railway station.
And as the club seeks to grow, it has taken the bold decision to reduce matchday and season ticket prices to make football more affordable for families – and, in particular, the next generation of supporters. The aim is to make it as easy as possible for youngsters in Worcestershire to make West Bromwich Albion their club.
Like the club’s state-of-the-art training facilities, the stadium offers the ideal backdrop for Barclays Premier League football.
With the 2012/13 Barclays Premier League season nearly upon us, we hope to receive Worcestershire’s backing for the forthcoming campaign.
It remains a hive of activity all-year round as the club’s directors and staff ensure everything is in place to remain competitive year after year in the biggest league in the world.
Albion’s first five home fixtures see them take on Liverpool on Saturday, August 18, Everton on Saturday, September 1, Reading on Saturday, September, 22, QPR on Saturday, October 6, and Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday, October, 20.
With the unstinting backing of the supporters, West Bromwich Albion has recorded many unforgettable, even iconic, results throughout the 2011/12 campaign to secure an unprecedented third successive season in the Premier League.
Ticket prices for home games start from as little as £25 for adults and £10 for under-17s and can be purchased from the club’s official website – www.wba.co.uk.

GO NORTH,
Breathtaking scenery and a rich heritage make North Worcestershire an ideal destination for those looking to enjoy and explore the great outdoors this autumn and winter.
30 VW3.indd 30
12/9/12 10:38:37
With a wealth of natural features including river valleys, forests, hills and farmland as well as a fun and diverse range of leisure activities, the north of the county offers endless opportunities to satisfy outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. “North Worcestershire has often been referred to as the lungs of the West Midlands and it’s a wonderful place for people to get outdoors, let off steam and enjoy themselves regardless of the season,” said Amanda Sunter, chair of the North Worcestershire Tourism Association. “Whether you’re looking for a great-value family outing or a relaxing weekend away, the area has something for everyone.” Perfect for walkers, North Worcestershire offers a fantastic network of well-maintained footpaths which cater for everything from easy family strolls to lengthier treks. Spanning the whole area is the 37-mile North Worcestershire Path. Running from picturesque Bewdley to Majors Green near the edge of the Birmingham conurbation, the diverse route highlights the area’s rich agricultural heritage whilst also revealing its importance as a manufacturing centre.
Beginning in the Severn valley, the path passes through royal hunting grounds, sites of special scientific interest, reservoirs and dense woodland. Skirting the sandstone ridge of Kinver Edge, it then heads eastwards through the village of Hagley to the Clent Hills with panoramic views extending to the Cotswolds, Shropshire hills and Welsh Borders.
One of the oldest arboretums in Britain, Arley Arboretum is a short drive from Bewdley and can also be visited from the Severn Valley steam railway. This picturesque retreat contains 30 acres of grounds which include rare and ancient trees, walled gardens and a hornbeam maze and dinosaur trail for children.
Moving on through the Waseley Hills and Lickey Hills country parks towards its end, the path continues to offer magnificent views of the beautiful Worcestershire countryside to the south and the Black Country and Birmingham Plateau to the north.
The trees of north Worcestershire form a more high-octane attraction at the Go Ape adventure, situated 40 feet up in the heart of the Wyre Forest near Bewdley. Budding Tarzans – both young and old - can spend around three hours on an exhilarating course of rope ladders, tree-top high wires and zip slides.
Shorter way-marked paths start and finish at Redditch’s Arrow Valley Park, which features a 29acre fishing lake, and Sanders Park in Bromsgrove. The latter includes four Royal Hunter walks which take in medieval trails and glorious countryside. Local attractions Bodenham Arboretum and Arley Arboretum boast more spectacular scenery, particularly in autumn when the leaves put on a magnificent seasonal show. Bodenham, at Wolverley near Kidderminster, is an area of outstanding natural beauty and its 156 acres contain more than 3,000 species of trees and shrubs from around the world. To cater for the mass of autumn visitors, it’s open every day during October.
One of the largest remaining ancient woodlands in Britain, the 6,000-acre Wyre Forest is a haven for wildlife and home to many rare species of flora and fauna. These can be seen on three waymarked trails of between one and three miles in length, all of which begin and end at the visitor and discovery centre at Callow Hill, which also boasts a fantastic adventure playground Other attractions in the forest include a five-mile cycle trail as well as horse-riding and orienteering.

12/9/12 10:38:49
Autumn is a great time for spotting wildlife and North Worcestershire contains more than 20 nature reserves managed by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. Among them are the county’s premier bird-watching reserve at Upton Warren near Bromsgrove and the wetland of Wylde Moor, near Redditch - a haven for kingfishers in what was once part of the ancient Royal Forest of Feckenham. Awash with rivers, canals, reservoirs, lakes and pools, North Worcestershire also has plenty to tempt anglers of all abilities. The more advanced can head to the banks of the River Severn to pit their wits against the likes of barbel, carp and chub – and even visiting salmon - whilst easier conditions can be found on the inland waterways such as the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, which is teeming with roach and chub. If golf is more your thing, you can tee-off at more than 20 courses and driving ranges in the area. Blackwell Golf Club has played host to regional qualifying for the Open on numerous occasions and lays claim to a 200-yard bunker – the longest in golf!
Other courses include Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club, the West Midlands’ premier 27-hole facility and Wharton Park near Bewdley, set in 200 acres of serene woods and parkland. And when you’ve had your fill of the great outdoors, North Worcestershire offers a superb variety of places to eat, as well as excellent accommodation ranging from luxury country house hotels to pubs and farmhouse bed and breakfasts, many of which offer autumn and winter visitors the chance to relax by a roaring log fire. There’s even an opportunity to sample life as the Lord or Lady of the Manor with a stay at Hanbury Hall, a magnificent William and Mary-style house built in 1701 and now owned by the National Trust. The red-brick building contains two selfcatering apartments which sleep up to four adults and it’s an ideal spot for a festive getaway or a New Year party with a difference.
For camping with a difference, Wyre Forest Tipis also offers visitors the chance to experience an authentic native American Tipi complete with campfire and additional creature comforts including futons, chairs and a gas stove. Autumn and winter is a busy time for North Worcestershire so it’s worth checking what’s on in and around the area’s five main towns of Bewdley, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster, Redditch and Stourport. Highlights include the 25th Bewdley Festival running from October 5th to 14th, spooky Halloween gatherings and a host of festive events in the run up to Christmas – plus some great shopping. For further information please go to www.visitnorthworcestershire.com or contact the area’s Tourist Information Centres at Bewdley (Tel: 08457 607 7819) and Redditch (Tel: 01527 60806).
Hardier souls might prefer to check out the area’s extensive range of camping and caravanning sites, several of which serve the North Worcestershire Path.

when the blossom is at
For a few short weeks between mid March and mid May, when the blossom is at its’ best, the Vale plays host to a range of different activities for all those ‘budding’ horticulturalists! The Blossom Trail, currently in its’ 29th year, is a popular attraction for visitors and locals alike, and with such a variety of fruit trees growing in one area, it is one not to be missed. With a range of different ways to view the trail, it caters for all, from keen cyclists, to walking groups, as well as the less energetic visitors, with organised Coach Tours, along with their very own Blossom Tour Guide to keep you informed about the wonders of The Vale.
The specially designed cycle routes around the Blossom Trail, including the annual Blossom Trail Bikeaway, offer visitors a more up close and personal view of the Vale. With the wind in your hair, and the sweet smell of blossom, there’s no better place to be! If you fancy the Vale on foot, Blossom walk packs are available, guiding you round some of the prettiest sights the area has to offer. The pack contains 3 different routes. For the less adventurous, the 3mile stroll might be your cup of tea, or maybe you could tackle the 4.5 or even 6 mile route if you feel slightly more energetic. If
you wish to purchase a walking pack, please see the contact details below. The Spring Time in the Vale Coach Tours, as seen on BBC’s Country File, take place on selected days throughout April, when you will experience the blossom at its best. With a chance to discover some of the “hidden” beauties the area has to offer and plenty of things to see and do, we are sure you won’t leave disappointed!
