Chris Naylor became the managing director of Cheshire landmark Peckforton Castle in 2006. He and his team have transformed the venue into a luxury boutique hotel that offers exceptional service and facilities. In 2009, the Grade I listed site was crowned Small Hotel of the Year by Visit Chester and Cheshire, the 1851 Restaurant won two AA Rosettes and a Taste of Cheshire Award, plus the venue acquired a zoo licence for its family of exotic birds of prey. Today, Peckforton Castle is firmly positioned as a leading Cheshire venue for weddings, leisure breaks, corporate events, day trips and unique activities such as falconry and is open to non-residents.

Iain McAulay Iain McAulay has been a director of the Chamber for 15 years. Iain has had a successful career in regional newspaper publishing, then joined Associated Newspapers Ltd (publishers of the Daily Mail) in London where he was involved in the launch of the Metro free newspaper, management development and a variety of projects. He was the chairman of Pallet Force plc from 2005 to 2009 and is the Non Executive Chairman of Bedfords Limited, a company specialising in logistics for the publishing industry. Simon Edwards Simon is senior partner of Aaron & Partners; the region’s leading firm for business law, also providing wills, trusts and personal tax work. Based in Chester, he has been with the firm for 25 years dealing with corporate and commercial law, commercial disputes, notarial and insolvency work; during that period turnover has increased organically by a factor of 40. Chris Brown Visit Chester and Cheshire is the destination management organisation for Cheshire and Warrington. As one of five tourism boards in the North West, they are funded and supported by the North West Regional Development Agency, three local authorities and over 400 private sector tourism stakeholders in Cheshire. Grosvenor Estate The Grosvenor Estate represents the business interests of the Duke of Westminster and the Grosvenor family, whose involvement in Chester goes back many centuries and today the Estate is actively involved in the business community in Chester and across the North West region. The rural economy is also of vital importance to the area; the Eaton Estate employs 365 people directly, covers 11,500 acres and is home to 14 tenant farmers, 500 residential tenants and businesses ranging from furniture designers to IT companies, many of whom operate from modernised, environmentally sustainable farm buildings; a further 450 people are employed by these farms and companies. The Eaton Estate includes the beautiful villages and vibrant communities of Aldford, Eccleston and Saighton. Nigel Bruce Nigel has been a director on the Board of the Chamber for nearly 30 years and is a commercial property development consultant as well as having been involved in performing the renovation of rural barns for office use. He strongly feels there needs to be more emphasis on the requirements of rural communities and that local authority planning departments are in danger of turning all small towns and villages into dormitories by ignoring the demand for employment opportunities in rural areas. In addition he is involved with several medium and large redevelopment schemes in the region.

Global Leaders in Dye Solar Cell Technology

Our Vision

To be the leading supplier of 3rd generation solar technology.

Our Mission

Dyesol establishes partnerships with global market leaders where our integrated capabilities in DSCtechnology are incorporated into our partners’ core product lines, to produce a DSC product.

To lead the industrialisation and commercialisation of DSC technology by supplying highest quality and most affordable solutions.

Our Technology

Dyesol offers a holistic DSC solution comprising a wide range of products and services including:

DSC technology can best be described as ‘artificial photosynthesis’, using an electrolyte, a layer of titania (a pigment used in white paints and tooth paste) and ruthenium dye sandwiched between glass. Light striking the dye excites electrons which are absorbed by the titania to become an electric current many times stronger than that found in natural photosynthesis in plants.

• Materials • Equipment • Consulting • Research & Development • Contracting • Licensing • Training • Laboratory facilities • Prototyping and pilot equipment • Turnkey manufacturing facilities

Telephone 01745 535175

Dyesol’s technology is based on the DSC, a 3rd generation photovoltaic technology.

Compared to conventional silicon based photovoltaic technology, Dyesol’s technology has lower cost and embodied energy in manufacture, it produces electricity more efficiently even in low light conditions and can be directly incorporated into buildings by replacing conventional glass panels rather than taking up roof or extra land area. Advantages include not necessitating the use of high-priced raw materials, a manufacturing process that does not produce toxic emissions, and the potential for rapid efficiency enhancement. Dyesol enjoys a lead position in developing and commercialising DSC technology. In 2008 alone, Dyesol’s seminal achievements have included demonstrating more than 11% peak efficiency in converting sunlight to electricity; demonstrating multi-colored, robust, flexible cells for camouflage and security applications; and demonstration of the practical application of DSC on a coiled steel coating line.

CWAC is taking the lead to change the way public services are delivered nationally, having been chosen as one of four areas selected to deliver its ‘Responsive Pilot ‘initiative to roll out Community Budgets; this effects not just councils, but health, police and fire, indeed everything that is funded from the public purse.

A genuine ‘opportunity economy’ is the goal for the benefit of all communities, partners have already been working together to make a difference on this issue by: l Supporting local growth, two successful business improvement districts in Northwich and Winsford l Four area based regeneration programmes, with strong private sector representation, delivering successful projects l Freeing up of development land in Ellesmere Port, construction of Riversdale Bridge in Northwich, completion of a master plan for a central business district in Chester l A flagship Marks and Spencer store, creating 350 new jobs l 1,000 jobs are expected from developing the central business quarter in Chester l Rural economies will particularly benefit from superfast broadband with a recent announcement of £3.24m to provide 100,613 premises with coverage, supporting the creation of 5,500 jobs in Cheshire and Warrington, with £197m in growth to the local economy year on year. Steve Robinson, CWAC Chief Executive said: “To get this far is a huge vote of confidence by central government in us to deliver real change”.

Over the decades, the firm has continued to distinguish itself and has been involved in many famous cases, the most famous of these were the sinking of both the Titanic and the Lusitania.

MWL SYSTEMS

Open letter to all CEOs, MDs, FDs and board members responsible for compliance, business development, and continuity Next answer the following about service continuity and functionality. n Do any of your systems let you down repeatedly? n Have you ever had prolonged down time of either your network or Internet access? n Are you hampered by your applications not sharing information resulting in double keying? Finally take a look at the level and quality of support (internal and/or outsourced) that your business is receiving in addressing ICT issues under the following headings. n Availability n Responsiveness n Cost

We all know that businesses of any size depend heavily on the effective use of ICT in order to compete in these challenging times. However too often we can easily become slaves to our systems rather than their masters. This usually comes about by not continually reviewing the available technical solutions against current and future business needs. What was a reasonable fit five years ago using the technology available then, almost certainly provides less than optimal functionality today, especially when the demands of the business have increased. It’s all too easy to treat ICT as a necessary evil only to be considered (or blamed) when things go wrong. In reality I believe that it is the responsibility of directors to ensure that sufficient resources, both in time spent analysing and planning and also in financial investment are allocated in order to gain the best advantage that ICT has to offer. If you agree even partly with what I’ve said above then what are the next steps for you to take? Perform an initial review of how ICT is performing in your business. Try to answer the following questions. What software applications are being used in your organisation under these categories? n Line of business including order processing and/or manufacturing n Financial accounting n CRM n Back office productivity e.g. Microsoft Office n Communications including email, messaging, fax and telephony n Data protection and security including anti malware and firewall In all cases record the version, how many users there are and whether they are all fully licensed. Are any of these applications accessed remotely?

Does your support organisation help or hinder your growth? What did you discover? Are there any gaps, restrictions or pressure points which are not being properly addressed? If so, or even if you’re not sure, then please pick up the phone or drop me an email and I’ll get back to you promptly and we’ll discuss how we at MWL might be able to help. Because that is what we do, and have done for countless businesses over the past 27 years. I look forward to hearing from you. By the way we have an offer on at present whereby you can receive up to six months free professional support. How’s that for “Try before you Buy”?

Then look at the infrastructure and platform on which your applications are running, server by server and answer these questions. n Which operating systems are employed and are they patched up to

date?

n What services are running, including mail, databases etc. n How is your system backed up, has a test restore been carried out

lately?

n How old are your servers, are they still under manufacturer’s warranty?

SPECIAL FEATURE

traini GETTING THE

There is an often-voiced concern that in difficult economic times, too many companies regard training as a luxury, not a necessity, that they see it as a waste of money at a time when budgets are tight. However, the opposite is true because well trained employees are invaluable to the success of a business, particularly when trading conditions are tough. That’s certainly the message from those companies that deliver training. Why? Because in today’s business landscape, training can be the difference between a company surviving and a business that takes advantage of the opportunities as they open up. Reasons to invest include: l Improved recruiting. A reputation for training staff is likely to attract a

better calibre of applicant. l Holding onto staff. When people know that a company believes in their

personal development, they are more likely to stay with that company for a longer period of time. Some managers complain that they train staff who then leave. Well, it does happen but you lessen the chances if staff see their chances for advancement with their current employer. l Improved output. A well trained team that wants to stay with the

company produces stability and results in a more productive, enthusiastic and motivated workforce.

Training specialists recommend that a company should: l Start at the top. All layers of the company must be committed to

developing a learning atmosphere. l Ensure training fits in with the company’s aims. Training should help

employees develop skills such as effective communication, dispute resolution, quality management and team building, thereby supporting the company’s strategy for growth. l Find out what is needed. Designing a training strategy should begin

with an accurate assessment of what you do well and what needs improvement. Ask tough questions: what is holding your team back? What skills do your people lack? What do they need to do the job better? l Get the delivery right. There are many ways to deliver training –

classroom, mentoring, computer-assisted and web-enabled. Choose the most effective delivery method for your team given your objectives. l Follow up. After the completion of the training, you must provide an

opportunity to apply the skills. People should not successfully learn the skills without being given the chance to use them on the job. Most companies realise that they need help in putting their ideas into practice, and that means bringing in specialist training businesses to guide them. And it’s not just about existing staff. For a growing number of employers, apprenticeships can be one way forward and training companies can advise on how to engage with that process as well. The Government has already said it wants to work with business to deliver 100,000 more apprentices by 2014, arguing that the scheme gives companies the opportunity to shape their workers of the future. By recruiting the best young people around, a company can plan for the future.

IDEAS SHOWING FAITH IN BRIGHT

These are challenging times for a company trying to obtain finance for expansion. Yes, the financiers are open for business but it can still be tough to persuade them to lend. Lending money has become a scary business for everyone involved. They will, however, still lend money for the right company with the right idea. The problem is that there are numerous businesses desperate to develop their projects but unable to lay their hands on the necessary finance. The successful ones will be the ones that prepare properly. That is why good financial advice is crucial and the best advisers are the ones who pride themselves on working with their clients in a way which explains the complexities in simple ways and presents it in a compelling way. Having brought in a specialist company to help, the process suddenly seems easier. The advisor will start by finding out what a business needs. Key to the relationship between the specialist and the company is a good understanding of the projected goals. That means an initial meeting when the adviser, be it a specialist financial services company or based within a bank, sits down with the client and draws up a detailed plan, based not just on current needs but also looking to the future. The good advisers are flexible: they know that, as businesses meet changing situations, their clients’ needs and priorities will change. That means a financial plan that can be adapted when necessary, to cope with good and bad times.

36

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Business Directory 2012

Once that initial plan has been drawn up, the process moves onto the next stage, obtaining the finance to make things happen. One way of obtaining finance is going to the banks, who are still lending to companies with good ideas although maybe not to the extent of preCrash days. The sector says the money is still there but largely for those companies who put together a well-prepared plan explaining how it will be fully used to develop businesses. Another route for businesses requiring injections of funds is approaching venture capitalists. Even in difficult economic times, such an approach should not be dismissed out of hand because a bright idea remains a bright idea and can attract funding to turn it into reality. A venture capitalist needs to see a return on investment, yes, but also needs the idea to flourish to achieve that success. Done properly, it can be a winwin situation. Tough economic times brings these kind of issues into sharp relief for companies seeking finance. Do they batten down the hatches, tighten up spending and lay off staff or do they show a bit of imagination, take a leap of faith and go for it? There are those who argue that difficult economic times are the most important time to invest in new ideas because innovation is a key way of bringing the country out of recession.

RUNNIN TAKING THE WORRY OUT OF

A BUSINESS

It is a simple truth that many businesses would not be able to operate without logistics companies. Trying to run a manufacturing firm is a massive undertaking. Managers have to worry about designing and making the products, testing them before they leave the plant and ensuring that the packaging is right.

A good way with customers - logistics can be fraught, and delays caused by everything from road accidents to bad weather can cause all sorts of anxiety for clients. However a good logistics company makes sure its staff handle everything calmly and courteously to put the customer’s mind at rest. And that they are adept at finding solutions when things are going wrong!

This is particularly true as more and more companies trade abroad, seeking out new and emerging markets to compensate for the declines in their traditional ones.

Accountability - Freight is not an exact science, so many things can come into play once a load is on its way, and a good logistics company will make sure that they keep the client informed of progress.

That means shipping products, something which some companies may not have experienced on an international scale before, particularly at a time when Europe may look less attractive due to trading conditions but the likes of China, Brazil and Mexico might offer previously non-existent opportunities.

Technology - A good logistics company will make use of the best in new technology, including online tracking systems which allow them to know exactly where a product is at any given time.

The smart companies explore the opportunities and realise that transport is best left to someone else. Because dealing with the logistics of business is very time consuming and takes effort and expertise, logistics companies are seen as an ideal solution. To ease the worry, many businesses outsource the delivery of their products to specialists, allowing them to focus on running and growing their businesses. That makes good business sense as these specialists understand the world of ferries and airports, Eurotunnel and foreign motorways. As a result, the number of logistics firms have grown dramatically over recent years. So what are you looking for in a logistics company? Well, a company with all of the below is well worth hiring,

42

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Business Directory 2012

Available - successful logistics companies make sure that, even if their teams are out on the road, the client can get hold of someone to find out the latest about their product’s progress. In addition to the firms that carry the large loads, there are also specialist delivery firms handling the likes of important letters and parcels. That has become a growth area as the postal service sees itself opened up to fierce competition. And with Internet shopping growing rapidly in popularity, the presence of efficient companies that can span the world will become ever more important. Underpinning it all is the realisation that peace of mind counts for a lot in an ever-more competitive market place.

world VIGILANCE THE KEY IN THE

HEALTH AND SAFETY For those working in the health and safety industry, tackling complacency in the workplace is one of the big challenges. Talk to specialist advisers on health and safety and they will tell you that vigilance is needed, that staff and contractors need constant reminders and regular training.

The effect of ignoring health and safety requirements in such areas can be long-lasting and devastating, not just for the person involved but for the employer, who may find themselves facing large compensation claims and having to deal with a damaged reputation.

In difficult economic times, there can be a temptation for employers to take their eye off the ball when it comes to safety, feeling that they have always been safe and that they always will be.

Taken to the final extent, there may even be a prosecution with the company taken to court and hit with a hefty fine. And all because an easily-avoided problem was ignored.

However, there are regular reminders that such an approach risks disaster and each one has a human cost.

However, legislation is only half the story because good health and safety is also important in human and business terms.

That is why good health and safety practice at work is crucial to any business, however large or small. There are plenty of reasons why it matters, a major one of which is the need to meet legislative demands.

According to the European Agency for Health and Safety at Work, good practice is also a way of ensuring that enterprises are successful and sustainable, and that economies thrive in the long term.

Recent years have seen health and safety legislation having a greater impact than ever before on daily business life, and the laws are not just relevant to the likes of factories and chemical plants but also to smaller businesses and places, ranging from schools to community-run leisure centres.

It says good practice includes:

There are several reasons why this has been happening but all are driven by the growing awareness of the need to preserve the safety of employees, contractors and visitors on sites. Barely a week goes by without a story in the national, local or specialist press about the consequences of a company or organisation failing in their heath and safety responsibilities. That is why more companies are increasingly turning to experts who can guide them through the myriad of measures that they need to take.

Such specialists are able to take businesses through the increasingly complex health and safety legislation, ensuring that they meet the criteria relevant to their industries.

Get it wrong, and the opposite is true, says the Agency. For the individual, there are the costs of care and loss of earnings and for businesses, disruption, claims for damages, loss of goodwill and loss of confidence in management.

The considerations only increase when you move into the scientific sector where companies may be dealing with hazardous and volatile substances.

All of which adds up to a strong reason for get health and safety right from the start.

THE FI PIONEERING WORK IN

of GREEN TECHNOLOGIES They are the technologies that offer hope for the future of the planet and the UK is at the forefront of their development. Over recent years, the country has been developing an expertise in renewable technologies which promise to create energy without the pollutant side-effects associated with fossil fuel. Many of the workers who once worked in more traditional areas have turned their hand to new challenges. For instance, men and women skilled in the engineering industry have been able to turn those skills to solving the problems that accompany wind turbine technology and industrial chemists are coming up with new ways to reduce waste and generate ‘green’ power. Everywhere you look, pioneering research and development work is being carried out, including: Wind: The first renewable technology to really become in vogue, wind power is now moving onto the next stages in its development. Around the area can be found examples of companies pressing ahead with ever more efficient wind farms, using larger turbines and installing them in greater densities, often offshore. Solar: Generating power from the Sun is gathering pace as a popular renewable technology. It’s a genuine ‘sunrise industry’. Based on the idea that the power of the Sun can be captured and transformed into electricity, solar power can operate on a large scale with huge panels or on a very small scale with ones that can fit on a house roof and heat the domestic water supply.

The Hydrogen Economy: Work is under way to develop hydrogen as an energy source, taking advantage of the large amount of hydrogen already produced as part of chemical processes. The theory goes that, used properly, hydrogen can be a immensely useful power source which produces only water as a by-product. Much research is under way to not only work out the best methods of harnessing the hydrogen but also to store it in fuel cells. Biofuels: The race to invent vehicle fuels that do not produce pollutants is what has created the biofuels industry. Biofuel is made from the likes of vegetable oils and wheat and is low on pollutants, which is seen as crucial because car exhausts are a major source of greenhouse gases. Anaerobic digestion/biomass: Some companies are investigating ways of turning organic materials into energy. For instance, anaerobic digestion (AD), which uses bacteria to break down waste to produce ‘biogas’ ,which can be used to generate energy. Its advantage is that the use of bugs means it is a natural process which lends itself as easily to backyard concerns as it does to industrial-scale operators. In the UK, more and more AD plants are being created and the same is true for biomass, where power stations generate power by burning waste wood and the likes of specially grown willow trees. Waste minimisation: in addition to finding new ways of generating energy, many companies are experts in the reduction of waste and can advise on ways of making businesses more energy-efficient.

ATMOS CONSULTING

Ecological Issues Driving You Batty? With development there comes the need to consider ecology. As the legislative and planning requirements for protected species, e.g. bats or great crested newts, are complex and mistakes costly, the key to success is to take early advice from a competent ecologist who understands the commercial world. We provide just such a pragmatic service, and are proud that we often become a trusted advisor to our clients. One aspect of getting it ‘right first time’ is to ensure that the scope of work is robust, without incurring unnecessary costs. So, when the Bat Conservation Trust’s guidance on bat surveys was recently endorsed by Natural England and the Countryside Council for Wales, with increased surveys required, Atmos took action. We invested in state-of-the-art bat ‘static detectors’ to service our development projects. These can be left on site without surveyors being present, and they gather the greater volume of data required by the authorities in a cost-effective manner. As well as being well-equipped in terms of technology, our team of 25+ ecologists offer the full range of survey and technical skills, but (critically) their advice is focused on client’s aspirations for the use of land. A ‘right first time’ approach to mitigation and management can help realise those longer-term aspirations and avoid future problems. Examples of ‘added value’ service include alerting clients to Japanese knotweed seen on site during a bat survey; or to the implications of a third party’s great crested newt mitigation on adjacent land (which may have long-term implications for you!).

Our specialist technical skills and expertise allow us to strike the fine balance between the interests of developers and those of wildlife to achieve pragmatic outcomes that benefit both. For a commitment-free consultation, contact us at ecology@atmosconsulting.com. We will be pleased to assist.

RIGHT GETTING ON THE

of the law

These have been tough times for the legal profession as the economy battles back from recession but one thing is certain, and that is that legal advice remains a crucial investment, hard time or not. Those people who have tried to save money by dispensing with the services of a solicitor have often found themselves deep in trouble because they ignored that basic mantra. And in the law, ignorance of ramifications tend not to be accepted as a good defence. The reason lawyers are so important lies in the complexity of law, a complexity that is constantly changing. Each year brings amendments, revisions and whole new areas of legislation so keeping on top of the changes is crucial for any company, whatever field they are involved in. It’s so easy to miss a change that can have a major impact on the way a business operates. Also, very few laws are simple so in an age where a compensation culture is increasingly prevalent, getting the right advice at the right time is important.

52

or a large compensation pay-out. Understanding the law in the first place can prevent such unpleasantness. There is also a myriad of law surrounding competition: when is an advert unfair, is a product over-hyped, are the statements made about it correct, is an unfair advantage being taken over a competitor? We have all seen the rulings against companies by the Advertising Standards Authority underlining the warning that anyone making claims about their product or company needs to take great care. Getting it wrong can lead not just to financial implications but damage to the image of a business. Another rapidly expanding field is environmental law. Gone are the days when reducing emissions was a good thing to do but one not generally enforced by legislation. Today, European and UK law demands that companies meet their environmental targets and lawyers can be invaluable in helping them understand the nuances of a form of legislation that is ever-changing.

Take export law as an example. The international trade in products is a complicated one for companies. Different regulations surround what can and cannot be exported or imported and the situation differs depending which country is involved. Often lawyers are needed to help businesses negotiate their way round the regulations and ensure that they do not break UK or foreign laws. Giving that advice is a highly specialised field.

Each and every one of these may require expert legal guidance and it is always worth seeking out those companies that specialise in the field in question. A general lawyer, for instance, may not know enough about patents law to give adequate advice - but is likely to know someone who does. These days, however, many law firms are appointing specialists to their staff so that they can deal with as wide a range of legal issues in-house.

Or take general business law; everything from health and safety rules to retail legislation can present challenges and a single mistake can lead to a potentially costly breach. The result could be a fine, a court appearance

Whatever your company’s area of expertise, the basic, overriding message is never to mess with the law. Ignoring the advice can be as costly as it comes. Investing now can save a lot of pain and cost later.

INDUS MAJOR ROLE FOR EVENTS

IN UK ECONOMIC GROWTH

If anyone ever doubted the importance of the events industry to the UK economy, then a recently released report underlined the point perfectly. The report, which was circulated amongst Members of Parliament, outlined ways in which the UK events industry can work together with national and local government to increase Britain’s competitiveness internationally, and provide a boost to the economy. Presented to the All Party Parliamentary Group for Events and other MPs, the report was compiled jointly by the Events Industry Forum and the Business Visits & Events Partnership. It highlighted opportunities for growth in the UK Events Industry, which it suggested can grow dramatically from its existing £36.1 billion, to £42.2 billion in 2015 and £48.4 billion in 2020, as well as helping the 25,000 companies that rely on it. The report also underlined the vital role events play in bringing together ‘global leaders and thinkers to discuss, debate, learn and share’. Those words ring true for the many business people for whom conferences and exhibitions are the places to create and cement those personal contacts upon which the economy relies, as well as to learn about new products and services. So what are you looking for if you are trying to organise an event? How do you make sure that it plays its part in economic growth? Well, one of the key factors is a good location, somewhere that is easy to reach and that looks attractive for delegates. When assessing the venue you are looking for a number of other important factors. Can the venue cope with the numbers expected to attend, has it got a good meeting room, will it provide equipment like

54

West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce Business Directory 2012

projectors and Internet access, are the staff friendly and flexible in helping you meet your needs? If the answers to those questions are yes then the event is likely to be a success. The good venues are the ones that can tailor themselves to providing the exact needs of the event organisers. One approach is to bring in a specialist company to do it. The staff at these companies will have encountered just about every problem presented by the process. The first consideration is the nature of your event. Do you need a large hall or will something a little more intimate work? Is it formal or informal? They are salient questions because atmosphere is important to the success of exhibitions and getting it right matters. Whatever the choice, it is vital that visitors can easily understand the layout and find their way around with the minimum of fuss. Large exhibitions can be bewildering events so adding to visitors’ problems with poor layout can only detract from the success of the event. In a world where business people feel more pressured than ever, wasting time getting lost at an exhibition is unlikely to foster much in the way of goodwill. Throughout the process, it is important to recognise the need of exhibitors and to make sure that they are well represented. They need to feel part of the occasion. Getting that right creates a sense of goodwill which helps an exhibition turn into a success. One of the other things that makes an exhibition successful is a sense that something is happening so it is useful to have staged areas for demonstrations and performances, or for companies to show their products at work. Such activities, with the interest they attract, makes an exhibition feel like it is alive. All good exhibitions have a touch of theatre about them. It’s what singles out the poor ones from the good ones.
