YCF WORKING FOR INDUSTRY
Seeking to create and build imaginative and effective partnerships, services and connections within and between the public and private sectors to support growth and sustainability of the manufacturing industry.

YCF delivers this though our key themes: Manufacturing Networks Regulatory Health, Safety and Environment YCF is about forging partnerships and delivering benefits that a single firm cannot achieve on its own. YCF is a membership organisation led by industry, for the benefit of industry.
7
YCF WORKING FOR INDUSTRY
YCF has emerged from the major changes which impacted centrally funded support for industry, through recent months the YCF team have engaged with many diverse industry sectors and education bodies to work up an agenda to facilitate improvements in a number of areas identified as industry priorities - such as skills shortages, reliability and maintenance, and continuous processing. I enjoy being part of a pro-active network, and I find the network useful to access knowledge and share best practice with local counterparts on subjects where internally we do not have resource or expertise.

The beauty of being a small manufacturer is that you can respond very quickly to changes and opportunities, the downside is you can feel isolated. YCF provides a number of forums to meet other companies, usually much larger. This helps us to realise the issues affecting our business are not unique in terms of recruitment, legislation and processing. Being a member of this network and attending the networking events has provided us with great opportunities. It has also helped us on a number of occasions through self help or through free consultancy from our fellow members.

Think Manufacturing? Think YCF YCF will be celebrating its 10th Birthday in 2014! It certainly seemed a long way off in 2011 when Yorkshire Forward, the RDA, disappeared and with it our funding! The ride since has not been easy, YCF have had to make changes, losing personnel which is never easy and of course modernising our name and branding. But our emphasis now is solely on our members wants and needs across the process manufacturing industries. YCF is a membership trade association for the Manufacturing Industry in the UK. We represent large and small manufacturers and their associated supply chain in multiple sectors.
As always please feel free to give us a call or pop into the offices for a chat about how membership of YCF can work for you.
16
We aim to encapsulate what the UK Manufacturing industry is about by being innovative, delivering high value and quality service and knowing and keeping our members informed about industry developments. Since 2004, we have assisted companies though regulatory ‘nightmares’, hosted over 60 free network meetings and provided 100’s of delegates with high quality events and training, many of whom return year after year. YCF has a growing membership with active companies not only in Yorkshire but Aberystwyth, Birmingham, Hertfordshire, Kent and Derbyshire.

Foreword
The Future ‘Yorkshire Centre of Excellence for Apprentices’ Over the past 2 years we have been working with our members to form a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for Apprentices in the Yorkshire Region. This is in response to a skills shortage identified by our members for the apprentices they employ. We have been instrumental in the planning and development of 3 new apprenticeship schemes; Process Operations, Maintenance Engineering and Electrical, Control and Instrumentation. The Process Operations apprenticeship was launched this September and the others are due to begin in September 2014. We are working to secure part funding for this from the government. Our vision for this ‘Centre of Excellence’ is to build a mini processing plant that is flexible and adaptable to mimic those used in the industry whether for
chocolate or agrochemicals. There will also be supporting laboratory facilities, teaching classrooms and changing facilities for the apprentices, in fact everything they will encounter when they enter a fully operational site, including Safe Systems of Work. If you would like to know more of our plans or if you are interested in becoming involved both from sending apprentices or being able to donate plant and equipment then drop us an email or give us a call. We are now moving in to the next stage of the project. We need ‘Letters of support’ from the industry including the indicative number of apprentices your business would put through these training schemes.

YCF WORKING FOR INDUSTRY
YCF Manufacturing including the chemical and process industry plays an important part in the modern British economy. The Leeds City Region is the largest in the UK home to 3 million people with 1.3 million in employment and 100,000 businesses and generates 4% of the UK’s economic output. It has the largest concentration of manufacturing businesses and is second after London for financial business services. Companies are facing considerable pressures such as taxation, regulatory constraints and skills shortages but industry is continuing to survive the economic downturn by an ever increasing use of innovation. The recent UK Government Report ‘The Future of Manufacturing: A NEW ERA OF OPPORTUNITY AND CHALLENGE FOR THE UK’, states that Manufacturing in 2050 will look very different from today. Successful firms will have to be capable of rapid adaptation to exploit new technologies and to meet the needs of their more demanding customers and global markets. Successful firms will also harness a wider skills base, with highly qualified leaders and managers whose expertise combines both commercial and technical acumen, typically in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. This skilled workforce will need to come from all levels and genders; this includes apprenticeship schemes an area that YCF
18
and its members are very active in at the moment. There is also the ‘old issue’ of the current image associated with manufacturing and industry. We should all be doing ‘our bit’ to work together to further promote and market the opportunities for careers in the manufacturing industries. Have you ever considered attending a careers event at your local school to represent our industry? So it is even more important that businesses continue to speak to one another across industry sectors to benefit from the vast manufacturing and specialist knowledge that each company holds. YCF are keen to ensure that we host networks that are informal yet subject specific to aid this transfer of information, without giving away your company’s secrets of course! This YCF Directory will give you a flavour of what we can do and how you can become involved in this valuable community that our members have created. Now, more than ever the industry needs your support, so by your company becoming a YCF member we can maintain the network and continue to grow and help the diverse manufacturing industry not only in Yorkshire but beyond. Syngenta has an important role to play in helping to feed a growing population
It is predicted that there will be 9 billion people on the planet by the year 2050. Farmland is limited. Where will the food come from to feed 9 billion people? Products made in Huddersfield help farmers grow more from their crops – more yield from each seed sown, more protection from pests and disease, and hardier crops in drier conditions. We’re doing our bit and in doing so, making an important contribution to the local economy by way of jobs, apprenticeships and trade. We’re proud to be doing our bit and working towards creating a sustainable future.

INDEPENDENT PROCESS SAFETY SERVICES Process safety deals with the hazards associated with the storage and processing of hazardous materials that, if inappropriately handled or processed, could cause interalia fires, explosions and/or toxic chemical release. Accidents or incidents of these types have the potential for multiple fatalities and injuries both on and off-site, accompanied by major environmental damage.
A company’s reputation and commercial viability can be threatened by the combined social and economic impacts of an accident. Prevention of incidents and mitigating the effects of accidents, can only be achieved if a company has an effective process safety management (PSM) system and the culture to support it. People at all levels, from the CEO to shopfloor workers, are essential components of any approach to process safety, and it is these human factors that have a strong influence on process safety management. The impact of people’s behaviour and communications – whether positive or negative – on the process safety management system is known as the process safety culture. In order to maintain a high standard of process safety management, it is vital that an organisation has a good process safety culture. Chilworth, based in the UK, is part of DEKRA, one of the largest specialised process safety organisations in the world, providing independent
consulting, training and testing and offering global expertise with a local presence in explosion and process safety. With an internationally recognised reputation in process safety, Chilworth has completed projects in a wide variety of countries around the world. Using highly qualified staff, we join with our business partners in the successful development and delivery of sustained improvement in process safety performance, emulating and leading best practice. As an expert process safety company, Chilworth provided one of only two technical process safety experts to the Baker Panel investigating the Texas City refinery blast. Chilworth, therefore, has both experience and expertise to provide effective process safety support through first hand knowledge of the technologies and processes involved. Working with a number of multi-site blue chip clients in a variety of processing industries, we operate in the petrochemical, chemical, pharmaceutical, food, drink,
paper and packaging, plastics and rubber, agrochemical and power generation sectors. With consultants operating from locations in Europe, Asia and North America, Chilworth is ideally placed to provide a harmonised global approach to process safety for our UK and multi-national customer base.

YCF WORKING FOR INDUSTRY
YCF is part of a new EU initiative to treat CO2 as a resource, not as a waste SCOT is the first ever European initiative in the field of CO2 recycling. October 2013 saw the EU kick off a new 3 year project called ‘SCOT’. This Seventh Framework Programme project is funded by the EU and is complementary to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). SCOT will focus on an emerging and insufficiently addressed area presenting strong research, market development and economic growth potential; the recycling of C02 through its transformation into valuable products via chemical or biological technologies. This SCOT project will focus on an emerging and insufficiently addressed area; the recycling of CO2 through its transformation into valuable products via chemical or biological technologies. CO2 will no longer be considered as a waste but as an efficient resource enabling industry to: l
Reduce dependency on fossil fuels and primary raw materials for the production of industrial and transportation fuels, basic chemicals and building materials
l
Increase the use of renewable energies from intermittent sources e.g. solar by providing a solution for electricity storage, via the conversion of CO2 into gaseous or liquid fuels.
The Yorkshire and Humber region is the UK’s principal industrial CO2 emitter, producing 60 million tons per annum.
34
There are no regional targets for emissions reduction, rather a nationally legally binding target of 34% of 1990 values for greenhouse gas emission by 2022 and 50% reduction by 2027 (UK Climate Change Act 2008) By 2020, 15% of the UK’s energy consumption should come from renewable, compared to the 3% in 2009. (UK National Renewable Energy Action Plan for the United Kingdom) YCF is part of the consortium which gathers four EU regions and ten partners which are strongly committed and already well advanced in this emerging area of CO2 recycling. The consortium is organised around 4 clusters consisting of business, academia and regional authorities, these are described as the ‘triple-helix’: l
GreenWin in Wallonia (Belgium), a competitiveness cluster whose Board is composed of businesses, research organisations and representatives from the regional government;
l
Axelera in Rhône-Alpes (France), who is also a competitiveness cluster whose Board is composed of businesses, research organisations and representatives from the regional government;
l
A triple-helix cluster in Yorkshire & Humber (United Kingdom), composed of four complementary entities:
Smart CO2 Transformation ‘SCOT’ • The University of Sheffield (representing the academic and research community), which also coordinates the CO2Chem Network (an international network of academic and industry experts in CO2 Recycling) • YCF (representing the regional industry) • Leeds Enterprise Partnership (a public body associating 11 local authorities with a mandate to collaborate with industry for the development of a sustainable economy in the region) • The Centre for Low Carbon Future (a non-profit organisation founded by the 4 leading universities of the region, and actively collaborating with industry). For the purpose of the SCOT project, the University of Sheffield will act as the regional coordinator of this triple-helix cluster. l
The Rotterdam Climate Initiative (RCI), a triple-helix cluster in the Greater Rotterdam Area, the Netherlands. RCI is a partnership between:
Deliverables Over the next 3 years this consortium will mobilize the industrial and research communities in their region to develop: A Joint Strategic Research Agenda at the European level, l A Joint Action Plan. The first step of the project will be to: l Obtain a clear view of the current state of the play in each of the participating regions (CO2 recycling actors, environmental and innovation support policies, etc.) l To identify common strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) for the development of CO2 recycling at regional and at EU levels. l To identify synergies between the consortium partners, and development opportunities. To do this YCF will need to interview key stakeholders who could discuss CO2 recycling in each of the regions. l
l
5 interviewees from the academic world
l
5 interviewees who could discuss about the existing policy and aspirations
• DCMR (the Environmental Protection Agency for Rijnmond, the Greater Rotterdam Area)
l
5 interviewees from the industry (including SMEs and bigger industries).
• the Port of Rotterdam
l
If not contained in the above lists: 3-4 interviewees who could give us a more global/EU perspective on CO2 recycling.
• Deltalinqs (the representative body for industry)
• the City of Rotterdam • the universities and research centres of the region
If you would like to be one of these interviewees please contact Jill or Lisa as soon as possible.

YCF WORKING FOR INDUSTRY
YCF Networks are the core of our business. Supported and led by our members, we facilitate networking, the sharing of best practice and challenges whilst keeping members informed of latest industry news, opportunities, new innovations and regulations.
Skills Over the past 2 years we have been working with our members to form a ‘Centre of Excellence’ for Apprentices in the Yorkshire Region. Our vision for this ‘Centre of Excellence’ is to build a mini processing plant that is flexible and adaptable to mimic those used in the industry whether for chocolate or agrochemicals. There will also be supporting laboratory facilities, teaching classrooms and changing facilities for the apprentices, in fact everything they will encounter when they enter a fully operational site, including Safe Systems of Work. To register your support please contact jill@ycf.org.uk
REACH/CLP The YCF Reach network has been running since 2008 and has assisted companies
36
to conform to the REACH regulations with regular meetings, presentations, workshops plus access to the relevant competent authorities. Subjects covered this year include, downstream user obligations, authorisation, DNElator, SDS and Exposure Scenarios. This year the group will focus on assisting downstream users though the authorisation process ready for the 2015 deadline.
Waste and Environment This network aims to help companies understand the options available to them in the management of their waste streams plus keep up to date with the Environment Agency and the ever increasing amount of legislation in this area. Subjects covered this year include zero waste to landfill, producer responsibility, packaging waste, waste management and waste as a resource.
Maintenance and Reliability A part of the Manufacturing Excellence Programme, this network aims to assist businesses in achieving cost effective plants though good maintenance practices. The group thrives on the sharing of best practice and ideas. The group holds its meetings at our
Networks manufacturing sites to take advantage of a plant tour.
Health and Beauty This industry specific network is held twice a year to provide effective networking for those in the pharmaceutical and personal sectors. We look to include presentations from research companies and those interested in collaboration plus of course regulation updates from the competent authority.
SafetyNet
Some typical comments from members who have attended our networks:
Excellenct discussions and facility tours interesting Very useful to meet a variety of engineers from different sectors
This group is mainly made up of Safety, HR and Occupational Health Professionals, who come together to look at all things safety related in the workplace. (Excluding Process Safety which is covered by the Chemical Industries Association through their Responsible Care Programme). The steadily growing popularity of Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps in the process industry, evident even more so in the chemical industry, has been welcome news for CRANE ChemPharma and Energy. As a leading provider of highly engineered products for fluid handling applications worldwide, CRANE’s DEPA brand of AODD pumps represents a benchmark of performance for pumps in many industries. DEPA pumps are designed to satisfy performance requirements in a wide range of demanding applications found in chemical, pharmaceutical, coatings, paint, sanitary, food and many other process industries. Available in cast metal, stainless steel, non-metallic, and PTFE construction materials, they provide reliable and efficient control for conveying liquid and shearsensitive materials. DEPA pumps can also handle viscous and abrasive media, and operate in other “aggressive” environments and extremely demanding applications. Based on a flexible and modular design, DEPA pumps are available in a broad range of sizes and specifications, limiting the need for extensive spare parts inventories due to interchangeability of components. With its ATEX certified for Zone 0 (Group II 1 G), CRANE’s AODD pumps product offering is exceptional globally in its ability to supply pumps for applications in potentially hazardous and explosive environments. CRANE pioneered its ‘nopped’ surface diaphragm, which utilises a uniform sequence of small mounds radiating in a band located medially within the
diaphragm, creating turbulent boundary layers which in turn results in advantageous flow conditions (similar to the effect of golf ball dimples) and consequently improving energy efficiency. The ‘nopped’ surface also makes the diaphragm much more flexible than standard rubber diaphragms. CRANE additionally designs and manufactures the ELRO range of peristaltic pumps for mobile and industrial applications, which are regarded as indispensable in the positive displacement pumps market, serving industries such as chemical, building, environmental and power. These pumps can transfer all kinds of abrasive, viscose and shear-sensitive media and are also suitable for potentially hazardous environments. When installed or portable units, ELRO pumps provide easy operation and servicing, with only one item to wear out. Both DEPA and ELRO pumps are distributed in the UK by Teesside-based Tomlinson Hall, the three times winner of the BPMA’s Distributor of the Year Award. Crane ChemPharma Flow Solutions, based in Düsseldorf, and a part of Crane Co., is a leading provider of highly engineered products for fluid handling applications worldwide.
