Affirmative Business Solutions (ABS) is a bookkeeping, tax preparation, and payroll processing company that opened in 2017 in Ashton John’s dining room. in Perkins, Oklahoma. Perkins has been a dream come true for Ashton to raise her family and grow her business. The Success of ABS has allowed Ashton to partner serving specialty coffees, quick favorite meals, and Blue Bell ice cream. Opening in July, Pistols has become a staple in Perkins for young and old alike.

Ashton learned early on that that she had a gift for numbers, working in a restaurant completing cost analysis in high school. Then working at a farm after of accounting that has led Ashton to become a QuickBooks Pro Advisor, along with multiple degrees from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. She has invested Vice-President on the Perkins Chamber of Commerce Board and serving as the Treasurer on the Partners in Education Board. Also, she supports the Perkins-Tryon Bandits Cheerleading Program. Ashton also enjoys volunteering with Lions Meadows of Hope in Perkins and Autism Oklahoma in Edmond.

Ashton says the best part of her business is being able to help dreams come true for others, creating businesses, or helping the average family with their to hold your hand through the whole tax process. “This time will be different!” Who hasn’t said that before? Sometimes, though, people use this phrase when what they really mean is: “this time, I hope, will be different.” Unfortunately, though, history tends to repeat itself more often than not, and that’s certainly true where the stock market is concerned. Especially in 2020, now more than ever we have seen unprecedented volatility brought on by a global pandemic. No one saw that one coming. Furthermore, the Stock Market reacted dramatically, leaving many Americans breathless as they watched their 401k accounts drop by a third (approx. 35%). Luckily, the market has recovered (mostly) from the volatility we experienced earlier this year, but it has left many feeling uneasy in a very fragile market.

Over the years, a lot of people have used “this time will be different” to try to rationalize why the long-term secular bear market cycles we’ve witnessed throughout history would suddenly disappear, and the market become immune to such trends. In the 1920s, for example, forecasters predicted that the advent of trucks would impact the economy in such a way that the bull market of the Roaring 20s would last forever. Then came the crash of ’29 and the onset of another 25-year zero-growth secular bear market. People said the same thing about airplanes in the 60s, and computers in the 90s, but all the optimistic declarations in the world couldn’t stop the long-term secular bear cycle that began in 1966, or the one that started in 2000. In both cases, history did repeat itself. What will “save” us this time?

What are the odds that this time will be different? Allow me to answer that for you: slim to none. Now here’s the good news: you can achieve reasonable growth and reliable income from your investments without the risk of participating in the stock market.

With Covid-19 numbers on the rise, this year's Thanksgiving will be like none before. In Oklahoma Thanksgiving is a time for family, to connect with those we don’t see every day. Most important for my family? It is about the food. Everyone has their favorite Thanksgiving foods, for my husband it is about the turkey and pie. For my sister it is about the green bean casserole, the kids are always about the rolls and desserts. After a long debate, my family agreed to a virtual Thanksgiving.

I think the most important step would be to pick a method for video chatting. There are a bunch of different services depending on your phone/tablet, internet provider. My family uses Facebook messenger just because everyone has Facebook, and it is pretty easy to use. But don’t forget about Skype, Zoom, Google Duo, Alexa Portal. There is something out there for every skill set. I would put the most tech savvy person in charge of this aspect of your Virtual Thanksgiving.

I have heard from my friends they are enjoying visiting their families, but you can only talk about so much before they are over it and ready to do something different. I thought I would share some activity ideas for hosting a virtual event. Like all good parties, having a plan for the day of what everyone wants to do together will make everything run smoother. Get with your family and make a schedule together, maybe not everyone will be able to be online all day. So, have a schedule and a plan that works for everyone. For example, plan 9am- 11am as Grandma’s cooking lesson.

Get in the kitchen together and have a cooking class. Watch grandma make her famous stuffing then someone else can teach the group to make another favorite. Being apart doesn’t have to mean you can’t still get that wonderful kitchen time together. So, gather around in your separate kitchens, teach and catch up with your family.

Games! Plan a few games to play together. Bingo, Pictionary, Virtual scavenger hunt. There are too many games that can be played virtually. I can’t even name them all. Watch the parade, football, or movies together. Anything that gets your family participating together and having fun together is the whole point of thanksgiving.

In a time where so many people, families are divided, Thanksgiving is a chance to reconnect. A chance to move forward in harmony and pie. Love your people.
